I cannot recommend the Zicasso travel partner enough! Our tour operator made the whole process easy and a once-in-a-lifetime experience affordable. Delhi, the airports, and Varanasi would have been challenging to navigate without the expert guides who made person-to-person handoffs from the minute we stepped off the plane. Our kids (older teens) were very jet lagged and not feeling well the first few days (the pollution is significant), so we needed some itinerary adjustments. These were quick and seamless, and our travel agent was even able to swap days/activities on the fly. Everyone was so accommodating; we really appreciated it. We always felt safe and enjoyed truly authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences, such as spiritual Varanasi’s Ganges River ceremonies and the ISKCON temple in Vrindavan.

Our Zicasso travel agent was fantastic. She was highly responsive to our needs and respected our wish for a certain kind of trip. Her team on the ground in India was exemplary and paired us up with exceptional guides. There wasn't a guide in India who had less than 20 years' experience. Our agent urged us to do a few things that weren't in the original plan and they turned out to be special. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

As first-time travelers to Southeast Asia, we wanted a travel company that would tailor a trip to our wishes, provide seamlessness as we moved among the countries, and be responsive to daily changes that might occur. Zicasso's travel operator was all that and more. From the extremely helpful pre-trip consult to the back and forth regarding various possibilities, the proactive recommendations based upon deep experience in the areas, the carefully selected guides and drivers, and handling little wrinkles as they occurred, our travel agent and his team were absolutely tops. We loved each stop and, as a result, have become promoters of visiting such a fascinating and welcoming part of our world.

We had a very interesting 18-day trip to Laos and Vietnam in February. We worked closely with our Zicasso tour operator to plan a customized trip that included a number of stops and different experiences. We started in Laos, with the monasteries, waterfall/hiking, cooking classes in Luang Prabang, and outdoor activities in beautiful Vang Vieng (hiking, caving, and kayaking). We spent the next 13 days in Vietnam – chaotic Hanoi; beautiful Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, with the fantastic limestone karsts; historic Hue, the Imperial City; picturesque Hoi An, with the serene and spectacular resort; ending up in Saigon for a day. We had three knowledgeable guides with different personalities and backgrounds – Laos, northern Vietnam, and central Vietnam. We had interesting and detailed discussions which enhanced our understanding of the history of the region, as well as the US impact on Laos and Vietnam. Although we liked our guides, we realized they were independent contractors and did not really have any input in our day-to-day itinerary (which did have changes from the original). Although most of the changes were fine, we would have liked better communication – letting us know about the changes and options. As a result, we spent more time managing each day's itinerary with our guides to ensure we liked the next day's itinerary. In summary, we truly liked and enjoyed our well-planned trip.

The travel company is an amazing company, and I will definitely contact them when I travel to India again! They personalized the itinerary based on my preferences and dates. Their attention to detail was executed very well, such as the cute coffee shop or the niche boutique recommendations. All the services provided were top-notch, and our drivers and guides in each city were phenomenal. Everyone was very professional, respectful, and experienced in their role. The staff was very responsive and caring, always there for us when needed.  I definitely recommend this travel company and wish you all the best travel experiences in India. Thank you to our travel specialist and the entire team at the travel company for making this trip very special!

Ajay's Travel Agency

When we first started planning our trip, we were unsure as to what to expect. We asked Zicasso for recommendations on a travel agent for Rajasthan, India. We were contacted by the trip planner of this travel company. After taking time to discuss what we might expect to see, our planner recommended an itinerary that would allow us to sample a cross-section of Rajasthan as well as learn some of the history and culture. He suggested that we visit during Diwali, a fantastic experience, and that the end of October and early November would be ideal weather-wise, which it was. Our itinerary included exploring New Delhi, seeing the Taj Mahal, visiting multiple cities, riding camels and elephants, staying in luxurious hotels, tents in Jaisalmer desert (we stayed in a Camp Relais & Chateaux, an indescribable, wow experience), and a repurposed feudal lord's home which offered character and flavor galore. We were accompanied by one guide, an exceptional, articulate young man, and mostly one driver, and this constancy made the trip much smoother. The trip planner tries to pair personalities, and he did a great job here, which clearly points out the personal attention we received. Our trip ended with dinner at the planner's home, with his wife and sister-in-law graciously cooking a wonderful Indian meal for us. It was a very special evening for which we are grateful. We strongly recommend the trip planner and this travel company. Start with their website and contact them for ideas if you are on your way to India.

Individual India holidays shaped around your passions

A country by name, but a continent in scale, India in one word is diversity. To guide you where to go when faced with such rich variety, our India specialists use the experience of their own travels to create your tailor-made holiday to India.

The north is banded by the snow-crowned peaks of the Himalaya. Moving south, you pass through Rajasthan, a microcosm of India with its forts, palaces and temples, as well as the Taj Mahal . Central India shelters leopards, elephants and the Bengal tiger. In India’s northeast corner, Calcutta still exudes its colonial heritage in a landscape of Bengali mansions and neo-Gothic architecture. West-coast Mumbai is an improbable proposition — a hub of manufacturing where you can wander among Art Deco architecture or through a teeming bazaar. Down in India’s south, cruising Kerala’s  backwaters on a converted rice barge is a suitably relaxed way to embrace this region’s laid-back approach to life.

Useful information for planning your holiday in India

The official language is Hindi which is spoken by about 30% of the population, but English is often used for official or commercial purposes. Additionally, there are more than 100 other regional languages and dialects, including Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, and Oriya, which are widely used in the north, and Tamil and Telugu, which are common in the south. Other regional languages are Marathi, Kannada, and Malayalam. The northern Muslim population largely speak Urdu.

India’s currency is the rupee (Rs). You can’t buy rupees outside of India — tell our representative at the airport and they’ll direct you to an ATM.

Tipping for good service is expected in India and your specialist will provide more details. In some homestays and hotels, particularly in Kerala, you’ll find a communal tip box, usually in reception. Please give your tip to your host to distribute fairly if a tip box isn’t provided.

Like its cultures and languages, India’s cuisines are highly regional and what you eat and drink will vary depending on where you visit. However, there are a few things you’ll find no matter where you go. For instance, thali are traditional meals made of different curries and dal with traditional accompaniments — all served in small bowls and arranged artistically on a large tray. The exact contents vary by region.

You’ll also find an abundance of street foods everywhere from big cities to rural roads with nothing else around, which you can explore on a guided tour. Another common sight — chaiwallahs selling spiced milk tea on seemingly every corner. For a more in-depth look at India’s long history with tea, consider a visit to one of the country’s many tea plantations .

For a more hands-on approach, we can arrange private cooking classes with families across the country, from Delhi  to Tellicherry .

For the latest travel advice for India, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office website .

What you experience in India depends on where you go in this vast and varied country, but the most popular sight is the Taj Mahal. Located in the Golden Triangle, Agra’s renowned mausoleum is an ethereal sight during a sunrise visit . Nearby, you can also track tigers in Ranthambhore National Park  or meet artisans in the markets of Jaipur . In the southwest, you might relax on a rice barge-turned-houseboat through the backwaters of Kerala .

Wherever you go, we can arrange cooking lessons to help you explore the many facets of India’s regional dishes, like Rajasthani cuisine in Jodhpur  or Mopillah cuisine  in Tamil Nadu. To get to know individual ingredients better, you might tour a tea plantation .

For your first visit to India, we suggest visiting Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. Known collectively as the Golden Triangle , these three ancient cities are treasure troves of Mughal culture, including forts, palaces, and bazaars. You can also include a visit to nearby Ranthambhore National Park , to look for elusive tigers. Your specialist will help you find the region’s many hidden corners to give you a different perspective on the area. For example, you might opt to stay in rural villages  instead of the big cities.

On a second visit, you might explore Tamil Nadu, where brightly painted temples stretch to the sky. Here, you can visit the 49 shines of Ranganathaswamy Temple in Trichy, take a cooking class in Pondicherry , and then end your trip  on the backwaters of Kerala. Or you could explore Bengal culture and cuisine, starting in Calcutta . From there, take a lazy cruise through Assam  on the mighty Brahmaputra, paired with a rhino safari in Kaziranga National Park .

Our specialists will build your trip to suit your personal tastes, but you can get inspired by browsing our example itineraries .

From sumptuous palaces to humble homestays, where you stay in India depends on where you’re visiting and your personal style. The big cities offer a wide array of options including thoroughly modern five-star hotels and boutique guesthouses in well-preserved Victorian-era buildings. Outside the cities, you might opt for a stilted bungalow on a tea plantation, a remote lodge, or a safari camp in the heart of the jungle.

If you’re visiting the Golden Triangle, you can also choose to stay in a converted fort , a regal palace , or a historic family mansion known as a haveli. And further south, in Kerala, you can dive deeply into rural life with a homestay , known as theravads, or a rice barge-cum-houseboat that glides along the sleepy backwaters. Your specialist will suggest the best stays for you, but you can get an idea of the options available on our accommodation page .

The best places to see tigers in India are the Kanha, Satpura, Pench, and Tadoba national parks. Scattered across the central states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh, they’re home to the country’s greatest concentration of Bengal tigers. You’re also likely to see India’s other wildlife , like sloth bears, leopards, deer, and elephants, who all roam freely through the protected jungles.

However, if you’re visiting Rajasthan and don’t want to venture so far afield, you can also include time in nearby Ranthambhore National Park .

You should bring clothing that covers your head, knees, and shoulders if you plan on visiting holy places in India.

A direct flight from London to Delhi takes about 8.5 hours, depending on airline.

The time zone in India is GMT +5:30.

The best way to get around in India is a combination of private driver and internal flights for longer trips. The traffic in India is dense and hectic, so we’ll arrange a private car and driver for all your trips while you’re in the country. Some of the drives might be long, but the car will be air conditioned, and your driver can suggest stops to break up the journeys.

On days when you don’t have any planned experiences, we suggest you call our partners to have a private car rather than take a taxi.

If you’re interested in taking one of India’s trains, we can arrange for your ticket. Our representative will meet you at your hotel and escort you to your seat inside the train, cutting through the complexities at the station. As you disembark, you’ll find another representative waiting on the platform.

Yes, if you hold a UK passport, you need a Tourist Visa to enter India. Additionally, your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival into India and have two completely blank pages.

Most UK passport holders can apply online between 120 and 4 days prior to your departure date. However, if your passport was issued by one of the Crown Dependencies (Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man), you might not be able to use the e-Visa system. Instead, you’ll have to book an appointment at the Indian High Commission. If you’re visiting West Bengal, Sikkim, or Assam, you might be required to submit a passport photo or photocopy of your passport at each hotel — we suggest you arrange these documents before you arrive. In Sikkim, please bring spare passport photos with you for your Sikkim permit, which you’ll obtain at the state border.

If you’re not a UK passport holder, you can check the visa requirements here .

Your doctor can provide you with vaccine advice for India, but you should also ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the suggested vaccinations on the Travel Health Pro website .

India Holidays

If you are planning a tailor-made holiday to India, you are in for an unforgettable adventure. This magnificent and mysterious land is full of colour and diversity, offering a wealth of experiences for every traveller. From spectacular temple complexes and grand mosques to historic churches and abandoned cities, India is a rich panorama of life untouched by the passing of time. With remote indigenous communities and princely forts and palaces, every corner of India offers a new and exciting discovery. Let us help you to create the perfect tailor-made holiday to India and explore this wonderful land in a way that suits your interests and style.

Northern India and Rajasthan are the setting for some of India’s grandest attractions – a region of imposing desert fortresses, floating palaces, iconic buildings, historic trains, pilgrimage cities, colourful textiles and traditional handicrafts. To the north of Delhi the terrain rises steadily. Here roads lead from the hill stations of Shimla and Manali towards the mighty Himalayas, passing the serene lakes of Kashmir and ending in the high mountains of Ladakh . Central India is rightly famed for its wildlife and its collection of national parks is arguably the best place to see the majestic tiger in the wild, however, this is also a region of ancient cave temples, Buddhist complexes and India’s commercial centre, Mumbai.

Southern India is divided by the Western Ghats – tropical Kerala with its palm-fringed beaches and lush tea plantations to the west and the monumental multi-coloured temples of Tamil Nadu. Both can also be combined in a comprehensive itinerary of the region. Eastern India and the remote North East remain India’s last frontier with the cultured city of Kolkata the starting point for exploration of the region. Explore Orissa’s temples and discover the state’s indigenous culture, cruise the Hugli and Brahmaputra rivers, search from rhino in Assam’s pristine national parks, learn about the proud indigenous heritage of Nagaland or travel through little-visited Arunachal Pradesh.

Your Holiday to India

Your Holiday in India

Whether visiting India for the first time or a returning traveller to the subcontinent, our bespoke luxury holidays to India allow you to explore every inch of the country. Pettitts Travel have been organising private tailor-made holidays to India since 1988 and we have a deep knowledge and love for the people and the country. Every itinerary is based around your specific requirements and is tailored to be unique to you thereby providing a completely personal service that seamlessly integrates one-off ideas, luxurious accommodation and unforgettable experiences. Hotels and transport, guides, sightseeing and entrance fees are all included unless otherwise stated. Although dependent on where you are travelling in India, in most cases you will have a private car and driver at your disposal throughout and local guides or naturalists where appropriate. International flights can also be included. There is a Pettitts Travel office in the Indian capital Delhi which, in addition to our UK operation, provides round the clock support and assistance.

Although all of our arrangements are tailor-made, many clients find inspiration from the itineraries on our website and then adapt them to fit their requirements at the planning stage – adding or removing days, including different cities and regions or making adjustments to the accommodation from the inclusion of a luxury palace to an authentic homestay. The Golden Triangle and Beyond is ideal for the first time visitor to India whilst Historic Rajasthan and Highlights of Gujarat explore the region in greater depth. Foothills of the Himalayas combines the Golden Temple of Amritsar with the hill station of Shimla and for the more adventurous Crossing the Zanskar follows the epic overland route to Ladakh. Classical India highlights the best of Central India’s historic sites and Land of the Tiger the region’s finest wildlife reserves. Spices and Sandalwood and Rural Images of Kerala offer two different routes through Kerala whilst Journey through Southern India combines the state with neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka’s Hidden Treasures includes Hampi. Classic routes in eastern India include Return to Darjeeling and Sikkim , Journey through Assam and Cruising the Upper Brahmaputra . For those looking to travel off the beaten track, Nagaland and the Hornbill Festival , Eastern India and the Tribes of Orissa and Kolkata and the Historic Trading Centres of East India offer something a little different.

Places to visit in India

A melting pot of language, culture and religion, India is a multifaceted country and almost impossible to define. Rajasthan, northern and western India are home to the country’s best known cities including capital Delhi, the pink city of Jaipur, home of the Taj Mahal, Agra and holy Varanasi – all of which offer a whole host of attractions. These regions are also famed for their handicrafts, artwork and textiles. Central India is the setting for the country’s finest national parks with Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench the best places to see tiger. The southern half of India is divided by the tea plantations and spice farms of the Western Ghats. To the east are the stupendous temple towns of Tamil Nadu and Islamic architecture of Hyderabad and to the west under explored Karnataka, location of deserted Hampi, and the tranquil backwaters and palm-fringed beaches of Kerala. Eastern India is defined by Kolkata and the Ganges River whilst the remote north east remains a frontier-land of rare indigenous culture and reserves renowned for both birdlife and one-horned rhinoceros.

When to Visit india

India is a year-round destination and our tours to India from the UK can be arranged throughout the year, however, when planning your holiday, generally the best time to visit the country is from late September to early April when temperatures are comfortable and the risk of rain low. Mid-April to June see a rise in temperature and, as foliage dies back, are the perfect time for viewing wildlife including tiger and leopard. The monsoon arrives by the end of June and lasts until early September. Showers tend to be short and heavy but the lower temperatures and fewer tourists make this a good time to travel. Conversely, the monsoon months are the best time to visit the northern Himalayan region of Ladakh.

Festivals In India

Festivals In India

Colourful and vibrant, the festivals of India are rightly famous. One of the joys of travelling in India is the discovery of a celebration – a village wedding perhaps, complete with fireworks and loud Bollywood music, or a religious observance in honour of a local deity. India’s vast size, its cultural heritage and strong regional identities all play their part in making these festivals what they are today. The majority of celebrations in India are centred on religion – three of the most famous which can be incorporated into a holiday are Holi, the ‘festival of colours’, held during March, Diwali the ‘festival of lights’ which takes places between October and November and signifies the triumph of good over evil, and Dussehra which is fervently celebrated in northern India . The most popular regional celebrations include December’s Hornbill Festival , an important cultural event that showcases Nagaland’s traditions and heritage, Gujarat’s fabulous International Kite Festival held annually in January and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Kerala where each August huge snake boats are raced in front of enormous crowds.

Wildlife In India

India is synonymous with wildlife . Known the world over as home to the majestic tiger, India is blessed with an extraordinary diversity of animal life and a plethora of national parks and protected areas. India’s vast size, its remoteness and an increasing focus on conservation has had a positive impact on wildlife numbers and the country is the home of a large number of rare or endangered species including tiger, leopard and Asiatic lion, one-horned rhinoceros and elephant. National parks and reserves are found throughout the country, from high mountain and desert to tropical jungle and forest and it is this range of habitats that supports such a wide variety of mammal, reptile, amphibious and bird life. Northern and central India and the reserves of Corbett , Ranthambore , Kanha , Pench and Bandhavgarh are famed the world over for their tiger populations. Gujarat’s Sasan Gir supports the rare Asiatic lion and Kaziranga, in North East India, the majestic one-horned rhinoceros. The North East national parks of Kaziranga, Dibru-Saikhowa and Nameri also offer fine birdwatching.

India Holiday Review

We truly had the holiday of a lifetime thanks to the exceptional guides and drivers we met along our trip in Northern India. The itinerary had the perfect balance of tours, travel days and rest days for us and was meticulously planned and executed. We'd love to use Pettitts Travel again in the future and will absolutely be returning to India.

Accommodation in India

There is a huge breadth of accommodation in India with styles varying across the country. India is famed for its heritage properties, the majority of which tend to be found in the north of India. These come in all shapes and sizes from beautifully restored buildings and luxury palaces operated by distinguished hotel groups to small privately owned forts and ancestral homes. Homestays are also very popular and found throughout the country. Whether a grand and luxurious family residence, heritage property or simple abode, they offer a high level of service and a unique glimpse into everyday Indian life. Please let us know if you would like to include a homestay into your itinerary. In more remote regions, hotels are likely to be clean and simple whilst wildlife accommodation is generally either in jungle lodges or comfortable tented camps. For those looking to relax there are many excellent beachside hotels and an increasing number of retreats specialising in both Ayurveda and yoga.

LUXURY HOLIDAYS & TOURS

Majestic heritage, & vibrant culture.

Words scarcely do justice to the diverse and endlessly surprising land that is India. From the cool, isolated splendour of the Himalaya to the architectural elegance of the Taj Mahal, India has natural beauty, rich culture and hidden treasures at every turn.

From emerald tea plantations to chaotic cities, exquisite food and exuberant festivals, India is one of the planet’s most rewarding destinations to explore. Start by tracing its history in the picturesque forts, palaces and temples of Rajasthan, a dream world fabled for its desert landscapes. From here it’s just a short hop to Agra, home of the iconic Taj Mahal and Agra Fort – enduring monuments of the mighty Mughal Empire.

You could wander the streets of Old Delhi, admire the architectural gems of Jaipur or revel in the beauty of Udaipur’s marble palace and lakeside gardens. Make time, too, for the Himalayan mountain kingdoms of Ladakh and Zanskar, the last remaining strongholds of Tibetan Buddhism and a trekker’s paradise. Time your trip with one of India’s many festivals to experience a vivid display of colours, music, costumes and tradition.

A world away from the bustle normally associated with the country, the south allures with its enviable tropical climate, timeless villages and laidback way of living. Here, Kerala’s intricate network of backwaters shows rural India at its most enchanting and unspoiled, and is best explored in a traditional slow-moving houseboat.

For some, the chance to view Bengal tigers in their natural habitat is reason enough to make the trip. Safaris in the great forest reserves of central India – Pench, Kanha and Bandhavgarh – offer elusive tiger sightings as well as encounters with patient Indian elephants, monkeys, water buffalo and birds.

Palm-fringed beaches equally await discovery on the coast, as do traditional tea plantations in the cool foothills of the Himalayas. Faced with such a richness of possibilities, the best place to start is with our India experts whose seasoned hands will help to guide you through the country’s complexities for a truly memorable holiday.

Meet our India travel specialists

Travel specialist taking call

Our India travel specialists are here to help and inspire you throughout the planning of your holiday. They know all the best tips about travelling in India. As they’ve experienced many of our trips, they can offer you genuine advice, drawing upon their own first-hand experience.

We pride ourselves on providing excellent service levels which continue throughout the life of your booking. While you’re away you’ll also have the 24-hour support of our local English speaking partners in India. Find out more about our India travel specialists below.

The greatest place on Earth for me is India. It all started from a young age with my first curry, I just had to go! One one-way ticket later: I arrived. After travelling roof class on top of a bus, being invited to a Hindu wedding and meeting a guru who knew everything about me, I was hooked. I was lucky enough to spend two and a half months in this incredible country, going from one magical place to the next.

On my travels I will always remember all the kind locals that looked out for me and offered me their tasty food. They are so helpful and the most fun people in the world. You can’t beat  having a cup of chai  with the local lads and you learn the poorest people are the most giving. India has it all and if you like a curry you’ve cracked it!

India is the most intoxicating country I have travelled in. In fact, I was meant to be there for 2 months but ended up staying for 8 because I was so blown away by it. Once it’s under your skin it’s hard to pull yourself away and you just want to keep exploring. Our customers certainly agree. Many of them end up coming back for second or third trips so they have the opportunity to experience more of its fascinating attractions. The possibilities are endless in India, with each region offering something unique.

I’m not sure if it’s the history, welcoming people, the diversity in cultures, or the food, but it is never hard to find a reason to go back.

Mystic India is a tireless  ambassador promoting this unbelievable region

“India’s most valuable treasure cannot be seen. It lies hidden in India’s silent spirituality, making her a Mystic Land of meditation, Contemplation and enlightenment”.

Mystic India doesn’t just feature the main tourist highlights, of course, these have to be mentioned, I can’t leave out the majestic Taj Mahal or the lake city of Udaipur or the backwaters of Kerala. But some of my tours delve further off the beaten trail, suggesting you stay in rural locations to meet the local communities because I know this is real India.  I include tours to the far less visited locations like Nagaland in far North East India, part of the ‘seven sisters’ states.

I work with all my clients on an individual basis to design a tour that will make their trip one of the most memorable.

Mystic India’s aim has always been to help people discover what an incredible region this is. My passion is assisting people in taking their first steps towards a lifetime of travel and for the returning  traveller, new experiences.

“I want you to fall in love with India”

Sharon Evans ‘passionate owner of Mystic India Ltd. ‘Indian Tours, India Travel Specialist

“To know the road ahead is to ask someone coming back”

Customer Speak

The family tour to Bali was a WOW experience from start to finish. The tour guide met us at the airport, and he was there with us from start to finish. The tour itinerary was well-planned - without overloading our vacation, nor keeping us bored with day off. The days were planned in such a way that we had lunch and dinner at Indian restaurants at meal times and sightseeing was wholesome. I would like to thank TravelXS for going the extra mile to make our holiday memorable.

Travelling with Travel XS was a pleasant experience for us. The entire program went as per plan – the visits were well organized allowing us to spend ample time at every place we visited. The people who took us around were pleasant, well-mannered and brought vehicles that were in very good condition. Pickups were always on time and we never had to wait anywhere. Thank you to the Travel XS Team for the excellent arrangements!

Our last-minute trip to Italy was planned in record time by Travel XS! Having worked with them before, their travel experts are already aware of our requirements, and always customize our trips accordingly - especially keeping my grandfather in mind.
