Designed by Sir Arthur Bloomfield, as a residence for the Maharaja of Jaipur, this butterfly-shaped building with a central dome certainly had some potential to later become one of the most important buildings for modern art in India. It was styled after a concept of the Central Hexagon visualized by Sir Lutyens and Herbert Baker. The two conceptualized and gave the building a distinctive character. National Gallery of Modern Art is probably one of those places in Delhi that every art lover knows. NGMA is the premier institution of its kind in India. Run by Ministry of Culture, the gallery is a repository of the cultural ethos of India that displays the changing art forms through the passage of the last hundred and fifty years in the field of Visual and Plastic arts. The NGMA collection today is inarguably the most significant collection of modern and contemporary art not only in Delhi but in the country as well.

The 9 best museums in Delhi-NCR

best museums in Delhi

Delhi takes its role as the nation’s cultural epicentre very seriously – a fact that’s most evident in its number of beautiful museums. You’ll find grand repositories of ancient Indian artefacts and contemporary Indian art, memorials to larger-than-life personalities and chronicles of the traumatic events that shaped history. With over 30 museums dedicated to art, craft and specialised interests, there’s something on offer for people of all ages and backgrounds. Through thoughtfully curated collections and interactive exhibits, each museum focuses on an interesting subject, and many are housed in iconic buildings. If you feel daunted by this large number, we are here to save you time and effort. Here’s a round-up of the best museums in Delhi, so you can enjoy your cultural sojourn in the capital with ease. The 9 best museums in Delhi:

National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA)

The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) is housed in the beautiful 1930s building known as Jaipur House in the leafy India Gate C-hexagon. This is the best place to appreciate up close works by contemporary and modern artists such as Raja Ravi Verma, the Tagore brothers, Amrita Sher-Gill, and post-independence bigwigs like MF Husain and FN Souza, among numerous others. Temporary exhibitions including international ones dedicated to legendary Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa and more, are frequently organised. With the recent opening of three new restaurants in the gallery premises, the space has also become a popular cultural hub. National Museum, New Delhi

Located in the heart of Delhi , the National Museum is a treasure with a fantastic collection of over two lakh objects that span 5000 years of history. This grand institution is New Delhi’s oldest museum, dating to 1949. The vast collection showcases the cultural facets of the Indian subcontinent through the passage of time. On display are well-preserved and beautiful relics from the Indus Valley Civilisation, such as the iconic dancing girl figurine, detailed sculptures from the Bronze Age like the Nataraja, works of art from various civilisations of North and South India, and holy relics of Buddha’s remains. One can also browse through the cave paintings of Ajanta, fine examples of Thanjavur art, as well as Central Asian antiquities. Special exhibitions like a recent one on ‘Company Paintings’ further spread knowledge of India’s varied culture. The museum also periodically organises interesting workshops on the history of music, the significance of the naurasas (nine emotions expressed in the arts) and other subjects. A digi-first approach and well-explained summaries of the exhibits make it a must-visit. A massive remodelling project is currently underway where the museum will be moved to the North and South Blocks, and modelled to look like the Louvre Palace, in collaboration with the government of France. It is set to partially open by March 2025. Tickets : Adults / Indian Nationals – Rs20; Foreign Nationals – Rs500 Timings : 10am-6pm (Tue to Fri); 10am-8pm (Sat -Sun) Access : Metro access from Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan

India’s handicraft traditions are rich and varied, with each district of every state offering something uniquely beautiful. Giving voice to these stunning folk traditions is the National Crafts Museum located in Pragati Maidan, in a distinctive building designed by architect Charles Correa. One can browse through informative permanent exhibits that include a selection of folk and tribal art, rich and rare textiles, crafts associated with religious and ritualistic practices, as well as life-size recreations of village homes, stately havelis and Ayyanar shrines typical to rural South India. Temporary exhibits include displays on the history of Indian brocades, a glimpse into the culture of ‘Ganikas’ or courtesans, and most recently, a collaboration of Italian artist Tarshito with Indian craftsmen. Those with a discerning eye can also find handicraft gems from around the country at the rotating shopping exhibits and enjoy cultural performances from every corner of India. Don’t forget to round off your visit with a meal at the lovely Café Lota which serves a seasonal menu of regional delights. This museum helmed by Kiran Nadar, a philanthropist with a passion for collecting art, showcases contemporary Indian and international art. Established in 2010, KNMA currently has two branches – in Noida and Saket – with a third one opening soon. Apart from periodic themed exhibitions like the ongoing one on Australian aboriginal art in collaboration with the National Museum of Australia, this space has lots to offer. There are workshops for children and adults, cultural and theatrical performances, outreach programs in partnership with schools to encourage a love of art at a young age, as well as programs to promote the welfare of underprivileged children by teaching them art. Partition Museum, Delhi

Image may contain Helmet Person Animal Horse Mammal and Indoors

Despite being one of the most traumatic events of the last century, the Partition of India in 1947 rarely receives the attention it deserves. The Partition Museum run by The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust under the able guidance of Lady Kishwar Desai, attempts to change this. Originally opened in Amritsar, its newest branch in Delhi is housed in an iconic building known as the Dara Shukoh Library inside the Ambedkar University at Kashmere Gate. The building’s Mughal ramparts offset its colonial era arches instituted when it was the home of Delhi’s British Resident. The haunting permanent collection on the Partition is what makes this museum a must-visit. Striking photographs, memorabilia that people crossed the borders with, documentation that allowed them to start anew, movies capturing oral histories of survivors, cultural depictions of the Partition in films and books , and a number of interactive exhibits like a recreated train compartment and postcards one can send to the past, help bring alive the reality of that time for a young, curious audience. Tickets : Entry free Timings: Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm Access : Metro access from Kashmere Gate station

Gandhi Smriti Museum

Image may contain Clothing Glove Adult and Person

There are many museums dedicated to the father of our nation. However, the Gandhi Smriti Museum in central Delhi stands apart, as this is where he spent the last few months of his life. Birla House on Tees January Marg was a large private home lent to Gandhi for use as he saw fit. Its verdant lawns would see hundreds of people gather for a glimpse of their leader, and this was also where he was assassinated in 1948. In 1973, the building was taken over by the Government of India to commemorate Gandhi’s life and work. His room is maintained in an exact approximation of the day he left it – as sparse and frugal as one would expect it to be. The rest of the museum contains information on his life, personal struggles and political journey in leading our country to independence. An interactive multimedia section on the first floor is aimed at keeping children engaged, and a Khadi store on the premises attracts those keen to support the indigenous craft industries of India. Tickets : Entry free Timings : Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm Access : Metro access from Lok Kalyan Marg station, Udyog Bhawan station and Khan Market station.

Museo Camera , Gurugram

Image may contain Armory Weapon Indoors Architecture Building Museum Sword and Shop

While photography has been a beloved art form ever since the camera was first invented in 1816, it is rare to find a space that pays homage to the device that makes it possible. Photographer, historian, and archivist Aditya Arya sought to remedy that by opening the Museo Camera in 2009, with a curated selection of photography equipment largely sourced from his own vast personal collection. From then to now, this partnership between the India Photo Archive Foundation and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram, has grown to a prominent centre for photographic arts, relying almost entirely on crowdfunding. The museum’s permanent exhibits trace the history of the camera and its contribution to this art form. On display are contemporary and historical photographs, as well as rare equipment sourced from around the world. A number of interesting temporary exhibits, film screenings and performances keep the crowds coming in, as do the offerings of popular restaurant Fig at Museo located on the premises. Tickets: Indian nationals – Rs 200, Foreign nationals – Rs 300, Audio guides – Rs 150 Timings : Tuesday-Sunday 11am-7pm Access: Metro access from DLF Phase 3 station

National Rail Museum

9 best museums in DelhiNCR

The introduction of the railway system to India in 1853 could be credited with ushering in the modern era. This museum dedicated to the history, technology and culture surrounding the railways is popular with both children and adults. Kids love the interactive exhibits and train rides around the railway yard, through tunnels and past a variety of steam, diesel and electric locomotives, as well as wagons, carriages, royal saloons, armoured trains, rail cars and more. An indoor gallery houses smaller models of distinctive trains along with informative snippets of the history of the railways in general, and in India in particular, through historical photographs, documents, artifacts, furniture and equipment. A rail restaurant on the premises seeks to recreate the exclusive experience of dining in a first class coach. Tickets: Weekdays - adults Rs50, children Rs10; Weekends - adults Rs100, children Rs 20. Separate tickets for train rides. Timings: Tuesday - Sunday 10am-5pm Access: Metro access from Moti Bagh station

National Science Centre

The arts are certainly well-represented in the cultural space, but the sciences often fall behind. Fortunately, the National Science Centre, Delhi fills this void. Located in Pragati Maidan, this museum opened in 1992 with the intention of fostering an interest in science and technology, especially amongst young minds. One can browse through exhibits on ancient technologies, feats of engineering, India’s important contributions to science, a prehistoric gallery with interactive dinosaurs and other creatures, a ‘fun science’ floor with mazes and other illusion-based activities, and 3D fantasy rides which are a particular hit with children. Temporary exhibitions such as the one on the history of vaccines also attract a lot of attention. Be sure to book your fantasy rides as soon as you enter because spots go fast! Tickets : Rs 70; All rides and activities are separately priced Timings : Daily 9:30am-6pm except certain public holidays Access: Metro access from Supreme Court station and Indraprastha station

The Ultimate Delhi Art Guide

From grand, historically significant architectural landmarks to cutting-edge contemporary art hotspots, here’s a guide to all things art in our home city – curated with love by the India Art Fair team.

The grand history of Delhi is apparent to anyone who has spent even a day in the city – every part of the sprawling metropolis and national capital is dotted with awe-inspiring historical monuments from centuries past. From impressive forts, tombs, parks, markets, mosques, temples and more, the list of must-see places on any tour-guide website will run to pages and pages. But ask a Delhiite what truly makes this city special, and it’ll be the everyday, unassuming nooks and crannies that will be the most dear to them. So, here is our Delhi for you – including the “tourist-traps” that we actually think live up to the hype and the many many little art spots that have made this city truly ours. Welcome to Delhi, make yourself at home.

The Old Broadway of New Delhi

Located in the heart of the city, connaught place is your go-to place for discovering the best of the city’s history.

With the spectacular India Gate in the centre, Lutyens’ Delhi is dotted with cultural gems, including the oldest theatres, performing arts organisations and visual arts centres that have been around since pre-independence days. Lalit Kala Akademi to your left. Kamani Auditorium to your right. The National School of Drama and the Sahitya Akademi , a little way ahead. Triveni Kala Sangam on the first right turn, and Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts right next to it.  To the North, we have one of the absolute anchors of Indian art, the National Gallery of Modern Art with two massive historical buildings housing more than 1700 master-works of Indian art by some of our most important modernists including the ‘first Indian modernist’ Raja Ravi Varma , Bengal school stalwarts Abanindranath Tagore , Nandalal Bose and Jamini Roy and the artist ‘to whom Indian belonged’, Amrita Sher-Gil . Walk a little ahead and find Bikaner House   – one of the city’s grandest and active contemporary art venues – where exhibitions and events are always taking place.

And there’s more! Some of our most beloved galleries including Art Heritage , Art Pilgrim and Gallerie Nvya are housed in Triveni Kala Sangam , an important cultural and educational centre buzzing with students, artists and those flocking to the famous Triveni Cafe for an afternoon chai. Close by in Connaught Place is historic and modernist-focused Dhoomimal Art Gallery , and DAG , while pioneers of sculpture; contemporary art hubs, Art Indus , Blueprint12 , Modern Art Gallery and Palette Art Gallery , folk art champion Gallery Ragini and a wonderful display of the Chennai-based Apparao Galleries at The Lodhi hotel – all situated within a 500 metre radius in this central Delhi neighbourhood. Have a look at who is showing what on the India Art Fair Parallel tab and create your perfect art itinerary.

The Secrets of Defence Colony

One of delhi’s beloved residential neighbourhoods, defence colony is also home to some of india’s leading galleries and foundations, all located at a walking distance from each other.

Once the hold-out of veterans of the Indian Armed Forces, Defence Colony was one of the many occupational colonies that sprang up around modern-day Delhi during the 1960s. Now, a major art hub, Defence Colony or Def Col as it’s lovingly called, is one of our favourite places to spend our weekends, with its string of iconic galleries right across the street from the bustling lanes of Lajpat Nagar Market.

Vadehra Art Gallery , which has brought and nurtured some of the biggest names in South Asian art to Delhi since 1987, has two spaces here, one each for its modern and contemporary exhibitions. Nearby, Akar Prakar ’s New Delhi outpost houses one of the most exquisite collections of works from the masters of Indian art, and specially the Bengal school artists. Hidden in the lanes of Def Col is the Shrine Empire Gallery with its unique collection of the best and brightest contemporary artists not just from India, but across South Asia.

Also make sure to stop by Treasure Art Gallery and attend one of Serendipity Arts Foundation ’ s pop-up and artist-led events at their space in the neighbourhood. No visit to Defence Colony, however, is complete without a stroll through the Defence Colony Market, where cutlets from Kent’s and a slice of chocolate truffle cake from the iconic Defence Bakery are a must!

Lado Sarai, The Urban Art Village

With the iconic qutub minar as its backdrop, the lado sarai art district is a hub for emerging artists, designers and creatives .

Floating between the old-world charm of Delhi and the new-age charisma of Gurgaon , Lado Sarai is Delhi’s response to the idea of an urban village, housing some of the best hangout spots that are removed from the city’s hustle and bustle. Enjoy walking around its lanes and bylanes, spotted with countless small boutiques, design ventures, architecture firms and of course some of our favourite galleries nurturing up-and-coming talent – including the cutting-edge Gallery Latitude28 , Exhibit320 , Foundation of Indian Contemporary Art and Art District XIII , photographers paradise, Wonderwall and rising art space Gallery Art Positive.

In between galleries, look towards the skyline for picture-postcard views of the mighty Qutub Minar that frames the skyline almost like in a postcard. Any history buff must spend a few hours at the impressive Qutub complex, housing ruins and monuments dating from the Sultanate era in the 12th century, and which challenges the Acropolis in its majesty and beauty (top tip: don’t miss the hidden Jamali Kamali tomb in the complex for a taste of queer history). Afterwards, walk around Mehrauli for a taste of luxury, with its offering of fashion boutiques, restaurants and art spaces including the folk art-led Ojas Art at 1AQ, PHOTOINK , Art Centrix Space , and GALLERYSKE in Vasant Kunj and end your day at the ultra-contemporary gallery, Nature Morte at Dhan Mill.

A short drive away, don’t miss out on a visit to the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art ’s Saket space for its beautifully curated shows of the best Indian art, and the spaces defining what’s next in art – and check out Khoj Studios , both in the locality.

Art Outposts of Okhla and NOIDA

Locating in close vicinity to the fair venue, the expanding modern city gets its alt-art space in the industrial hub of okhla and noida.

Ask any member of the India Art Fair team for their favourite Delhi localities and Okhla will probably be on the top of their list. With the NSIC Exhibition Grounds being home to the fair for the longest time, Okhla holds a special place in our hearts.

The modern-day neighbourhood of Okhla has largely developed around the ancient Okhla barrage on the banks of the Yamuna River . An industrial strong-hold, it is not just the industrial warehouses or the Tughlaqabad Fort , but rather the individual contemporary galleries, artist studios and the architectural marvel that is the Jamia Millia Islamia that makes this locality an important stronghold in the art-scene of Delhi. The art spaces here give voice to the latest in the contemporary visual arts, be it Gallery Espace and Studio Art ’s experimental bent or Pulp Society ’s celebration of all things print-making. Fun fact: you can make your silk screen prints at Pulp Society’s workshop space during their open hours! When in Okhla, get your fill of street food in the thronging lanes of Jamia Nagar.

Situated between Okhla and the industrial hub NOIDA is the Okhla Bird Sanctuary , perfect for a robust morning walk surrounded by the beauty of the Yamuna river. Drive across the river towards NOIDA afterwards, not just a major centre for developing industries and corporate conglomerates, but also many arts and cultural organisations. Of these, most significant is perhaps the NOIDA Film City , home to large-scale production houses, entertainment giants and news TV channels thriving here, with their close proximity to the national public broadcaster Doordarshan headquarters in central New Delhi. Of course, there are special treats here for us visual art lovers too, with impeccable art the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art ’s permanent collection and Anant Art Gallery ’s gallery space both in the area.

Gurgaon, the Millennium City

An ever-growing metropolis, gurugram finds itself endowed with new arts and cultural spaces aimed to involve a new generation of artists, creatives and collectors.

The millennium city, hub of glistening high-rises and India’s corporate capital, Gurgaon , or Gurugram as it is officially known, is the ever-growing base of Delhi’s millennials. Not just the perks of modern life, Gurgaon also offers a wealth of contemporary art from across the country. From Museo Camera , the first museum in India dedicated to photography to budding galleries, Gallery Dotwalk are must visit spots between eating and shopping in Cyber City.

Last but not least, if in New Delhi during India Art Fair week, stop by, say hello, and immerse yourself in the beating cultural heart of the country.

Mustsee Art exhibitions in Delhi in September2023 including KNMA

It is a happening month for art exhibitions in Delhi! September kicked off on a high note for the capital city's art scene with the Delhi Contemporary Art Week 2023 —an annual celebration of contemporary artists across South Asia in Delhi's Bikaner House, led by pioneering and like-minded galleries championing the cause. While DCAW2023 has concluded, the city-wide fervour has barely died down. With so much happening, AD lists 5 ongoing art exhibitions in Delhi you should not miss.

Inherited Arts Forum Gallery

A testament to the enduring strength of storytelling and art's ability to breathe life into ancient tales, Arboreal Haven draws its name from a simplistic yet profound tale of a bird and a tree, and their harmonious coexistence. The artist, Mayank Shyam, weaves together these indigenous oral narratives—inspired from the cultural stories of the Gond-Pardhan community in Madhya Pradesh, where the artist is from—with striking visual arts for a captivating journey through time, culture and contemporary expression. The rich and vibrant works have a childlike charm and yet present nuanced details, reimagining and animating cherished narratives that were integral to the artist's childhood.

Arboreal Haven will be on display till 25 September 2023 at the Inherited Arts Forum Gallery.

Latitude 28

Co-curated by Saloni Jaiwal and Manan Shah, Which Sky do Birds Fly is a group exhibition featuring 11 artists that raises questions about belonging, the politics of space, and the impact of historical narratives on the sense of belongingness. With the untamed nature of digital media and opinions potentially slipping through the cracks of cultural and historic fabrics to cement themselves as fact, it is more crucial that ever to revisit written and oral history with a contemporary lens. Which Sky do Birds Fly decodes cultural belongingness across different vantage points, representing alternative histories that resist hegemonic narratives.

Nature Morte

Ayesha Singh's first solo exhibition at Nature Morte, the aptly christened Monumental Turns presents a triad of arresting sculptural installations that arise as a response to the gallery's spaces. Our cityscapes endure the complexities of human existence through centuries. Architecture translates these ravages of time, proving to be a tangible link to the past. A commentary of monumentalization, iconicity and nostalgia in a time when our reality is being perpetually erased and rewritten, Monumental Turns asks a fundamental question—to what do we tether our understanding of the present?

Monumental Turns will be on display till 24 September 2023 at Nature Morte.

Vadehra Art Gallery

The Patience of Ordinary Things, on display at the Vadehra Art Gallery is a group exhibition that tackles the notion of sculptural tactility—material constructions that engage in acts of storytelling to create impressions and even departures from subliminal beauty. Objects hold power, they have narrative layers and bring a brand new logic of visual understanding that departs from painting in art. A composition of works of important Indian modernists and post-modernists, The Patience of Ordinary Things speaks of creational urge and sensorial energy through experiments of sculptural forms.

The Patience of Ordinary Things will be on display till 7 October 2023 at Vadehra Art Gallery.

Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .

Since the 12th century, the city of Delhi has been home to several kingdoms. Each ruling dynasty left behind its own unique legacy, though the Mughals and the British, in particular, were a huge influence on the city’s art, architecture, religion, customs and cuisine. The result is a capital city brimming with different cultures, and there are monuments, museums, eateries and attractions dedicated to them all.

Champa Gali

art places to visit in delhi

One of the newest attractions in the city, Champa Gali is a hideaway street full of cafés with leafy courtyards, restaurants, stores and design studios. Take a break from sightseeing to spend a few hours buried in a book at one of the cosy cafés here. The tiny street is tricky to find but you’ll discover that it’s well worth the effort – the peaceful spot feels more like a quaint village lane than busy central Delhi.

Shahpur Jat

Rightly described as an ‘urban village’, Shahpur Jat has become a favourite among locals in the last few years. It’s a haven for Indian wedding shopping , where shopfront upon shopfront glitters with heavily embellished, jewel-hued saris. Make a pitstop at one of the award-winning restaurants and cafés in the area; The Potbelly Rooftop Cafe serves excellent home-style Bihari food.

Sunder Nursery

This heritage park was built by the Mughals back in the 16th century, and it’s back on the map after extensive renovations in 2017 transformed the space. Spread over a massive 90 acres (36 hectares) and containing more than 15 Mughal monuments, it’s an ideal place to visit on a sunny winter afternoon. On Sundays, pop-up organic market The Earth Collective sets up stalls piled with fresh produce, homemade pickles, artisanal cheese and traditional Indian home remedies.

Humayun’s Tomb

Explore Delhi’s splendid Mughal architecture

A majestic garden-tomb built in 1570, Humayun’s Tomb was the first mausoleum to be built in the splendid Mughal style which would become synonymous with the period, setting a precedent for subsequent Mughal architectural innovations, including the Taj Mahal. While it is renowned as the burial place of Emperor Humayun, the second Mughal ruler in India, more than 150 members of the Mughal family have also been laid to rest at this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Among its most impressive rooms is the Hall of Public Audience where 60 red sandstone pillars support the roof.

Jama Masjid

This belief, along with its stunning architecture, makes the Lotus Temple the perfect place for meditative introspection.

Agrasen Ki Baoli

art places to visit in delhi

One of the city’s lesser known attractions, Agrasen Ki Baoli is a unique construction close to the busy commercial hub of Connaught Place. art places to visit in delhi

A trip to Delhi isn’t considered complete without a tour of India’s oldest market, Chandni Chowk . National Museum

This large museum houses artefacts dating back as far as the Harappan Civilisation during the Bronze Age. Among the 5,000-year-old relics is the famous figurine of the Dancing Girl and Terracotta statuette of Mother Goddess from Mohenjo-Daro. Other fascinating displays include fragments of Buddhist stupas built in the 4th century BC during the Mauryan empire. The museum is fairly simple – you won’t find interactive exhibitions or fancy digitised displays, but it’s a great way to get to grips with India’s cultural history. Rising gracefully from lush gardens and surrounded by a symmetrical charbagh (four-part garden), Humayun's Tomb exudes an air of tranquility and grandeur. The use of red sandstone and white marble in its construction adds a captivating contrast to the monument's façade, making it a visual delight for visitors and photographers alike.Interestingly, Humayun's Tomb served as an architectural inspiration for the world-famous Taj Mahal, which was built later by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife. The intricate geometric patterns, arched entrances, and delicate lattice work seen in Humayun's Tomb can be traced in the design of the Taj Mahal.Today, the tomb complex houses the graves of several other members of the Mughal dynasty, making it a cherished historical site and a symbol of India's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, marvel at the detailed calligraphy adorning the walls, and immerse themselves in the captivating history that surrounds this majestic monument.

Rashtrapati Bhavan

Home to the President of the world’s largest democracy, Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi stands as a symbol of national strength. The nation’s most important democratic functions like the swearing-in ceremony of its elected leaders are carried out in these very grounds. The Rashtrapati Bhavan has been witness to honour giving ceremonies of the country’s bravehearts and achievers, signing of historic pacts between India and other nations, of India’s independence and republic day ceremonies, and the hosting of many world leaders. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is a true architectural masterpiece in its own right. The magnificent building spreads across 320 acres, including the splendid ‘Mughal Garden’ and the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum. The design of the Rashtrapati Bhavan mainly imparts the Mughal architectural styles blended with classical and grand European signatures, credited to the British architects- Edwin Lutyen and Hebert Baker. The building is also diversified with a number of other typically Indian motifs such as ornate Elephant statues on the outer wall or the main gate of the building with the ‘Jaipur column’. All in all, it is quite a visual treat to behold! The building is open to visitors by three different segments or tour circuits. The first circuit comprises of the Main building and the Central Lawn. The second circuit houses the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum Complex. In the same circuit, you can get a tour of the Clock Tower, the Stables, and the Garages. The third circuit has the magnificent Mughal Garden and other ancillary gardens of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Tourists can request a trip of each of the circuits separately on the days assigned for each segment respectively for daytime visits from 9 AM to 4 PM. There is much to take in and marvel at around the complex-- the intricate craftsmanship of carved marble statues, the sprawling Mughal Gardens featuring masterful landscaping concepts, the Clock Tower, and a myriad of presidential mementos preserved inside the Museum. The former, inaugurated by the British in 1931 to serve as the imperial capital, is the nation's modern capital and seat of government, while Old Delhi is considered by many as the symbolic heart of the greater metropolitan area.

One of the most populous regions in the world – it boasts a population of nearly 20 million people – Delhi is a heady mix of tradition and modernity, and is important as both a religious center and India's busiest international gateway. Its history is as old as the ancient Yamuna River, one of the most sacred rivers in Hinduism and a natural dividing line between New Delhi to the west and Old Delhi to the east.

Things to see and do in Delhi and New Delhi are plentiful and include experiencing its diverse arts and crafts industry, its many magnificent monuments, and countless performing arts venues. The area is also well known for its excellent cuisine, which includes delicacies from every corner of India. Delhi is also a shopper's paradise with numerous bazaars and markets, including Chandni Chowk, the country's most famous commercial area.

The Red Fort

The beautiful Red Fort (Lal Qila) was built by Shah Jahan in 1648 and served as the seat of Mughal power until 1857. This stunning structure, with its tall, red sandstone walls covers an area of more than two square kilometers, the entirety of which is crescent shaped and surrounded by a moat.

The impressive main entrance, the Lahore Gate, is so named as it faces towards Lahore in Pakistan, while the even grander Delhi Gate was used by the emperor for ceremonial processions. Entering through the Lahore Gate, visitors reach Chhatta Chowk, a 17th-century covered bazaar where items such as silks, jewelry, gems, and silverware can be purchased, along with souvenirs and food items.

The Naubat Khana within the Red Fort once housed the musicians who played for the emperor, and its fine galleries still contain many interesting musical instruments such as kettledrums, gongs, and cymbals. Diwan-i-Am, the Hall of Public Audiences, where the emperor would receive his subjects, is also worth seeing for its stunning white marble.

Qutub Minar

Completed in the 12th century, the beautiful Qutub Minar is India's tallest minaret. It's also now a UNESCO Word Heritage Site that attracts many international visitors eager to climb to the top for its breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

This ornate five-story tower rises more than 70 meters and is covered with intricate carvings featuring the history of Qutub along with inscriptions from the Koran. It's also notable for being constructed of a number of different types of stone (the first three stories are made of red sandstone, while the fourth and fifth stories were built with marble and sandstone).

The complex also includes the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, a mosque at the base of the tower; a gateway built in 1310; and the tombs of Altamish, Alauddin Khalji, and Imam Zamin. Also worth seeing is the 2,000-year-old Iron Pillar, the Alai Minar.

An eternal flame burns beneath the massive structure, and its walls are inscribed with the names of more than 90,000 soldiers who died in the conflict.

An enclosed garden with mature trees and flowering plants surrounds the building, and its pathway is now a memorial, with the spot where she was assassinated clearly marked. Several rooms have been dedicated to her son, Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1991.

Indira Gandhi's father, Nehru, is the subject of the equally interesting Nehru Museum and Planetarium (Teen Murti Bhavan) set in his former residence. The museum presents the leader's life and works, including interesting items pertaining to the struggle for freedom, with highlights including his bedroom, drawing room, and the study housing displays depicting highlights of his career.

Crowded shopping street in Delhi, India

The streets of Delhi burst with vibrant colors © Finn stock / Shutterstock

Delhi serves up an astounding cornucopia of history, culture, cuisine, commerce and street life, with countless sights and activities to keep visitors thoroughly engaged.

At first glance, the Indian capital can seem an overwhelming place to negotiate but give it time and you'll feel the chaos subside, revealing delicate vignettes of daily life and layer upon layer of ancient history, built up over 2000 years of settlement.

Here are 20 great things to do in India ’s fast-paced and frantic, but fun-filled capital.

A New Delhi street scene, a man cooking

1. Sample Delhi’s delectable street food

The street food in Delhi is legendary. Tangy delights such as chaat papdi (fried wafers loaded with potatoes, chickpeas, yogurt and chilli) or golgappas (fried hollow dough filled with chickpeas and spicy potatoes), are de rigueur in Old Delhi. Also seek out stuffed parathas (fried breads with vegetable fillings), sizzling kebabs and treacle-dripping jalebis (sweet swirls of fried dough).

2. Admire the grandeur of Humayun's Tomb

Humayun's Tomb combines Persian elegance with fine Indian craftsmanship, and its graceful lines are mirrored by the fiercely symmetrical Mughal Gardens that surround it. For the best photos, stroll here at dusk, or simply admire the architecture at any time of day. Believed to be the precursor of its more famous look-alike, the Taj Mahal , this Unesco-protected monument is well worth the relatively high entry fee.

3. Listen to qawwalis

The best place to hear qawwalis (devotional music) is at the dargah (tomb) of the Sufi saint Nizam-ud-din Auliya ; resounding professions of faith ring out around sunset at one of Sufism’s most revered sites. Buried close to his spiritual master is Amir Khusro, a celebrated Sufi poet from the 13th century. The qawwalis take on a special hue during Basant, the festival of Spring, when both dargah and devotees are adorned with yellow robes and blooms.

Red sandstone arches at Delhi's Red Fort

4. Explore the Red Fort

Explore the great sandstone carcass of the Red Fort , and you'll be whisked back to the last days of the Mughal empire. Though some areas are under restoration, the mixture of graceful Islamic structures and British-era additions still spins a tale of duelling empires. If possible, catch the Republic Day celebrations (January 26) here when the Prime Minister hoists the Tricolor from its resplendent ramparts, and browse the wares on sale in the Meena Bazar, once the exclusive domain of the ladies of the Mughal court.

5. Take the stress out of sight-seeing on a bus tour

You can catch an easy glimpse of Delhi on a Ho-Ho Bus tour for as little as Rs 500 a day. Except for Mondays, tourist buses run throughout the day at regular intervals, stopping at the biggest sights and giving visitors plenty of time to get familiar with the city's history and heritage. Choose from half-day, one-day or two-day tours depending on availability.

6. Go on a shopping spree

Some of the best shopping in the city can be found at Delhi's government emporiums, a string of temples to Indian craftsmanship lined up along Baba Kharak Singh Marg close to Connaught Place . For bargains, hit the flea market stalls nearby on Janpath and in Sarojini Nagar. For a one-stop shop for crafts from around India, look no further than Dilli Haat , near the INA metro stop, which also serves up great street food.

Coloured powder on display at Delhi's Spice Market

7. Lose yourself in Old Delhi

Get lost and confused in the narrow bazaars of Old Delhi, and feel like you've wandered into the medieval period. Every wrong turn springs a new surprise as you stumble upon such hidden delights as the home of the legendary Urdu poet, Mirza Ghalib, the towering Jama Masjid , India's largest mosque or Khari Baoli – Asia’s largest spice bazaar. On your explorations, keep an eye out for a series of well-preserved and colourfully painted Jain havelis (merchant's houses), built in the 18th century.

8. Explore the sprawling Sunder Nursery

To restore your inner equilibrium, step into the serenity of the 90-acre Sunder Nursery , a beautifully restored park dotted with Mughal monuments, water features and several hundred species of trees. Alive with birds and butterflies, the flowerbeds surround amphitheatres where you can see performances by talent from nearby Nizamuddin Basti.

9. People watch at Lodi Garden

To see Delhi at its most relaxed, wander around Lodi Garden on a Sunday afternoon, the perfect place for people watching. The gardens are dotted with ancient ruins from the Islamic Sayyid and Lodi dynasties so there's plenty to see; bring a picnic basket, relax with a book, or put its jogging tracks to good use.

Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official home of the President of India

10. Watch the Changing of the Guard

A relatively unknown Delhi attraction, the Changing of the Guard takes place on the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan every Saturday morning. The President’s Bodyguard, kitted out in their ceremonial regalia, put on an equestrian display for a gathering of no more than 200, against the backdrop of the imposing Presidential Palace.

11. Visit Indira Gandhi's former home

The ghosts of history swim through the former home of Indira Gandhi, Indira Gandhi Smriti , where she was shot dead by one of her bodyguards in 1984. There's a lot to learn about India's most powerful dynasty, and India's complex politics, as you wander through this period mansion.

12. Get acquainted with Indian art

Be flabbergasted by the wealth of Indian art at the National Museum , home to an astonishing collection of statues, woodcarvings, paintings and other treasures. Not far away, you can introduce yourself to India's avant-garde artists and their work, installations included, at the National Gallery of Modern Art .

Alternatively, take things up a notch by booking a table at Indian Accent in the Lodhi Hotel to sample a tasting menu blending flavors from across the subcontinent, or try the cluster of Mughlai restaurants at Pandara Market ; Pindi and Gulati are standout options.

14. See the city from a different angle

There are dozens of great books that bring Delhi's history to life. Use the map from William Dalrymple's City of Djinns for a novel way to explore the city, or grab Madhulika Liddle’s The Eighth Guest and Other Muzaffar Jang Mysteries and traipse around Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi) in the footsteps of her intrepid Mughal-era detective.

15. Put on your dancing shoes

One great way to feel the rhythms of the subcontinent is through a dance lesson at the Delhi Dance Academy . Their two-hour Namaste India Dance Workshop is an entertaining introduction to the Bollywood, Bhangra, and Garba styles you've probably already seen on the big screen. The cost includes costume hire and a video of the choreographed performance.

The ruins continue in the neighbouring Mehrauli Archaeological Park .

Sample the refined lifestyle of middle-class Delhiites at laidback Khan Market . Browse the bookshops and homeware stores, then hang out for a chat at Café Turtle , fuelled by coffee and gooey cake. Alternatively, get the youthful vibe by ordering a shake at Big Chill or sushi at Yum Yum Cha , or mix coffee and carafes at Perch , the city’s first wine and coffee bar.

Explore Khan Market effortlessly with GetYourGuide.  Book your tour today .

16 Offbeat Things to Do in Delhi, India

art places to visit in delhi

Greg Elms/Getty Images

Delhi's top attractions are dominated by ancient monuments, mosques, markets , and forts. No doubt, places such as Qutub Minar and India Gate are mesmerizing, must-visit sights. But once you've seen the tried-and-true in India's capital city, what's next? Here are some offbeat things to do in Delhi.

Do you have kids in tow? There are many fun things to do with kids in Delhi, even if you’re only spending 48 hours or as long as one week .

Browse Asia's Largest Wholesale Spice Market

Shraddha Gosavi / TripSavvy

Khari Baoli Road, next to Fatehpuri Masjid at the western end of Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, is home to the largest wholesale spice market in Asia. Spices formerly connected India to the West, and the market at Khari Baoli Road has been in business since the 17th century. However, Gadodia Market (which is on the south side of Khari Baoli and is where many of the spice shops are) was built in the 1920s by a wealthy local merchant. You'll get to see huge sacks of spices being transported and sold.

As fascinating as it is, the spice market is also super congested, and you're likely to feel overwhelmed trying to navigate through its interior alleyways by yourself. If you think the mayhem could be a concern, it's a good idea to see the market on the Old Delhi Spice Market and Sikh Temple tour . Do note that the market is closed on Sundays.

Marvel Over the Painted Houses at Naughara

Old Delhi and Chandni Chowk are usually associated with crowds and chaos. However, located just off Kinari Bazar, you'll find a tranquil lane with nine colorfully painted Jain havelis (mansions) that were built in the 18th century. This little hamlet is complete with an exquisitely carved white marble Jain temple at the end of the lane. Its interiors have some magnificent murals and paintings. Do note that leather and photography aren't permitted inside.

Go Inside a Monster's Mouth

Graham Crouch/Getty Images

A towering 108-foot-tall landmark statue of powerful monkey god Lord Hanuman rises above the railway tracks at Karol Bagh, to the northwest of Connaught Place in Delhi. Hanuman Temple has become a symbol of the contrast between traditional and contemporary Delhi, with the gleaming new Metro train zipping past. The statue is part of a Hanuman temple (Sankat Mochan Dham) at its base, which is entered by stepping through a cavernous carved mouth of a demon slain by the god. This is believed to ward off bad luck. Tuesdays attract the most devotees, particularly for the evening aarti (prayer ceremony), during which the arms of the statue move back and its chest opens to reveal images of Lord Rama and Sita. This mechanical show also takes place in the morning. The temple is located close to Jhandewalan Metro Station on the Blue Line.

Listen to Qawwalis at Nizamuddin Dargah

Anders Blomqvist/Getty Images

Nizamuddin Dargah, the resting place of one of the world's most famous Sufi saints, Nizamuddin Auliya, attracts Sufi devotees from around the globe. On Thursday evenings, its courtyard erupts with the soulful sound of live qawwalis (Sufi devotional songs) accompanied by traditional Indian instruments, which serenade the audience. One of the families that perform the qawwalis has been singing there for hundreds of years.

Nizamuddin Dargah is located in the Nizamuddin West neighborhood of New Delhi, surrounded by a bustling market and near Humayun’s Tomb. Get there just before sunset. Prepare to walk through alleyways and face large crowds, and touts and beggars if you're a foreigner. Dress conservatively, and you may wish to bring something to cover your head with (although it's not compulsory if you only enter the courtyard). You'll need to take off your shoes just before you go inside.

Ignore the shopkeepers who will insist on minding them for a fee. Delhi by Foot conducts an excellent walking tour .

Admire the Street Art

India's first public open-air art gallery, the Lodhi Art District, is situated between Khanna Market and Meharchand Market in south Delhi's Lodhi Colony. International and local artists have painted more than 50 murals, facilitated by St+art India. This non-profit organization aims to make art accessible to a broader audience in public spaces. While you're there, grab a bite to eat at one of these trendy restaurants in Lodhi Colony.

Attend the Changing of Guard

Christopher Pillitz/Getty Images

The Changing of Guard ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan is one of many similar celebrations that take place around the world (the most famous one is at London's Buckingham Palace ). It remains a relatively unknown attraction in Delhi. Revamped and relocated in late 2012, the ceremony now happens on the forecourt of the presidential residence every Saturday and Sunday morning. An equestrian display by the president's bodyguard on horseback in their ceremonial regalia has also been added. Since access to Rashtrapati Bhavan is generally restricted, the ceremony provides a fantastic opportunity to see the architecture of this immense building, once the centerpiece of New Dehli.

The starting time depends on the day: 8 a.m. on Saturday and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. The cost is free for all. Enter through Gate 2 or 37, and bring a government-licensed photo identification.

Walk Into the Street Life of Delhi

 Shraddha Gosavi / TripSavvy

Learn about the underbelly of Delhi on a guided walk through streets of Paharganj and the area around New Delhi Railway Station. Tours are led by children who once lived and worked on the streets themselves. This unique tour, recommended as one of the best walking tours in Delhi , aims to make the story of Delhi's street children heard and give a view of their city through their eyes. It's run by Salaam Baalak Trust, an organization that provides shelter, food, and support to the city's homeless street children. The tour is eye-opening, and sadly haunting and heartbreaking in parts, as you'll witness a brutal side of the city. However, it's also inspiring as it highlights how much the children can achieve if given the right opportunities. You'll even get to visit a Sikh temple's free langar community kitchen.

Learn About Life in a Delhi Slum

Joe McNally/Getty Images

Many people reside in substandard conditions in Delhi, and it's possible to go on a walking tour of a city slum to gain a greater understanding of how people live there. You'll get to visit a thriving small-scale industry, a temple, a family home, and a school. The tour is designed to be inspiring and educational, and a large percentage of the proceeds are used for the bettering of the community. It's definitely not the depressing poverty tourism you may expect.

See Indian Handicrafts Being Made

ferrantraite/Getty Images

The little-known Crafts Museum is a relaxing place to wander around and see artisans demonstrate traditional embroidery, weaving, carving, and pottery. There are also galleries with more than 30,000 exhibits of handicrafts from all over India, a lovely cafe where you can dine, and stalls that sell products at reasonable prices.

Be Served by Jail Inmates at Tihar Food Court

Notorious Tihar Jail in Janakpuri, West Delhi, has a couple of surprising attractions, namely a food court staffed by prisoners and a market that sells products made by them. The food court, started in 2014 to give the prisoners hospitality experience, was revived in early 2017. Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Kumhar Gram, the largest pottery village in India.

Volunteer at the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Kitchen

Filippo Maria Bianchi/Getty Images

Atmospheric Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, a prominent Sikh temple near Connaught Place, isn't just a great place to relax for a while. It has a huge kitchen where the langar (free food for anyone who wants it) is prepared. It's staffed mostly by volunteers, and you can go in and have a look around or even help out. As many as 40,000 meals have been served per day!

Explore Delhi on a Bicycle

Nikada/Getty Images

For a different experience of Delhi, take to the streets on a bicycle and immerse yourself in the various colors, smells, sounds, and tastes. Delhi By Cycle, a company started by a journalist from the Netherlands (the Dutch are known for their love of riding bicycles), offers a range of bicycle tours in the city. These include tours through various parts of Old Delhi and New Delhi, so you can explore different corners of the city. You'll need to be up early though since many of the tours start at in the early morning to avoid the city's traffic.

Take an Indian Dance Lesson

Have you seen India's eye-catching Bollywood dance moves and been transfixed by them? Delhi Dance Academy gives you the opportunity to learn them as well, at its fun two-hour namaste India dance workshop, especially for travelers. You'll be introduced to four Indian dance forms: Bollywood, Bhangra and Dandiya (this Gujarati folk dance is commonly seen during the Navaratri Festival ). The dancing is choreographed to popular songs and you'll get a two-minute video of your performance to take with you.

Check Out Champa Gali

Media India Group/ Arachika Kapoor

Delhi's hipsters have a new hangout, which they'd probably like to keep to themselves as not many people know about it yet. Champa Gali is an up-and-coming bohemian street lined with cafes, design studios, and boutiques. It's situated in Saidulajab, an urban village close to Saket in south Delhi. Up until the 1990s, the neighborhood was nothing but agricultural fields. It was later populated with cow sheds and furniture shops but is now transforming into a contemporary and creative community, led by the street's retailers. Impromptu jam sessions and pop-up bazaars take place there. Find it at Khasra 258, Lane 3, Westend Marg, Saidulajab. In case you're wondering, the street gets its name from the champa (frangipani) plants that decorate it.

Watch a Traditional Indian Wrestling Match

Frédéric Soltan / Contributor/Getty Images

Every Sunday afternoon, free traditional Indian wrestling known as kushti (or Pehlwani ) takes place at Meena Bazaar opposite the Red Fort (at the end of the park near the tomb of Maulana Azad). This style of wrestling blends a form of ancient Indian mud-fighting with Persian martial arts. Its popularity in India can be traced back to the 16th-century Mughal era.
