Atlanta water trouble: Many under boil-water advisory as Army Corps of Engineers assists

As the army corps of engineers joins the effort, many remain under a boil-water advisory..

atlanta travel advisory

Residents across Atlanta woke up on Tuesday under a boil-water advisory for the fifth day as authorities – including the Army Corps of Engineers – raced to finish repairs on one of two water mains that burst on Friday , causing sweeping disruptions and outages throughout the city.

Here's what we know about the ongoing water crisis in Atlanta:

Atlanta water main breaks cause citywide trouble

The first water main break occurred Friday morning in downtown Atlanta and immediately caused widespread problems, impacting two area hospitals, two local jails, a pair of stadiums, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and thousands of homes and businesses.

Hours later, a pipe in the Midtown neighborhood started gushing water, leaving more residents, businesses and public facilities under boil-water advisories and, in some cases, without service altogether.

Over the next two days, the disruptions piled up. A pair of Megan Thee Stallion concerts scheduled for Friday and Saturday at State Farm Area were canceled. Shelters across downtown reported water outages. The Georgia Aquarium and Zoo Atlanta closed. And the city asked residents not to drink from public water fountains and to limit their usage at home.

Repairs and a lifted advisory

On Sunday, the city announced that crews completed repairs on the water main break in downtown, though boil-water advisories were still in effect. These repairs restored service to the airport, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena, the Fulton County Jail, Atlanta City Detention Center, high-rise apartments and many other homes and businesses, the city said.

On Monday, the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management lifted the boil-water advisory for the area affected by the water main break downtown. This came after officials confirmed the area's drinking water met or exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards, the city said in a statement.

An advisory remains in place for Midtown and several other neighborhoods in east Atlanta as of Tuesday morning. Atlanta Public Schools for the second day canceled summer school and other programs, citing citywide water main breaks.

What caused the water main breaks?

Al Wiggins Jr., the commissioner for Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management, has said corrosion and decay caused the downtown leak, adding that it was difficult to repair because the break occurred at a junction of three water main pipes.

Officials have not provided much information on the Midtown leak, which also occurred at a water main junction. Wiggins said in a news conference that city workers were unaware what caused the break. When speaking about the ongoing water main repairs and disruptions, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens pointed to aging infrastructure.

In a statement on the Army Corps of Engineers' involvement in efforts to repair the Midtown leak, Dickens said, "We have sought their assistance because they have the most experience in handling a crisis like this. They will help us develop a plan to assess and evaluate our aging infrastructure."

The latest on repairs

The city on Tuesday said the damaged water pipe causing outages and advisories in neighborhoods across east Atlanta has been removed and installation has begun.

Around 2 a.m., crews removed the rusty pipe and started digging out the hole and pumping out the excess water, the city said in a post on social media. Three hours later, sections of 30-inch pipe were lowered and crews began installing them to the water system.

"Some of the remaining steps include completing the installation, making two taps, and pressurizing the line," the city said in a statement. "Thank you for your continued patience and support."

Everything tourists should know before visiting Atlanta, Georgia — weather advisories, what to pack, and more

  • If you're planning a trip to Atlanta, be aware of COVID-19- and weather-related advisories.
  • Atlanta is typically warm with mild winters and can get extremely humid over the summer.

Insider Today

In Atlanta, COVID-19 restrictions have eased throughout the city. Depending on the time of year, weather can be temperamental and sometimes extreme, so it's good to dress properly. Here are the latest guidelines and things you should know.

COVID-19 advisories

Georgia has relaxed COVID-19 restrictions, though local rules vary and can depend on business owners and management. I've seen some businesses with "masks, please" signs posted, but it's not very common.

Related stories

Some performance venues may request that you wear a mask, but those are few and far between now. Fewer still require proof of vaccination.

If you're arriving in Atlanta from an international location, you would follow the US federal travel guidelines . Masks are also not required on public transportation or in hubs .

COVID-19 testing is available through urgent-care centers, drug stores, and clinics.

Weather advisories

As a humid subtropical climate, Atlanta is mostly warm but can get oppressively muggy in the summer.

The weather can be fickle. The sky can be cloudless in the morning, then black out with rolling clouds and sudden thunderstorms in the late afternoon, then return to sun as if nothing ever happened. By the late evening, temperatures can be 20 degrees lower than that day's high. I find it to be a wild ride.

We have all four seasons, though for more than half of the year you can expect highs in the 70s to high 80s and lows between 50 and 70. Winter doesn't usually kick in until late November, and it's a short visit, with days warming up significantly by the end of March (though the evenings are sporadically cold through early May). It's as chilly as it gets by January, when temperatures can dip to the 20s. Snow is rare.

If you're coming in the winter, bring a good coat and pack sweaters and thick jeans. In the spring and fall, wear layers and don't forget your jacket at night.

In the summer, don't be shy about dressing light. Breathable fabrics and activewear are your friends, and so is sun protection — sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are musts. Don't forget bug spray if you plan to venture to some of the greener spaces.

LATEST UPDATES: Everything we know about Atlanta’s water main breaks

A TLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Since Friday, Atlanta has been battling several water main breaks that have impacted water service and kickstarted a water boil advisory.

Here’s everything we know about the situation

How many water main breaks have there been?

So far, there have been two major water main breaks and a handful of smaller ones.

The first was on Friday morning at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW and James P. Brawley Drive. The pipe carries a large amount of water through the city and broke due to age-related decay and corrosion, according to Atlanta Watershed Commissioner Al Wiggins Jr.

The department said Saturday evening that the broken main had been repaired. The water system then had to be repressurized slowly to prevent further issues with the system.

The second broken main was on Friday night at the intersection of 11th Street and West Peachtree Street NW . Officials said the two major water main breaks are not related.

Crews have also been called out to address a few smaller breaks, including those on Atlantic Drive NW, Beechwood Drive NW and Havenridge Drive NW.

Who has been affected by the water main breaks?

The water main breaks have affected several homes, office buildings, businesses and other public infrastructure.

On Friday, government buildings like the Georgia State Capitol, the Georgia Supreme Court and Atlanta City Hall were without water. Downtown Atlanta mainstays like the Georgia Aquarium, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, World of Coca-Cola and College Football Hall of Fame also closed.

Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown reported low water pressure and a water shortage, but service has since been restored, according to Wiggins Jr. Both hospitals were operating normally by Monday.

The water shortages even postponed State Farm Arena concerts by the ever-popular Megan Thee Stallion.

On Saturday night, Mayor Andre Dickens declared a state of emergency for Atlanta. Dickens said the declaration will allow the city to “access resources in an expedited fashion.”

Is there still a water boil advisory?

Currently, yes.

Initially, there was a boil water advisory for many parts of Atlanta. On Saturday afternoon, officials extended the advisory into part of Midtown. The Department of Watershed Management says the advisory will remain in place until the break in Midtown has been fixed. On Monday night, the boil water advisory was lifted for the area affected by the initial water main break. That area included Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive.

12:48 p.m. | Watershed Management said two new potential water main breaks are being investigated.

The department said one potential break is being investigated near the intersection of Euclid Avenue NE and North Avenue NE in Candler Park, and the other is being investigated near 1190 Atlantic Dr. NW - the same location where a water main break was repaired Saturday.

They said a temporary disruption of water service for residences and businesses may occur in the locations.

12:28 p.m. | In an update around noon Sunday, the Department of Watershed Management said crews continue to repair the broken water main at the intersection of West Peachtree Street and 11th Street in Midtown.

“They have made significant progress in localizing the repairs,” the department wrote. “There have been no water service disruptions, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to prevent such disruptions for residents in the area. Traffic control measures remain in place, so motorists and pedestrians are strongly advised to avoid the area.”

The department said “out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with Georgia EPD (Environmental Protection Division) guidance, the boil water advisory remains in effect for residents and businesses in the impacted areas.”

The department said after the broken water main at Joseph E. Boone Blvd and J.P. Brawley Dr. was repaired Saturday, water service was fully restored to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Fulton County Jail, Atlanta City Detention Center, “many of Atlanta’s critical facilities, and residents, including several senior high-rise buildings.”

The department added: “Additionally, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena now have water service, and scheduled events will occur as planned.”

The department said it will follow its line flushing protocols for the system as a precaution, and that it’s begun sampling the affected zones in the Joseph E. Boone Blvd & J.P. Brawley Dr. area to confirm no contamination.

They said the Georgia Environmental Protection Division will advise the department on when the boil water advisory can be lifted.

“If you are an Atlanta resident in need of water, please visit one of six designated AFRD fire stations: • Station 1 – 71 Elliott Street • Station 2 – 1568 Jonesboro Rd. • Station 10 – 447 Boulevard • Station 11 – 165 16th St. • Station 15 – 170 10th St. • Station 16 – 1048 Joseph E. The College Football Hall of Fame is open today during normal business hours.

The Georgia Aquarium is open as scheduled. Guests with tickets for May 31 or June 1 may exchange them to visit Sunday, June 2

Zoo Atlanta is also open. The zoo’s location remains under the boil water advisory, so some of their beverage options may be limited, they said.

10:22 a.m. | Watershed Management is offering some helpful tips to anyone who may be experiencing water discoloration.

The department said: “While the water is safe to use for cooking and cleaning, DWM recommends not drinking or doing laundry until the water is clear as clothes can become stained.

“Flushing the cold water pipes in your home or business usually clears up the discolored water and will allow trapped air to be released. After water main repair work is completed in your area, follow these steps to flush the cold-water lines in your home or business.

Run cold water taps for about five minutes or until the water runs clear.

  • Begin with the lowest faucet in your home or business and then open the other faucets one at a time, moving from your lowest floor to your highest.
  • Once the water runs clear, usually in five minutes or less, turn off your faucets in the same order, lowest to highest.
  • You should also flush your refrigerator’s water lines.

Southwest Airlines has increased the price range of certain perks that allow passengers to board sooner and better pick their preferred seat.

The carrier raised the fee range for its EarlyBird Check-In and Upgraded Boarding options. The new fees are $15 to $99 one-way per passenger for EarlyBird Check-In, and $30 to $149 per segment per passenger for Upgraded Boarding, according to Southwest’s Optional Travel Charges page .

The previous cost of EarlyBird Check-In ranged from $15 to $25, and $30 to $80 for Upgraded Boarding, the airline site One Mile at a Time reported .

RELATED: If you hate airplane turbulence, here are the best places to sit

Southwest flights are known for their open seating, meaning the carrier doesn’t assign seats nor can customers choose their seats before the flight. Instead, passengers are assigned a boarding group (A, B, or C) and position (1-60+) after checking in.

Once on board, passengers can sit in any of the remaining seats.

New airline complaint program aims to help travelers

A new partnership between the U.S. Department of Transportation and a bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general aims to streamline efforts to resolve airline consumer complaints. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the program at Denver International Airport. The program comes in response to the record numbers of airline customer complaints their offices are fielding.

For those who want to board sooner, Southwest’s Upgraded Boarding perk allows flyers to upgrade their boarding position to A1 through A15, 24 hours before the flight. This allows them to be among the first to board the plane and get their preferred seat.

The EarlyBird Check-In lets flyers automatically check-in before the traditional 24-hour check-in, getting an earlier boarding position and a better opportunity to pick their seat.

RELATED: The cost of your next flight is likely to go up, industry group warns

In a statement, Southwest Airlines told FOX Television Stations that the price range increase "is a result of our regular evaluation of pricing."

"This price range increase is a result of our regular evaluation of pricing for Ancillary Products based on market trends and Customer demand and will generate incremental revenue in support of the Company," the statement reads.
