Author Anietra Hamper travels year-round and knows the best months to experience destinations, whether you are looking to save a little money or visit when all the attractions are in full swing.

April is a month of new beginnings (hello, budding blooms), revitalization (we missed your energy, sunshine), and awesome deals on vacations. Whether you're hoping to visit Europe , the Caribbean , or as far away as Indonesia, there are a ton of incredible places to visit in April.

Cherry blossoms in April at Heian Shrine, Kyoto, Japan

A bonus: April is considered the shoulder season in many tropical destinations , which means travelers can enjoy cheap hotel rates and comfortable temperatures before the influx of summer crowds and stifling summer heat set in.

For the winter warriors who are not ready to let go of the snowy season, places like Lake Tahoe still have skiing for end-of-the-season runs. Whether you want to tackle some hiking in the Rocky Mountains or witness the breathtaking cherry blossoms in peak bloom in Japan, April is a great time to travel.

Plan your trip with our list of the best places to travel in April.

1. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

2. moab, utah, 3. london, england, 4. venice, italy, 5. yangzhou, china, 6. amsterdam, netherlands, 7. lake tahoe, california, 8. kyoto, japan, 9. cayman islands, 10. newport beach, california, 11. sydney, australia, 12. bali, indonesia, 13. denver, colorado, 14. washington d.c., 15. athens, greece, 16. agra, india.

Puerto Vallarta

The month of April is an ideal window to visit Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when the weather is comfortable, and rates for hotel rooms are more affordable . This month rests between the high season in the winter and the rush of summer tourists, when hotel and airfare rates skyrocket.

Temperatures are pleasant and rain is almost non-existent in April, meaning more days for enjoying the beautiful beaches and better opportunities to stroll the street markets to find souvenirs or taste some culinary dishes beachside. There is no shortage of things to do in Puerto Vallarta .

You will enjoy your time exploring the historic sites, like the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe during the day and walking along the Boardwalk Malecon to soak in the views of the ocean in the evenings, where you can catch a free dance performance at the amphitheater.

Arches National Park

If a visit to the red rock canyons of Moab, Utah is on your bucket list, then planning a trip in April is a great time of year to do it.

Early spring is a perfect time for hiking in Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park , when the weather is cooler and the summer tourists are still a few months away. The climate is perfect for outdoor activities like mountain biking or taking the three-mile trek to capture the iconic image of the Delicate Arch and see this national treasure up close.

Many people travel to Moab for the incredible hiking and unforgettable canyon views but there are so many other things to do in Moab , from biking and horseback riding to taking a four-wheeler trek through the national parks. April is also a good month for camping around Moab .

You will want to plan ahead when making reservations and add enough days to your stay to get in everything that you want to do, especially if you plan to do a lot of hiking.

Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament

London is almost always a hot spot for tourists year-round, but April will enable you to enjoy the sights before the summer rush kicks in for domestic and international vacationers. Some attractions require booking tickets for specific days and time slots or may not be open certain days of the week, so you will want to plan ahead if there are specific places on your must-see list.

Another upside to visiting in April is that the weather is more comfortable, especially for walking around the streets of London.

Accommodations in central London stay at a premium most of the year, but you can likely find a break on lodging by staying just outside the city and taking the train.

Kew Gardens is unmissable at this time of year, and you'll want to carve out some time to wander through other London parks and gardens , like Hyde , Regent , and Richmond Parks , when flowers are coming into bloom.

April is a great time to take advantage of the best scenery, from the top London attractions like the Tower of London and the beauty surrounding Buckingham Palace and Kensington Gardens .

Gondola in Venice

April is a great month to visit the historic Italian city of Venice. The weather is comfortable, with spring temperatures starting to emerge and less humidity than in the summer months. You'll be able to enjoy dining on your homemade pasta al fresco, as long as you pack a sweater, that is.

As for tourists, the boom does not start for several months, so you will still have plenty of elbow room to enjoy local attractions and gondola rides along the Grand Canal. Take advantage of fewer crowds as you explore St. Mark's Square and St. Mark's Basilica .

April is a beautiful time to see Venice, and hotel rates are still at a lower level than in the busy summer tourist season.

The Lotus Bridge in Yangzhou

Yangzhou is one of the best places to travel in April. The reason is made clear as soon as you catch sight of its stunning flowers and rare and ancient bonsai trees. During April, everything in Yangzhou blossoms into an Instagram-worthy glory.

One of the best places to visit in China , Yangzhou lies in the Jiangsu Province , which borders the Yangtze River . The city is known for its gardens, like the Ge Garden and the elaborate floral displays on offer at Slender West Lake . There are also more than 200, centuries-old miniature private gardens located throughout the ancient city.

Beyond the colorful variety of flowers throughout the city and in the public gardens, Yangzhou is known for its history of producing scholars, poets, artists, and famous geishas. You can find outdoor evening performances among the gardens at Slender West Lake and enjoy a cultural experience detailing the city's history through music, dance, and poetry.

Tulips along a canal in Amsterdam

By April, winter's icy chill has left Amsterdam, making it a more enjoyable time to wander around the Dutch city's iconic canals and interesting neighborhoods. While you may run into a spot of rain, Amsterdam's impressive museums, like the Ann Frank House , Van Gogh Museum , and Rijksmuseum , are the perfect places to take cover.

Temperatures hover in the high 50s Fahrenheit but can jump, so layers are your best bet. Aim to be here for King's Day on April 27 th if you want to see the city decked out in all its orange glory. Decorated boats pack the canals, live music is pumped through the streets, a city-wide market opens, and plenty of delicious treats are on offer.

Wander through colorful Jordaan , enjoying its unique markets, boutique shopping, and tasty restaurants before boarding a boat cruise. The NEMO Science Museum is especially worthy of a visit, if only to gaze at the creative contemporary design.

Lake Tahoe

If you have a hard time letting go of winter and want to push your skiing opportunities out as long as possible, an April trip to Lake Tahoe is in order. This recreational area in the Sierra Nevada Mountains sits on the state line between California and Nevada , where the snowcapped mountains enable skiing to last later than most ski resorts in the United States .

The hard-core snow bunnies can take advantage of the cool daytime temperatures to log a few more runs on the slopes. The other advantages of visiting Lake Tahoe in April are the smaller crowds and lower prices as the ski season comes to an end. You may also find cheaper prices at luxury resorts around Lake Tahoe.

There are many Lake Tahoe ski areas and resorts to choose from, and a few have even remained open until June in some years.

Japanese woman under the cherry blossoms in Kyoto

The top reason to travel to Kyoto, Japan in April can be summed up in two words: cherry blossoms . Kyoto cherry blossoms begin in mid to late March and peak in April, when the blooms are spectacular and the city fills with an unforgettable fragrance.

Much attention is paid to forecasting peak viewing times each year, so locals and visitors can have the best experience with the cherry blossoms accenting the ancient architecture, tea houses, pagodas, and gardens.

Given the beauty of Kyoto at this time of year, it is no surprise that it is a popular time for tourists, so you will want to book hotel rooms at least four to six months in advance. Prepare yourself for a hefty bill — this is definitely not one of the cheapest places to visit in April .

Kyoto is also the hub of Japanese culture. While here, make your way to visit the famous Ryoanji Temple rock garden, antiques stores in Gion , and peruse the 100 vendor stalls at the Nishiki Market .

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

While the Cayman Islands are a popular winter destination for people who want to get away from cold weather, April is an ideal month for those who want to visit and avoid the crowds of snowbirds or incoming summer vacationers.

April sits on the shoulder season, with lots of benefits, including better deals on resorts, more availability on tours and excursions, and fewer people in general.

Temperatures do not change much throughout the year in the Cayman Islands, hovering around the 80s during the day, but the April bonus means that you can visit on the tail end of the dry season and have fewer rain showers overall.

Great weather means more time for the beach and some of the top tourist attractions , like Stingray City and the Cayman Turtle Centre. If you plan to stay on Grand Cayman, be sure to book a boat trip to visit Little Cayman and Cayman Brac during your visit.

Newport Beach Pier at sunset

The area of Newport Beach, California is beautiful anytime of the year, but if you want to catch the gray whale migration , April is an ideal time to visit.

With so many dolphin and whale excursions available from Newport Landing, it is best to visit this area in the spring for the optimal viewing opportunities and before the summer crowds arrive.

There are many beaches to enjoy and boutique shops in the town. You can also enjoy the Balboa Fun Zone , which opened in 1936 and still has the wholesome, old-fashioned amusement park thrills, like a Ferris wheel and midway games.

Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge at dusk

Sydney in April is nice because it is the fall season, which means cooler temperatures and fading summer crowds. You can also take advantage of declining hotel rates and airfares during this short fall window.

Since there are fewer tourists flocking to the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour , you will have more time (and space) to enjoy some of the most popular Sydney attractions . You will also have more room to enjoy Hyde Park , an inner city park, and the Royal Botanic Garden .

Even though temperatures are cooling off heading into the Australian winter, you can still enjoy comfortable weather at Sydney's famous beaches like Manly Beach , Bondi Beach , and Coogee Beach .

Rice fields in Bali

The tropical paradise of Bali is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Indonesia , and April is one of the best times to go. April marks the start of Bali's dry season , which usually lasts through October, so it is a great time to experience the beaches and all the other things to do around the island.

The beautiful weather in April will also make it easy to visit some of Bali's temples, like the Uluwatu Temple and Tanah Lot Temple .

Nusa Dua will be bustling by April, and it is where you will find many high-end hotels and resorts. You can book one of the luxury water villas to relax in, so you do not even have to walk to the beach.

Be advised that since April begins a popular time for tourists heading to Bali, you will be paying a premium for accommodations and airfare and you will want to book far in advance.

Head to Ubud if you want a quieter rainforest retreat. While you're there, be sure to check out the spectacular Ubud Monkey Forest , but keep all food and water well hidden, as the clever little monkeys can open backpacks.

Downtown Denver

April is one of the best months of the year to visit Denver because the shoulder season has mild temperatures, and the rush of tourists do not arrive until after May. The outdoor scene in the city starts to come alive in April with bustling activity along the 16 th Street Mall and Larimer Square .

Just outside of downtown, you can rejuvenate with a drive along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway or an outdoor concert at the unforgettable Red Rocks Amphitheatre .

You can find low hotel rates, but they will begin to rise by the end of the month. Denver is a major airport hub with plenty of flights available, so if you plan ahead, you can keep an eye out for discounted airfare alerts.

Cherry blossoms and the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C.

If you are lucky enough to visit the United States capital of Washington D.C. in April, you may catch a glimpse of the cherry blossoms in bloom along the Potomac River and enjoy the annual parade that accompanies this springtime celebration. Washington's parks are beautiful this time of year.

Temperatures can be cool, but comfortable for walking around the grounds of the U.S. Capitol Buildings and along the Smithsonian Mall and museums.

Since so many of the museums and monuments are free in Washington D.C., you can get away with an affordable vacation this time of year . Due to D.C.'s popularity, you can also find hotel and airfare deals that will keep your costs down.

There are many tours available to the White House and other attractions , but sometimes Washington D.C. is best explored on your own at a leisurely pace.

The Parthenon

There's hardly a bad time to visit Athens, Greece, but there are a few reasons why April is a great month to go. Topping the list is the fact that the peak tourist season doesn't hit until summer, when visiting the Acropolis and Ancient Agora are almost too crowded to enjoy. An April Greece vacation will mean fewer tourists and more availability on popular tours.

The spring temperatures in April are another reason to visit, when cool evenings and mild days make touring outside comfortable. Take a jacket for dinners on the coast where it can be breezy.

You will also find decent deals on hotels and airfare to Athens in April before the summer push for reservations.

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Do yourself a favor and add Agra to your list of places to travel in April. While the days are hot (you can expect temps in the mid to high 90s) and humid, April offers visitors a ton of bright sunshine, cheap prices , little to no rain, and few tourists.

You can't visit Agra without a trip to the iconic Taj Mahal , the city's most famous landmark. While you're here, carve out some extra time to explore the nearby Agra Fort , Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah , and the captivating Mehtab Bagh park.

Be sure you have enough water when wandering around this remarkable city in Uttar Pradesh, and stop in at the numerous restaurants to enjoy a cool respite from the sometimes oppressive heat.

May's temperatures skyrocket, making it an almost unbearable time to visit. April is technically the beginning of India's summer, which means it only gets hotter through July. Monsoon season begins then and runs through September, so it's best to avoid the area at that time.

Looking for an April getaway? The first full month of spring brings flowers to many places around the world, including the world-famous cherry blossoms that paint Washington, D.C. pink each year. There’s still time for snow sports fans to get in a few runs, but we have suggestions for travelers who are more than ready for sunshine and warm weather, too. Plus, a total solar eclipse will be visible from several North American destinations, so you should start planning now if you want to see this astronomical event. Here are the best places to travel in April 2024 in the U.S. and around the world.

Located in northeastern New York State about 300 miles from Manhattan, the Adirondack Mountains will be one of the best areas in the Northeast to see the April 8 solar eclipse.  “Guests in the Lake Placid region will experience spectacular views of the eclipse over the Adirondack Mountains as day turns to night for a brief three minutes,” according to Matthew Wheeler, general manager of High Peaks Resort . In the meantime, activities include late-season skiing, the newly remodeled Lake Placid Olympic Center, outdoor adventure at New Vida Preserve, and the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, home to one of the world’s largest collections of Winter Olympics memorabilia.

Where to Stay: High Peaks Resort is offering special eclipse packages and events. There’s also the Grand Adirondack Hotel, The Point on Saranac Lake, and The Lodge at Schroon Lake.

Spring is lovely in the nation’s capital, and the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival from March 20 to April 14 makes it a truly special time. I had the good fortune to be in Washington during the bloom a few years back, and I still recall the visitors’ awe, as well as my own, at the beauty of the delicate blossoms overhead and carpeting the ground at our feet. Mild weather encourages time outdoors strolling along the National Mall, The Wharf, and Union Market. The many fantastic museums in D.C. offer something for every interest, as well as perfect places to shelter on a chilly or rainy day.

Where to Stay: At The Wharf, Washington’s exciting waterfront neighborhood, stay at the Pendry Washington D.C or InterContinental Washington D.C. The Wharf . Other top hotel picks include The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington D.C., Salamander Washington D.C., and The Morrow Hotel.

These coastal cities, located less than 100 miles from Los Angeles, are ideal for a spring (or summer) escape from the city. Oxnard is known for strawberries, and in April, the berries begin to ripen, continuing throughout the summer. The region produces one-third of the state’s strawberry volume, and visitors flock to the area to pick their own fruit and enjoy strawberry shortcakes, pies, ice cream, and beverages. Nearby Ventura, home to beaches, hiking trails, and ferries to Channel Islands National Park , will host the California Strawberry Festival at Ventura County Fairgrounds later in the year from May 18-19.

Where to Stay: Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach in Oxnard reopened recently after a multi-million dollar transformation. Waypoint Ventura offers unique accommodations in restored vintage trailers.

Fans of wine, gorgeous scenery, and shoulder season travel will enjoy Napa Valley in April. Summer crowds are still months away, California poppies are in bloom, and you might catch the end of the wild mustard season’s bright yellow flowers . Tasting rooms are open, and Sullivan Rutherford Estate (a stunning winery I visited last year) offers Merlot Mastery , an immersive educational experience. At Silverado Resort, guests can up their racquet games with Pickleball Camp (April 20-21) and “Backhands, Vines, and Volleys” tennis camp (April 25-27), or go for a round of golf. Take in vineyard views from the Napa Valley Wine Train or enjoy the scenery with a drive among grapevines and fields of spring flowers.

Where to Stay: Meadowood Napa Valley is a personal favorite for its perfect combination of luxury and rustic atmosphere. I also enjoyed my stay at the romantic and elegant Poetry Inn where each suite is unique and all offer spectacular views.

Looking for spring skiing? Consider Utah’s capital your starting point and spend a few days in the city before you head for the slopes. You’ll find lively nightlife, restaurants, breweries, pubs, and views of snow-covered mountains to add to your anticipation. Less than 40 miles away, ski at Alta, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird, and Park City, where there are snowy slopes for all levels of skiers, snowboarders, and winter sports fans. While I’m not a skier, I loved my winter visit to Park City where I tried snowshoeing (loved it!) and enjoyed the charming downtown and excellent restaurants.

Where to Stay: In Salt Lake City, we recommend staying at the Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City or Kimpton Hotel Monaco .

Temperatures in the low 80s with sunny days and cool nights make April an ideal time to visit Tampa. Spring also brings the Tampa Bay Wine & Food Festival (April 9-13), with a Chef Showdown competition, tasting events, and celebrity guests. The annual Taste at The Straz on April 27, held at the Straz Center on Tampa’s Riverwalk, raises funds for its outstanding theater productions, operas, and concerts. Stroll along the river, explore Water Street , and take a boat ride (or rent your own as I did on a trip last year, floating along in a craft that resembled my old ‘57 Chevy). Another personal favorite is the Ybor City Historic Walking Tour, where you can learn about Tampa’s role as a center of cigar production.

Where to Stay: JW Marriott Tampa Water Street features Beacon, a rooftop lounge with panoramic views. The Tampa Edition is a new five-star hotel on Channelside Drive, and the boutique Hotel Haya is a great option in Ybor City.

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

Flowers are blooming in the city that never sleeps, and visitors can find cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden, and more than 30,000 varieties of flowers at the annual Macy’s Flower Show. The free event also includes seminars, demonstrations, and more. Spring showers are the perfect excuse to see a Broadway show, go shopping, or visit one of the best museums in New York City . There are also plenty of free things to do in NYC — stroll through Central Park, walk along the High Line, or enjoy the view from the Brooklyn Bridge.

Where to Stay: The InterContinental New York Times Square is a luxury spot, steps from Broadway theaters. I recently spent two nights there — I loved the buffet breakfast and The Stinger bar and restaurant. The new Virgin Hotels New York City is located in NoMad, a central location ideal for tourists who want to see it all.

The “Garden Island” is Hawaii’s oldest and northernmost island. Kauai’s weather is wetter than the other islands, but the rewards for waiting out those showers are waterfalls and rainforests with lush vegetation. Because April is part of the island’s shoulder season, you might score a deal on flights or accommodations, and you can still catch the tail end (pun intended) of whale-watching season. From relaxing on Kauai’s gorgeous beaches to tubing along mountaintop canals, there are many ways to enjoy the island.

April is one of the best times to visit London because it’s before the arrival of summer’s visitors and after the chilliest days of winter. The annual London Marathon, happening on April 21, is one of the world’s most popular, with Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, and Canary Wharf along the route. After the excitement, relax with afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason, The Dorchester, or Brown’s and indulge in savory and sweet treats. If a cocktail is more your style, the city’s hotels offer plush lounges and creative menus — and we’ve rounded up the top cocktail bars in London so you can find the best sips.

Where to Stay: Last year, I stayed at the charming Beaverbrook Town House and toured the Chelsea Townhouse. The Westin London City features specialized services for marathon runners through a new Westin Hotels & Resorts program.

From Perth’s sophisticated urban vibe to the historic port town of Fremantle and the beaches of Rottnest Island, visitors have a variety of ways to enjoy Western Australia. Warm weather continues into April, and Perth’s Indian Ocean shores feature sandy beaches and stunning sunsets. Rottnest Island, a 30-minute ferry trip from Fremantle, is car-free with beaches, walking trails, cute quokkas , and an opportunity to learn about the island’s history and Aboriginal people with a visit to the Wadjemup Museum . Tour the area from above on a seaplane flight or from the sea aboard Seabourn’s Kimberley cruise, an expedition along the rugged coast. In the Margaret River region, about 100 wineries welcome visitors with tours and tastings.

Where to Stay: In the Margaret River region, Chambré Estate is a newly renovated lodge, and adults-only Edge Luxury Villas are built over a lake in a forested area. In Fremantle, stay at the recently restored historic Warders Hotel.

Renowned for UNESCO World Heritage Sites including ancient temples and shrines, Kyoto is especially beautiful during spring when the cherry blossoms bloom. The pink and white sakura , reminders of rebirth after winter, are celebrated with festivals, parades, and nightly illumination. April weather is pleasant for exploring Kyoto’s gardens, teahouses, and historical sites and for savoring traditional kaiseki cuisine. Kyoto is a short bullet train trip from Tokyo, and with InsideJapan Tours , guests can explore Kyoto on a private journey, small group tour, or self-guided adventure.

Where to Stay: Choose Roku Kyoto, LXR Hotels & Resorts or Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto located next to Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Five-star Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto offers a Sakura Experience with private garden tours, a visit to a local temple, and afternoon tea, according to general manager Manabu Kusui who invites guests “to immerse themselves in the rich heritage and traditions of Kyoto through these cultural experiences.”

This lake in northern Italy can thank James Bond and George Clooney for some of its fame, but the historic villas, resorts, and charming towns that line its shores get most of the credit. April is shoulder season, when the hotels are reopening and visitors begin to arrive. The summer months, naturally, are the popular season, but spring is beautiful and the weather is mild. A boat ride is the best way to see the elegant villas with intricate landscaping, and several are open to the public for tours. I toured Villa del Balbianello a few years ago and marveled at the grounds, the building, the art, and the history. Lake Como’s resorts are among Italy’s most beloved, as confirmed by Travel + Leisure’s readers in the 2023 World’s Best Awards .

Where to Stay: Il Sereno topped the list, with Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni and Villa D’Este also receiving high scores in 2023. I have wonderful memories of Grand Hotel Tremezzo — so I’m happy it’s a readers’ favorite, too.

You can combine a visit to a great city with diverse neighborhoods, fabulous restaurants, and mild weather with a convenient late-season ski trip when you visit Vancouver. Just 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Grouse Mountain offers skiing and snowboarding until early May as well as a skating pond, dining, and more. About two hours north, world-class snow sports await at Whistler Blackcomb with more than 200 runs over 8,000 acres of terrain. Home to Vancouver International Airport, nearby Richmond offers history, art, an authentic fishing village, and the Richmond Olympic Oval, an indoor multi-sport center.

Where to Stay: In the heart of Vancouver, Rosewood Hotel Georgia and Fairmont Pacific Rim are luxurious options. Kim Carmichael, the spa director at Fairmont Pacific Rim, told T+L about their Nordic spa, a new outdoor hydrotherapy experience with hot and cold environments in a circuit. “With April being a time when we experience a rapidly changing climate in Vancouver, it’s an ideal opportunity for self-care.”

The third largest of more than 60 islands that make up the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda offers pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and national parks. Swimming, diving, snorkeling, and boating are among things to do, and hikers can enjoy the view from the top of Gorda Peak. According to Emily Oakes, vice president of business at Oil Nut Bay, “The crystal blue waters and temperate weather, along with fewer crowds compared to earlier in the year, make April a lovely time to visit our beautiful island. Travelers wishing to fully immerse themselves in the island can book tours to explore The Baths, see Devil’s Bay National Park, and even scuba dive to the Wreck of the Chikuzen.” Visitors can arrive by air from Miami, St. Thomas, and now from San Juan via a semi-private jet . Tortola , Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and several private island resorts are also popular BVI destinations.

Where to Stay: Rosewood Little Dix Bay , Bitter End Yacht Club , and Oil Nut Bay are among the best resorts in the British Virgin Islands, with luxe accommodations and ocean views.

Spring begins the European river cruise season, with most lines starting in mid-March. France is especially beautiful in April, and cruising is an ideal way to see many of the cities and small towns along the country’s rivers. Guests aboard AmaWaterways Paris and Normandy cruise begin in Paris and cruise the Seine to Le Havre, the historic Normandy Beaches, medieval Rouen, and Monet’s home in Giverny before returning to Paris. Viking offers a variety of ways to cruise the rivers of France, including a scenic Lyon and Provence cruise . Uniworld Boutique River Cruises also features cruises along France’s rivers, including trips as long as 22 days with the Ultimate France itinerary.

Where to Stay: No need to worry about finding hotels — unless you extend your trip at either end of your cruise. You also won’t have to plan transfers, find restaurants, or pack and unpack between stops — these are just a few of the major benefits of exploring Europe via river cruise. I’ve cruised the Rhine, Danube, Douro, and Nile, and I’m a fan of the relaxed pace, shore excursions, and views of the passing scenery that a river cruise provides.

The 10 Best Places to Visit in April

best places to travel in april

There’s no denying that April is one of the best months to travel. In the Northern Hemisphere, the weather starts to warm up, flowers begin to bloom, and the spring season kicks off with lively festivals. And in the Southern Hemisphere, many bucket list beach destinations enter their shoulder season, meaning fewer crowds and lower prices. Whether you’re looking for a place to celebrate Easter or an eco-friendly escape to commemorate Earth Day, there’s no shortage of beautiful locales. Below, we’ve outlined some of the best places to travel in April.

Kyoto, Japan

Lea Pinter / EyeEm / Getty Images

With cherry blossom season at its peak and an average daily high of 68 degrees Fahrenheit, April is a wonderful month to visit Kyoto .  Hanami  (or cherry blossom viewing parties) takes place around the city, and scenic picnics happen in parks and gardens under a canopy of florals. Head to the Philosopher's Path —a walking route lined with sakura trees—for some premium cherry blossom viewing. Be sure to explore other Kyoto highlights, including temples, shrines, and centuries-old architecture. To immerse yourself in the city's old-meets-new atmosphere, stay at  Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto , which boasts a stunning 100,000-square-foot  pond garden  that dates back to the 12th century. If time allows, take a day trip to Arashiyama on the city's outskirts, where you can explore bamboo groves, temples, and scenic hiking paths—or take a boat ride along the Hozu River.

With its gorgeous overwater bungalows, turquoise waters, and awe-inspiring marine life, the Maldives is a dream destination for ocean lovers—and one of the best times to visit is during the shoulder season month of April. With daily temperatures around 84 degrees Fahrenheit, the weather is still warm and sunny for the most part (though it’s not uncommon to experience the odd shower), yet the islands are less crowded. For Earth Month, opt to stay at  Coco Collection’s  luxurious and eco-conscious hideaways,  Coco Bodu Hithi Resort  and  Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu , which weave sustainability and traditional Maldivian culture into the resort experience. Beyond the beautiful thatched-roof villas filled with hand-carved furniture is an impressive commitment to protecting the surrounding marine life. Case in point:  The Marine Turtle Rescue Center  at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu is the first and only veterinarian-led turtle rescue center in the Maldives. The resort works with local communities to protect nesting sites and prevent poaching.

Whistler, British Columbia

Whistler is the ultimate spring ski destination, with March and April welcoming longer days, warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and usually excellent backcountry ski conditions. Whistler's  World Ski & Snowboard Festival  takes place every April and brings a week of concerts, events, and snow sports competitions with it. It's a great excuse to experience the vibrant mountain culture of this British Columbian town. There's also plenty to do off the mountain. Head to the  Audain Art Museum , a 56,000-square-foot gallery with an expansive collection of First Nations and British Columbian art, or visit the  Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre  to learn about the rich culture of the First Nations groups that have stewarded the region for millennia. After all the action, be sure to carve out an afternoon at  Scandinave Spa Whistler , a tranquil Nordic spa with hot pools, steam baths, Finnish-style saunas, cold plunges, and fireplaces surrounded by the lush forest. For a luxe respite at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, stay on the Gold Floor of  Fairmont Chateau Whistler , a boutique hotel with elegant rooms, a private lounge, and top-notch dining experiences.

April is the perfect time to visit the red rock playground of Moab. During this month, the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, creating ideal conditions for hiking, climbing, and mountain biking. Head to  Arches National Park , which has over 2,000 natural sandstone arches that can be appreciated from the trails or on a scenic drive. The beautiful views continue at  Canyonlands National Park , which boasts dramatic canyons, mesas, and buttes. For a truly unique experience, try rafting along the Colorado River. The water levels are typically higher in April than in the summer months, and there are fewer crowds, so you can get the breathtaking vistas all to yourself. There are several campsites and hotels, but for an unforgettable glamping experience, stay in one of  Under Canvas Moab's  safari-inspired accommodations. Each tent is outfitted with a plush king-size bed, en suite bathroom, and luxury hotel-grade amenities, while guest perks include nightly fires with s'mores and morning yoga.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai draws travelers to northern Thailand year-round, but the city is most lively in April when the  Songkran Festival  welcomes the Thai New Year (April 13 to 15). During this time, the streets are transformed into a giant water fight, with locals and tourists armed with water guns, water balloons, and buckets. After drying off, visit the city’s many ornate temples, including  Wat Phra That Doi Suthep ,  Wat Chedi Luang , and Wat Phra Singh. While there’s no beach, there’s plenty of nature to explore beyond the city, including the  Doi Inthanon National Park , where Thailand’s highest mountain rises from a lush forest. In the evening, head to the night markets to sample local food and shop for traditional crafts before retiring to  Anantara Chiang Mai Resort , a serene respite on the banks of the Ping River.

Rome, Italy

Whether you celebrate Easter or not, visiting Rome during the Holy Week is a memorable experience. The festivities begin at the start of the month after Palm Sunday and include a Good Friday procession, when a flaming crucifix is raised into the night sky in front of the Colosseum, followed by an evening mass at St. Peter's Basilica. On Easter Day, another mass occurs in the square before the Pope's blessing to the congregation. Several other cultural events happen in April, including the Natale di Roma (Rome's birthday) celebration, which takes place on April 21 and includes parades, concerts, and fireworks. There's never a dull moment at the design-forward W Rome , which is set across two 19th-century palazzos next to the Spanish steps and features a bustling rooftop bar, a restaurant with a live DJ, and a "secret garden" with topical foliage if you need a break from all the action.

Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos is proof that you don’t have to travel far to bask in paradise. Less than a four-hour flight from many East Coast cities, the Caribbean archipelago is a perfect choice for long weekend getaways, especially in April, when the dry season begins. During this time, temperatures peak between 84 degrees F to 87, and rain is minimal. Along with snorkeling and scuba diving adventures, travelers can see magnificent Atlantic humpback whales migrating through the area in April. Meanwhile, the turtles residing around Mangrove Cay are best appreciated from a clear kayak or paddleboard tour with Through the Looking Glass . Those looking to relax on the soft, white sandy shores should look no further than Wymara Resort & Villas , a luxury resort on the secluded western end of the world-renowned Grace Bay Beach. In addition to its 91 rooms, the property offers stunning one and multi-bedroom villas overlooking Providenciales’ famous turquoise blue waters, plus some of the best dining on the island. For an unforgettable dinner, head to the resort’s restaurant Indigo, where award-winning chef Andrew Mirosch spotlights fresh, locally sourced ingredients, Caribbean flavors, and specialties from his native homeland of Australia.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans comes alive in April when temperatures rise to the 70s, making it easy to spend the day wandering, eating, and listening to music. Time your trip around the French Quarter Festival , which takes place in mid-April. If you miss it, the beloved New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival follows close behind at the end of the month, with multiple stages, food vendors, and some of America’s best musicians. The great thing about New Orleans is that you can have a fantastic time just by walking around the city. There’s always live music on street corners or inside the jazz clubs between Bourbon Street and Frenchmen Street. And with several well-appointed hotels like the opulent Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans , which overlooks the Mississippi River, blending all the action with some rest and relaxation is easy.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Holland's picturesque flower fields bloom between late March and mid-May, so April is an excellent time to see them at their peak. From Amsterdam, take a 40-minute drive to Keukenhof , one of the world's most famous flower gardens, to see millions of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and other flowers in bloom. Beyond the iconic gardens, you'll also find plenty of colorful tulip fields in the countryside around Amsterdam. If you happen to be in the Dutch capital on April 27th, you can also join in the King's Day festivities, a series of parades, parties, and outdoor concerts that celebrate King Willem-Alexander's birthday. Regardless of the time of year, there's plenty to do in Amsterdam—from visiting the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum to simply taking a stroll along the canals and enjoying the city's blossoming trees. The Dylan Amsterdam offers an understated and elegant base spread across two historic canal-side buildings in the heart of the Nine Streets area, plus a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Newport Beach, California

Every year, thousands of gray whales migrate along the Newport/Laguna Beach coastline from Alaska to Baja California, and back again between January and April. While that alone is a good enough reason to book a whale-watching tour during the migration season, you’re also likely to spot other varieties of whales and several dolphin species in this marine life-rich stretch of Southern California. There are several tour operators in the area, including Newport Landing Whale Watching , which offers tours from Newport Harbor, and Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari , which is a Dana Point-based eco-friendly tour operator with a catamaran with underwater viewing pods and a hydrophone to hear the whales sing. After spotting the magnificent creatures, carve out some time to explore the charming shops and restaurants on Balboa Island or go on a scenic hike in Crystal Cove State Park, where it’s common to spot whales and dolphins from the trail.

  • Best for Families: San Pancho, Mexico
  • Best Tropical Getaway: Bimini, Bahamas
  • Best European City: Budapest, Hungary
  • Best Flower Blooms: Kyoto, Japan

Table of Contents

1. Kyoto, Japan

best places to travel in April Kyoto Japan

Japanese cherry blossoms are in full bloom in Kyoto in April, so prepare to be wowed by the pops of pink throughout the city. Spring in Japan can be cold, especially at night, so make sure to bring layers and prepare for some rain. Even with slightly chilly weather, April is still a fantastic time to explore the bamboo grove, dine at some of Japan’s best restaurants , and get a dazzling view of the city at the Kojingamine outlook. Sold? Me, too. Find more ideas on how to  enjoy Japan’s best sites here .

2. San Pancho (San Francisco), Mexico

chilling in San Pancho

On Mexico’s Pacific Coast sits dreamy San Francisco, aka San Pancho (Pancho is a nickname for Francisco). Although it’s close to the bustling backpacker town of  Sayulita , San Pancho remains as chill as can be, making it a  better choice for families  or anyone looking for a quieter beach vibe.

April is an ideal time to visit San Pancho (as long as you avoid spring break) because it’s still dry season, yet tourism dips. That means warm, sunny days perfect for relaxing on the beach and a good chance you’ll be able to find some solitude. Find out how to get the most out of  your trip to San Pancho here .

3. New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

best places to travel in April New Orleans

If you thought Mardi Gras was the only time to catch a great party in the French Quarter of New Orleans, think again! Beyond having amazing weather in April, the liveliness of the city makes for a stellar visit. Head there at the end of the month to catch the  New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival , or go in the middle of April for the  French Quarter Festival . Either way, you’re bound to have a blast listening to live music and dancing the night away.

New Orleans is famous for its swanky  boutique hotels , so don’t miss out on the chance to stay in one. They’re the ultimate place to relax after a long day (or night)  exploring the city . Traveling solo? We’ve got you covered with  this solo travel guide for New Orleans .

4. French Polynesia

best places to travel in April French Polynesia

Who said French Polynesia is only worth visiting during  whale-watching season ? Though you won’t find whales in April, there’s still plenty  to do in French Polynesia  for any traveler who loves visiting an island paradise in the off-season. If you’ve always dreamed of visiting Tahit or Bora Bora , particularly staying in an overwater bungalow , you can score better deals than in the summer.

It’s the perfect time of year to island hop, go for a jungle hike, or snorkel in the crystal clear waters. What’s not to love?

5. Cape Town, South Africa

best places to travel in April Cape Town

If you’ve always wanted to visit South Africa but have been intimidated by the high prices, April may be your best shot to go. As the weather is much cooler and can be more rainy this time of year, it isn’t a popular time for tourism, so you may be able to score an epic deal on flights and accommodations.

Cape Town is one of the most popular places to visit in Africa for solo travelers due to its beauty. There’s a ton to do , it has beautiful boutique hotels , and it’s generally quite easy to meet people here. If you don’t mind a bit of rain, this is also a great time to go on safari, as safari season is ramping up for the year in April.

6. Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA

best places to travel in April big bend national park

Big Bend National Park makes a lot of our lists of the best places to travel in the US because, truthfully, it’s one of the most underrated spots and incredible to visit almost any time of year. If you’re looking for someplace warm to escape to this April, this could be your perfect getaway.

Big Bend has one of the most interesting landscapes in Texas, with high mountain peaks and low valleys with roaring rivers. Spend your time hiking, climbing, and  stargazing . Did I mention the night skies here are immaculate? Consider camping in the park to get the most out of it, as the sunrises and sunsets are too epic to miss. Start planning your trip to  Big Bend National Park with this complete guide .

7. Moab, Utah, USA

best places to travel in April Moab Utah

Moab is another one of those places where it’s awesome to visit year-round. Since this charming town is right in between  Arches National Park , Canyonlands National Park , and Dead Horse State Park, it’s no surprise that it gets crowded in the summer months when tourism peaks. That’s why an April visit is ideal. You can expect warm weather but won’t have to deal with the crowds as long as you avoid spring break. Find out how to maximize your time in  Moab here .

8. Maldives

best places to travel in April Maldives

Sunny skies and crystal clear waters await you in the Maldives this April as you’ll catch the tail end of the dry season. It’s one of the  best scuba diving spots in the world , and besides the incredible array of colorful fish, you might be able to spot a magnificent blue whale.

Although Maldives is famous for its luxurious overwater bungalows that might give you sticker shock, it’s completely doable to  visit on a budget , and April is a good time to do so since it’s not peak season.

9. Amsterdam, Netherlands

tulips amsterdam

April is peak tulip time in and around Amsterdam, making it my top choice for when to visit this charming city. The best place to see the tulips is at Keukenhof Gardens, and you’ll find a  complete guide for how to visit here.  Beyond seeing colorful blooms, April also sees excellent weather and thinner crowds. Rent a bike to explore Amsterdam as the locals do, and don’t miss out on world-famous sites like the Anne Frank House and the Vincent Van Gogh museum.

10. London, United Kingdom

best places to travel in April London

Winters in London can be harsh and grey, so it’s no surprise that the city comes alive every spring in celebration of warmer weather, longer days, and brightly colored blooms. London makes its way to many travel bucket lists because there’s always something exciting to do in this iconic city, even if you are traveling alone . If you’re easily overwhelmed by big cities (same!), consider starting your trip with a fun  double-decker trolley sightseeing tour  so you can get a lay of the land.

11. Chiang Mai, Thailand

doi chiang dao

Chiang Mai is known as a backpacker haven in Northern Thailand, though it’s so much more than that. Magical night markets, glittering temples , gentle elephants , and beautiful rolling green hills make Chiang Mai an absolute must-visit on any  Thailand itinerary .

April’s hot and dry weather means the natural areas around the city won’t be as lush and green as the rainy season, but since it’s the tail end of peak tourist season, you’ll enjoy thinner crowds. Spend you entire trip exploring Chiang Mai , or venture out on an  epic day trip . Either way, there’s a good chance it might become your new favorite place in Southeast Asia .

12. Lexington, Kentucky, USA

best places to travel in April

Although Lexington flies under many travel radars mostly undetected, it’s a memorable city definitely worth a visit. Famous for its horse racing, bourbon, and history, there are plenty of  things to do in Lexington.  So, why April? For starters, the weather is beautiful. Temperatures are slightly chilly, with a mild breeze and a slight chance of a springtime shower. It’s also the peak season for flowers like tulips, freesia, ranunculus, hyacinth, and anemones, which you’ll see throughout the city.

13. Zambia & Botswana

best places to travel in April Zambia Botswana

If you’ve been dying to go on safari, this is your chance. Visit Zambia and Botswana for the safari experience of a lifetime, splitting your time between South Luangwa National Park and Chobe National Park . You’ll see majestic African elephants, elegant Springboks, ferocious lions, and plenty more species.

Since the landscape is still green, yet the watering holes are starting to dry up and animals start to congregate in smaller areas, April’s weather conditions are ideal for a safari. Better yet, it’s not the peak season for tourism so you’ll be able to enjoy the beauty of nature here without having to share it with many others.

Can’t make it to Southern Africa this April? You can also join me there this fall on my Namibia, Zambia, and Botswana tour!

14. Reykjavik, Iceland

iceland packing list blue lagoon

If Iceland has been on your bucket list but you’re not about the freezing cold temps of winter or the insane summer crowds, April might be your shot to cross it off. Though it’s still quite cold in Reykjavik this time of year, it’s more tolerable than the wintertime. That means you’ll be able to fully enjoy the gorgeous Blue Lagoon, surrounding hot springs, and  epic road trips .

Another huge perk of visiting Reykjavik in April is that you might be able to score a sweet deal on accommodations since it’s still the low season. Considering that Iceland isn’t exactly a cheap destination,  saving money  on anything is a win.

15. Antigua, Guatemala

best places to travel in April Antigua

Pairing charming cobblestone streets with centuries-old architecture, Antigua might feel more like the Spanish countryside than Guatemala. As one of  Central America’s best places to visit , Antigua offers travelers a healthy dose of adventure, natural beauty, and hospitality. It’s also a great spot for solo travelers, as long as you keep these safety tips in mind.

April is a fantastic time to explore Antigua because it’s the end of the rainy season, there’s plenty to do, and it’s not peak tourist season as long as you avoid spring break. If you’re feeling especially daring,  climb the legendary Acatenango Volcano .

16. Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast

best places to travel in April Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is one of the best places for a road trip in Central America. Start in Uvita , where you’ll find pristine beaches and gushing waterfalls. Then, make your way to Dominical and Manuel Antonio before setting out for the Nicoya Peninsula. There, you’ll find iconic beach towns like Montezuma and Santa Teresa, all waiting for you to explore.

April is one of the best months of the year for a Pacific coast road trip in Costa Rica because the weather is warm and sunny, with only the occasional rain shower. Compared to peak season in December and January, April is tame and you’ll be more likely to score a deal on accommodations and car rentals. What are you waiting for? The open road is calling you!

17. Murano and Burano, Italy

best places to travel in April Murano burano

Murano and Burano are two small islands in Italy , both popular to visit on a day trip from Venice. During the peak tourism season in the summer months, getting to these charming and colorful islands can be a huge pain. Long lines, scorching sun, and scammers waiting to overcharge you for a tour are all avoidable by visiting in April when the crowds are much more manageable and the weather is cooler.

While Venice is worth visiting on its own, no trip there is complete without going to Murano and Burano. Each island has its own personality, with Murano being famous for its glassmaking and Burano for its vibrantly painted houses. They’re more than just a photo op, though, and both are spilling over with history and culture unique to the area. Curious? Here’s a full Murano and Burano guide to help get you ready for your visit!

18. Budapest, Hungary

best places to travel in April Budapest Hungary

As one of the most beautiful cities in Europe , it’s no surprise that Budapest makes it onto so many travelers’ bucket lists. How can you say no to the world-class architecture, famous thermal baths, and endless cultural landmarks? The best part is that Budapest is exceptionally solo female traveler friendly and a great budget pick if you have your eyes on Europe for your April adventure.

April in Budapest is dry and warm, making it a great time to explore the city on foot or enjoy the outdoors at City Park. There is so much to do here, and April’s mild weather is ideal for getting the most out of it!

19. Petra, Jordan

best places to travel in April Petra Jordan

Fancy a visit to one of the seven wonders of the world this April? Petra is more than just a photography lover’s dream, it’s an ancient ruined city with over 2,000 years of history. The famous Treasury is just the beginning of what you’ll find here, and April is a fantastic time to visit, especially if you want to enjoy the Jordanian sun without the scorching heat.

Jordan can be an intimidating place to visit for solo female travelers, which is why we have a full guide here . Check it out!

20. Bimini, Bahamas

things to do in bimini bahamas

If the tropics are calling you, chances are those voices are coming from somewhere in the Bahamas. Not only is this island archipelago a tropical paradise, but Bimini, Bahamas is a fantastic spot for solo female travelers ( here’s why! ). Spend your days relaxing near the sea, or get adventurous by swimming with rays or sharks. There’s plenty to do in Bimini to keep you moving and grooving all April long.

The weather in the Bahamas is warm and sunny in April, with little rain. As long as you avoid spring break, the crowds are relatively thin compared to the high season, with storms and hurricanes being extremely rare.

By Caitlin Morton

Marrakech Morocco

April is a time when many folks are feeling flush. Why not spend that tax refund on a trip? The best places to travel in April is a long list, but we've whittled it down to a select ten. As spring begins to emerge and temperatures climb, it’s the ideal season for a long-haul splurge to Europe before the crowds take over. Closer to home here in the US, National Park Week provides the perfect excuse to appreciate the great outdoors. And this year, we’re particularly excited to visit some of our top 2024 destinations .

Without further ado, these are the best places to travel in April, including a book festival in Barcelona, luxury hotels in the Middle East, and flower festivals that will really put you in the springtime spirit.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Gothic Quarter Barcelona Spain

Temperatures reach the mid-60s in Barcelona come spring, making it one of the best places to travel in April. You’ll be there in time for a shoulder season trip without the crowds that flood La Rambla or La Sagrada Familia in the summer. Even better, April 23 marks the Festival of Sant Jordi, when locals receive roses from their lovers—a tradition that began in the 1500s. Since 1926, though, it’s also doubled up as a celebration of writers Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare (who both died on April 23) and has become known as Book Day.

Make your way to the Passeig de Gràcia, which will be lined with stalls selling books, roses, or both, and look out for the Gaudi-designed Casa Batlló —the façade tells the story of Saint Jordi and the dragon he slayed. Stay in the nearby Eixample neighborhood at the Almanac Barcelona for its rooftop bar with 360-degree views across the city and a guest-only pool.

The Adirondacks

We recently named Upstate New York one of the best places to visit in 2024 , thanks to the area’s timeless landscapes and new hotels. But the Adirondacks are where you should head in April—especially if you want to be visually wowed by this year’s solar eclipse. The region (which makes up roughly a fifth of the state) will be in the path of totality during the eclipse, expected to occur for a whopping 3 minutes and 35 seconds on April 8.

The greatest totality will occur in Tupper Lake, and the town is going all out for the event . The Wild Center—an indoor/outdoor nature museum—will have telescope viewing stations and pinhole viewer tutorials, while the Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory will host astronomers and astrophotographers to give further context to the event. And since you’re in the Adirondacks area, you might as well stay overnight at the Lodge at Schroon Lake , which reopened in June 2023 after an extensive $21 million renovation.

Cherry blossoms in Osaka Prefecture

Osaka, Japan

Forecasters predict that Japan’s cherry blossom season will kick off in late March, though you can find peak sakura in Osaka well into early April. To get the most of the small (but enchanting) window, head first to Osaka Castle—a popular tourist attraction surrounded by some 3,000 cherry trees that come alive this time of year. The castle’s Nishinomaru Garden is a particularly lovely place to view the blossoms, especially as the garden and castle get illuminated at night.

Other spots around the city to peep blossoms include Katsuo-ji Temple, which has some of the latest-blooming cherry trees in the area; and Satsukiyama Park, a mountainside green space about 30 minutes north of central Osaka in Ikeda City. Between strolls in pink-shrouded nature, be sure to indulge in Osaka’s other claim to fame: food . The city currently has 92 Michelin-starred restaurants (including three 3-star eateries), but don’t sleep on the street food scene here either. Follow the young crowds to the Dotonbori district, and you’ll find plenty of stalls serving deep-fried vegetables and savory pancakes you won’t soon forget.

Marrakech Morocco

Marrakech, Morocco

There are many benefits to visiting Morocco in the spring: milder temperatures, thinner crowds, and a mix of ancient and modern wonders that make it an excellent introduction to the Arab world. Marrakech is an especially accessible city, thanks to relatively inexpensive flights and friendly locals —not to mention a wealth of cultural attractions. Check out the city’s Old World spice markets before touring the Museum of Contemporary African Art Al Maaden.

Another reason to visit Marrakech? La Mamounia , a.k.a. one of the best hotels in the entire world. Every inch of the palatial property drips with luxury, from the liveried guards at the entrance to the Olympic-sized pool with Champagne service. It’s the ultimate representation of Marrakech’s old-meets-new aesthetic, with modern cuisine and amenities offered just steps away from the ancient medina.

Carlsbad, California

Every year from March to May, ranunculus flowers take over 50 acres of The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, with peak bloom occurring in April. This year, visitors can expect a full calendar of floral-themed activities , ranging from flower crown workshops to tea parties in the garden.

When you’re not busy filling your camera roll with florals, rest up in peak luxury at the Park Hyatt Aviara , a Hot List and Readers’ Choice Award winner. The 200-acre coastal resort attracts visitors with an 18-hole golf course, expansive spa, and both family-friendly and adults-only pool areas. The 327 spacious guest rooms recently underwent a massive redesign (book a coastal view room for balconies overlooking the Pacific), and the relatively new Ember & Rye restaurant is already one of the hottest spots in town for steak and seafood.

As its name suggests ChampagneArdenne is the birthplace of bubbly and one of the most beautiful regions in France....

Champagne, France

As its name suggests, Champagne-Ardenne is the birthplace of bubbly and one of the most beautiful regions in France . Springtime is known as “bud burst” season, when new buds appear in vineyards across Champagne and growers restart the vine-growing processes. Off the farm, travelers can enjoy mild weather perfect for horseback riding and winery picnics.

To soak up as much of the region as possible, treat yourself (and five of your friends) to a private sailing onboard Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne , the newest luxury river barge in Belmond’s Les Bateaux collection. Now in its second year, the vessel offers week-long itineraries in some of the most exquisite accommodations imaginable—think an open kitchen on the main deck and gold soaking tubs in the bathrooms—and, of course, a Champagne bar. Belmond has also partnered with Maison Ruinart (France’s original Champagne house) to give guests private tours of the historic vineyards and lunch cooked by chef in residence, Valérie Radou.

St Lucia Caribbean

The winter doldrums may be gone by the time April rolls around, but that doesn’t make the thought of a tropical escape any less appealing—especially one in the Caribbean. There are places in the region to suit every type of traveler, but we generally love St. Lucia this time of year. Not only does the island welcome perfect weather in April (i.e. warm and dry), but it also sees a dip in tourist numbers between the winter and summer holidays.

That weather will come in handy if you want to take advantage of St. Lucia’s outdoor activities, like hiking the Pitons , boating on Marigot Bay, and snorkeling off Anse Chastanet. But depending on where you stay, you might find it hard to leave your home base. St. Lucia has some of the best resorts in the Caribbean : Book a stay at Ladera Resort for rustic suites and private plunge pools, Sugar Beach for next-level spa treatments, or Jade Mountain for the best views on the island.

Lisbon Portugal

If you have yet to experience the magic that is Portugal, April would be the perfect time to finally book that trip. Aside from escaping the huge summer crowds, you’ll typically find milder weather (around the mid-60s) and less expensive hotel rates during this time than in the impending high season. The relative lack of tourists in Lisbon will be particularly lovely, letting you fully appreciate the city’s iconic pastries and tiled architecture.

You can choose your own adventure from there, but we highly suggest renting a car and venturing northeast into the Douro Valley —one of Europe’s oldest and most beautiful wine regions. Make Six Senses your home base, a wellness retreat that has been impressing visitors with sleek decor and holistic spa treatments since it opened in 2015. The resort offers tastings in the wine library, but you should definitely make day trips to some of the region’s local wineries. The Portuguese hospitality titans known as the Douro Boys have several outposts, with Quinta do Vallado and Quinta do Crasto standing out.

The Best Places to Travel in April Istanbul

Think Holland is the best place to see tulips in the spring? Think again. Istanbul has held its international tulip festival every April since 2006, a celebration in which up to 30 million flowers bloom in the city’s parks, gardens, and even traffic roundabouts. Over 500,000 tulips are planted in Sultanahmet Square alone, creating a stunning, colorful carpet below the Blue Mosque. You can also catch special concerts and photography exhibitions during the festival.

Even if you don’t make tulips the focus of your trip, Istanbul has a slew of fresh hotels and cultural attractions that make it an incredibly exciting destination to visit right now. Tour many of Istanbul’s new and restored attractions along the Beyoglu Culture Road, a two-hour walking trail that goes past the Taksim Mosque, Istanbul Cinema Museum, and Galata Tower—just to name a few. Then bed down in the Bosphorus-facing Mandarin Oriental in Kurucesme, which opened in 2021 with hammams, riverfront restaurants, and a water ferry that will take you anywhere in the city.

Olympic National Park Washington

Olympic National Park, Washington

One of the best stretches of April is National Park Week, when the National Parks Foundation helps operate a week-long series of programs and events aimed at drawing attention to America’s most impressive natural wonders . It kicks off on April 20 with a day of free entry to parks nationwide, so there’s really no better way to celebrate than by planning a trip to Olympic National Park —a site that truly comes alive in April.

Springtime is the best season for wildlife viewing in the park, too, when you can spot bobcats, deer, and elk from the many hiking trails. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a black bear fresh out of hibernation. Grey whales also migrate past Olympic’s coastline in May and April—if you book a stay at the oceanfront Kalaloch Lodge , you might be able to see them directly from the hotel’s beach.

Global Grasshopper – travel inspiration for the road less travelled

Top 20 Amazing Places to Explore in April in the USA

I think April is one of the best months to explore the country to find a bit of early sun and shake off those winter blues. Springtime is also one of the most beautiful times to travel, as this is when the weather gets warmer, and flowers are coming into bloom.

Whether you fancy a balmy city break or a hot beach vacation, here are my favorite spots to explore this month…

1. Naples, Florida

Naples, Florida - awesome April breaks

I think this place is just so dreamy! Located along the Gulf of Mexico, Naples is ideally situated to laze on the beach, escape to the Everglades or Ten Thousand Islands wilderness, or watch the Chubb Classic, one of the PGA events this month.

This month’s weather is warming up (around 20 degrees), but it has not hit the extremes of summer. With low rainfall and accommodation rates off-peak, so in my opinion it’s a great time to visit!

In addition to tranquil white beaches and adventures in the adjoining nature preserves, there is excellent shopping and dining.

Naples is easily accessible from Miami along the famous Tamiami Trail. I also love that it’s a quieter and more laid-back place to stay after the craziness of Miami!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1010 Sixth Ave. S. Naples, FL 34102, Phone: (239) 262-7300
  • Average temperatures – 18 degrees

My favorite highlights…

  • Going on a kayaking eco-tour and exploring the beautiful coastal mangrove forests.
  • Relaxing on the stunning white sand at Vanderbilt Beach before catching a breathtaking sunset.
  • Visiting the Naples Botanical Gardens home to over 170 acres of preservation land and cultivated gardens.

2. Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country Photo

The Texas Hill Country, just west of Austin, with its dramatic limestone and granite hills, is a scenic destination at any time of year.

Still, late March and this month are my personal must-go times, as this is when the area comes alive with carpets of wildflowers, especially Texas’ State flower, the bluebonnet, primroses, and Indian paintbrush.

I recommend exploring the region’s unique food. The food has a strong German heritage and Spanish influences, also seen in the architecture and local music. It’s also a key wine region, with over 80 wineries.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 160 Ingram Hills Rd, Ingram, TX 78025, Phone: +1 830-367-2151
  • Average temperatures – 15 to 26 degrees

My personal highlights…

  • Hiking to the Hamilton Pool and enjoying a picnic by the natural spring pool before taking a dip.
  • Cycling along the Willow City Loop whilst admiring the picturesque countryside and bluebonnet fields.
  • Walking the Texas Wine and Wildflower Trail and enjoying a complimentary tasting!

3. Santa Catalina Island, California

Santa Catalina Island, California

Part of the Channel Islands of California (22 miles off Southern California), I honestly believe this gorgeous spot is one of the best islands to visit in spring.

For starters, there’s the stunning island scenery before the summer crowds arrive, and this time of year has a much more relaxed atmosphere.

The weather averages around 17 degrees in the day, and once there, I would highly recommend just kicking back and waiting for island life to take hold!

It’s a rocky but very scenic island with white sand beaches, palm trees, a cute harbor filled with gently bobbing boats, and jaw-dropping sunsets. There are also plenty of accommodation options.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1 Green Pleasure Pier, Avalon, CA 90704, Phone: +1 310-510-1520
  • Average temperatures – 17 degrees
  • Experiencing the exhilarating Catalina Zip Line Eco Tour which reaches speed of nearly 40 mph at 600 feet above sea level!
  • Exploring the outback on an open-air four-wheel tour to discover remote areas others don’t usually see.
  • Taking part in a Happy Hour Tour where I tasted award-winning appetizers and speciality drinks.

4. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona Arizona - April vacation ideas

As you would expect of a city in Arizona, the climate can be extreme, so this month is an excellent time to visit as temperatures hover around 25 degrees.

Desert flowers bloom, and the hills resound with spring birdsong, making it a special time for hikers and bikers.

The red sandstone rocks of nearby Red Rock State Park pick up the rays of the rising and setting sun and glow as if they were on fire; my Instagram followers loved it!

The legendary Oak Tree Canyon meanders between Sedona and Flagstaff, and I would suggest adding this popular touring and hiking destination to your itinerary!

I personally have a huge fondness for the town as its favorite artist’s location, some of whom conduct workshops.

I suggest visiting some of the many spas and retreats, where you can restore and revive yourself surrounded by the area’s beauty. To me, staying here is always pure bliss!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Sedona Visitor Information Center, 331 Forest Road, Sedona, AZ, 86336, Phone: 928.282.7722
  • Average temperatures – 21 degrees
  • Hiring an ATV and driving across the scenic West Sedona Canyon outback.
  • Catching a stunning sunrise whilst enjoying a hot air balloon ride overlooking the Red Rocks.
  • Strolling Uptown Sedona to explore the shops, boutiques, and Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.

5. Antelope Valley, California

Antelope Valley, California In America

I’d recommend visiting here for the beautiful California poppies that bloom in spring! Like all wildflowers, it depends on rainfall and temperature, so it isn’t easy to guarantee when they will be displayed.

However, this month is a pretty good bet if you want to see the poppies in Antelope Valley, as they bloom somewhere between March and May .

The state flower is celebrated in a Spring Festival, and in my opinion, the best time to view the miles of brilliant color is mid-morning when the flowers have warmed up and unfolded their petals. I promise you’ll love seeing the colors going on for as long as your eye can see!

I’d also suggest visiting nearby Lancaster City, an interesting place with a rich aviation and space travel history.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 37765 53rd St E, Palmdale, Phone: (661) 361-8254
  • Average temperatures – 23 degrees

My highlights…

  • Walking through the trails of the Poppy Reserve to admire the Instagrammable views of the vibrant wildflowers.
  • Checking out the fun events and rides at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.
  • I learned about history and appreciated local artists’ works at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History .

6. Nā Pali Coast, Hawaii

Na Pali Coast, Hawaii

Hawaii has only two seasons: summer (or Kau, from May to October) and winter (or Hooilo, from November to this month). At this time of year, there is much to see and do, from watching surfing competitions to exploring the dramatic scenery.

I would recommend the awe-inspiring coastline of Nā Pali in northwest Kauai, with views of dramatic razor-sharp mountains and rocky terrain, except for drivers, for the shore is too rugged to contemplate building a road along it.

For the adventurous, I would highly recommend trying the incredible hiking trails and kayaking tours, while there are catamaran and helicopter trips for those who are not so daring. There are also stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and even archaeological sites!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Kikiaʻola Small Boat Harbor, Kekaha, HI 96752, Phone:  +1 808-635-1131
  • Experiencing the 17 miles of the coast from a different perspective by taking a sailing tour.
  • Enjoying the adventure of a lifetime with a helicopter ride overlooking the dramatic cliff.
  • Hiking along the Kalalau Trail to enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean and greenery.

7. Tidal Basin, Washington DC

Best places to visit in the USA in April/Spring

This is a famously beautiful spring break. Head to the Tidal Basin in Washington DC, and you’ll see the pretty blossom trees, which were a gift from Japan in 1912!

The historic trees signal the beginning of spring and have an average peak bloom date that falls in this month. I highly recommend taking a trip to see them as the trees explode into a wonderful sea of light pink and white blossoms.

Around 70% of the cherry blossom trees’ flowers are open around the 4th, but sometimes the bloom peak occurs as late as the 18th of the month. The bloom lasts around 14 days but is well worth seeing, and I suggest taking your camera!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1501 Maine Ave SW, Washington, Phone (202) 479-2426
  • Average temperatures – 19 degrees
  • Enjoying a bike ride along the stunning loop and array of national monuments.
  • Renting a paddleboat and enjoying some time spent relaxing on the calm water.
  • Spending the day at the National Cherry Blossom Festival and seeing live entertainment amongst the flowers.

8. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Grand Teton National Park Springtime USA

A few miles south Of Yellowstone and part of the Rockies, the Teton Range is a majestic range of mountains separated from the plains of Jackson Hole by a dramatic fault. The Snake River meanders through the range and is fed by several of the lakes in the area.

The skiing season closes towards the end of March/beginning of this month. It is too early for the summer crowds, so in my opinion, it’s an excellent time to visit this beautiful place (I would suggest just wrapping up warmly as it’s still very chilly this month!).

A single visit will not do the Park justice, as there are over 300 km of hiking trails to explore and conquer.

The mountains are vast and awe-inspiring, and I love spotting wildlife here, including large herds of bison and other animals living in this unspoilt wilderness.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address (for post only): Grand Teton National Park, P.O. Box 170, Moose, WY 83012-0170, Phone: 307-739-3300
  • Average temperatures – 8 degrees
  • Taking a scenic drive to Signal Mountain and seeing picturesque panoramic views overlooking the park.
  • Discovering the Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point located on the western side of Jenny Lake.
  • Hiking along the trail from String Lake to Leigh Lake (it’s okay for all ages and ability levels).

9. Bisti Badlands, New Mexico

Bisti Badlands New Mexico

I think these rather forbidding plains, with their bizarre rocky outcrops, are a gem in New Mexico .

The fossils here are impressive, and new dinosaur species are still being unearthed. The “Bisti Beast,” for example, was discovered in 1998, a new tyrannosaurus species.

As recently as 2017, the skull of a Parasaurolophus cyrtocristatus, a strange-looking duck-billed dinosaur, was found, only the second of this species!

I personally think that this month is a good crossover time to visit. Between the rigors of winter and the heat of summer, it is comfortable to hike or wander among the rocks.

Temperatures hover around 19 degrees here, so it’s perfect for long hikes.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 3041 E. Main Street, Farmington, Phone: 800-448-1240
  • Average temperatures – 18 degrees
  • Hiking along the Bisti Badlands Trail and discovering the cool Cracked Eggs rock formations.
  • Capturing an Insta-worthy shot of the unique Alien Throne along the Valley of Dreams Loop.
  • Exploring the short Ah-shi-sle-pah Trail and seeing the dramatic hoodoo views.

10. Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs Spring Break

I love this place for sun and hot weather this month, as temperatures reach 31 degrees. It has always been famous as a retreat for showbiz stars, retirees, and snowbirds escaping cold winters.

There is entertainment, spas, and shopping aplenty, as well as many retro-styled hotels and about 100 golf courses. There are lots of other opportunities, especially for outdoor experiences.

The area is well-provided with hiking trails, but I highly recommend going on a fun Jeep adventure and cultural experiences like the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum .

I would also suggest taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which rotates on its short journey to Monte San Jacinto State Park.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Palm Springs Visitor Information Center, 2901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262, Phone: 800-347-7746 | 760-778-8418
  • Average temperatures – 31 degrees
  • Strolling down the city sidewalks to discover the famous Palm Springs Walk of Stars, created in 1992.
  • Checking out the Palm Springs Art Museum, which displays contemporary and modern art and I loved the stunning sculpture garden.
  • Wandering through the Sunnylands and explore 12 acres of beautiful botanic gardens.

11. Port Townsend, Washington

Port Townsend Beach Washington

Located in Jefferson County, around two hours from Seattle , Port Townsend, in my opinion, is a good choice if you’re looking for a relaxed spring break without any crowds.

This month, temperatures average around 14 degrees, so I recommend packing warm clothes before you leave. But it will be worth it!

The city has long trails and beaches, fine restaurants, fantastic art and cultural experiences, and a fascinating maritime history.

I personally loved the Point Wilson Lighthouse , The Jefferson Museum of Art and History , and The Fort Worden State Historical Park .

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 2409 Jefferson St, Port Townsend, WA 98368, +1 360-385-2722
  • Average temperatures – 14 degrees
  • Buying fresh, local produce and artisan products from a Farmer’s Market.
  • Indulging in a beer and wine tasting at Port Townsend Vineyards and Port Townsend Brewing.
  • Walking the beautiful čičməhán Trail, where you can find 3-, 6- or 12-mile loops.

12. Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs

Garden of the Gods Colorado

Located just an hour from Denver , Colorado Springs is home to the Garden of the Gods , a significant attraction with scenic sandstone rocks. This month, the snow may not yet have melted on Pikes Peak, which overlooks the Park, adding more impact to the dramatic scenery.

I recommend stopping at the Visitor and Nature Centre, which includes an interactive museum.

Several trails, about 20 km long, are available, including the Perkins Central Garden Trail, which is accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

You can walk, cycle (or Segway), or even take a Jeep ride (my favourite!), and afterwards, I would suggest refreshing yourself in the cafeteria and just taking in the views.

Dogs are also welcome on leads, and there are even some areas where they can walk off-leash. This is also a popular and challenging spot for rock climbing, but permits are required.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1805 N 30th St, Colorado Springs, CO 80904, +1 719-634-6666
  • Going on a fun segway tour and exploring the Garden.
  • Climbing across the surrounding large carved rocks.
  • Stopping by the hip and healthy Bean Sprouts Cafe for a bite to eat after my adventures.

13. Miami, Florida

Miami - awesome places to go in April

Miami is the world’s playground, with something for everyone, from nature lovers and golfers to compulsive shoppers and nightclubgoers.

It is always hot and humid, but this is a great time to visit because it’s cooler, there is less rainfall, and temperatures can reach around 26 degrees.

I love that its proximity to Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean gives it a tropical and exotic flavor quite different from that of much of the country.

I recommend celebrity spotting around South Beach (or in their hideouts in Coral Gables) and exploring the Everglades or the other preserves, like Big Cypress.

South Beach is also a must-visit for Art Deco fans, and I also suggest visiting quieter beaches such as Bal Harbour or North Beach.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 701 Brickell Ave., Suite 2700, Miami, FL 33131, Phone: (305) 539-3000
  • Average temperatures – 26 degrees
  • Taking a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter ride overlooking the breathtaking Miami skyline.
  • Spending the day at Sunny Isles Beach and enjoy some swimming, diving, and water sports in the cooling waters.
  • Going on a tour of Miami’s most well-known film set locations.

14. Flint Hills, Kansas

Flint Hills, Kansas USA

This is a special place to visit as grasslands are shrinking worldwide, mainly because they provide excellent land for cultivation.

The prairies of North America and the life they support are steadily being restored and protected but have mainly been converted to farmland.

Spring brings warmer weather, rain, and sunshine, so in my opinion, it’s a vibrant and verdant time to visit. Elks are now extinct in the area, but the bison herds are starting to come back.

I highly recommend standing on the slopes and gazing at the grasslands, which have looked exactly like this for thousands of years and are still home to birds and animals that thrive in the prairie!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 315 S 3rd St, Manhattan 66502, Phone: +1 785-587-2726
  • Taking a free bus tour of Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and learning about the culture whilst admiring the gorgeous scenery.
  • Appreciating paintings from famous artists Judith and Ken Mackey Flint Hills Gallery.
  • Enjoying a road trip through the National Scenic Byway, which is 48 miles long and is home to many historical sites and quaint towns.

15. San Diego, California

San Diego Spring Break

I personally think this month is a great time to visit San Diego as it’s much less crowded, there is still plenty of sun, and temperatures hover around 20 degrees.

Most people flock to “Beach City” for family fun on the beaches. Mission Beach is a good swimming beach, with a boardwalk and rollercoaster, but I recommend checking out the tidal pools at La Jolla, when the tide is low, and snorkeling at La Jolla Cove, part of the Underwater Park.

If you’ve had too much sun, I would suggest heading for Balboa Park, where you would need at least a week to explore, taking in the 18 diverse museums or some cultural events. The Air and Space Museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian and has something for kids of all ages.

I would suggest tasting some Baja cuisine, dancing the night away in one of the nightclubs, or viewing one of the many shows on offer.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 996 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, Phone: (619) 236-1242
  • Average temperatures – 20 degrees
  • Having fun at Belmont Park is filled with exciting rides and adrenaline-pumping rollercoasters.
  • Catching one of San Diego’s best sunsets at La Jolla Cove, a perfect spot for Instagrammable shots.
  • Exploring the vibrant nightlife scene at Gaslamp Quarter, filled with bars, lounges, and music venues.

16. Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

Nantucket was once a thriving whaling center. Even though the population today is only 11,000, it can swell into 50,000 during peak tourist season, so in my opinion, the shoulder months are an excellent time to visit.

Nantucket is reached by ferry from Cape Cod, a 30-mile trip. I suggest visiting this month because it is off-peak, accommodation prices are more affordable, and it is also during the daffodil season.

The flowers are growing everywhere, and the locals go daffodil-crazy for the whole month, which includes car parades, picnics, and daffodil dress-up competitions.

I would recommend visiting the Whaling Museum (although thankfully, most people are against the cruelty of catching whales now!) and walking, cycling, or even catching a bus to view the historic buildings dotted around the island. There are also guided tours.

If you have children with you, there are plenty of family-friendly activities for them, from beaches to boat rides.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Nantucket Department of Culture & Tourism. 25 Federal Street, Nantucket, MA 02554, Phone: 508-228-0925 Fax: 508-325-5443
  • Average temperatures – 13 degrees
  • Renting a bike and exploring the island’s 35 miles of multi-use paths.
  • Visiting the three historic lighthouses – Sankaty Head Light, Brant Point Light, and Great Point Light.
  • Spending the afternoon shopping downtown, home to many cute boutiques and independent stores.

17. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach spring time vacation

Myrtle Beach is a small but fast-growing city on the South Carolina coast that attracts around 20 million tourists a year. It offers a warm climate and welcoming beaches.

In my opinion, this month is a great time to visit, as it is a bit quieter than March when Ontarians flock to Myrtle Beach to escape their weather.

It is also when the “Coastal Uncorked” festival of food and drink is held, and I would highly recommend timing your visit for then (it’s towards the end of the month).

The resort has 80 golf courses on offer, as well as nightclubs, theatres, and concerts. However, the warmth and the long sandy beaches bring most tourists to Myrtle Beach again and again!

I love the Boardwalk, and it’s one of the best in the country. It’s great for a stroll along the coastline, or if you need a rest, hop on the SkyWheel and view the beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.

There is also a water park and an amusement park for the kids, which is a bonus!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1200 N Oak St, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577, Phone: +1 843-626-7444
  • Average temperatures – 22 degrees
  • Checking out the Hollywood Wax Museum and posing with some of my favorite A-listers.
  • Enjoying a stroll along the boardwalk that is 1.2 miles long and filled with fun attractions, rides, shops, and restaurants.
  • Going on a thrill-seeking adventure in the five-acre forest treetops at the Radical Ropes Adventure Park.

18. Caddo Lake, Texas and Louisiana

Caddo Lake Louisiana and Texas

This beauty spot is located in Texas and Louisiana; in my opinion, it’s one of the region’s best-kept secrets.

Attracting families, couples, nature lovers, and wildlife watchers, plenty of vacation accommodation rentals exist, including camping spots, cabins, bed and breakfasts, and some nearby hotels.

In Caddo Lake State Park, you can swim hike, picnic, camp, or stay in a cabin, look for a geocache, but I highly recommend boating.

However, be warned—alligators live in the park. Read up on the area’s alligator safety tips before your visit!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 245 Park Road 2, Karnack, Phone: (903) 679-3351
  • Average temperatures – 24 degrees
  • Renting a kayak and exploring the water trails to discover the unique landscape.
  • Taking an early morning boat tour and watching a romantic sunrise or sunset over the lake.
  • Camping overnight at a beautiful shore-side campsite.

19. Blue Ridge Parkway National Park, North Carolina

Blue Ridge Parkway in April

If you are planning a springtime road trip, I suggest that you include this spot—all 755 kilometers of it—on your list, as it takes you through scenic areas of North Carolina and Virginia.

The parkway is closed during winter but opens in spring again. Despite the closure, it has been one of the country’s most-visited parks since 1946.

There are attractions en route, and I recommend stopping at the visitor centre, but in my opinion, what makes the Parkway unique and special is its fantastic biodiversity.

Whether it is the 4000 species of plants, over 250 bird species, or the chance of spotting black bears ambling along, this is a nature watcher’s hotspot!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 195 Hemphill Knob Rd, Asheville, NC 28803, Phone:+1 828-298-5330
  • Hiking the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway Waterfalls via a park trail.
  • Taking a trip to one of the local vineyards and experiencing world-class wine tasting.
  • Visiting the Blue Ridge Music Center, which hosts several music events at its outdoor concert venue.

20. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor in Maine

Although temperatures aren’t the warmest (average temperatures hover around 12 degrees in the day) I personally think there are many reasons to visit Bar Harbour, a town on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay in Maine this time of year.

For starters, you’ll get good deals on accommodation as it falls before the summer peak season, and you’ll also arrive before the crowds arrive.

I’m a huge fan of this place. I love that the scenery is quaint and beautiful, with gorgeous coastal beauty. I love the bobbing yachts and boats, the incredible ocean, the neighbouring island views, and the atmospheric weather, which ranges from sparkling sunlight to thick fog and mist.

I think Bar Harbor is a relaxing destination, as well as being the gateway to the mountains and the rugged scenery of nearby Acadia National Park.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 2 Cottage St, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, Phone: +1 207-288-5103
  • Average temperatures – 12 degrees

My favourite highlights…

  • Hopping on Oli’s Trolley to explore Bar Harbor with a narrated tour.
  • Grabbing food at Geddy’s on the main street and admiring the view overlooking Frenchman Bay.
  • Discovering the stunning landscape along the coastline via an e-bike rental at Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop.

Best places to travel in April

Costa Rica

1.  Costa Rica

Sun worshippers, get your buns to Costa Rica. April is the hottest month of the year here, with temperatures hovering in the late 30s (centigrade), and there isn’t much in the way of rain to break the cycle. That makes it the perfect time to explore the beaches before finding shade in the enchanting old towns, before the onset of wetter weather in May and June. Don’t forget the sun cream, whatever you do.

Lake Tahoe, USA

2.  Lake Tahoe, USA

April is the perfect middle-ground month for visiting Lake Tahoe. Fewer visitors, longer days, the same old beauty. What’s not to like? Lake Tahoe is peeking out of its burrow once spring comes around, and there is something truly magical about being one of the first on the scene. A decent amount of snow remains, so skiing is still an option, although rising temperatures allow for charming walks and all the rest.

Beirut, Lebanon

3.  Beirut, Lebanon

Once known as the ‘Paris of the East’ but then devastated through years of civil strife, the Lebanese capital of Beirut has had a tumultuous few years but remains loved by locals and tourists alike for being one of the most vibrant, cosmopolitan and liberal cities in the  Middle East . April is a fabulous time to get out on foot—stroll the Corniche, or meander around Byblos just to the north.

Japan

4.  Japan

Yes, April is easily the most popular time to visit Japan – but there’s a very, very good reason for that. Cherry blossom – or sakura , in Japanese – sweeps up the country from mid-March all the way through to May, cloaking the nation in a dusting of ridiculously pretty pink ‘n’ white petals. The season kicks off in the warmer south (Fukuoka, Kyushu and the like), before working its way north through Kansai, Kanto, Tohoku and finally Hokkaido. Hunting the blossom northwards is a great way to see the length of Japan – and now the country is finally fully reopened, there’s nothing to stop you!

Belize

5.  Belize

Belize may not have much landmass, but what it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality. It has its very own barrier reef (second only in size to  Australia ’s more famous one), which is where you’ll find the iconic Great Blue Hole. Inland await ancient Mayan ruins, and it is all pleasantly balmy in April.

Porto

6.  Porto

Ah, Porto. Land of steep hills, the beautifully tiled Sao Bento station, and a city centre packed to the rafters with quaint and colourful houses (which are Unesco protected). But what is the city most known for? Port, of course! And April is the time to pay a visit to where all that glorious stuff is produced. Head to Porto for a weekend and make sure to book a trip into the absolutely dazzling Douro Valley to learn all about how the ruby, tawny and white ports are made. And if the sun comes out while you’re back in town, grab a port-tonic from one of the many, many roof terrace bars.

🍷Discover the best things to do in Porto

North Macedonia

7.  North Macedonia

The ‘undiscovered’ tag attached to the Balkans is a misnomer (the summer crowds in Sarajevo, Belgrade, and the rest are proof of that), but North Macedonia remains bizarrely off the radar of most travellers. Head here in April to find your new favourite place, from the consul architecture of Bitola to the mountain beauty and monuments of Kruševo, via shimmering Lake Ohrid, kitschy capital Skopje and more. The mosque in Tetovo might be the most beautiful in the entire region.

Hawaii, USA

8.  Hawaii, USA

Hawaii enjoys beautiful weather and comfortable temperatures year-round, with temperatures reliably staying above 26C/79F and below 31C/88F. April, however, is a particularly pleasant time to visit, slipping in between the spring and summer vacation seasons. The entire Hawaiian archipelago comprises over 100 islands, and the top draws include  Maui ,  Oahu  and  Kauai .

🌺Discover the best  things to do in Hawaii

Stockholm, Sweden

9.  Stockholm, Sweden

This ridiculously stylish  Swedish  city, spread across numerous islands linked by over 50 bridges, is a delight to visit in April: temperatures are still chilly (7C/44F, so dress warmly), but days are often bright and sunny, and by the end of the month have doubled in length (8 hours of light) compared to the start of  March . Other than the views of the city itself, top attractions include the Nobel Museum and Storkyrkan Cathedral, a 13th-century masterpiece.

Venice, Italy

10.  Venice, Italy

Venice, Venice, Venice. What else is there to say about arguably Europe’s most popular tourist destination? The famous city can get a little claustrophobic in summer, but spring is a surprisingly accessible time for this place. Sure, there are still plenty of people, but the air is a little thinner and the streets a little quieter, making it easier to find a way under the skin of Venice and into its poetic soul. Prices are a little lower too, which is never bad here.

San Diego, USA

11.  San Diego, USA

With temperatures practically guaranteed to idle around the 20C/68F mark (combined with plenty of sunshine), San Diego is a fine choice for April. Sandwiched quietly between the busyness of spring breaks and summer tourist season, the best things to see and do—like Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo and the USS Midway Museum—can be experienced in relative tranquillity.

Spain

12.  Spain

Spain encompasses a vast region and topography, so the April climate will depend on where you go, but generally speaking, coastal areas—which include the Catalonian capital of  Barcelona —are balmy, enjoying temperatures of around 20C/68F (brave travellers can enjoy sea-swimming). Further south, the beautiful Andalusia region is even warmer, though still comfortable enough to explore on foot its pretty villages, like Frigiliana, before the stifling heat of summer arrives.

Washington D.C., USA

13.  Washington D.C., USA

While Japan ’s cherry blossom season seems to grab most of the world’s attention, Washington D.C. has a pretty good one too, which typically spans late March into early April. The best place to see it is the Tidal Basin, where over 3,000 trees transform into radiant blooms. The weather can be slightly unpredictable at this time of year, swinging between cold rainy days and warm sunny ones, so keep an eye on the forecast before you jet off.

The 10 best places to travel in April

best places to travel in april

Many of the best places to travel in April are in the US, making for some cheap and convenient getaways.

The most exciting event happening this April is the total solar eclipse . There’s nowhere better to see it than the US east coast. Across the rest of the country, April is alive with music festivals , nowhere more so than the legendary Coachella.

Further afield, food, comedy, and nationwide water fights dominate the calendar, from Brittany to Bangkok. Here are my favorite places to visit in April in the US and abroad.

A lush garden of neatly trimmed trees in the centre of a city square surrounded by classical buildings and a neo-Gothic 17th-century church.

The 10 best April destinations

  • New York State
  • Islamorada, Florida
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Coachella, California
  • Paimpol, France
  • Melbourne, Australia
  • Bangkok, Thailand
  • San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
  • The Nile, Egypt

Best places to travel in April in the US

Spring festivals, music, art, and the magic of longer, warmer days—not to mention a total solar eclipse. The best places to visit in April in the US are spread coast to coast, top to bottom and there’s something for everyone.

1. New York State

The jaw-dropping spectacular Horseshoe Falls cascade into the cliffs with a red tourist boat traversing the gushing river.

  • Learn more: New York travel guide
  • Why visit in April? See the total solar eclipse in all its cosmic glory.

The State of New York is going all out to celebrate the total solar eclipse , happening on April 8th. Partnering with NASA, it will host a series of free state-wide events along the 124-mile path of the totality. Expect a festival atmosphere at locations like the Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory and Rochester Museum and Science Center .

There are many epic viewing sites to choose from. In the southwest, make it one to remember amid the lakes, mountains and vineyards of Chautauqua-Allegheny . The clean air and clear skies of Finger Lakes and the mighty Adirondacks also offer front-row seats amid majestic surroundings.

My choice will be Niagara Falls , which will see the eclipse start at 2:04 pm. Full totality will start at 3:18 pm and last for three minutes and 31 seconds of spooky magic. Finishing at 4:31 pm, you’ll have to wait 20 years for the next one. It will make quite the backdrop for this extraordinary celestial event .

2. Islamorada, Florida

A beach resort with oddly-shaped swimming pools facing a white beach with piers across the sea.

  • Learn more: Islamorada travel guide
  • Why visit in April? Three words: Key Lime Pie.

A midpoint on the string of the Florida Keys, seven square miles and six islands make up the curio of Islamorada. For less-informed travelers, this village is little more than a stop-off en route to the mania of Key West . Stop and look around though and you’ll discover there’s much more to it than the Overseas Highway.

Nature lovers can dip a toe or entire body in at Alligator Reef and snorkel with an unfathomable variety of fish. If you prefer your fish on a line, you’ll find some of the world’s best deep-sea fishing right offshore. On land, Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park is a tropical island forest of extraordinary hardwood hammock trees.

From high-end Caribbean Pierre’s to perhaps the nation’s best Key Lime Pie at Blonde Giraffe , food options are plentiful. As you’re in the Conch Republic, dinner really should be conch chowder or fritters. Few do it better than Lorelei , with gorgeous waterfront views to aid digestion.

3. Dallas, Texas

  • Why visit in April? To get your art on.

April is Art Month in Dallas. The city goes mad for all things cultural with a focus on the cultural diversity of its local artists. Hundreds of fairs, events, exhibitions, and performances transform the Downtown Arts District into a canvas of festivals.

Getting things started is the Dallas Art Fair from April 4th to 7th . Held at the Fashion Industry Gallery, it’s a showcase of modern and contemporary exhibitions. The free Dallas Arts District Block Party is a family-friendly carnival with performers, musicians, and street theater. Keep the arts theme going at the Crow Museum of Asian Art and Nasher Sculpture Center , with free entry on Saturday 6th.

Rounding the month off into May is the Dallas International Film Festival , kicking off on April 26th. Spread across the city’s many historic cinemas, it holds awards and screenings from over 60 countries.

4. Nashville, Tennessee

  • Why visit in April? Immerse yourself in music at Tin Pan South.

Home of country music, Nashville dances to its own beat year-round. Spend your days at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and pay tribute to the Man in Black at the Johnny Cash Museum . As the sun sets, tour the honky tonks of Robert’s Western World and Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Round things off in style at the beating heart of country music, Grand Ole Opry .

Alongside the mainstays, April brings the 32nd Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival. From the 2nd to the 6th, the world’s greatest songwriters flock to Nashville in the biggest gathering of its kind. Fabulous nightly concerts at iconic venues across the city, from the Commodore Grille to The Vinyl Lounge.

In case that’s not enough music for you, make for the historic RCA Studio B. Birthplace of the ‘Nashville Sound’, Elvis Presley recorded more than 150 tracks here.

5. Coachella, California

Two pals hugging each other in a crowded area.

  • Why visit in April? Dance in the desert at Coachella Festival.

Continuing the music theme, the eyes and ears of the world will be on Coachella in April. Over two weekends of the 12th-14th and 19th-21st the Colorado Desert will throb to an eclectic mix of headline acts. In 2023, Bad Bunny, Blink-182, and Blackpink led the foray—2024 is sure to follow suit with the world’s biggest bands and artists.

Very much the place to see and be seen in April, expect huge crowds, high glamor, and even higher prices. For the complete experience, stay at Ace Hotel and Swim Club in Palm Springs , famed for its Coachella pool parties.

Spend your downtime exploring this hipster city’s gorgeous retro-chic architecture and rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. And when it all gets too much, escape into the wilds of Joshua Tree National Park to find yourself again. See you in the desert!

Best places to travel in April in the rest of the world

Across the rest of the world, April is the best month of the year to visit so many countries, from Australia to Egypt. Warm (but not too hot) weather, crazy celebrations, food festivals, and more make it a magic month to travel.

6. Paimpol, France

View of a port with sailing boats in a sunny day

  • Why visit in April? Gorge on seafood at La Fête de la Coquille Saint-Jacques.

Seafood lovers will flock to France’s picturesque northwest coast in April for a celebration of all things scallop. The communes of Saint-Quay-Portrieux, Erquy and Paimpol around the Bay of Saint-Brieuc are known as the scallop capital of Brittany . And with good reason—offshore lie huge scallop banks served by a flotilla of 238 trawlers.

On the weekend of April 20th and 21st, La Fête de la Coquille Saint-Jacques will take place this year in Paimpol. (Coquille Saint-Jacques being the poetic French name for a scallop.) It kicks off on Saturday morning when the Knights of the Scallop parade through Paimpol’s streets and port. From then on it’s an eatathon of sublime scallop menus washed down with bottomless fine wines—this is France, after all.

Expect the typical festival stalwarts: live music and street entertainment. More interestingly, take a boat to watch the fishermen at work, join a tasting event, and pick up some scallop-shaped jewelry as a memento.

You’ll need to fly into nearby Dinard by Saint-Malo and rent a car to get to Paimpol.

7. Melbourne, Australia

  • Why visit in April? To laugh until it hurts.

April is early fall in Melbourne , when the days are bright but the sun doesn’t swelter. It’s my favorite time to visit. While March is the main events month, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival keeps visitors laughing until April 21st. Held in tens of venues across the city, there’s something for every funny bone from family-friendly to adults only.

There’s no better way to recover from a late night of comedy than to head outdoors. Kickstart your day with a cup of black gold. Melbourne is the coffee capital of Australia and few places roast a better brew than Monk Bodhi Dharma in St Kilda. Sip while you stroll the charming palm-fringed St Kilda Foreshore, reminiscent of Venice Beach with its counter-culture vibe.

For a little more exertion, hop on the metro rail to Lilydale. Rent a bike and cycle the scenic 30-mile loop of the Warburton Rail Trail . Traversing the lovely Yarra River Valley , it passes local villages and bucolic landscapes against a backdrop of the mountainous Yarra Ranges National Park .

8. Bangkok, Thailand

  • Why visit in April? Songkran: the wettest, most fun New Year celebration on earth.

Manic, unfettered, futuristic, ancient, and overwhelming—there are many reasons why Bangkok is one of my favorite metropolises. In April, Thailand’s pulsing capital cranks things up with its unrivaled Songkran New Year celebrations.

Songkran, the water festival, starts on April 13th annually. In 2024 the Thai government has gone wild and instead declared it a month-long festival. In smaller communities, the festival maintains its religious and familial routes. But in Bangkok it’s dominated by three days of drink-fueled, super-soaked mayhem flooding the city streets. It’s a cliche, but the biggest and best water fight is on Khao San Road , the infamous backpacker strip.

Don your bathing costume and flip-flops and arm yourself with your watering-squirting weapon of choice. Be warned: there’s no way to avoid a soaking. On my last visit, I watched a local unload a giant Super-Soaker over a group of unsuspecting police officers. Their response? To dunk him into a huge barrel of ice water.

9. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

A cobblestone street adorned with a vibrant array of colourful buildings.

  • Why visit in April? The perfect light.

As the dry season comes to an end, most visitors make for Mexico’s Riviera Maya and the likes of Tulum . Inland though, there are plenty of equally historic towns and cities to explore. And in April, San Miguel de Allende basks in its UNESCO World Heritage status.

April 2024 starts on Easter Monday with the end of the Semana Santa Easter Processions, Mexico’s most sacred festival. As the celebrations end and the crowds thin, the city’s immaculate colonial architecture shines in beatific light.

Romantic and ancient, there’s an embarrassment of extraordinary sites to explore. The wedding cake towers of Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel ; the nearby Santuario de Atotonilco , Mexico’s Sistine Chapel and an icon for independence.

Perfectly intermixed with all this history, you’ll find a cosmopolitan side to San Miguel de Allende, rare in such towns. Catch rooftop sundowners at La Azotea , fine dine at Áperi, and round out your night with the mezcal menu at La Mezcalería .

10. The Nile, Egypt

Two sailboats traverse the river, passing by the docked boats along the banks.

  • Why visit in April? Last chance to cruise the Luxor.

Follow in the wake of Agatha Christie, minus the murder of course, with a cruise down the Nile in April. With spring in full bloom, long sunny days and balmy evenings on deck are guaranteed. There’s no better time to drift its currents and watch local life unfold against some of the world’s most historic backdrops.

Choose your vessel wisely – sailboats and paddle steamers are most common. A traditional felucca wooden sailboat is a serene, sustainable, and ridiculously romantic way to travel. Your route is via Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, and on to Aswan over five magical days. April is the last chance before the season changes and the mercury rises to uncomfortable levels.

The view from Hotel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf in St. Barts

Thanks to its signature laidback luxury vibes—and thinner crowds this month—the tony island so beloved by the one percent is an ideal destination for an April getaway. For the nautically inclined, especially, there is the added draw of the Voiles de St. Barth regatta, which takes place from April 17-23. For the best vantage point of the racing sailboats, book a table at Rivyera, the new restaurant at the 42-key Hotel Christopher , which also has a spectacular perch for enjoying the sunsets. Savannah, Georgia

where to go in april 2018

April is low season in this history-rich city, which is good news for visitors. Not only is the weather great this time of year in Savannah (think 70s), but there will be far less competition for taking in the sights. On the must-do list? Take a horse drawn carriage ride, shop the boutiques along Broughton Street, and pop into the Telfair Museum of Art, the oldest public art institution in the Southeast. You’ll also want to indulge in Savannah’s standout food scene with stops at the Olde Pink House (for a traditional experience), Bubba Gumbo’s (for fresh shrimp and oysters), and Leopold’s (for ice cream). Stay at the Luxury Collection's Perry Lane Hotel , where the rooms and suites are spacious and the rooftop bar boasts some of the best views in town.

For a getaway that combines nature, adventure, culture, and sumptuous R&R, put St. Lucia on the list. There is something for everyone on the Caribbean island, whether it's hiking the famous Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, exploring the rainforest in search of majestic waterfalls, jungle biking, horseback riding, scuba diving, zip-lining, taking mud baths in the sulphur springs of Soufriere, touring 18th-century plantations, or learning how chocolate is made from bean to bar. Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort set within more than 100 acres of rainforest will arrange all of above, and much more. Or you can also opt to stay on property and luxuriate in its many amenities, might that mean soaking in the views from your cottage's private plunge pool or getting a lavish spa treatment in a rainforest treehouse.

10 Best Places to Visit in April

Head for a solar eclipse experience, jazzy celebration, or underrated tulip destination this april..

  • Copy Link copied

Easter arrived early this year, firing the starting gun for spring by the end of March. Why not try to squeeze in an extra trip this month before the summer rush, making the most of still-affordable shoulder season rates in many destinations.

Whether you want see a solar eclipse stateside or see the world’s most precious rose crop bloom in the unlikeliest of locales—or even catch up on some cherry blossom–watching if you missed it last month—these are the 10 best places to travel this April.

1. Venice, Italy

April is great for: seeing the city celebrating itself

San Marco is more than just the name of Venice’s most famous square and church; it’s the name of the patron saint of the city. San Marco’s feast day, April 25, is also a local public holiday. There will be a boat race between the gondoliers who compete while still punting passengers, and a regatta that runs between the island of Sant’Elena and the Punta della Dogana—for the best views, perch along the Viale Giardini Pubblici.

The festivities don’t end there. On that same April day, Venetians commemorate the tragic love story of Tancredi and the doge’s daughter, as charted in Rossini’s opera. Couples of all sorts exchange bocolo , or a red rosebud—even local children who gift one to their mother.

Pick from the likes of American’s service from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Delta’s connections to New York City’s JFK and Atlanta’s ATL, or a United flight from Newark, New Jersey’s EWR.

2. Prince Edward Island, Canada

April is great for: eclipse-spotting and nostalgic reading

This eastern slice of Canada , its smallest province, is usually considered a summertime destination . But this year, the season kicks off much earlier: On April 8, 2024, it will be the first time a total solar eclipse is visible from major Canadian hubs for five decades. The path of totality, or the regions where that eclipse will be visible to its fullest, will pass over the western reaches of the island, so come to this rugged outpost for the chance to spend a few minutes in total darkness in the middle of the day.

The year 2024 is also the 150th anniversary of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s birth, the PEI-born author behind Anne of Green Gables . Anne’s home, Avonlea, may be a fiction, but it’s based on Cavendish on PEI’s north shore, where you can visit the Anne of Green Gables Museum. Mark this milestone with a visit on Canada Book Day, which is held alongside World Book Day on April 23— all the bookstores on the island will be celebrating the local author that day.

The best option is to connect to Charlottetown Airport (YYG) via Toronto; Air Canada flies to the latter from Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Houston, among other cities.

Cultivating damask roses is a time-honored practice in Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains, where Abdullah Saif al Saqry continues the tradition.

April is great for: waking up and smelling the roses—somewhere new

This Gulf State is renowned for a luxury crop: damask roses. These flowers, highly prized among the world’s perfumers, are grown in one place, mostly: the Al Hajar mountain range. The blooms flourish typically through the end of this month on 90 or so smallholder farms. They transform the landscape, too, turning the arid countryside into a carpet of bright pink blooms.

Beyond the rose harvesting, head to the abandoned village of Wadi Bani Habib for an atmospheric glimpse at the area’s past—and take a snap from Diana’s Point, too. It’s where the late Princess of Wales apparently spent an entire afternoon soaking up the view, a reminder of the country’s close links with the United Kingdom.

How to get to Oman

There are no direct nonstop flights to Oman from the United States, so the best option is flying with one of the carriers that specializes in long-haul connections: Turkish Airlines, via Istanbul, for example, or Emirates.

4. Istanbul, Türkiye

April is great for: seeing the tulip in its original setting

This month, Istanbul takes a leaf—well, more like a petal—out of Amsterdam’s book and celebrates its own extraordinary flower bash: the Tulip Festival, or Lale Festivali in Turkish. It was established barely 20 years ago by the Istanbul authorities, which resolved to reclaim the bulb from its European associations; in fact, tulips were first grown here.

Come this month to wander around the streets of Istanbul, and you’ll see millions of tulips planted in parks, public spaces, and gardens; among the most impressive will be Gülhane Park, Yıldız Park, and Sultanahmet Square. Even better, this is a shoulder season month for the city, before the scorching heat of summertime arrives, so walking around is pleasant. Expect average temperatures to hover in the low 60s during the day (though it gets chillier after dark, so bring a warm coat).

Where to stay: Ciragan Palace Kempinski

Turkish Airlines is determined to rival nearby carriers in the Gulf as a carrier renowned for its far-reaching network—and, as a result, it flies direct nonstop to 13 cities stateside, including Detroit and Boston.

Travel to Mallorca this month for a chance to see boats and bikes.

5. Mallorca, Spain

April is great for: sporting excellence in the middle of the Med

This month, there’s the Palma International Boat Show , which runs from April 25 to 28 and is a chance to rub shoulders with the super-yachting types who are increasingly the island’s main audience—the coastal hub of Andratx is where you’ll find most of them. Expect to see about 600 boats bobbing in the waters here, with the biggest vessels (more than 24 meters long, or about 79 feet) together in a special Superyacht Village.

Mallorca’s also renowned among cyclists as one of the best places to ride, as many pros spend the offseason training on the winding, steep hills of the Tramuntana range. This month is one of the highlights of the biking calendar on the island, the Mallorca 312—named after the 312-kilometer track (about 194 miles) that includes more than 16,000 feet of climbing. The race takes place on Saturday, April 27, and roads around the island are closed for the occasion, so expect a festive vibe wherever you go. The little town of Arta is an ideal place to stay up north and to watch the athletes push themselves to the limit on steep ascents like Puig Major or Col de Feminina.

Where to stay: Castell Son Claret

How to get to Mallorca

The best way to reach the island is via Madrid: Iberia, the national flag carrier, is a One World partner with American Airlines, so has an extensive direct, nonstop network stateside from its hubs.

While San Antonio is best known for the Alamo (hence its nickname, Alamo City) and the River Walk , it has much more to offer.

6. San Antonio, Texas

April is great for: touting Texan culture through the decades

It was in 1891 when San Antonio first celebrated Fiesta , a festival earmarked to champion the arrival of Europeans here 200 years earlier (the city was formally founded a few decades later). Today, it’s evolved into an 11-day bash, running in 2024 from April 18 to 28.

Fiesta is a mammoth undertaking that incorporates the entire city into a program of parades, rodeos, art shows, and concerts. The Texas Cavaliers River Parade is a costumed flotilla inspired by the flower-wreathed barges of Mexico City, and the Battle of Flowers Parade is one of the headliners, an Alamo-commemorating event that’s since evolved into a march that attracts more than half a million people.

This month, San Antonio is also a domestic alternative to Canada’s Maritimes region for eclipse-spotting . It’s the largest U.S. city that’s within the path of totality, but only from the western districts will the blackout be complete (so avoid downtown River Walk and around that area).

Where to stay: Hotel Emma

There are direct, nonstop flights from several cities: Try JetBlue from JFK, Delta and America from Los Angeles’ LAX, or Delta from Salt Lake City’s SLC. Southwest has multiple routes in operation, including from St. Louis, Phoenix, and Las Vegas.

7. St. Kitts and Nevis

April is great for: taking the plunge

Rum-loving globe-trotters may already have this island on their radars , but everyone else should consider this month’s additional incentives to visit St. Kitts and Nevis—which have distinct cultures, despite having ended up together as a sovereign federation in 1983, when Anguilla flounced out of the three-island alignment that had existed in the wake of British colonial rule.

The Cross Channel Swim on April 6 is a chance to swim across the Narrows between them, a strait that’s not only a domestic dividing line but also the boundary between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The 2.5-mile open-water event starts at Oualie Beach on northwest Nevis and finishes on the southeastern tip of St. Kitts at Cockleshell Bay. Since the waters here are so shallow, swimmers can see the seabed for the entire passage, which is teeming with turtles, fish, and rays.

How to get to St. Kitts and Nevis

JetBlue commenced year-round service from JFK late last year, unlocking access to the northeast. There’s also daily service on American Airlines to Miami and service on Delta to Atlanta.

8. New Orleans, Louisiana

April is great for: seeing into the soul of the Crescent City

Two words: Jazz Fest . Sure, New Orleans is a city with a soundtrack year-round, but its love of music has no bounds this month for the 53rd year of what’s officially known as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. It’s hosted here because NOLA is where jazz was born, its mash-up musicianship a reflection of the unique cultural influences in its history, from Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean.

There are a dozen stages with more than 500 performance slots over a week of festivities starting April 25; it usually draws around a half million people to the Crescent City. There are big headliners, of course: The Rolling Stones to Hozier are performing this year, to name two. But what helps give this bash its distinctive appeal is the emphasis on local performers, whose musicality is world-class—indeed, anyone can apply to be selected to perform. Look for brass musicians from local marching bands or keyboard players who usually riff at the back of the bar but can claim the spotlight for a moment or two now.

A relatively affordable option in the heart of the French Quarter that’s carved out of a historic department store—hence the soaring 12-foot ceilings of most rooms—this 254-room property has an outdoor pool for a little R&R in between gigs.

How to get to New Orleans

It cost more than a billion bucks to create New Orleans’ MSY airport in 2019, and it has made transiting here a pleasure at last. The airport is served by countless airlines, including Southwest, Spirit, Delta, and JetBlue.

UNESCO has designated two U.S. cities as a City of Gastronomy—Tucson is one of them.

April is great for: all things agave

Tucson was the first stateside city to become a UNESCO World City of Gastronomy , an accolade that nods to its more than four millennia of food culture that merges the tastes of many different groups, including Native American and modern Mexican.

Come experience one aspect of its food culture via the four-day Agave Heritage Festival this month, running from April 18 to 21. It’s an exploration and celebration of agave, a succulent that flourishes in desert environments like the Sonora. This event celebrates the plant through seminars and tastings—showing visitors that agave makes far more than tequila, which derives from the core of the plant, and other spirits like raicilla . Expect luminaries from the tequila world to stop by, too, as in past years when producers like David Suro-Piñera, the brains behind Siembra Azul, hosted panel discussions.

Where to stay: Hotel Congress

  • Book now: Hotel Congress

Stay at this hotel built in 1919 and experience the city’s history firsthand: The Tap Room here is the first bar that opened in Tucson after Prohibition, and the reason there’s no longer a third floor is thanks to a fire in the 1930s that both wrecked that level and led to the capture of the Dillinger Gang, who was staying there.

How to get to Tucson

Reaching Tucson is easy, with more than a dozen cities connected direct, nonstop: Try Sun Country from Minneapolis, Alaska from Portland, Oregon, and Southwest from San Diego.

April is great for: squeezing in a bonus blossom fest after most blooms finish in March

Vancouver’s cherry blossom fest runs through April 25 this year, offering a chance to stretch out the bloom-peeping for another month, thanks to its northerly latitude. The first 500 cherry trees to be planted here arrived in the 1930s as a gift to the city from the mayors of Kobe and Yokohama in Japan to honor the Japanese Canadians who had fought in the First World War; there’s a formal memorial to them in Stanley Park near rows of blossoming trees. More have arrived since then, and you can view them in various sites around the city: Standout locations include the Nitobe Memorial Garden at UBC Botanical Garden, the SkyTrain Burrard station downtown and, of course, the VanDusen Botanical Garden, with its more than two dozen varieties.

The festival includes various events around town, all nodding to Japan, from sake tasting to taiko drumming and kimono-tying demonstrations, as well as ikebana , or flower-arranging, classes.

This 104-room property downtown opened barely six months ago. It has a lush, art deco–inflected aesthetic across 13 floors—think backlit mirrors and marble-clad bathrooms.

Among several options, Canada’s bargain carrier WestJet connects the city with Nashville and Las Vegas with nonstop, direct flights, while Air Canada has service from Sacramento; Delta runs a flight from its Minneapolis hub.

Best for culture and cherry blossom

Kanazawa's  Kenrokuen Garden is one of the jewels of the city’s dazzling crown. One of the Three Great Gardens of  Japan , it’s been casting an enchanting spell for some two hundred years.

Though spectacular all year round, it’s especially magical when cherry blossom season unfurls in late March/early April. In 2023, Kanazawa’s peak bloom week is predicted to run from 30th March—5th April.

Blossoms aside, Kanazawa boasts several incredible historic districts. These include Higashi Chaya District, where old geisha houses sit centre stage.

Nagamachi District is a must-visit for travellers interested in samurai history. Here you can visit the restored residence of one of Kanazawa’s most influential samurais. Namely, Nomura Denbei Nobusada.

Rolling countryside. Bubbling brooks. Impossibly quaint villages of thatched cottages and traditional tearooms.  The Cotswolds  exude archetypal English charm.

And all the better to visit in spring before peak crowds descend, when the region’s woodlands and gardens are at their most blooming beautiful.

Best for beautiful beaches, Chocolate Hills and unique wildlife

Blessed with paradisiacal beaches and lush forests, Bohol island is part of the  Visayas  — the central island group of the  Philippines .

Here, the dry season runs from December to May, with April presenting the lowest chance of rainfall.

As such, Bohol is one of the best places to visit in April for a tropical break that offers beach-chilling, wildlife-watching and hiking.

Talking of which, this is arguably the best time to walk the trails of Bohol’s iconic Chocolate Hills. At this time of year, the 1000+ mounds of this UNESCO World Heritage Site take on their most chocolate-y hue.

As for that unique wildlife, visit the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary to see the world’s smallest primates in a protected forest.

Meanwhile, the marine life around Panglao Island offers out-of-this-world snorkelling and diving experiences.

Best for art, culture and horsing around

Cordoba  —  Argentina's  second city — is undeniably vibrant. This is partly due to its large student population, and also thanks to its old-meets-new architecture and culture.

The city's well-preserved microcentro boasts a bounty of colonial-era churches, monasteries, and municipal buildings. Meanwhile, the Centro Cultural Córdoba adds modern architectural panache.

Beyond the busy capital, the region of Cordoba is ripe for world-class horse-riding adventures. Visit Estancia Los Potreros  to enjoy exactly that.

Then, for something very different, head to kitsch Villa General Belgrano. The town was founded in the 1940s by survivors of a Nazi battleship that sank off the coast of Argentina. To this day its streets are lined by Alpine-style buildings. Expect sausages, sauerkraut and strudel to loom large on menus.

As for why Cordoba is one of the best places to visit in April — this is a month of low rainfall, with temperatures averaging in the pleasant mid-20s.

Sounds just about perfect for mixing exploring the city with out-of-town adventuring.

Best for one-of-a-kind wildlife and landscapes

Madagascar  — AKA the Great Red Island — is an undeniably majestic destination . Renowned for its astonishing biodiversity, this Indian Ocean island is a bona fide bucket list destination.

Given that this is the start of the dry, cool season that runs until October, Madagascar is one of the best places to visit in April.

To see the island at its most scenic, trek the canyon trail through Isalo National Park. More experienced hikers will want to tackle the Piscine Naturelle Circuit. There's a pretty, palm-fringed pool to cool off in along the way.

Famed for its indri lemurs, spending time in Analamazaotra National Park is essential. In addition, the wider rainforest area hosts the world’s highest concentration of frog species.

If that wasn't enough, it also boasts a significant chameleon population, giant boehmei day geckos, and over 100 species of bird.

Best for flowers and national festivities

Two pillars of quintessentially Dutch culture take place in April, and each is more than enough reason to head to the Netherlands .

Firstly, April marks the last month to enjoy the country’s famed tulip season. Flowers grow in the easily accessible northern regions, where the dull of winter transforms into a vibrant patchwork of rainbow rows.

Secondly, April 27th is King’s Day — Holland’s biggest national event. It also happens to be one of the best free best parties in the world.

Expect concerts, markets, fairs and a sea of orange-clad celebrants flooding Amsterdam ’s scenic sidewalks, spilling out onto the boats bobbing on the canals.

Best for breath-taking vistas and photography

April is (generally) the end of the rainy season in Bolivia . During the rains, the Salar de Uyuni , the world’s biggest salt lake, becomes partly submerged.

Flanked by mountains and smouldering volcanoes, May sees its blistering white plains transformed into a shimmering mirror. The reflection of the peaks and sky is so perfect that the horizon disappears. This leaves the mountains looking like islands floating in the sky.

It's a truly unique experience, and one keen photographers won't want to miss.

The lake is also home to strange and tenacious ecosystems that survive around its arid and salty margins. These include colonies of cacti, rabbit-like viscachas, and flamingos that nest here during the rainy season.

Where is hot in April? Our top 14 destinations

By Laura Chubb

Where is hot in April Our top 14 destinations

Spring is in full bloom, but so too are April showers, dampening Easter plans and keeping UK temperatures cool. Elsewhere in Europe , though, April sees the mercury steadily rise, making it a pleasantly off-peak time to take a classic city break , or explore a chic Mediterranean island without the crowds. Prefer buzz to solitude? Hit up street-shaking carnivals everywhere from South America to the Deep South. Now’s a fine time to find bargains on castaway islands , or maybe take that big trip Down Under, where warm autumn temperatures are forgiving enough for beach breaks, urban exploring and adventures in the wild. So without further adieu, these are the 14 destinations that are hot in April.

Where is hot in Europe in April?

As we settle into spring, there are plenty of European destinations that are considerably warmer than the UK without having to travel too far. Below, we recommend Rome (average temperature 19℃), Santorini (average temperature 19℃) and Capri (average temperature 20℃) as well as Sicily's capital Palermo (average temperature 19℃) and Cyprus (average temperature 21℃).

These are the 14 best and hottest destinations to visit in April and where to stay to make the most of your holiday.

Skyline view of Palermo on a sunny day

Palermo, Sicily

Average April temperature: 19℃

The capital of Sicily has known many eras in its time – and the relics of these past periods are everywhere. The result is a city that genuinely blends cultures, cuisines and architectural styles seamlessly – Baroque churches and Middle Eastern-style buildings jut up against each other in a landscape backed by mountains and fringed by the sea. In April, temperatures have started to rise comfortably – go before the summer crowds flock in a few month's time.

Where to stay in April: Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel, is set on a graceful estate that feels worlds away from frenetic Palermo. See our edit of the best hotels in Sicily for more inspiration.

Average April temperature: 21℃

Clear skies and beautiful beaches make this island – closer to the Middle East than Europe – an evergreen favourite for sunseekers. Families come here for the smart-but-relaxed hotel scene and all-but-promised good weather, while honeymooners love the island for its 160-plus beaches and secluded stays up in the interior mountains.

Where to stay: The best hotels in Cyprus include beachfront Amara , which has a next-level sushi restaurant on-site, and one of the best family holidays in Europe , Almyra .

Rome, Italy

You’ve done Rome , so now for the greater luxury: doing it as the Romans do. Temperate April is a fine time to explore the city as the locals see it, rather than as it’s visited: no dashing from sight to sight, madly ticking boxes, but rather making the most of the walking weather to wander, wonder and get gloriously lost. Around six miles from the Eternal City’s centre, Centocelle is a happening suburb steeped in contemporary Italian cool. Natural wine bar Menabó is a tough reservation to snag, but worth it for roasted octopus and grassy Grechetto. Even in Rome’s more crowded corners, there are delicious secrets hiding in plain sight. On Piazza di Spagna, find metaphysical painter Giorgio De Chirico’s apartment just as he left it in the late 1970s, with cluttered studio and a brilliant arrangement of his canvases and sketches.

Where to stay in April: close to Palazzo Borghese is Hotel Vilòn , a mansion-turned-boutique-hotel on a blink-and-miss-it cobblestoned street.

Cartagena, Colombia

Average April temperature: 31℃

Easter in Colombia is the year’s biggest, most essential celebration, and it swells Cartagena’s streets with feasts and parades. Holy Week – leading up to Easter Sunday – is not the time to visit if you’re crowd-phobic, but to see this sultry city at its most festive, it can’t be beat. Temperatures here are steamy year-round, and the old town has long lost its best-kept-secret tag, so you might as well lean into the heat and the hordes. Plus, it’s still very romantic, with its corn-yellow colonial mansions, flower-filled balconies, clip-clopping horse-drawn carriages and palm-dotted squares. Stir in generous measures of rum cocktails and salsa music, and you’ve got yourself a hell of a holiday, even if it’s not exactly subdued.

Where to stay in April: Stay at Casa San Agustin , the best boutique hotel within the old city walls, so you can take restorative breaks on its sun-drenched rooftop and in its L-shaped pool.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini isn’t the A-lister’s Greek island because of its beaches, many of which are imperfect black-sand or pebble numbers. Nor is it for privacy, given that 15,000 locals share their home with around two million visitors each year. No, Santorini is the darling of fashion photographers, romantics, influencers and bon vivants because it is, quite simply, the Med’s most stunning sight. An inhabited caldera, its chalk-white villages and sea-view suites teeter on steep lava cliffs, skirting an interior of bewitching Aegean blue. The sunsets are so pinch-me perfect, advancing dusk sees Santorini’s hairpin roads clogged with buses, all agitating to catch that peerless shot. Behold the revelation, then, that is April: restaurants and bars newly flung open after a stormy winter, hotel rates pleasingly discounted. It might not be quite sunbathing weather yet, but it is vineyard weather and slurping oysters-in-your-seaside-cabana weather and cocktails-on-your-roof-terrace weather.

Where to stay in April: at Nous , a luxe retreat with unique architecture and design notes that hit a lovely harmony between a remote hideout and a lively base.

Capri, Italy

Average April temperature: 20℃

April is when Capri springs to life again, with enough sunny days to warrant packing a beach bag (though only hardened wild swimmers would dare a dip in the sea). Mid-month, beach clubs start opening up for the season, but there’s plenty to do before the party people dock. Take the chair lift to Monte Solaro for a heart-swelling panorama over the Gulf of Naples ; hire a gozzo fishing boat and explore Capri’s hidden coves and grottoes; go window-shopping for chic villas spilling bougainvillaea; wander the island’s decidedly upmarket, curving streets. And for every see-and-be-seen restaurant and seaside bar, there’s a genuine gem. Da Paolino, with tables set between rows of fragrant trees in a lemon grove, is a favourite with designer Nicky Zimmermann .

Where to stay in April: On a cliffside hovering above Marina Grande, the island's humming harbour, JK Place Capri is a welcome refuge from the tourists congesting the port below.

Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Average April temperature: 25℃

In the 1950s the Bazaruto archipelago, a string of six, immaculate islands off the sleepy shores of mainland Mozambique’s Vilankulo, had a certain reputation. Particularly the Santa Carolina hotel, on one of the smaller islands, where a colourful mix of the rich, renegade and rock ’n’ roll would land on its private airstrip, primed for clandestine revelry (it’s said Bob Dylan composed his song ‘Mozambique’ on the hotel’s baby grand). Decades of civil war spoiled the party, but today Bazaruto is quietly making a comeback, thanks to the splendour of its wild, dune-backed beaches, left for the longest time to themselves. And authentic island life isn’t just for visitors. Bazaruto, in particular, offers a rich, living tapestry of vibrant villages, waving schoolchildren, freshwater lakes, savannah grassland and mangrove swamps.

Where to stay in April: On the island of Benguerra AndBeyond has a bush camp-style hideaway with private plunge pools and cocktails served from a traditional sea-going dhow. On Bazaruto, the largest island, Anantara has a scattering of thatched beach villas and its signature spa.

Average April temperature: 27℃

One of the great pleasures of Mauritius is the culture: a real world of hot curries, temples and tea plantations outside the hotels. And now, one white-sand beach retreat aims to bring these disparate spheres together. SALT of Palmar – an east-coast eco hotel complete with organic food, e-bikes and hip rooftop bar – encourages guests to take part in its Skill Swap programme, matching them to islanders with similar passions so they might bond over regionally nuanced takes on shared skills. Artists might meet local painters and craft cocktail-makers could match with Mauritian mixologists – such as Denis Aristide, a taro farmer who also steers the hotel bar and favours ingredients including ylang ylang essence sourced from a local boutique estate. With cyclone season ending in March and May ushering in winter, April might just be the best time to get to know Mauritius.

New Orleans, USA

Average April temperature: 26℃

New Orleans is so much more than the French Quarter, but it’d be daft to come here in April and miss the Easter parades. As flamboyant as Mardi Gras, if somewhat less raucous, several separate processions march their floats and Sunday-best bonnets through the famous neighbourhood, including a truly fabulous Gay Easter Parade. The weather might suit sunny wanders among Garden District antebellum mansions, but save some time for hipster Bywater: Bacchanal’s fairy-lit wine patio is a must. Meanwhile, more contemporary hotels are leaping from strength to strength here.

Where to stay in April: at Peter & Paul : a converted Catholic church and convent in Marigny – the French Quarter’s equally jazz-club-packed, but more boho-artsy, neighbour – it’s a masterclass in design, and the service is trѐs bien.

Perth, Australia

Long out on a limb – Perth is bunched into the corner of Western Australia , separated from the rest of the country by vast swathes of punishing outback terrain – the riverside state capital is now, for the first time, reachable by direct flight. Qantas must’ve clocked the new cultural cachet that’s lately made Australia’s most isolated city a proper rival to capital-in-all-but-name Sydney and cool-kid Melbourne , launching a non-stop from Heathrow in 2019. But you don’t travel 17 hours just for a sunny city break – though Perth is certainly that (it’s palpably pulsing with new energy: slick restaurants showing off Swan River views; blockbuster galleries and street murals; the spanking-new Ritz-Carlton Perth). Wider WA, though, possesses a wilder allure. Ningaloo Reef is just as jaw-to-the-floor ravishing as the Great Barrier, and with far fewer visitors; the Kimberley’s immense gorges and bizarre natural rock sculptures (see: the Bungle Bungles) are about as humbling as landscapes get. Oh, and the beaches. Everything about WA is hot.

Average April temperature: 32℃

Sri Lanka  has had a tough go of things in the past few years – but more recently, the teardrop  island  has had a serious renaissance and is now back on most peoples' bucket lists as a wonderful warm weather destination. Across the island, you'll find astonishing beaches, national parks with jaw-dropping wildlife-spotting opportunities, hill country paddies to explore – as well as some of the best food in this part of Asia and some seriously smart hotels, too.

St Barth’s, Caribbean

Average April temperature: 29℃

The Caribbean ’s chicest island is back in business, after twin hurricanes Irma and Maria wreaked havoc in the region in 2017. And April is the sweet spot for lapping up its revamped boutique suites and beach clubs , with the winter crowds gone and storm season safely some time away (typically kicking in around July ).

Where to stay in April: Two of our favourites, secluded Hotel Le Toiny and Villa Marie Saint-Barth (sister to the glamorous Villa Marie Saint-Tropez), were hit hard by the hurricanes, but have come back better than ever. The former, hidden away on St Barth’s rugged south-east side, has relaunched its beach club, with seafront pool, sunbeds and no end of chilled rosé; the hotel, all whites and creams and petrified wood, has also added eight new rooms, with pools and ocean-view terraces. At the island’s opposite end, Villa Marie – whitewashed, shuttered, with dangling bamboo egg chairs – has been fully restored.

Seville, Spain

This Spanish city is finally getting the recognition it deserves, but spring and autumn are the ultimate times to visit Seville. Temperatures can reach a balmy 25℃, but if you work around school holidays you’ll avoid the hordes of tourists visiting during half term and Easter break. The city is best explored through its food scene – our favourite lunch spot is Mercado de Triana, where Bar La Muralla serves up proper tapas amid bustling locals buying groceries and catching up with friends. For dinner, book a table at El Rinconcillo, a centuries-old restaurant where the waiters will tell you the best things to order (on and off menu). It's slightly cooler than in the summer months, so spend afternoons strolling through the city’s prettiest parks – the Royal Alcázar is the loveliest green spot come spring Where to stay in April: Nobu Seville offers the best of both worlds: a buzzy spot right in the city centre, close to all of Seville’s top restaurants and bars, with a zen rooftop space for relaxing come sundown, plus there’s a plunge pool if the weather is warm enough. Marrakech, Morocco

Average April temperature: 25ºC

Marrakech is beautiful year-round, but the city is truly spectacular come spring. Tourists slowly start coming to the city around this time of year, so come early to make the most of the city. The medina comes alive as the city begins hotting up, with flashes of bright colours from overflowing bags of spices, the distant echoes of prayers and the hustle and bustle of the marketplace – all best enjoyed before the temperatures reach their peak in the summer months.

Where to stay in April: La Mamounia is always a safe bet in Marrakech. Having played host to the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill and Alfred Hitchcock, hours can be whiled away in the hotel’s vast gardens, peaceful pool or rooftop balconies. Here are the 20 best places to visit in April…

The best wildlife experiences in april, 1. farne islands, england.

best places to travel in april

Puffins on the Farne Islands’ coast, Northumberland (Shutterstock)

April sees puffins return en masse to the windswept Farne Islands, a birder’s paradise off the coast of north Northumberland in northern England. Some 43,000 pairs make this their summer home, as its crags and cliffs are overrun with seabirds.

Only a handful of local companies run trips, with boats from Seahouses able to land on Inner Farne from April onwards. Between May and July (after which the puffins start to leave) they also arrive on Staple Island, with hour-long visits letting you join the rangers to scour the rocks for puffins, Arctic terns, guillemots, kittiwakes and shags on foot.

It’s just one reason among many to embrace the gorgeous Northumberland coast. For a longer stay, combine puffin-spotting with walking St Cuthbert’s Way, the 100km pilgrim route that runs from the Scottish Borders to the priory at Lindisfarne, or simply road-trip the fishing villages, medieval ruins and empty beaches of one of the UK’s most beautiful coastal stretches.

2. Northern Norway

best places to travel in april

A Sami woman wearing traditional dress in northern Norway (Shutterstock)

In April, the nomadic Sami reindeer herders of northern Norway begin their annual migration towards the coast in search of fresh pastures and salt licks. For travellers, it’s the wildest of slow adventures.

There are just a few thousand full-time Sami herders still working. For those few who get to join them on tours and ride alongside the semi-wild herd in snowmobile-pulled sleds, it’s a fascinating way to get a glimpse of a life that still exists on the fringes of the modern world.

Days revolve around the herd, which moves at its own pace and to no human schedule. In- between herding duties, you can try your hand at traditional skiing or ice-fishing. At night, you join your Sami host for dinner (think arctic berries and reindeer meat) and sleep in lavvu (tents) under the increasingly bright Arctic sky. It’s slow travel at its most immersive.

3. Slovenia

best places to travel in april

A brown bear roams through the woods of Slovenia (Shutterstock)

Europe’s westernmost brown bear population typically emerges from hibernation in the month of April, bleary-eyed and ravenous. They are at their most active when roaming the ancient beeches of southern Slovenia for food.

Over 500 are said to stalk the densely forested regions of Notranjska, Loski Potok and Kocevska in particular, where, if you’re lucky, you can also spy wolves and lynx. It’s here that you’ll find plenty of bear tours run by local guides, which are typically the safest way of bagging a sighting.

The alternative is to sign up for a day at Slovenian Bears , which has 20 ‘hides’ set up by local photographer Miha Mlakar in the forests of Notranjska. These can be booked from April onwards (until October) and are scattered across eight locations, to increase your chances. Then all that’s left is to wait…

4. Assam, India

best places to travel in april

One-horned rhino spotted in Kaziranga National Park, Assam (Shutterstock)

April is the best time to spot the one-horned rhino of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park. By then the greenery of the monsoon period (July to September) has burnt off, making it easier to spot wildlife.

In addition, the park closes every 30 April, so it’s also your last chance to visit before it reopens again in November. It’s a sight worth seeing.

Only 3,500 one-horned rhino survive in their native grasslands of north-east India and Nepal. Even that small figure represents a remarkable turnaround since the early 20th century, when it shrank to just 200. That the park is home to over a third of those remaining makes it a veritable ark.

If you’re wary of the ethics of elephant safaris, 4WDs are a good option here and cover a larger area, increasing the chances of seeing tigers, elephants, rhino and more. They also include the Burapahar Zone, where on-foot treks in the forest let you stretch your legs.

Larger tours typically combine visits to the famous ‘living root bridges’ of neighbouring Meghalaya state, which have been cultivated over centuries and are well worth the detour, and named one of Wanderlust ‘s 10 wonders of the world .

5. Jutland, Denmark

best places to travel in april

Ribe in Jutland, Denmark (Shutterstock)

Every spring (mid-March to mid-April) and autumn (August to October), Denmark’s southern Jutland witnesses a 400,000-strong starling murmuration so dense that it eclipses the sunset. They call this phenomenon the ‘black sun’.

In spring, the birds return to Scandinavia from the feeding grounds of Western Europe (France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, etc), stopping in the wetlands of the Wadden Sea to fill up on grubs and insects. Their incredible numbers and dazzling acrobatics are to put off predators, such as peregrine falcons, who find it trickier to pick off one bird amid a swarm of thousands.

The best places to see this aerial ballet are the marshlands of Tonder and Ribe. You never know how long the display will last – it depends on how many predators there are – but it’s usually a short window, so an expert guide is advised. You can pick one up at the Wadden Sea Centre ( Vadehavscentret ), who run sunset tours to ‘black sun’ hot spots.

The best cultural destinations for April

6. moriones festival, philippines.

best places to travel in april

A snapshot of the Moriones Festival procession on Marinduque Island, Philippines (Shutterstock)

April celebrates the return of the Moriones Festival to the Philippines, where the towns of Marinduque Island fill with masked locals dressed as Roman soldiers, their plastic armour six-packs glistening in the hot sun.

The festival celebrates the life of Longinus, the Roman soldier who is said to have pierced Christ’s side with a spear during the crucifixion, and who was instantly converted when a splash of blood cured his vision.

Celebrations are, naturally, tied to Easter’s Holy Week. It’s then that Roman legionaries (local farmers and fishermen) march the streets hunting for Longinus, who is repeatedly captured and recaptured before eventually being ‘beheaded’ in a local take on the Passion play on Easter Sunday.

There are few parties at this time – that isn’t the point of this festival, which is more a display of faith. Yet the theatre of it all is compelling and the soldiers’ masks are intricate works of art. Most towns on the island will have their own version, but head to island capital Boac for the biggest stage.

7. Kawasaki, Japan

best places to travel in april

Displays at Kanamara Matsuri, Kawasaki (Shutterstock)

There may be a lot of springtime fertility festivals in April, but little beats seeing a two-metre-high pink phallus being carried aloft through the suburbs of Kawasaki.

Yes, the first Sunday in April sees the return of Kanamara Matsuri, a Japanese festival that combines everything you could want from life: penis lollies and prayers for fertility and prosperity. These days it’s known far and wide as ‘that penis festival’ but the Shinto shrine at its heart is no joke.

For centuries, sex workers would visit it to pray for protection from sexual diseases, as did couples trying for a baby. Even today it’s still attended regularly, although the festival and its parade is now as much a celebration of sexual freedom and the LGBTQ+ community as it is a religious ceremony.

The parade takes place by the Kanayama Shrine around noon, though it’s best to arrive early if you want a good spot. You can always kill time by bagging yourself a phallic-shaped hat or perhaps carving a penis out of a daikon radish. At last, a festival where it pays to be a dick!

8. Harz Mountains, Germany

best places to travel in april

Walpurgisnacht celebrations around a bonfire in the Harz Mountains (Shutterstock)

If you think it’s unfair that there’s only one Halloween per year, then a trip to Germany on the last night of April will lift your broomstick.

Walpurgisnacht is celebrated across northern Europe and Scandinavia, heralding the arrival of spring and the feast day of Saint Walpurga on 1 May, but its pagan roots run deep, especially in the Harz Mountains of Saxony-Anhalt.

Here, its towns still mark the night witches and warlocks were said to gather on Brocken Mountain, and bonfires were lit by fearful peasants to ward them off.

These days, locals are more on the witches’ side, dressing as devils and crones to dance around the fires at the Hexentanzplatz (‘witches’ dance floor’) in Thale, which attracts some 35,000 visitors each year.

Other celebrations can be found in the nearby towns of Goslar and Wernigerode, where the storming of the town hall is one of the more unusual traditions. Live music and plenty of craft and food stalls ensure the festivities continue for a few days, but events rarely top the mischief of that first night.

9. Bangkok, Thailand

best places to travel in april

Revellers soak each other for Songkran, on Silom Road, Bangkok (Shutterstock)

Thai New Year, better known as Songkran , is essentially a three-day water fight that erupts across the country from 13 April. Luckily, it’s the hottest period of the year, which makes it all rather refreshing, and no one – except monks, who are off-limits to water pistols – escapes a drenching.

The water is more than hijinx; it’s a symbolic way for Buddhists to wash off the misfortunes of the previous year. This is a religious holiday after all, and each day sees locals head to the temples to make offerings while the streets erupt around them.

Bangkok is party central at this time. The tourist area of Khao San Road in particular is cordoned off, as it becomes a sniper’s alley of super soakers with EDM blasting from stages. Locals tend to gather around the Silom area.

If you’re craving a more traditional celebration, head to Phra Pradaeng district, on the outskirts of the capital, which holds its festival on the Sunday after Songkran (17 to 19 April). Its Thai Ramen Flag Ceremony witnesses a serene procession of flags and floral floats made by villages around the area. You’ll still end up getting soaked, though.

Everything you need to know about Songkran

10. antigua, guatemala.

best places to travel in april

The colourful sawdust carpet lain during Semana Santa, Antigua (Shutterstock)

April typically sees the return of Semana Santa (Holy Week) to Antigua, Guatemala, and turns the cobbles of this old colonial capital into exquisite art.

It’s easily one of the most vivid takes on Easter in Latin America. Vast carpet murals of multi-coloured sawdust and flowers, known as alfombras , are created by local families as a sign of devotion and laid out on the cobbles, some taking up to 20 hours to create.

It certainly pays to arrive before the parade on Good Friday, when floats depicting the 14 stations of the cross are hoisted aloft by purple-hooded bearers ( cucuruchos ) and joined by crowds in their thousands. They trample the beautiful carpets as they march through the streets, obliterating hours of painstaking work.

The parades continue over the weekend, as the air thickens with incense and families make and remake their ‘carpets’ time and again. Arriving early to wander the pastel-coloured alleys lets you explore these fantastic displays in all their glory, admiring the streets as living, ephemeral art.

The best April destinations for nature lovers

11. lake baikal, russia.

best places to travel in april

Lake Baikal frozen during winter (Shutterstock)

As temperatures in Siberia beginning to slowly climb above supernaturally freezing, April marks the last chance this year to fully experience one of nature’s great frozen wonders: the clear ice of Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest lake.

The lake starts to freeze in November but, given its depth, it only fully freezes by January, by which point it’s so thick that you could drive a car across the ice. It’s also incredibly transparent; objects can be seen frozen in place some 40m below the surface.

Even by the start of April, it’s usually still thick enough to go trekking, ice skating or even dog sledding on the lake, depending on how cold it has been. Gazing down when you do so requires nerve – but you’ll of course be accompanied by an expert guide, who’ll show you how it’s done.

Later in the month the lake will start to melt, but even then you can still see how clear it is. It makes for a magnificent stop, especially if you’re thinking of taking on the Trans-Siberian railway in one of its quieter seasons.

best places to travel in april

The roses of Jebel Akhdar (Shutterstock)

March and April are rose-harvesting season in Oman, when the ‘green mountain’ of Jebel Akhdar, south of Muscat, blushes a vivid pink.

For over a thousand years, its labyrinth of wadis and limestone terraces have been home to bountiful gardens of damask roses, which are boiled in mud ovens to make the country’s famous rosewater.

Guided tours of the mountain villages and farms yields a secret world amid its 2,000m-high crags, with guided walks through its impressive canyons an added bonus.

Visits to the souks of the nearby town of Nizwa, where the dried rose petals are sold (often used to brew a medicinal tea), reveal a bustling cottage industry, while local cooking classes teach you to add a dash of rose flavour to your meal.

13. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

best places to travel in april

The magical mirror effect of Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia (Shutterstock)

Early April is the last chance in the year to catch the incredible mirror effect created by Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats. The rainy season here typically runs from January to late spring, when the hardened salt crust means the overflow water just pools on the surface, creating an incredible reflective sheen.

While there are no guarantees the weather will oblige, this shoulder season sees you escape the bulk of the crowds. It also means that most tours tends to shut down, as only the edges of the salt flats can be visited at this time.

Alternatively, if you go at the end of the month, you’ll likely witness the sun baking the flats into their familiar parched polygons as the Jeeps of visitors return. When the waters recede, you can drive across the flats to high altitude lakes, geysers, volcanoes, hot springs and ‘islands’ scattered in cacti.

A stay in the world’s first salt hotel, Luna Salada Hotel & Spa, lets you stick around for stargazing its clear skies at night, or you can just as easily do day trips from nearby Uyuni or Tupiza.

14. stewart island, new zealand.

best places to travel in april

Stewart Island in the sun (Shutterstock)

While April sees the last twinkling of Aurora Borealis in the northern hemisphere until October, on the other side of the world it’s a whole other matter. Here, ’Southern Lights’ season (best seen: April and September) is just getting started.

Short of joining an Antarctic cruise, the best way to see this cosmic phenomenon is on tiny Stewart Island, off the southernmost tip of New Zealand’s Southlands. Recognised as a Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2019, some 85% of the island is protected as part of Rakiura National Park, and the lack of light pollution makes it perfect for viewings.

Even the main town of Oban has good stargazing spots, but it pays to head out on trails such as the three-day Rakiura Track for pitch dark and a good chance of briefly glimpsing a kiwi bird as dusk settles.

Be sure to check aurora forecasts before setting out. These predict the strength of geomagnetic activity in the area, with anything around KP4 or over meaning you’re likely in for a good show.

15. Greenland

best places to travel in april

Disko Bay during the midnight sun in Greenland (Shutterstock)

From late April, it doesn’t get truly dark in Arctic Greenland for four months. It’s the time of midnight sun, when nights are never blacker than a hazy twilight and the long days let you cram as much in as possible.

By the end of the month, temperatures have warmed a little, which sees giant icebergs calve into the sea of Disko Bay. Cruises launch from Ilulissat, on the west coast, into its partly frozen waters, letting you see these behemoths up close.

Alternatively, make for the lesser seen east, where Tasiilaq, with a population of just a couple of thousand, is the biggest town on the entire east coast. This is the jumping-off point for dog-sledding journeys into some of the wildest lands on the planet. Unforgettable.

The best April destinations for long-term travel

best places to travel in april

The landscape of Nyika National Park (Shutterstock)

Malawi is rather underestimated when it comes to multi-day hiking in Africa, and April, which signals the start of dry season, is a great time to strap on your boots.

Head to Nyika National Park in the north to tackle the Livingstonia Trail, a two-night hike running east from Chelinda to the old Livingstonia Mission. Explore wild montane uplands along game paths where zebra and eland still roam free, overnighting in trail camps with sweeping views over the plains.

Alternatively, a steeper challenge is Mulanje Massif, in the deep south. Its highest summit tops 3,000m, making it the tallest in Central Africa, as you hike up from tea plantations to its rocky limits. A half-dozen trailheads mean you can vary your route between one and six days, with mountain hut stays along the way.

17. Caledonian Canal, Scotland

best places to travel in april

An aerial view of Neptune’s Staircase, Scotland (Shutterstock)

Barge trips along Scotland’s Caledonian Canal begin again at the start of April and usually run until October.

It’s a welcome opportunity to sail glass-like lochs, towering munros and heather-fuelled horizons at your own pace as you inch your way east to west (or vice versa) between Inverness and Fort William.

The route follows the Great Glen Fault, skipping through some of the best-known waters of the Highlands, from the vast Loch Ness to the eight locks of Neptune’s Staircase that lie in the shadow of Ben Nevis.

Stops along the way let you stretch your legs amid scenic wilds, medieval castles and whisky distilleries as you cover a 97km route across three or four days of slow adventure.

18. High Atlas, Morocco

best places to travel in april

Imlil, a small village in the High Atlas, Morocco (Shutterstock)

Morocco’s rocky centre is the stuff of legend, and April’s cool spring weather makes it a great time to tackle its Atlas mountains.

There’s plenty of choice, with the range being divided into three sections (High, Middle and Anti-Atlas), but the wildflowers of the High section in particular are breathtaking at this time.

Here, most travellers head for the achievable slopes of Toubkal (4,167m), in the western High Atlas, where cars from Marrakech to the village of Imlil (one hour) drop you off at the trailhead. The route to the refuge is easy to find, and it’s vital to overnight there in order to adjust to the high altitude.

You’ll need a guide (and crampons) for the Toubkal ascent itself, which usually sets off before dawn the following morning. But there’s alternative (and easier) challenges if you don’t want to tackle the big one. Multi-day treks around Imlil plot a route through old Berber villages, along paths worn down by generations of goatherders. Another world entirely.

19. Lycian Way, Turkey

best places to travel in april

The view over Oludeniz Beach on the Lycian Way, Turkey (Shutterstock)

Given visa fees for UK visitors are no longer a consideration in Turkey from March 2020, what better time to take advantage of an icon: the Lycian Way.

April is the perfect time to walk sections, or all, of its 540km, as the cooler weather (early to mid-20s) makes it far easier going in the steamy south-west.

The route itself closely tracks the Mediterranean coast of the Teke Peninsula from Oludeniz to Geyikbayiri, following old Roman roads and nomadic footpaths through an area that used to be known as Lycia, taking four weeks in total.

Those who don’t have a month’s shoe leather to spare are best advised to tackle sections and use the local minibuses ( dolmus ) to skip the more arduous parts. Along the way, you’ll find coastal pines, ‘ghost towns’, pre-Classical ruins and endless sea views. The perfect spring challenge.

The lost city of Kuelap, in northern Peru (Shutterstock)

Forget the crowds at Machu Picchu. Peru’s greatest lost world isn’t even a product of the Inca. High in the Andes of northern Peru lies the city of Kuelap, built by the Chacapoyas some 500 years before the first stone was even laid on Machu Picchu, and April is a great month to explore its ruins.

This is the shoulder month, which sees even fewer visitors than normal. And while you can take the cable car up from Nuevo Tingo, the more satisfying way to reach it is via its walking trails, of which most hikers take the route following the Utcubamba River out of Tingo. It’s only a half-day’s walk but few bother, so it feels like you’ve got the hills to yourself.

Once at the top, Kuelap’s giant walls hint at just how mighty this ancient citadel was. Not all of it has been uncovered as yet, and the mountain mists only add to the sense of discovery as you wander round houses, narrow corridors, cemeteries and sacrificial areas almost undisturbed.

When is the best time to visit San Francisco?

Margot Seeto

Feb 9, 2024 • 8 min read

best places to travel in april

San Francisco is a city with lots to offer throughout the year © Klaus Vedfelt / Getty Images

San Francisco’s mild weather makes it a consistent year-round attraction, which is a bonus for visitors looking for flexible travel dates.

Our peninsula-shaped city is often covered with a comforting blanket of fog (known affectionately as Karl ), formed by the hot sun evaporating ocean waters that then collide with cold air created from a coastal cold-water current. This is then sucked in through the Golden Gate and pushed by Easterly winds.

First-time summer visitors often end up shivering in shorts and hastily wrapping up in SF sweatshirts acquired at the nearest gift shop. Just in case you were in doubt – summer is not the warmest time to visit. There are vibrant summertime events that still make a visit worthwhile, but sun lovers should wait until late summer or early fall to visit SF for perfectly warm (but not too hot!) sunny days.

That said, there are still distinctive seasons to experience throughout the year, resulting from a combination of nature and our lovely, quirky, diverse SF cultures. Spring blooms, seasonal farmers markets, both wholesome and raunchy street festivals, and migrating whales are just some of what various months have to offer. Here’s how to judge the perfect time for you to visit San Francisco.

March through October is best for building a beach campfire

When you want to balance bar-hopping nightlife and shopping with a little nature downtime, or if you need a family-friendly activity, consider the fact that March through October is Burn Season at Ocean Beach on the westernmost edge of the city.

The 16 fire rings are open from 6am to 9:30pm daily on a first-come-first-served basis, but first, check online for no-burn days due to occurrences like wildfires or Spare the Air days. If the rings are full, ask to share and offer to contribute firewood or snacks. Burn season also includes the summer solstice in June – the longest day when the sun sets after 9pm, giving you time to enjoy a leisurely, brilliantly orange sunset well into the evening.

Wear layers to withstand the wind and BYO firewood, which is available nearby at Safeway on La Playa and Fulton streets, or the 7-Eleven on 46th Ave and Judah St. There are parking spots and bathrooms nearby. For public transport options, take Muni buses 5R or 18, or Muni metro line N Judah.

The farmers' market outside the Ferry Building in San Francisco

March to November is best for farmers markets

California grows much of the country’s produce, and San Francisco’s farmers' markets get the freshest, most peak-season goods since we’re so close to growing regions such as Salinas (“America’s Salad bowl”), Gilroy, San Joaquin Valley and many more.

A handful of farmers markets here only operate roughly March through November, but we’re lucky that the majority of the city’s 20-plus farmers markets open year-round. Still, nothing beats the abundance of produce available during the non-winter months. Get juicy, ruby-red strawberries and cherries during the summer (if you can get in line early enough – competition can be fierce), and tart, citrusy nopales (cactus pads) through fall.

Some favorite farmers markets include Civic Center’s vital Heart of the City Farmers Market, the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market (go on Saturdays, which are Saturdays), the sprawling Outer Sunset Farmers Market and Mercantile  and a new farmers market in the Bayview created by Dragonspunk.

February to May is best for whale-watching

Majestic gray whales, orcas and humpbacks all pass by our state’s coastline during their respective migration seasons. While it’s possible to spot at least one species’ migration year-round, the overlap months for all three species usually runs from February to May.

Since a 1985 international moratorium on whaling, the population has made a healthy comeback. Climate change’s recent warmer ocean temperatures have also driven the increased number of whales closer to SF and, at times, actually into the Bay itself. During peak whale season, you don’t even need binoculars (though, of course, they’re helpful). Some whales get close to shore – and in clusters – so it’s easy to spot them by their blowhole activity, then watch their flippers and long bodies breach and lobtail.

If you want to stay in SF proper, sign up for whale boat tours with San Francisco Whale Tours or Oceanic Society . Or plant yourself at Lands End Lookout . Otherwise, there are tons of whale-watching spots up and down the coast. For places relatively close to the city, consider Point Bonita Lighthouse north in Marin, or go a bit south of SF to Mussel Rock on the Daly City-Pacifica border.

April through October is best for festivals

Our April and October might look and feel similar weather-wise, but the city creates distinctive seasons through the vibrant street festivals offered spring through fall. Whether cold and foggy or sunny and clear, the vibes are always celebratory.

Two highlights of the festival season begin a little early with indie music-filled Noise Pop Festival and SF's famous Chinese New Year Parade in February. Then spring brings the 50-year-old Nihonmachi Street Fair (aka Cherry Blossom Festival) in April in Japantown, which is only one of three Japantowns in the nation. The side block parties along the 12K Bay to Breakers route in May definitely count as their own festival, and film fans can enjoy CAAMFest during AAPI Heritage Month .

June brings the very SF celebration of LGBTIQ+ Pride Month and its highly anticipated parade. The free Stern Grove Festival concert series has a lovely long runtime on Sundays from June through August, and the historic Fillmore Jazz Festival  takes place in July. Major musical headliners pack Outside Lands in August, in addition to having become a huge food and beverage event on its own. BDSM-themed Folsom Street Fair basks in September’s late summer weather.

The free Hardly Strictly Blue Grass rocks Golden Gate Park in late September and early October. SOMA Pilipinas’ UNDSCVRD night market takes over the district a few times a year, including in October.

May is best for mind-blowing super blooms

Even though Karl the Fog helps make the city’s year-round mild weather a draw, there’s still an awakening in the air once the rainy season is over and wildflowers and people alike start to peep their heads out. It’s no joke that April showers bring May flowers.

If the rainy season was particularly heavy, outdoor lovers will be treated to wildflower super blooms seemingly everywhere, from unexpected clusters of richly orange California poppies on freeway medians to what news outlets named the best super bloom of 2023 at Mori Point in Pacifica, just south of SF. The hillsides were flooded with thick carpets of buttery yellow goldfields and white-ended tidy tips. While blooms may peak in late April or early May, plenty of destination-worthy blooms can often remain in the city, and around it, well into June.

People drink beer and wine in a brewery, with an out-of-focus bar and stainless steel beer manufacturing equipment in the background.

Burning Man (usually late August to early September) is the best time to snag a dinner reservation

There is still plenty of counterculture and a deeply creative community in San Francisco. That’s why seemingly half the city clears out during the annual Burning Man festival in Black Rock City, Nevada , during the week leading up to and including Labor Day (the festival’s headquarters are in SF). The rest of San Francisco relishes this time, when going out on a Saturday night is a breeze in certain parts of the city.

SF has been a bit quieter in its post-pandemic state, but restaurant reservations have been ticking up, and it’s still worth checking out places you would usually never consider around this time. You can find parking almost anywhere and snag a normal-time dinner reservation for places that usually seem impossible, like the new California State Bird Provisions , modern Italian American Flour + Water , or Michelin-starred contemporary Korean San Ho Won . Waltz into the belly of the Mission District’s bar scene around 16th and Valencia, or other bar-heavy areas like Hayes Valley.

Late August through mid-October is San Francisco’s true (late) summer

It’s very on-brand that our summer months are actually extra foggy, and August in particular is referred to as “Fogust.” The culmination of hotter summer weather surrounding SF creates intense marine layers that, in turn, create more fog. For fog aficionados, hang out in the southwestern neighborhoods , like the Outer Sunset, to experience the thick of it.

As ocean temperatures get warmer in September, less fog forms, plus hot inland air gets blown toward the coast. Make way for the late summer season, which usually lasts until mid-October. The warm weather and subsequent relaxing vibes are perfect for outdoor activities, whether hiking, a street festival, or just sitting in a park. Visiting SF during our late summer also works out budget-wise, as traveling during fall tends to be cheaper.

December is best for stunning light displays

SF’s winter weather is mild (unsurprisingly), albeit slightly cooler and perhaps a bit rainy compared to the rest of the year. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, the holiday light displays around the city are still a cheerful foil to the early winter darkness. Typical tourist destinations one might normally avoid really deliver with the holiday lights, like  Fisherman’s Wharf and  Pier 39 . Next to their extravagant lights and decorations are also winter outdoor ice rinks that pop up on The Embarcadero and in  Union Square .

City Hall employs 220 LED lighting fixtures that bathe the majestic exterior in red and green during Christmas, plus other year-round light combinations like a rainbow for Pride month in June and blue and gold for Golden State Warriors’ victories. Fancy hotels like the Ritz-Carlton have annual holiday light and decoration extravaganzas, and the Fairmont creates a life-sized gingerbread house . Cruise through some of the city’s ritzier neighborhoods like Pacific Heights for huge, glittering displays.

A bonus to visiting the city during the holidays is SPCA’s annual window displays of puppies and kittens available for adoption at Macy’s Union Square — not a physical light display, but something that will certainly light up your heart.
