The raddest experience on the North Shore! This company completely exceeded any expectations I had for a shark tour!!! I even bought their waterproof hood long sleeve as a souvenir! The crew was absolutely amazing, super fun, safe, and informative. The captain Lono and crew member Forrest were great and totally made the experience better! I saw so many sharks and even captured memories with the go pros you can rent through them. Definitely doing this again with Haleiwa Shark Tours! I Loved It!!!!

My family and I had the best experience on this shark tour! Lono and Forrest took our group out, and were very professional, knowledgeable, and lots of fun. They explained exactly what to expect, and the boat was really nice and a comfortable ride. We saw sharks the entire time, and even the local iwa bird too. Thank you Haleiwa Shark Tours!! Mahalo,

Went with my parents, cousin and auntie; everyone was as equally impressed with how serine the whole thing was! Lono and Erin are extremely informative! They’re a great team who make the whole process feel safe and calm. Definitely would go again!

My daughters and I just did this today! The crew was so nice, knowledgeable and experienced! They helped educate us on the sharks and their importance to the ecosystem. I would highly recommend this tour!! Best around!

I have gained a higher level of respect for the ocean and their home. Sharks are amazing! Boat was beautiful, super clean and the crew made us feel safe and treated to a great experience.

Had a great trip to see at least 10 galapagos sharks! Never felt threatened. Guides were lovely & kind. Husband & three kids enjoyed it as the "best thing we did on vacation!"

What an amazing experience!! Our guides prepared us on the short ride out and we were in the water in no time. We saw lots of beautiful sharks and a barracuda.

Shark Tours on Oahu's North Shore

As the North Shore’s only shark cage diving experience owned and operated by Native Hawaiians, Haleiwa Shark Tours is the most authentic adventure available.

The sacred and culturally significant mano (shark) is a powerful apex predator that we want to share with visitors and locals alike. Hawai‘i is home to approximately 40 different shark species, all which serve as caretakers of the ocean by removing sick, injured, and deceased animals, thus maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

Not only are sharks essential players in healthy marine life populations, but they are also ‘aumākua to many Hawaiians — a family god, a deified ancestor reborn in shark form. There are many beautiful legends in our Hawaiian history of sharks acting as spiritual counselors, protecting family members from drowning, or aiding in food supply for fishing families, and they’re even a central figure in the Hawaiian Islands’ creation story.

Is Shark Cage Diving Ethical?

Prior to these tours, some people may wonder if it is all that ethical to get in a cage and watch sharks. However, the good news is that these tours are completely ethical (we even spoke to a renowned expert on the matter a year ago).

In fact, they are, for the most part, dedicated to conservation efforts and educating people about sharks. Thanks to horror films like Jaws, many people have developed a fear of sharks.

However, these tours help people to get over their fears and learn more about these aquatic animals. The revenue from these tours can also help to employ people who will prevent shark finning and illegal fishing.

Shark cage diving in Oahu

With legal and ethical companies, everything is done to ensure that the environment is not affected and that there won’t be any harm caused to the animals.

In short, shark cage diving in Oahu is ethical and a great way to contribute to the conservation of these marine giants and it is one of the most popular tours on the island!

Types of Sharks in Oahu

When you’re embarking on this unique journey, you’re probably wondering what types of sharks you’re going to see. Hawaii is home to 40 species of sharks, so you’re bound to see some diverse marine life.

In Oahu, the most common shark species you will likely see include the Galapagos, White-tip Reef, Sandbar, Scalloped Hammerhead, and Tiger sharks.

Tiger sharks in Hawaii

Of these, Galapagos and Tiger sharks are the fiercest, and they can grow to 20 feet long and weigh 1,500 pounds.

Cage Shark Diving & Snorkeling FAQs

Is shark cage diving safe.

Shark cage diving is the safest way you can encounter sharks directly in the water. Metal shark cages are designed specific to keep humans in and sharks out!

Is freediving with sharks in Oahu safe?

Freediving with sharks is not as dangerous as you might think. If shark attacks were common (or happened at all) on these tours, these tour companies would not be able to operate.

If you are curious to learn more about the safety measures taken by the professional guides on Oahu shark dives, read my Oahu shark freediving guide !

What type of sharks can you expect to see?

Galapagos sharks most common shark species you’ll see on an Oahu shark tour. In the summertime it can be common to see tiger sharks as well. In addition, you may see sandbar sharks, hammerhead sharks, white tipped reef sharks, and grey reef sharks.

Can you see turtles and whales while shark cage diving?

Yes! Whale sightings are more common in the winter months, but you can see a diversity of marine life year round, including sea turtles, tropical fish, dolphins, amongst others.

Where to Stay on Oahu

🌺 The Kahala : My top choice . This secluded oceanfront resort is tucked away and private yet close to everything Honolulu has to offer.

🐢 Turtle Bay : One of the most iconic resorts on Oahu, situated on Turtle Bay on Oahu’s North Shore.

🌇 Halekulani : A luxurious resort in the heart of Waikiki with breathtaking mountain and ocean views.

🏄🏽‍♀️ Wayfinder Waikiki : A vibrant budget-friendly hotel in Waikiki.

Getting Around Oahu

If you want to experience all Oahu has to offer, you should probably rent a car. You can compare rental prices from various rental companies here , but I usually end up renting from locally-owned Lucky Owl when I’m on Oahu.

If you do rent a car on Oahu, be aware that parking in Waikiki (where most Oahu hotels are located) is very pricey, and many of Oahu’s most beautiful beaches and hiking trails don’t have official parking lots. What’s more, car break in’s are common so never leave anything visible in a parked car.

If you choose not to rent a car, you can explore the island via Uber, bus, or even by foot! Waikiki is very walkable, and you can reach almost anywhere via Uber. Buses will take you to many parts of the island, too!

Another way to experience more difficult to reach places on Oahu without a car is to take an island circle tour . Offered by many local tour companies, these full-day tours include roundtrip transportation around the island with several stops along the way. Browse Oahu island circle tours here .

"Best experience our family has ever had! Even our 8 year old got in the cage. Captain Dave was funny, informative, helpful and played the best music a.k.a baby shark to keep the family smiling as we rolled out into the open ocean. We love sharks and this was such an incredible experience that we will repeat any time we head back to this beautiful island! A shark cage dive and then exploring North Shore was an amazing day! Thank you for letting us have this incredible experience!"

"My group and I (7 people total) had such a wonderful time during our tour! The crew was amazing! And even tho it was little rough seas we were able to enjoy a lot! Lots of sharks and clear water! Crew was very informative about the especies and keeping we all safe! This was my 3rd time doing this tour with Hawaii Shark Encounters and I can't wait to go again!!! Also we were able to see a whale!!! It was definitely the highlight of our day!"

"We went out on the first trip at 7 AM. The two employees were very nice and knowledgeable about the sharks. I felt very safe in the cage. I never wanted to get out of it. It was amazing to see that many large sharks up close. Perfect location to keep driving along the northern coast afterward and see many beaches."

"Even though the water was extremely rough it was an amazing experience. And thanks to the captain and his first mate for keeping an eye on our 5yo while we enjoyed the sharks. They were very professional and had our safety as their first priority at all times!! We would definitely recommend this trip to others even with small kids. If the water wasn't so rough our 5yo would have loved it and our 11yo said it was the best experience yet!!"

"I have to admit I did not know what to expect on our adventure this morning. It was fantastic!!! The crew was great and very nice. We had the "A team" at 7:00 am. The water was great and sharks were everywhere! I will definitely recommend this company to others. We loved it!! We live on the island so when friends come we will send them to you!"

"Our family of four had a great time on this trip. Our Captain David and guide Ephram were both very friendly and taught us a lot about the sharks and waters we were in. We had the 10 AM trip this morning but we're able to head out a little earlier because all three parties showed up early. We felt very safe in the cage and must've saw 40 sharks in the water. Our family would highly recommend this trip for the sharks and the amazing service!"

About the Tour

Each tour leaves Haleiwa Harbor and lasts approximately two hours. Our fleet includes custom made aluminum boats, the 36-foot KAIOU, the 42-foot ABUNAI, the 36-foot ISAO, and the 32-foot ANELA, which include a canopy for shade and cushioned seating for comfort. With your safety in mind, we hold an informative safety briefing at the beginning of each Oahu shark tour, followed by a brief history of the experience. Masks and snorkels are provided, however, you are free to bring your own (fins are not necessary).

The sharks we see range in size from five to fifteen feet, and are often just inches away from the cage and the spectators inside! We travel offshore three to four miles to our cage moored in the beautiful cobalt blue water. The visibility is so good (often 150 feet or more) that you can actually see the sharks come up from the deep.  Often on the way, you may also encounter dolphins, Hawaiian green sea turtles, and magnificent humpback whales (November through May).

Our cage can hold up to eight people comfortably which allows small families to experience their shark dive together. No chumming is necessary as the sharks are attracted to the sound of our motors which they interpret as a crabbing vessel and a potential food source. Guests are encouraged to bring their own underwater cameras for the opportunity to capture the best footage of Hawaiian sharks anywhere. Disposable cameras and a video option are also available for purchase.

The first tour starts at 7 a.m. with the exception of June through August when the first tour departs at 6 a.m. Additional tours occur up to 11 a.m. and, depending on availability, later tours are available. Plan your shark diving Oahu experience with us! Book online today!

Hawaii Shark Diving

Shark diving tour details, about your shark diving tour with hawai'i adventure diving.

Hawaii has long been a favorite destination for Scuba Diving, with its tropical climate, year round diving in warm, clear water and with the abundance of marine life that dwell in the colorful coral reefs, diving here is appealing to everyone.

A photo of snorkelers holding on to a safety rope as a shark passes underneath them.

Pelagic shark dives are different in that all you need is snorkel equipment and you will be snorkeling at the surface of ocean water of deeper depths, where the pelagic sea life dwell.

On a shark snorkeling dive you are likely to encounter sharks, whales during the whale season, dolphin, barracuda, mahi mahi, tuna or any other type of marine life typically known to be “pelagic”. This is an underwater photographer's dream and an item on any adventure seeker's bucket list!

A photo of a male snorkeler swimming underwater along a shark.

Education is an extremely important part of our dive, that's why you will be accompanied by a professionally trained safety diver and shark behaviorist. These highly trained and seasoned professionals are experts in marine life identification and behavior, they will teach you how to safely and comfortably interact with the pelagic sea life, and will also explain conservation efforts in effect and legislation passed to help protect endangered species.

A photo of a male snorkeler swimming underwater along a shark.

You will come away with so much more than just bragging rights to say “I dove with the sharks or whales”! You will gain knowledge and some great photos and videos too!

On the boat trip out to the dive site

Starting at the dock when you board the dive boat and during the 3-mile trip out to dive site, you will be briefed on what to expect from your dive beginning with a safety briefing from your Captain.

Your Divemaster will give you a demonstration of the equipment and will further explain with visual aides, photos and graphics about the nature and identification of the sea life and answer any questions that you may have.

Once at the dive site, the Divemaster will enter the water first, then call the divers in after an evaluation of the site. This is where the real fun begins!

Bringing your waterproof cameras in the water with you

Whether you're using a handheld GoPro, a $150,000 professional underwater setups like our friend, Emmy Award-winning Andy Brandy Casagrande who Hawaii Adventure Diving had the honor of working with on Discovery Channel Shark Week 2014, or even a $20 disposal underwater camera, you may just get the shot of your lifetime!

Cancellations

You'll have 48 hours to cancel prior to the date of your tour. Any cancellations or No Shows within the 48 hours cancellation policy will result in your credit card being charged for the full amount of the tour you have reserved.

You’ll be safe in our shark-proof cage, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be an adrenaline-pumping experience!

shark-diving-oahu -hawaii

Pelagic Shark Dive

There are many beautiful places in Oahu, but for those looking to get their adrenaline pumping there's no better way than a snorkeling adventure with sharks! We'll take you off the North Shore and into clear blue waters where we can find Hawaiiʼs famous pelagic predators. While exploring this area of oceanic life - surrounded by pristine abyss- guests will have access top guidance from an experienced safety diver who knows all about what kinds Manō (Hawaii for Shark) inhabit these depths as well as how they behave when faced with potential prey or danger!

Sharks. They are such incredible and fascinating creatures. These underwater beasts have captivated us for as long as humans have walked the earth. We find them so intriguing and alluring that sharks have even been the focus of several Holly Wood blockbuster films.

So it is easy to understand why some people would want to get close to them (in a safe environment of course).

Diving and Swimming With Sharks on Oahu

Sharks are not what most people expect them to be. In movies and on TV we always see sharks portrayed as these cold-blooded killing machines that want nothing more than to tear you apart.

But nothing could be farther from the truth. In most settings, sharks are actually very peaceful creatures and an important part of our ecosystem. They have gotten quite the bad rap over the last several decades.

The truth is, sharks really aren’t interested in attacking humans. They are more interested in eating seals and fish, which is so important for the health of our oceans. Sharks help to keep the fish population under control.

The shark population is dwindling dramatically. If sharks were to go extinct it would devastate the ecosystem. And not just of the ocean but for the entire world. Fish and other marine life would explode in numbers with nothing to keep them in check.

While shark diving on Oahu you will learn more about the importance of these predators and what their role is in our ecosystem. You will learn much about how sharks live and coexist with other marine life around Oahu.

What to Expect on Your Oahu Shark Diving Tour

Not sure what you can expect while on your shark diving tour?

There are plenty of guided tours for shark cage diving on Oahu, but we want to give you the experience of getting to swim freely among these magnificent creatures. As we have said before, sharks are very misunderstood.

On our tour, you will learn more about sharks, the waters here around the island, and how sharks thrive in the ecosystem. Our incredible guide will talk more about sharks including what types of species of sharks you can expect to see.

There are several different species that live in the ocean near our island including Galapagos, Sandbar, White-tip Reef, Tiger, and (arguably the most interesting to see) the Scalloped Hammerhead.

Our experienced guide will talk more about these species and some of the differences between them. Then you will get to swim with sharks in Oahu’s waters. Our guide will explain all of the necessary precautions and guidelines that you will need to follow before getting into the water.

All of our tours are subject to change as we continue to update and change our tours to ensure that you get the best possible experience. If you want to see everything that is included take a look at our current Oahu shark diving tour package .

Frequently Asked Questions

Shark cage tours are located on the North Shore of Oahu in Haleiwa Harbor. Tours run throughout the day, and the morning tours have the calmest ocean conditions. You’ll check in at the kiosk and from there you’ll take the boat a few miles off shore to where the sharks are. The crew sets up the cage and the first group will hop in the cage and you’ll have 20 minutes of shark time. You’ll be provided snorkel gear and thorough safety instructions. Common sharks that you will encounter are galapagos, reef and tiger sharks. During the winter months, you can see humpback whales as well.

Yes! Although sharks can seem scary, once you’re in the water and looking at these creatures up close you’ll see how extraordinary they are. Before your dive, you will be educated on how to properly enter and exit the cage, the signaling systems used during the dive, and what to do in case of an emergency. It’s important to pay close attention during the safety briefing to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for yourself and others.

Shark dives can be enjoyed throughout the year. The most popular months are from May-September. During the winter months, the diving conditions vary due to the sea swell. Early morning dives are recommended.  The sea swell and visibility play crucial roles in the overall experience and safety of shark cage diving. Rough sea conditions and poor visibility may hinder the ability to observe or interact with the sharks effectively. If the tour is cancelled you will have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund.

Absolutely, there is an optional ride along you can select during the booking process.

Yes, cage tours have a 3 or 5 year minimum age and cageless shark dive tours have a 12 year minimum age requirement.
