The town itself has a quaint provincial charm and is distinguished by its 12m replica of the Eiffel Tower at one of the roundabout intersections leading into town. Apparently the unusual monument was built by a previous mayor who had studied in Paris in his earlier years and was built as a testament of his love for the "City of Lights".

This pristine section of water in North Sulawesi is home to many unique sea animals which include the pygmy seahorse, mimic octopus, ghost pipefish, as well as other larger species. It is a fantastic dive area for underwater photographers and the diversity of smaller creatures ensures many memorable photo opportunities. There are several undeveloped beaches on the shoreline of Lembeh Strait which are excellent for swimming and snorkeling.

The Bitung region is famous for its spices. All around the city vendors sell spices such as cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger. Souvenirs such as figurines manufactured out of cloves are also available in souvenir shops scattered across the city.

Bitung is the busy port for Manado on the island of Sulawesi. Like other Indonesian ports, it’s interesting just to see what sorts of ships turn up in the port. The narrow strait between Bitung and the island of Lembeh is famous for its colorful sea life, particularly smaller species such as nudibranchs, miniature seahorses and so forth. Manado has ample evidence of its Dutch colonial history, but many visitors are drawn to the remarkable nature preserves such as Tangkoko, where achingly cute, saucer-eyed tarsiers and endangered crested black macaques are the main attractions, along with toucan hornbills. The village of Airmadidi has remarkable carved stone sarcophagi dating from the pre-Christian Minahasan culture.

Inside the harbor there is a public terminal. It will be crowded during the shipping days where the locals are preparing boarding the local ships. It is about 15 minute walk from the terminal to downtown.

The spell of picturesque, peaceful and prosperous harbor

Bitung is the harbor of Manado city. It's located in the north eastern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi that forms the Province of North Sulawesi and facing the Moluccas Strait. The administrative region of Bitung covers the foothills of Mount Dua Sudara and a stretch of sea that includes the island of Lembeh, whose clear waters are a paradise for divers. Meanwhile, the port of Bitung is kept busy with the loading and unloading of cargo, trading and as well as education. Not far beyond the town of Bitung lies an amazing array of exotic fauna and flora. Nearby, the Tangkoko Nature Reserve is habitat of the rare tiny tarsiers, cute little monkeys with big saucer eyes that are now the icon of Bitung. While at sea, the diving spots around the Lembeh Strait contain some of the most stunning tropical ocean life. It is this cosmopolitan fusion of Bitung, its wealth in sea produce, flora and fauna on land and in the sea that have made Bitung a flourishing international port for trade and shipping, eco-friendly in tourism development and in step with the rhythms of today’s globalized world.

The distance between Manado, capital of North Sulawesi and the port of Bitung is approximately  44 km. If you do not  wish to travel by private car, there are public buses available that serve the Manado-Bitung route, starting from Terminal Paal Dua or the Karombasan Bus Terminal. 

You can rent a car in Manado with varying costs.  Bitung is also accessible by ferry. These ply the following routes: Bitung-Pananaru, Bitung-Siau, Bitung-Melanguane and  Bitung- Ternate .

Well, I just love Bali so much, and we fell in love with the culture, people, the food. Everything was just amazing. I feel like in Bali, you can find serenity anywhere, literally. It's our favorite place that we've been to on our entire trip.
