Boyzone interview: “There’s no one out there as raw as we were”

As they release a farewell album and plan a final tour, boyzone reflect on 25 years in the industry.

As I make my way through the backstage corridors of London’s Savoy Theatre, I hear Boyzone rehearsing brand new track “Because”, co-written with Ed Sheeran, through the open door of their dressing room.

I’m doing my best to stay cool, the consummate professional. But the 10-year-old girl in me, the one with the fold-out Smash Hits poster of each of the band’s faces on her wall, who knows every word to “Love Me for a Reason”, is threatening to break out in a state of hysteria as I step in to face Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch.

It’s been 25 years since Louis Walsh plucked them out of 300 young hopefuls in Dublin – Keating just 16 at the time – as part of his masterplan to create an Irish Take That. They had little idea of what was to come next.

“What was amazing was the innocence and vulnerability of a young teenage guy with a hope and a dream about being in a band,” says Lynch, 42. “But also never questioning whether it was going to be successful. It was an instant start…” In 1995, Said and Done hit No 1 and the band was catapulted to fame.

“A white Transit van travelling around Ireland with five lads who didn’t know their arse from their elbow, making it up as we went along – it was absolute magic”

“A white Transit van travelling around Ireland with five lads who didn’t know their arse from their elbow, making it up as we went along – it was absolute magic,” says Keating, 41. “For me, it was the best time for the band. If you could rewind back to a moment for a second, I’d put myself there, when everything was simple.”

They recognise that their chart-smashing ballads and covers, from “No Matter What” to Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son”, caught the zeitgeist. “I think most genres of music have their moment,” says Keating. “Britpop and pop music kind of sat together in the 90s, when you had Oasis and Blur, but you also had Take That and Boyzone and Backstreet Boys and N-Sync. And then the girls came through – the Spice Girls and All Saints – and it was brilliant. There was no time like it for pop music.”

Six studio albums, the same number of chart-topping hits and countless tours later, fresh faces, floppy curtains and a squeaky-clean image have given way to beards and tattoos, fatherhood and maturity – as well as a greater sense of identity for each member. It’s only now that they fully grasp the scale of some of their successes, such as performing with Pavarotti in Modena.

Christine and the Queens: ‘It’s like, is she a man now? No, I’m just working on a different version of femininity’

“At the end of the show, everyone came back out on the stage and performed ‘We Are the World’ – BB King, Joe Cocker, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin,” recalls Duffy, 44. “Everybody had one line to sing. It was just surreal. You’re afraid you’re going to be caught out. Like, ‘I hope this mic isn’t on.’”

“To be recognised by people like that and share a stage with the best in the world,” Keating continues, “we were never going to be credible, but to look for respect was really everything we could have dreamt of. From that moment we were respected in the music industry as a powerhouse of a band.”

Boyzone Pudsey Bear

They say that their upbringing meant their egos were never allowed to become overblown, even in the face of global stardom. “We came from working-class backgrounds and our families kept us quite grounded,” says Duffy. “We never thought we belonged there. But to be honest with you, everybody feels like that like. Not to be name-dropping, but I was talking to Bono recently and he said: ‘Still getting away with it!’ And I was like, ‘Even he thinks it!’ And he’s Bono, you know?”

“One Direction could promote a single by pressing send. We had to go on a plane and do every radio station, every TV channel, every city”

Though they make light of it now, being swept up in the music business at such a tender age was challenging: “Everybody has insecurities,” says Keating. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a billion in the bank or £100. It’s all relative. I was the youngest in the band and I thought, ‘I shouldn’t be here’. You build up walls so no one can see in, but you also want to protect yourself from seeing out sometimes.”

What’s changed, since the height of their careers, is technology. “We had no social media, no selfies, there were no smartphones,” he explains. When they compare themselves to bands such as One Direction , skyrocketed to world-wide domination by The X Factor , they see a difference. “They had 100 million followers; we had 10 per cent of that. They could promote a single by pressing send. We had to go on a plane and do every radio station, every TV channel, every city.”

The band recall being home for just two weeks in a whole year, the other 50 spent on the road. “I had only been on an aeroplane once before I joined the band. I thought it was a great novelty,” says Duffy. “A travel agent said in ’98 that we had 148 flights that year. So I kind of got over the flying thing quite quickly.”

“When the paper outed Stephen, it wasn’t his choice, which was very tough for him to deal with. But in the end it became the best thing for him. He could shine”

They have seen the entertainment industry grow in terms of diversity, too. “We watched it first-hand with Steo, you know,” Keating says of bandmate Stephen Gately, whose sexuality was kept a secret.

“When the paper outed him, it wasn’t his choice, which was very tough for him to deal with. But in the end it became the best thing for him, because he became the character he was. He could shine.”

From Cheryl to Ariana Grande: how banging break-up songs took over the charts

The sudden death of Gately, aged 33, from a congenital heart condition in October 2009, after the band had reformed, were touring and making new music, is an event that affected each of them deeply. “Nobody has the tools to deal with that type of stuff,” Duffy says. “Losing someone, before their time, at that age – you have to fight to find out how you’re supposed to deal with that. It was a very, very low point for us. We never really found our feet the way we had when he was alive. Though he’s very much alive in the room when we’re together.”

Now, they say, it’s finally time to hang up their hats. They have just released a farewell record, Thank You & Goodnight, and there is an epic tour planned for next year. “As we talked about the album, how it was going to sound, it was apparent that we’d been a long time in the game,” Lynch says.

“It’s more about our supporters who’ve been there for us all those years, and a request from them about going back on tour. We said, ‘Right, let’s do this one last time. And make it a bit of a hoo-ha.’” They’ve worked hard over two years to bring their sound up to date. “The album itself is almost forward-thinking, although we’re saying goodbye.” “Shane had the idea to do three songs which represent each of our musical tastes,” explains Graham, 46. There is one exception: “One song – ‘Dream’ – harks back to the old days. It has Steo on it, and it feels like a Boyzone song from the 90s,” says Keating. After uncovering a demo recorded with Gately, they reconstructed it with their harmonies and fresh lyrics.

“There’s no one out there as raw as we were”

The arena tour is already almost sold out. “I think people love to be transported back to their teenage years,” says Duffy, “to be reminded of a time when they didn’t have responsibilities. For those two hours we’re on stage, they are stress-free – and I think we are, too.”

“It’s very important for us to know that our fans are happy when they leave our show,” Graham emphasises. “Sometimes bands go on a little too long, they don’t have that spark on stage. We don’t want to do that. We want to write our final chapter, do it our own way, go out on top.”

(Photo: Warner Music)

They’re not quite ready to get too sentimental, with no final date set and a packed year of shows ahead. “There’s still a lot of work to be done,” says Lynch. “There’s a lot of clarity in saying goodbye – but there are a lot of emotions floating around which we’re trying to hold back and get on with the job.”

The Prodigy: ‘Calvin Harris? That’s just waffle. That isn’t real’

Bringing Boyzone to an end will also allow them to focus on their distinct life goals. Duffy has a passion for acting, taking on diverse roles from Ciaran McCarthy in Coronation Street to Stapler in a revival of Billy’s Roche’s A Handful of Stars on the stage. Keating will continue his solo music career and radio breakfast show on Magic. Graham sees the studio, working on songwriting and production, as his domain, while Lynch has his fingers in lots of pies, from motor-racing to business ventures in male-grooming and shoes, namely his Prohibition-era inspired The Elk & Clipper barber shops and Amen Shoes & Suits.

Do they believe anyone has followed in their footsteps? “No, there’s no one out there as raw as we were,” says Keating. “Everyone is very polished.” “Talented,” corrects Duffy – and the room cracks up.

The Mirror have now reported that the group have come together to buy shares in Lancashire's Chorley FC, where they also plan to perform a series of concerts.

A source told the publication that the band will be attending Chorley FC's home game against Solihull on Saturday to officially seal the deal.

'Ronan, Shane and Keith are bursting with excitement. Boyzone's presence at this Saturday's game will undoubtedly create an electric atmosphere, filled with music, joy, and a shared love for football and community.

'Chorley FC is a 140 year old club and Chorley is a big town in a great location, perfect for Boyzone.'

MailOnline has contacted Boyzone's representative's for comment.

Westlife's Brian McFadden is also interested in the opportunity as they become the latest celebrities to buy stakes in a football club, following on from Ryan Reynolds and Stormzy.

The group achieved international fame as well as six UK No.1s - including Words, No Matter What, All That Matters To Me and You Needed Me.

The band officially split in 2000, but have frequently got back together for landmark tours - including the Back Again...No Matter What tour in 2009 - which was the last time they'd perform as a five-piece.

The band also reunited in 2013 to celebrate their 20th anniversary with a tour and new releases.

In 2018, Boyzone confirmed their plans to split for good after releasing one final album dedicated to late bandmate Stephen Gately.

The band revealed they would call it quits after their 25th anniversary tour and album.

It was a tribute to Stephen – who tragically died suddenly in 2009 of a congenital heart defect aged 33.

Confirming the news on Twitter, the four piece shared a picture of themselves along with a statement.

They wrote: 'The new is out and yes it's true. Our new album will be the last for Boyzone. We've had 25 amazing years and we promise you that this will be our biggest and best year yet. Watch this space... #BZ25 (sic)'

Included on the album was an unheard song by Stephen, which was altered to include their own vocals.

Keith previously admitted he struggled to cope when the band returned to touring after Stephen's shock death.

He said: 'We did two huge [comeback] tours in 2008 and 2009, and we did four nights in each venue. We then came back with the Greatest Hits album in 2009, and in the October we were in the middle of recording the Brother album when we lost Stephen.

'He died in 2009 and we were back on the road in 2011, two years later - which was way too soon. Way too soon.

'Emotionally and psychologically... I'll be very honest, myself and Shane were drinking too much, trying to numb the pain, onstage and offstage.

'It just didn't work, and it wasn't enjoyable. We didn't want to be together. That's when we took a sabbatical.'

Busted and McFly made 2000 pop fans' dreams come true when they announced they were to become one band in 2013.

And Nineties heartthrobs Boyzone and Westlife are to follow suit as Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy are coming together to create a super-duo, called Boyzlife.

The former pop stars are spearheading the venture and revealed it 'has no limits' as they shared their plans to tour together.

The pair will share stories from their pop hey-day, as well performing each of their bands best known hits.

Bryan and Keith will hit the road in March with a 12-date tour across the UK.

Keith attempted to crack the film and television industry after Boyzone disbanded in 2000.

He appeared on the 2001 series of Celebrity Big Brother and had a very brief stint on ITV's Splash in 2014 but it was his role as Ciaran McCarthy on Coronation Street which put him on the radar.

Keith and his wife of 25 years Lisa Smith are reportedly set to divorce.

The singer is 'hopeful' he can save his marriage but has been living separately from Lisa since moving out of their £1.15 million marital home in Dublin just before Christmas.

The singer has yet to speak publicly about the state of his marriage yet sources told The Irish Sun that he isn't ready to call time on their union just yet, revealing: 'There is no one else involved.

'It is serious, but Keith is hopeful that they can sort this thing out. They care deeply for one another and their children.'

Keith and Lisa share two children, son Jay, 27, and daughter Mia, 23.

Reports of their split emerged on Saturday as it was claimed Keith is 'in bits'.

A source told the Mirror: 'It has come as a shock to everyone. Back in July, they appeared happier than ever while celebrating 25 years together on a trip of a lifetime to the French Riviera.'

The source added that they were 'trying to keep the divorce civil' for the sake of their children. The couple have now unfollowed each other on social media.

Boyzone back together! Nineties sensation set for epic reunion tour amid singer’s marriage split

Boyzone Reunion

PUBLISHED ON

Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch, and Keith Duffy reuniting for a spectacular comeback tour

In a nostalgic blast from the past, Boyzone is gearing up for a sensational comeback tour , igniting excitement among fans worldwide. The iconic nineties boyband, known for their chart-topping hits and infectious energy, is set to reunite on stage once again, promising a wave of nostalgia and unforgettable performances.

Rumours of the band’s revival have been swirling, with speculation reaching a fever pitch following Keith Duffy’s marriage breakdown. While the band officially disbanded in 2000, the prospect of a reunion has long tantalized fans, and now, it seems their wishes are about to come true.

Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch, and Keith Duffy are poised to take centre stage once more, reviving the magic of their heyday with a series of electrifying concerts. But the excitement doesn’t stop there – the band has reportedly invested in Lancashire’s Chorely FC, signalling a new chapter in their illustrious career.

According to insiders, Boyzone’s involvement with the football club marks a significant milestone, poised to elevate Chorley into the spotlight like never before. With plans to perform gigs at the club, the band is set to bring a fusion of music, joy, and community spirit to fans both old and new.

Having skyrocketed to fame in the early nineties, Boyzone dominated the charts with six UK No.1 hits, including classics like “Words,” “No Matter What,” and “You Needed Me.” Despite parting ways in 2000, the band has periodically reunited for landmark tours, captivating audiences with their timeless tunes and infectious charm.

In 2013, Boyzone celebrated an incredible 20 years in the industry with a triumphant tour and a slew of new releases, reaffirming their status as pop legends. However, their journey hasn’t been without its challenges, with the untimely passing of member Stephen Gately casting a shadow over the band’s final years.

For Keith Duffy, the reunion holds particular significance amid reports of his marriage troubles. The singer, who is reportedly in the midst of a divorce from his wife Lisa after 26 years together, is said to be navigating a tumultuous period in his personal life.

Despite the challenges, sources suggest that Keith remains hopeful for reconciliation, driven by a deep love for his family and a desire to overcome adversity.

As Boyzone prepares to take to the stage once more, fans eagerly await the chance to relive the magic of the nineties and celebrate the enduring legacy of one of pop music’s most beloved boybands.

Former Boyzone singer Keith Duffy was reportedly verbally and physically attacked by a gang of six men in a Dublin nightclub over the weekend.

While they were in a roped-off celebrity area in the club, half a dozen men started heckling his wife, later becoming verbally aggressive, according to the report by the Irish Mail On Sunday . When Duffy stepped in, the men became physically violent towards him.

Huge boyband star teases reunion after signing for explosive TV documentary

Keith Duffy has hinted that he and the Boyzone lads may get back on stage together, should their upcoming Sky documentary be a huge hit amongst fans

Keith Duffy has hinted that Boyzone could reunite in the near future

  • 19:18, 1 Oct 2023
  • Updated 08:47, 2 Oct 2023

Boyzone could reunite just four years after the quartet took their final bow following a huge career.

The Irish stars dominated the charts from 1993 until they initially announced a hiatus in 2000, seven years after they were catapulted to international fame. However this lasted seven years and they finally reunited in 2007, before calling it a day in 2019.

But while there had been speculation that they may reform in 2023 for their upcoming 30th anniversary, Ronan Keating had ruled this out and recently stood by his point as he addressed crowds at PopWorld Live. The reason the ruling out a reunion is due to the tragic death of late band member, Stephen Gateley , who died in 2009.

Now Keith Duffy has hinted that Ronan's statement may no longer stand should their upcoming Sky TV documentary go down a storm with their dedicated fanbase. In a new interview, Keith has hinted that following the success of the WHAM! documentary, he and the lads will be back on stage.

"That Wham! doc was so huge. If George Michael was still alive, Wham! would've gone back out to do a few concerts," he told The Sun . He added: "Maybe after this Boyzone documentary comes out, there'll be an appetite for us to perform again." Boyzone's story will be shared in a three-part documentary series.

The documentary will follow their meteoric rise from performing intimate shows at rural pubs in their native Ireland before going on to performing in stadiums across the globe. Keith continued: "We were spat at, we were glassed (at the start). But we grafted our way to the top and earned our right to play arenas all across the world."

Over the course of their career, Boyzone have sold over 20 million records across the globe and all 16 of their singles have charted in the UK top five. They became the first Irish act to have four Number 1 hits in the Official UK Charts.

On April 30, 2018, the official X (formerly Twitter ) account for Boyzone announced they would be disbanding following their 25th anniversary. They said: "The news is out and yes, it's true... Our new album will be the last for Boyzone. We've had twenty-five amazing years and we promise you that this will be our biggest and best year yet. Watch this space..."

Meanwhile, ex-Boyzone member Shane Lynch who now resides in Cheshire with his wife Sheena recently blasted the music industry Shane who has stepped away from music and is pursuing his love for fast cars said on The Profile podcast: "I've been in rooms – at the top of the top – where albums are prayed over demonically. Music is prayed over demonically that goes out to the radio stations, to the public.

"When you see that stuff, it's frightening. Rituals, ceremonies, everything to give light to the devil, to Satan. It's a satanic music industry." But when quizzed as to whether he meant an actual Satanic ritual or whether he was speaking in a figurative sense, he commented: "Literally. Yes."

When Boyzone split back in 2000, they left fans all over the world feeling devastated. However, recent reports suggest that a reunion on the cards.

In fact, the Irish band - now comprising of Ronan Keating , 46, Keith Duffy, 49, Mikey Graham , 51, and Shane Lynch , 47 - are reportedly reuniting for a string of concerts and could even be entering into a joint business venture too.

According to The Mirror , the group, who were formed by Louis Walsh back in 1993, are coming together to buy shares in Lancashire's Chorley FC, where they also plan to perform a series of concerts.

OK! have contacted Boyzone's agent for comment.

A reunion could be on the cards for Boyzone

Following speculation that they would reunite for their 30th anniversary this year, an insider explained: "It's a really exciting move for Chorley FC. It is a game-changer that has the potential to bring the town into the limelight like never before, generating a buzz and publicity that will shine a bright light on Chorley.

"Ronan, Shane and Keith are bursting with excitement. Boyzone's presence at this Saturday's game will undoubtedly create an electric atmosphere, filled with music, joy, and a shared love for football and community.

"Chorley FC is a 140 year old club and Chorley is a big town in a great location, perfect for Boyzone."

These rumours will no doubt create a huge buzz around fans, after Ronan famously said back in 2018 that the band wouldn't be getting back together after they "went out on a high" with their final tour and album back in 2018.

He explained things "never felt the same" after the death of bandmate Stephen Gately in 2009. Stephen passed away at just 33 years old after an undetected congenital heart defect.

Ronan, who is now dad to Jack, Missy and Ali, previously said that ending Boyzone - who topped the chart with hits such as No Matter What, Love Me For A Reason and Baby Can I Hold You - at that time was the "right thing".

He explained: "We had 25 great years. We went out on a high. We wrote the last chapter ourselves.

"Finishing it the way we did after 25 years was the right thing. We went out on a high, we had five great nights at the Palladium."

Ronan Keating (3rd L) says he's been planing a Boyzone reunion to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary with Mikey Graham (L), Keith Duffy (2nd L) and Shane Lynch (R) (Picture: Getty Images)

Forget The Spice Girls and Take That – Boyzone have confirmed that they will reunite in 2018 for their 25th anniversary.

Taking to Instagram to reveal the news, the lads said: ‘2018 will see Boyzone celebrate their 25th anniversary!

‘That’s something that Ronan, Keith, Mikey & Shane are incredibly proud of. Plans are being hatched for new music and lots of touring throughout the year. But next year still seems a long way off so in case you can’t wait, the Boyz are hitting the road for some exclusive UK shows later this summer.

Shane Lynch previously teased potential plans for their 25th anniversary next year, saying how they ‘can’t just let it go’.

The 40-year-old singer appeared on Lorraine to promote his show Supercar Megabuild, but couldn’t let a visit slide without teasing the reunion to fans: ‘Look 25 years, we definitely have to rubber stamp that.We can’t let it go and I love the boys. I love being with them, we just have to work everything out but I think it’s great times for Boyzone.’

The band previously celebrated their 20th anniversary with a reunion tour, but Shane said how this time they’ll be able to do it on their own terms, adding; ‘I think we might be able to take our own reins this time and actually do what we want to do.’

Boyzone now consist of four members after Stephen Gately sadly passed away in 2009, but Shane says he’ll always be a member of the band.

‘Our Ste, it doesn’t matter where we are as Boyzone, we’ll always be five. Our fans are the most important and I think if they want it, we would give it to them,’ said Shane.

Huge 818kg Giant Pumpkin Squashes Russian Record

Huge 818kg giant pumpkin squashes Russian record

A whopping 817kg pumpkin has been crowned the largest in Russian history, according to Moscow State University Botanical Garden.

Aleksandr Chusov, 28, took home the top prize after a ceremonial weigh-in ahead of the Autumn Festival of Vegetables at the university.

Explaining how he grew the massive gourd on a six-acre plot, the gardener said: “You select the most giant pumpkins, cross them with the most giant pumpkins, and as a result, the pumpkins become even bigger and bigger.

“Then also, the correct agricultural technology [is required], which involves correct formation, correct watering, correct fertilizing, and planting time.”
