While the diversity of the expat population significantly contributes to the UAE’s economic growth, it also presents the risk of non-citizens fleeing the country to avoid legal issues. To mitigate this, the UAE government imposes travel bans on some residents under specific circumstances. If you’re concerned about potential travel restrictions, here’s how you can check your UAE travel ban status in Dubai and other emirates.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HAVE A UAE TRAVEL BAN?

The UAE immigration travel ban basically restricts you from crossing the country’s borders – whether by entering, re-entering or exiting – via any means of transport until certain requirements have been met to lift the ban. Simply put, you cannot enter or leave the country, unless the ban is lifted. This is what a travel ban in the UAE means.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting Tips

Technical issues: Occasionally, travelers may encounter technical issues when attempting to check for travel bans online. This can include slow internet speeds, website errors, or other technical difficulties. If you experience technical issues, try refreshing the page or clearing your browser cache to see if that resolves the issue. If the problem persists, try using a different device or accessing the website at a later time.

Inaccurate information: If you enter inaccurate information when checking for travel bans in Dubai, you may receive incorrect results. False positives: In some cases, travelers may receive false positives when checking for travel bans in Dubai. This can occur if there is a similar name or passport number on record that has been subject to a travel ban. To avoid this issue, double-check your information and consider submitting a manual travel ban inquiry to ensure that there are no issues.

Travel Ban in the UAE: 7 Common Reasons Explained

Main Points

7 Common Reasons for Travel Ban in the UAE: Know the Restrictions:

Travel ban can be imposed in the UAE for administrative or legal reasons, either by executive bodies like the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP) or by court orders. Here are the various instances that may lead to a travel ban:

  • Visa Overstay
  • Absconding Case
  • Defaulting on a Bank Loan
  • Late Rent Payment
  • Criminal Cases
  • Civil or Commercial Cases
  • Acting as a Guarantor

1.Visa Overstay

When someone overstays their visa in the UAE, they are in violation of the country’s immigration laws. As a consequence, they might face deportation, and after leaving the country, a travel ban may be imposed to prevent them from re-entering.

2. Absconding Case:

An absconding case is filed by employers against employees who have abandoned their jobs without notice or have not reported to work for a certain period. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) takes such cases seriously, and if a ban is placed, it can only be lifted by the employer (sponsor) or by proving the case invalid to the relevant authorities.

3. Defaulting on a Bank Loan:

If someone defaults on their bank loan or credit card payment, the bank may take legal action to recover the dues. This action may involve presenting a security cheque issued by the individual. If the cheque bounces or the bank seeks full payment through a court order, an immediate travel ban can be imposed.

4. Late Rent Payment:

Failure to respond to the landlord’s rent payment notice or not meeting tenant obligations can lead to a travel ban. The Rental Dispute Centre (RDC) intervenes in such cases to enforce rental agreements and ensure landlords’ rights are protected.

5. Criminal Cases:

For ongoing criminal investigations or court cases, an administrative authority may issue a circular to prevent the accused person from leaving the country until the case is resolved and the verdict is implemented. In severe criminal cases, like drug use or assault, leading to deportation, a travel ban may prevent re-entry to the UAE after deportation.

6. Civil or Commercial Cases:

In civil or commercial cases involving non-payment of dues by a company or family court guardianship disputes, a travel ban can be imposed as a precautionary measure until the legal proceedings are concluded.

7. Acting as a Guarantor:

If an individual stands as a guarantor for someone involved in a police or court case, they may face a travel ban during the period they serve as the guarantor. The ban is to ensure that the guarantor remains available to answer for the individual they have guaranteed.

Overall, travel bans are taken seriously in the UAE and are intended to ensure compliance with laws and regulations. If someone finds themselves facing a travel ban, it is essential to address the underlying issue and take appropriate legal steps to have the ban lifted or resolved.

This way, you can resolve any outstanding matters and ensure a smoother travel experience.

Nigeria: Two Years After UAE Visa Ban, Portal Opens As Emirates' Bookings Resume

Ahead of the resumption of its flights on October 1, 2024, after a two-year hiatus, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) flag carrier, Emirates, has opened ticket booking for Nigerian passengers.

This was just as the visa application portal was also opened for Nigerians visiting the UAE.

Emirates had in May, this year announced it would resume services to Nigeria from October 1, operating a daily service between Lagos and Dubai, two years after the airline suspended flights to Nigeria over inability to repatriate funds from its ticket sales in Nigeria as it was owed over $85m.

Authorities in the UAE also followed with a visa ban on Nigerians, thereby halting movement between Nigeria and the UAE.

Daily Trust reports that the federal government reopened negotiations with the UAE authorities and Emirates with a view to resolving the issues.

Ahead of the resumption of its flights in less than one month from now, Emirates has opened booking for Nigerian passengers with the cheapest fare of $665.30 (N1,059,969.41) and $8,852 for first class.

This means that any passenger who wants to travel from Lagos to Dubai or Dubai to Lagos from October 1, 2024, can book on the airline's website.

Sources told our correspondent yesterday that the visa application portal had also been opened, with Emirates communicating the development to its Nigerian travel partners.

"We are excited to inform you that the Dubai Visa Processing Centre (DVPC) has reopened and they are now accepting visa applications for passengers travelling to Dubai," a message sighted by our correspondent read.

Checks by our correspondent indicated that a 60-day tourist visa costs N218,450 without any verification fee.

In addition, those stranded in the UAE who want to return home have also been granted amnesty with effect from September 1.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) announced the two-month visa amnesty. The period offers a crucial opportunity for individuals staying illegally in the UAE to rectify their status without facing fines or penalties.

The amnesty is comprehensive, covering all types of visas, including tourist visas, expired residency visas, and even in situations where individuals were born without any official documentation.

The UAE government said that the inclusivity ensured that a wide range of individuals could benefit from the programme; whether they had overstayed their visa or never had proper documentation.

Many Nigerians in the UAE are expected to take advantage of the amnesty to either regularise their stay or exit the country, Daily Trust was told.

A Nigerian resident in the UAE who spoke with our correspondent yesterday said, "Those of us who are here, including those who have overstayed, can take advantage of the amnesty window to return home.

"For those of us who are here now, we can get a visa with the amnesty, and you can get it with all the charges and levies removed. Maybe by next week, those people in Nigeria who want to come to the UAE can begin to get visas, but for now, the amnesty is for those who are here in the UAE."

It would be recalled that the federal government announced that the UAE had lifted its visa ban on Nigerians.

As soon as the announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, a fake website was created indicating that applicants were to pay N640,000 verification fee and a proof of $10,000 in their accounts each. Some people who rushed to pay through the website later found it to be fake and not affiliated with the UAE. The UAE denied the conditions.

Aviation analyst and Director of Research, Zenith Travels, Mr. Olumide Ohunayo said while the visa application has resumed, the UAE authority still placed restrictions on some applicants. He said the government can still intercede to expand the visa offering or reciprocate by restricting Nigerian visa to some UAE applicants.
