101 Magical Places to Visit in the South for All-American Escapes

USA - Georgia - Savannah - Savannah, Georgia, USA at Forsyth Park Fountain.

Last Updated on: 19th September 2021, 01:14 pm

From the East Coast to the Mississippi River, I just adore traveling around the American South, whether it’s for a Southern US weekend getaway or a longer southeastern road trip. I took a quick count, and my best guess is that I’ve taken over forty independent trips to the South, so trust me when I say, you will not run out of great places to visit in the South.

Here are my favorite places to go in the Southern United States, plus the places that are on my American South bucket list (many of which I will be crossing off soon!).

Can’t read now? Pin for later!

These are my favorite companies that I use on my own travels.

The Best Places to Visit in the South

No one human call see all of these places in one trip unless you’re fully nomadic, so don’t worry if it takes you more than one trip (or ten) to see even twenty percent of this list! And traveling the South is so much fun, and such an important learning experience, that you shouldn’t rush through it. Slow travel here is a great way to grapple with America’s past.

How to Use this List

I have chosen my favorite places and a few bucket list items in the South. I am listing them by state, to make it easy for you to plan your own Southern USA road trip. Where available, I link to other travel guides I have about the area to help you plan your trip even further in detail.

These places have been chosen for a myriad of reasons, from their importance in Civil War history, Civil Rights history, famous music venues and live music scenes, grand antebellum or European architecture (and the heaviness that comes with that), delicious variations of Southern cuisine, great outdoor activities, charming historic districts, famous nightlife, etc. There simply is no one-size-fits-all guide for deciding where to go in the South, so I’m including a bit of everything!

While I am listing southern cities and towns you should visit, many have been chosen because of their proximity to a state park or national park that you can see while in the area or the cities or towns might be known for stunning beaches or beautiful waterfalls. The South has great places for biking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, golfing, and more. Don’t spend all your time in the south indoors soaking up the Southern Hospitality!

Note that I am not including Texas, since I include it in my Southwest USA region. However, there are parts of Eastern Texas that identify culturally and historically with the South.

The Yellowhammer State is one of the most important states to visit to experience the Civil Rights Trail. From good eats to important historic spots, you’ll leave Alabama with an expanded mind in addition to an expanded waistline.

A famous  quote about Alabama  by Paula Poundstone goes “I was born in Alabama, but I only lived there for a month before I’d done everything there was to do.” That may have been true decades ago, but it certainly isn’t now!

From Birmingham to Gulf Shores, there’s just so much to do here that you can’t fit it into one small trip (or five).

It may not be New York, but Birmingham is the Magic City, and that counts for a lot. While here, make sure to visit the  Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument,  but don’t stop there! The historic sites here are spread out all over the city, and there is no shortage of important  things to do in Birmingham.

The city has great food, a charming state park just a half-hour away, and fabulous historic architecture. Don’t overlook this industrial capital!

The city of Selma is famous for the march Civil Rights protestors made across the Edmund Pettus Bridge but plan to spend at least a day here exploring the history of this city beyond its most famous landmark.

From Brown Chapel AME Church to the National Voting Rights Museum and its sister museum Ancient Africa, Enslavement, and Civil War Museum, there are many important sites to visit before or after you make your own walk across the bridge.

While you can visit as a day trip from Birmingham or Montgomery, there’s more than enough here to dedicate to its own weekend getaway.

While the highlight for many here will be the beautiful riverfront, Montgomery is the state capital, and as such it holds the key to many important historic events that took place in the state.

Of important note to those wanting to travel the Civil Rights Trail are Dexter Parsonage, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr lived, and the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where he was the pastor, as well as the Rosa Parks Museum and the Legacy Museum and National Memorial to Peace and Justice.

For those interested in the Jazz Age, make sure to visit the F. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald Museum.

Gulf Shores

I probably don’t need to convince you to plan a trip to one of the best beach towns in the South. Beyond its titular beautiful Gulf (of Mexico) Shores, this town is famous for its hospitality as well as the pristine waters of the Gulf State Park.

When you’re done swimming, make sure to hang out on the Original Oyster House Boardwalk and taste Matt’s Homemade Ice Cream.

Home to the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the country, Mobile is definitely a destination you do not want to overlook when planning an Alabama itinerary.

For history lovers, you should make sure to visit the GulfQuest National Maritime Museum as well as the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. The Carnival Museum highlights the city’s role at the forefront of Mardi Gras in the United States, while the Fort of Colonial Mobile dates all the way back to 1702.

If you love Space Tourism, make sure to plan a visit to Huntsville. From Space Camp to the Space Museum, this is the top hangout for mini future astronauts to get in touch with their space-centric dreams. And as a little girl who has a blast at the  space center in Houston  when I was eight, I wholeheartedly recommend Huntsville as a great place to go on vacation in Alabama with kids.

I wasn’t prepared for the emotions (both good and bad) that I would feel visiting Tuskeegee. So much so that I went back again this year to see it in more depth. The highlights here are the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site and Tuskeegee University, but the downtown is charming enough to merit a separate stop.

Roll tide? Not in Auburn! While here, take in an Auburn Tigers game, enjoy the college-town atmosphere, and take part in some university hijinks. Beyond indulging in college life and sports, visitors here can enjoy Chewacla State Park, the Tuskeegee National Forest, and the Southeastern Raptor Center.

New Orleans doesn’t have the only must-see French Quarter in the South! Make sure to stop by this charming neighborhood while in Fairhope. You should also make time to catch a sunset on Mobile Bay, get out on the water, and walk down the town’s municipal pier.

Arkansas is known as the natural state, and with its long list of natural wonders, it’s not hard to understand why.

The Natural State is one that I overlooked growing up. I didn’t realize how lucky I was to visit Fort Smith and Little Rock, and I really didn’t understand the beauty of  Arkansas’s national parks ,   lakes ,  mountains,  hidden gems , and  small towns .  They even have some cool  castles in Arkansas!

I love traveling to Arkansas so much that I actually cover it in-depth on my website  Oklahoma Wonders  since Arkansas is a place we go all the time. You can see all my state and city guides  here.

Here are some of my favorite places to visit in Arkansas and the places still on my Arkansas bucket list.

Little Rock

As a self-proclaimed history fan, I’d be remiss if I didn’t put Little Rock at the very top of my recommendations of places you should visit, whether as a Romantic southern getaway or if you visit  Little Rock with kids.

The city was founded in 1831 and it still has a wide range of historic buildings, parks, and neighborhoods to explore. Of course, the most famous site is the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, which is the site of one of the most pivotal chapters of the US Civil Rights Movement.

Hot Springs

For those of you who are looking for a little respite from the hectic pace of life, this is the perfect place to go.

Hot Springs sits at the base of the Ouachita Mountains and is a popular destination for travelers looking to relax in nature. It’s home to over 60 unique hotels, resorts, and inns.

The town has one of the largest collections of Victorian-style buildings in the US. It’s also home to Hot Springs National Park, one of the most  popular national parks in Arkansas.

Eureka Springs

Eureka Springs is a  beautiful small town in Arkansas with a population of about 2,000 people. The town is rich in culture and history.

Eureka Springs is known for its hot springs, obviously, but it also has a Victorian architecture that dates back to the late 1800s. You can feel like you are stepping back in time when walking its charming streets

The city also has some of the best antique shops in Arkansas as well as many other unique shops with handmade items and locally made goods. Whether you’re looking for something new or old, you will find it here.

One of the most popular attractions to see on vacation in Eureka Springs, beyond the springs and the shopping, is live music. You can find traditional Arkansas folk music as well as Blues and modern groups.

Fort Smith is a city that is located near the Arkansas River in the northwestern part of the state. There are many old buildings with a rich history in Fort Smith and people come to visit them.

Fort Smith offers great opportunities for outdoor recreation as well. People can visit various parks and trails, or take part in bike tours along the Riverline Trail, which traverses the entire length of Fort Smith, from west to east.

The city also is home to a variety of museums like the Fort Smith Museum of History and the museum at the Fort Smith National Historic Site, which showcase different aspects (both positive and negative) of life in the early days of America’s westward expansion.

Mountain View

Bentonville, fayetteville, florida (9), amelia island, st. augustine, sanibel island, panama city, tybee island, jekyll island, cumberland island, bowling green, new orleans, lake charles , baton rouge, natchitoches, poverty point, mississippi, hattiesburg, deer island, north carolina, outer banks, winston salem, south carolina, hilton head, myrtle beach, seabrook island, isle of palms, pigeon forge, chattanooga, sevierville, charlottesville, williamsburg, virginia beach, cape charles, harpers ferry.

Tourist Destinations in the Southern U.S.

The South is both a geographical location and a way of life. A distinct culture of music, cuisine, and easy-going people defines the South, and the region has also been booming in recent years thanks to cities like Atlanta , Charlotte, Austin, and Tampa. Some of the best food and live music can be found throughout the region. Learn more about visiting the cities in the South and the towns in between with our guide to the top places to visit in the southern U.S.

New Orleans

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

With its reputation for throwing big parties, such as Mardi Gras , New Orleans is one of the most popular destinations in the South. Visitors to New Orleans can get a taste of the Cajun and Creole cultures not found anywhere else in the country.

Sure, you can spend several hours or even days on Bourbon Street, but with so many  things to do , you'd be remiss not to take advantage of the whole city.

See truly unique gravesites in Saint Louis Cemetery, located in the Flower District, take a frightening ghost tour, or listen to live jazz  at one of the city's many famous venues, such as the Davenport Lounge.

You will also want to feast on one of the many delicacies, including redfish, gulf oysters, po' boys, and of course, crawfish.

Merlin Entertainments

Due to the number of hotels  and theme parks,  Orlando  is the top tourist destination in all of America, including the South.

You can spend time in the House of Mouse by visiting  Walt Disney World , cast a spell with Harry Potter at Universal Studios Orlando, or get up close to marine animals at SeaWorld.

A lesser-known attraction located near the parks is the Showcase of Citrus, where guests can pick a wide variety of citrus fruits, like oranges, grapefruits, and even hybrids, as well as shop for central Florida-themed souvenirs.

Everything from country-western and blues to rock 'n' roll music comes to mind when thinking of Nashville, the Music City.

Save your pennies for a trip to the Grand Ole Opry by checking out one of these cheap or free country music attractions, earlier in the day, take a walking tour of the city, or visit one of the many beautiful  historic homes .

Austin is both southern and part of the Southwest, so it's hard to categorize it. That's probably why, when it comes to tourism, it is a "Lone Star," able to stand on its own with a bevy of attractions.

Most notably, you will find a buzzing music scene in Austin ,  which is home to the famous  South by Southwest Festival and Conference . There is also the eccentric Museum of the Weird, and several more  must-see attractions downtown .

A former host of the Olympic Games, with one of the busiest airports in the United States and home to many large corporations like Coca-Cola and CNN, Atlanta is an economic beacon in the Deep South.

Here you'll find remnants of Antebellum South, monuments to the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as world-class venues for sports, theater, and music. There’s a lot of rich history in Atlanta and plenty to see.

Depending on the season, you can check out a game of one of Atlanta's professional sports teams, or refresh yourself at The World of Coca-Cola Museum . There are also plenty of  free and cheap attractions  in the area, so a trip to ATL doesn't have to break the bank.

Charleston, South Carolina, is a genteel city that is steeped in Civil War history.

If you're not a history buff, however, the city also attracts artists, top chefs, and luxury designers, so you have several choices when picking a  tourist attraction .

Visit Rainbow Row to see a bevy of pastel-hued Georgian rowhouses, or visit one of the many former plantations for a look at the South's troubled past.

When you plan a trip to  Miami , you can expect warm, sunny weather, bathlike ocean temperatures, and the best in Latino culture outside of South America.

If you stay in South Beach, you will get a glimpse at the stunning art deco buildings, as well as the glamour of its restaurants and nightclubs, such as the famous former residence of Gianni Versace, The Villa Casa Casuarina .

Art lovers should head to Wynwood, with dozens of colorful street murals painted by artists from around the globe, and foodies can get their fill at one of the delicious and unpretentious Peruvian restaurants like Pollos & Jarras .

Hilton Head Island

For travelers that enjoy the great outdoors, Hilton Head Island  is a great choice.

An incredibly family-friendly destination, there is a Disney-owned resort, as well as plenty of sandy beaches and water sports to keep everyone entertained.

A stop at the Salty Dog Cafe is a must, and, if you're there in the warmer months, make sure to sit on the patio and enjoy the live music.

Most famously known as the  home of Elvis Presley , there is so much to see and do  in the city of Memphis.

For those looking for a taste of the nightlife, check out one of the many  bars and clubs on Beale Street . or see a show at the Memphis Pyramid, a true marvel of modern construction.

Music fans can also visit the  Memphis Rock N' Soul Museum , and of course, check out Graceland .

Home of the world's best bourbons and the famous  Kentucky Derby , Louisville has something for everyone,

Head to Churchill Downs to test your betting skills, or enjoy the local favorite, a hot brown sandwich at The Brown Hotel for a taste of Kentucky's past, or get some fresh air and exercise on the Big Four Bridge in Louisville Waterfront Park. This bridge connects Louisville with Jeffersonville, Indiana, so you will have the chance to step foot in two states by walking on the riverside path.

The 21c Museum Hotel not only offers amazing accommodations and an incredible restaurant, but there is also a rotating art display that is free and open to the public every day.

Saint Simons Island

This small barrier island is Georgia's answer to Hilton Head. Cute, quaint, and made for relaxation, you will find more golf carts riding around town than vehicles.

Saint Simon's jewel, the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort  is a stunning, luxury, family-owned beachfront resort that treats its guests like they are members of the family.

Enjoy golfing, swimming, sunning, and a gorgeous natural terrain, or pop over to one of the other nearby islands such as Sea Island or Jekyll Island for a fun day trip.

Beer lovers rejoice: there are 26 craft breweries located in this small city in North Carolina, and more than 60 in the surrounding area, making this a must stop for brew aficionados.

Visitors can also take a tour of America's largest home, The Biltmore Estate . Built by George Vanderbilt, this Châteauesque-style mansion is a must see when visiting Asheville.

For a quirkier tour, visit the Asheville Pinball Museum to see over 75 vintage pinball machines, as well as get the chance to play them.

Once relatively unknown as a tourist destination, this city in the Deep South has landed on many a traveler's bucket list.

Birmingham has become so much of the zeitgeist as of late that Food and Wine Magazine moved a significant portion of their operations to this town, so it is a foodie's paradise.

There is also a wide range of creative cocktail bars, a stunning botanical garden, several art and cultural museums, such as the Civil Rights Institute , and so much more.

Made famous by its most famous resident and hit television show with his namesake, The Andy Griffith Show, Mount Airy is a truly beautiful area of North Carolina.

Major attractions include The Andy Griffith Museum , that, of course, is an homage to the show, but also has a fascinating lower level dedicated to America's first Siamese twins, Chang and Eng Bunker.

Visitors can also ride in a replica police car from the show in a fun tour around the town, and visit one of the many stunning distilleries and wineries, such as Mayberry Spirits Distillery , which is owned and operated by a former monk.

Mark your map, pack your seersucker, and practice your “hey, y’alls.” It’s time to explore the South — a place where live oaks meet Atlantic-washed shores, where extraordinary caverns lie below the surface, where blues and jazz clubs blare music 'til late, and where a glass of bourbon is never too far off. We’re here with 25 potential additions to your travel wish list — southern edition — from limelight-loving cities to under-the-radar small towns . Here are 25 of the best weekend getaways in the South.

Related: The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2023

1. Savannah, Georgia

With well-preserved architecture and oaks dripping with Spanish moss, Savannah is easy to fall in love with. A spotlight has been thrown on the city’s dining scene in recent years; splashy new openings like The Grey and Common Thread have impressed diners with their Southern hospitality and memorable takes on Georgia-grown ingredients.

2. Bowling Green, Kentucky

ChrisBoswell/Getty Images

For some people, Bowling Green’s appeal can be summed up in two words: cars and caves. At the National Corvette Museum, even non-auto geeks might drool at the mint-condition models and prototypes of America’s most famous car. (Schedule an assembly plant tour if you want to see these babies in production.) Then go from man-made beauty to natural: Take the underground boat tour of the Lost River Cave, which has been a Native American hunting ground, Jesse James' hideaway, and, of all things, a 1930s nightclub throughout its history. Mammoth Cave National Park isn’t too far from here if you’re interested in shimmying down into the longest-known cave in the world.

3. Chattanooga, Tennessee

joe daniel price/Getty Images

Chattanooga is having a moment. The scenic riverside city leaves a mark on visitors with its mountain scenery and booming downtown filled with hotels, barbecue joints, and hot spots like Easy Bistro & Bar, a French restaurant and raw bar that makes full use of Southern ingredients (regulars love the charcuterie board). At Lookout Mountain, you can behold an underground waterfall and test your nerves on one of the world’s steepest passenger railroads.

4. Wilmington, North Carolina

Christopher Boswell/Getty Images

Dawson’s Creek and other TV and film productions may have put Wilmington on the map, but there’s so much more to this lively riverfront city than Hollywood ties. Stroll the Riverwalk to the skylit Old Wilmington City Market and the rambling Cotton Exchange, a shopping and dining complex spread over several historic buildings. Get Airlie Gardens tickets in advance to see 100,000 azalea trees and a live oak dating back to the 1500s. Wrightsville Beach is 10 minutes away by car, and many other powdery island options are just a bit further. We recommend staying at Dreamers Welcome , a darling design-forward boutique hotel and vacation home.

5. New Orleans, Louisiana

Atlantide Phototravel/Getty Images

The city that gave birth to jazz, Sazeracs, poker, and po’boys, New Orleans has never lost its groove. NOLA’s staying power can be attributed to its unique architecture (a mix of French, Spanish, and Caribbean influences), pleasure-seeking spirit, and live music scene; between Tipitina’s, Preservation Hall, Chickie Wah Wah, and countless other jazz bars, you can jam to live sets pretty much every night of the year. This is one of the world’s bonafide must-visit food capitals — soak up your Hurricanes with Creole gumbo, oysters Rockefeller, muffulettas, and red beans and rice.

6. Natchez, Mississippi

John Coletti/Getty Images

Natchez, Mississippi is packed with history. Spend time at the Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture and the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians, a museum park with prehistoric Native American mounds. Riverboat gambling and annual festivals celebrating literature, film, and music are also big draws. The Natchez Trace — one of the most beautiful places in the country — kicks off here for its 444-mile journey to Nashville.

7. Asheville, North Carolina

Walter Bibikow/Getty Images

This bohemian small city in the North Carolina mountains has been a favorite getaway for over a century. The best Asheville itinerary? Eat, hike, eat again, shop indie, drink a microbrew, repeat. Seasonal and sustainable fare is front and center on local menus, with faves like Rhubarb, Sovereign Remedies, and Cucina 24 making the most of the Appalachian bounty. To work off a meal (and build your appetite back up for the next), try Craggy Pinnacle, a hike popular for the amazing views from its summit, especially when the mountains are ablaze with turning leaves in fall.

8. Hot Springs, Arkansas

Sean Pavone/Getty Images

You might think everything you need to know about Hot Springs is right there in the name. Yes, you’re probably here to “take the waters” in Hot Springs National Park . Yet there are also plenty of non-aquatic activities like hiking (including the 26 miles of trails throughout the national park), exploring the lovely Garvan Woodland Gardens, going on a self-guided downtown Art Deco tour, and more.

9. Charleston, South Carolina

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

If Southern hospitality had an absolute epicenter, it’d be Charleston, South Carolina . The city is the real deal in one walkable package, known for candy-colored homes fronted by palmettos and lush gardens shaded by oaks. Yet the city isn’t exactly frozen in time; Charleston’s culinary and shopping scenes are very much of the here and now, and there's always a new hotel to check out.

10. Louisville, Kentucky

If you like baseball, bourbon, bluegrass, and yes, horses, Louisville is for you. Hop on the bourbon trail at Stitzel-Weller Distillery, a historic distillery now offering tastings, mixology classes, and more. Then trade the malty aroma of local distilleries for the fresh greenery of Central Park or the cool air of Louisville Mega Caverns, where you can go on an underground zip line 100 feet above the canyon floor. Bed down at museum hotel 21c or the Grady Hotel, a swanky new boutique hotel in an 1883 building whose former tenants included the original designer for Kentucky Derby hats.

11. Bryson City, North Carolina

J Dabler/Getty Images

The town of Bryson City, North Carolina may be small (population: 1,500), but it's big on outdoor fun. Sitting just south of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Bryson City is a charming little mountain hub for hiking (the national park’s Deep Creek Trail is a favorite), horseback riding, zip lining, brewery-going, and scenic-steam-train-riding. A required stop is The Bistro at the Everett Hotel , right on the town’s main square; the local trout cakes and meatloaf make a welcome meal after a big day in the great outdoors.

12. Nashville, Tennessee

The Nashville renaissance shows no sign of slowing down. Neon-lit honky-tonks partying 'til the wee hours, country superstars taking the Grand Ole Opry stage, a booming food landscape encompassing everything from closely guarded hot-chicken recipes and venerable shrines to Southern cooking to James Beard Award-winning kitchens — Nashville’s star just keeps getting brighter. Drop your bags at the newly revitalized Hermitage Hotel and get on the dance floor.

13. Saint Simons Island, Georgia

Getty Images/DorothyBlahnik

Drive an hour and a half south of Savannah and you find yourself on Saint Simons Island, part of Georgia’s Golden Isles chain. Mother nature runs the show here, and it’s not always easy to tell where the land ends and the water begins. Expect rivers and creeks surrounded by salt marsh, live oak trees draped with moss (best seen at Avenue of the Oaks), and knockout beaches sweeping along the Atlantic. All that nature time can be peppered with (extremely scenic) golfing, biking, fishing, and visiting an impressive slew of historic sites.

14. Amelia Island, Florida

Dan Reynolds Photography/Getty Images

Welcome to the quieter side of Florida. This sweet barrier island promises shimmering quartz beaches, towering sand dunes, peaceful bike paths, kayak-ready waterways, and a darling historic downtown area. Low-key and laid-back are a lifestyle here, though things pick up considerably during the annual car show (March), shrimp festival (April-May), and pétanque championship (November).

15. Roanoke, Virginia

WilliamSherman/Getty Images

Tucked into Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Roanoke, also known as “Star City,” is well-known in the area for its small-town charm, Appalachian heritage, and gorgeous mountain views. Mill Mountain Park is home to a zoo, wildflower garden, and hiking trails, and it's topped with a 100-foot steel-and-concrete mountaintop star, illuminated and visible for miles. From there, it’s just three miles to the antique cars and trains at the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the Rockwells and Sargents at the (free!) Taubman Museum of Art.

16. Ocracoke, North Carolina

Kevin Lucas/Getty Images

Getting to Ocracoke requires a bit of work. An island in North Carolina’s remote Outer Banks , Ocracoke is only accessible by boat or ferry, but those who make the journey are rewarded with sugar-white sands and a bustling coastal village. This is a true escape as nearly all of the island is protected by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

17. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Jon Bilous/Getty Images

Hikers, drivers, birders, backpackers, anglers, equestrians, astronomy lovers — there’s something for everyone at Shenandoah National Park. Part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the park features famous Skyline Drive, a white-knuckle mountaintop ribbon of asphalt; wooded hollows; hundreds of miles of hiking and horse-riding trails; and nearly 100 mountain fishing streams. For epic stargazing, camp or stay at the lodges near Big Meadows.

18. Macon, Georgia

The birthplace of Otis Redding and Little Richard, the adopted home of the Allman Brothers, and the hometown of country star Jason Aldean, Macon is a small town that’s made a big dent in history — musical and otherwise. It’s home to prehistoric Indigenous sites, thousands of National Register-listed buildings, and the Tubman Museum honoring African American art and culture. It’s not called the “Festival Capital of Georgia” for nothing: Events celebrating music, film, Indigenous culture, sports, and more dominate the Macon calendar.

19. Oxford, Mississippi

csfotoimages/Getty Images

Oxford is most famous for being the home of William Faulkner. For decades, the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner based his life at Rowan Oak, an 1840s Greek Revival mansion. On a self-guided tour, you can wander around the home at your leisure, seeing his typewriter and the plot outline for “A Fable” scribbled on the wall of his study. From the house, take the forested Bailey’s Woods trail to the University of Mississippi Art Museum to see works by Georgia O’Keefe and Man Ray.

20. Orange Beach, Alabama

Jim McKinley/Getty Images

As far as Gulf beach vacations go, Florida gets all the love, but check out this oft-overlooked neighboring town just over the state line. Laid-back Orange Beach offers the same unbeatable sugar-soft shoreline, plus family-friendly amusement and water parks, dolphin cruises, nature trails, championship golf, fishing excursions, and free concerts.

21. Memphis, Tennessee

In Memphis, the door is always open for barbecue lovers and music fans. The city’s Beale Street is a rowdy neon stream of flashing lights, club-hopping pedestrians (this is the one place in the state you can walk around with your drink), and the yowls of electric guitars pouring out of blues joints. Two essential Memphis stops are Sun Records, the studio where Elvis and Johnny Cash recorded, and Graceland, Elvis’ private mansion and frozen-in-time stronghold of midcentury kitsch.

22. Key West, Florida

YuriF/Getty Images

Brimming with “Floribbean” flavor, Key West in the Florida Keys is so special, it almost doesn’t feel real. This coral island 100 miles from the mainland is a sun-soaked playground of tiki drinks, bike rides, Cuban sandwiches, key lime pies, and quirky Bahamian-inspired cottages. It’s where Tennessee Williams said he worked best, where Ernest Hemingway came from Paris to “dry out his bones” (and then remained for nearly a decade), and from where the first international passenger flight was made when Pan American Airways jetted seven riders to Havana in 1928. Today, the airline’s former headquarters is the sort of easy-breezy restaurant and bar where you could while away an afternoon with fish tacos and a key lime margarita.

23. Washington, D.C.

Zach Frailey/Getty Images

Monuments and museums (and for a few fleeting weeks in spring, cherry blossoms) may be what get you there, but once you see how rich D.C.’s cultural offerings are, you might just want to extend your stay. Walker-friendly neighborhoods like Georgetown and Dupont Circle, hiking and picnicking at Rock Creek Park, and a surprisingly hip nightlife and food scene are just some of the surprises the town has up its sleeve.

24. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Megan Nash/Getty Images

From Gatlinburg’s distilleries and amusement parks to Great Smoky Mountain National Park’s waterfalls and wildlife, this neck of the woods is a destination with no equal. It makes an excellent family getaway, packed with kid-friendly trails, park activities, and attractions ranging from the Ripley’s aquarium to the Mountain Farm Museum across the border in North Carolina that gives a glimpse into what mountain life was like a century ago.

25. Charleston, West Virginia

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

The spirit of the Appalachian Mountains is strong in Charleston. This former frontier town and state capital has more travelers discovering its mountain charms. See what’s fresh at the Capitol Market and fill your bags with wine, cheese, and honey; chase all kinds of outdoor pursuits in Kanawha State Forest; and hit U.S. Route 60 for a corkscrew drive through jaw-dropping scenery.

Pick any town below the Mason-Dixon line, and you're destined to find old-fashioned Southern hospitality and charm—not to mention tons of delicious comfort food and stunning architectural eye candy. But here's the thing: You've already done the whole Nashville thing, you've seen Charleston more times than you can count, and you've eaten your weight in beignets down in New Orleans too. Where else can you find loads of culture, entertainment, shopping, and opportunities for relaxation in the South?

While bigger cities usually get all the love (and listen, you don't have to tell us twice why they're awesome!), we think it's high time to look beyond the usual suspects and escape to quirkier gems. Looking for something outdoorsy and artsy with a killer small town main street ? Knoxville, Tennessee, or laid-back Lexington, Kentucky, might be your spots. Interested in a kid-friendly trip? Head to Lake Murray, South Carolina! Here, find our favorite surprising southern destinations to book for a memorable trip with your best sidekicks.

Danville, Kentucky

Danville, Kentucky Best Weekend Getaways in the South

Looking for the ultimate small town main street? You'll find it in Danville, along with all the shops, restaurants, and galleries you could ask for. Pro tip: Sync your trip dates up with the Kentucky State BBQ Festival.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

Best Weekend Getaways in the South Hot Springs, Arkansas

You'll want to check out the springs for which this peaceful town is named, of course, but that's not where the relaxing vibes end. Hot Springs also offers multiple wellness clubs, spas, and saunas. Perfect for a weekend trip!

PLAN YOUR TRIP

Flat Rock, North Carolina

Flat Rock North Carolina Best Weekend Getaways in the South

You won't have to wonder why Flat Rock was added to the National Register of Historic Places back in 2015. This friendly town is only 30 miles away from Asheville, and it's a wonderful place to see fall foliage.

Bardstown, Kentucky

Bardstown Best Weekend Getaways in the South

Bardstown isn't just the "Bourbon Capital of the World"—though that'd be reason enough to pay this quaint locale a visit. It's also the second-oldest city in Kentucky. Take a trip to the Maker’s Mark and Jim Beam distilleries, or just check out the main square.

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

Best Weekend Getaways in the South Baysville

Seaside allure gets muddled with artistic soul in this groovy southern town that you'd probably just drive right past on your way to New Orleans if you weren't in the know (most aren't). While in town, you can relax with your posse during a restorative class at Treehouse Yoga, which offers just as much whimsical and free-flowing fun as its name might hint at.

Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Bridge, Transport, Road, Overpass, Highway, Concrete bridge, Freeway, Mountain pass, Viaduct, Infrastructure,

This is the North Carolina that small town mountain fantasies are made of. You could easily spend all day in a rocking chair, soaking up views of the lush wilderness, but we suggest hitting the road to check out the breathtaking vistas on the Blue Ridge Parkway aka "America's favorite drive." Make a pitstop at renowned Moses H. Cone Memorial Park , for a quick but memorable visit to the craft center, before heading onto Canyons for some tasty grub and unreal mountain views. Rest your weary feet at Chetola Resort —where your gang might have a hard time prying themselves away from the sauna—or at the elegantly restored Green Park Inn . (Fun fact: Margaret Mitchell spent time penning Gone With the Wind there!)

Bowling Green, Kentucky

Liqueur, Drink, Distilled beverage, Alcohol, Blond, Bar, Pub, Beer, Brown hair,

Groups looking for off-the-beaten path thrills will be more than satisfied with a weekend in this Bluegrass State prize of a town. You can finally use the word "spelunk" in everyday conversation as you tour the world's longest cave at Mammoth Cave National Park (you'd never guess you're just an hour north of Nashville!). Then, you can make the kiddos back at home jealous when you and the ladies take some classic cars for a spin at the National Corvette Museum . Finally, enjoy a fun night out at the 1869 Boyce General Store , where you can take a canning or baking class, or simply enjoy some live music at its "Pickin' on the Patio" event every other weekend in the summer. Slip into bed at the funky-yet-elegantly outfitted Kentucky Grand Hotel , which offers a cool Prohibition-era vibe .

Charlottesville, Virginia

Property, Swimming pool, Building, Estate, House, Home, Sky, Real estate, Resort, Mansion,

Nestled in central Virginia's wine country, there's a million reasons you won't want to say goodbye to the Keswick Hall & Golf Club (wine definitely being one of them, thanks to the resort's vineyard). Perhaps start your day with the 3 Bs—birdwatching, bocce ball, and badminton—and end your night in the energy-infused streets of downtown Charlottesville. Since there's likely still one or two Dave Matthews Band Crash -era devotees in your throng, raise a pint at Miller's (ask for the DMB brew), where Dave himself tended bar when the band's biggest shows were at UVA frat houses and the 900-person Trax nightclub . (And you thought you were cool because you caught them on your local amphitheater's lawn back in '97...)

Islamorada, Florida

Tree, Vacation, Sea, Tourism, Sky, Water, Beach, Ocean, Travel, Pier,

Call the luxurious and rejuvenating Cheeca Lodge Resort & Spa , located on the islands of Islamorada in the Florida Keys , home base for your next girls' getaway. (Islamorada means "purple islands," a name that will click upon arrival). There, you and the gaggle can indulge in the true joy that is the adults-only pool, book a treatment (or two) at the spa, and eat way too many sushi rolls at the resort's lauded Nikai Sushi Bar. Should you choose to take your retreat off-property, try backcountry skiffing with Bud N'Mary's for some of the best sport fishing the country has to offer.

Columbia, South Carolina

Photography, Shopkeeper, Street, City, Tourism,

Pulsing with a vibrant, artsy energy, downtown Columbia is sprinkled with enough bakeries, boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops to set the backdrop for RGMs (Really Good Memories). Remember The Andy Griffith Show ? This Palmetto State treasure emits a "Mayberry-esque" quality, despite its fast growth in recent years. Nest up at the Inn at USC where you can spend hours relaxing on the wide wrap-around porch and feeling far removed from the hustle of city life, even though you're only a few blocks from plenty of dining options and attractions, like the industrial Hunter-Gatherer Brewery and Alehouse . While in town, assemble the gals for an afternoon trip to West Columbia (it's a quick 10-minute jaunt across the river) where you'll find the Old Mill Antique Mall , a two-level historic building that houses over 75 dealers with some of the coolest antiques, furniture, and vintage finds around. After, congregate at Cafe Strudel , a zany pour-your-own coffee bar, to dish about your vintage bounty.

Fort Myers, Florida

Property, House, Coast, Sea, Shore, Coastal and oceanic landforms, Vacation, Water, Bay, Real estate,

Abandon any preconceived notions you may have about what spring break in Florida is like, and get ready to unwind on the picturesque beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel Island. Fans of the culinary arts will be excited to sink their teeth into the incredible Peruvian-Argentinian-Italian fusion at El Gaucho Inca or conquer the daunting yet delicious portions at Farmers Market Restaurant , which specializes in homey, southern cooking. Then burn off all that grub by exploring Sanibel and Captiva Islands, which offer some of the world's best shelling (and have no buildings higher than a palm tree).

Point Clear, Alabama

Property, House, Building, Home, Botany, Architecture, Estate, Garden, Tree, Real estate,

Worthy as a destination in itself, the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort in Point Clear is a gorgeous resort and spa tucked away on 550 sprawling acres along the Alabama coastline. Studded by 36 holes on its esteemed golf course and a member of the Historic Hotels of America , the hotel was founded in 1847. It now offers outdoor and indoor swimming pools, an art gallery, and daily tea-and-cookie service in the lobby. Relax at the spa before heading to the daily historic cannon- firing ceremony (seriously!). As you stroll around the nearby town of Fairhope, you'll wonder why you didn't take an extra vacation day. Oh well, Sunday Jazz Brunch awaits...

Greenville, South Carolina

Nature, Natural landscape, Water, Tree, Reflection, River, Bridge, Daytime, Waterway, Leaf,

Ah, where to start? Food seems like a good place to kick things off in this epicurean haven, anointed one of the New York Times ' top places to go in 2017 . First, there are the oldies like Grill Marks (order a boozy milkshake) and Sidewall Pizza . Then, there are the newbies, like Biscuit Head (get a Bloody Mary on the side to wash 'em down) and The Anchorage , with a focus on seasonal, local ingredients. Ward off a food coma by heading over to M.Judson Booksellers and Storytellers for a reading, or to pick up some titles for an impromptu book club with your gals. Falls Park , with its cascading waterfalls and scene-stealing gardens, seems like a good spot for the literary discussion, as do the grounds of the rustic Hotel Domestique , where you'll want to hit the hay early so you can squeeze in a group yoga class in the morning.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

Reflection, Water, Lighting, Night, Sky, Home, Tree, Evening, Harbor, Architecture,

You know a day that starts with yoga on the beach and ends with harborside drinks with your besties before catching an outdoor Miranda Lambert concert is a good one. Here's how to make that fantasy itinerary a reality in this underrated beach town: First, book a session at Glow Yoga , then reserve an outdoor table at Driftwood Bar and Grille , and finally, look up the concert schedule at The Wharf (or, time your trip for the ever-popular Hangout Music Fest ). Of course, you'll probably need a place to stay, so score rooms at Turquoise Place , which has a lazy river and a bar with some of the best Bushwackers in town. Oh, and all roads should lead to the legendary Flora-Bama at the end of the night, a beachside mega-dive with live music straddling the Florida-Alabama line in the happiest of boozy limbos.

Hendersonville, North Carolina

Yellow, Snapshot, Youth, Community, Crowd, Event, Room, Photography, Recreation, Plant,

Step aside, Asheville. This neighboring town, tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is worthy of bucket list goals, too. Satiate your hankering for a dose of the outdoors by hiking the nearby trails, or take a stroll downtown on the extra-wide sidewalks punctuated by benches, flowers and outdoor cafes. Book a few nights at the Mélange Inn and Gardens , which serves as a convenient launching pad for adventures to countryside wineries, Sierra Nevada's massive East Coast brewery, and the famed Flat Rock Playhouse , which regularly hosts Broadway shows. Another fun fact to share with your friends: The recent remake of Dirty Dancing was filmed in Hendersonville!

Jekyll Island, Georgia

Nature, Sky, Landmark, City, Town, Human settlement, Architecture, Building, Tree, Urban area,

Whisk the group away to the pristine shores of beautiful Jekyll Island, a gorgeous state park that's protected from extensive development. At the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, book a package (there's a yoga retreat; murder mystery weekends; and whiskey, wine, and wildlife adventures ... just to name a few) or build your own itinerary. Whatever you choose to do, make sure Victorian tea, a day trip to the Okefenokee Swamp Park , and a guided water tour with Turtle Tides are all on your list. The property's regional southern Georgia cuisine is so good, you should expect to go on a grits kick for weeks when you return home.

Knoxville, Tennessee

Building, Landmark, City, Town, Architecture, Human settlement, Mixed-use, Downtown, Neighbourhood, Metropolitan area,

Nashville may the first place travelers think to go when visiting the Volunteer State, but Knoxville makes for a spectacular getaway if outdoor activities are your group's thing. Start at the Adventure Center which offers moonlit paddles, disc golf, and mountain biking (among many, many more options). After working up a sweat, the city's downtown district has oodles of mouthwatering dining options, but we're partial to the idea of a welcome night feast at Knox Mason , where everyone will beg the chef for the pimento cheese recipe. After dinner, enjoy a nightcap at sophisticated speakeasy Peter Kern Library , which moonlights as a coffeehouse by day. Next, you can retreat to your chambers at The Oliver Hotel , or find music and fun in Market Square . Just don't overdo it if the plan is to wake up early for rock climbing at Big South Fork the next day...

Lake Murray, South Carolina

Water transportation, Boat, Sail, Sailing, Vehicle, Water, Sailboat, Sky, Watercraft, Sailing,

Many people don't know there's 500 miles of undisturbed shoreline less than a half-hour drive outside of downtown Columbia. Many people are missing out. At this idyllic getaway, you'll find pristine views, hidden coves, and a glassy, peaceful lake that may just be the state's best-kept secret. Visit River Runner to rent a boat or kayak, and make a day out of lazing on the water, or pitch a tent at Brickhouse Campground for a backcountry experience that offers ample opportunity to tackle trails via foot or mountain bike. Hungry? Waterfront restaurant The Rusty Anchor provides solid grub. End your days at the old-school Newberry Manor where you can peacefully count sheep before drifting off.

Lewisburg, West Virginia

Yellow, Flower, Town, Property, Neighbourhood, Spring, Residential area, Plant, Architecture, Urban area,

Picture your dream antiques-themed Pinterest board. Now picture it coming to life in the form of a small-town Appalachian town. Welcome to Lewisburg. Wander through its antique stores and galleries, like the Harmony Ridge Gallery and Robert's Antiques and Wine Shop (which houses over 600 labels of vino) before refueling on java at community gathering place, The Wild Bean . Or, spend your bonding-time staying put in one place: The Greenbrier , a sprawling historic resort which opened in 1778. If you're looking to stay closer to town, you'll be hard-pressed to find better lodging than the Historic General Lewis Inn , which offers up authentic, nostalgia-stirring southern cooking that you won't forget anytime soon.

Mobile, Alabama

House, Building, Property, Home, Mansion, Estate, Architecture, Residential area, Real estate, Tree,

If you want to laissez le bon temps rouler New Orleans-style without having to deal with crazy crowds and steep prices, consider Mobile, the birthplace of Mardi Gras in America. Spend some time moseying around the waterfront's galleries and boutiques, under a charming canopy of oak trees, before taking a quick drive to famed Bellingrath Gardens and Home . Then, ditch sea level for dinner at Dauphin's , perched high over the bay—34 stories up in the Trustmark Building, specifically—where you'll want to save plenty of room for a plate of the local Gulf shrimp. Make your home away from home The Battle House Hotel , that is steeped in Dixieland elegance.

12 Best Family Vacations in the South on a Budget

Fort Morgan in Orange Beach; Courtesy of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism

See recent posts by Karon Warren

A family vacation provides not only quality time with loved ones but also a prime opportunity for creating memories that’ll last a lifetime. However, it can be difficult to find and plan a getaway that doesn’t break the bank. Throughout the South, though, there are a variety of locations that are ideal for a budget-friendly vacation for the entire family. From beaches to mountains, outdoor recreation to indoor adventures, and everything in between, you will find more than enough to entertain both kids and adults, all without requiring a hefty wallet. These are our favorite family vacations in the South on a budget.

1. Biloxi/Gulfport, MS

These neighboring cities on the Mississippi Gulf Coast offer a lot for families, starting with, of course, the beach. This free attraction offers hours of entertainment, whether bodysurfing in the waves, building sand castles or just reading a book in the shade of an umbrella . Do you have kids (and parents!) who love trains? If so, do not miss the Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Museum in Gulfport . This free museum contains multiple model train layouts, including an entire LEGO layout. Make sure you participate in the scavenger hunts so you catch every detail. Sports fans will enjoy a game with the Biloxi Shuckers, a Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. You can score stadium seat tickets for $10, and the views are fantastic regardless of where you sit. Of course, there is so much more to do in this area, including hiking, shrimping tours, swamp tours, museums and more, not to mention fantastic food.

Recommended Hotel: Courtyard by Marriott – Gulfport Beachfront

2. Chattanooga, TN

This Tennessee city near the Tennessee-Georgia state line offers the best of both worlds: a bustling downtown surrounded by natural beauty. As such, families will find a wealth of activities that can be tailored to their vacation budget. For instance, downtown you’ll find the Tennessee Aquarium, filled with aquatic creatures from both rivers and the ocean. You’ll also find Coolidge Park, recommended by Kirsten Maxwell of Kids Are a Trip.  The park offers a carousel, water fountains for the kids to splash in, and a pavilion for seasonal events. It’s a perfect spot for a family picnic, walk or bike ride, she says. You’ll also find kid-friendly places to eat, with favorites including Tupelo Honey and Chumpies Ice Cream. Just minutes from downtown, explore the history of Chickamauga National Military Park, or take a hike on one of the park’s many trails. In addition, two of Chattanooga’s most notable attractions reside on Lookout Mountain: Ruby Falls and Rock City.

Recommended Hotel: The Chattanoogan

3. Albany, GA

Beyond Atlanta ’s vibrant downtown and Savannah ’s charming squares, Georgia overflows with cities and towns that families will love. One such destination is Albany, located off Interstate 75 in South Georgia. Right downtown, the Flint River flows through the city, providing a perfect spot for kayaking. If you want to enjoy the water from the shore, Kimberly Stroh of The Savvy Mama Lifestyle recommends exploring the Greenways Trail System. “It offers a 3-mile river walk that is walk- and bicycle-friendly,” she says. Albany attractions include the Chehaw Wild Animal Park, the Albany Civil Rights Institute, the Flint Riverquarium and the Thronateeska Heritage Center, which includes a science museum and planetarium. When it’s time to feed the masses, check out Harvest Moon for pizza, Austin’s BBQ and Oyster Bar, and Pearly’s Famous Country Cooking.

Recommended Hotel: Merry Acres Inn

4. Brevard, NC

Just 45 minutes from Asheville , this small North Carolina town is big on family-friendly activities, restaurants and accommodations. Its biggest attractions are found everywhere outside, with more than 250 waterfalls located within Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest and Dupont State Forest. Hiking to some of these waterfalls not only is a great opportunity to get the kids up and moving, but you’ll also find some lovely picnic spots along the way. If you’re visiting during the summer months, check out Sliding Rock, a natural waterslide open to tourists. Admission is just $3 per person. Another outdoor activity is biking along the Parkway Loop, with a great trail from downtown to the Pisgah Visitors Center. Carl Hedinger of NC Tripping also recommends exploring downtown, which he says is a cozy place for walking with plenty of fun places to visit. He also suggests stopping by Rocky’s Grill & Soda Shop for a hot dog and old-fashioned milkshake, as well as Hawg Wild for barbecued ribs and pulled pork.

Recommended Hotel: Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Brevard

5. Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL

Go beyond the beach in this popular family vacation spot on the Alabama Gulf Coast , and you’ll be surprised at what you find to fill your days. Stop by the Gulf State Park Nature Center to experience a free living museum of plants and animals, and follow it up with a guided nature walk. Or challenge your family to a game of disc golf at Orange Beach Disc Golf, a free 9-hole, par-27 disc golf course. At Historic Fort Morgan, learn about the area’s military history in the onsite museum before checking out the fort itself, all for $20 for two adults and two children. Bring your bikes and hit the trails at the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, which includes 27 miles of paved trails. Of course, you can always set up a spot on the beach and enjoy the sand and surf for a while. Plus, the area is ripe with family- and budget-friendly restaurants. But be sure to save a few dollars to splurge on a you-won’t-believe-this milkshake at The Yard Milkshake Bar.

Recommended Hotel: The Lodge at Gulf State Park, A Hilton Hotel

6. Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville, TN

You can’t talk family- and budget-friendly without talking about Tennessee’s Smoky Mountain trifecta. These three neighboring cities are what family vacations in the South on a budget are made of, with more than enough options to make everyone happy. For a day of hiking and picnicking, head to Great Smoky Mountains National Park . Stop at the visitors center in Gatlinburg for hiking trails, maps and more. For more exotic animals, check out the Rainforest Adventures Discovery Zoo in Sevierville . From lemurs to cockatoos to a whole range of amphibians and reptiles, this indoor attraction showcases animals large and small. For those who want some thrills and chills, budget your dollars for a day out at Dollywood and Splash Country in Pigeon Forge . The first is an amusement park full of roller coasters, entertaining shows and a dedicated play area for the littlest kids in the family. The second overflows with waterslides, a wave pool, a splash pad for toddlers and much more. There are nonstop options for family dining, as well.

Recommended Hotel: Comfort Inn Apple Valley

7. Ellijay, GA

Known as the Apple Capital of Georgia, Elljiay is located approximately 75 miles north of Atlanta in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains. The area is quite popular for outdoor recreation, such as hiking at Fort Mountain State Park, boating or fishing at Carter’s Lake, or tubing the Cartecay and Coosawattee rivers. Also known as the Mountain Biking Capital of Georgia, Ellijay is home to Mulberry Gap Mountain Bike Getaway, a great place to rent a cabin and take a guided mountain bike tour. Of course, you can’t visit Ellijay and not go to Expedition Bigfoot. Yes, it’s dedicated to the infamous creature, and features Bigfoot artifacts including footprint casts, recordings, and the world’s only Bigfoot research and tech vehicle. To feed the family, head to some of Ellijay’s popular local spots, such as Cantaberry Restaurant for fresh-made sandwiches, Charlie’s Italian Restaurant for pizza and pasta, and either MooBears Ice Cream & Hotdogs or Abby’s Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt for your favorite ice cream.

Recommended Hotel: Comfort Inn & Suites, East Ellijay

8. Greensboro, NC

When it comes to a value-filled family vacation, Greensboro delivers so much, you may find it hard to decide what to do during your trip. For instance, the Greensboro Science Center is so much more than a science museum. Sure, it has interactive science exhibits, but it also has a prehistoric section, an aquarium and outdoor zoo, all for less than $15 per person. For a little extra, you can tackle the Skywild Ropes Course. At the free Greensboro Arboretum, you can explore 17 acres of special display gardens and 14 plant collections. For younger kids, the Greensboro Children’s Museum teaches kids about different areas of life through play. These range from working in a grocery store to running the health center to sorting mail at the post office. There’s also an incredible outdoor play plaza. Across the street, LeBauer Park & Center City Park features a playground, splash pad, ornamental gardens and more.

Recommended Hotel: Wingate by Wyndham Greensboro

9. Myrtle Beach, SC

One of the cheapest beach destinations on the East Coast , Myrtle Beach continues to be a budget-friendly choice thanks to its large inventory of accommodations ( many with onsite water parks !), attractions, activities and restaurants. Spend your days playing at the beach, challenge your family to a game of mini-golf, or catch a game with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, a Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Of course, you also can check out live music at The Pier at Garden City Beach, take a free tour of the Horry County Museum and LW Paul Living History Museum, or set out on an easy hike at Vereen Memorial Gardens. Finding budget-friendly restaurants is easy as well, with choices like Ultimate California Pizza, Lucy Buffett’s Lulu’s and Blueberry’s Grill.

Recommended Hotel: South Bay Inn & Suites

10. Birmingham, AL

Alabama’s largest city, Birmingham is often overlooked as a family-friendly vacation destination, but this Southern city is home to numerous sites and attractions the whole family will enjoy. For instance, at Alabama Splash Adventure, families not only will enjoy a great selection of theme park and water park rides, but also free soft drinks, free parking, free Wi-Fi and free sunscreen! At the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, let the kids burn off some energy as you check out more than 30 themed gardens on nearly 70 acres. Becky Beall of The Travel Voice by Becky also recommends The Birmingham Zoo. Not only is it well-laid-out and clean, but it also offers a large variety of amazing animals, a Sea Lion Splash Show and a must-see section of elephants in the “Trails of Africa,” she says. And, at the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, you can set out on 10 miles of hiking trails, check out the exhibits in the nature center and enjoy a meal at the covered picnic area.

Recommended Hotel: Sheraton Birmingham

11. Concord, NC

If you and your family are fans of motorsports, Concord must be your next family vacation destination. Here you can tour numerous NASCAR race shops to get a behind-the-scenes look at teams preparing for race day—all for free. Combining a love of music and racing, the Curb Museum for Music & Motorsports documents owner Mike Curb’s two top passions. The owner and founder of the nation’s leading country music record label, Curb found great success through the years with numerous recording artists and songwriters. He also showcases a variety of race cars across motorsports. Best of all, it’s free for tours. Grab a brochure at the Visit Cabarrus welcome center and set out on The Dale Trail, a free tour where you can visit many stops that commemorate hometown hero Dale Earnhardt Sr. Even attending races at Charlotte Motor Speedway and zMAX Dragway can be affordable thanks to promotions like “Kids 13 & Under Get in Free.”

Recommended Hotel: Great Wolf Lodge Concord

12. Vero Beach, FL

Located on Florida’s Treasure Coast, Vero Beach certainly offers a lot for families on a budget to do during their vacation. For instance, stop by The McLarty Treasure Museum to learn about sunken ships, pirate booty and more. At McKee Botanical Garden, take the kids to the children’s area, which is complete with a splash fountain, suspended bamboo bridges, and a life-sized pirate shipwreck. Get closer to nature with a sea turtle walk at Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, where you can learn more about sea turtle nesting and the odds these creatures have to fight to survive. For rainy days or to cool off from the heat, head to The Vero Beach Museum of Art, where kids can participate in hands-on activities as they explore their own artistic side.

This Popular City Was Just Named the Friendliest in the U.S. South

You're guaranteed to get a warm welcome here.

Looking for a wave, a smile, and maybe even a lovely conversation or two on your next trip? Then it's time to make your way to one of our favorite cities in the South.

Southern Living revealed its list of the 15 friendliest cities in the South based on a survey of its readers that included more than 20,000 respondents.

"While we like to think that all Southern cities are just as welcoming as the next, there are a few that stand out as being extra gracious. We polled the people who know the South best (that’s you–our readers!) to find out which places have made you feel especially warm and fuzzy," Tara Massouleh McCay, senior travel editor at Southern Living , wrote about the report. After looking at all the responses, Charleston came out on top.

"What more can we say about Charleston except that there’s a reason it’s been voted as your favorite city in our annual South’s Best poll for more years in a row than we can count on one hand," McCay wrote. "It’s the quintessential Southern city. There’s beautiful architecture, excellent dining, waterfront views, quaint streets, and an indescribably welcoming spirit that just puts a smile on your face."

Indeed, it's a favorite among Travel + Leisure readers, too, winning the top spot in the World's Best Awards' favorite cities in the U.S. category for 11 years in a row . In 2022, the city also gained a spot in our WBA Hall of Fame . (Also, if you didn't know, we're throwing a major party in Charleston in September, alongside Southern Living and Food & Wine for the first-ever Food & Wine Classic in Charleston. Here's how to get your tickets to join us .)

But Charleston isn't the only friendly city in the South. It was joined at the top of the list by Savannah, Georgia, at the No. 2 spot, followed by Greenville, South Carolina; New Orleans; and Nashville, Tennessee; rounding out the top five. Check out the entire list of friendliest cities here , and when you're ready for more, read up on Southern Living 's list of the 20 friendliest towns in the South , too.
