James Bond Island: How To Visit Phang Nga Bay In Thailand

Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay is loaded with exotic island scenery, and one of the best things to see in the bay would have to be the famous James Bond Island, with its unusual balanced rock.

Also known as Nail Island or ‘Ko Ta Pu’ in the Thai language, James Bond Island got its current nickname when the location was featured in the 1974 Bond movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun.’

Nowadays, Phang Nga Bay is a national park in Thailand where you can go kayaking and see dozens of amazing islands with caves, mangroves, wildlife, and even a floating village called Koh Panyee.

It’s easy to visit Phang Nga Bay on a day trip (by boat) from Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Lak, and that gives you enough time to see James Bond Island and the other main sights in the bay.

This travel guide for Phang Nga Bay will explain how to get there, top things to see and do, best tour packages to use, where to stay, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Best Phang Nga Bay Tour Packages

The only way to visit James Bond Island is with a tour, and GetYourGuide has prearranged day tours from Phuket or similar day trips from Khao Lak or Krabi , complete with hotel transfers, boat ride, lunch, shared tour of the islands, and same day return.

These day tours visit all of the top sights in Phang Nga Bay, including James Bond Island, Hong island, and the Koh Panyee floating village, and you can also use a canoe or kayak to explore some of the limestone caves up close.

They also have private tours or semi-private tours if you prefer that, although the prices are higher. We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where Is James Bond Island?

James Bond Island is located in Phang Nga Bay, in southern Thailand.

There’s no airport, hotels, or accommodation in the bay since it’s a national park, but you can easily visit from other places in Thailand.

How To Get To James Bond Island Thailand

The only way to get to James Bond Island is to book a tour of Phang Nga Bay by boat. You can choose between a Thai longtail boat, big wooden boat, or speedboat, and any of these are good options.

The speedboat is fastest and you’re usually in a smaller and more private tour group, but it costs more. We’ve done the James Bond Island tour with all kinds of boats, and always had a good experience with each of them.

The closest place to fly for this is the international airport in Phuket (HKT) or the one in Krabi (KBV). Both of these airports have cheap flights from Bangkok. You can shop for flights to Thailand on Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of boat companies making the trip to James Bond Island daily from Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Lak, and they usually include hotel pickup and drop-off. Again, we recommend GetYourGuide for their shared or private tours !

The boat journey through Phang Nga Bay is stunning in its own right, with dozens of rocky islands rising out of the sea in all directions. However, one of the best parts of the trip is kayaking through the limestone caves. It’s probably one of the most amazing kayaking experiences I’ve had anywhere in the world!

Visiting James Bond Island: What To Expect

When you first arrive at James Bond Island, the boat will park on the back side of the main island (Khao Phing Kan) and then you can disembark and walk around on the island for awhile.

Khao Phing Kan is a very unusual island covered with limestone hills, and the main attraction is the pointy balanced rock, which seems to float on the sea. Unlike other places in Thailand, the snorkeling isn’t any good at Phang Nga Bay because the water is murky and there’s no coral.

However, if you’re lucky, you still might see some wildlife here. We saw a hawk flying around, and later on we spotted a baby monitor lizard near the beach. We took a few pictures of him before he climbed a tree and disappeared.

Most Phang Nga tour packages give you 1 hour at James Bond Island, which is plenty of time to swim at the beach, see the famous floating rock, and attempt your best James Bond pose for photos.

The floating rock — Ko Ta Pu — also known as Nail Island

Of course, because of its scenery, James Bond Island has become one of the most famous spots in Thailand, so it’s very crowded with tourists at most times of the day unless you arrive early in the morning.

There are a bunch of makeshift souvenir stalls on the island taking advantage of this, but the prices are a bit higher than normal so it’s not a good idea to do any shopping here.

If you want to escape the crowds and take some nice pictures, you can walk up the concrete steps and there are usually less people at the viewpoints above the rock, while the area close to the beach always tends to be the busiest and most crowded part of the island.

James Bond Island was popularized and got its current nickname after being featured as the villain’s hideout in the 1974 Bond movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun.’ The movie bombed with critics, but the location became a hit.

In spite of the crowds, we were happy to see that the island has been kept pretty clean, and we didn’t notice any garbage on the ground or in the water. Overall, it’s an amazing place and you have to see it at least once!

Visiting Phang Nga Bay – Tourist Fees

The Phang Nga Bay is a national park in Thailand, so they charge a tourist fee of 300 Baht (~$9 USD) for adults, and 150 baht for kids 3-14 years old.

Some Phang Nga Bay tours may already include these fees in the total price when you book, but usually you pay them separately in cash when you first start the tour, or else when you get off the boat at James Bond Island.

More Things To See In Phang Nga Bay

Here’s a list of some of the top sights in Phang Nga Bay. You can see most of these places (along with James Bond Island) in a single day tour:

  • Koh Hong Island: Not to be confused with the Koh Hong island in the Krabi province, this is a beautiful island in Phang Nga with a sandy beach and several limestone caves that you can explore by kayak. It’s one of the most spectacular kayaking spots in Thailand, so don’t miss it!
  • Koh Phanak Island: Another big limestone island with several caves, including the Bat Cave and Ice Cream Cave, which got its name from the bright white stalactite rocks inside. You can also see mangroves and wild monkeys here.
  • Koh Panyee Floating Village: A very interesting little fishing village with a population of about 1,700 people. This floating village was founded about 200 years ago by Malay muslims, and the spot often serves as a lunch stop on James Bond boat tours.
  • Samet Nangshe Viewpoint : This amazing viewpoint is technically located outside of the national park, and you can only visit it by land (not on the James Bond boat tour). However, it has jaw dropping views of Phang Nga Bay, along with its many mangroves and islands. It’s one of the best views I’ve seen anywhere in the world, and the sunrise is also impressive. I wrote a separate travel guide for this viewpoint, which you can read here !

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint can only be reached by land (not on the James Bond boat tour), but it has incredible views of Phang Nga Bay.

1-Day Itinerary For The James Bond Island Tour

Here’s a sample itinerary for what the James Bond Island tour generally looks like:

  • 7:30 AM – Hotel pickup and drive to the pier by bus or minivan
  • 8:30 AM – Transfer to boat and start the journey to Phang Nga Bay
  • 9:30 AM – Start sightseeing in Phang Nga Bay
  • 12:00 PM – Lunch at the boat or on the floating village (Koh Panyee)
  • 1:00 PM – More sightseeing in Phang Nga Bay
  • 5:00 PM – Arrive at the pier and transfer back to your hotel by bus or minivan

Keep in mind every tour is different, so your schedule may not follow this exactly. You can check with your tour provider about the itinerary before you go.

Is James Bond Island Open / Closed?

Yes, James Bond Island is OPEN for tourists as of 2024!

The Thai government likes to close some of their islands for conservation during the rainy season, but Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island generally stays open all year.

Best Time To Visit James Bond Island Thailand

Any time is good to visit James Bond Island, although there are some seasonal differences.

The weather in the Andaman Sea area of Thailand (including Phang Nga Bay) is best from November to April, when it’s more dry and sunny. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so it’s a bit more crowded with day tours.

The weather is not as good from May to October. There are more rainy days, and there are frequent storms in the evenings. However, there are less tourists in these months and it’s still possible to have a great trip.

It’s very unusual for boat tours to be canceled at James Bond Island because it’s inside of a large bay that protects it from rough waves coming from the sea.

We witnessed some big storms in the rainy season, but these were usually in the evenings when we were back at our hotel, so it wasn’t a problem. Most of the pictures in this James Bond Island travel guide were actually taken in July, during the rainy season.

We’ve visited Phang Nga Bay in the dry season and also in the rainy season, on separate trips. In both cases, we had an amazing time and the weather was mostly great for weeks.

So in conclusion, there’s really no bad time to visit James Bond Island!

What To Bring To Phang Nga Bay

Here are some packing suggestions for your visit to James Bond Island Thailand:

  • Waterproof Bag . Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats around Ko Ta Pu and Koh Hong island. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch . Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Sunscreen. There is usually some shade in the speedboats and longtail boats, but you can still get roasted while swimming or walking on the beach at Ko Ta Pu, so you’ll want to bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat tours.
  • Snacks & Drinks. You might want to pack some snacks and drinks in the boat when touring the islands. You can bring these from Phuket or Krabi. There are also snacks and drinks available to buy in the national park, but the prices are higher.

See the tiny boat in the bottom left corner?

Can You Fly A Drone At Phang Nga Bay?

Yes and no. Thailand is pretty relaxed about drones, and you can fly them in most of the islands, but you aren’t allowed to fly in the national parks.

That includes James Bond Island, which is patrolled by park rangers who will fine you if you’re caught flying a drone. They’re especially strict there, and the rangers are watching all areas of the island constantly.

However, if you’re discreet it’s still possible to fly from other locations in or near the bay. The best place to do this is at the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint , which has great visibility of Phang Nga Bay. You’ll still want to be considerate and only fly in places where it won’t bother people, of course.

Other Tips For Phang Nga Bay

  • Bathrooms: There are bathrooms on James Bond Island, although you may have to pay a small fee in Thai baht (bring some cash for that). If you book the tour with a big wooden boat, those also have toilets in the boat, although the Thai longtail boats and speedboats usually do not.
  • Cell Service: We had good phone reception on the boat while touring all over Phang Nga Bay, but you may lose signal when you go ashore on James Bond Island because of the steep mountains surrounding Ko Ta Pu.
  • Mosquitoes: We didn’t really see any mosquitoes in Phang Nga Bay or James Bond Island, but you can buy bug repellent in Phuket, Krabi, or other places in Thailand if you want it. Malaria isn’t present in this area.

Phi Phi Or James Bond Island: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Phi Phi or James Bond Island? That’s an important question.

They’re both great, but I have to say Phi Phi island is better. No offense to James Bond island, but Phi Phi has the best scenery above and below the ocean, with clear blue water and lots of fish and coral to see while snorkeling or scuba diving.

There’s also more to see and do in Phi Phi overall. Even if you don’t care about snorkeling, it’s hard to beat Maya Bay , Pileh Lagoon, and the other epic sights in the Phi Phi islands. They are truly world class.

Don’t get me wrong, Phang Nga Bay is still amazing and you should definitely see James Bond island if you’re able. Try to see both Phi Phi and James Bond if you have time! Unfortunately you can’t see them both in one day since they’re located in opposite directions from Phuket (north vs south), but it’s possible to see both places in two days!

Is James Bond Island Worth It?

Yes, James Bond Island is absolutely worth it in my book! There is loads of amazing scenery in Phang Nga Bay, and the prices for everything are very affordable.

In spite of the crowds, this is still one of the best day trips in Thailand, and it’s very accessible because of its location between Phuket and Krabi.

Planning Your Trip to James Bond Island – Koh Tapu / Koh Phing Khan

“Mr Bond, bullets do not kill. It is the finger that pulls the trigger.”

If so, there are two possibilities: you’re a baby boomer or generation X, or you’ve sat in front of the TV with your dad and seen the 1974 James Bond classic (The Man With The Golden Gun) by accident.

If you’re a Bond fan and flying to Thailand for a holiday, then no doubt you will want to add James Bond Island to your itinerary.

Aside from it being one of the filming locations in The Man with the Golden Gun, staring Roger Moore and Christopher Lee, the area is of vast natural beauty.

So, where is it, how do you get there and what is there to do?

james-bond-island

Where is James Bond Island?

The island, formerly known as Koh Tapu, which means Nail Island – thanks to its spiky shape – is a popular landmark in Phang Nga Bay.

Phang Nga Bay lies between southern Thailand's mainland and Phuket Island. Also known as Ao Phang Nga National Park, it is characterised by limestone cliffs and rock formations, as well as mangrove forests and small islands.

Before the 1974 movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’, no one outside of Thailand knew of the island.

Now, both Koh Tapu and the island next door, Koh Phing Khan, which translates to ‘hills leaning against each other’, are referred to as James Bond Island by locals and foreigners alike.

Although the islands in this area can get really crowded with tourists and longboats, particularly in peak season, its picturesque scenery and pristine emerald waters make it a worthwhile trip.

How to Get to James Bond Island from Bangkok

It really depends on your travel plans. If you have already planned to stay in Phuket, that's fine. Just join a tour or hire a private boat from Phuket. Phang Nga is about 45 Km away.

But Phang Nga is closest and the surrounding area is very beautiful; you won't regret staying there. It borders the Andaman Sea on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula.

Staying on Phang Nga means you can also visit the national park and surrounding islands on other days.

Don't try and do a one or two day trip from Bangkok though. It simply wouldn't be worth it. Check out the various travel options and prices for getting to Phang Nga from Bangkok below.

Island Tour Options

Before garnering international fame, James Bond Island was difficult to get to. Now, the island is tourist attraction and must-visit for both Bond addicts and non-fans.

Depending on how you want to spend your time in the area, there are three ways/options to get there.

1. Half Day Tour:

If you wish to spend a whole afternoon on the island, it’s best to get a full-day James Bond Island tour – offered by numerous travel agencies.

Usually included is a convenient hotel pickup and lunch. You'll travel by traditional longboat or speedboat, depending on your budget.

You'll then spend the entire afternoon unlocking the gems that are Koh Phing Khan and Koh Tapu.

2. Full Day Tour:

If you want to visit multiple islands in a day, you can avail a full-day excursion to Ao Phang Nga National Park and Phang Nga Bay where James Bond Island and other equally beautiful islands are found.

You”ll stop at the Talu and Naka islands for opportunities to enjoy the scenery, swim, and canoe.

By speedboat gives you the most for your money: You'll see more than 100 islands, including James Bond Island, with their epic limestone cliffs and clear waters.

Cave and kayak before rounding up your journey by enjoying the sun or swimming in the cool emerald Andaman waters.

3. Private Longboat Hire

If you’re travelling with a large group, or want to have more freedom to roam, renting a long-tail boat from Surakul Pier in Phang Nga is an option.

A boat can carry a maximum of ten and costs less than £50 for three to four hours. Not bad if you split the bill.

Top Things to Do on James Bond Island

James Bond Island is a top attraction in Thailand, so while the view is literally breathtaking, it does get flooded with tourists.

If you want to witness the island’s beauty in isolation and take pictures without photo-bombers, be sure to begin your day early. Get up at the crack of dawn and hire a private long boat.

The island is under national park protection, which means that boats are required to stay at a safe distance from the island.

To get the best view of James Bond Island, you can either stay in your boat or go to a small beach on Koh Phing Khan.

Aside from taking pictures, take advantage of the chance to explore Koh Phing Khan. On the outside, this island looks like an epic, high leaning rock, but the magic starts once you begin to explore its small caves. Super fun.

Koh Phing Khan’s eastern beach is a little crowded, with stalls selling souvenirs made from seashells and wood. It is always worth supporting the locals, though, so take something home for a loved one.

James Bond Island is also a major destination for sailing and kayaking. So if that's your thing you can book a tour with that in mind.

Other Activities Around the Island

Once you've seen the film locations and trigger-posed for 10 selfies, the whole James Bond novelty will wear off pretty quickly.

My advice is that you make a day of it and visit the other islands of Phang Nga Bay, either as part of a tour or through the hiring of a longboat (with captain).

I prefer the latter because I get to go at my own pace. I remember one boat tour I took off Samui. We saw lots but always seemed to be getting ready to go to the next destination. I think less is more in this situation.

I'd rather hang out and fully appreciate three islands than see 10 and hardly take anything in.

Here are some activities you can consider:

  • Koh Panyi: It's a Muslim fishing village which strangely hosts the world's only floating football pitch.
  • Elephant trekking at Phang Nga Elephant Park: I don't recommend this. Read here why and what to do instead.
  • Tham Suwan Kuha Temple: Aside from being a functioning place of worship for local Buddhists, this temple is also a tourist destination featuring a complex of caves. At the entrance, expect to find a troop of monkeys, always on the lookout for food handouts.
  • Kayaking around Phang Nga Bay caves and lagoons: Phang Nga Bay is home to numerous caves and lagoons.
  • Swimming and snorkelling in Hong Island: Dreamlike waters, a fine white-sand beach and impressive limestone formations. Get your snorkelling gear and marvel at a wide variety of colourful fish.

If you're a Bond fan James Bond Island is a must-do. If you're not fussed about The Man With The Golden Gun it's still an area of natural beauty you'll want to visit.

Phuket Tour Guide

Getting there.

Phuket is an island, though it seems to be a much easier island to access than many others in the world. The vast majority of visitors simply arrive through Phuket International Airport, located around 24 miles from the city center.

It’s usually cheaper to fly into Bangkok, however, so if you’d like to see Bangkok you may just want to allot a day or two there. From there, you can simply take the train from Hua Lamphong Station to Surat Thani and then take a bus to Phuket. You should not miss Bangkok, we would recommend a tour of the city .

Getting Around

Phuket is pretty simple to navigate, thank goodness. You’ll find many varying private and public transportation options. If you’re staying in a resort area, you may just be able to walk around without even thinking of 3 rd -party transportation.

Tuk-Tuk – These are unique to a lot of people, and the experience can be a fun one. However, they’re more ideal for shorter journeys, due to their small size and rather bumpy ride at times. Not only that, but if you’re in a resort area like Patong, they can get kind of pricey. Make sure you agree upon a rate before heading off.

Taxis/Grab – Taxis are pretty much everywhere around Phuket, but particularly in tourist spots and resort areas. Metered taxis are also located right outside the main entrance/exit at the airport. For the first 2 km, fares will be 50 baht and around 8 baht for each km after that. If you’re going long distances, try to settle on a flat rate beforehand.

There is no Uber here, but instead “Grab”. This app-based service is preferred by many visitors as it’s more reliable and gives you more of a sense of security as your ride is tracked and your rate is already settled.

Buses – Known as “songtaews”, these open-air buses are bright blue and easy to spot. The cool thing is they even write the destinations in English if you don’t speak Thai. Just be prepared to be able to flag one down, as there are no established bus stops. Buses operate from around 7 am to 6 pm, and are very affordable.

Motorbike – If you’re brave enough, you may just choose to rent a motorbike. 50-cc Hondas and big bikes are the most common type, and are very cheap. However, you need to know that many drivers operate with complete disregard for the laws and others on the road. Not only that, but if it’s a wet season, roads can become very slippery and difficult to navigate.

Motorbike Taxis – If you are going to hop on a motorbike, you may be better off with a local driving it for you. They are familiar with the way other locals drive, the weather conditions, and so on. This makes it much safer and more reliable. You can find them at moto taxi stands, usually with the drivers wearing red or green vests.

Where to Stay

Phuket may be an island, but it’s one of the more lively islands in Thailand. However, whether you’re going to party or to vacation as a family, there’s something for everyone. Each beach has a different vibe to it!

Phuket Town – If you’re going for the sightseeing and absorbing the culture more than anything, just stay here. You’ll be able to access some of the most popular attractions like the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong Temple, and elephant sanctuary. Not only that, but it’s easy to walk to hotels, temples, markets, and restaurants.

Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon – If your main priority is seeing the amazing beaches, then stay in any of these areas. Patong is one of the main beaches, but is usually very overcrowded while many others are uncomfortable and not quite as beautiful.

However, these 3 are all located inside a national park. They have beautiful white sands, gorgeous views, and have a more private feel to them. Nai Yang is notorious for being so close to the airport runway that you feel like you could almost reach out and touch the airplanes! Kata is another honorable mention, with some of the best swimming on the island.

Bang Tao – Bang Tao is perfect if you are a water sport kind of person. That could mean jet-skiing, going out on a speedboat, parasailing, etcetera. If you’re into receiving top-notch spa treatments, Bang Tao is also the way to go. If you’re feeling sore, you can’t skip receiving a massage here.

Patong – Patong is the center of nightlife and all the hustle-and-bustle of Phuket. You’ll find clubs bumping with loud music, all kinds of “entertainment complexes”, and extravagant shows. If you’re coming with the entire family, you may want to steer clear of staying in this area, though.

Kata Yai, Kata Noi – Are you a serious foodie? Then you should be staying in either of these areas. You’ll find everything from world-class bistros to makeshift stalls at the beach serving up delicious dishes. Whatever you’re looking for as far as food goes, you’ll find it here.

Restaurants and Eating Out

As we just mentioned, Phuket has a variety of tasty food options and there really is something for everyone. With that being said, we recommend trying both formal restaurants and food stalls for best results.

One Chun Café and Restaurant – Located in Old Town, this restaurant is consistently rated as one of the best on the island. With a wide variety of dishes (try the crab yellow curry), it has a very vintage feel with brick walls and all kinds of old clocks and TV sets!

Raya – Okay, so this is from the same owners as One Chun, but it just can’t be left out! Known for their classic local dishes like moo hong or slow-cooked pork belly stew, they really take their time in making sure each dish is served to perfection. It’s located right around the corner from One Chun, too!

Ko Ang Seafood – This place has been around a long time, and is known for being one of the best seafood spots in Old Town. You’ll find everything from popular dishes to exotic options like red ant eggs or horseshoe crab.

Lock Tien Food Court – If you go to Phuket, you have to make a visit to Lock Tien. It’s been serving up delicious food for over 50 years to locals and tourists, alike. Located on the corner of Dibuk and Yoawarat, you can try a delicious traditional dinner like por pia, or a cool dessert like oh aew. O-aew is a Thai shaved ice dessert topped with many ingredients like red bean, grass jelly, and of course o-aew: a type of jelly made with banana and herbs.

Kwong Shop Seafood – Here’s another prime seafood spot, and if you’re in Kata Beach, we highly recommend stopping by. Crab curry, hot pot, steamed squid, entire fish – they have it all and it’s super cheap for the quality and quantity received.

Sugar & Spice – This place melds western dishes with Thai favorites like pad Thai, pineapple rice, and som tam. It’s not all that exciting, but it’s a good option if you or another in your group isn’t that adventurous with food.

Nightlife and Entertainment

  • Soi Bangla Road – This place goes crazy after the sun sets! You’ll find all kinds of lavish clubs to sophisticated lounges and everything in-between.
  • Wassa Homemade – Located right on the coast, this is a wonderful date night spot if you’re looking for chill music, great conversation, and excellent cocktails. The views are unbeatable, and the service is fantastic.
  • Seductino Nightclub – This trendy spot is a massive club, with famous DJs every night.
  • Simon Cabaret – One of the most popular places in Phuket, it has great digital sound and visual effects.
  • Siam Niramit – This is undoubtedly one of the most unique shows on the island, and has an almost Vegas-esque feel to it. If you’re bringing the whole family along, this is one of the top recommendations. Complete with over 100 performers, glamorous costumes, and elaborate sets, there’s never a dull moment.
  • Boat Bar – This is a fun place with friendly staff, cool decorations, great music, cabaret some nights, and more.
  • Kee Sky Lounge – This rooftop bar is just steps away from Bangla Walking Street. The rooftop is designed to look like a cruise ship deck, and is always fun with great cocktails and views of the Andaman Sea.
  • Kudo Beach Club – Okay, so this club does open at 10 am, but it goes until midnight so you always have a party to go to!

Generally speaking, Phuket is quite warm throughout the entire year. Temperatures range from around 77 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit, and seasons are pretty much just divided into the “rainy season” and “dry season”. These periods depend on the tropical monsoon.

Dry season starts in December, lasting until around March. You’ll see clear skies, calm waters, and light breezes with temperatures in the high 70s, typically. As you can imagine, this attracts a lot of tourists and is known as the high season.

Rainy season starts in June and lasts until October. This is when the monsoon comes in, with intense winds, lots of rain, with hot and humid weather. It’s not quite as pleasant, considering many times you won’t be able to be out on the water. Going to the beach may result in sand blowing all over, and raining you out.

Attractions

Kata Noi Beach – Phuket has a ton of great beaches, but Kata Noi remains one of our favorites. It’s small in size but huge in beauty. Take a walk along the pristine sand while just enjoying the view or taking a swim in the water.

Chalong Bay Rum Distillery – If you’re a rum fan, you’ll love learning about how it is produced. Not to mention, after the tour you get to participate in a cocktail workshop and bar, where you’ll learn how to make various cocktails that include the house rum.

Big Buddha – This is an absolutely massive marble Buddha statue, at almost 150 feet tall! While the Buddha alone is a great motive for heading there, you also get some of the best panoramic views of the island from the top of the hill.

Nai Harn Beach – This is one of the most popular beaches, with soft white sand and crystal-clear blue water. There are many delicious restaurants nearby, so we recommend grabbing a bite to eat and then coming to sit under the shade of a large tree on the beach.

Karon Viewpoint – Right next to Kata Noi is Karon Viewpoint, which offers some of the best lookout points on the whole island.

Phuket Town Weekend Night Market – The locals call it “Maka Market”, and is the place to be at night on the weekends! It’s crowded with tourists and locals, yes, but there are so many delicious foods and fun items to purchase and look at here.

Wat Chalong and Phuket Temples – Wat Chalong is one of the most important temples in Phuket, with incredible intricacy and a fascinating history. It’s gorgeous from a distance, but head closer and you’ll see the innumerable pieces of glittering glass.

Bangla Road – It’s definitely unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, so prepare yourself for that! But if you are ready for adventure and have a sense of humor, you’ll be just fine.

Phi Phi Islands – If you have seen the movie, The Man With The Golden Gun you will recognize this area. The Phi Phi Islands are definitely worth taking a tour of.

  • Don’t drink the tap water. Just drink bottled water, and make sure that the bottle is sealed. Ice is made with clean water, and you don’t have to worry about it.
  • Bring mosquito repellent or purchase some right when you arrive. Dengue and malaria aren’t that common, but it’s still annoying to be itching the entire time.
  • When at temples, you need to be respectful. Cover your shoulders and legs at least to the knee. Remove shoes and hat before entering any temple.
  • Be respectful of any image of Buddha. Buying statues and/or getting Buddhist tattoos if you aren’t Buddhist is not only considered very disrespectful, but in some cases, even illegal!
  • Public criticism of Thai royalty is illegal, and if the national anthem is played in public or even before a movie in the theater, you should stand.

Guide to The Famous James Bond island and Need to Know Secrets

There aren’t many movie franchises that are as successful and well-known as the James Bond franchise. Since 1953, James Bond has had an incredible history, with scenes shot in the most beautiful places in the world, including Thailand. Out of the 24 James Bond movies, two were filmed in Thailand: Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) .

One of the most famous scenes in The Man with the Golden Gun is when Scaramanga proposes a pistol duel with Bond on the beach, and the two men stand back to back with this big limestone islet coming out of the water in the background. This islet is Koh Tapu, more famously known as James Bond Island. In this guide, we will focus on James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay.

Why is it called James Bond Island?

Koh Khao Phing Kan, otherwise known as Khao Phing Kan, is a small island that played host to the James Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”. Shot in 1974, this movie highlighted the beautiful 20-meter-tall limestone islet, called Koh Ta Pu which is around 40 meters off the shore of Khao Phing Kan. Koh Ta Pu means Crab Eye Island.

A long time ago, Koh Ta Pu was originally a part of the Koh Khao Phing Kan but has been, over time, scoured out by the tide and then separated from the mainland. As soon as the movie came out, the islet became world-famous.

This fame brought many people to Thailand and Khao Phing Kan Island. Due to the popularity of the James Bond film, people started calling it James Bond Island. Since then, tourists only know it as James Bond Island, and it has become a prominent tourist attraction in Thailand.

Many people aren’t sure where the island is with many thinking it’s located in Phuket, which isn’t correct. James Bond Island is situated in Phang Nga Bay in southern Thailand. Phang Nga Bay is a national park called Ao Phang Nga National Park located just northeast of Phuket.

Phang Nga Bay itself is a shallow bay with 42 islands, mangroves, caves, and lagoons. James Bond Island is the main attraction, but there are many other things to see and do in the bay.

Tours to James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay

There are many tours to Phang Nga Bay that include James Bond Island along with a few other activities in Phang Nga Bay. These tours usually depart from either a pier in Phang Nga or from Phuket.

Most tourists who visit James Bond Island come from Phuket. There are a wide variety of tour companies that do daily tours. The tours are split into two groups based on how you get to the bay: speedboat and ferry.

Both tours are generally the same, but we recommend taking the ferry as it’s slower and gives you a better view of the bay as you approach it. It also provides you with the ability to take beautiful pictures, which you won’t get on a speedboat.

There are many tour companies to choose from; however, all the tours are very similar. Program Itineraries normally go as follows:

  • Pick up from your hotel
  • Depart from the pier.
  • Sightseeing and exploring Panak Island.
  • Canoeing at the Bat Cave or Hong Island.
  • Swim and relax at Lana Island or Naka Island.
  • Have lunch on the boat if you take the ferry or have lunch at Panyee Island if you are taking the speedboat.
  • Visit James Bond Island and Khao Ping Kan Island for pictures.
  • And depending on the tour you can also visit Ice Cream Cave or Diamond Cave.
  • Head back to the pier.

We recommend choosing a tour that does kayaking on Hong Island. It’s beautiful and there are many caves and rock formations to see by Hong Island that will add great value to your trip.

Before you book a tour, ask them if it includes the national park fee. If it doesn’t then you have to pay the national park fee at Khao Ping Kan island.

The National Park fee: Foreigners 300 baht for Adults, 100 baht for Children between 3 and 14 years old. Thai locals 60 baht for Adults and 30 baht for Children.

Most of the time these tours can cost anything from 2000 baht to 3200 baht and most of the time include the national park fees.

Getting a tour from Phang Nga is a little bit more difficult than Phuket. Some hotels offer tours but many don’t. Luckily, many piers are easy to find that offer tours to Phang Nga Bay. All tours from here are on longtail boats which we love. Most piers offer two tours:

  • James bond Island
  • Pingkan Mountain
  • Pan-Yee island
  • James Bond Island
  • Nok Krarian Cave
  • Hong island

We chose tour B since it includes kayaking by Hong Island.

These tours from Piers in Phang Nga Bay cost 2000 baht per boat with a maximum of 4 people per boat. The tours don’t include the national park fee and the kayaking fee which you pay once you arrive.

The National Park fee: Foreigners 300 baht for Adults, 100 baht for Children between 3 and 14 years old. Thai locals 60 baht for Adults and 30 baht for Children. The kayaking fee at Hong Island was 300 baht per person.

Our Experience with Tour B

On our tour, our first stop was James Bond Island and Pingkan Mountain. We were lucky to get there early because there weren’t that many people there. We spent about an hour and a half looking around and taking pictures.

When we left, tours started rolling in and the crowds of people started coming. Our next stop was Hong Island which was the highlight of the trip.

Our guide paddled us around and took us into tight caves. He showed us all the interesting rock formations and views and even offered to take pictures of us during the tour. The kayaking took about an hour.

OUR TIP : Put on Sunscreen before you get into the Kayak. The whole trip is in the sun and you will get burned.

The next stop was Keaw Cave. We were the only people here which made it feel so special. The cave isn’t very big which is a good thing since there is no light inside of it.

We spent around 30 minutes here. After this stop, we made our way back to the pier. The tour took around 4 and a half hours. Overall, it was an incredible experience and we couldn’t believe how beautiful this bay is.

Other things to do at Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is an incredible place to visit. So seeing from another vantage point is a must. We highly recommend going to Samet Nangshe Viewpoint to see the whole of Phang Nga Bay and get a sense of how big and magical this place is.

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint is a beautiful viewpoint that offers a panoramic view of Phang Nga Bay. It’s located an hour and a half from Patong Beach in Phuket. From here you can admire the limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay.

There are two ways to get to the viewpoint. You can hike up or pay some of the locals to drive you to the viewpoint. The entrance fee to the viewpoint is 30 Baht per person. If you want to get a ride up to the viewpoint, it’s 90 Baht per person. We recommend getting a lift to the viewpoint. It’s a 1KM walk up an extremely steep hill.

Phang Nga Bay is a bay situated between the islands the Phuket and the Malay Peninsula in southern Thailand. The bay is renowned for its stunning landscape, with limestone cliffs rising dramatically out of the emerald-green water, creating a surreal view.

If you want to visit James Bond Island, also known as Koh Tapu, is one of the most popular attractions in Phang Nga Bay. The island’s unique shape and towering limestone cliffs, which rise over 20 meters above the sea, make it a remarkable landmark. Its scenic beauty and the James Bond connection make it an excellent place for tourists to visit and take photos.

Who is James Bond?

James Bond is a fictional character created by British author Ian Fleming. He is a spy for the British Secret Service, also known as MI6. Bond has been the protagonist of several novels and short stories, as well as a long-running film franchise.

In Fleming’s novels, Bond is portrayed as a tall, dark-haired, and ruggedly handsome man. He is a skilled marksman, a fluent linguist, and an expert in hand-to-hand combat. Bond is often depicted as a womanizer and enjoys drinking martinis, shaken, not stirred.

The first James Bond novel, “Casino Royale,” was published in 1953. The novel was a success, and Fleming went on to write 12 more Bond novels and two collections of short stories featuring the character.

The Bond novels were initially popular in the United Kingdom but gained global recognition after the release of the first Bond film, “Dr. No,” in 1962. The film starred Sean Connery as Bond and was a commercial success. The film franchise has since become one of the highest-grossing film series of all time.

Each actor has brought their own interpretation to the character, but Bond’s core characteristics, such as his suave demeanor, his skill in combat, and his love of women and martinis, have remained consistent.

Bond has become a cultural icon, and his impact can be seen in films, television shows, music, and literature. The character has also been parodied and satirized in various media, such as the “Austin Powers” films.

In addition to his cultural impact, Bond has also had a significant influence on the spy genre. The character’s popularity helped to popularize the genre in the 1960s and 1970s. Bond’s use of gadgets and advanced technology has also been emulated in other spy stories.

Overall, James Bond is a cultural icon and one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world. His popularity has endured for over half a century and continues to captivate audiences around the world.

History of James Bond Island

Before James Bond Island became famous for its appearance in the James Bond movie, it was merely an uninhabited island in Phang Nga Bay. The island’s unique rock formation, shaped like a nail, was created by the sea’s erosion and weathering over millions of years. Making it the perfect location for a bond island home of a James Bond villian.

In 1974, the island’s breathtaking beauty caught the attention of the filmmakers of “The Man with the Golden Gun,” who chose it as a filming location. The movie starred Roger Moore as James Bond and Christopher Lee as the villain, Scaramanga.

The island’s appearance in the movie brought it worldwide fame and recognition, and it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand ever since.

Geography of James Bond Island

James Bond Island is a part of the Ao Phang Nga National Park , which comprises 42 islands, mangrove swamps limestone caves, and limestone cliffs. The island’s unique shape is the result of the limestone rock formation that has been carved by the sea’s erosion and weathering.

The island is approximately 20 meters high and about 4 meters wide, making it a small but iconic landmark in the Phang Nga Bay. The island’s surrounding waters are also home to a rich marine life, including sea turtles, sharks, and tropical fish.

Semi Private Boat Tours

We love Krabi province and its more than 200 islands! But we also like to discover and show you other beaches and less known places located in neighboring provinces: because variety is the spice of life!

We have the great pleasure to introduce you to the iconic James Bond Island in Thailand, situated in the magical province of Phang Nga!

Phang Nga is one of the 77 provinces in Thailand, which lies between the provinces of Krabi and Phuket. Did you know that about 10,000 years ago, when sea levels were lower, it was possible to walk from Phuket to Krabi?

On August 14, 2002, the Phang Nga Bay National Marine Park was declared under the category of "Ramsar", due to its international ecological importance. Phang Nga Bay has 400 km2 and 42 islands, comprising shallow marine waters and intertidal wetlands, with at least 28 species of mangroves, seabeds and coral reefs. Fascinating!

But this is not all, in our James Bond Island tour by speedboat from Krabi; this popular island is just one more place within this fabulous National Park that we want to show you!

Our James Bond Island Boat Tour

James bond island.

Therefore, in our James Bond Island tour, we will visit in just 1 day, Krabi and Phang Nga provinces, and we will almost reach Phuket!

What does the excursion to james bond island include.

In our James Bond Island tour by speedboat, we will see this famous island from the boat, so that we can dedicate more time on getting to know and explore other lesser-known sites of Phang Nga Bay, such as Koh Yao Yai (Long Island) and Koh Yao Noi, and in the province of Krabi, the stunning Hong Islands.

During this James Bond Island trip, we will visit unspoiled beaches, caves accessible only at low tide, and we will have lunch, of course, in one of these beaches away from the outside world!

JAMES BOND ISLAND TOUR BY SPEEDBOAT

James Bond Island in Thailand is undoubtedly the most famous island in Phang Nga Bay. The James Bond Island is a limestone rock formation in the Andaman Sea; about 200 m high, and shaped like a “monolith”.

This island appeared in one of the James Bond 007 movies: “The Golden Gun”, in 1974, with Roger Moore as the lead actor. Thanks to this movie, this island became even more popular!

Phang Nga Bay holds a unique charm for its landscapes of infinite limestone cliffs, which have raised the interest of many, for example this amazing bay was also part of one of the sagas of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith", in which the bay was used as the main photograph of the planet Kashyyyk.

For all this, today millions of tourists come to James Bond Island every year to photograph it, so it is not a very quiet destination, and this is why we also want to show you other much more quite islands, within the provinces of Krabi and Phang Nga. You have to know our James Bond Island Tour by speedboat.

HOW TO GET TO JAMES BOND ISLAND AND WHAT CAN YOU SEE AT THE TOUR?

You can go from Phuket to James Bond Island by long tail boat, or you can make the tour from Krabi in our speedboat. The difference is very simple, if you start the tour from Phuket, you will miss the beautiful area of Koh Yao and Hong Islands, since they are very far from Phuket, whereas if you join our trip from Krabi, you will have the chance to visit these astonishing islands.

We will use a speedboat rather than a long tail boat, because the distances are longer, and since we will visit almost 3 provinces in 1 day, we will need some time! Do you still need more reasons to join us? Then keep reading…

James Bond Island tour is one of the most touristic excursions in Thailand, so you may be wondering… How to get to James Bond Island from Krabi? And better yet, How to visit them without crowds?

In Thailand it is very common to name the islands according to the shape they have, so, many years ago they decided that this limestone rock looked like a nail (in Thai “tapu”), and hence James Bond Island is known among locals as Koh Tapu.

During our James Bond Island boat tour, we will stop the boat in the sea, right in front of Koh Tapu, finding the best angle for you to take the best possible pictures!

As James Bond is an overcrowded island, the government of Thailand decided to create an artificial beach around James Bond Island, where you can find many souvenir shops. This is why you may find queues of an hour to take the usual photo of James Bond Island.

Koh Yao or Long Island

Koh Yao or Long Island consists of two main islands located between Phuket and Krabi: Koh Yao Yai ("yai" means big), and Koh Yao Noi ("noi" means small). To the north of Koh Yao, we will visit with our speedboat, Koh Yao Noi, the smallest and most beautiful!

In the several beaches that we will visit around Koh Yao, you will be able to enjoy moments to relax or take a bath, and without forgetting a delicious as Thai dishes buffet style, all this will be waiting for you on the beach after your bath!!! This moment is one of the highlights of our James Bond Island tour!

Koh Yao is the ideal island to admire the heart of the beautiful and particular Phang Nga Bay. The landscape is formed by hundreds of limestone formations of all possible shapes and heights, and surrounded by small lonely beaches, including Koh Ku Du Lek and Tree Bay. Tree Bay is a quiet beach with huge old trees!

The funny thing about, it is that depending on the sea level at the time we go inside, you can enter walking or swimming! Once inside you will discover a huge mangrove forest floating on the emerald water surrounded by cliffs. Furthermore, you will witness an amazing natural phenomenon that only occurs on this Koh Yao Noi Island, a surprise that will be revealed when you see it with your own eyes!

We can assure you without any doubt, that you have never seen a place as picturesque and different as this one!

The mangrove is the only tree, which can survive in seawater! They breathe using their roots when they are exposed at low tide, absorbing oxygen through their pores. Mangroves protect coastal areas from erosion, hurricanes and tsunamis. As well as playing a key role of the ecosystem of this region as they serve as home for many marine species.

Impressive group of islands in Krabi, with a beautiful lagoon: the famous Hong Islands Lagoon, a natural pool surrounded by limestone cliffs and mangrove tress! We will try to arrive at the best time, to make sure there are not many boats.

Also, if we are lucky, we will find bats inside Hong Islands!!!
