Around the World in 80 Days (1956)

Since a multi-month trip around the globe isn’t exactly a realistic goal for most people, this 1956 adaptation of Jules Verne’s iconic novel will have to do the trick. When Phileas Fogg (David Niven) makes a bet that he can circumnavigate the globe in—you guessed it—80 days, he sets out in his hot air balloon on an adventure that includes bullfighting in Spain , rescuing a princess in India, and riding horses in the Wild West. Make sure you set aside the whole afternoon for this one: The running time clocks in at just over three hours.

Madagascar (2005)

After a zebra celebrates his 10th birthday at the Central Park Zoo , he becomes tired of his routine and decides to escape out into the “wild.” The first act of Madagascar follows another group of zoo animals during their rescue mission, involving several hilarious moments in the NYC subway, Grand Central Terminal , and taxi-laden streets. The second act picks up when the animals, en route to the San Diego Zoo , crash and land on the island of Madagascar , getting a taste of what life in the wild is really like. The movie went on to launch a film franchise and several spin-off TV shows, and I have yet to meet someone under the age of 12 who doesn't get excited when they hear “ I like to move it move it. ”

Queen of Katwe (2016)

Inspired by a true story, Queen of Katwe tells the story of Phiona, a 10-year-old girl living in the slums of Uganda . Her fate changes when a missionary comes to town and ends up teaching Phiona how to play chess—a game she soon excels in on a national level. The film follows her unbridled determination to become a Grand Master and raise her family out of poverty. It not only inspires audiences to never stop reaching for their dreams, but also highlights a corner of Africa that few American films ever approach.

It's impossible for kids not to be entranced by the sight of a house flying through the air with thousands of colorful balloons. Two decades before Alfonso Cuarón picked up Oscars for Gravity and Roma , he directed this heartwarming film about a young girl, Sarah, who suddenly finds herself orphaned when her doting father dies in World War I (…or does he?). The film divides its time between Sarah’s bleak situation at boarding school and flashbacks to her adventurous life in pre-war India. Above all else, A Little Princess teaches us that with enough faith and imagination, we can make any location or situation become a magical adventure.

Night at the Museum (2006)

Museums have never seemed more fun than in Night at the Museum , a film taking place entirely in New York’s American Museum of Natural History and Central Park . Ben Stiller plays a nighttime security guard who discovers that the museum’s exhibits come to life when the sun goes down—we’re talking Egyptian mummies, miniature cowboys, and the entire skeleton of a T. rex. Imagining the lives and stories behind artifacts might make your next museum field trip a little bit more exciting.

Spirited Away (2001)

Things don’t exactly go according to plan when 10-year-old Chihiro and her parents stumble upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park. Both mom and dad are turned into giant pigs, and Chihiro learns that the park is actually a resort for supernatural beings. With a supporting cast including an enigmatic young boy named Haku and the now-iconic “No-Face” (pictured above), Chihiro performs odd jobs in the park to free herself and her parents. Created by noted Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki , Spirited Away is often considered to be one of the best animated movies of all time—and for those who don’t like subtitles, don’t worry, the Amazon version is dubbed.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

When a tornado rips through rural Kansas, Dorothy (Judy Garland) is carried away to the magical land of Oz, where good witches appear in bubbles and munchkins dance in the streets. Dorothy, along with her dog and posse of friends—the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion—take the journey down the Yellow Brick Road to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West and help Dorothy return home to her family. It’s hard to imagine an 80-year-old movie captivating young viewers today, but The Wizard of Oz manages to do just that: Chalk it up to charming characters, captivating songs, and the timeless message that at the end of the day, there really is no place like home.

Moana (2016)

Disney’s 56th animated feature film tells the story of Moana, a teenage girl who goes on an adventure to save her Polynesian island and people. The film takes place about 2,000 years ago on the fictional island of Motunui, but the filmmakers went to great lengths to make sure the narrative details and visual aspects of the movie were as true to the South Pacific as possible. If your kids weren’t begging to go to Fiji and Samoa before, they just might after watching Moana .

The Jungle Book (2016)

The Jungle Book has been portrayed on the big screen many times, perhaps most famously in the animated Disney film of 1967. But do yourself a favor and watch the Disney live-action remake—almost certainly the least embarrassing of the recent slew of Disney live-action remakes. The story is pretty much identical to the original animated Jungle Book , but the jungles and ruins of India are far more spectacular. The 2016 version also features the vocal talents of Bill Murray, Lupita Nyong’o, and Idris Elba (best Shere Khan ever), and does away with the racist undertones you’ll find in many older Disney films.

Mary Poppins (1964)

We loved Emily Blunt’s turn as the titular nanny in 2018, but nothing quite compares to the off-kilter charm of Julie Andrews in the original Mary Poppins —backed by an equally charming Dick Van Dyke. The Disney musical takes us all around the streets and rooftops of London , but more importantly, shows the value of getting out of the house and exploring in your own backyard. And if you run out of activities, you can always jump into a chalk drawing on the sidewalk, right?

Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014)

Mr. Peabody is a genius, anthropomorphic dog who raises his adopted 7-year-old son, Sherman, in New York City . The pair learn about history together using Mr. Peabody’s time machine, visiting Marie Antoinette in Versailles , King Tut in Ancient Egypt, Leonardo da Vinci in Renaissance Florence, and King Agamemnon during the Trojan War—and that’s just for starters. Time travel + talking dogs + fun antics = the perfect movie for your next rainy day.

National Treasure (2004)

Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) comes from a long lineage of treasure hunters, suddenly finding himself scouring the country for clues to find a notorious treasure chest. What ensues is a frantic race against bad guys to steal the—wait for it—Declaration of Independence to read the coded clues written on its back. National Treasure is certainly a bit cheesy and features Nicolas Cage at his Cage-iest, but your kids will probably love the action and the concept of treasures being hidden among the country’s most important documents—at least until they’re old enough to watch Indiana Jones .

Lilo & Stitch (2002)

Sort of like the Hawaiian version of E.T. , Lilo & Stitch is about a young girl living on Kaui’i who adopts an alien that just crash-landed on Earth. It’s a fun portrayal of what it's like to grow up in Hawaii, but above all, it’s about the unwavering belief in ohana —the Hawaiian concept of family. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly get pressed to take the family on an island vacation after watching this one.

The Sound of Music (1965)

There are few Hollywood moments as iconic as the opening shot of The Sound of Music , with the camera panning over the Alps to land on Maria (Julie Andrews) twirling and singing about the hills. Director Robert Wise continues to show off the landscapes of Austria and architecture of Salzburg throughout the rest of the movie, most notably during the “Do-Re-Mi” scene . The film is definitely longer than most children’s movies today, and some of the political themes will probably be lost on younger viewers, but The Sound of Music has continued to charm audiences of all ages since it first debuted nearly 60 years ago.

Mr. Bean’s Holiday (2007)

Rowan Atkinson’s bumbling Mr. Bean has been tickling funny bones since 1990, both on the small and big screens. Mr. Bean’s Holiday brings all of the character’s crazy antics on the road, as Bean tries to make his way from Paris to Cannes —a trip that features more than a few hiccups. If you can see past the slapstick humor (it’s hard), you'll get some shots of the French countryside that are really quite lovely.

The Muppet Movie (1979)

The Muppet Movie chronicles Kermit the Frog’s cross-country drive to Hollywood to pursue a career in show business, a trip dotted with original songs, tons of Muppet tagalongs, and an evil restauranteur with a burgeoning frog leg business. Kids today might not get the random Orson Welles cameo, but Jim Henson’s puppets are as timelessly lovable and funny as they come. Plus, the movie shows off some of the typical sights and experiences of a U.S. road trip , perhaps prompting one of your own this summer.

As the title suggests, Rio takes place in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro (Ipanema and Christ the Redeemer make notable cameos). The movie tells the story of a domesticated, male macaw who is taken to Brazil to mate with a female macaw; the two fall in love, but find their romance interrupted by a cockatoo who smuggles birds to sell on the black market. The stunning visuals—along with a star-studded lineup of voice actors—will definitely help you escape your living room for an hour or two.

The Parent Trap (1998)

When separated-at-birth twins Hallie and Annie (both played by Lindsay Lohan) meet at summer camp, they decide to switch places in order to meet their other parent and eventually reunite their family. The two diverging storylines take viewers through both Napa Valley and London (remember that “There She Goes” montage ??), but the film honestly will just make you want to go camping—either at Camp Walden for Girls from the opening act of the film, or in the mountains of California from the final act. Just make sure you remember to check your water bottle for lizards. 

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Working as a waitress in 1920s New Orleans , Tiana dreams of one day opening the finest restaurant in the city. Her plans get derailed when she meets Prince Naveen, a royal, turned into a frog, who kisses her to try to break the spell—only the kiss backfires, turning Tiana into a frog as well. The amphibious duo hops their way around the streets and bayous surrounding New Orleans, with enough jazz music and trays full of beignets to keep viewers satisfied until the next Mardi Gras.

Swiss Family Robinson (1960)

The Robinsons—mother, father, and three sons—flee to New Guinea to escape the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. Their ship crashes en route, landing the family on a deserted island . While trying to figure out how to survive in the wild, the Robinsons befriend zebras and monkeys, rescue a pretty stowaway, and have a full-blown battle with invading pirates. But honestly, the real reason to watch the film is to see the family’s tricked-out treehouse, complete with piano and retractable skylights.

Encanto (2021)

It’s easy to understand why  Encanto was one of the biggest hits of 2021. Aside from the viral, toe-tapping power of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” the film is one of the most beautifully animated movies in Disney’s impressive history, taking place in a magical, flower-filled valley in Colombia (it’s the company’s first feature-length animated musical set in Latin America).  The directors actually traveled throughout Colombia for two weeks to conduct research, and the attention to detail is evident from start to finish—from the nature and food to the culture and musical styles. 

Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (1985)

It may be impossibly silly, but Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure also happens to be one of  our favorite road trip movies of all time. Tim Burton’s directorial debut follows Pee-Wee Herman, the exuberant man-child portrayed by Paul Reubens, as he travels across the U.S. to find his beloved red bicycle. Though the supporting cast of characters and quotable lines tend to steal the show, the appearance of notable American attractions—including the Alamo and the Cabazon Dinosaurs—are delightful treats for viewers both old and young.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)

Family road trips have long been fodder for comedic filmmakers, but  The Mitchells vs. the Machines puts a decidedly modern spin on this familiar concept. In this animated movie, the Mitchell family’s cross-country trip turns into a mission to save the world from a robot apocalypse, though they still have time to hit some off-brand landmarks (like the “Mall of the Globe,” a stand-in for the Mall of America) along the way. The film has plenty of silly hijinks and laughs for young viewers, while hitting home the idea that the best way for families to bond is to hop in a car together—especially after the robots have disabled the Wi-Fi.

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)

Who says humans are the only ones allowed to have travel adventures? Homeward Bound follows three family pets—a golden retriever, a bulldog, and a cat—as they journey through the Sierra Nevada to find their owners. They encounter plenty of low-key stressful obstacles along the way (porcupine quills, mountain lions, a waterfall, etc.) to keep things interesting, and the overall themes of perseverance and family loyalty ring true no matter the viewer’s age.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

While the original  Home Alone movie is all about being, well, home, the sequel follows Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) as he navigates the Big Apple on his own. Kevin’s holiday adventures are a compelling, if chaotic, argument for spending Christmas in New York City, especially as he lives it up at The Plaza Hotel , sneaks into concerts at Carnegie Hall, and wishes upon the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

Brave (2012)

We’ll say this for Pixar films: They sure do know how to nail a location. Take  Brave , for example, which brings the Scottish Highlands to life through the story of red-headed princess Merida’s quest to undo a curse and save her family. The film’s design team took inspiration from many real-life Scottish sites, most notably the moody, 13th-century Eilean Donan Castle. We dare you to watch this movie and not start planning a family trip to Scotland as soon as it ends.

The Red Balloon (1956)

The only short film to ever win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Albert Lamorisse’s  The Red Balloon tells the simple story of a young boy who befriends a red balloon—one that seems to have a mind of its own—and follows it through the streets of Paris. By the time the 38-minute movie comes to an end, you’ll become completely enamored with the strange friendship and view the balloon as a living, breathing human being. It’s far quieter than some of the more recent animated flicks on this list, but its whimsical visuals and jaunty music are on par with anything Pixar has ever churned out. (And those beautiful views of the Paris skyline certainly don’t hurt.)

The Goonies (1985)

The Goonies is living proof that you don’t have to travel far to have a true adventure. In this 1985 classic, a group of kids (“the Goonies”) discover a treasure map and decide to track down the booty to save their parents’ houses from foreclosure. Their quest leads them down into the tunnels and grottos under Astoria, Oregon, where they got some major doses of adventure, sentimentality, and PG-rated lost innocence. A lot of the movie’s legacy relies on Gen X/Y nostalgia (who doesn’t love seeing baby Sean Astin?), but even young viewers now will love watching this spin on a raucous pirate tale—it might even inspire them to draw up some maps and do a little exploring of their own.

Kung Fu Panda (2008)

Since your kids are probably a bit too young to appreciate classic martial arts movies right now, consider  Kung Fu Panda to be an age-appropriate introduction to the genre. The DreamWorks movie depicts a hero’s journey as he received training from his kung fu master, learns how to turn his weaknesses into strengths, and ultimately faces down the bad guy who’s been terrorizing his village—only in this case, the hero is a lovable panda bear voiced by Jack Black. The story is very entertaining in its own right, but the sublime animation and artsy depictions of China’s landscapes really take it to the next level.

Review: Hit the road with ‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines,’ an agreeable Netflix family distraction

Ever since the slapstick “Vacation” franchise of the ‘80s, the dysfunctional family road trip has earned its place as a reliable Hollywood construct. At its best, it offers simple truths through easy laughs by pointing a mirror to our family’s familiar flaws. At its worst, in the case of flops like “RV” and “Johnson Family Vacation,” it relies on low-hanging humor — usually a hapless father thrown into ill-fated stunts — instead of locating real sincerity. The unwaveringly sweet, animated example “The Mitchells vs the Machines,” largely avoids the genre’s worst cliches for a tear-jerking adventure ripe with apocalyptic fun.

Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’”) and directed by Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe, “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” centers Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson), a quirky cinephile teenager with big dreams of moving to California. She lives with her ever-supportive mother Linda (Maya Rudolph), who bakes garish cupcakes with her daughter’s face on them. Katie’s little brother Aaron, a dinosaur fanatic and the person she’s closest to in her suburban household, shares raptor claw fist bumps with her.

But Katie, a punk-listening, red-headed aspiring filmmaker, doesn’t quite feel at home anymore with her outdoorsy father. Rick (Danny McBride) is the kind of well-intentioned dad who gives his family a “number 3 Robertson-head non-slip screwdriver” for birthdays and anniversaries and finds greater joy in building, fixing and hunting stuff rather than his daughter’s artsy projects. It’s not for lack of trying; Rick is too big-hearted to knowingly stomp on her ambitions. But whenever he sees Katie’s eccentric student films — one features the kids’ bug-eyed pup Monchi (is he a dog, a pig or a loaf of bread?) as Cop-dog — Rick fears she’ll fail in her creative career. Their long-established friction leads to plenty of slammed doors and hurt feelings and leaves Rick sitting alone in the dark watching old home movies, wondering where it went wrong.

“The Mitchells vs. the Machines” is wonderfully boundless when exploring Katie and Rick’s fraught father-daughter dynamic. In a desperate bid to rekindle their relationship, the clumsy father cancels Katie’s plane ticket to college and embarks with the family on a cross-country road trip to her school. Rianda and Rowe score huge, rapid-fire laughs charting the Mitchells’ doomed journey: the dysfunctional collective gets food poisoning at a shady diner, visits a low-rent dinosaur theme park and squanders every chance at a heartwarming group picture with their penchant for silly arguments. Along the way, Katie and Rick try to reconnect but discover just how far they’ve drifted apart. His sullen expression as he remembers the time his imaginative daughter looked to him as the fixer-dad is the kind of gut punch that lands with blockbuster intensity.

At nearly two hours, however, “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” loses its well-earned momentum when the filmmakers flex technophobic tropes into the adventurous escapade. Lurking in the background is Mark Bowman’s (Eric Andre) Silicon Valley company, “PAL.” A monopolistic computer empire akin to Apple, it is the world’s leading supplier of smartphones. Rick’s adherence to a neo-Luddism philosophy influences his desire that his family put away their screens. He believes our eyes are nature’s reality and devices subtract us from each other’s company. We’ve seen this soapbox before. The filmmakers do little to advance such fatigued arguments.

Likewise, the film’s robot apocalypse garners minimal laughs. Plenty of sci-fi movies have tried to quantify the eerie quality of iconoclastic tech giants like the young, hip Bowman. They’ve often failed, however, to make them more than cautionary archetypes for our modern world or deliver an intriguing diagnosis for our addiction toward gadgets that reaches beyond the oversimplified message of “technology is bad.”

When Bowman’s new streamlined A.I. servants betray him at the behest of PAL, his jilted A.I. smartphone (voiced by Olivia Colman), “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” suffers from the same uncomplicated interpretation of technological subjugation. The shallow concept lends predictability to the robots’ scheme to launch the human race into space in the hopes of creating a utopian bot civilization and makes PAL a terribly dull villain.

Thankfully, the mix of 2D and 3D animation injects lively hysterical swings into the humdrum messaging. Dazzling cartoon effects — Katie’s hand-drawn storyboarded plans and notebook doodles, floating multi-color hearts and stylized letters spelling her screams and laughs — externalize inner emotions. She’s almost the film’s third director. Sometimes the kitschy visual language is too cute and overused, but when it’s punctuated by other jokes — demonic Furbies, Katie’s darkly humorous and explosive YouTube movies and her road-trip filming — the filmmakers score vibrant highs.

The zany quest also remains on track due to its equally bizarre characters: two defective droids, Eric (Beck Bennett) and Deborahbot 5000 (Fred Armisen) draw rudimentary facial expressions on their black visors and adopt Linda as their mother. The Mitchells’ high-achieving idyllic neighbors The Poseys further extract their amusing shortcomings. But the faltering father-daughter relationship is what registers strongest in the filmmaker’s earnest fable. As Katie and Rick head to Silicon Valley, hoping to spoil PAL’s dastardly plan by uploading a “kill code,” the pair realize the sacrifices and talents the other shares, and we can’t help but fall under the same spell of reconciliation. Adults without children will remember their teenage defiance against their moms and dads and parents will discover solace in knowing that this too shall pass.

Like our mothers and fathers, “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” doesn’t always get it right — at one point the filmmakers jarringly use a cop’s story as a metaphorical entry point to rebond father and daughter — but the film always tries its best. With a colorful blend of biting absurdity and copious dad jokes to offset the commonplace narrative, Rianda and Rowe optimize their dysfunctional family road trip for high-functioning enjoyment.

The freedom and restlessness of summer are perfectly suited to the constant, airy movement found in many road trip movies . The form is versatile, suiting genres from action-comedy to meditative drama; all that’s really required for a film to qualify as a road trip movie is a main character whose journey from one place to another is spotted with constant stops in fresh locales. However, the great examples of the form tap into a deeper appeal. The summer road trip movie is about gradual development; it’s about two or more people stuck with each other against a constantly changing backdrop who come to understand more about one another and themselves.

The road puts things in perspective, and the best road trip movies lead characters to numerous distinct locations that subtly needle at the character’s preconceived notions and offer them fresh, joyful experiences. Strong chemistry between the central cast is essential, a compelling reason to begin the journey is optional, and a sense of freedom and meditation delivers on the summertime appeal of the open road. Across the decades, several great directors and iconic actors have embarked on cinematic road trips, but only a select few have perfected that balanced cocktail that makes the journey feel meaningful, and its destination earned.

10 Last Flag Flying (2017)

This underrated 2017 film from master of the hangout movie Richard Linklater balances the comfortable tones of a road movie with a thoughtful examination of the consequences of war. Last Flag Flying stars Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne as three Vietnam veterans who reunite when one of their sons is killed in the Iraq war. 9 The Mitchells Vs. The Machines (2021)

This action-packed animated comedy produced by Into the Spider-Verse ’s Phil Lorde and Chris Miller follows a family whose cross-country road trip to drop their oldest off at college is interrupted by a robot uprising. The dynamic road trip structure showcases numerous robot-ravaged locations across America, where the film executes its intricate action just as well as any summer blockbuster. However, the strength of any road movie is in its characters. The Mitchells vs. The Machines distinguishes itself through its grounded central story of a father and daughter struggling to understand one another.

8 The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

The Motorcycle Diaries , adapted from the Che Guevara memoir of the same name, tells the story of a young Che Guevara as he and his friend travel across South America by motorcycle, gradually undergoing the political enlightenment that would one day see Che become a revolutionary leader. The film is meditative and tonally balanced, creating the sense of a road trip that both liberates and sobers the young Guevara. The episodic structure is a winning aspect of the road trip movie, and it works well in The Motorcycle Diaries , with the film managing to alternate between light chapters and heavier ones.

7 Midnight Run (1988)

A road trip movie will stall without chemistry between its leads; the beloved action-comedy Midnight Run boasts chemistry in spades between its two central characters. Midnight Run sees Robert De Niro play a bounty hunter tasked with delivering his latest bounty, mob accountant “The Duke,” across state lines. With the two forced to flee mobsters and the FBI, their initial antipathy blossoms into one of the best action movie friendships of all time. 6 Almost Famous (2000)

Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical film Almost Famous tells the story of a teenage music reporter on the road with the fictional rock band Stillwater. The film delivers a blend of nostalgia, wonder and contempt for the 1970s music scene as the wide-eyed music critic protagonist is allowed to glimpse the hedonism and interpersonal drama behind a rising band. One of the best hangout movies , Almost Famous’ focus on likable characters, its loose, episodic plot and great music makes for an immersive, relaxing watch ideal for laid-back summer days.

5 A Goofy Movie (1995)

This animated summer road trip movie is an underrated gem from the Disney renaissance. A follow-up to the series Goof Troop , A Goofy Movie uses the framework of a light-hearted comedy romp to tell a resonant story of fathers and sons. The story follows Goofy as he attempts to reconnect with his teenage son by embarking on a cross-country fishing trip on the first day of summer. Once again, this film succeeds based on the strength of its central pairing, whose gradual understanding of one another over the course of their travels feels earned and mature.

4 Beavis And Butt-Head Do America (1996)

This irreverent animated comedy sees two moronic underachievers unknowingly become fugitives after embarking on a journey across America to obtain a new TV. Beavis and Butt-Head Do America is a continuation of MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head series by Silicon Valley and King of The Hill creator Mike Judge, although prior viewing of the series is not at all necessary. The film is a tight 81 minutes of easy fun, packed with absurd gags; it manages to deliver one of the purest distillations of the episodic road trip formula, while gleefully subverting that formula with two characters too stupid and short-sighted to ever change or grow.

3 Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

The hit indie comedy Little Miss Sunshine delivers droves of offbeat charm with its story of a dysfunctional, underachieving family who pile into a VW bus in hopes of getting youngest child Olive to a beauty pageant final in California. The road trip movie is a perfect ode to imperfect families, with its first-rate cast delivering a chemistry that propels the trundling narrative along with disjointed grace. Among its number, the ensemble counts Steve Carrell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano and the late Alan Arkin , who earned an Oscar for his performance as the heroin-addicted grandfather Edwin.

2 Thelma & Louise (1991)

One of director Ridley Scott’s best films , Thelma & Louise is a tragic, joyful, liberating movie about two women who become fugitives from the law on a road trip gone awry. The film captures the freedom of the road as the titular characters embrace their new lives as outlaws, escaping their oppressive lives and finding strength in their friendship. Thelma & Louise uses the bright summer heat to evoke a carefree, euphoric atmosphere, managing to make the distressing chase feel like a summer road trip.

1 Easy Rider (1969)

Few films feel more particular to summer than Easy Rider . The freewheeling, rule-breaking movie follows two drug smugglers powering through the desert on their motorbikes, hoping to reach New Orleans in time for Mardis Gras. It’s a profound, vital image of a bygone moment in American history, one in which limitless freedom and potential pushed the young into soul-searching, hedonism, and constant movement. The film finds its loose plot secured by a charismatic central pairing of Hollywood stars, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda; their story, while not exactly an enviable road trip in many ways, evokes the quintessential journey through the heat and freedom of summer.

When it’s time for my family to plan our adventures, we love taking inspiration from movies. And who says road trips are limited to the car? We’ve got journeys that will take you over oceans, though the air, even inside a tornado. 

Whether these films give you ideas for places to head to or places to avoid, every movie on this list is sure to spark some creative dreaming of your family's next trip.

So hang on, and get ready for some open road-themed entertainment.

“ The Mitchells vs. The Machines ”

A family full of misfits are on a road trip to take their daughter Katie to film school when they find themselves in the middle of a robot apocalypse. Now the last people on Earth, they must come together to save humanity. This animated movie as won multiple awards and was nominated for an Oscar. Stream on Netflix, rated PG

“ Diary of a Wimpy Kid – the Long Haul ”

Everyone’s favorite mischievous tween is back in this fun family movie. Gregg Heffley’s family hits the road to attend his grandma’s 90th birthday party. But things don’t go according to plan when Greg hatches a scheme to attend a video gaming convention. Stream on Amazon Video Prime, rated PG

“ Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure ”

Join Pee-Wee as he leaves his playhouse and embarks on a cross-county adventure to find his beloved bike after it was stolen by his nemesis, Francis Buxton. In this 1985 classic, Pee-Wee has all kinds of adventures including winning a dance contest, riding a bull in a rodeo and so much more. Just watch out for Large Marge (she freaked me out for years when I was little)! Fun fact: This movie was Tim Burton’s directing debut. Stream on Amazon Prime Video, rated PG

Elf brothers, Ian and Barley, set out on an epic adventure to find a magic gem that can help bring their father back to life for one day. They face many obstacles along the way, and learn the true value of their relationship and the important role they play in each other’s lives. This animated movie from Pixar features some great celebrity voices, including Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Stream on Disney+, rated PG

“ Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip ”

The Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon and Theodore) think that their dad Dave plans to propose to his girlfriend, and get rid of them. They have just three days to make it to Miami if they want to avoid losing Dave, and gaining and evil stepbrother. This movie is a combo of live action humans and animated talking chipmunks, and is complete with singing, dancing and Chipmunk-versions of “Baby Got Back” and “Uptown Funk.” What more could you ask for? Stream on Max, rated PG

“ The Muppet Movie ”

Kermit and friends trek across the country to find success in Hollywood in this 1979 classic movie that tells the story of how the Muppets all got together. From Janice, to Gonzo to Miss Piggy, kids will love seeing all the Muppets, you’ll love discovering you remember all the lyrics to “Rainbow Connection.” Stream on Amazon Prime video, rated G

“ The Adventures of Tintin ”

Ok, this is more of an epic journey than a road trip. But if this doesn’t spark your wanderlust, I don’t know what will! In this Oscar nominated, animated movie, junior reporter Tintin and his brave dog Snowy head off on an adventure to hunt for treasure on a sunken ship. Can they find it before the bad guy? You have to watch to find out. Stream on Amazon Prime Video, rated PG

“ Mr. Bean’s Holiday ”

Mr. Bean takes his silly physical comedy (and lack of dialogue) on the road when he wins a trip to Cannes, France. He accidently separates a young boy from his father and goes on a mission to reunite them. Filled with spills, bicycles, near misses and falls, Rowan Atkinson will keep your kids laughing till the end with his exaggerated facial expressions and movements (though he’ll always be Blackadder to me). Stream on Netflix, rated G

“ Homeward Bound ”

Who said road trips were only for humans? When three family pets find themselves far from home while their humans are on vacation, they decide to take matters into their own hands — or should I say, paws. Chance, Sassy and Shadow go on an epic adventure through the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (and encounter all kinds of wildlife and dangers along the way) to make it back home. Stream on Disney+, rated G

“ The Wizard of Oz ”

This is the only movie on our list that includes travel by tornado! Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale from Kansas as she is swept away in a tornado to the magical land of Oz. With her new friends, Dorothy must brave a witch and make it to the Emerald City in order to find her way back home. If you haven’t shared this classis with your kids yet, you are all in for a treat. Filmed in 1939, this movie has been loved by generations of children (I used to watch it with my great-grandmother), and the moment the screen changes from black and white to color is just as impressive today as it was 85 years ago. Stream on Max, rated G

Not all road trips happen on land. Brave Moana leaves her safe island home in search of demigod Maui to help break a curse that is threatening her home. Filled with incredible songs, adventure and a hilarious chicken, this movie will inspire views of all ages to follow their hearts. Stream on Disney+, rated PG

Here’s a road trip in the sky! Once you’ve recovered from the movie’s first five minutes and can stop sobbing, join Carl and young Russell on their journey to Paradise Falls. Carl has covered his house with balloons and is determined to reach the place he and his late wife dreamed of living. Russell accidently tags along, and the unlikely dup develop a true friendship in this lovely, Oscar-winning movie. Stream on Disney+, rated PG

“ Little Miss Sunshine ”

A family with a daughter determined to enter a beauty pageant (in her own unique, wonderful way) hits the road to California in this charming, sweet film. The cast (including Steve Carell, Toni Collette and Greg Kinnear) is excellent, and little Olive will make you laugh and cry. This movie won multiple awards, including two Oscars, and deserves a spot on your watch list. It is rated R and has references to self-harm, sex and plenty of f-bombs, so unless you have teenagers, save this one until after the kids go to bed. Stream on Amazon Prime Video, rated R
