Our Budget Madagascar Birding tour provides the budget conscious birder with a fantastic opportunity for observing the highlights of this magical island’s incredible birds and wildlife. On this tour we will visit three of Madagascar's core critical habitats; namely the deciduous woodlands of Ankarafantsika, the dry spiny forest around Ifaty, and the moist eastern rainforests of Analamazaotra and Mantadia, all of which hold an exceptional diversity of endemic birds and lemurs. We stand excellent chances of finding all 5 of the island's endemic bird families, as well as up to 18 different lemur species, including the awesome Indri. His combined qualities as the overall tour leader in terms of personality, ability to deal with whatever got thrown at him and interactive skills were all great. He was very good at keeping us informed of what was planned and was happening next. He was very good at imposing a gentle but essential discipline on the group - rotation in the procession, rotation of positions in the buses, ensuring that everyone got to see the bird - all made for a really good functionality in the group. Hey folks, I am currently thinking of trying to head to Ecuador next summer, and I am considering going on the Mindo Valley tour run by Wings, which is about 8 birding days hitting up the usual sites. This will be my first trip to South America, although a couple of years ago I did bird Panama, so have some neotropical experience. Originally was thinking of going on a tour with Tropical Birding, but the Wings tour seems to target a few birds that they don't normally go after (Oilbird, Long-wattled Umbrellabird) and seems slightly cheaper when taking in account the time. I've never been with any company before. Has anyone here been on a tour with either company (bonus points if it was to Ecuador)? What was your experience like? This will be my first foreign birding tour, so any insights would be appreciated.  

I've compiled bird tours for my local Audubon chapter that used Tropical Birding services in the past, overall, great company and expert guides but similar to Wings, they seem to be a bit too expensive for what the trips offer (example compare to similar Rockjumper tours to the region). If you want, I can give you the contact info of a local guide I'm using in Ecuador later this year that offers great budget trips, even if you are traveling alone (I'm doing 6 days with him for around $1750 with everything included except the flight).

I did a TB trip to Ecuador including Galapagos; enjoyed it a lot, although was somewhat disappointed that certain species were missed. Advice- check what they are offering carefully, and enquire about any “missing” sites or species in advance. We got what we paid for, but we probably should have paid for a little more in advance.

For what its worth, while I ended up getting a private guide, we did come across a Tropical Birding group on a couple of occasions. Chatting with them they seemed to have enjoyed their trip. Granted Ecuador is sort of there home base in many ways, as they operate a well known lodge down there, So at least in Ecuador they didn't seem to be too bad.

Didn't notice this thread until today – and Mysticete has already gone on his tour, but I will add my two cents since the thread still seems to be active. I've been on two trips with Wings and one trip with Tropical Birding. Wings is US-based, and Tropical Birding was, I believe, originally based in South Africa, but now seems to be licensed in Ecuador. Wings is a first rate operation. The guides on both the tours I had with them were first rate, and the accommodations were great. Their prices are competitive with other top-tier companies such as Field Guides and Rockjumper. (I saw a comment above that suggested their prices were a bit high. That is not my experience. You have to compare prices carefully – Wings usually includes domestic flights in the tour cost, Rockjumper doesn't and bills you separately for these. Also, Wings has a 4% discount for payments by check – though this applies to the main tour payment only.) Tropical Birding is a solid company, but I would consider them second-tier. I had an Ecuador tour with them, and we had an Ecuadorian guide who was decent, but not top-notch. (As an example, we had to correct him when he identified a wood peewee as an Olive-sided Flycatcher). He no longer guides for them, however, and they do have some top-notch guides. But a problem with their website is that they no longer list what guide will be accompanying each tour departure. I emailed them once asking for this information, and never got a reply. Nevertheless, I might consider going with them again – at least if I could find out who the guide was before I booked.

Holiday destination dubbed 'cheap Amsterdam' is perfect for 'cosy city break'

A budget travel expert has tipped off holidaymakers about a wallet-friendly alternative to Amsterdam for those seeking a cosy city escape. TikTok user Em, known on the platform as @emsbudgettravel to her 69,000 followers, has been trawling Europe for the most economical destinations and sharing her top picks online. In her latest clip, she shared that she's ticked off 10 countries this year alone, all on a shoestring budget of merely £200 "for everything" each trip.

Earlier in the season, Em put Athens, Greece on the map for thrifty travellers, but as the chill sets in, she's back with another suggestion for the cooler weather . "My next destination is perfect for a cosy city winter break maybe over a long weekend," she teased. "If you've been wanting to go to Amsterdam but it's too expensive then this is also a great alternative."

The savvy traveller then revealed Eindhoven as the spot to hit. "You can frequently find really cheap flights here from a lot of different airports," she noted. "It's quite a bit cheaper than Amsterdam for pretty much everything – food, drink, activities and transport."

Eindhoven may be smaller than the Dutch capital, but Em highlighted that it still has that quintessential Netherlands vibe, albeit with a more "laid-back approach". She went on: "It's very walkable and easy to get around and has loads of cosy cafes."

Em concluded her travel advice by recommending a trip to Eindhoven, which can be "easily combined" with several other destinations just across the Belgian border. Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels are all relatively close by.

She also shared some pricing details, saying: "I visited Eindhoven a couple of weeks ago and was only paying £36 per night for my half of our four star city centre hotel." She advised travellers to use Skyscanner to find low-cost flights.

One of Em's followers responded to her post, saying: "I did this trip back in July! Was so so good." In a follow-up video, she provided more details about her trip, revealing that she flew Ryanair from Stanstead and spent her first day exploring the city.

On the Saturday, there was a market by the cathedral before Em headed to the park and on to the Silly Walks Tunnel. She took in the street art in the surrounding area and visited the Flying Pins attraction – a giant sculpture representing a bowling ball and 10 pins.
