Dutch climber embarks on new adventure with Lidl-Trek

Lidl-Trek is thrilled to announce the signing of 28-year-old Sam Oomen, who has signed a three-year contract that will see him don the Lidl-Trek jersey through 2026. Oomen, a renowned climbing domestique, brings a wealth of experience and a history of contributing to overall victories at prestigious races like the Vuelta a España and Giro d’Italia. The transfer is a significant milestone for Oomen, who will not only change team, but also his supermarket allegiance as he makes the switch to the Lidl-sponsored squad.

“When I turned professional I already had the pleasure to meet Luca,” explained Sam Oomen . “Back then, I chose to sign for Team Giant Alpecin, but meeting Luca and talking with him has always left me with a good feeling towards him and his team. As far as I can assess it really feels like the right team and right place at the right time for me, for which I’m really grateful and excited.

“During my years with Sunweb and Jumbo I learnt a lot about myself and understand what works for me to get the best out of myself, both mentally and physically. Besides that I simply also learnt a lot about cycling in general, which I hope can contribute to making Lidl-Trek the best team possible.”

sam oomen tour de france 2023

“I hope to be a bit more consistent again. After my injury and some rough crashes I for sure had some good moments but lacked the consistency required to step up another level. For sure my strength lays in the hilly stage races and I have a big love for the long hilly classics. Lidl-Trek has for sure some big players to compete for the biggest prizes in these races and if I can contribute to this goal I would be super happy.

“There are several Lidl-Trek riders that I’m looking forward to being teammates with, but if I have to name one or two; Bauke Mollema has always been an inspirational rider for me who I really appreciate. It’s a privilege to ride with him during the last years of his career. Next to that I’ve always have had a good connection with Tao Geoghegan Hart, who I’ve already known since we raced as juniors. Being teammates with him after all these years racing together and against each other is really exciting.

“2024 would be a success for me if I am able to contribute to the teams successes and biggest goals. For sure it would be nice to get a result for myself but above all I just want to give my best on and off the bike, whatever the outcome may be. Normally my strongest years are still ahead of me and with the right mindset, environment and consistency I hope it can create some nice things.”

Lidl-Trek General Manager Luca Guercilena welcomed the arrival of Sam to the Team: “I met with Sam several years ago as a young rider on the start of his journey as a professional cyclist. Whilst he raced for a different team, meeting him left a positive impression and of course I have followed his progression over the years. We’ve seen Sam ride as an important helper for his leaders in Grand Tours, including being on the winning team twice. It’s our hope that he can help us to do the same in the future.”

Oomen was an 'average player' at Jumbo-Visma, but thanks to look-a-like and buddy Tao, hope now looms at Lidl-Trek.

Sam Oomen is spreading his wings, and how! After his breakthrough at the Dutch Team Sunweb and several disappointing years of bad luck at Dutch Jumbo-Visma, he now embarks on an adventure with the American cycling team Lidl-Trek. A notable transfer? Maybe, but maybe not. In the team of inspirer Bauke Mollema and good friend Tao Geoghegan Hart, Oomen might be able to find his way better.

Oomen is the man who, in 2018 as a domestique for Tom Dumoulin, finished ninth in the Giro d'Italia. He is the man who raced finals in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Lombardy and finished top ten in major races like the Tirreno, Catalonia, Switzerland, and Poland. However, we haven't seen that Oomen much in recent years. After a broken hip, an operation on his groin artery, and a broken shoulder blade in 2023, it's time for the best Sam to resurface again.

At Lidl-Trek, Oomen came onto the radar thanks to Geoghegan Hart, who was brought in this winter as the leader from INEOS Grenadiers. Geoghegan Hart and Oomen: put two photos side by side, and from ten meters away, you can't tell who is who. Reddish hair, a mischievous face, sparkling eyes, and a narrow mouth. Both also born in 1995, and now teammates for the first time. "Sam's name did come up from Tao's side when we were talking to him. Sam's contract was expiring, and we were looking for such a type of rider, so it came together well," Steven de Jongh, team leader at Lidl-Trek, told IDLProCycling.com .

Friends or not, at Lidl-Trek, they brought Oomen in mainly because of his qualities. With only 28 years of life under his belt, De Jongh still sees a lot of potential. "Sam has had some problems and lacks some confidence. Hopefully, he will find that here again, along with a bit of fun." At Lidl-Trek, he is given full trust. What's more: De Jongh confesses that Oomen is on the shortlist of thirteen for the Tour de France. The leader there? Exactly: Geoghegan Hart. With this in mind, we start an intriguing interview with Sam himself...

The interview with Oomen starts below the photo!

Sam Oomen on Jumbo-Visma, his transfer and a misinterpreted interview

A new team, Sam... You already have a bit of experience with that, but how have the first weeks been?

'Well, the first weeks... Actually, this training camp is kind of a second week, because we had our first week in October in America. That was a team meeting. This is the first real week with the bike. It's hard to compare, but with all these new people, it is definitely out of the comfort zone."

Do you like that?

"I don't know if you can say it's fun to step out of your comfort zone, but afterwards, you are often glad that you did."

Was your departure from Jumbo-Visma a personal choice or were you forced to leave?

"I think it was a bit of both. We both had the feeling that it was good to go to another team. That felt somewhat contradictory to me because Jumbo-Visma is a very family-like team, with many familiar faces from the Rabobank era. The service course is just around the corner, so in that sense, it's hard to leave. But the team is changing, and my career is too short to miss out on something. I would have regretted it. I was just a very average player in the Jumbo-Visma team, I think. It's such a team of champions... I could keep up there and it's nice to belong somewhere, but you also want to be a bit special. I couldn't distinguish myself enough, and that's what I strive for."

What have you been promised at Lidl-Trek in that respect, that it will be so different from Jumbo-Visma?

"Promised is a big word, you just have to look at the teams. With all due respect, because Lidl-Trek is now a super strong and balanced team, but even then, there is a difference with Jumbo-Visma. There you have Jonas Vingegaard, a Tour de France winner, and the results in the grand tours speak for themselves. Those are such champions, they ride to win, and in my case, you quickly fall down the pecking order when it comes to personal chances or racing in finals."

Have you enjoyed the past year of Jumbo-Visma at all?

"Uh, well, cycling is of course a team sport, but there is a very large individual component to it. Then I think the enjoyment is greatest when you win as a team, and you're part of it. That was exceptional in the Giro d'Italia, so I really enjoyed that. That was very special, but it does have to do with the fact that I was there, to be honest."

In an interview on the Lidl-Trek website, when your transfer was announced, you said that the best years are still ahead of you...

"Yes, it's funny how that goes, quite typical. That's why I'm always a bit wary of interviews. That wasn't the gist of the story at all, but by moving a few words around, the whole tone of the thing changes. I said that - if mother nature does her job and you've seen the course of my career - there should be a few very strong years ahead of me. In that sense, I find it too early to throw away my own chances or the racing of finals for big leaders, because normally there should still be a few strong years coming up, in which I should be able to improve. Not to say that the strongest years are still ahead of me, because I am aware that my first year as a pro could have been my strongest year. I think that's an important detail because it was described differently in the interview. I'm glad you asked about it."

Sam Oomen on his "crooked head", Geoghegan Hart, and "inspiration" Mollema

Do you already know what you are going to do in terms of the program?

"No, no, not exactly. So I can't say much sensible about that yet.

Tao Geoghegan Hart and you are good friends, from the same generation and will ride in the same team. That's going to be difficult for us, when soon you guys are riding around in the peloton with helmets on...

"No, you're going to see the difference very clearly! I sit very differently and more crookedly on my bike and also have a crooked head. You're going to recognize that very easily, haha!"

I do have the title of my article now, though!

"Haha, yes, please be careful with it."

How fun is it to ride in the same team with him now?

"It's really great. It's hard to explain, but I've known him since our junior days, when you're 17 or 18 years old. We always raced against each other, but also chatted now and then. Sometimes those chats turned into really good conversations, even off the bike. Then you know: we really understand each other. That's really fun, but it's different when you're teammates. We were at this training camp in Spain, and then you quickly go out together. Suddenly you share everything and I find it very interesting that you share the same grief, being from the same year (1995, ed.)."

Did his move to Lidl-Trek play any part in your transfer here?

"That might very well be, although I don't know exactly. It's possible that he pushed hard for me, but you really shouldn't ask me. I do think it played a role."

You called Bauke Mollema an inspiration in the interview mentioned earlier. Can you explain why?

"Well, you just have to take a look at his track record... We just talked about the strong years that should still lie ahead for me, and I see him as the epitome of someone who, like a fine wine, gets better with the years. In 2023 he might have had a bit of a harder time, but I find it incredibly impressive that in the current cycling world full of youth and rejuvenation, he stays true to the old school romance. Bauke is super professional, but races with his heart, keeps his bike computer in his pocket, and keeps the bigger picture in mind. He doesn't lose himself in the details. That's becoming increasingly rare in cycling, even with nutrition and such. He's still one of the best cyclists in the world with that approach, and in 2019 he even won Lombardy. In Bauke's style, not with the highest power outputs. And I don't count myself among that category either. But I am someone who also loves the romance of cycling, of racing, and of hard work. Then you feel attracted to that."

Is that also the reason why you and Tao get along so well? I had an interview with him, and he talked a lot about social issues and those kind of things.

"Yes, last week we trained together for five hours, and we did talk about those kinds of things, yes. We share that sentiment."

Do you think that's lacking in cycling, or is it particularly nice that you find it so much in Tao and Bauke? At Jumbo-Visma, maybe it's a bit more about the numbers and nutrition...

"Yes, although it's not that there aren't guys there who also feel that way. I prefer to consider myself fortunate to be with men who have the same way of thinking, rather than becoming bitter about men who don't."

Hearing you talk, it sounds like you would really enjoy going to the Tour with Geoghegan Hart.

"Yes, that would be really frikking great!"

Have you already talked about it together while cycling?

"Yes, it does come up, although not a lot. That might sound a bit unbelievable, but we don't spend all our time talking about the Tour."

Is five hours of cycling with Tao Geoghegan Hart and Sam Oomen over in no time?

"In my opinion, yes it is."

Sam Oomen on racing in finals and the difference between Jumbo-Visma and Lidl-Trek

Have you noticed any differences between Jumbo-Visma and Lidl-Trek? I hear here from your teammates that you do want to close the gap with them...

"Perhaps later I will indeed come to the conclusion that the differences are not that big. Yet, there is a different culture here, although I was aware that this question would be asked. So far, it's more of a feeling that I can't quite explain, but it is different here."

Maybe also more international, since Jumbo-Visma is still Dutch-run after all?

"That's definitely a difference, yes, yes. During the races, I just don't know what it's going to be like yet."

Mollema and many others have been riding here for years, that says something, doesn't it?

"I think that's a fair comment. Bauke is known as someone who likes to deviate a bit from the norm, to whatever extent it exists. He is a personality, and it's no coincidence that he wants to ride here until he's forty."

Would you like that too, to be a pro until age 40?

"As long as you keep growing, can pursue ambitions, and are satisfied with yourself and the world around you... And you still see a lot of growth when you're 33 or 34, then I understand why you would continue. The chance is just not that big, so Bauke is an exceptional case for me."

Final question: when would your 2024 have been successful?

"It would be really great to participate in the finals of the biggest races and play a significant role. For myself, but especially for guys like Tao, or Skjelmose, Ciccone, or Pedersen. If you can play a distinctive role in such races, that's what really gets my blood pumping. That would be very cool."

Oomen was an 'average player' at Jumbo-Visma, but thanks to look-a-like and buddy Tao, hope now looms at Lidl-Trek.

Jonas Vingegaard and Mathieu van der Poel take wins in first of the post-Tour de France criteriums

Traditional post-Tour festivities kick off with events in Boxmeer and Aalst with Ciccone, Philipsen, Poels also taking part

It's the week after the Tour de France and the attention of the racing world has quickly turned to the second edition of the Tour de France Femmes .

However, the stars of the men's peloton are still basking in the glow of the calendar's biggest race and taking on the traditional round of post-Tour criteriums.

Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and green jersey winner Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) are among the riders in action at a variety of criteriums this week along with polka dot jersey winner Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and stage winners including Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious), Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers), and Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Monday brought the first batch of 'races' in Belgium and the Netherlands which will pack the upcoming week and even stretch into August.

In the Dutch town of Boxmeer on Monday it was Vingegaard who came out on top, beating Poels and Mike Teunissen (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) to the line. Over in Aalst in Belgium, Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) took the win ahead of Philipsen and Ciccone.

Tour runner-up and white jersey winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) is the notable absentee from the week's festivities. The Slovenian was due to ride in Aalst but pulled out last week, citing the need to recover after the Tour.

The events are, of course, far from official UCI races. Tour jersey winners typically race in the famous jerseys won during the race, having picked up a nice appearance fee for taking part.

The biggest stars ride at the front to contest the win with no real racing for the line – instead, the criteriums are put on more for the public spectacle than the competition.

Kaden Groves may have inherited the Vuelta a España green jersey Tuesday after the withdrawal of Wout van Aert, but he went about putting his own seal on it with a big sprint win Wednesday.

The Australian rewarded the work of his Alpecin-Deceuninck team in taking victory in Santander, blasting in ahead of Pavel Bittner (Team DSM-Firmenich-PostNL), Vito Braet (Intermarché-Wanty) and the rest of the peloton.

It was his third sprint win of this year’s race.

“It was quite a tough day, starting dry and then majority of finish was wet,” Groves said. “It made it quite dangerous out there.”

The transition stage featured just two category two climbs, but very wet conditions did increase the difficulty.

Four riders went clear immediately after the start and gained just shy of five minutes. They were hauled back close to the end, though, with Mauro Schmid (Jayco AlUla) and Enzo Leijnse (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL) leaping out of the peloton and speeding past them inside 3km to go.

Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny) also jumped from the bunch and caught those two riders with 1.4km left. However he paused rather than pulled, gambling on a sprint, and had to be satisfied with sixth place when Groves and four other riders caught and passed him before the line.

“My team was so strong, they had a super day, and they controlled it with Kern and DSM,” Groves said.

“It wasn’t easy and we only caught them in the final kilometer.”

Overnight race leader Ben O’Connor finished safely in the main bunch and holds his slender 5-second advantage over Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe). Enric Mas (Movistar Team) stays third, 1:25 back.

The GC stayed largely the same, with the only change being a slip of four places for Aleksandr Vlasov (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe). He had started the day 13th overall but lost almost 14 minutes.

“It wasn’t too hard, but it was a bit treacherous,” said O’Connor. “It wasn’t too complicated in the end.

“We’ve done a lot of riding so far in this race, so it’s good for the boys to have a bit of a break.”

Four riders versus the bunch

SANTANDER, SPAIN - SEPTEMBER 04: Jonas Gregaard of Denmark and Team Lotto Dstny (R) leads the breakaway during the La Vuelta - 79th Tour of Spain 2024, Stage 17 a 141.5km stage Arnuero to Santander / #UCIWT / on September 04, 2024 in Santander, Spain. (Photo by Dario Belingheri/Getty Images)

Stage 17 of the Vuelta a España was seen as one for the sprinters, although breakaway riders were, as ever, certain to try to frustrate that expectation.

It covered 141.5 kilometers from Arnuero to Santander. Mainly flat, it did feature two category two climbs, the Alto de la Estranguada and the Alto del Caracol. The latter summited at the halfway point of the stage, with downhill and flat roads taking them to the finish.

Stage 13 winner Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) was a non-stater, his team citing fatigue as the reason. Sander de Pestel (Decathlon-Ag2r la Mondiale) also left the race.

Four riders attacked immediately after the start. Jonas Gregaard (Lotto Dstny), Thomas Champion (Cofidis), Xabier Isasa (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Thibault Guernalec (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) clipped away to form the break of the day.

They built a lead of close to five minutes. Gregaard led over both of the day’s climbs, while Champion won the bonus sprint in Arce, 23km from the finish.

Heavy rain began to fall and Champion started to struggle. The sprinters’ teams were chasing hard behind, whittling down the lead, and this prompted Victor Campenaerts to leap clear with 16km remaining. He didn’t get far before being recaptured.

Champion was dropped with 11km to go, leaving three out front. They had 26 seconds with 8km remaining but the bunch was closing all the time.

It finally made the junction inside three to go, with Mauro Schmid (Jayco AlUla) and Enzo Leijnse (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL) whipping past the break.

Campenaerts tried again just before 2km to go and caught those riders with 1.4km left. He bided his time on the wheel, waiting for the gallop, but the Alpecin-Deceuninck team got up to them just before the sprint.

Groves got a perfect leadout and handily took his seventh career stage win at the Vuelta.

“There are only so many stages for sprinters and the rest have so much climbing, so the intermediate riders have to really try on days like today,” he said.

“It was the last opportunity for me at this race. We had a super motivated team at the beginning of the stage to control the stage and have the right numbers. So to repay them with win No. 3 is pretty special.”

What’s up next: Another shot for a break

Thursday’s stage 18 is a lumpier one, with the race to Maetzu-Parque Natural de Izki featuring a second category climb just under 100km from the finish, and then the category one Puerto de Herrera with 44km remaining.

The run in to the finish from there is lumpy, leading Groves to rule himself out.

O’Connor anticipates a busier day for his team.

“Break-management, we’ll have to be more proactive tomorrow,” he said. “It should be an easier finish, but this Vuelta is always throwing up curve balls.”

"The team is changing and my career is too short to leave anything behind" - Sam Oomen heads to Lidl-Trek after three years with Jumbo-Visma

Sam Oomen finished ninth in the Giro d'Italia in 2018 while supporting Tom Dumoulin. That was five years ago now, when a big future was expected for then 23-year-old Dutchman. However things didn't go as planned and Oomen had to settle for a rather humble role at Jumbo-Visma , coming to the team in 2021. Moving to Lidl-Trek next year, Oomen hopes to shine again, re-uniting with his friend Tao Geoghegan Hart .

"Sam's name did come up from Tao's side when we were talking to him. Sam's contract expired and we were looking for that type of rider, so it came together well," says Steven de Jongh, sports director at Lidl-Trek, in conversation with In de Leiderstrui.

VIDEO: Mathieu van der Poel shares teaser video before comeback to cyclocross

In de Leiderstrui asked Oomen where did the decision to move from Jumbo-Visma come from. "We both had the feeling that it was good to go to another team. That felt somewhat contradictory to me, because Jumbo-Visma is a very family team, with many familiar faces from the Rabobank days. But the team is changing and my career is too short to leave anything behind. I would have regretted that."

What is it like to link up with Hart? "That's really nice. It's hard to explain, but I've known him since I was a junior, when we were 17 or 18 years old. We always rode against each other, but we also chatted sometimes. Sometimes these suddenly became very good conversations, also off the bike. Then you know: we understood each other. That's a lot of fun, but it's different when you're teammates."
