My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed walking in Coastal Exmoor. The views of the sea, rugged outcroppings, peaceful meadows, and cordial towns made for many memorable experiences. We love walking for hours in nature, and Coastal Exmoor delighted us. Exploring at a walking pace fostered deep appreciation of the land, the sea, the culture, and the people. We grateful for our experiences and for the genuine care extended to us by On Foot Holidays staff.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

On Foot Holidays staff are the best. This was our fifth self-guided walking holiday with them. We are happy repeat clients because the staff are deeply committed to assisting their clients. They are detail-oriented and provide excellent, thorough information before and during the trip. They have chosen wonderful walks, pleasant accommodations, and they really know the locales and the providers at each location. Their customer service is frankly exemplary. They think of small details to make the experience go smoothly. We love to walk, and we look forward to our next On Foot Holidays adventure. I routinely recommend On Foot Holidays to friends and family. We give On Foot Holidays our highest recommendation.

We walked the coastal Exmoor route with our young daughter. Lovely mixed terrain, beautiful hidden coast locations, and comfortable / friendly accommodation. Overall the holiday was a nice balance of exhilarating and relaxing, and thoroughly enjoyable.

We wanted a UK trekking holiday that we could bring a baby to. Two other holiday companies had so far told us that they could not accommodate our request. On Foot Holidays made sure that we could do it, kindly tailoring the itinerary to ensure that the holidays would be appropriate for travelling with a baby. Communication was excellent and all instruction / information was thorough. When on the trek, we always felt like the operator was there to assist if we needed them; they helped organise alternatives / checked information on our behalf on a couple of occasions without issue.

Excellent experience

The holiday gave us an experience of the Italian lakes. All the hotels were great and the views from some were magnificent.

Initial tailoring of the holiday was great and the customer care was terrific. The local representative should also get praise for her advice and knowledge. Route notes were very detailed.

A 7 day walking holiday from Amalfi to Sorrento. Beautiful scenery, (mostly!) very good weather, good food & accommodation. Although there was plenty of warning in the pre-tour information, the walks were generally tougher than we have experienced with other operators, but no less enjoyable.

On Foot Holidays were excellent. The service we received was impressive, as was their attention to detail in the tour pack. The general information, maps and App were terrific and gave us all we needed for the trip.

Three friends and I did the On Foot Holidays walk through Tuscany the last week of May 2024. We had a wonderful time. The trip surpassed my already high expectations. The route was so beautiful and peaceful. We walked through vineyards, along county roads and through woodsy areas and ended up each day in quaint, historic towns. We enjoyed all the places that we stayed- the rooms were clean and we always had a private bath. The staff at each place was friendly and helpful. The maps and information that On Foot provided us with were excellent. We had no problem navigating our walk. We were very lucky to have sunny, beautiful weather the entire week. Needless to say we loved the Italian food and wine.

On Foot Holidays was extremely responsive to all our needs and questions. Their informational walking packet and their app were exceptional. I have absolutely no complaints. Our trip went off without a hitch.

We thoroughly enjoyed our walk in Umbria. On Foot had chosen a really lovely walk, getting us to beautiful places and accommodation we'd never otherwise find. We stayed in memorials places and had amazing meals, prepared by hosts who were proud to tell us about the amazing food and wine on the table. Overall, really excellent - from choosing and booking thorough the holiday itself. Recommended!

Always friendly, helpful and keen to work out what would really work for you. It feels very personal with On Foot - and good value compared to others. We know we can relax and enjoy our holiday as a result.

In June this year, we enjoyed a week of hiking around Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. This was self guided, staying in pre booked accommodation, bags transferred between locations. Full route maps and notes provided. we experienced fabulous scenery, great food and accommodation as well as getting to know the local guide - who was amazing. This trip had been originally booked in 2019, and due to personal events and COVID, we waited until 2024 to re-book. Best decision. ONFOOT made it all easy and enjoyable. We will book with them again.

ONFOOT are an extremely professional operator who pay attention to every detail. They know the routes personally and also provide a local contact to assist with additional questions and any assistance needed. When you deal with the ONFOOT team you feel that you are their only client - which of course you aren't. We have used them for various walks in Europe in the last 10 years and have never been disappointed with the organization, accommodation, maps, instructions and transfers.

The Menalon Trail takes you through some staggeringly beautiful mountain scenery. The going can be tough but still no problem for an octogenarian. The places we stayed at each night were either good or very good. When we ate at tavernas, the food was not only excellent but represented remarkably good value.

This was our 6th trip with On Foot and we are already thinking about a 7th. The walking app was invaluable and worked extremely well. All arrangements, taxi rides and accommodation worked perfectly as they always do. Communications affecting the route were communicated to us during our holiday which was most helpful. Queries from us are answered very quickly even at weekends, a service you don't get from large companies.

The whole experience was fantastic, even more spectacular than my friend and I imagined. Wei did the 5 night Tuscan trek, starting at Buonconvento through to Multipulciano. Right from the start we were utterly stunned by the scenery; the endless rolling hills, the iconic cypress trees, the vineyards and the 360 degree views. The accommodation along the way were mostly perfect - quirky and with so much character. The walking was made very easy with the level of detail in the written instructions. We used the recommended GPS as well but it wasn't really needed though a good backup.

On Foot Holidays were excellent, returning messages very quickly, giving us advice as to where to stay for a few extra days afterwards (Multipulciano, Siena and Pisa). My friend had an ankle injury before the holiday and we were unsure how much we would be able to do; On Foot Holidays gave us advice about the individual days and shorter alternatives. They could not have been more friendly and helpful.

On Foot Holidays booked us a 6 night, 5 day trek south through the Appennines on the "Salt Road" (Via di Sale). We climbed to 1700m with a 360 view over the mountains and the Po valley, and back down to the Mediterranean at Camogli. For the first three days we did not see a single other person, but wildlife and cows galore: the birdsong and the cowbells were the only things interrupting the complete silence. The walking was tough, but rewarding. The welcome was warm and the plumbing good in all the places we stayed, even in the most remote parts of the trail. We were glad not to be leading mules laden with salt, though...

On Foot Holidays planned and organised the whole week, including all the incidental transfers. They provided detailed trail guides for every metre of the way. The vagaries of the way marking and the simplicity of the hamlets and villages we passed through meant we sometimes puzzled for a moment or two but we were never lost and the combination of guide, map and GPS meant we were never seriously in danger of straying. The combination of fairly rigorous walking with civilised lodgings and painless baggage transfer (no backpacks!) was ideal.

We did the Menalon Trail, hiking between mountain villages in Arcadia in the Greek Peloponnese and booked via OnFoot Holidays. The information provided and hiking support package from OnFoot Holidays was outstanding. The accommodation arranged and the Greek hosts were charming and the spring flowers in May spectacular.

OnFoot Holidays offer holidays that are off the beaten track in quieter areas of Europe - which are delightfully free from over-tourism. It was the first time we had booked with OnFoot but would do so again.

We did a wonderful 6 day walking holiday with On Foot Holidays to the Yorkshire Dales. It was an amazing experience. On Foot provided excellent guides and GPS tracks and their customer service was so responsive! We had a knowledgeable local guide who stayed in contact with us throughout the trip to ensure everything was going smoothly. The B&Bs that we stayed at were so lovely - historic buildings, comfortable rooms, lovely hosts, and delicious food. The walking was pastoral, with beautiful views of the rolling hills, lovely stonework, and quaint little villages. It captured that "All Creatures Great and Small" experience. We loved the trip, it exceeded our expectations and we hope to do another soon!

On Foot Holidays exceeded our expectations for customer service. They answered our many questions throughout the planning phase and ensured that we had everything we need to be prepared for walking. The guides they provided were excellent. The booking was wonderful and they were still very responsive during the trip when we had questions. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a walking holiday.

Walking from town to town across Tuscany is amazing. The region is a spectacular experience for all the senses; awesome views, wonderful smells, different sounds, tasty tastes, and the walking provides all the touch you need! We walked from Montalcino toMontepulciano over three days and cannot wait to do more.

On Foot Travels does a great job planning and preparing, both responsive and accommodating. The trail plan they provided and supporting materials and app provided all that we needed. The b&b’s / hotels were delightful and in many cases offered great views of the countryside.

By not outsourcing our treks to third parties we are able to maintain the highest standards of safety, hygiene and value, all the while supporting innovation and responsible travel practices that protect the incredible natural environments we travel through.

These adventures do not go above 2500m and rarely involve camping.

Many of these trips sometimes involve some camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will often involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity.

Multi day walks are ideal preparation for our challenging adventures.

The exact inclusions and equipment for each of our adventures is listed once you've found the trip you want. Our trips are generally more inclusive than others in the market place in line with our philosophy of minimising 'extra payments' displayed outside of the main trip price as well as out of pocket expenses once you reach your destination.

What people love about Self-Guided Tours in Europe

Everything was excellent. The hotels, excursions, transfers to every location and the customer service. Communication was very effective. I highly recommend Tourradar.
Our recent island hopping adventure throuhh Syros, Mykonos and Tinos islands was an absolute dream come true, filled with stunning landscapes, rich culture and unforgettable moments. Travel Zone took care of all the nitty gritty aspects and we didnt have to worry about anything.
There were some issues with arranging the trip but once that was resolved everything was great. The hotels were all different -- but very nice with concierge services that were very helpful with bus schedules, restaurant suggestions, etc. The transportation to and from the airports and ferries was also great. The ferries were a bit of a challenge but the ferries themselves were very comfortable. We visited over Greek Easter so that was an added delight -- the candle lighting in Syros was amazing, Dot Travel at the Seabreeze Hotel in Crete was also great with helping us to arrange two guided tours and bus schedules for travel on our own, We are older, 79 and 81, so really enjoyed the freedom to plan what we wanted to do each day. It was a great adventure,

So rather than being directed to places of no interest to you, standing for long periods with a guide, or stopping at manufacturers, a self-guided city tour is organised with you in mind.

When you use a self-guided city walk, you get to plan:

  • What to see
  • What time to start
  • Go as slow or as fast as you like
  • See as little or as much as you want

Then all you need to figure out is, what is of interest to you for your city visit.

You can spend your time:

  • Visiting a museum
  • Wandering the local markets
  • Admiring stunning architecture
  • Enjoying a coffee at a small cafe
  • Eating at a local recommended restaurant
  • Finding the best views
  • Experiencing the nightlife

Having a pre-planned European city self-guided city walk organized before you arrive will save you time and reduce confusion.

It takes the stress out of reading loads of information, trying to map out a route, arriving at your destination, and wondering where to start.

What European city will you choose to see with your city guide in your pocket or purse?

Why Choose TravelKiwis?

It can be frustrating when you find yourself sorting through a maze of “visit a city” travel guides. You have to filter through website content of unrelated ads and silly gap filler “things to do” with no planned route to follow.

These are the reasons TravelKiwis created self-guided European walking tours.

Self-Guided City Walks by TravelKiwis has done all the hard work for you.

Having spent time from 2016 exploring Europe, we have visited many of the top cities of Europe. From the famous cities of Paris, Rome, and Venice to Barcelona, Prague, and Budapest. And many other stunning cities in Europe like Krakow, Berlin, and Seville.

If you love to plan your own timetable when visiting a European city, a self-guided city walk will give you more confidence (and time) to go out and explore.

And without the confusion about which museums, architectural gems, monuments, or local eateries to visit, our guides can help with your choice.

With a self-guided walking tour, you’ll discover it’s easy to navigate a European city on foot to appreciate unforgettable places of interest.

So, let’s get started.

What are the Best Cities in Europe to visit?

Hungary Parliament Building

Have you always imagined yourself:

  • watching the early sunrise as you wander over the fabulous Charles Bridge in Prague
  • marvelling as the sunset casts a magical glow on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the City of Light
  • absorbing the wondrous historical and modern sights strolling the River Thames in London
  • standing in the ancient Colosseum 2,000 years after being built in Rome, the Eternal City
  • sensing the youthful vibrancy in Berlin , now the City of Freedom
  • being awestruck by views from miradors overlooking Lisbon ‘s famed Alfama district

These are just some of Europe’s best walking cities.

Europe has so many magnificent cities; it is hard to count them all.  A traveller could spend decades wandering this historic continent and still not discover all the places worthy of a visit.

But these great cities of Europe are on every travel bucket list because every traveller wants to visit at some point in their lifetime.

These cities are often busier than other locations:

  • prices can be more expensive
  • accommodation is at a premium
  • events are often booked out well in advance.

But they are popular for a reason – because they have so much to offer.

The history, the architecture, the entertainment, the food, and the opportunities to explore all provide an exceptional travel experience.

And one of the best things to do when visiting a new European city is to walk.

Enhance your European city visit with a walking tour

One of the best features of TravelKiwis Self-Guided City Walks is that it shows an ideal path to the key highlights of a European city.

Our guide is available in “real-time” as you walk.

So when you are in the city, you click on the link immediately below the city map. Google Maps appears, showing the walking path and locations.

You can then follow the map with your location pinpointed.

So, if you wander away from the path, finding your way back to the next location is simple.

And as many European cities have FREE Wifi hotspots, you can use their free data.

The other option is downloading the TravelKiwis Self-Guided City Walks and following it offline.

Remember to carry a battery pack charger with your smartphone cable.

Having an ebook for a self-guided city walk gives you all the information at your fingertips.

Each guide has a comprehensive list of:

  • Places to visit with a photo
  • Restaurants and cafes to try
  • Nearby attractions for a more extended city break
  • Tips to navigate the city
  • Distance in km and miles
  • Comprehensive map

Having a detailed map and overview of the places to see makes it much easier to visualize your city sightseeing walk.

And if you want to see every place in one day, you can spread it over three days.

Plus, your self-guided city walk has a distance of kilometres and miles, so you know how far the walk will take you.

Every destination on the walk has informative and descriptive notes.

There’s a little bit of history, maybe some folklore, and if the place of interest is open to the public, say a museum.

Every destination has a photo that enhances your city orientation walk.

For each of the places within the guide, the photo makes it easier to identify the point of interest. The crisp and clear photo makes it an accurate visual, so there’s no confusion.

Having an ebook with a map that fits in your pocket is fantastic.

Stay and See the Best of the European Cities

Four column building with dome top

One of the best ways to see a European city is to stay in the old city.

Although accommodation can sometimes be slightly expensive, you will be closer to the historic centre.

The old city area is often pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to navigate your way around on foot.

You are closer to the start of your city orientation walk to the main sightseeing attractions. And it’s not far back to your accommodation when you need a restful break.

Ideally, staying three nights in a European city allows you to settle into a routine of planning your daily walking tour.

Allowing you to absorb everything the city has to offer, including its charm.

Some of the best cities in Europe to spend three days in are:

  • Paris – french cuisine, french flair, and romance
  • Berlin – historical sites and fantastic nightlife
  • London – walks along the Thames to Westminster
  • Lisbon – amazing panoramic views

Staying in the old city gives you the choice of an early start to avoid crowds or the summer heat or starting later on a winter’s day.

What are the Best European cities to visit in Winter

White marble wide church

It all depends if you enjoy mild winter temperatures or a crisp, cold winter’s day.

Some of the best European cities also have wonderful Christmas markets in winter to enhance your European city stay.

While the north of Europe is colder, so are the cities of Eastern Europe. But the European cities near the Mediterranean are milder.

You can visit:

  • Vienna – magical old city with classical charm
  • Madrid – milder temperatures for outdoor dining
  • Budapest – wandering Buda and Pest along the Danube
  • Prague – vibrant Christmas market

A self-guided city walk is ideal for organising your European city exploration for one or more days. And walking is one of the best ways to maintain your overall health.

A self-guided city walk is Sustainable and Healthy

When you see the large hop-on, hop-off buses go by, it’s nice to know you are helping the environment with your walking feet.

Even 30 minutes of walking each day can improve overall health.

So, a self-guided walking tour also has the added benefit of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially when you have your 10,000-step daily goal.

With your mind active, you’re also helping to keep your brain healthy as you negotiate your way around the city.

And remember to use refillable water bottles for the drinking fountains to save the planet from more plastic.

Europe - Tour Package Highlights and Trip Insights

self guided walking tour europe

With so much to see, do, eat and buy, planning a Europe tour is no easy feat. There are, of course, the typical sightseeing musts: Paris’ Louvre, London’s Tower Bridge, and Rome’s Colosseum. Even Europe’s most frequent visitors will always find something new to discover. Read on for our top Europe tour highlights and Europe trip insights.

Europe Tour Package Highlights

  • Go back in time and explore the ruins of ancient civilizations in Italy and Greece
  • Snack on cheese and wine (or escargot, if you’re feeling adventurous) in the Champ de Mars, beneath the Eiffel Tower
  • Ride a bicycle through the townhouse-lined streets of Amsterdam before touring the canals by boat
  • Listen to the romantic songs of the gondoliers as you cruise through the canals of Venice
  • Indulge in an authentic Belgian waffle, drowned in chocolate
  • Enjoy an ice-cold beer from a beer stein at Oktoberfest in Germany
  • Hike from village to village in Italy’s Cinque Terre
  • Get lost between the shelves of some of the world’s most beautiful libraries, like those at Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland), Mafra Palace (Mafra, Portugal), and the Clementinum Baroque Library Hall (Prague, Czech Republic)
  • Join a Europe tour that goes through many of Europe's travel highlights in countries such as Spain , France , Italy , Netherlands and Scandinavia .

Europe Trip Insights

  • Traveling by rail is one of the easiest (and sometimes cheapest) ways to get around Europe, especially if you plan to travel for a couple of weeks (or longer). Investigate rail passes before you visit, particularly ones that can be used between countries. Interrail and Eurail are very popular among travelers.
  • Don’t skip the “touristy” destinations. Everyone travels differently, but the most popular European highlights are popular for a reason. Brave the crowds and be sure to stop by those more cliché sites - you’ll be glad you did.
  • Try not to over prepare! One of the great benefits of visiting Europe is that it’s incredibly easy to travel between towns and countries. Allow yourself some flexibility to open yourself up to new adventures (and avoid travel burnout). If you've booked a Europe tour package with accommodation, activities, guides etc. get ready to indulge and relax - you are up for a Europe trip of a lifetime.
  • Chances are you don’t speak 23 different languages, so be prepared before you travel. Avoid carrying around heavy guide books by downloading a translation app on your phone.
  • Note that not all European countries use the Euro, including the United Kingdom , Denmark and Hungary (among others). Do your research beforehand and be ready to juggle different currencies if you’re planning an extensive trip.
  • Travelling on a budget? Check our last minute holiday and travel deals to Europe . Also, consider looking for accommodation outside the city centre. Most large European cities are very well connected by public transportation, meaning all your bucket list sites are just a quick (and often inexpensive) bus, train, or metro ride away.
