17 Tolkien Travel Quotes About Adventure From The Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit

Last Updated on April 3, 2023

Often on this blog, I talk about the mundane travel practicalities; like how to pack a suitcase, the various TSA rules and regulations, all that boring but useful stuff!

But travel can be magical and otherworldly. I don’t think anyone captures that spirit better than J.R.R. Tolkien who I have loved ever since I was a little boy reading The Hobbit under the covers with a flashlight.

Things wouldn’t have been the same if JetBlue flew direct from The Shire to Mordor so the Tolkien quotations are not always relevant to modern globe-trotting.

Our airports are bland and sanitized and online trolls don’t turn to stone if they are still up tweeting at dawn. More’s the pity.

But there is something to discover in middle earth for every courageous traveler. So here’s a collection of advice gleaned from my favorite Tolkien quotes to inspire your next adventure!

Some of the best quotes are from the songs and poems of Tolkien so I have included videos of the songs where I could.

Lord Of The Rings Quotes About Travel & Adventure

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” Bilbo by J.R.R. Tolkien

One of the most popular LOTR quotes. This was a line said by Frodo, who quoting Bilbo at the time. So it was Bilbo that originally said it.

Hopefully, you won’t face the same level of danger that Bilbo or Frodo faced on your next vacation. Last time I checked there were no ringwraiths in Bangkok.

The danger that Tolkien speaks about is that your life could be changed forever. When you set off on an adventure you never know where you are going to end up!

Isn’t that thrilling?

Use Your Time Wisely

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us” Gandalf

J.R.R. Tolkien lived through some grim times. He served in the British Army during World War I and participated in The Battle of the Somme.

He didn’t have a choice in that, all he had to decide was what to do with the time he was given. Tolkien had to choose how to live his life in the time and place in which he lived.

In The Lord Of The Rings, Frodo had to decide what to do with his life. He chooses to travel to Mordor alone. Thankfully his buddy Sam wouldn’t let him take a solo trip.

You can relive that scene in this short video below.

What do you want to do with the time that you have been given? Do you want to wander the world? If so, why? Check out my post on positive travel if you are unsure how to answer.

Don’t Be Afraid To Get Lost

“Not all those who wander are lost” J.R.R. Tolkien

This is probably one of the most famous Tolkien quotes. “Not all those who wander are lost” is actually said by Gandalf in a letter to Frodo. But it’s a line that is part of a poem that Bilbo later reveals he wrote about Strider (Aragorn).

It’s short and to the point. That makes it catchy, but what exactly does it mean?

To wander is to move around aimlessly. If you move around without a clear aim people might assume that you are lost or disoriented.

But if the very reason for you traveling is to get lost, then you’re not really lost, you’re exactly where you wanted to be. Even if you are not entirely sure where that is.

One of my favorite things to do in a new city is to wander around going wherever my feet or my nose take me.

I don’t follow a map.

From a birds-eye view, I may look lost as I take an inefficient route through the city, but I’m not lost. It’s exactly these types of random routes that make for the most serendipitous discoveries.

What about you? Do you like to wander around a bit lost or do you prefer to have a tight itinerary when you’re on a trip?

The World Is Not As Scary As It Sometimes Seems

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.” Haldir to Merry

Things have changed a lot since Tolkien’s days. Now we are all connected and information flows quickly. If “bad news travels fast” was true in Tolkien’s day how fast does bad news get around now! It’s everywhere!

“The News” should really be called “The Bad News”. Since good news stories are so very rarely encountered.

And so it can seem that the world is full of danger and darkness. This impression could lead us to lock the doors and stay home since the world outside seems like such a dangerous place.

But let me play the role of Haldir here…

As you journey around the world you’ll mostly find good people. The world isn’t as scary as “The Bad News” would make us think.

There are still many fair places out there for you to discover. There is more love in the world than darkness.

So get out there and switch off “The News”!

Stay True To Your Travel Companions

“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens” Gimli

If you are traveling, and times get tough, you should stick together. Don’t leave your buddies when they need you.

If you’ve read the book or seen the movies you’ll know that Tolkien’s works are all about fellowship and sticking together to overcome darkness.

That sounds like not a bad travel philosophy too.

Your Destiny Awaits

“The Road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, and I must follow, if I can” J.R.R. Tolkien

I think Tolkien is talking about destiny here.

Wherever you are right now you are traveling down a road, the road of life.

Maybe you’ll get to explore new places and take some detours as your travel. But you must follow your path if you can.

Adventures Never Have An End

“Don’t adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story” Bilbo Baggins,  The Fellowship of the Ring

The drama of life is played by an ensemble cast. It’s more like an ongoing soap opera than a TV series or film.

Your storyline is just one part of the overall continuing drama.

Are your adventures over? They don’t need to be. Not yet.

I’ll say it again. Travel is a state of mind.

So long as your heart is beating, there is still time for your character to be involved in a dramatic twist.

It only takes a moment, and you don’t need to go anywhere.

You are always surrounded by the awe-inspiring spectacle of life and existence if you keep your heart and your mind open to seeing it.

Take The Hidden Paths

“Still round the corner there may wait a new road or a secret gate, and though I oft have passed them by, a day will come at last when I shall take the hidden paths that run west of the moon, east of the sun” Frodo

Curiosity. This, right here, is why we travel.

To see what is behind the secret gate.

To take the hidden path and discover what’s out there.

Keep Going!

“Though here at journey’s end I lie in darkness buried deep, beyond all towers strong and high, beyond all mountains steep, above all shadows rides the sun and stars forever dwell: I will not say the day is done, nor bid the stars farewell” Samwise Gamgee

No matter how bleak Sam refuses to give up. He knows that the good times are out there, even if he’s in the shit right now.

So the end of the journey is never the end. Sam keeps his traveler’s mindset right to the very end. He can endure all because he knows somewhere out there is eternal peace.

Is this a travel quote? It’s about traveling through life that’s for sure.

Take Your Home With You In Your Heart

“I feel that as long as the Shire lies behind, safe and comfortable, I shall find wandering more bearable: I shall know that somewhere there is a firm foothold, even if my feet cannot stand there again” Frodo

This is similar to the last quote. Though this time it’s Frodo dreaming of home. Just knowing that The Shire is out there and safe gives Frodo an anchor.

As you go traveling, do you have somewhere anchoring you and keeping you grounded?

Always Be Ready For The Next Adventure

“I think i’m quite ready for another adventure” Bilbo

This cheeky little quote is from Bilbo before he sets off to leave middle earth. By this time he is getting old but he still has a bold and courageous spirit.

Face The Right Direction

“Home Is Behind, The World Ahead” A Walking Song

I love this simple quote that beautifully captures that feeling when you start a new trip.

As Lao Tsu says “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Once you take that step home is behind you and the rest of the world stretches out before you.

You Are Always Traveling

“The Wide World Is All About You: You Can Fence Yourselves In, But You Cannot For Ever Fence It Out” Gildor To Frodo

There is another travel quote that I like – “Travel Is A State Of Mind” by Paul Theroux. Is it possible to be mixed up in that sense of adventure even when you have not gone anywhere?

Maybe if you realize that you can’t escape the world.

You are surrounded by the world right now. So why not be a traveler at home too?

Take a staycation! Try to experience your home with this same sense of adventure that you do when you travel to foreign lands.

After all, your mundane neighborhood would feel exotic to someone from another culture. Can you capture that feeling yourself?

Put Down That Travel Guide!

“The World Is Not In Your Books And Maps, It Is Out There” Gandalf

Put down your travel guide. Leave your map at the hotel. Stop looking at your destination through a camera lens. Forget your Instagram feed.

Now get out there and look, listen, smell, taste, and touch your destination.

Travel planning and sightseeing are fine, but make time during your trip to just soak up the experience.

There And Back Again – Hobbit Quotes About Adventure

Even a baggins can have an adventure.

“This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.” J.R.R. Tolkien

Did you ever find yourself doing things altogether unexpected?

If you travel to a new place and you might just meet a new version of yourself when you get there!

Don’t Worry About Being Late For Dinner

“I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone. I should think so — in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!” Gandalf & Bilbo in The Hobbit

You’ll never have an adventure if you can’t be late for dinner.

Someone said, “life begins at the edge of your comfort zone”, Bilbo had to get out of his comfort zone for his life to really begin.

It would have been a boring book and movies if Bilbo never left Bag End that’s for sure!

Your Nest Waits At The End Of Your Journey

“Farewell,” they cried, “Wherever you fare till your eyries receive you at the journey’s end!” That is the polite thing to say among eagles. “May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks,” answered Gandalf, who knew the correct reply.” J.R.R. Tolkien

Farewell in this sense means, Travelwell.

Your nest as somewhere you go to at the end of your journey.

In the meantime, keep on traveling, and may the wind carry you far!

Don’t Take Your Sword As Carry-On Luggage

“Then Something Tookish Woke Up Inside Him, And He Wished To Go And See The Great Mountains, And Hear The Pine-Trees And The Waterfalls, And Explore The Caves, And Wear A Sword Instead Of A Walking-Stick” J.R.R. Tolkien

Is there something Tookish inside you?

Did you see your great mountains yet?

Did you listen to the trees and the waterfalls?

Did you explore the caves?

If not…

What are you waiting for!

But leave your sword behind ! You won’t be able to take that in your carry on luggage!

J.R.R. Tolkien is buried in Oxford, England. His grave is in the photo at the start of this post. He was a wonderful man who took his horrific experiences war and processed and repackaged them into thrilling and delightful stories about adventure and fellowship that brought great pleasure to millions of people. Not bad for a life’s work.

Bilbo once asked “Don’t adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story” .

Tolkien’s adventure is over but it’s your job to carry on the story and have your own adventure. I think I know what Tolkien would have suggested!

40 Hobbit Quotes To Inspire Your Next Adventure

40 Hobbit quotes to inspire your next adventure featured image

This post is all about inspiring Hobbit quotes about home, friendship, and adventure.

Whenever I suffer from travel hesitation (which happens quite a lot these days), I go back to these hobbit quotes. These hobbit quotes give me motivation. They spur my inner need for adventure. I’ve said it once before and I’ll say it again, The Hobbit allows my Tookish side to take over, to overwhelm me, to make me crave movement.

Early twenty-something Anshula had itchy feet . Mid-twenty-something Anshula has idle feet and cozy slippers that she slips neatly into a shoe closet. She’s regained her childhood love of books. She’s put together. She knows how to cook (and has an alarmingly large cookbook collection )!

Needless to say, I’ve become a homebody.

But these hobbit quotes make me forget about my hobbit-ish ways and my hobbit-ish life. If you’re looking for a sign to go on the journey of a lifetime (even if it’s in your own backyard), this is it.

Here are forty hobbit quotes to inspire your next adventure!

P.S. This is the specific edition of The Hobbit that I own . All of the page numbers included are in relation to this edition.

Nine ‘Hobbit’ Quotes About Adventure

Eighty-three years ago today, J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit  was published. In celebration of the tale that introduced readers to Middle Earth and started the rise in epic fantasy with The Lord of the Rings , we’ve compiled this list of quotes from The Hobbit  to celebrate the thrill of budding adventure.

1. “This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.”

It’s interesting that Bilbo, a hobbit who is originally dead-set against anything that interrupts his routine, would come to see such a radical growth in character. At the onset of the tale, he proclaims, “I don’t want any adventures, thank you. Not today!” He calls them “nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!” And yet, he soon finds himself launching out of his cozy home and racing over the hills shouting, “I’m going on an adventure!”

2. “Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick.”

the hobbit journey quotes

When Bilbo is unexpectedly thrust into the path of adventure, he discovers something alive within himself; something waiting to explore. Yes, he often misses the safety of his hobbit hole, the warmth of his fireplace and a singing kettle, but he realizes that these comforts are not nearly enough for him. There’s a life that calls to him beyond the gardens and glades of The Shire. There’s an adventurer in Bilbo, buried deep in his ancestry and blazing in his heart.

3. “It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterward were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait.”

the hobbit journey quotes

Sometimes the real obstacles are those inside us, rather than before us. The darkness that can be found in the mind is more impenetrable than the darkest cave. And sometimes, taking the first step is the hardest hurdle to overcome.

4. “You are come to the very Edge of the Wild.”

the hobbit journey quotes

There is nothing more thrilling, and frightening, that standing at the threshold of new terrain. And this delight, mingled with fear, sets  your heart pounding, reminding you that you’re alive. Your racing pulse is sparked from stepping outside of your comfort zone, and the transition from what you have experienced so far to what you’ve never encountered. Gandalf describes this intermediate period as “the Edge of the Wild,” though Wild is more than an adjective for Bilbo. It’s a definitive and dangerous place. A spot on the wizard’s aged map where all the untamed and unkempt are kept. At the very Edge of the Wild, an adventure begins in all of its sheer and honest danger.

5. “There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember, you are over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go.”

the hobbit journey quotes

Whether wandering into a terror-filled forest or skulking into a dragon’s cave, there is always the promise of entertainment. Comfort alone may lead to boredom, whereas excitement follows a fearful journey.

6. “Now they rode away amid songs of farewell and good speed, with their hearts ready for more adventure, and with a knowledge of the road they must follow.”

the hobbit journey quotes

This passage comes as the party departs the safety they find in Rivendell after a perilous beginning. They originally left The Shire with a goal in their hearts and treasure in their mind’s eye, but after meeting a few hungry trolls, they know that the rest of their journey will be much harder. It’s never easy to leave a comfortable dwelling. It’s almost painful to step into uncertain danger, and most certainly aggravating to step into wet shoes. It’s even harder to return to this mode of travel after a nice, warm rest. However, they know that victory is achieved for those willing to put their small treasures aside in search of a greater one, so they continue on.

7. “You must depend on your luck and your courage.”

the hobbit journey quotes

The party’s shape shifter friend and gracious host, Beorn, leaves them with this pearl of insight at the end of his warnings for their further journeys through the Wild. He means it to say that there isn’t much he can give them to aid the beasts they will meet along their path, but doubtless, encouragement is found inside the admonition. There is hope in their luck and in their courage, even when all other hope to prevail seem dim.

8. “He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath. ‘I will give you a name,’ he said to it, and I shall call you Sting .'”

the hobbit journey quotes

When you can defeat a foe on an empty stomach, you know you’re living out an adventure.

It’s one thing to begrudgingly partake in adventure, or even to set off on one and wish you hadn’t, but it’s entirely another to take life by the horns (or, in this case, fangs). After Bilbo’s first use of his sword, when slaying the giant spiders, he doesn’t just name his tool, but also renames himself. He’s not just a whiny hobbit any longer, but a warrior that can stand in his strength to defend his friends. In overcoming this trial, Bilbo has discovered his resolve, his luck and his courage, and he is now someone worthy of a sword with a name.

9. “The road goes ever on and on.”

the hobbit journey quotes

Whether you’re one for comfort or for the riches of the world, The Hobbit  teaches us all one thing for sure: Whichever pathway you decide to take in life, there’s no end to adventure.

Over a decade after it first premiered, The Hobbit quotes are still referenced regularly in pop culture, which is a testament to just how influential the trilogy is. The first season of The Rings of Power also premiered earlier this year, depicting new aspects from J. R. R. Tolkien ’s expansive fantastical world, and the show also renewed interest in other adaptations like The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. As more details about The Rings of Power season 2 spark discussions online, it's the perfect time to delve back into the iconic trilogies that defined an entire generation.

Director Peter Jackson ’s prequel trilogy follows Bilbo Baggins’ perilous adventure through Middle-earth to reach the Lonely Mountain, which is guarded and claimed by the dragon Smaug. The best quotes from The Hobbit movies capture important events and reflect characters’ views and transformations over the course of the trilogy.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Watch on Max

10 "Death! That is what you will bring upon us!"

Bard the bowman, 'the desolation of smaug' (2013).

While everyone in Laketown is too happy to accept the offer from Thorin, Bard is the only one who points out that if the Dwarves “waken that beast,” “it will destroy” everything. Nobody seems too intimidated by Bard’s reminder of what “dragon fire and ruin” can do to their already struggling town, despite their history with Smaug.

Bard is a character with a storied past in Laketown, as his father Girion’s failure to kill Smaug still haunts him. He is more willing to remember than most exactly how deadly Smaug is, which is why he’s quick to try to remind the citizens to think back to the death and destruction they once experienced. If more people had listened to Bard's ominous and desperate warning, perhaps things would have turned out differently for Laketown.

9 "I kill where I wish, when I wish. My armor is iron – no blade can pierce me!"

Smaug, 'the desolation of smaug' (2013).

The dragon Smaug may be dangerous, but he’s also arrogant and seems to love to hear himself talk. This is precisely why Bilbo manages to survive for so long in his presence. At one point, the villain refutes Bilbo’s assertion about the living King Under the Mountain, as Smaug recalls how he “took his throne” and “ate his people.”

He proceeds to brag about how he can murder whenever and wherever, as it’s impossible to kill him. The irritating quote underscores the dragon Smaug's boastful personality , which he soon learns will be part of his downfall. Smaug isn't as invincible as he thinks he is, and all it takes is one weak scale.

8 "Such is the nature of evil. Out there, in the vast ignorance of the world, it festers and spreads."

Thranduil, 'the desolation of smaug' (2013).

The powerful Elven King Thranduil is known for being too cautious and is almost always hesitant to get involved in affairs that don’t affect him. This is clear in his monologue about “the nature of evil” and how it’s “a shadow that grows in the dark.” He adds, before interrogating an Orc, that “in time, all foul things come forth.”

Thranduil's well-written speech reflects the indifference he’s quick to display to anyone outside of the Woodland Realm. Despite knowing there is evil out there, he takes it as part of the natural order of things that shouldn’t concern him. This may have helped him protect his people for a long time, but it also led to their isolation and cruel indifference.

7 "Are we not part of this world? Tell me, Mellon, when did we let evil become stronger than us?"

Tauriel, 'the desolation of smaug' (2013).

A tense confrontation between Tauriel and Legolas takes place when they disagree about pursuing an Orc pack leaving their borders. Tauriel insists that “it is” their “fight” because “it will not end here.” She tells Legolas that “with every victory, this evil will grow” before asking a biting question about being “part of this world.”

Tauriel hates the way Thranduil isolates the Wood-elves despite knowing they could do so much to help those around them. Her argument emphasizes the way she plays a significant role in persuading Legolas to see the error in his father’s ways. Unlike Thranduil, Tauriel is empathetic and knows that the Elves' actions can affect the future of everyone in the world.

6 "If more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place."

Thorin oakenshield, 'the battle of the five armies' (2014).

In a heartbreaking final exchange between Bilbo and the best among the Dwarves in The Hobbit , Thorin, the Mountain King tells the protagonist to “go back to” his “books,” “armchair,” and “trees.” He adds, with a hint of forlorn understanding, that “if more people valued home above gold” like Bilbo, the world would be a better place.

Thorin's tear-jerking last words are an introspective comment about how he himself failed to see beyond the hoard of gold and treasure they found. Things could have been different for Thorin and the Dwarves had he not been a victim of the same thing that doomed his father. Thorin realized too late that he had prioritized the wrong things, which cost him his life in the end.

5 "I am fire. I am death."

Just when it seems like the Dwarves may finally be gaining the upper hand in their battle against Smaug, the dragon rises from their pool of gold. Promising “revenge,” Smaug flies towards Laketown with only retaliation, “fire,” and “death” in mind.

The iconic quote leaves fans with a cliffhanger, one which is only resolved after a year of waiting. Smaug is clearly angered and humiliated by the Dwarves’ attacks, which drive him to that enraged state. The only way he can reclaim his overconfidence and soothe his ego is to kill as many people as he can in Laketown – it’s the kind of logic that proves how pathetic and villainous Smaug can be .

4 "True courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one."

Gandalf the grey, 'an unexpected journey' (2012).

In The Hobbit , Gandalf shows the same kind of impressive intelligence he has in LotR . The way he gives advice to Bilbo isn’t unlike how he talks to Frodo. One important lesson Bilbo learns from Gandalf is how crucial it is to know “when to spare” “a life,” as the Wizard made sure to teach him when the Hobbit got his own weapon.

This great quote by Gandalf is a layered one, as its relevance is far-reaching throughout the LotR films. Bilbo would eventually use these words of wisdom when he’s deciding whether he should kill Gollum. It’s another plot point that’s connected to Frodo’s own journey, as Gollum is instrumental in destroying the Ring.

3 "I'm not a warrior, I'm a Hobbit."

Bilbo baggins, 'the battle of the five armies' (2014).

The very same “vest” that’s “made of silver steel” (or Mithril) that Bilbo passes on to Frodo, is one that the older Hobbit receives from Thorin. Bilbo is initially hesitant to accept it, saying he looks “absurd” before pointing out that he’s “not a warrior,” but “a Hobbit.”

It’s a quote that underscores how Bilbo hasn’t come to fully accept how strong he can be. What’s more, it’s a common sentiment that Hobbits like Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin eventually have about their own paths. Just like Bilbo though, these bold adventurers eventually find that they’re more capable than they think.

2 "I'm Going on an Adventure!"

Bilbo baggins, 'an unexpected journey' (2012).

Bilbo is already an important part of the original trilogy, but he becomes an even more memorable character through The Hobbit . His incredible journey takes a lot of courage to take those first steps out of the Shire, which is when he declares that he’s “going on an adventure.”

The gleeful line underscores the way Bilbo’s excitement replaces his fear of the unknown. Waking up with the Dwarves and Gandalf gone only provided a momentary comfort before it turned into a nagging feeling that he was missing out. That one big risk and brilliant decision would go on to change not just Bilbo's life, but the fate of the Middle-earth.

1 "It is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk, that keeps the darkness at bay."

When Galadriel asks Gandalf why he would choose “the Halfling,” he has a telling response that's also among the best quotes from The Hobbit . He explains that while “Saruman believes that it is only great power that can hold evil in check,” he believes it’s “the small things.” He also adds that “perhaps it is because” he’s “afraid and” Bilbo gives him “courage.”

Aside from being a wise reply, Gandalf’s inspiring line hints at the way he eventually relies on another Hobbit, Frodo, for an even greater task . His description of Saruman is also a painfully accurate reminder that their differences will cause a significant rift in their relationship.

12 Quotes and Lessons from The Hobbit

Hobbit-1

The Hobbit , by J.R.R. Tolkien, is one of my favorite books. I’ve read or listened to it several times, and the tale always strikes a new chord with me (which is why you should re-read books). The past couple of times, both as a reader and listener, a myriad of quotes have jumped out at me, leaving me to think about their application in writing, business, friendship, trust, and bravery.

Home is now behind you, the world is ahead! – Gandalf

In every telling of the great stories, the Hero’s Journey, the Hero must take leave of what has been comfortable and normal for him or her. We must do this as well when we strike out on a new adventure , and awaken from slumber to the quest ahead.

The world is not in your books and maps, it’s out there – Gandalf

In starting a new venture, whether it be a blog, business, or podcast, we must overcome the temptation to have all the answers and read all the right books. We must begin, the world is out there!

There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world – Thorin

This lovely quote speaks for itself, and has only taken on more meaning in the present world.

It’s a dangerous business, walking out one’s front door – Gandalf

In our hyper-cautious, mostly fearful world (will I be safe? what about the kids? what are the risks?), Gandalf offers a kind reminder that our mere existence is the cause of much danger, and adventure .

It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him – Gandalf
The road goes ever on and on

We must continue to walk the road, leaving old mistakes and success behind, for there is still much to do.

Gandalf: I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone. Bilbo: I should think so—in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can’t think what anybody sees in them … Gandalf:  You’ll have a tale or two to tell when you come back Bilbo:  You can promise that I’ll come back?” Gandalf:  No. And if you do, you will not be the same

We often do not want to change, we want to remain the same. Nasty, disturbing thing, change. Yet when the call of adventure sings in our ear, we feel a stirring in our souls to follow. At this point, our friends and family may be equally hesitant for us to change, because they know we will not be the same! This tension can the cause of a lot of pain , but does not mean we should resist.

Now is the time for Bilbo to perform the service for which he was included in our company ; now is the time for him to earn his reward – Thorin

Remember you are called to act, to fulfill the role you were made for . Fighting against your call is fruitless, for you will never be content until you have acted. Earn your keep.

Surely you don’t disbelieve the prophecies just because you helped them come about. You don’t really suppose do you that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck? Just for your sole benefit? You’re a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I’m quite fond of you. But you are really just a little fellow, in a wide world after all – Gandalf

We can easily be pulled in to the temptation to think we have done everything ourselves, our success is a direct result of our performance, and that we deserve our success. But we must remember there is a lot of variance in the world, and we are just a small piece of a larger game.

You will have to manage without pocket-handkerchiefs, and a good many other things, before you get to the journey’s end – Dwalin

I know I can go on a trip (or even to work) believing I need   certain things. When I went to Haiti last December, I brought far too much. Even in my day-to-day life, I go about thinking I need this or that to be happy, when in reality my happiness is received by much simpler things, and mostly by people. I can manage without a good many things.

Bilbo had many hardships and adventures before he got back. The wild was still the wild

We believe that once we’ve reached the summit, once the quest has been completed, that life will return to normal, or we will live in great fame. Not true. The wild is still the wild after all, and we have duty to fulfill. We must return, yes! But we must also contribute, and contribution is a dangerous, life-changing act. Contribute daily.

There is a lot more in Bilbo than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself – Gandalf

Perhaps there is a lot more in you than you guess. Or in your spouse. Or in your kids. Or in your friends. You should find out, not all journeys involve leaving your home.

If you have some of your own to share, either before or after viewing, let us know in the comments!

The Hobbit   is one of my all-time favorite books. It contains the best elements of fantasy, adventure, and humor, unforgettable characters, and plenty of daring-do. Here are 37 of my favorite quotes:

“Trolls simply detest the sight of dwarves (uncooked).” + 36 More Best Lines from 'The Hobbit'

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hold, and that means comfort.”

“There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something…You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after.”

“May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks.”

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

“Gandalf, dwarves, and Mr. Baggins! We are met together in the house of our friend and fellow conspirator, this most excellent and audacious hobbit–may the hair on his toes never fall out! All praise to his wine and ale!”

“Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling anyway.”

“Trolls simply detest the sight of dwarves (uncooked).”

“Is it nice, my preciousss? Is it juicy? Is it scrumptiously crunchable?”

“Elvish singing is not a thing to miss, in June under the stars, not if you care for such things.”

“Your lullaby would waken a drunken goblin!”

“Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin’s Day will shine upon the key-hole.”

“And what would you do, if an uninvited dwarf came and hung his things up in your hall without a word of explanation?”

“If you want to know what cram is, I can only say that I don’t know the recipe; but it is biscuitish, keeps good indefinitely, is supposed to be sustaining, and is certainly not entertaining, being in fact very uninteresting except as a chewing exercise.”

“It seemed like all the way to tomorrow and over it to the days beyond.”

“The quiet was so deep that their feet seemed to thump along while all the trees leaned over them and listened.”

Bilbo the Brave

“This is the story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.”

“We are plain quiet folk, and I have no use for adventures. Nasty, disturbing, and uncomfortable things. Make you late for dinner!”

“Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick.”

“Please don’t cook me, kind sirs! I am a good cook myself, and cook better than I cook, if you see what I mean.”

“‘Go back?’ he thought. ‘No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!’ So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.”

“A sudden understanding, a pity mixed with horror, welled up in Bilbo’s heart: a glimpse of endless unmarked days without light or hope of betterment, hard stone, cold sigh, sneaking and whispering. All these thoughts passed in the flash of a second. He trembled. And then quite suddenly in another flash, as if lifted by a new strength and resolve, he leaped.”

“Bilbo saw that the moment had come when he must do something.”

“I come from under hill, and under the hills and over the hills my paths led. And through the air, I am he that walks unseen…I am the clue-finder, the web-cutter, the stinging fly. I was chosen for the lucky number…I am he that buries his friends alive and drowns them and draws them alive again from the water. I came from the end of a bag, but no bag went over me…I am the friend of bears and the guest of eagles. I am Ringwinner and Luckwearer; and I am barrel-rider.”

“That was the most awkward Wednesday he ever remembered.”

The Best of Gandalf

“Gandalf thought of most things; and though he could not do everything, he could do a great deal for friends in a tight corner.”

“‘What do you mean?’ he said. ‘Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?’”

“‘Where did you go to, if I may ask?’ said Thorin to Gandalf as they rode along. ‘To look ahead,’ said he. ‘And what brought you back in the nick of time?’ ‘Looking behind,’ said he.”

“There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are all over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go.”

“He charged the ranks of the goblins of Mount Gram in the Battle of the Green Fields, and knocked their king Golfimbul’s head clean off with a wooden club. It sailed a hundred yards through the air and went down a rabbit-hole, and in this way the battle was won and the game of Golf invented in the same moment.”

“Every worm has his weak spot.”

“My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws pears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!”

“Truly songs and tales fall utterly short of the reality, O Smaug the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities.”

“‘You have nice manners for a thief and a liar,’ said the dragon.”

“No dragon can resist the fascination of riddling talk and of wasting time trying to understand it.”

“It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.”

“So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending!”

Bilbo Baggins changes from a mild, home-loving hobbit to a brave one who is willing to risk his life in defense of his friends and in order to save their home . While he never loses the parts of himself that are integral to his character– a love for song, food, drink, and home.

The Hobbit Important Quotes

Courage

Let’s have no more argument. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you. If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. You may (possibly) all live to thank me yet.

These lines come from the first chapter of The Hobbit and are spoken by the wizard, Gandalf. He is reacting to Bilbo and the dwarves’ belief that he’s wrong in his selection of the hobbit for this particular job and journey. To the dwarves, not to mention Bilbo himself, Bilbo is a simple person. He’s quite small, not partially strong or clever seeming, and is certainly very much attached to his home. Plus, the hobbit has no stake in the quest.

The dwarves, and likely the reader, are all doubtful that he’ll make a very good “burglar.” But, Gandalf attempts to assuage their doubts (while also silencing any protests) by telling everyone that there is a “more” to him than anyone knows, even himself. These lines are a great example of foreshadowing. They allude to the courage Bilbo’s soon going to find and the important role he plays in their quest.

There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Thorin speaks these lines when talking to Bilbo in Chapter 18, shortly before he dies. He asks Bilbo’s forgiveness for the way he spoke to him before the Battle of the Five Armies while also acknowledging the important role Bilbo played in their quest. There is “more” to Bilbo, Thorin realizes, just as Gandalf promised at the beginning of the novel. Thorin also comments on the fact that if more people cared about what Bilbo cares about, “food and cheer and song,” then the world would be a better place.

He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath. ‘I will give you a name,’ he said to it, ‘and I shall call you Sting.’

In these lines, which come from Chapter 8, Bilbo thinks about how he’s just killed the giant spider. He felt “fiercer and bolder” despite the fact that he’s hungry—something that would’ve consumed his thoughts had he been at home. This is a turning point for Bilbo. He now knows how courageous and strong he can be. He’s capable of taking the initiative and protecting his friends as much as they are capable of protecting him. He also names his sword in these lines. When he does so, he marks the sword’s importance to him and in a specific battle.

This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.

In the first chapter of The Hobbit, the narrator describes Bilbo with the above lines. This sentence sets the stage for the tale that’s going to follow. The narrator tells the reader that Bilbo is going to change, stretch himself, and find himself doing things he never thought he would. This is an exciting way to begin a novel and should inspire the reader to find out exactly what the narrator is alluding to.

Greed and Treasure

“This is the Arkenstone of Thrain,” said Bilbo, “the Heart of the Mountain; and it is also the heart of Thorin. He values it above a river of gold. I give it to you. It will aid you in your bargaining.

In these lines from Chapter 16, Bilbo is speaking to the Wood-elves and to Bard. He’s handing over the Arkenstone that Thorin so greedily lusts after. Bilbo knows that he must betray Thorin in order to save him from himself and perhaps avert an even worse outcome to the events about the play out at the Lonely Mountain. Thorin believes if he can get possession of the stone then his birthright will be realized and he’ll finally come to fully own the treasure in the mountain. It’s a symbol of his greed and the way that treasure corrupts. It finally takes the Battle of the Five Armies for the two sides to unite against a common foe.

He guessed as well as he could, and crawled along for a good way, till suddenly his hand met what felt like a tiny ring of cold metal lying on the floor of the tunnel.

At this point, in Chapter 5, when Bilbo discovers the ring for the first time, all it is is a bit of “cold metal lying on the floor.” He has no idea what its importance is or how it is going to change him. He thinks it’s a nice find, something to take home with him. He puts it in his pocket, soon to realize the power it holds.

There it is: dwarves are not heroes, but calculating folk with a great idea of the value of money; some are tricky and treacherous and pretty bad lots; some are not, but are decent enough people like Thorin and Company, if you don’t expect too much.

These lines come from Chapter 12 of The Hobbit. The narrator describes how the dwarves would do what they could to save Bilbo, should he ever fall into harm’s way, and they would certainly pay him for the “nasty job” they brought him along to complete. But, they are themselves “not heroes.” Their greed is part of who they are and they can’t change that. Just like the hobbits are simple folk who love their homes, song and drink, the dwarves are greedy and sometimes deceptive, the orcs and goblins are evil, and so on.

10 Unsolved Mysteries from the Lord of the Rings Canon

George r.r. martin's lotr criticism misses the point of gandalf's death, 4 lord of the rings stories that would have been better than a gollum spinoff.

  • Tolkien's quotes encourage embracing adventure, stepping out of comfort zones and trying new things.
  • The smallest steps can lead to great travels - progress in adventures may be slow, but determination is key.
  • Facing the unknown can be daunting, but escaping comfort zones can lead to extraordinary experiences.

J.R.R. Tolkien took readers on grand journeys in his writing leaving plenty of inspiring Tolkien quotes about adventure that can be meaningful to anyone. Tolkien’s works explore many different themes, but one of the central takeaways of his stories is that even the unlikeliest of people can have the grandest of adventures. In The Hobbit and his Lord of the Rings books, though there was plenty of danger to be found, it was all about the idea of embracing the adventure that lies before his characters and making the most of it.

Tolkien's iconic characters obviously found themselves on the more stereotypical adventures, fighting dragons and battling evil forces. However, within Tolkien's writings are the encouragement of all people to seek out adventure in life. That does not mean dropping everything to commit to dangerous expeditions, but could be the everyday adventures of stepping outside of comfort zones and trying something new. While it can be scary, these quotes from the author himself offer the kind of inspiration people sometimes need.

The Lord of the Rings is famous for its expansive nature, but there were still a few things that J.R.R. Tolkien left unanswered.

8 "Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost."

The fellowship of the ring, the lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is the first film in Peter Jackson's critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings trilogy. The movie follows Frodo Baggins (Elijah Woods) as he is tasked with destroying the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom after he inherits the ring.

Tolkien likes to challenge people's perception of the world even within his stories that are set in Middle-earth . This quote speaks to those people in life who seem to be in search of something but never find it . While others may look at those people with pity and wonder when they will be able to stop wandering and settle, that misses the point that the search might be part of the pleasure.

It is possible to venture out into the world without knowing where to go. The directionless pursuit can be daunting, but that is also when people often stumble upon something great or beautiful accidentally. Knowing the end goal can be helpful, but just because a person doesn't have one in mind doesn't mean they need one in order to have a purpose.

7 "You Step Onto The Road, And If You Don't Keep Your Feet, There's No Knowing Where You Might Be Swept Off To."

Just as wandering without direction can be freeing, some of the best experiences come from having no plans at all. Frodo remembers this advice given to him as he faces his own great adventure and how getting the courage to start can be the hardest part. Frodo proves himself to be the bravest of the characters in the story, not because he is the most powerful Lord of the Rings character , but because he is willing to venture further than he ever has without knowing what awaits him.

There is comfort and security to knowing what is in store every day.

This courage can be found in everyday people even if it is not celebrated as much as it should be. There is comfort and security to knowing what is in store every day. However, embracing the fear of the unplanned can be exciting and something that can only be experienced by taking those first steps.

6 "Home Is Behind, The World Ahead."

There is nothing wrong with enjoying the comfort of home. However, such comfort can be a prison at times and it is important to escape it, no matter how reluctant a person is to do so. This inspiring phrase is featured in one of Bilbo Baggins' songs in The Lord of the Rings and is also used by Gandalf in the first of the Hobbit movies to encourage him on in his journey .

The phrase is perfect for those who fear leaving the house but do so anyway. While it is all too easy to return to the comfort of home, this is a reminder that once out the door, there is a whole world ahead and no time to look back . Once an adventure begins, embrace the fun of it and never worry about how to get things back to normal.

5 "Little By Little, One Travels Far."

Long journeys can seem daunting. But just like everything else in life, they’re completed one step at a time. Whether it’s a grueling hike or an undergraduate degree, the only way to get to the end is to keep moving, even if it’s slowly. No matter how small a person's stride is, as long as they take enough steps, they'll be able to travel further than they ever imagined.

No adventure worth taking is completed with ease and the progress will sometimes be slower than people hope. However, determination and persistence are enough to achieve great things. Tolkien loves to remind readers of what can be accomplished by the smallest and most unassuming people, as with his heroic Hobbit characters.

4 "The Wide World Is All About You: You Can Fence Yourselves In, But You Cannot For Ever Fence It Out."

Sometimes leaving the comfort of one's life is not something they should do, but something they have to do. Frodo lived a peaceful life in The Shire , never really wondering much about the world beyond. However, the One Ring brings news of a great danger that faces all of Middle-earth. With this quote, Gandalf warns Frodo that he cannot hide from the reality of the world forever and, like it or not, he will be faced with it.

It is a powerful quote that is something that remains applicable to modern times. There are things in the world that are uncomfortable, unpleasant, and difficult. However, shutting the door and pretending these things do not exist will not truly make them go away . Everyone is confronted with the real world sooner or later and it is best to face it head on.

3 "Then Something Tookish Woke Up Inside Him, And He Wished To Go And See The Great Mountains, And Hear The Pine-Trees And The Waterfalls, And Explore The Caves, And Wear A Sword Instead Of A Walking-Stick."

Bilbo Baggins is one of the great reluctant heroes in literature. He is a man content with his easy-going existence until the idea of an adventure is presented to him. He is not forced, paid, or tricked. He is simply presented with the opportunity to take it or not. Though he refuses at first, Bilbo cannot ignore the stirring of adventure and the idea of missing out .

Although part of human nature is to crave stability, it’s not a love of routine that leads people to cross oceans and explore lands unknown. Pursuing adventure is as much a part of humanity as seeking security, and the key to living a full life is finding a balance between these two intrinsic drives. Meeting different people and having new experiences can lead to entirely new perspectives. It is something everyone knows deep down, and it is only a matter of how they react when their feeling for adventure stirs.

2 "Don't Adventures Ever Have An End? I Suppose Not. Someone Else Always Has To Carry On The Story."

The end of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was often criticized for being drawn out and seemingly having multiple endings. Not only did the long conclusion seem earned given the epic trilogy that had been accomplished, but the ending perfectly captures part of the theme Tolkien wrote about. Though one adventure ends, the stories of it will help inspire the next person and the next, ensuring that it forever continues.

For those who love adventure, it can be scary to imagine our escapades coming to an end. However, when it is finally time to settle down, the adventure never truly comes to an end, as long as it lives on in the memories that are shared . Frodo might never have gone on his own adventure without the stories of Bilbo's quest. Sometimes, hearing the experiences of others makes people want to make their own.

1 "The World Is Not In Your Books And Maps, It Is Out There."

The hobbit: an unexpected journey (2012), the hobbit: an unexpected journey.

As Bilbo Baggins celebrates his 111th birthday, he recounts the extraordinary journey that changed his life. Guided by the enigmatic wizard Gandalf, Bilbo joins a band of Dwarves on a perilous quest to reclaim their homeland from the fearsome dragon, Smaug. Along the way, they face treacherous foes, unearth long-buried secrets, and discover unexpected courage within themselves. With danger lurking at every turn, Bilbo's adventure unfolds in a tale of friendship, sacrifice, and the enduring power of hope.

There are also endless opportunities to explore the world through reading and researching without ever having to leave home.

Thanks to great authors like Tolkien, the world has been given the chance to experience grand adventures within the pages of their books. There are also endless opportunities to explore the world through reading and researching without ever having to leave home. These avenues are important and learning is the key to broadening a person's mind. However, there is also nothing like experience itself.

There are things that can simply not be read in a book, seen in a movie, or drawn on a map. To go out in the world is to truly understand what it is about . It is by seeing the world and trying new things that those books get filled in the first place. Indeed, both Bilbo and Frodo needed to leave the Shire and see the rest of Middle-earth in order to complete their stories that could be passed on to others.

John Ronald Reuel, J.R.R., Tolkien has inspired generations of fantasy lovers since he published his classic fiction series  The Lord of the Rings  and its prequel The Hobbit in 1948 and 1932, respectively. From movies and visual media to costumes and figurines, it's hard not to become immersed in the world Tolkien created.

Middle-earth, as it is now known, has its own map, language and species of human-like creatures . His fictional world has become so commonplace today that it's almost as if it is real.

You'll still see people dressed as Gandalf on Halloween and find people debating the books' lore on Reddit. Dragons, wizards and elves are very much alive in Tolkien's world, and he brings them to life in such a convincing way that you might find yourself asking if they just may be hidden as one of the world's best kept secrets.

But the true reason why The Lord of the Rings  and  The Hobbit  have survived this long in our hearts is because Tolkien wrote in a way no other author had ever written before. He included songs and limericks, poems, sketches and more that made his storytelling come to life. He could really show his readers everything he needed to about Middle-earth and fashion dynamic characters that we all fell in love with in the process.

Even if you haven’t read the books, you can appreciate Tolkien’s attention to detail and his love for the craft.

35+ The Hobbit Quotes To Inspire Your Own Adventure

The Hobbit quotes

Bilbo Baggins was a small man… maybe three feet? That’s to be expected of Hobbits, of course. Less expected of Hobbits? To be brave adventurers. Before the many adventures that he undertook, Bilbo was a rather squirrelly hobbit. While certainly polite and friendly enough, he had no interest in seeing what fun lay in the world beyond his home at Bag End. And yet, as we witnessed many times afterward, Gandalf could be quite a convincing wizard. When he asked Bilbo to set out to travel , it took some persuasion. But what Hobbit doesn’t love a good story to tell? None, if we’re going by The Hobbit quotes.

The Hobbit might just be our favorite book by fantasy genre author J.R.R. Tolkien. While we’ll happily sit through all three Lord of the Rings movies any day of the week, we lived for the traveling tales of young(er) Bilbo. Say what you want about Tolkien (and there’s plenty to say), the world he created and the characters he conjured will always be our favorites. These quotes are just a sampling of some of Tolkien’s writing and some of the wonderful and inspiring moments from The Hobbit .

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

  • Galadriel : Mithrandir? Why the Halfling?
  • Gandalf : I don't know. Saruman believes that it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. I've found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid, and he gives me courage.
  • Bilbo Baggins : Good morning.
  • Gandalf : What do you mean? Do you mean to wish me a good morning or do you mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not? Or perhaps you mean to say that you feel good on this particular morning. Or are you simply stating that this is a morning to be good on?
  • Bilbo Baggins : All of them at once, I suppose.
  • Bilbo Baggins : I have... I have never used a sword in my life.
  • Gandalf : And I hope you never have to. But if you do, remember this: true courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.
  • Gandalf : Well, why does it matter? He's back!
  • Thorin Oakenshield : It matters. I want to know - why did you come back?
  • Bilbo Baggins : Look, I know you doubt me, I know you always have. And you're right. I often think of Bag End. I miss my books. And my armchair. And my garden. See, that's where I belong. That's home. That's why I came back, 'cause you don't have one. A home. It was taken from you. But I will help you take it back if I can.
  • Gandalf : You will have to do without pocket handkerchiefs, and a great many other things, before we reach our journey's end, Bilbo Baggins. You were born to the rolling hills and little rivers of the Shire, but home is now behind you. The world is ahead.
  • Radagast : I'll draw them off.
  • Gandalf : These are Gundabad wargs. They will outrun you!
  • Radagast : These are Rhosgobel rabbits. I'd like to see them try.
  • Balin : It's just the usual; summary of out-of-pocket expenses, time required, remuneration, funeral arrangements, so forth.
  • Bilbo Baggins : Funeral arrangements?
  • [ reads contract ]
  • Bilbo Baggins : Oh, up to but not exceeding one fourteenth total profit if any. Seems fair. Present company shall not be liable for injuries including but not limited to laceration, evisceration... incineration?
  • Bofur : Oh, aye. He'll melt the flesh off your bones in the blink of an eye.
  • Balin : You all right, laddie?
  • Bilbo Baggins : Yeah, I'll be. Feel a bit faint
  • Bofur : Think furnace, with wings.
  • Bilbo Baggins : Yeah, I-I-I need air
  • Bofur : Flash of light, searing pain, then poof, you're nothing more than a pile of ash.
  • Bilbo Baggins : [ long pause ] Nope.
  • Gandalf : Very helpful, Bofur.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : [ singing ] Far over the misty mountains cold / To dungeons deep and caverns old / We must away at break of day / to find our long forgotten gold
  • Dwarves : [ singing ] The pines were roaring on the height / The winds were moaning in the night / The fire was red, it flame spread / The trees like torches blazed with light...
  • Balin : [ after overhearing Bilbo tell Gandalf he will not join the Dwarves on their journey ] It appears we have lost our burglar. Probably for the best. The odds were always against us. After all, what are we? Merchants, miners, tinkerers, toy-makers. Hardly the stuff of legend.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : There are a few warriors amongst us.
  • Balin : Old warriors.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : I would take each and every one of these Dwarves over an army from the Iron Hills. For when I called upon them, they answered. Loyalty. Honor. A willing heart... I can ask no more than that.
  • Balin : You don't have to do this. You have a choice. You've done honorably by our people. You have built a new life for us in the Blue Mountains, a life of peace, and plenty. A life that is worth more than all the gold in Erebor.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : [ He holds up the key Gandalf has given him ] From my grandfather to my father, this has come to me. They dreamt of the day when the Dwarves of Erebor would reclaim their homeland. There is no choice Balin. Not for me.
  • Balin : Then we are with you, laddie. We will see it done.
  • Gandalf : I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure.
  • Bilbo Baggins : An adventure? No, I don't imagine anyone west of Bree would have much interest in adventures. Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things. Make you late for dinner.
  • Dori : [ regarding a piece of lettuce ] Try it. Just a mouthful.
  • Ori : I don't like green food.
  • Dwalin : Where's the meat?
  • Ori : Have they got any chips?
  • Gollum : Is he lost?
  • Bilbo Baggins : Yes, yes, and I want to get unlost... as soon as possible!
  • Gollum : Oh! We knows! We knows safe paths for hobbitses! Safe paths in the dark... SHUT UP!
  • Bilbo Baggins : I didn't say anything...
  • Gollum : Wasn't talking to you!
  • Thorin Oakenshield : Where did you go, if I may ask?
  • Gandalf : To look ahead.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : And what brought you back?
  • Gandalf : Looking behind.
  • Hobbit : You! Mr. Bilbo, where're you off to?
  • Bilbo Baggins : I'm already late.
  • Hobbit : Late for what?
  • Bilbo Baggins : I'm going on an adventure!
  • Thorin Oakenshield : I cannot guarantee his safety.
  • Gandalf : Understood.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : Nor will I be responsible for his fate.
  • Gandalf : Agreed.
  • Old Bilbo : It began long ago in a land far away to the east, the like of which you will not find in the world today. There was the city of Dale, its markets known far and wide, full of the bounties of vine and vale, peaceful and prosperous. For this city lay before the doors of the greatest kingdom in Middle-Earth: Erebor, stronghold of Thrór, King under the Mountain and mightiest of the Dwarf-Lords. Thrór ruled with utter surety, never doubting his house would endure, for his line lay secure in the lives of his son and grandson. Ah, Frodo, Erebor! Built deep within the mountain itself, the beauty of this fortress city was legend. Its wealth lay in the earth in precious gems hewn from rock and in great seams of gold running like rivers through stone. The skill of the Dwarves was unequalled, fashioning objects of great beauty out of diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire. Ever they delved deep, down into the dark and that is where they found it, the Heart of the Mountain... the Arkenstone. Thrór named it the King's Jewel, he took it as a sign, a sign that his right to rule was divine. All would pay homage to him, even the great Elven King Thranduil. But the years of peace and plenty was not to last. Slowly the days turned sour and the watchful nights closed in. Thrór's love of gold grown too fierce and sickness had begun to grow within him. It was a sickness of the mind. And where sickness thrives, bad things will follow...
  • Bofur : [ after falling ] Well, that could have been worse...
  • [ Great Goblin falls on the dwarves ]
  • Dwalin : Oh, you've got to be joking!
  • Kili : [ Kili is gently flirting with an Elf maid when he catches Dwalin glaring at him ] I can't say I fancy Elves myself, too thin. They're all high cheekbones and creamy skin. Not enough facial hair for me.
  • [ He motions to an Elf walking behind him ]
  • Kili : Although, that one there's not bad.
  • Dwalin : That's not an Elf maid.
  • [ the Elf turns around, revealing that he is indeed a male ]
  • Kili : [ the Dwarves burst out laughing at Kili's mistake ] That's funny.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : You! What were you doing? You nearly got yourself killed! Did I not say that you would be a burden, that you would not survive in the wild and that you have no place amongst us? I've never been so wrong in all my life.
  • [ Thorin embraces Bilbo ]
  • Gandalf : The world is not in your books and maps. It's out there.
  • Bilbo Baggins : I can't just go running off into the blue! I am a Baggins of Bag End!
  • Gandalf : You are also a Took. Did you know that your Great-Great-Great-Great Uncle Bullroarer Took was so large he could ride a real horse?
  • Bilbo Baggins : Yes.
  • Gandalf : Well he could! In the Battle of Greenfields, he charged the Goblin ranks. He swung his club so hard it knocked the Goblin King's head cleaned off and it sailed a hundred yards through the air and went down a rabbit hole. And thus the battle was won and the game of golf invented at the same time.
  • Bilbo Baggins : I do believe you made that up.
  • Gandalf : Well, all good stories deserve embellishment. You'll have a tale or two to tell of your own when you come back.
  • Bilbo Baggins : ...Can you promise that I will come back?
  • Gandalf : No. And if you do... you will not be the same.
  • Old Bilbo : In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole full of worms and oozy smells. This was a hobbit-hole and that means good food, a warm hearth, and all the comforts of home.
  • Bilbo Baggins : I just need to sit quietly for a moment.
  • Gandalf : You've been sitting quietly for far too long!
  • Thorin Oakenshield : And I am sorry for doubting you.
  • Bilbo Baggins : No, it's fine. I would have doubted me too. I'm not a hero, or a warrior...
  • [ looks up at Gandalf ]
  • Bilbo Baggins : ... Not even a burglar.
  • Frodo : [ finds a manuscript ] What's this?
  • Old Bilbo : That is private, keep your sticky paws off! It's not ready yet!
  • Frodo : Not ready for what?
  • Old Bilbo : Reading!
  • Bilbo Baggins : Why don't we have a game of riddles... Just, just you and me.
  • Gollum : [ comes towards Bilbo; as Friendly Gollum ] Just... Just us?
  • Bilbo Baggins : Yes... Yes! And if I win, you...
  • [ gestures ]
  • Bilbo Baggins : ...You show me the way out, yes?
  • Gollum : [ nods ] Yes, Yes...
  • [ Gollum's pupils narrow as he becomes Treacherous Gollum. He growls as he back into the shadows; Bilbo looks uneasy ]
  • Gollum : [ sinister whisper ] And if it loses... what then?
  • [ Gollum blinks; as Friendly Gollum ]
  • Gollum : Well... if it loses, Precious. then we EATS it!
  • [ Gollum giggles sinisterly; then he turns to Bilbo ]
  • Gollum : [ casually ] And if Baggins loses, then we eats it whole.
  • [ Gollum smiles and shrugs ]
  • Bilbo Baggins : [ after a long pause ] Fair enough.
  • [ Bilbo attempts to sneak out of the cave while the company sleeps but is stopped by Bofur ]
  • Bofur : Where do you think you're going?
  • Bilbo Baggins : Back to Rivendell.
  • Bofur : No. No. You can't turn back now. You're part of the company. You're one of us.
  • Bilbo Baggins : I'm not now, am I? Thorin said I should have never have come and he was right. I'm not a Took, I'm a Baggins. I don't know what I was thinking. I should never have run out my door.
  • Bofur : You're homesick. I understand.
  • Bilbo Baggins : No you don't. You don't understand. None of you do. You're Dwarves. You're use to this life, to living on the road, never settling in one place, not belonging anywhere!
  • Bilbo Baggins : [ Bofur's expression falls and immediately Bilbo realizes he has gone too far ] I'my sorry, I didn't...
  • Bofur : [ Bofur nods his head and looks around at the sleeping company ] No you're right. We don't belong anywhere.
  • Bofur : I wish you all the luck in the world. I really do.
  • [ He smiles and pats Bilbo's arm ]
  • Old Bilbo : The first they heard was a noise like a hurricane coming down from the North. The pines on the mountain creaked and cracked in the hot, dry wind. It was a fire-drake from the North. Smaug had come! Such wanton death was dealt that day, for this city of Men was nothing to Smaug. His eye was set on another prize. For dragons covet gold with a dark and fierce desire. Erebor was lost - for a dragon will guard his plunder as long as he lives. Thranduil would not risk the lives of his kin against the wroth of the dragon. No help came from the Elves that day... or any day since. Robbed of their homeland, the Dwarves of Erebor wandered the wilderness, a once mighty people brought low. The young Dwarf prince took work where he could find it, labouring in the villages of Men. But always he remembered the mountain smoke beneath the moon, the trees like torches blazing bright, for he had seen dragon fire in the sky and a city turned to ash. And he never forgave... and he never forgot.
  • Balin : Don't mind him, laddie. Thorin has more cause than most to hate Orcs. After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain, King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria... but our enemy had got there first. Moria had been taken by legions of Orcs, led by the most vile of all their race, Azog the Defiler. The giant Gundabad Orc had sworn to wipe out the line of Durin. He began by beheading the King. Thrain, Thorin's father, was driven mad by grief. He went missing, taken prisoner or killed; we did not know. We were leaderless, defeat and death were upon us. That is when I saw him; the young dwarf prince facing down the Pale Orc. He stood alone against this terrible foe, his armour rent, wielding nothing but an oaken branch as a shield... Azog the Defiler learned that day that the line of Durin would not be so easily broken. Our forces rallied and drove the Orcs back; our enemy had been defeated... but there was no feast or songs that night, for our dead were beyond the count of grief. We few had survived and I thought to myself then 'There is one I could follow. There is one I could call King'.
  • Dori : Mr. Gandalf, can't you do something about this deluge?
  • Gandalf : It is raining, Master dwarf, and it will continue to rain until the rain is done. If you wish to change the weather of the world, you should find yourself another wizard.
  • Bilbo Baggins : Are there any?
  • Gandalf : What?
  • Bilbo Baggins : Other wizards?
  • Gandalf : There are five of us. The greatest of our order is Saruman the White. And then there are the two Blue Wizards... You know, I've quite forgotten their names.
  • Bilbo Baggins : And the fifth?
  • Gandalf : Well, that would be Radagast the Brown.
  • Bilbo Baggins : Is he a great wizard, or is he more like you?
  • Gandalf : Well, I think he is a very great wizard... in his own way. He's a gentle soul who prefers the company of animals for others. He keeps a watchful eye over the vast forest lands to the East, and a good thing too. For always evil will look to find a foothold in this world.
  • [ Lord Elrond arrives at Rivendell. He greets the Dwarves, speaking in Elvish ]
  • Gloin : What does he say? Does he offer us insult?
  • Gandalf : No Master Gloin, he's offering you food.
  • [ the Dwarves quickly have a quiet discussion amongst themselves ]
  • Gloin : Very well then. Lead on!
  • Galadriel : You carry something. It came to you from Radagast. He found it in Dol Guldur.
  • Gandalf : Yes.
  • Galadriel : Show it to me.
  • [ Gandalf takes out a package ]
  • Elrond : What is that?
  • Galadriel : A relic... of Mordor.
  • Elrond : A Morgul-blade!
  • Galadriel : Made for the Witch-king of Angmar and buried with him. When Angmar fell, the Men of the North took his body and all that he possessed and sealed it within the High Fells of Rhudaur. Deep within the rock, they buried him. In a tomb so dark, it would never come to light.
  • Elrond : This is not possible. A powerful spell lies upon those tombs, they can NOT be opened.
  • Saruman : What proof do we have this weapon came from Angmar's grave?
  • Gandalf : I can find none.
  • Saruman : Because there IS none! Let us examine what we know: A single Orc pack has dared to cross the Bruinen, a dagger from a bygone age has been found and a human sorcerer who calls himself the Necromancer has taken up residence in a ruined fortress. It's not so very much. After all, the question of this Dwarvish company, however, troubles me deeply. I'm not convinced, Gandalf. I do not feel I can condone such a quest. If they had come to me, I might have spared them from this disappointment...
  • Galadriel : [ while Saruman talks ] They are leaving.
  • Galadriel : [ smiles ] You knew.
  • Kili : [ the ground suddenly begins to split beneath them during the thunder battle, with each brother jumping to a different side of the crack as it widens ] What's happening?
  • Fili : [ Reaches desperately towards his brother ] Kili, grab my hand! Ki...
  • Kili : [ a look of terror cross his face as the cliff face his brother is on moves further away ] Fili!
  • Gandalf : I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me.
  • Bilbo Baggins : Can I help you?
  • Gandalf : That remains to be seen.
  • Galadriel : The dragon has long been on your mind.
  • Gandalf : This is true, my lady. Smaug owes allegiance to no one, but if he should side with the Enemy... A dragon could be used to terrible effect.
  • Saruman : What enemy? Gandalf, the Enemy is defeated. Sauron is vanquished. He can never regain his full strength.
  • Elrond : Gandalf, for four hundred years, we have lived in peace - a hard-won, watchful peace.
  • Gandalf : Are we, are we at peace? Trolls have come down from the mountains, they are raiding villages, destroying farms. Orcs have attacked us on the road!
  • Elrond : Hardly a prelude to war.
  • Saruman : Always you must meddle, looking for trouble when none exist...
  • Galadriel : Let him speak.
  • Gandalf : There is something at work beyond the evil of Smaug. Something far more powerful. We could remain blind to it but it will not be ignoring us, that I can promise you. A sickness lies over the Greenwood. The Woodsmen who live there now call it Mirkwood and, uh, they say...
  • Saruman : Well, don't stop now. Tell us what the Woodsmen say.
  • Gandalf : They speak of a Necromancer living in Dol Guldur, a sorcerer who could summon the dead.
  • Saruman : That's absurd. No such power exists in this world. This "Necromancer" is nothing more than a mortal man, a conjurer dabbling in black magic.
  • Gandalf : And so I thought too, but Radagast had seen...
  • Saruman : Radagast? Do not speak to me of Radagast the Brown. He is a foolish fellow.
  • Gandalf : Well, he's odd, I'll grant you. He lives a solitary life...
  • Saruman : It's not that. It's his excessive consumption of mushrooms! They've addled his brain and yellowed his teeth!
  • Bilbo Baggins : [ as Dwarves start musically banging cutlery on the tables ] Careful! You'll blunt them!
  • Bofur : [ Amused ] Oh, did you hear that, lads? He says we'll blunt the knives!
  • Dwarves : [ Gleefully singing ] Blunt the knives! Bend the forks! Smash the bottles and burn the corks! Chip the glasses and crack the plates! That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
  • Thorin Oakenshield : Out of the frying pan...
  • Gandalf : ...and into the fire. Run. Run!
  • Bilbo Baggins : [ to the trolls, about cooking the dwarves ] Well, I mean, have you smelled them? You're going to need something a lot stronger than sage before you can plate this lot up!
  • Great Goblin : You thought you could escape *Me*?
  • [ He swings his mace, knocking Gandalf backwards; the dwarves stop Gandalf from toppling ]
  • Great Goblin : [ mockingly ] What are you going to do now, wizard?
  • [ Gandalf pokes the Great Goblin in the eye with his stick, then cuts straight through his large belly with his sword ]
  • Great Goblin : [ his last words before Gandalf cuts his throat ] ... That'll do it...
  • Great Goblin : Well, well, well... look who it is! Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror, King Under the Mountain!
  • [ bows mockingly ]
  • Great Goblin : Oh, but I'm forgetting, you don't have a mountain, and you're not a king, which makes you nobody, really.
  • Ori : That's why we need a burglar!
  • Bilbo Baggins : Hmmm, and a good one too, I would say. An expert.
  • Gloin : And are you?
  • Bilbo Baggins : [ looks behind him, then back ] Am I what?
  • Oin : He said he's an expert! Hey hey!
  • [ as the trolls are roasting half a dozen of the dwarves on a spit over a fire ]
  • Bilbo Baggins : Wait, wait! You are making a terrible mistake!
  • Bert Troll : Eh?
  • Dori : You can't reason with them, they're half-wits!
  • Bofur : Half-wits? What does that make us?
  • Bilbo Baggins : My name is Bilbo Baggins!
  • Gollum : Baggines? What is Bagginses?... Precious.
  • [ Bilbo opens the door ]
  • Dwalin : Dwalin, at your service.
  • Bilbo Baggins : Um...
  • Bilbo Baggins : Bilbo Baggins, at yours.
  • [ first lines ]
  • Old Bilbo : My dear Frodo, you asked me once if I had told you everything there was to know about my adventures. And while I can honestly say I've told you the truth, I may not have told you all of it. I am old, Frodo. I am not the same hobbit as I once was. It is time for you to know what really happened.
  • Gandalf : Far to the east, over ranges and rivers lies a single solitary peak.
  • Gandalf : When did doilies and your mother's dishes become so important to you?
  • Gandalf : Here lies the Last Homely House East of the Sea.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : This was your plan all along - to seek refuge with our enemy?
  • Gandalf : You have no enemies here, Thorin Oakenshield. The only ill will to be found in this valley is that which you bring yourself.
  • Thorin Oakenshield : You think the Elves will give our quest their blessing? They will try to stop us.
  • Gandalf : Of course they will. But we have questions that need to be answered. If we are to be successful this will need to be handled with tact, and respect, and no small degree of charm, which is why you will leave the talking to me.
  • Great Goblin : [ singing ] Bones will be shattered, necks will be wrung! You'll be beaten and battered, from racks you'll be hung! You will die down here and never be found, down in the deep of Goblin Town!
  • Bilbo Baggins : [ griping about the dwarves ] They pillaged the pantry. I'm not even going to tell you what they've done to the bathroom, they all but destroyed the plumbing. I don't understand; what are they doing in my house?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Gandalf: I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure.

Thorin Oakenshield: [singing] Far over the misty mountains cold / To dungeons deep and caverns old

Dwarves: [singing] The pines were roaring on the height / The winds were moaning in the night / The fire was red, it flame spread / The trees like torches blazed with light...

Thorin Oakenshield: I cannot guarantee his safety.

Gandalf: Understood.

Thorin Oakenshield: Nor will I be responsible for his fate.

Gandalf: Agreed.

Bilbo Baggins: My name is Bilbo Baggins!

Gollum: Baggines? What is Bagginses?... Precious.

Gandalf: You will have to do without pocket handkerchiefs, and a great many other things, before we reach our journey's end, Bilbo Baggins. You were born to the rolling hills and little rivers of the Shire, but home is now behind you. The world is ahead.

Gandalf: Far to the east, over ranges and rivers lies a single solitary peak.

Thorin Oakenshield: So this is the Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins: Why don't we have a game of riddles... Just, just you and me.

Gollum: [comes towards Bilbo; as Friendly Gollum] Just... Just us?

Bilbo Baggins: Yes... Yes! And if I win, you...

Bilbo Baggins: ...You show me the way out, yes?

Gollum: [nods] Yes, Yes...

[Gollum's pupils narrow as he becomes Treacherous Gollum. He growls as he back into the shadows; Bilbo looks uneasy]

Gollum: [sinister whisper] And if it loses... what then?

[Gollum blinks; as Friendly Gollum]

Gollum: Well... if it loses, Precious. then we EATS it!

[Gollum giggles sinisterly; then he turns to Bilbo]

Gollum: [casually] And if Baggins loses, then we eats it whole.

[Gollum smiles and shrugs]

Bilbo Baggins: [after a long pause] Fair enough.

[from trailer]

Gandalf: You asked me to find the fourteenth member of this company and I have chosen Mr. Baggins.

Bilbo Baggins: Me? No! No No No!

Gandalf: Hobbits can pass unseen by most if they choose, which gives us a distinct advantage.

Thorin Oakenshield: Or do we seize this chance to take back Erebor?

Elrond: So this is your purpose, to enter the mountain?

Thorin Oakenshield: What of it?

Elrond: There are some who would not deem it wise.

Bilbo Baggins: I am surrounded by dwarves! What are they doing here?

Gandalf: Oh, they're quite a merry gathering. Once you get used to them.

Hobbit: You! Mr. Bilbo where're you off to?

Bilbo Baggins: I'm already late.

Hobbit: Late for what?

Bilbo Baggins: I'm going on an adventure.

Radagast: A dark power has found its way back into the world.

Bilbo Baggins: I have... I have never used a sword in my life.

Gandalf: And I hope you never have to. But if you do, remember this: true courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.

Dori: Mr. Gandalf, can't you do something about this deluge?

Gandalf: It is raining, Master dwarf, and it will continue to rain until the rain is done. If you wish to change the weather of the world, you should find yourself another wizard.

Bilbo Baggins: Are there any?

Gandalf: What?

Bilbo Baggins: Other wizards?

Gandalf: There are five of us. The greatest of our order is Saruman the White. And then there are the two Blue Wizards... You know, I've quite forgotten their names.

Bilbo Baggins: And the fifth?

Balin: It's just the usual; summary of out-of-pocket expenses, time required, remuneration, funeral arrangements, so forth.

Bilbo Baggins: Funeral arrangements?

[reads contract]

Bilbo Baggins: Oh, up to but not exceeding one fourteenth total profit if any. Seems fair. Present company shall not be liable for injuries including but not limited to laceration, evisceration... incineration?

Bofur: Oh, aye. He'll melt the flesh off your bones in the blink of an eye.

Balin: You all right, laddie?

Bilbo Baggins: Yeah, I'll be. Feel a bit faint

Bofur: Think furnace, with wings.

Bilbo Baggins: Yeah, I-I-I need air

Bofur: Flash of light, searing pain, then poof, you're nothing more than a pile of ash.

Bilbo Baggins: [long pause] Nope.

Gandalf: Very helpful, Bofur.

Gollum: Is he lost?

Bilbo Baggins: Yes, yes, and I want to get unlost... as soon as possible!

Gollum: Oh! We knows! We knows safe paths for hobbitses! Safe paths in the dark... SHUT UP!

Bilbo Baggins: I didn't say anything...

Gollum: Wasn't talking to you!

Bilbo Baggins: Can I help you?

Gandalf: That remains to be seen.

Bilbo Baggins: Good morning.

Gandalf: What do you mean? Do you mean to wish me a good morning or do you mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not? Or perhaps you mean to say that you feel good on this particular morning. Or are you simply stating that this is a morning to be good on?

Bilbo Baggins: All of them at once, I suppose.

Thorin Oakenshield: Where did you go, if I may ask?

Gandalf: To look ahead.

Thorin Oakenshield: And what brought you back?

Gandalf: Looking behind.

Galadriel: Mithrandir... why the Halfling?

Gandalf: ...I don't know. Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. I've found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid... and he gives me courage.

Bilbo Baggins: I just need to sit quietly for a moment.

Gandalf: You've been sitting quietly for far too long!

Gandalf: When did doilies and your mother's dishes become so important to you?

Bilbo Baggins: [to the trolls, about cooking the dwarves] Well, I mean, have you smelled them? You're going to need something a lot stronger than sage before you can plate this lot up!

Oin: I've got parasites the size of me arm!

Great Goblin: You thought you could escape *Me*?

[He swings his mace, knocking Gandalf backwards; the dwarves stop Gandalf from toppling]

Great Goblin: [mockingly] What are you going to do now, wizard?

[Gandalf pokes the Great Goblin in the eye with his stick, then cuts straight through his large belly with his sword]

Great Goblin: [his last words before Gandalf cuts his throat]... That'll do it...

Thorin Oakenshield: And I am sorry for doubting you.

Bilbo Baggins: No, it's fine. I would have doubted me too. I'm not a hero, or a warrior... [looks up at Gandalf]... Not even a burglar.

Radagast: I'll draw them off.

Gandalf: These are Gundabad wargs. They will outrun you!

Radagast: These are Rhosgobel rabbits. I'd like to see them try.

Gandalf: The world is not in your books and maps. It's out there.

Bilbo Baggins: I can't just go running off into the blue! I am a Baggins of Bag End!

Gandalf: You are also a Took. Did you know that your Great-Great-Great-Great Uncle Bullroarer Took was so large he could ride a real horse?

Bilbo Baggins: Yes.

Gandalf: Well he could! In the Battle of Greenfields, he charged the Goblin ranks. He swung his club so hard it knocked the Goblin King's head cleaned off and it sailed a hundred yards through the air and went down a rabbit hole. And thus the battle was won and the game of golf invented at the same time.

Bilbo Baggins: I do believe you made that up.

Gandalf: Well, all good stories deserve embellishment. You'll have a tale or two to tell of your own when you come back.

Bilbo Baggins: ...Can you promise that I will come back?

Gandalf: No. And if you do... you will not be the same.

[Bilbo attempts to sneak out of the cave while the company sleeps but is stopped by Bofur]

Bofur: Where do you think you're going?

Bilbo Baggins: Back to Rivendell.

Bofur: No. No. You can't turn back now. You're part of the company. You're one of us.

Bilbo Baggins: I'm not now, am I? Thorin said I should have never have come and he was right. I'm not a Took, I'm a Baggins. I don't know what I was thinking. I should never have run out my door.

Bofur: You're homesick. I understand.

Bilbo Baggins: No you don't. You don't understand. None of you do. You're Dwarves. You're use to this life, to living on the road, never settling in one place, not belonging anywhere!

Bilbo Baggins: [Bofur's expression falls and immediately Bilbo realizes he has gone too far] I'my sorry, I didn't...

Bofur: [Bofur nods his head and looks around at the sleeping company] No you're right. We don't belong anywhere.

Bofur: I wish you all the luck in the world. I really do. [He smiles and pats Bilbo's arm]

[last lines]

Bilbo Baggins: You're right, I do believe the worst is behind us now.

Thorin Oakenshield: You! What were you doing? You nearly got yourself killed! Did I not say that you would be a burden, that you would not survive in the wild and that you have no place amongst us? I've never been so wrong in all my life. [Thorin embraces Bilbo]

Ori: Have they got any chips?

[Lord Elrond arrives at Rivendell. He greets the Dwarves, speaking in Elvish]

Gloin: What does he say? Does he offer us insult?

Gandalf: No Master Gloin, he's offering you food.

[the Dwarves quickly have a quiet discussion amongst themselves]

Gloin: Very well then. Lead on!

Gandalf: Here lies the Last Homely House East of the Sea.

Thorin Oakenshield: This was your plan all along - to seek refuge with our enemy?

Gandalf: You have no enemies here, Thorin Oakenshield. The only ill will to be found in this valley is that which you bring yourself.

Thorin Oakenshield: You think the Elves will give our quest their blessing? They will try to stop us.

Gandalf: Of course they will. But we have questions that need to be answered. If we are to be successful this will need to be handled with tact, and respect, and no small degree of charm, which is why you will leave the talking to me.

Gandalf: Well, why does it matter? He's back!

Thorin Oakenshield: It matters. I want to know - why did you come back?

Bilbo Baggins: Look, I know you doubt me, I know you always have. And you're right... I often think of Bag End. I miss my books, and my armchair, and my garden. See, that's where I belong, that's home. That's why I came back... 'cause you don't have one, a home. It was taken from you. But I will help you take it back if I can.

Balin: Don't mind him, laddie.

Bofur: [after falling] Well, that could have been worse...

[Great Goblin falls on the dwarves]

Dwalin: Oh you've got to be joking!

Thorin Oakenshield: Rumors have begun to spread, The dragon Smaug has not been seen in many years... Perhaps the vast wealth of our people lies unprotected... perhaps it is time to take back Erebor!

Galadriel: The dragon has long been on your mind.

Gandalf: This is true, my lady. Smaug owes allegiance to no one, but if he should side with the Enemy... A dragon could be used to terrible effect.

Saruman: What enemy? Gandalf, the Enemy is defeated. Sauron is vanquished. He can never regain his full strength.

Elrond: Gandalf, for four hundred years, we have lived in peace - a hard-won, watchful peace.

Gandalf: Are we, are we at peace? Trolls have come down from the mountains, they are raiding villages, destroying farms. Orcs have attacked us on the road!

Elrond: Hardly a prelude to war.

Saruman: Always you must meddle, looking for trouble when none exist...

Galadriel: Let him speak.

Gandalf: There is something at work beyond the evil of Smaug. Something far more powerful. We could remain blind to it but it will not be ignoring us, that I can promise you. A sickness lies over the Greenwood. The Woodsmen who live there now call it Mirkwood and, uh, they say...

Saruman: Well, don't stop now. Tell us what the Woodsmen say.

Gandalf: They speak of a Necromancer living in Dol Guldur, a sorcerer who could summon the dead.

Saruman: That's absurd. No such power exists in this world. This "Necromancer" is nothing more than a mortal man, a conjurer dabbling in black magic.

Gandalf: And so I thought too, but Radagast had seen...

Saruman: Radagast? Do not speak to me of Radagast the Brown. He is a foolish fellow.

Gandalf: Well, he's odd, I'll grant you. He lives a solitary life...

Saruman: It's not that. It's his excessive consumption of mushrooms! They've addled his brain and yellowed his teeth!

[Bilbo opens the door]

Dwalin: Dwalin, at your service.

Bilbo Baggins: Um... [bows] Bilbo Baggins, at yours.

Gandalf: I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me.

Radagast: The Greenwood is sick, Gandalf. A darkness has fallen over it. Nothing grows anymore, at least nothing good. The air is fouled decay, but worst are the webs.

Gandalf: Webs? What do you mean?

Radagast: Spiders, Gandalf. Giant ones. Some kind of spawn of Ungoliant or I'm not a wizard. I followed their trail, they came from... Dol Guldur.

Gandalf: Dol Guldur? But the old fortress is abandoned.

Radagast: No, Gandalf, 'tis not. A dark power dwells in there. Such as I have never felt before. It is the shadow of an ancient horror. One that can summon the spirits of the dead. I saw him, Gandalf, from out of the darkness. A Necromancer has come!

Necromancer: [whispers in an unknown language]

Great Goblin: Well, well, well... look who it is! Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror, King Under the Mountain!

[bows mockingly]

Great Goblin: Oh, but I'm forgetting, you don't have a mountain, and you're not a king, which makes you nobody, really.

Dori: [regarding a piece of lettuce] Try it. Just a mouthful.

Ori: I don't like green food.

Dwalin: Where's the meat?

Elrond: This is Orcrist, the Goblin Cleaver, a famous blade. Made by the High Elves of the West, my kin. [hands it back to Thorin] May it serve you well. [unsheathes Gandalf's sword] And this is Glamdring, the Foe-Hammer, sword of the King of Gondolin. These swords were made for the Goblin Wars long ago...

[Bilbo curiously looks at his own sword's blade]

Balin: Wouldn't bother, lad. Swords are named for the great deeds they do in war.

Bilbo Baggins: What are you saying? That my sword hasn't seen battle?

Balin: Not actually sure it is a sword. More of a letter opener, really.

Balin: [after overhearing Bilbo tell Gandalf he will not join the Dwarves on their journey] It appears we have lost our burglar. Probably for the best. The odds were always against us. After all, what are we? Merchants, miners, tinkerers, toy-makers. Hardly the stuff of legend.

Thorin Oakenshield: There are a few warriors amongst us.

Balin: Old warriors.

Thorin Oakenshield: I would take each and every one of these Dwarves over an army from the Iron Hills. For when I called upon them, they answered. Loyalty. Honor. A willing heart... I can ask no more than that.

Balin: You don't have to do this. You have a choice. You've done honorably by our people. You have built a new life for us in the Blue Mountains, a life of peace, and plenty. A life that is worth more than all the gold in Erebor.

Thorin Oakenshield: [He holds up the key Gandalf has given him] From my grandfather to my father, this has come to me. They dreamt of the day when the Dwarves of Erebor would reclaim their homeland. There is no choice Balin. Not for me.

Balin: Then we are with you, laddie. We will see it done.

Balin: What news from the meeting in Ered Luin? Did they all come?

Thorin Oakenshield: Aye, envoys from all seven kingdoms.

Balin: Ah, all off them!

Dwalin: And what did the Dwarves of the Iron Hills say? Is Dain with us?

Thorin Oakenshield: They will not come. They say this quest is ours and ours alone.

Great Goblin: [singing] Bones will be shattered, necks will be wrung! You'll be beaten and battered, from racks you'll be hung! You will die down here and never be found, down in the deep of Goblin Town!

Great Goblin: [as Gandalf attacks] He wields the Foe-Hammer! The Beater! Bright as daylight!

Kili: [the ground suddenly begins to split beneath them during the thunder battle, with each brother jumping to a different side of the crack as it widens] What's happening?

Fili: [Reaches desperately towards his brother] Kili, grab my hand! Ki...

Kili: [a look of terror cross his face as the cliff face his brother is on moves further away] Fili!

Yazneg: [in Black Speech] The Dwarf-scum, Master... we lost them. Ambushed by Elvish filth, we were...

Azog: I don't want excuses. I want the head of the Dwarf-king!

Yazneg: There was nothing we could do! I barely escaped with my life!

Azog: Far better you had... paid with it.

[throws him into the Wargs' den, and they tear him to pieces]

Azog: [in Black Speech] Do you smell it? The scent of fear? I remember your father reeked of it... Thorin, son of Thrain.

Thorin Oakenshield: Azog the Defiler is no more. He was slain in battle long ago!

Great Goblin: So you think his defiling days are done, do you?

Balin: Ohhh! Evening Brother.

Dwalin: By my beard, you're shorter and wider than last time we met.

Balin: Wider, not shorter. But sharp enough for the both of us.

Ori: That's why we need a burglar!

Bilbo Baggins: hmmm, and I good one too I would say. An Expert

Gloin: And are you?

Bilbo Baggins: [looks behind him then back] am I what?

Oin: He said he's an expert! hey hey!

Balin: I have to agree with Mr. Baggins, he is hardly burglar material.

Dwalin: Aye, the wild is no place for gentle folk who can neither fight nor fend for themselves.

Dwalin: I thought we had lost our burglar.

Thorin Oakenshield: He's been lost ever since he left his home. He should not have come, he has no place among us.

[as the trolls are roasting half a dozen of the dwarves on a spit over a fire]

Bilbo Baggins: Wait, wait! You are making a terrible mistake!

Bert Troll: Eh?

Dori: You can't reason with them, they're half-wits!

Bofur: Half-wits? What does that make us?

Bilbo Baggins: [as Dwarves start musically banging cutlery on the tables] Careful! You'll blunt them!

Bofur: [Amused] Oh, did you hear that, lads? He says we'll blunt the knives!

Dwarves: [Gleefully Start Singing] Blunt the Knives! Bend the Forks! Smash the Bottles and Burn the Corks! Chip the glassed and crack the Plates! That's what Bilbo Baggins Hates!

Bilbo Baggins: [griping about the dwarves] They pillaged the pantry. I'm not even going to tell you what they've done to the bathroom, they all but destroyed the plumbing. I don't understand; what are they doing in my house?

[first lines]

Old Bilbo: My dear Frodo, you asked me once if I had told you everything there was to know about my adventures. And while I can honestly say I've told you the truth, I may not have told you all of it. I am old, Frodo. I am not the same hobbit as I once was. It is time for you to know what really happened.

Old Bilbo: It began long ago in a land far away to the east, the like of which you will not find in the world today. There was the city of Dale, its markets known far and wide, full of the bounties of vine and vale, peaceful and prosperous. For this city lay before the doors of the greatest kingdom in Middle-Earth: Erebor, stronghold of Thr?r, King under the Mountain and mightiest of the Dwarf-Lords. Thr?r ruled with utter surety, never doubting his house would endure, for his line lay secure in the lives of his son and grandson. Thr?r named it the King's Jewel, he took it as a sign, a sign that his right to rule was divine. All would pay homage to him, even the great Elven King Thranduil. But the years of peace and plenty was not to last. Slowly the days turned sour and the watchful nights closed in. Thr?r's love of gold grown too fierce and sickness had begun to grow within him. It was a sickness of the mind. And where sickness thrives, bad things will follow...

Old Bilbo: The first they heard was a noise like a hurricane coming down from the North.

[Radagast endeavors to cure an ailing hedgehog]

Radagast: I don't understand why it's not working! It's not as if it's witchcraft! [pause]

Radagast: Witchcraft... Oh, but it IS. A dark and terrible magic...

Radagast: [shows Gandalf a Morgul-blade] That thing is not from the world of the living...

Frodo: [finds a manuscript] What's this?

Old Bilbo: That is private, keep your sticky paws off! It's not ready yet!

Frodo: Not ready for what?

Old Bilbo: Reading!

Galadriel: You carry something. It came to you from Radagast. He found it in Dol Guldur.

Gandalf: Yes.

Galadriel: Show it to me. [Gandalf takes out a package]

Elrond: What is that?

Galadriel: A relic... of Mordor.

Elrond: A Morgul-blade!

Galadriel: Made for the Witch-king of Angmar and buried with him. When Angmar fell, the Men of the North took his body and all that he possessed and sealed it within the High Fells of Rhudaur. Deep within the rock, they buried him. In a tomb so dark, it would never come to light.

Elrond: This is not possible. A powerful spell lies upon those tombs, they can NOT be opened.

Saruman: What proof do we have this weapon came from Angmar's grave?

Gandalf: I can find none.

Saruman: Because there IS none!

Galadriel: [while Saruman talks] They are leaving.

Galadriel: [smiles] You knew.

Old Bilbo: In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole full of worms and oozy smells. This was a hobbit-hole and that means good food, a warm hearth, and all the comforts of home.

Kili: [Kili is gently flirting with an Elf maid when he catches Dwalin glaring at him] I can't say I fancy Elves myself, too thin. They're all high cheekbones and creamy skin. Not enough facial hair for me. [He motions to an Elf walking behind him] Although, that one there's not bad.

Dwalin: That's not an Elf Maid. [the Elf turns around, revealing that he is indeed a male]

Kili: [the Dwarves burst out laughing at Kili's "mistake"] That's funny.

Thorin Oakenshield: Out of the frying pan...

Gandalf: ...and into the fire.

[as the dwarves are disarmed, Grinnah partially unsheathes Thorin's sword, and throws it away in horror]

Great Goblin: [recoils] I know that sword! It is the Goblin Cleaver! The Biter! The blade that sliced a thousand necks! Slash them! Beat them! Kill them! Kill them all! Cut off his head!

Thorin Oakenshield: Tell me, Mr. Baggins, have you done much fighting?

Bilbo Baggins: Pardon me?

Thorin Oakenshield: Axe or sword, what's your weapon of choice?

Bilbo Baggins: [proudly] Well I do have some skill at conkers, if you must know.

Gandalf: Of course I was going to tell you, I was waiting for this very chance. And really, I think you could trust that I know what I am doing.

Elrond: Do you? That dragon has slept for 60 years. What will happen if your plan should fail? If you wake that beast...

Gandalf: But if we succeed. If the Dwarves take back the mountain, our defenses in the East will be strengthened!

Elrond: It is a dangerous move, Gandalf.

Gandalf: It is also dangerous to do nothing or cut the throne of Erebor, it's Thorin's birthright. What is it you fear?

Elrond: Have you forgotten? A strain of madness runs deep in that family. His grandfather lost his mind, his father succumbed to the same sickness. Can you swear Thorin Oakenshield will not also fall? Gandalf, these decisions do not rest with us alone. It is not up to you or me to redraw the map of Middle-earth.

Gandalf: Does it not worry you that the last of the Dwarf-rings should simply vanish along with its bearer? Of the Seven Dwarf-rings, four were consumed by dragons, two were taken by Sauron before he fell in Mordor... the fate of the last Dwarf-ring remains unknown, the ring that was borne by Thrain.

Saruman: Without the Ruling Ring of Power, the Seven are no value to the Enemy. To control the other Rings, he needs the One. And that Ring was lost long, long ago. It was swept out to sea by the waters of the Anduin.

Oin: Ive got parasites as big as my arm.

Kili: Mine are the biggest parasites. I've got huge parasites.

Bilbo Baggins: [as four dwarves start rearranging his kitchen, his doorbell rings again] Oh no. No. There's nobody home! Go away, and bother somebody else! There're far to many dwarves in my dining room as it is. If this is some cluthead's idea of a joke, I can only say, it is in VERY poor taste! [He opens the door, and eight dwarves fall in a heap in front of him]

Dori: Excuse me, Mr. Gandalf?

Gandalf: Yes?

Dori: May I tempt you with a cup of chamomile?

Gandalf: Oh, no, thank you, Dori. A little red wine for me, I think.

Dori: Mr. Gandalf? A glass of red wine as requested. It's got a fruity bouquet.

Gandalf: Ah, cheers.

Gandalf: [counting on his fingers] Fili, Kili... Oin, Gloin... Dwalin, Balin... Bifur, Bofur, Bombur... Dori, Nori, Ori...

Bifur: [grunts something in Khazdul and slaps his elbow]

Gandalf: Yes, you're quite right, Bifur. We appear to be one dwarf short.

Frodo: They're all coming. Except for the Sackville-Bagginses, who are demanding you ask them in person.

Old Bilbo: Are they indeed? Over my dead body.

Frodo: They'd probably find that quite agreeable. They're convinced you have tunnels overflowing with gold.

Old Bilbo: It was one small chest - hardly overflowing. And it still reeks of troll!

Bilbo Baggins: [Bilbo interrupts as Tom the troll about to eat Bombur] Uh... no, no, not... not that one, he... he's infected!

William Troll: [taken aback] You what?

Bilbo Baggins: Yes, he's got worms in his... tubes.

Tom Troll: Ooh!

[Tom throws down Bomber in disgust]

Bilbo Baggins: In-in fact, they all have. They're infested with parasites, it's a terrible business, I wouldn't risk it, I really wouldn't.

Oin: Parasites? Did he say parasites?

Kili: Yeah, we don't have parasites!

Kili: You have parasites!

[Thorin realizes that Bilbo is trying to buy them time and kicks Kili and they realize what Bilbo is doing]

Oin: I've got parasites as big as my arm!

Kili: Mine are the biggest parasites, I've got huge parasites!

Nori: We're riddled!

Ori: Yes, I'm riddled!

Dori: Yes, we are, badly!

Gandalf: All good stories deserve embellishment.

Bilbo Baggins: [1st riddle] Thirty white horses, on a red hill; First, they champ. Then they stand; the, they stand still.

[Gollum pauses; thinking]

Gollum: [unsure] Uh... Teeth?

[Bilbo looks defeated]

Gollum: [excitedly] TEETH!

[Gollum laughs; Bilbo smiles half-heartedly]

Gollum: Yes! my precious!

[inhales deeply]

Gollum: [very serious] But we, we... we only have... NINE.

[He bares his nine, crooked, yet sharp teeth; to show emphasis]

Gollum: [searching for "his precious"; the one ring; wails in despair] Lost! My precious is LOOOOSSST!

[Gollum lets out a gasping sob; Bilbo takes the One Ring out of his pocket and hides it behind his back]

Bilbo Baggins: [concerned] What have you lost?

Gollum: [crying] Mustn't ask us! Not its business! Noooo... Gollum! Gollum!

[Gollum sobs softly]

Bilbo Baggins: [swinging his sword at Gollum] *Keep* your distance! *I'LL* use this... if I have to!

[Gollum discovers that Bilbo has the One Ring in his possession]

Gollum: [horrified whisper] He stole it.

[Bilbo stands there; holding Sting out in front of him]

Gollum: [anger rising] He Stole it!

[Gollum's face contorts with rage; then he lets out a scream of extreme fury]

Gollum: [shouts] AAAAARRRRAAAAHHHHH! He *STOLE* it!

[as he says this, Gollum throws a stone at Bilbo, who blocks it with his sword. The rock hits and bounces off the sword with a "clang". Bilbo immediately bolts for his life. Gollum screams in fury as he chases after him]

Bilbo Baggins: [feeling the One Ring in his pocket; to himself] What... have I got... in my pocket?

[Gollum; who is crouching on a stalagmite, holding a rock he is meaning to throw at Bilbo, scowls, thinking Bilbo's question as a riddle]

Gollum: That's not fair... That's not fair! It's against the *rules*!

[In a hissy fit, Gollum throws the rock down. Bilbo looks on in amazement]

Gollum: [pouting] Ask us another one!

Bilbo Baggins: [points his sword at Gollum] No, no. You said, "ask me a question." Well, *That* is MY question. "What Have I Got In My Pocket?"

[Gollum growls in reluctance as he jumps down from his stalagmite perch and crouches on the floor beside his hideout]

Gollum: [holding up only two fingers] It must give us three guesses, precious! It must give us *Three*!

Bilbo Baggins: Three guesses, very well. Guess away!

Gollum: [holds up his hands] Handses!

Bilbo Baggins: [shows Gollum that his left hand is out of the pocket] Wrong. Try again.

[Gollum groans in frustration]

Gollum: [rummaging through his belongings in his hole; to himself] I've got Fishses bones, Goblinses bones, Bat's wings, food...

[He growls; thinking hard; he slaps his hands down repeatedly when... ]

Gollum: [shouts] *KNIFE*! Oh, Shut up!

Bilbo Baggins: Wrong again. Last guess.

Gollum: String... or Nothing!

Bilbo Baggins: Two guesses at once. Wrong both times.

Gollum: [groans; defeated] Ooooooohhh...

Gollum: [as he groans; Gollum flops on his side. He lies in a fetal position as he sobs softly]

Gollum: [to Bilbo;sweetly] Ask us.

[a moment's pause]

Gollum: [harshly] ASK US!

Gollum: [to Bilbo; after answering the first riddle] Our turn...

[reciting riddle; as he recites, Gollum menacingly creeps around a rock, not taking his eyes off of Bilbo, who slowly and cautiously steps away from him]

Gollum: Voiceless it cries; Wingless flutters; Toothless bites; Mouthless mutters.

[he glares at Bilbo deviously]

Bilbo Baggins: Just a minute...

[Bilbo walks away to think]

Gollum: [his pupils widen; as Friendly Gollum] Ooo, Ooo! We knows! We knows!

[as treacherous Gollum]

Gollum: Shut up!

Bilbo Baggins: [Bilbo sees ripples in the lake, made by the wind; he smiles] Wind...

Bilbo Baggins: [turning to Gollum] It's wind, 'course it is.

[Gollum growls]

Gollum: [prowling towards Bilbo] Very clever, hobbitses... VERY CLEVER...

Bilbo Baggins: [holds out his sword towards Gollum, stopping him; reciting] A... A box without hinges, key, or-or lid... and yet, golden treasure inside is... hid.

Gollum: [Gollum creeps away to think; as he is thinking, he begins to mutter and whisper to himself] Box... um uh... Box... lid... and a key...

Bilbo Baggins: Well?

Gollum: [annoyed; pointing at Bilbo] It's nah-stee.

[He continues to whisper to himself]

Bilbo Baggins: Give up?

Gollum: [strained] Oh, give us a chance, precious! Give us a CHANCE!

[Gollum continues to groan, growl, grunt and hiss in frusteration. As he thinks, he makes faces; making "oo" sounds and blowing raspberry sounds with his lips stretched when suddenly, his eyes open wide and his mouth is agape]

Gollum: *EGGSES!*

[Gollum chuckles as Bilbo shakes his head, dismayed]

Gollum: Eggses! Wet, crunchy little eggses! Grandmother taught us how to suck them, yes! heh, heh...

[Gandalf and the dwarves have survived the fall in the underground Goblin Town]

Bofur: Well, *THAT* could've been worse.

[a second later, the corpse of the Great Goblin lands heavily on the dwarves, who groan in pain and chagrin under the goblin's wieght]

Dwalin: [through his teeth] You've *GOT* to be *JOKING*!

[Bilbo is trying to escape Gollum and gets stuck in a crevice. Gollum sees him. With an angry screech, Gollum prowls towards him]

Gollum: [ferociously] It's ours... It's...

Gollum: OURS!

[as Gollum shrieks, Bilbo unsticks himself; his brass buttons from his vest pop and fly. Gollum looks on startled as one of the buttons bounces off his nose]

Gollum: [having discovered Bilbo; maliciously gleeful] Bless us and splash us, precious! THAT'S a meaty mouthful. ah...

[Gollum creeps forward; Bilbo lifts up his sword so that it's tip touches Gollum's throat. Gollum gawks at the blade, taken aback]

Gollum: Ah... Gollum, Gollum! Ack!

[He glares at Bilbo fearfully and slowly backs away]

Great Goblin: [about his "Goblin Town" song] Catchy, isn't it? It's one of my own, personal compositions.

Balin: [appalled] That's not a song...

Balin: It's an ABOMINATION!

[the other dwarves shout and jeer in angry agreement]

Great Goblin: Abominations, disfigurations, mutilations, and repulsions... That's all you're going to find down here.

Frodo: [finds a sketch of a younger Bilbo] What's this?

Old Bilbo: That is private. Keep your sticky paws off. [Frodo start to look at the book, Bilbo hides the text] It's not ready yet.

Old Bilbo: Reading. [notices a bundle of envelopes] What on earth are these?

Frodo: Replies to the party invitations.

Old Bilbo: [excited] Good gracious. Is it today?

Frodo: They all said they are coming. Except for the Sackville-Bagginses, who demand that you ask them in person.

Old Bilbo: Really... Over my dead body.

Frodo: They'd probably find that quite agreeable. They seem to think you have tunnels overflowing with gold.

Old Bilbo: It was one small chest; hardly overflowing. [whispers] And it still smells of troll! [Hides some gold cups]

Frodo: [notices Bilbo's behavior] What on earth are you doing?

Old Bilbo: Taking precautions! You know, I caught her making off with the silverware once.

Frodo: Who?

Old Bilbo: Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. She had all my spoons stuffed in her pockets! Ha! Dreadful woman! Make sure you keep an eye of her after I, um, I... When I'm...

Frodo: When you're what?

Old Bilbo: [not wanting to tell] It's nothing, nothing...

Frodo: You know, some people are beginning to wonder about you, uncle. They think you are becoming...odd.

Old Bilbo: "Odd"?

Frodo: Hmm, unsociable.

Old Bilbo: "Unsociable"? Me? Nonsense! [Hands Frodo a sign] Be a good lad and put that out at the gate.

[The sign reads "No admittance; Except on party business."]

Bilbo: Good morning.

Gandalf: What do you mean? Do you mean to wish me a good morning, or do you mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not? Or perhaps you mean to say that you feel good this particular morning? Or are you simply stating that it is a morning to be good on?

Bilbo: ...All of them at once, I suppose. [long pause] Can I help you?

Gandalf: That remains to be seen. I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure.

Bilbo: [Bilbo stares at Gandalf] An adventure?... Well, I don't imagine anyone west of Bree would have much interest in adventures. Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things. Make you late for dinner! [When Gandalf still doesn't leave, Bilbo awkwardly goes to his mail, pretending to pay no attention to him. Finally, he clears his throat.] Good morning! [Heads for his front door]

Gandalf: To think that I should have lived to be "good morninged" by Belladonna Took's son as if I were selling buttons at the door!

Bilbo: [stops] Beg your pardon?

Gandalf: You've changed. And not entirely for the better, Bilbo Baggins.

Bilbo: I'm sorry, do I know you?

Gandalf: Well, you know my name although you don't remember I belong to it; I am Gandalf! And Gandalf means... me.

Bilbo: Not Gandalf, the wandering wizard who made such excellent fireworks. Old Took use to have them on Mid-summer's Eve. [chuckles] No idea you were still in business.

Gandalf: And where else should I be? [Bilbo continues to smoke his pipe] All the same, I'm pleased to find you remember something about me, even if it's only my fireworks. Well, that's decided. It will be very good for you... and most amusing for me. I shall inform the others.

Bilbo: [startled] Inform who? Wait, wha- no! No. No, wait. We do not want any adventures here, thank you- not today! Not-- I suggest you try over the Hill or across the Water. Good morning! [hurries inside and shuts the door]

[The doorbell rings; Bilbo goes to answer it and finds a dwarf.]

Dwalin: [Bows] Dwalin, at your service.

Bilbo: Uh, Bilbo...Baggins. At yours. [Dwalin walks in] Do we know each other?

Dwalin: No. Which way, laddie? Is it down here?

Bilbo: Is what down where?

Dwalin: Supper. He said there'd be food and lots of it.

Bilbo: He said? Who said?

[Dwalin proceeds to the kitchen and eats Bilbo's dinner]

Dwalin: Very good, this. Any more?

Bilbo: What? Oh, uh, yes, yes. [finds a jar of seed-cakes] Help yourself. [pauses as Dwalin eats away] It's just that, um, I wasn't expecting company.

[The doorbell rings]

Dwalin: That'll be the door.

[Bilbo opens the door, the dwarf smiles and bows]

Balin: Balin, At your service.

Bilbo: [blankly] Good evening.

Balin: Yes, it is. Though I think it might rain later. Am I late?

Bilbo: Late for what?

Balin: [catches Dwalin trying to get more scones out of another jar]OH! Evening, brother!

Dwalin: [sets down the jar and smiles] Ho ho, by my beard! You are shorter and wider than last we met.

Balin: Wider, not shorter. Sharp enough for both of us.

[Dwalin and Balin laugh and butt heads. They proceed to raid Bilbo's pantry while talking with each other]

Bilbo: Excuse me? Sorry, I hate to interrupt, but the thing is I'm not entirely sure you're in the right house. It's not that I don't like visitors. I-I like visitors as much as the next hobbit, but I do like to know them before they come visiting. The thing is...uh...the thing is, I don't know either of you, not in the slightest. I don't mean to be blunt, but I had to speak my mind. I'm sorry.

Balin: [suddenly noticing that Bilbo was talking] Apology accepted. [smiles, to Bilbo's growing confusion]

Fíli: Fíli.

Kíli: And Kíli.

Fíli and Kíli: [bowing] At your service.

Kíli: You must be Mr. Boggins!

Bilbo: Nope! You can't come in; you've come to the wrong house.

[Bilbo tries to shut the door, but Kíli pushes it open]

Kíli: [deflated] What? Has it been cancelled?

Fíli: No one told us.

Bilbo: Ca-? No, nothing's been cancelled.

Kíli: [smiles] That's a relief!

[They walk in as if they had been expected.]

Fíli: Careful with these. I just had 'em sharpened. [tosses Bilbo their blades]

Kíli: It's nice, this place. You do it yourself?

Bilbo: Well, no, it's been in the family for years- [Sees Kíli rubbing his shoes on the furniture] That's my mother's glory box! Could you please not do that?

Dwalin: Fíli, Kíli, come on. Give us a hand.

Kíli: [smiling at the sight of Dwalin] Mr. Dwalin.

[Dwalin leads Fíli and Kíli into the dining room.]

Balin: [about the table] Let's shove this in the hallway. Otherwise, we'll never get everyone in.

Bilbo: [surprised] He-- "Everyone"? How many more are there? [doorbell rings again, Bilbo is getting rather cross as he heads for the door.] Oh no. No, no. [louder, tossing the knives to the floor] There's nobody home! Go away and bother somebody else! There's far too many dwarves in my dining room as it is! I-i-if this is some... clot-head's idea of a joke... [chuckles sarcastically] ...I can only say. It is in very poor taste! [opens the door and eight dwarves (Dori, Nori, Ori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur) fall down on top of each other. Gandalf stands behind looking at Bilbo.] [with an irritated look on his face] Gandalf.

[Bilbo sees Bombur walk from the pantry holding several cheese wheels]

Bilbo: A tad excessive, isn't it? Have you got a cheese knife?

Bofur: "Cheese knife?" He eats it by the block.

Bilbo: [grabbing a doily from Nori] Excuse me, that is a doily, not a dishcloth.

Bofur: But it's full of holes!

Bilbo: It's supposed to look like that, it's crochet.

Bofur: Oh, and a wonderful game it is too, if you've got the balls for it. [laughs]

Bilbo: [annoyed] Bebother and confusticate these dwarves!

Gandalf: My dear Bilbo, what on earth is the matter?

Bilbo: What's the matter? I am surrounded by dwarves! What are they doing here?

Gandalf: Oh, they're quite a merry gathering, once you get used to them.

Bilbo: I don't want to get used to them! The state of my kitchen! There's mud trod into the carpet! They pillaged the pantry. I'm not even gonna tell you what they've done in the bathroom. They've all but destroyed the plumbing! I don't understand what they're doing in my house! [Ori walks up]

Ori: 'Scuse me. I'm sorry to interrupt, but what should I do with my plate?

Fíli: Here you go, Ori, give it to me. [Fíli takes the plate and tosses it to Kíli, who throws it across the hall; Bifur catches it, while not looking]

Bilbo: [mortified] Excuse me! That's my mother's West Farthing pottery, it's over 100 years old! [to the other dwarves clashing the cutlery together] And can you not do that? You'll blunt them!

Bofur: Oh, did you hear that, lads? He says we'll blunt the knives!

Kíli: [singing] Blunt the knives, bend the forks!

Fíli: [singing] Smash the bottles and burn the corks!

Dwarves: [singing] Chip the glasses and crack the plates... That's what Bilbo Baggins hates! Cut the cloth, tread on the fat! Leave the bones on the bedroom mat! Pour the milk on the pantry floor! Splash the wine on every door! Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl! Pound them up with a thumping pole! And when you're finished, if they are whole... Send them down the hall to roll! That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!

Bilbo: "Funeral arrangements"? [reads contract] Oh...

Thorin: [whispering to Gandalf] I cannot guarantee his safety.

Thorin: Nor will I be responsible for his fate.

Gandalf: [hesitates] Agreed.

Bilbo: Uh, "Terms: cash on delivery, up to but not exceeding one fourteenth total profit, if any." Seems fair... Uh, "Present Company shall not be liable for injuries inflicted by, or sustained as a consequence thereof, including, but not limited to...la-ce-ra-tions..." "Evisceration"?... "Incineration"?

[Bilbo starts to look shaky]

Bilbo: Huh? Yeah, I'm okay. [trying to take it in] Feeling a bit faint.

Bofur: [not noticing] Think "furnace with wings."

Bilbo: Yeah, I... I... I need air.

Bofur: Flash of light, searing pain, then poof! You're nothing more than a pile of ash.

Bilbo: ...Nope. [faints]

Gandalf: [sarcastic] Oh, very helpful, Bofur.

Bilbo: I'll be alright. Just let me sit quietly for a moment.

Gandalf: You've been sitting quietly for far too long! Tell me, when did doilies and your mother's dishes become so important to you? I remember a young hobbit who was always running off in search of Elves in the woods. He'd stay out late, come home after dark, trailing mud and twigs and fireflies. A young hobbit who would've liked nothing better than to find out what was beyond the borders of the Shire. The world is not in your books and maps. It's out there.

Bilbo: I can't just go running off into the blue! I am a Baggins...[whimpers]...of Bag End!

Gandalf: You are also a Took. Did you know that your great-great-great-great Uncle Bullroarer Took was so large he could ride a real horse?

Bilbo: Yes.

Gandalf: Well, he could! At the Battle of Greenfields, he charged the Goblin ranks. He swung his club so hard, it knocked the Goblin King's head clean off and it sailed a hundred yards through the air and went down a rabbit hole. And thus the battle was won, and the game of golf invented at the same time.

Bilbo: I do believe you made that up.

Bilbo: Can you promise that I will come back?

Bilbo: That's what I thought. Sorry, Gandalf. I can't sign this. You've got the wrong hobbit.

Master Worrywort: You! Mr. Bilbo, where're you off to?

Bilbo: Can't stop! I'm already late.

Master Worrywort: Late for what?

Bilbo: [excited] I'm going on an adventure!

Gandalf: I think it would be wiser to move on. We could make for the Hidden Valley.

Thorin: I told you already. I will not go near that place.

Gandalf: Why not? The Elves could help us. We could get food, rest, advice.

Thorin: I do not need their advice.

Gandalf: We have a map that we cannot read. Lord Elrond could help us.

Thorin: "Help"? A dragon attacks Erebor. What "help" came from the Elves? Orcs plunder Moria, desecrate our sacred halls, the Elves looked on and did nothing! And you ask me to seek out the very people who betrayed my grandfather who betrayed my father.

Gandalf: You are neither of them. I did not give you that map and key for you to hold on to the past.

Thorin: I did not know they were yours to keep. [frustrated, Gandalf walks off]

Bilbo: Everything all right? Gandalf, where are you going?

Gandalf: To seek the company of the only one around here who's got any sense!

Bilbo: Who's that?

Gandalf: MYSELF, Mr. Baggins! I've had enough of dwarves for one day!

Thorin: Come on, Bombur, we're hungry.

Bilbo: [to Balin] Is he coming back?

[While looking through a troll hoard, Gandalf and Thorin come across two swords of exceptionally fine craftsmanship.]

Thorin: These swords were not made by any troll.

Gandalf: Nor were they made by any smith among men. These were forged in Gondolin by the High Elves of the First Age.[Thorin sets aside the weapon.] You could not wish for a finer blade.

[in the troll hoard, Gandalf steps on a small Elf-made sword; he goes out of the cave and walks up to Bilbo]

Gandalf: Bilbo.

Bilbo: Hmm?

Gandalf: Here. [gives Bilbo the sword] This is about your size.

Bilbo: I can't take this.

Gandalf: The blade is of Elvish-make, which means it will glow blue when orcs or goblins are nearby.

Bilbo: I have... I have never used a sword in my life.

Gandalf: And I hope you never have to. But if you do, remember this: true courage lies in knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.

[While talking with Radagast, the company finds themselves beset by wargs]

Radagast: I'll draw them off!

Gandalf: These are Gundabad Wargs! They will outrun you.

Radgast: [confident] These are Rhosgobel rabbits! I'd like to see them try.

Elrond: Welcome, Thorin, son of Thrain.

Thorin: I do not believe we have met.

Elrond: You have your grandfather's bearing. I knew Thrór when he ruled under the mountain.

Thorin: Indeed? He made no mention of you.

Elrond: [responds in Elvish]

Gloin: What is he saying? Does he offer us insults?!

Gandalf: No, Master Gloin, he's offering you food. [pause]

Gloin: Well, in that case, lead on.

Elrond: Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole.

Bilbo: Durin's Day?

Gandalf: It is the start of the Dwarves' new year when the last Moon of Autumn and the first Sun of Winter appear in the sky together.

Thorin: This is ill news. Summer is passing, Durin's Day will soon be upon us.

Balin: We still have time.

Bilbo: Time for what?

Balin: To find the entrance. We have to be standing in exactly the right spot, at exactly the right time. Then... and only then can the door be opened.

Elrond: So this is your purpose? To enter the mountain?

Thorin: What of it?

Gandalf: Who do you mean?

Elrond: You are not the only guardian to stand watch over Middle-earth.

[Dialogue for this scene in Black Speech. At Weathertop, a band of Orcs arrive to report to their leader]

Yazneg: The Dwarves, Master, we lost them. Ambushed by Elven filth, we were-

Azog: [furious] I don't want excuses! I want the head of the Dwarf King!

Yazneg: We were outnumbered, there was nothing we could do. I barely escaped with my life!

Azog: [seizes Yazneg by the throat] Far better you had paid with it! [Azog throws Yazneg aside to be torn apart by Wargs]

Galadriel: You will follow them.

Galadriel: You are right to help Thorin Oakenshield, but I fear this quest has set in motion forces we do not yet understand. The riddle of the Morgul-blade must be answered. Something moves in the shadows, unseen, hidden from our sight. It will not show itself, not yet...but every day it grows in strength. You must be careful. [Gandalf nods and turns to leave] Mithrandir, why the halfling?

Gandalf: I don't know. Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I've found it is the small things; everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay... simple acts of kindness, and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid... and he gives me courage.

Galadriel: [takes his hands] Do not be afraid, Mithrandir. You are not alone. [in Elvish] If you ever need my help, I will come.

Great Goblin: Who would be so bold as to come armed into my kingdom? Spies? Thieves? Assassins?!

Grinnah: Dwarves, your Malevolence.

Great Goblin: Dwarves?

Grinnah: We found them on the front porch.

Great Goblin: Well, don't just stand there, search them! Every crack, every crevice!

[the Goblins search the dwarves, including squashing Oin's ear trumpet]

[the goblins empty a sack of objects from Rivendell, stolen by Nori]

Grinnah: It is my belief, your great protuberance, that they are in league with Elves!

Great Goblin: [looks at the bottom of a golden candelabra] "Made in Rivendell". Bah! Second Age, couldn't give it away. [tosses it aside]

[Dori looks at Nori, who has a guilty expression on his face]

Nori: Just a couple of keepsakes.

Bilbo Baggins: That, my dear Frodo, is where I come in, for quite by chance and the will of a Wizard, fate decided I would become part of this tale. It began...well, it began as you might expect. In a hole in a ground, there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole full of worms and oozy smells. This was a hobbit-hole and that means good food, a warm hearth, and all the comforts of home.

Bilbo Baggins: I'm going on an adventure!

Gandalf The Grey: THE DAWN WILL TAKE YOU ALL!

Gandalf The Grey: Erebor, the Lonely Mountain. The last of the great Dwarf kingdoms of Middle-earth.

Gandalf The Grey: Enough! If I say Bilbo Baggins is a burglar, then a burglar he is!

Thorin Oakenshield: If we have read these signs, do you not think others will have read them too? Rumors have begun to spread. The dragon Smaug has not been seen for 60 years... Eyes look east to the mountain assessing, wondering, weighing the risk... Perhaps the vast wealth of our people now lies unprotected. Do we sit back while others claim what is rightfully ours? Or do we seize this chance to take back Erebor?!

Thorin Oakenshield: Loyalty, honor, a willing heart, I can ask no more than that.

Thorin Oakenshield: I would take each and every one of these dwarves over an army from the Iron Hills.

Thorin Oakenshield: [about the Key to the Hidden Door] From my grandfather to my father, this has come to me. They dreamt of the day the Dwarves of Erebor would reclaim their homeland. There is no choice, Balin. Not for me.

Gollum / SméAgol: What has it got in its nasty little pocketses?

Gollum / SméAgol: Baggins! Thief! Curse it and crush it! We hates it FOREVER!!!

Gollum / SméAgol: Gollum! Gollum!

Thorin: Warg-Scouts! Which means an Orc pack is not far behind!

Bilbo Baggins: Orc pack?

Gandalf: Who did you tell about your quest, beyond your kin?

Thorin: No one.

Gandalf: Who did you tell?!

Thorin: No one, I swear. What in Durin's name is going on?

Gandalf: You are being hunted.

Dwalin: We have to get out of here.

Ori: We can't! We have no ponies; they bolted.

Bilbo Baggins

  • My dear Frodo, you asked me once if I had told you everything there was to know about my adventures. And while I can honestly say I have told you the truth, I may not have told you all of it. I am old now, Frodo. I'm not the same hobbit as I once was. I think it is time for you to know what really happened. It began long ago in a land far away to the east, the like of which you will not find in the world today. There was the city of Dale, its markets known far and wide, full of the bounties of vine and vale, peaceful and prosperous. For this city lay before the doors of the greatest kingdom in Middle-earth; Erebor, stronghold of Thrór, King under the Mountain and mightiest of the Dwarf-lords. Thrór ruled with utter surety, never doubting his house would endure, for his line lay secure in the lives of his son and grandson. Ah, Frodo, Erebor! Built deep within the mountain itself, the beauty of this fortress city was legend. Its wealth lay in the earth, in precious gems hewn from rock and in great seams of gold running like rivers through stone. The skill of the Dwarves was unequaled, fashioning objects of great beauty out of diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire. Ever they delved deep, down into the dark and that is where they found it, the Heart of the Mountain! The Arkenstone. Thrór named it the King's Jewel. He took it as a sign, a sign that his right to rule was divine. All would pay homage to him, even the great Elven King, Thranduil. But the years of peace and plenty were not to last. Slowly, the days turned sour and the watchful nights closed in. Thrór's love of gold had grown too fierce. A sickness had begun to grow within him. It was a sickness of the mind. And where sickness thrives, bad things will follow. The first they heard was a noise like a hurricane coming down from the North; the pines on the mountain creaked and cracked in the hot, dry wind. Thranduil would not risk the lives of his kin against the wrath of the dragon. No help came from the Elves that day...or any day since. Robbed of their homeland, the Dwarves of Erebor wandered the wilderness. A once mighty people brought low. The young Dwarf prince took work where he could find it, laboring in the villages of Men. But always he remembered the mountain smoke beneath the moon, the trees like torches blazing bright, for he had seen dragon-fire in the sky and a city turned to ash. And he never forgave...and he never forgot.
  • That, my dear Frodo, is where I come in, for quite by chance and the will of a Wizard, fate decided I would become part of this tale. It began...well, it began as you might expect. In a hole in a ground, there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole full of worms and oozy smells. This was a hobbit-hole and that means good food, a warm hearth, and all the comforts of home.
  • I'm going on an adventure!
  • [to the trolls, about cooking the dwarves] Well, have you smelled them? You're going to need something a lot stronger than sage before you plate this lot up.

Gandalf the Grey

  • You will have to do without pocket handkerchiefs, and a great many other things, before we reach our journey's end, Bilbo Baggins. You were born to the rolling hills and little rivers of the Shire, but home is now behind you; the world is ahead.
  • [to the three Trolls] THE DAWN WILL TAKE YOU ALL!
  • Erebor, the Lonely Mountain. The last of the great Dwarf kingdoms of Middle-earth.
  • Enough! If I say Bilbo Baggins is a burglar, then a burglar he is!
  • What do you mean? Do you mean to wish me a good morning, or do you mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not? Or perhaps you mean to say that you feel good this particular morning? Or are you simply stating that it is a morning to be good on?
  • True courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.
  • Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I've found it is the small things; everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid... and he gives me courage.
  • [ to Bilbo ] Don't mind him, laddie. Thorin has more cause than most to hate Orcs. After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain, King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria...but our enemy had got there first. We were leaderless; defeat and death were upon us. That is when I saw him; the young dwarf prince facing down the Pale Orc. He stood alone against this terrible foe, his armour rent, wielding nothing but an oaken branch as a shield...Azog the Defiler learned that day that the line of Durin would not be so easily broken. Our forces rallied and drove the Orcs back; our enemy had been defeated...but there was no feast nor song that night, for our dead were beyond the count of grief. We few had survived and I thought to myself then 'There is one I could follow. There is one I could call King'.

Thorin Oakenshield

  • If we have read these signs, do you not think others will have read them too? Rumors have begun to spread. The dragon Smaug has not been seen for 60 years...Eyes look east to the mountain assessing, wondering, weighing the risk...Perhaps the vast wealth of our people now lies unprotected. Do we sit back while others claim what is rightfully ours? Or do we seize this chance to take back Erebor?!
  • Loyalty, honor, a willing heart, I can ask no more than that.
  • I would take each and every one of these dwarves over an army from the Iron Hills.
  • [about the Key to the Hidden Door] From my grandfather to my father, this has come to me. They dreamt of the day the Dwarves of Erebor would reclaim their homeland. There is no choice, Balin. Not for me.

Radagast The Brown

  • [Radagast fails to cure a sick hedgehog, despite trying numerous cures] I don't understand why it's not working! It's not as if it's witchcraft! [pauses] Witchcraft . Oh, but it is. A dark and powerful magic...
  • [showing Gandalf a Morgul blade he recovered from Dol Guldur] That is not from the world of the living.

J. R. R. Tolkien Quotes About Journey

Standart top banner.

Pippin: I didn't think it would end this way. Gandalf: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path... One that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass... And then you see it. Pippin: What? Gandalf?... See what? Gandalf: White shores... and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise. Pippin: Well, that isn't so bad. Gandalf: No... No it isn't.

the hobbit journey quotes

All that is gold does not glitter.

Though here at journey's end I lie In darkness buried deep, Beyond all towers strong and high, Beyond all mountains steep, Above all shadows rides the Sun And Stars for ever dwell: I will not say the Day is done, Nor bid the Stars farewell.

End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path... One that we all must take.

End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.

Farewell we call to hearth and hall! Though wind may blow and rain may fall. We must away ere the break of day. Far over wood and mountain tall.

Journey’s end In western lands beneath the Sun The flowers may rise in Spring, The trees may bud, the waters run, The merry finches sing. Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night, And swaying branches bear The Elven-stars as jewels white Amid their branching hair. Though here at journey's end I lie In darkness buried deep, Beyond all towers strong and high, Beyond all mountains steep, Above all shadows rides the Sun And Stars for ever dwell: I will not say the Day is done, Nor bid the Stars farewell.J.

Fool of a Took!" he growled. "This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party. Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance.

Fare well we call to hearth and hall Though wind may blow and rain may fall We must away ere break of day Over the wood and mountain tall To Rivendell where Elves yet dwell In glades beneath the misty fell Through moor and waste we ride in haste And wither then we cannot tell With foes ahead behind us dread Beneath the sky shall be our bed Until at last our toil be sped Our journey done, our errand sped We must away! We must away! We ride before the break of day!

Farewell," they cried, "Wherever you fare till your eyries receive you at the journey's end!" That is the polite thing to say among eagles. "May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks," answered Gandalf, who knew the correct reply.

Farewell! wherever you fare, till your eyries receive you at the journey’s end!

The Star Wars sequel trilogy brought a fresh wave of memorable moments, characters, and, of course, iconic quotes. While opinions on the trilogy are mixed, there's no denying the impact of certain lines that resonate deeply with fans. These quotes encapsulate the themes, emotions, and epic scale of the Star Wars universe. From Rey's journey of self-discovery to Kylo Ren's internal conflict, the dialogue in these films is the reason Star Wars fans keep coming back for more. These quotes make the characters who they are: the good, the bad, and the evil.

Each quote from the sequel trilogy carries its weight, contributing to the overarching narrative and leaving a lasting impression. Whether it's a profound declaration of hope, a chilling statement of power, or a heartfelt exchange between characters, these quotes have become some of the most memorable in the Star Wars saga.

10 “I Am All the Sith.”

Emperor palpatine, star wars episode ix: the rise of skywalker, how old was anakin skywalker when he became darth vader.

The Star Wars prequels charted Anakin Skywalker's journey from Jedi Knight to Sith Lord, revealing he became Darth Vader at a surprisingly young age.

"You are nothing! A scavenger girl is no match for the power in me! I am all the Sith!"

Emperor Palpatine is crazy, most fans would agree. Mad with power, he's one of the more formidable opponents throughout the franchise. This quote, spoken by the Emperor himself during the climactic battle in The Rise of Skywalker , is the perfect example of his influence over the galaxy. It, at the very least, highlights this Sith's sinister legacy, and it's a chilling moment that underscores the final confrontation between good and evil in this trilogy. Emperor Palpatine believes that he is the embodiment of all the Sith Lords before him, challenging anyone to try and best him.

Emperor Palpatine is the ultimate threat , and Rey now knows this. It makes her victory against him all the more meaningful. It's a powerful reminder of the Dark Side's enduring presence in the galaxy, but also a reminder that no matter how dark it gets, there will always be light to defeat it.

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker

In the riveting conclusion of the landmark Skywalker saga, new legends will be born-and the final battle for freedom is yet to come.

9 “The Belonging You Seek Is Not Behind You, It Is Ahead.”

Maz katana, star wars episode vii: the force awakens.

"The belonging you seek is not behind you... it is ahead. I am no Jedi, but I know the Force. It moves through and surrounds every living thing. Close your eyes... Feel it... The light... it's always been there. It will guide you. The saber. Take it."

No one wants to find her place in the universe more than Rey. In a moment of wisdom that resonates from Maz Katana and into Rey, Rey finally accepts her destiny . Destiny is a common theme in all Star Wars movies, but this is especially true in The Force Awakens. If Rey doesn't accept her destiny, the universe will fall into chaos. She must embrace her future, rather than cling to her past, which is not only a recurring theme for Rey, but for Kylo as well.

Maz Katana has the habit of mentoring young Jedi , and Rey is no different. This is the official turning point for Rey in the trilogy, guiding her toward her role as a Jedi. She now has become the hero of her own story. This is a great piece of advice for anyone, too. Even though it applies to Rey and her relationship with the Force, it's a good quote for fans. It can remind the audience that sometimes it's okay to let go of the past, even if it's scary.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Not available

As a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.

8 "Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to."

Kylo ren, star wars episode viii: the last jedi, star wars: did kylo ren's death in rise of skywalker redeem him.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker redeemed Kylo Ren by killing him, but this doesn't mean he deserved to be saved in the first place.

"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. It's the only way to become who you were meant to be."

Much like Rey, Kylo is also trying to let go of his past, though he does it in a much more forceful way. Kylo would love, more than anything, to break free from the legacy of his family, but he's tethered to it just as much as Rey is. Kylo wants to forge his own path, even if it means abandoning everything he once held dear. The theme of rebellion and the struggle between legacy and self-identity are the two biggest themes in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and Kylo shows what happens when you fail to forge your destiny and collapse under the weight of your past.

Kylo, much like Anakin in earlier films, struggles with the Light and Dark Sides. Sometimes, rash action is the only way to move on and grow, but without guidance, these kinds of changes can be hard. Kylo battles with the overarching conflict of the sequel trilogy: the tug of war between old and new.

Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

The Star Wars saga continues as new heroes and galactic legends go on an epic adventure, unlocking mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

7 “We Are the Spark That’ll Light the Fire That’ll Burn the First Order Down.”

Poe dameron, star wars episode viii: the last jedi.

"No, no. We are the spark that'll light the fire that'll burn the First Order down."

The Resistance and Rebels have always been a core part of Star Wars , as they are the only thing standing between the Siths and the galaxy that they wish to control. Without hope and determination, the Resistance wouldn't stand a chance against tyranny. Poe Dameron proves that even the smallest acts of defiance can ignite widespread change. It's an inspiring reminder that hope can persist even in the darkest times.

Overwhelming odds mean nothing to the Resistance. As important as this theme is to the movies, it is also a nice quote for fans. It is incredibly inspiring to see someone on screen face odds that seem insurmountable, only to emerge victorious. This kind of hope is refreshing in a theater and can help fans feel good after watching something so triumphant.

6 “I’ll Always Be With You. Just Like Your Father.”

Luke skywalker, star wars episode viii: the last jedi.

"No. Strike me down in anger and I'll always be with you. Just like your father."

It's hard to watch someone eat the bitter truth, but there are many times in life when it just needs to happen, whether in real life or on screen. Kylo Ren faces a lot of bitter truths throughout the sequel trilogy, and Luke Skywalker, just like his mentor, Yoda, isn't afraid to say things how they are. It's not like Luke hasn't gone up against formidable enemies before . In The Rise of Skywalker , even though Luke is facing his death, he still uses the moment to try and teach a lesson.

Running from your past is something Kylo deals with throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and he struggles with choosing the right path forward. Luke Skywalker tells it to him straight: if Kylo approaches every situation with anger, he will be haunted by his past. The regret will swallow him alive (and arguably it already has). Luke tries one last time to get Kylo to see the light. While this line directly applies to Kylo, it's also a great line for fans to apply outside the film. Star Wars has always been deeply influenced by philosophy, and letting go of anger is a common practice many strive for. That's the reason the Jedi are seen as so disciplined and good. Letting go of regret and anger is hard, but ultimately worth it, as Star Wars teaches.

5 “It’s Time for the Jedi to End.”

"I will never train another generation of Jedi. I came to this island to die. It's time for the Jedi to end."

To hear a Jedi as legendary as Luke Skywalker admit that he wants to just lay down and die instead of fighting the Sith came as a shock to many fans. Everyone expected Luke Skywalker to still be a hero, but when Rey finds him again, hoping to learn from him, his disillusionment with the Jedi Order is not the answer she was looking for. He thinks that the Jedi Order's time has passed and that he no longer has a duty to save the galaxy. If anything, the Jedi Order enabled Emperor Palpatine's return . This line alone marks a major shift in the Star Wars narrative.

It challenged the audience's perception of the Jedi as the ultimate force for good. If someone like Luke Skywalker had lost faith in them, then were they really that good to begin with? This particular plot point also diverts the narrative of The Last Jedi away from a traditional hero's journey. Luke Skywalker was supposed to be Rey's Yoda, but he proved that he was not interested in helping Rey achieve the same things he did. This is one of the best quotes (and pieces of character development) in the whole trilogy, highlighting Luke's internal struggle and the weight of his past failures. Jedi, just like everyone else, are people who make mistakes, and Luke has buckled under the weight of those mistakes.

4 “The Greatest Teacher, Failure Is.”

Yoda, star wars episode viii: the last jedi.

"Pass on what you have learned. Strength, mastery, hmm… but weakness, folly, failure also. Yes: failure, most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is. Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters."

Yoda counters Luke's disillusionment with an important life lesson. Simple, yet profound, Yoda's words always go straight to the point. He knows that Luke is afraid of his failure, and he makes sure Luke knows that without failure there can be no growth. He has to learn from his mistakes so that he can better teach Rey. This isn't just a theme that applies to Luke, but also to other characters like Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren as they, too, grapple with failure.

With this one line, Yoda changes Luke's perspective, helping him realize that his failures don't define him but instead teach him and others valuable lessons. It's a key moment of reflection and growth for Luke, one that propels the story forward. Where would Luke be without Yoda?

3 “The Force Will Be With You. Always.”

Luke skywalker, star wars episode vix: the rise of skywalker.

This quote, delivered by multiple characters throughout the Star Wars saga, is said again in The Rise of Skywalker. Luke reminds Rey of the enduring presence of the Force and the legacy of the Jedi. This one phrase has been passed down through generations, linking the past, present, and future of the Star Wars universe.

This quote's repetition in the final trilogy ties everything together with a nice bow. It underscores the continuity of the Force across different eras and characters, truly timeless. No matter how dark things get, the Force will continue to live on.

2 “Confronting Fear Is the Destiny of a Jedi. Your Destiny.”

"Because she saw your spirit. Your heart. Rey, some things are stronger than blood. Confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi. Your destiny. If you don't face Palpatine, it will mean the end of the Jedi, and the war will be lost."

Why Did Obi-Wan Kenobi Let Darth Vader Kill Him in Star Wars?

Obi-Wan Kenobi let his former Padawan win their duel in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, which subtly paved the way for the downfall of the Empire.

This is it. This is the quote that defines the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Spoken by Luke Skywalker, this quote emphasizes one of the core tenets of the Jedi philosophy: the importance of facing and overcoming fear. It serves as a guiding principle for Rey as she prepares for her final confrontation with Emperor Palpatine.

This is the final lesson that Luke gives to Rey, solidifying in her the Jedi's mission to confront the darkness within and without. It's a powerful moment that ties together the themes of courage and destiny, reminding fans of what Star Wars is all about: holding on to hope, staying strong in the face of fear, and always looking for light in the darkness.

1 “You’re Nothing, but Not to Me.”

"They were filthy junk traders. Sold you off for drinking money. They're dead, in a pauper's grave in a Jakku desert. You had no place in this story. You come from nothing. You're nothing, but not to me. Join me."

Kylo Ren's relationship with Rey is complicated to put it lightly. At this moment, he's incredibly vulnerable, but he's also terribly manipulative. He tries to bind Rey to him emotionally by acknowledging her feelings of insignificance, which is destructive and awful. What makes this particular scene so heartbreaking is that fans want to root for Kylo and watch him turn away from the Dark Side, but know that this will probably never happen.

The internal conflicts of loss and destiny drive the story of the Star Wars trilogy, but Kylo's character development takes twists and turns, never falling into his destiny but instead running from it. The dynamic between Kylo and Rey only gets more complicated because he chooses to manipulate her instead of letting her help him. Ultimately, though, Rey picks the light over the Dark Side, proving that she is the true hero and that her heart is in the right place.

The original trilogy depicts  the heroic development of Luke Skywalker as a Jedi and his fight against Palpatine's Galactic Empire alongside his sister, Leia . The prequels tell the tragic backstory of their father, Anakin, who is corrupted by Palpatine and becomes Darth Vader.
