Everything You Need to Know About the 2024 Tour de Suisse Women

[table-of-contents] stripped

The 2024 Tour de Suisse Women starts this Saturday, June 15, with four stages ranging from 10 to 79 miles in length—including a whole lot of climbing. The start list is packed with top racers, including last year’s second-place finisher Demi Vollering, Kasia Niewiadoma, Elisa Longo Borghini, and many riders who can snag a stage win. Expect fast racing and big battles up steep pitches in this short stage race—with slightly lower mileage and half the duration of many of the major stage races, this one should be explosive.

Race History

The women’s iteration of the 87-year-old Tour de Suisse race was first added in the late 1990s but only existed for four years. A new women’s race was added in 2021.

The race is well known for its brutal (but picturesque) climbs up mountains in the Swiss Alps, such as the famed Gotthard Pass.

There are four stages in the Tour de Suisse Women, including one mountain stage, a mountain time trial, and two hilly stages. While the women will only cover 330 kilometers—just over 200 miles—in the four stages, they’ll climb a whopping 6,600 meters over the course of the race, making it a climber’s paradise. Stage 1, a circuit starting and ending in Villars-sur-Ollon—where the UCI headquarters is located— is considered the most difficult stage in the race, with over 1500 meters of climbing in just 35 miles.

  • Stage 1: Villars-sur-Ollon - Villars-sur-Ollon (58.6 km)
  • Stage 2: Aigle - Villars-sur-Ollon time trial (15.7 km)
  • Stage 3: Vevey - Champagne (125.6km)
  • Stage 4: Champagne - Champagne (127.5 km)

How to Watch the 2024 Tour de Suisse Women

If you’re in the U.S., Canada, or Australia, FloBikes ($29.99/month or $150 annually) is the best way to watch the Tour de Suisse Women. All four stages are available live and on-demand on FloBikes.com , the FloSports iOS app, and the FloSports app for Amazon FireTV, Roku, and Apple TV.

The Tour de Suisse Women will also be televised throughout the week on Discovery+ in the UK and Europe. However, there will be no Eurosport coverage.

What Happened Last Year

Last year’s race was shorter by 30 kilometers, with similar opening and time trial stages followed by two hilly stages of 100km and 120km. It was an SD Worx podium, with Marlen Reusser taking the win and Demi Vollering just over a minute behind her in the GC. But just behind them came Elisa Longo-Borghini, then of Trek-Segafredo, followed by Canyon//SRAM teammates Kasia Niewiadoma and Elise Chabbey.

Riders to Watch

Compared to the men’s race, which comes only two weeks ahead of the start of the 2024 Tour de France , the women’s peloton will have more recovery time between stage races since the

The Giro d’Italia Women doesn’t begin until July 7. That means, unlike the men’s race, which is missing some of the top competitors, like Tadej Pogačar , this field is seriously stacked with all of the top favorites.

Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) : Last year, Vollering was second behind her teammate Marlen Reusser in this race. This year, she’ll likely be looking for her first GC title at the Tour de Suisse, and without Reusser in the mix, she’ll almost certainly be the rider that the team is working for.

Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM) : Niewiadoma is always a threat in stage races and certainly has podium potential, but this year, she seems to be on a whole new level.

Niewiadoma also just had a break in Colorado for some altitude training and will likely be well-rested and ready to go head-to-head with Vollering. If you recall last year’s Col du Tourmalet stage at the Tour de France Femmes … things could get exciting on these mountain stages!

Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) : The Lidl-Trek team is sending a sold squad to back Longo-Borghini, who’s had a great season when it comes to one-day races but hasn’t quite put together a great stage race yet. She’s been on eight one-day race podiums this season and certainly will be hunting a solid stage race performance ahead of the Giro d’Italia Women and Tour de France Femmes.

Juliette Labous (dsm–firmenich PostNL) : Labous is always a bit of a sleeper in races, rarely getting the win, but also rarely far from the top five. She’s been on the podium in seven stage races in the last two years, including a fourth at this year’s Vuelta España Femenina . Certainly expect to see her on the podium, if not the top step.

Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Cannondale) : Faulkner just got named to the U.S. Olympic Track Team, but she’s still working hard on the road. She was second at the Tour de Suisse in the GC back in 2022, so a podium finish is well within her capabilities. She’s had some great results, including a stage win at the Vuelta España with her new team this year, and could certainly be going for more at this race before she shifts focus to the track.

Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck) : With the amount of climbing in this race, Kastelijn could be poised for a breakout result. She was third in the climber’s jersey standings at Vuelta España, and a race like this one is great for climbers who love punchy courses.

Jolana Neff (Switzerland): The Swiss enter a national team in this race, and it’s being led by mountain bike superstar and Olympic gold medalist Jolanda Neff. She’s a wildcard in this race—though admittedly, she’s using this race as a substitute for racing a World Cup MTB race at altitude in order to work on some breathing issues, so she may not be in top form. Still, she’s a super-strong rider and could send some shock waves through the peloton thanks to her formidable handling skills.

Watch favorites Demi Vollering and Kasia Niewiadoma battle it out over 330 kilometers and 6,600 meters of elevation at the four-day stage race starting June 15.

Tour de Suisse 2024 Route stage 6: Ulrichen - Blatten

Tour de Suisse 2024

The riders clip into their pedals in Ulrichen, where they originally would have descended the Nufenen Pass. The highest paved mountain pass in Switzerland peaks at 2,478 metres above sea level. A safe crossing is not possible due to large amounts of snow, so the climb is skipped, and racing starts at its base.

The riders now follow the Rhône downstream for 35.6 kilometres and then tackle a 6.9 kilometres climb at 9.3% to the mountain village of Blatten.

Starting at kilometre 38, the Golden Kilometre offers two opportunities to gain time bonuses of 3, 2, and 1 seconds. The first three riders at the finish line take 10, 6, and 4 seconds.

Stage 4: Torstein Træen claims a solo summit finish victory / As it happened Breakaway Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious) fended off a rampaging Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) to claim an emotional stage win at the summit of the Gotthardpass. Træen took off around 10 kilometres from the top of the snowcapped pass to claim a victory in honour of the memory of the late Gino Mader, who died tragically in the course of the race last year. Yates counter-charge from the peloton took the Briton to second place at the summit, 23 seconds back and he moved into the overall lead. Stage 3: Thibau Nys takes a small group sprint / As it happened Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) used a powerful sprint to clinch the victory in stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse on an uphill finish, holding off Stevie Williams (Israel Premier Tech) and Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost). Bettiol nonetheless moved into the overall lead after the peloton split on the rugged finale around  Rüschlikon Stage 2: Bryan Coquard wins stage 2 sprint / As it happened

Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) powered to his first victory of the season on stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse, jumping away from Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny) in the final 150 metres as the Belgian suffered the most untimely mechanical when starting his sprint. De Lie managed to restring and take third behind the Frenchman and Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla).

Stage 1: Yves Lampaert wins stage 1 time trial / As it happened

Yves Lampaert  (Soudal-QuickStep) clocked a time of 5:05 on the flat 4.77 km course in Vaduz to win the opening stage and take the first yellow jersey of the 2024 Tour de Suisse. Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-Easy Post) was second, three seconds slower and Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) in third place.

About the Tour de Suisse

Taking place June 9-16, 2024 the 87th Tour de Suisse is all about the mountains. Like its counterpart held in France, Critérium du Dauphiné , the Tour de Suisse is also used by pro teams and riders as a tuneup for the Tour de France .

Last year, Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) won stage 3 on the summit finish at Villars-sur-Ollon and claimed his first WorldTour stage race. Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), winner of two stages, finished second overall,  nine seconds back. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) was third.

Team Ineos Grenadiers won the three editions of the race, from 2019 to 2022.  In 2022, Geraint Thomas overhauled leader Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the stage 8 time trial to take the overall victory. Thomas went on to finish third at the Tour de France.

In 2021, Richard Carapaz took over the race lead following his stage 5 victory. The Ecuadorian then held onto his lead through the final three stages, including a mountainous final stage to Andermatt, to win the overall title. Carapaz finished third that year at the Tour.

Egan Bernal won the Tour de Suisse in 2019  and went on to win the Tour de France that year.

The Tour de Suisse, first raced in 1933, did not take place in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Before Bernal, the last Tour winner to ride in Switzerland as preparation for the Tour had been 2010 winner Andy Schleck, with the Critérium du Dauphiné often favoured as it allows for a longer recovery.

Slovakian Peter Sagan has the most stage wins, with 18, but never took the overall title. Three riders are tied with 11 stage wins, and they all came away with overall victories - the 2009 overall winner Fabian Cancellara, three-time winner Hugo Koblet (1950, 1953, 1955) and three-time champion Ferdinand Kübler (1942, 1948, 1951). Italian Pasquale Fornara is the leader in both number of overall victories, four times in the 1950s, and has spent the most days in the leader’s jersey, 17.

The 2024 Tour de Suisse Kicks Off This Sunday

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."

[table-of-contents] stripped

The Tour de Suisse is back starting this Sunday, June 9, with eight stages ranging from just under three miles to over 100 miles in length. After tragedy marred last year’s race with the passing of Gino Mäder , cycling fans are hoping for a safer, smoother race. As a race tightly scheduled ahead of this year’s Tour de France , it’s a great race for underdog riders to score stage wins or for Tour favorites like Tom Pidcock to test their teams and get ready for the big show.

Race History

This is the 87th edition of the Tour de Suisse, making it one of the longest-running stage races in the world. First run in 1933, it’s skipped years for World Wars and COVID-19, but nothing else. The race is well known for its brutal (but picturesque) climbs up mountains in the Swiss Alps, like the famed Gotthard Pass.

A women’s iteration of the race was first added in the late 1990s but only existed for four years. A new women’s race was added in 2021, and this year, it will cover four stages starting June 15. (Stay tuned for How to Watch the Women’s Tour de Suisse.)

There are eight stages in the Tour de Suisse, including two individual time trials to start and finish the race. Despite two extremely short time trials, the eight stages still cover 950 kilometers of racing and a whopping 19,000 meters of elevation gain. And considering the climbing doesn’t really get going until the second half of the race, expect some extremely grueling days for climbers from Stage 4 onward. But for the first few days, it’s a time trialist and sprinter paradise, with two relatively flat stages following the initial blazingly fast time trial. And the real challenge? The final stage. Sure, it’s only 15 kilometers. But it’s also 900 meters of climbing: The stage essentially goes from the bottom to the top of a mountain.

Stage 1: Vaduz - Vaduz individual time trial (4.77km)

Stage 2: Vaduz - Regensdorf (177.3km)

Stage 3: Steinmaur - Rüschlikon (161.7km)

Tour Director Olivier Senn said that this year, to win is to climb. “Only the best climbers will have a shot at overall victory. Stage wins, on the other hand, will be up for grabs for different types of riders.”

You can watch a preview of the route here:

If you’re in the US, Canada, or Australia, FloBikes ($29.99/month or $150 annually) is the best way to watch the the Tour de Suisse with all eight stages available live and on-demand on FloBikes.com , the FloSports IOS app, and the FloSports app for Amazon FireTV, Roku, and Apple TV.

The Tour de Suisse will also be televised throughout the week on Discovery+ in the UK and Europe. However, there will be no Eurosport coverage.

What Happened Last Year

It’s impossible to talk about last year’s race without first acknowledging the tragic death of Gino Mäder , who—along with American racer Magnus Sheffield—fell off of a cliff during stage 5 while descending on the Abula Pass. Sheffield suffered a concussion, but Mäder was found submerged in water at the bottom of the ravine. The accident led to many discussions around safety measures in races with steep descents, though little has been done since then to make racing safer.

In the race itself—which was subdued in the last three stages after Mäder’s death—Trek Segafredo rider Mattias Skjelmose took the overall win. At 22 years old, he’s just slightly older than second place, the 20-year-old Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates). Tour de France favorite Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step) finished in third.

Riders to Watch

This is a great race for some lesser-known talents to shine since many of the teams won’t send their big guns to a stage race this close to the Tour de France . But there are still some big guns like Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers). And with a time trial as the final stage, the racing could get interesting as riders try to create time gaps big enough that a single 15.7-kilometer time trial won’t make a major difference in the standings.

Tom Pidcock: It has to be said that Pidcock’s schedule for the next two months is wild. He’ll race Tour de Suisse, then the Crans-Montana MTB World Cup, and then hop into the Tour de France as race leader for INEOS Grenadiers, then head to the Olympics. No big deal.

Mattias Skjelmose: The Lidl-Trek rider who took the surprise win last year is back again for another attempt at a GC win.

Mark Cavendish : While Cavendish is obviously not a usual GC contender, expect to see the Astana Qazaqstan rider lighting up plenty of the sprint stages.

Stephen Küng: The Groupama-FDJ racer is one of the best time trialists out there, so with two ITT stages up for grabs, he’s definitely a contender for those wins at minimum.

Richard Carapaz : He’s won this race twice in the past, and the EF Education-EasyPost racer is likely still feeling particularly grumpy after being left off of the Olympic roster , which may give him the extra push he needs to take another victory.

Review: MOSCOW BALLET'S GREAT RUSSIAN NUTCRACKER 25TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR Enchants at The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theatre

pixeltracker

The Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker has once again returned to Syracuse, New York for two performances at The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theatre. This annual tour, produced by Akiva Talmi, is a holiday tradition that many look forward to seeing again and again - and for good reason; it is breathtakingly inspiring.

The story begins with Uncle Drosselmeyer (a poised, mysterious, and confident Maksym Bernadskyi) finishing up his life size magical toys - the sweet Kissy Doll (Iryna Borysova), the jester-like Harlequinn doll (Ivan Sitnikov), and the energetic Moor dolls (featured artists Sergey Chumakov and Elena Petrichenko). Drosselmeyer brings his magical toys to the Christmas Eve party at the Stahlbaum's (Olena Pikarska/Yuriy Kuzo) home where they put on quite the entertaining show for the children and adults in attendance. Maksym Bernadskyi starts the show strong as Drosselmeyer, and is spectacular and elegant throughout.

The party also features a puppet show to entertain the children, including Masha (Veronika Hordina). However, little does she know that her future dream for that Christmas Eve night is being foreshadowed in the performance. Masha receives a Nutcracker doll from Drosselmeyer and the mischievous Fritz (Zhan-Mishel Panchuk) breaks it with a sword. After the guests leave the Christmas Eve party, Masha goes to sleep and dreams that mice and The Rat King (Vladyslav Yevtushenko) come to duel with her brave Nutcracker in an epic battle. Masha then journeys with her Nutcracker Prince (Konstatin Vinvoy) through the Snow Forest meeting Russian Father Christmas "Ded Moroz" and Snow Maiden "Snegurochka" who bring them to the Land of Peace and Harmony.

Act II then begins in the Land of Peace and Harmony, featuring Moscow Ballet's exclusive Dove of Peace (Elena Petrichenko/Sergey Chumakov) dance. "2 dancers, 1 Dove of Peace," inspired by Stanislav Vlasov's (original choreographer for the Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker in 1993) similar work in the 1950's, showcases the couple's immense technical skills, athleticism, strength, and grace in a breathtaking way. Petrichenko and Chumakov's chemistry and passion is hypnotizing. Their spectacular white costumes, meticulously designed by Arthur Oliver, further the impact of the performance. Each costume features a feathered wing on one arm so as the two dance together, a single dove is created. All in all, it was one of the most beautiful dances I have ever seen.

Emissaries from all over the world then perform dances from their far off lands, including the Chinese Variation (Kaede Kojo/Vladyslav Yevtushenko), French Variation (Iryna Borysova/ Oleksii Potomkin), the high energy Russian Variation (Anna Bogatyr/Dmytro Bodyan), and the Spanish Variation (Su Tanaka/ Borys Iastrub). The intricate Arabian Variation is the most memorable. Featured dancers Elena Petrichenko and Sergey Chumakov steal the show once again with their acrobatic skills and seductive passion. They dazzle when Chumakov effortlessly flips and lifts Petrichenko. Their partnership is truly something very special and their jaw dropping dance moves are truly hypnotic.

Next comes another memorable moment - the Waltz of the Flowers performed by the corps de Ballet. They are truly magnificent as they dance in synch while wearing Arthur Oliver's stunning, flowing costumes.

In appreciation for the lovely performances and gifts that Masha and the Nutcracker Prince received they dance the Pas de Deux as a gift to their new friends. Veronika Hordina ensures this dance is memorable thanks to her amazing grace, passion, and facial expressions - she's always in character and this dance was no exception. Not only is her dancing superb, her acting stands out as well. Konstatin Vinvoy is a strong partner as the Nutcracker Prince. He is confident, strong, and fierce.

While the experienced professionals undoubtedly deliver exceedingly wonderful performances so too do the children from a local dance studio. Dance Centre North, directed by Cathy Napolitano Mucci, is celebrating 25 years of partnership with the Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker . The young ballerinas charm throughout the ballet as party guests, mice, snowflakes, snowmaidens, snowsprites, and much more.

Carl Sprague's set design also impresses. His perfectly flowing set transports us to the beautiful places that Masha visits in the Land of Peace and Harmony, as well as the Stahlbaum's grand home. I particularly enjoyed watching the tree grow larger and wider in Masha's dream. It was truly stunning. I especially loved all the intricately designed ornaments on the tree. All of Sprague's backdrops for the individual scenes were creative and brilliantly designed.

The Moscow Ballet's 25th Anniversary tour of the Great Russian Nutcracker is a definite must-see if you are lucky enough to live in a city where it is playing this year. The show enchants, excites, and hypnotizes and leaves the audience wanting more and more. It is a Holiday treat that will not disappoint, complete with some of the most amazing dancing, sets, and costumes you could ever hope to see.

Running time: Approximately two hours with one twenty minute intermission.

Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker played The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theatre for two performances on December 17, 2017.
