If you’re searching for information about Kualanamu Airport Medan, my best bet is you’re already planning to visit Medan. So, I just want to tell you this: welcome to my hometown!

Here’s a little bit of introduction and history about Medan’s Airport. Before 2013, Medan’s old airport, Polonia, was located right at the heart of Medan. However, the old airport was too small to serve 7.5 million passengers annually (it was designed to handle 900k passengers only), hence the new airport.

Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) was opened in 2013 and it’s located about 24km or 37km from Medan, depending on whether you take the toll or normal road. The normal road is about 24km but the road is narrow and traffic jam is common. In this post, I’m going to write about facilities of the airport as well as travel tips from the perspective of someone who calls Medan her hometown.

PS: As of mid 2022, a lot of shops are still closed. There are a few restaurants at Level 1 land-side (A&W and Solaris). Air-side, there are no restaurant at international departure gate, there are some restaurant at domestic departure gate. I didn’t notice any SIM card shop when I visited in mid-2022, you may need to buy SIM card at city. Train to Medan is still running.

Table of Contents

Arriving at KNO

1. arriving at kno: from plane to arrival hall.

Most of the time, passengers arriving at KNO are able to walk directly into the building via the bridge. However, on rare occasion, passengers may be lucky to walk down the plane’s staircase and walk on the pavement to the arrival hall.

2. Arriving at KNO: Immigration

From my personal experience, the immigration is never crowded. I always only spend maximum of 15 minutes. Locals and foreigners line up in the centralized line. No need to worry about line cutting or lining up at the wrong line. Indonesia no longer requires visitors to fill up immigration form, but they do require custom declaration (see the next point).

PS: If you need to go to toilet, the toilet before immigration a good place for incoming passengers because not many people use it so it’s quite clean.

3. Arriving at KNO: Baggage Claim

After immigration, it is the baggage claim. Look for your baggage and make sure you have filled up the custom declaration. Usually, airline crews would distribute the form on the plane. However, if you didn’t receive any forms, don’t panic. They’re also available at the baggage claim area. If you bring any of the item listed in no 11, you need to proceed to red line where you might be required to pay for tax. Read about custom requirement here (the website is bilingual, you can choose either English or Indonesia).

PS: Don’t ever throw away your baggage tag that’s usually attached to your boarding pass. Officers may check your tag against the tag on your luggage.

4. Arriving at KNO: Baggage Scan

Once you have collected your baggage, submit the baggage form at the exit and then proceed to scan your baggage and exit to the arrival hall.

5. Arriving at KNO: Free Wifi

As with other major airports, KNO offers free wifi without having to sign up. The speed is pretty good. However, once you turn off your phone’s screen for several minutes, the connection drops.

6. Arriving at KNO: Arrival Hall

At the arrival hall (Level 1), you find change money at money changer, withdraw money from the ATM center, purchase sim card, purchase food from restaurant or convenience stores, or ask questions at the tourist information center. There are also left baggage and pharmacy at arrival hall.

7. Arriving at KNO: Local SIM Card

There is a Telkomsel store called GraPARI inside the arrival hall near the building entrance. They sold prepaid SIM Card which has been pre-loaded with certain amount of data and talktime. Don’t be too fast to make a purchase. First, ask them for their price and details. Then, walk outside of the building and turn right, there is another smaller kiosk that sells prepaid SIM Card too. Make a comparison between the products offered by the 2 stores before deciding which one you want to buy.

From my own experience, the store outside the building sells cheaper SIM Card than the one inside the building. However, products and prices change all the time. So, it’s best to ask directly from the two stores and make comparison.

As of April 2019, the store inside the building sells prepaid SIM Card with 10GB data, few hundreds minutes of international talktime and 14-day validity for IDR 170,000. Meanwhile, the store outside the building sells prepaid SIM Card with 1GB data (IDR 65,000), 4.5GB (IDR 100,000) and 10GB data (IDR 135,000).

2022 Update: The below shops are closed since corona time. I didn’t see any shops selling SIM card during my visit in mid-2022.

Departing from KNO

1. departing from kno: entrance gate scan.

You need to scan your luggage, bags and everything you’re carrying at the entrance gate. At this gate, non-flying visitors are allowed to enter. No checking of boarding pass will be conducted. I guess it’s more like a general safety screening procedure.

2. Departing from KNO: Check In

Now, it’s time for check-in! There are a couple of self check-in machines to speed things up. If you have luggage, it’s better to check-in at the counter.

3. Departing from KNO: Last Minute Shopping and Dining

At this moment, I presume that you’ve already done all of your souvenir shopping in the city where goods are cheaper and fresher. But… if you haven’t done enough shopping, you can do so at several souvenir shops at the airport. I’d recommend Bolu Meranti, Lapis Legit or Kue Ambon; all of which are cakes.

If you are hungry and you wish to eat something before your flight, you’ll be spoiled for choice. There are so many delicious local and international food. You can find several photos of restaurants in the “Food in KNO” section.

4. Departing from KNO: Departure Gate

So, you’re ready to fly. But, first, you need to go through a security screening at the Departure Gate. Here, non-flying people are not allowed to enter.

5. Departing from KNO: Movie Theater

Surprise! This humble airport has a FREE Movie Theater! It is hidden under the escalator, below security scanning. It is located just in front of Gate 6. I wasn’t aware of this theater even though I’ve flown though Kualanamu Airport for so many years! One day, I was walking slowly and this theater appeared right in front of my eyes. It took me only 7 years to notice this little corner.

I went in to take a look of the cinema. Well, it is a small theater with less than 15 seats, so it’s a first come, first served. There is no show schedule, basically visitors can choose the movie from the available CDs. If there’s another movie that’s being played, of course you need to wait for the current movie to finish before you can request them to play your choice of movie. To be honest, the options are not much.

6. Departing from KNO: Domestic Departure Hall

After clearing the security screening, take the escalator or ramp down. On your right is the domestic departure hall. There are 2 lounges here, BRI and Sapphire Bluesky. At the end of the corridor, there’s a rest area and a kid zone that not many people know about. As for food, there are not many choices here.

7. Departing from KNO: Immigration

If you’re taking international flights, proceed to immigration located before gate 4. Here, there’s another security screening that you need to go through. Water is not allowed, but don’t throw your empty bottle yet, you can refill it after the immigration.

8. International Departure Hall

Finally, you’ve arrived at the secluded part of the airport. Here, you can refill your water that the water cooler near the toilet. At the farthest end of the terminal is the Sapphire Mandai International Lounge. There are several shops here but nothing too fancy. And there is a smoking room just beside the immigration.

Getting from Airport to Medan

1. getting from airport to medan: railink airport train.

This is the most popular method to travel between airport and Medan because it’s fast, safe, comfortable and not too expensive. It takes 42 to 45 mins from Airport to Medan.

It costs IDR 70k each way. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, or purchased over the counter. Sometimes there are promotions related to airline or credit card.

Read my full guide on the Kualanamu Airport Railink:

How to Travel Between Kualanamu Airport and Medan City by Airport Railink

The train station at the airport is located just in front of the arrival gate (Level 1). It’s only 1 min walk from airport entrance to train station. Based on my experience, tickets are rarely sold out, so if you’re afraid that your inbound flight got delayed, you can buy after you come out from the airport.

The train station in Medan (called “Medan Railway Station” in English, or “Stasiun Medan” in Bahasa Indonesia) is located at the heart of Medan. Centre Point Mall, one of the biggest malls in Medan, is just 5 min walk away from the train station.

To go to your hotel, you can book a Grab/Gojek from the station or from Centre Point Mall. Taxi is almost non-existent nowadays. If you do spot a taxi, make sure you take Blue Bird Taxi because it’s the trusted brand in Indonesia.

Kualanamu to Medan with Airport Railink Train

Railink airport train is my preferred transportation method when I’m traveling alone. However, if I’m traveling with my hubby, my preferred method is below.

2. Getting from Airport to Medan: Private Airport Transfer (Car)

Private airport transfer is my family’s favorite transportation method between airport and Medan. Why? Firstly, it picks us up from airport and sends us directly to home. Generally, it takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to travel from airport to Medan by car, and vice versa. Secondly, it’s way cheaper than taking the train if there are at least two persons.

Let’s compare. Two person taking the train = IDR 200k. From train station to hotel, it’s another at least IDR 20k. In total, it’s at least IDR 220k by train + taxi. A private airport transport costs between 150k to 250k (depends on the driver’s quote and car model).

Taking the train means at least 35 mins train journey, maybe 15 mins waiting time prior to boarding, 15 mins coming out from train and getting into a taxi, maybe 15 mins taxi journey. In total, it’s about 80 mins just to get from airport to Medan by train + taxi. My family and I usually spend 45 to 60 mins between airport and home. Less than 200k for a direct transfer sounds like a better deal for us.

If you are keen with this method to get to Medan city from the airport, I can assist you to arrange a private transfer with local drivers .

3. Getting from Airport to Medan: Public Bus

Taking public bus from airport to Medan is doable. It’s crazy cheap but also crazy long. Bus terminal at the airport is located on Level 1. After you exit the gate, turn right.

To get to Medan, take Damri bus and alight at Plaza Medan Fair (Carrefour). It costs about IDR 20k. From there, you can get taxi/Grab/Gojek to your hotel. The duration is approximately 1.5 hours to 2 hours, depending on the traffic condition.

If you’re not going to Medan, but instead, you’re going to Lake Toba or other big cities like Siantar, Tebing Tinggi, Kabanjahe, there are public buses or minivan that can bring you there directly from the airport. However, these buses/minivans will only depart when it’s full, so you need to be flexible in terms of timing. As of April 2019, the quoted fare from Kualanamu Airport to Parapat (Lake Toba) is IDR 90,000 per person in a 7-seater minivan.

Public bus Kualanamu Airport to Medan

4. Getting from Airport to Medan: Grab/Gojek

Uber is no longer around in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. Instead, there are 2 big ride-sharing companies in Indonesia at the moment: Grab (originally from Malaysia) and Gojek (from Indonesia). It is possible to take Grab/Gojek from airport to Medan and vice versa. If there’s no surcharge, Grab/Gojek is cheaper than taxi and private transfer. It’s a viable option to consider, however, the price may fluctuate due to demand and supply. So, use it at your own risk.

5. Getting from Airport to Medan: Taxi

Ah, taxi, the familiar sedan that we always know. Taxis run on meter so the final cost depends on the traffic condition (which is often bad in the city). I don’t personally recommend taxi as I trust the above options more, and they all less expensive than taxi. Again, it’s nice to know that in case you are in a rush, you can’t wait for the next train and you can’t get any Grab/Gojek, then you still have taxi as your backup plan.

Hotels near Kualanamu Airport

Your inbound flight arrives in Medan late at night and you dread making the long journey to Medan or Lake Toba in the dark. Your outbound flight will be leaving in the morning and you’re unsure if you can make it in time given the horrendous morning traffic in Medan. Consider staying at one of the hotels near airport. In fact there is 1 hotel right inside the airport and several others within 5 km from the airport.

1. Hotels near Kualanamu Airport: Horison Sky Kualanamu

Horison Sky Kualanamu is located at Level 1M of Kualanamu Airport building, so it’s extremely convenient for guests who have inbound late night flight or early morning outbound flight. Check latest price on Agoda and Booking .

Facilities: 24-hr reception desk, free wifi, buffet breakfast (check the terms&conditions of your hotel booking).

Airport Hotel Horison Sky Kualanamu

2. Hotels near Kualanamu Airport: Prime Plaza Hotel

Prime Plaza Hotel is a 4-star hotel located about 7 to 10 mins drive from Kualanamu Airport. If Horison Sky is fully-booked, or if you prefer a hotel with swimming pools, then I recommend Prime Plaza Hotel. Check latest price on Agoda and Booking .

The hotel provides free shuttle to/from airport. If the shuttle timing from the hotel doesn’t suit your flight timing, you can pay extra for private/shared car arrangement. From airport, you can simply get a taxi/Grab/Gojek.

There are some restaurants (local food, KFC, coffee place), Magic Eye 3D Art Museum, Hub Market (souvenir/convenience shop) opposite the hotel, but you need to cross the highway (there is a small road to cross under the highway, avoid crossing directly on the highway).

Facilities: free shuttle to/from airport, 24-hr reception desk, free wifi, buffet breakfast (check the terms&conditions of your hotel booking), swimming pool

3. Hotels near Kualanamu Airport: Wing Hotel

Located opposite Prime Plaza, Wing Hotel is also about 7 to 10 mins drive to the airport. It is a 3-star hotel and it’s cheaper than Horison and Prime Plaza, so it’s a good option for budget travelers. Check latest price on Agoda .

There’s a free shuttle to the airport (which needs to be arranged with the hotel in advance), restaurants/coffee shops, Magic Eye 3D Art Museum, Hub Market near the hotel (no need to cross the highway).

Facilities: free shuttle to/from airport, 24-hr reception desk, free wifi, buffet breakfast (check the terms&conditions of your hotel booking)

Airport Lounge

1. airport lounge: sapphire mandai international lounge.

Sapphire Mandai International Lounge is located at International Departure Hall (airside), which is only accessible by passengers flying out of the country. The lounge accepts various local credit cards as well as Priority Pass and LoungeKey. And, they also accept cash payment of IDR 110k per person (as of March 2019)! In my opinion, it’s better to pay by cash rather than use Priority Pass because IDR 110k is about one-third of the price that Priority Pass charges you for one visit, well, unless you have unlimited Priority Pass access.

2. Airport Lounge: Sapphire Bluesky Premier Lounge

Sapphire Bluesky Premier Lounge is located at the furthest end of Domestic Departure Hall (airside), which is accessible by passengers flying out of the city. Similar to Sapphire Mandai, this lounge accepts various local credit cards, Priority Pass as well as cash payment of IDR 110k.

Kualanamu Medan Airport - Sapphire Blue Sky Lounge

3. Airport Lounge: BRI Lounge

Located at Domestic Departure Hall (airside) beside Sapphire Bluesky, BRI Lounge is less crowded because it only accepts BRI eligible cardholders and JCB. It doesn’t even accept Priority Pass and cash payment!

Food in KNO

To be honest, there are too many restaurants/cafes in KNO that it’s fruitless to list everything here. And these shops change all the time. So, what I’m going to do is to include just some of the shops here. These shops are all located at Public area. If you want to know the latest list of restaurants, here they are .

My favorites? Kalasan, Kok Tong, KFC.

Facilities in KNO

Similarly, the number of facilities in KNO are too many to list out here. I’m including several important ones here.

Hello, may I ask something about the KNO immigration..does the new passport need to be valid for 6 months by then will we can travel or is there any circumstances that allowed foreigners to travel to Medan if their passport less than 3 months?

Monday 8th of January 2024

I think it's a universal rule that you need passport with 6 months of validity to travel overseas, unless you're returning to your passport's country. So, the 6-month validity rules apply everywhere, not just Medan.

Friday 20th of October 2023

I’m looking to do a self-transit in Medan.. arriving @ 19:20 and the departure of my next flight is @ 21:15.. do you think it’s possible? Even with a potential delay of my inbound aircraft?

thank you! Oliver

Noted, thank you! I will avoid this short layover.

Hi Oliver, to be honest I think it is very risky. Firstly, the baggage takes some time to come out. Secondly, I'm not sure if you need VOA, if you do, you'll need to buffer even more time. Personally, I wouldn't risk it. If both flights are on the same ticket itinerary, that's a different story.

Monday 12th of June 2023

Thank you for all the information. I will b flying into KNO first time in 2 days n flying out this weekend on international flights.

Do you know whether I can use the Saphire Blue Sky lounge in domestic terminal if I am flying out on international flight? (Ie. I use it first, then clear immigration and security checks to get to international departures? will this be allowed?) This is because I have priority pass which only allows free use of this lounge only as the Sapphire Mandai International lounge is no longer a priority pass lounge. If not, do you know whether they still allow u to buy entry into the Saphire Mandai lounge (n is it still IDR110,000)? I would like to know bec if I have no lounge access, then I will eat at the restaurants outside after check in before going into the departure area.

Do you know whether the Bolu Meranti shop at KNO is still open n also is there a shop there selling Buah Salak?

Tuesday 13th of June 2023

@Eva, Thank you, Eva😃

Hi Mark, I'm not sure whether it's okay to enter Domestic lounge before going through immigration, I have never done that before. I think you can give it a try, since you will pass through domestic terminal anyway. Regarding Sapphire Mandai International Lounge, if I recall correctly, last year we asked whether we could pay cash and they said can. I'm not sure whether it has changed or not this year.

To be honest, the food at Sapphire Mandai International Lounge didn't impress me at all (we went in to take a look and decided not to use the lounge), I would rather eat at one of the restaurants at landside, I think it's worth skipping (but this is just my opinion). I don't have any recollection about the food at Sapphire Blue Sky at Domestic Terminal.

As for Bolu Meranti, yes they still sell it at the airport (landside, departure level) when I visited in mid 2022. Regarding salak, you'll have better chance of finding it at supermarket in Medan City rather than airport :)

Monday 20th of March 2023

Hi, Are the simcard shops still closed?

Sunday 2nd of April 2023

Hi, sorry I am not sure, perhaps somebody here can chime in!

Monday 21st of November 2022

Hi Mun, the last time I went there in May, a lot of shops were closed. Hopefully they're open now. Yes, most of the restaurants serve halal food. For sim card, yes you insert it into your handphone or your portable wifi device.

Kualanamu International Airport ( KNO  IATA ) is an international airport in Deli Serdang , serving Medan and North Sumatra .

Understand [ edit ]

travel medan airport

Kualanamu International Airport is the main airport for Medan . The airport opened in 2013 replacing the civilian functions of Soewondo air force base known as "Polonia International Airport". Ultimately it was deemed that the old site couldn't be expanded and to alleviate noise in heavily populated areas a similar decision as in Munich and Denver was taken: moving all flights and civilian aviation equipment to the new site overnight. Because Kualanamu is far from Medan (the destination of most arriving passengers), it takes around one hour to get to the city by car (see the section on Ground transportation ).

Note that Kualanamu is not the only airport serving North Sumatra. If you're going to the areas of Pematangsiantar , then go to 2.26707 98.985237 1 Silangit Airport : it is reachable via another flight from Kualanamu as well as Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta . If you're going to the areas of Sibolga , then 1.553757 98.896484 2 Dr. Ferdinand Lumban Tobing Airport is reachable via Kualanamu and Jakarta as well.

Flights [ edit ]

travel medan airport

Kualanamu does not have terminals, but it does have two areas: an international area and a domestic/regional area. International flights are parked at the left side, while domestic and regional flights are parked at the right, looking from the north. If you're going on an international flight, you will have to be prepared for immigration and a security check. If you are going on a flight parked at the satellite area (indicated with the letter A at the gate number), go to gate 1 (for international) or gate 5 (for domestic) and go down the escalators; that's a hidden waiting area for you. Because all gates are combined (although domestic and international gates are bordered), you don't have to enter the entrance of your gate; you can wait at any gate for your flight.

If you treat Kualanamu as a transit airport, as you exit the aerobridge, you'll have to do the arrival process, take your luggage, and then go all the way up to the departure area using the elevator or escalator, and then you can just go right to the passenger area. If your plane is treating Kualanamu as a transit hub and you're going to ride the same aircraft again, you'll need to do the arrival process, skip the baggage part , go up, report your flight to the airline's agent at the transfer/transit desk, and then you can proceed to the gate.

Kualanamu has direct flights from across Asia, with the farthest coming from Saudi Arabia . The routes most in demand serve Jakarta, Singapore, and Penang, and those flights are often full. If you live in Amsterdam or London or are able to reach Medan via those airports, Garuda Indonesia often randomly commences routes between them, so be sure to check their schedule; usually you could just enter your airport and Kualanamu in Flightradar24 .

In Kualanamu, check-in counters are called "islands." There are 4 islands: Island A, B, C, and D. On all islands, there are also self check-in kiosks. Self baggage-dropping facility is only for AirAsia passengers.

Ground transportation [ edit ]

Map

Kualanamu is at Deli Serdang, which is an hour's drive from central Medan. You can get to Medan by car, bus or metro. The airport has had rail service since day one and it was the first airport in the country to be served by a railway of any kind. The metro is usually faster than the crowded roads and the predictability of the metro makes the trip easier to plan.

By metro [ edit ]

travel medan airport

There is a metro service connecting central Medan and Kualanamu named Kalayang Bandara Kualanamu (English: Kualanamu Airport Skytrain), operated by a company named Railink. The 3.634833 98.878387 3 Stasiun Bandara Kualanamu can be seen at the exit of the arrival area, which is the lowest floor; it's right in front of you. The 3.590888 98.679817 4 Stasiun Medan is near to a popular mall in Medan named Centre Point if you're interested. Prices are Rp100,000 for adults (Rp50,000 if purchased online ). The seats are a bit stiffer than a general economy class seat but are still decent. Night trains are usually lacking passengers, often you may be the only one there. The average time is 20 minutes. Here's the schedule:

By vehicles or rideshare [ edit ]

Go-Car, in-Driver, and Grab are online taxis (Uber has not operated in Indonesia since 2019). Grab is usually cheap and most in demand. There are also regular taxi options such as Bluebird, Puskopau, Matra, Abadi, Kokapura, and Nice Trans. All operate 24/7. Avoid them if possible, as they most often use taximeters which generate money based on journey time and distance and may enable scams. However, here are their contact numbers:

  • Abadi ☏ +62 269886868
  • Bluebird ☏ +61 846 1234
  • Kokapura ☏ +62 360124772
  • Matra ☏ +62 375405254
  • Nice Trans ☏ +62 375405254
  • Puskopau ☏ +62 262232425

Kualanamu has reasonably wide parking lot areas. If you want to park, go to the right side of the fork; go to the left for drop-off. Park a truck 3.636071 98.876478 1 here . There are two areas to park other vehicles. To go to the 3.634993 98.877041 2 section A or the truck zone, go straightforward once you passed the fork; to go to 3.633558 98.87865 3 section B , turn left at the roundabout, and then turn left. For the first two hours, cars are charged Rp5,000 ( Indonesian rupiah ), less-than-6-wheeled trucks are charged Rp10,000, and 6-wheeled trucks are charged Rp15,000. For the first 12 hours, motorbikes are charged Rp3,000. For more other hours, all vehicles are charged Rp1,000/hour.

If you want to keep your vehicle there for days (maybe because you are going on a flight and you can't bring your vehicle home), you can reserve an area: for the first six hours, cars are charged Rp20,000, less-than-six-wheeled trucks are charged Rp35,000, and six-wheeled trucks are charged Rp50,000. For additional hours, all vehicles are charged Rp2,000/hour. Motorbikes are ineligible for reservation. If you do so, your vehicle will be secured 3.632735 98.879423 4 here . Keep the parking/reservation ticket : losing one will cause you to be charged Rp100,000.

By bus [ edit ]

Buses operate from 07:00 until the last flight lands. Prices range from Rp15,000 to Rp55,000. They are parked outside the arrival area, and nearby them is a counter for you to purchase. Here is a list of them:

If you’re not going to Medan, but instead Lake Toba or places nearby, there are shuttle buses or minivans that can bring you there directly from the airport. However, these buses/minivans will only depart when it’s full, so you need to be flexible in terms of timing. Prices are around Rp90,000 for a 7-seater minivan.

Get around [ edit ]

Kualanamu is not that big an airport, so you'll be walking 100% of the time. There are 3 distinct floors in the airport; you can transfer between floors by elevator or escalator. If you're going on an international flight whose gate is far on the edge, there are two travellators you can use to save time. Upon request, a 6-seater golf cart will transport you around the passenger area.

The arrival area is, in a sense, quite cramped. So be sure to know where you're going to and don't lose your mind. Departing travellers are expected to be present at the boarding lounge 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. If you are late, the PA will give you two calls, and then a final call. If you are not in sight after the final call, bye-bye birdie.

The standard boarding lounges includes chairs, free computers for use, and charging stations, as well as for an aviation enthusiast, planes! There's also a curved TV streaming sport channels in select areas. But if you are bored, there is a lounge at the domestic area opposite of Gate 12 called the Sapphire BlueSky Executive Lounge, open from 08:00 to 17:00 everyday. For international passengers, the Sapphire Mandai Lounge opens from 05:00 to 22:00 everyday. Maximum time in both lounges is 3 hours. There is a lounge membership you can order for future entry; Priority Pass also offers membership. Garuda Indonesia has an executive lounge nearby Gate 10 for business/executive-class passengers and those with a SkyTeam card; regular passengers may enter with cost. Bank company BRI also has a lounge nearby Gate 10. A lounge called Tixspot is also available for people booking their flights through Tiket.com , opening from 05:00 to 21:00. There's an executive restroom, shower room, and meeting room. Normal price is Rp. 170,000, but it is often discounted.

If you want some entertainment by watching movies, there's a movie theater nearby the ramp leading to the departure terminal, with the blue sign "Bioskop Bandara." Its door is bordered colorfully, with a gray sign "MOVIE THEATER." There are 10 seats for standard class and 12 for executive class. Unlike general movie theaters with a scripted schedule, Kualanamu's theater stores a handful of home media; simply pick a movie, and they'll project it. Don't expect it to be big; it's just an average wide TV, but it does have surround speakers. See here , here , and here [dead link] for a glimpse of the theater.

A game center is also available, open from 07:00 to 22:00.

For children, there is a playground at the passenger area.

There are two relaxation stores: one at the departure area named B'Relax and one at the arrival area named Batik Spa .

Outside the airport, there is a garden that you can walk around at.

Arrival [ edit ]

Upon arrival, you will usually wait at the carousel for your baggage. But for Garuda Indonesia business/executive class or SkyTeam passengers, you can wait for your belongings at an exclusive arrival lounge. When your belongings are available, it'll be taken to you at the lounge and you can leave.

Eat and drink [ edit ]

There are a decent number of restaurants, stalls, and minimarkets in Kualanamu.

In departures, there are the cafe chains Starbucks and Excelso, as well as signature Indonesian restaurants like Ayam Goreng Kalasan, Chop Buntut, Es Teler 77, Kok Tong Kopi, Old Town White Coffee, etc. There's also an Indomaret minimarket: from the north, simply head straight, and right-- Indomaret's right at the edge. Unlike other Indomarets, this one sells frozen carbonated drinks too.

If you are at the arrival area, an Alfamart with a seating area nearby. For restaurants, there's A&W, Dunkin Donuts, D'Penyetz, KFC, Maximum, Maxx Coffee, Ichiban Sushi, etc.

In the passenger terminal, there are a couple of restaurants (notably Excelso and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf) and bread shops too. Bika Ambon and bread shops are scattered around the airport. In level 2, there's also a restaurant.

There is an ATM at the arrival area, but only mostly operates Indonesian banks. It does operate Maybank , Visa , MasterCard , and Cirrus . A money exchange area is also at the arrival area opening from 06:00 to 20:00: the currencies available are euro, US dollar, Singapore dollar, Malaysian ringgit, Japanese yen, and the Chinese yuan.

If you want to buy a SIM card, there are two Telkomsel stores outside and inside the arrival area. The indoor store is named GraPARI, while the outdoor store is named Broadband Corner KNO. The indoor store sells prepaid SIM Card with 10GB data, few hundreds minutes of international talktime and 14-day validity for Rp170,000. Meanwhile, the store outside the building sells prepaid SIM Card with 1GB data for Rp65,000, 4.5GB for Rp100,000, and 10GB data for Rp135,000.

Kualanamu is filled with stores from a spectrum of genres. You can buy watches at a Swatch store at the departure area. Other stores in the departure area includes Converse, Beauty Forever (make-up store), Cotton On, Batik Keris (batik-motif boutique), iPort Shop (selling gadgets and luggages), Polo, Puma, KImia Farma (phramacy store) and more. At the international passenger area, there's a library, identifiable with its black design.

Connect [ edit ]

Free Wi-Fi is available. There are 2 networks: [email protected] and [email protected]. The first Wi-Fi is faster than the second.

At the departure area, there is also a post office called "POS Indonesia." There's also a courtesy telephone between Island C and D, behind the information counter.

Cope [ edit ]

travel medan airport

There is a small mosque at the arrival and passenger area. They're often independent: there's no leader.

Sleep [ edit ]

Although there is a rest area as mentioned above, it is not for a long sleep; doing so may annoy some passengers. If you want an overnight sleep, you can go to 3.635621 98.876773 1 Horison Sky Kualanamu , on Level 1M of the airport (from the departure area entrance, go up the escalator once). There's also the 3.598214 98.830444 2 Wing Hotel Kualanamu , which is just few minutes away from Kualanamu. Another cool hotel is the 3.5994 98.831757 3 Prime Plaza Hotel ; there is a shuttle pickup service to/from the hotel for free. If you're an aviation enthusiast, check out 3.52109 98.785057 4 870 Aero Hotel : it has a retired Boeing 737-200 that you can enter, although you can't enter the cockpit (you can glimpse its dirtiness from outside in nighttime), and the beds and restaurant are decent.

Stay safe [ edit ]

This airport uses double-sided elevator, thus you should stay aware which door that will open as there is no indicator.

In case you are stuck in the elevator because of earthquake or power failure, always watch your step when the elevator's door forcibly opened, because sometimes there is a huge gap between the elevator and the floor.

Nearby [ edit ]

If you are an aviation enthusiast and is still outside of the airport , there are 5 planespotting areas beside the airport's sole runway, the most popular being 3.637686 98.868156 1 Pondok Kualanamu Tengah , at an area named Pasar Enam Kuala Namu. It is made by the locals there. You'll have to get pass some bumpy roads along the way, considering it is in a village. There's also a food stall, and an artificial lake for kids to ride duck-shaped boats in, too. The four other places are 3.631883 98.862214 2 KNO Sidourip Pantai Labu , 3.630194 98.860448 3 this unnamed location , 3.626439 98.856613 4 this other place , and also 3.619988 98.849303 5 this professional place , depending on the angle you want to planespot.

When visiting North Sumatra, the Medan city is usually the main place to start, but you can also add Binjai as an addition to Medan; it's right at the corner of Medan. Other cities to visit include Kabanjahe, Tebing Tinggi , Tanjungbalai, Pematangsiantar , Labuhan Batu, especially the regency the airport is at, Deli Serdang. There's also Mandailing Natal, the iconic Karo , Simalungun, Batubara, etc.

Medan airport train – everything you need to know

travel medan airport

  • 25. November 2023

Most travellers arrive at Medan airport to explore North-Sumatra. Therefore it is handy to know on how to get into the city in case you stay here overnight. Luckily there is a handy solution: The Medan airport train or Kualanamu Airport Rail Link.

This train serves as a vital transportation link connecting Medan to Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) in North Sumatra. Kualanamu International Airport, situated 23 km east of central Medan, replaced the former Polonia International Airport in 2013 due to safety concerns associated with its central location.

The government concurrently developed an integrated airport railway, operational since the airport’s inauguration on July 2013. The Medan airport train station is strategically located opposite the arrivals terminal, offering convenient access for travelers. The train route extends from Kuala Namu airport to the Medan Railway Station in the heart of the city.

The schedule of the medan airport train.

Despite its enviable setup, the service has a minor drawback: a limited timetable. However, considering the airport’s size, this seems reasonable. Travelers may encounter waiting times between departures, as the trains operate on a fixed schedule. Fortunately, the station is well-equipped, nestled within the airport’s transport hub alongside a bus station. Travelers can explore nearby cafes and restaurants while enjoying free airport Wi-Fi.

Schedule as of December 2023

travel medan airport

For the latest schedule check their website .

The train station in conveniently located oposite the arrival hall. So when you collected your luggage and left the security area, head to the exit. Walk straight ahead and you will see the entrance of the train station. Upon arrival at the station, a prominent sign displays upcoming departures.

Ticket prices are reasonable, with a ticket costing 65,000 IDR (ca 4 Euro). The ticket maschines are located right in the station hall, with an attendant for assistance.

While not as advanced as electric airport trains in other cities, they provide a comfortable and air-conditioned journey. Dedicated airport carriages with luggage racks cater to the needs of travelers. Although lacking power outlets, the train offers modern facilities, including well-maintained toilets.

Covering a distance of 27 km with a three stops, the journey takes approximately 45 minutes. While not express fast, the train provides a more comfortable alternative to buses or taxis.

The route concludes at Medan Station, conveniently located in the city center, opposite the main square and close to the old town. Travelers seeking convenience and comfort for their airport commute can check the official website for the schedule and plan their journey accordingly, ensuring a smooth and timely arrival or departure experience.

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link: The Medan airport train

August 31, 2023 By James Clark 2 Comments

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link

The Kualanamu Airport Rail Link is an airport railway connecting Medan to Kualanamu International Airport.

Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) is the airport serving Medan in North Sumatra . The airport is located 23 kilometres east of central Medan and not in Medan (thus it is not Medan International Airport).

The airport opened in 2013, replacing Polonia International Airport which was located in central Medan. While the old airport was a convenient location for Medan, the location was considered dangerous for this growing city.

Fortunately the government had the foresight to build an integrated airport railway that was ready for service on the day the airport opened on 25 July 2013. The Kualanamu Airport Rail Link station is opposite the arrivals termnal, and the train goes the Medan Railway Station in the middle of the city.

It sounds almost too perfect for an airport rail link in Southeast Asia , so I was looking forward to seeing this. Here is my review of the service and what to expect.

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link map

Official Website: railink.co.id

Kualanamu International Airport

Kualanamu is breeze for foreign travellers as there are so few foreigners going through immigration. There are signs pointing to the station, which is opposite the arrival exit on the ground level.

There was a large sign showing the next departure, and this is where I encountered the only flaw in this otherwise great service. The airport railway runs on a limited timetable, which I guess is fair enough for an airport this size. I just so happened to arrive when a train had just departed, and the next train was not for another 1 h 20 m.

The station is in the transport hub of the airport, with a bus station next to it. I’m glad I wasn’t in a hurry, otherwise I might have had to consider taking the bus. There are cafes and restaurants nearby, and the free airport wifi is in the train area, so I stuck it out.

Airport train waiting area at Kualanamu International Airport

There is a ticket office at the station with an attendant on hand to help if you can’t work out the ticket machine.

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link ticket machine

My ticket cost 70,000 IDR ($4.60 USD).

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link ticket

The trains are diesel multiple unit (DMU) which are trains with on-board diesel engines. Not as ideal as the electric airport trains of Bangkok or KL, but at least there is an airport train.

Kualanamu Station

The train looks modern and it has comfortable seats and air-conditioning. The carriages are dedicated airport carriages with luggage racks.

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link luggage rack

There are no power outlets though, which would not have been a priority in 2013 when the train service started.

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link seats

The train has nice toilet facilities as well (another reason why the train is better than the bus).

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link toilet

The track distance is 27 km and there is only one stop on the way at Bandar Khalipah (for connecting intercity services).

Kualanamu Airport Rail Link route map

The trip takes 36 minutes, so it is not express fast but it is still a more comfortable ride than the bus.

Medan Station is right in the city centre, opposite the main city square and near the old town.

Behind the station also has an entry point, in front of the Centre Point Mall.

I had an early flight for my departure from Medan, so I got the first train of the day. Check the schedule on the official website .

So 50IDR (40 + 10) to go from town to the intermediate station and then go on to the airport instead of 70IDR for the entire journey, if I’m reading this correctly.

Similar to KL where you can get off and then get on the next train and save a few IDR. Not really worth it when you have to wait around and inconvenient to get the 2nd ticket. Don’t ask how I know for the KL airport train.

No overhead racks for smaller bags?

' src=

September 1, 2023 at 12:59 am

yes, they have copied other airport railways around the world by charging a premium for the airport section. There aren’t enough other trains though, so you could get stuck waiting. I had considered doing this in KL on my recent trip, as the Putrajaya MRT not connects to the Putrajaya Airport station. The MRT are even advertising that you can do this to save some ringgit, but it turns out that if I took the Putrajaya MRT I would still have to faff about getting another train to get to Chinatown.

Oddly there are no overhead racks, while the rest of the North Sumatra trains had overhead racks.

How to get from Medan International Airport to Medan?

Medan International Airport (locally known as Kuala Namu International Airport) is located roughly 40 kilometres away from Medan city. Since it is quite far from Medan, it is important that you are well informed of the transport options available in order to make the correct decision when you arrive. Based on our recent trip to Medan here is a step by step guide on how to get from Medan International Airport (Kuala Namu) to Medan city.

The ticket purchasing area within the Rail Link Station, central Medan.

1.  By Train (Rail Link)

This is arguably the best option from Kuala Namu International Airport to Medan. The rail link takes approximately 45 minutes from the airport. The rail station in Medan is centrally located and looks nice and new. The station has complimentary Wi-Fi and it is air-conditioned.  Although it isn’t the quickest train in the world, the scenery is quite pleasant along the way and you will get a tiny feel of rural life in Sumatra. We travelled from Medan to the airport on the train and it was an overall good experience with no issues to speak of.  One unique feature of the rail link is that buying tickets in bulk saves money. Below is an overview of the rail link prices based on our trip to the airport.  Keep in mind that you will have to pay in Indonesian Rupiah.

The Rail Link departing Medan station for Kuala Namu International Airport

Rail Link Cost:       1 ticket = 80,000 IDR ($6.70 USD)

                             2 tickets = 150,000 IDR ($12.50 USD)

                             3 tickets = 200,000 IDR ($16.70 USD)

                             4 tickets = 250,000 IDR ($20.80 USD)

  2.  By Taxi

This is not the cheapest option if you are travelling by yourself.  But if you are travelling with a group of people (4 total pax.) and you plan to share the cost, then it becomes the cheapest way to get from Medan International Airport to your hotel or guesthouse in Medan. Although traffic was alright when we took a taxi around 8 pm from the airport to central Medan it definitely could get congested. It took around 50 minutes at this time of the night. If you arrive late at night or early in the morning traffic should not be too bad. Be prepared for some horns and some weaving motorcycles along the way! Also, make sure that you get an official receipt when you purchase your ticket as there are touts lurking in the airport who will try to arrange trips in private vehicles to Medan city.

Taxi Cost: Approximately 210,000 IDR ($17.50 USD) depending on drop-off point in Medan.

Our Suggestion:

If you are travelling by yourself then take the train.  It’s cheaper, more comfortable and it eliminates the need to worry about traffic. If you are with a few people and your hotel or guesthouse is far enough from the rail station then taking a taxi may be the best option.

How to Find the Cheapest Room in Medan?

I suggest staying near the airport train station in Medan for convenient access to transport options. If you want to check out hotels in the vicinity of the train station then click here . Avoid taking a taxi if you are landing or departing around peak traffic times as this introduces avoidable risk to your trip.

Medan is a great city for room bargains.  During our trips there we have used two different useful sites: Agoda and www.hotelscombined.com . Agoda is Southeast Asia’s most popular room provider, whereas Hotelscombined.com has one many travel awards for its highly effective price comparison searches. Either one of these should help you secure one of Medan’s room bargains!

If you have any additional questions or comments about our recent trip to Medan from Medan International Airport (Kuala Namu) or the reverse direction then feel free to comment below.  Safe travels!

HOW TO GET TO LAKE TOBA, INDONESIA

HOW TO GET TO LAKE TOBA, INDONESIA

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

As the largest archipelagic country in the world with over 17,000 islands, there is so much more to Indonesia than Bali. Boasting rich flora and fauna, diverse culture, and hospitable people, the country’s tourism industry is never short of resources for attractions and destinations that you can add to your bucket list. Recently, the government launched the 10 New Bali Project, which aims to introduce more tourism hubs in the country! One of them is Lake Toba.

Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world is located in the province of North Sumatra on the island of Sumatra. It is home to the Batak ethnic group. The enormous lake is surrounded by seven regencies: Samosir, Toba Samosir, Simalungun, North Tapanuli, Karo, Dairi, and Humbang Hasundutan.

There are two gateways: Silangit International Airport and Kualanamu International Airport. If you are coming from Manila, there’s no direct flight to either airport, so you need to do a stop or transit at Jakarta. Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta connects the capital city to many other cities in Indonesia. Arriving at either Silangit or Kualanamu, you must go to the town of Parapat in Simalungun Regency, located on the edge of the lake and the usual jumping-off point to Lake Toba, providing the shortest eastern link to Samosir Island.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

From Silangit Airport

travel medan airport

Silangit Airport is located in Siborong-borong, North Tapanuli, North Sumatra. The airport is undergoing renovations and development to further serve the area, especially Lake Toba.

  • From Silangit Airport, there are limited transportation services as of the moment, but Damri Bus covers tourism routes around Lake Toba including a service shuttle to Parapat. Other options are booking a private transfer or taking a GrabCar service. Note that when you book a private transfer, give the company or the driver a heads up if there are changes in your flight schedule. The travel time to Parapat from the airport is more or less 2 hours. The fares are around IDR 25,000 (PHP 93, USD 1.7, EUR 1.6) for local buses and around IDR 350,000 (PHP 1300, USD 25, EUR 23) for taxis.
  • If you like to go to Samosir Island, located right in the middle of Lake Toba, go to Port Tiga Raja (also Simalungun Port) in Parapat and take a ferry. The fare is IDR 15,000 per person (PHP 55, USD 1, EUR .97). The ferries can take you to different points on the island including Tomok Village, Tuktuk Village, and Ambarita Village. The travel duration is 30-45 minutes.

From Kualanamu Airport

Kualanamu Airport is located in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. It serves North Sumatra’s capital, Medan, which is over 160km from Parapat. To reach Parapat, you have two options: train and bus. Unless you are a big group, taking a taxi or booking a private transfer is quite expensive considering the distance. If you plan to explore Medan before going to Lake Toba, other transportation options from the airport to the city center is Grab and GoJek.

  • From the airport, there’s an airport rail link. This conveniently links the airport to the Medan Main Station. The fare is IDR 80,000 (PHP 296, USD 6, EUR 5). The travel duration is 30-35 minutes.
  • From Medan Main Station, take the Siantar Ekspres Train (U58) to Pematang Siantar Station. Note that there is only one trip scheduled daily at 2PM. It’s better to be there an hour early. The fare is IDR 22,000 (PHP 82, USD 1.5, EUR 1.4). The travel duration is around 4 hours.
  • From Pematang Siantar Station, take a bus to Parapat. The fare is IDR 20,000 – 40,000. Travel time is about an hour or two, depending on the traffic condition.
  • If you are planning to visit Samosir Island, go to Port Tiga Raja and take a ferry for IDR 15,000 per person. The travel duration is 30-45 minutes.
  • Via Amplas Bus Terminal. From the airport, take the Damri Bus to Amplas Bus Terminal in Medan. The fare is IDR 15,000. Travel time is around an hour or two, depending on the traffic condition.
