17th TourMIS Users’ Workshop & International Seminar 2022, Vienna

September 8, 2022 - september 9, 2022.

vienna tourism conference 2022

#TourMIS2022

The 17th TourMIS Users’ Workshop & International Seminar on the Future of the Business Travel Following the COVID-19 Pandemic “Unlocking the Secrets for a Sustainable Transition” will be hosted in Vienna, September 8-9, 2022. It is organised jointly by City Destinations Alliance , the  European Travel Commission  & Modul University Vienna and is aimed at city, regional, national, and international tourism organizations, as well as universities and companies from the hospitality and tourism industry.

It is directed toward managers, academics, as well as consultants and representatives of governments and international organizations dealing with tourism. Participants are invited to register for both days or can choose to participate in just one event.

Day 1: The evaluation and monitoring of marketing activities is vital in helping tourism managers develop marketing strategies. Nowadays, technology provides valuable support to facilitate the performance of complex analyses and TourMIS, the leading tourism marketing information system in Europe, effectively serves this aim. By attending the workshop on the first day, led by Professor Karl Wöber, founder of TourMIS, participants will learn how to enter tourism statistics into the system and how to use the various benchmarking tools to produce valuable market research reports.

Day 2: The international seminar on ‘ The Future of Business Travel & Events ‘ on day 2 will be led by ETC. To remain competitive within the global tourism sector, it is important to understand how different segments within the industry navigate their path of recovery as travel restrictions ease. Business travel – including corporate travel and the meetings and events industry – is a key market segment for many European destinations and has been drastically affected by the pandemic. The ability to meet through technological means became vital during the pandemic, and such developments continue to accelerate even as travel resumes. Meanwhile, extended periods of isolation and the limitations of technology have shined a light on the importance of in-person meetings. The key objective of this event will therefore be to understand what the future of business travel and meetings look like. Key topics will be ‘Trends and Outlooks’, ‘Sustainable Transition’, and ‘Digital, Physical, or Hybrid meeting formats’.

Both days have been planned to encourage the active participation of delegates in the program. We look forward to meeting you for a motivating and challenging few days in Vienna!

Fees: 90 € for in-person participation 120 € for online participation

Vienna 2023: Host of EuroCHRIE 2023 Conference is Announced

Vienna 2023 – changing realities. new opportunities..

Hospitality & tourism businesses as well as hospitality & tourism educators are confronted with a cascade of ‘Changing Realities and New Opportunities’, with some evolving literally overnight.

These Changing Realities not only accelerated the development of New Work Realities and Digital Transformation, but we are also seeing a shift in consumer behaviour, travel patterns as well as teaching methods and didactics. Local has become the new global, health-related issues and hygienic standards are new determinants of travel behaviour and E-Learning activities are no longer considered as ‘nice to have’ but have become a key component of tourism & hospitality education. In other words, lately the change of realities as we know it dramatically accelerated. We as the hosting organization invite the CHRIE community to discuss the effects of change on hospitality and tourism education for the years to come.

Vienna – the most eastern city in the west, and most western city in the east

With its successful blend of imperial tradition and contemporary creativity, the Austrian capital has established itself as a major player in the global tourism market. With 17.6 million overnight stays in 2019, the Viennese tourist industry posted the best performance in its history – pre-Covid 19. In 2019 the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) ranked Vienna in sixth place for international congresses worldwide. Accessibility, infrastructure and leisure opportunities all contribute to Vienna being a must-see destination. Not to mention the Sacher cake…

The hosting organization, the FHWien der WKW is Austria’s leading university of applied sciences for management and communication. Working in close contact with Austrian corporations, FHWien der WKW offers comprehensive and practice-oriented academic programs to over 2,800 students.

Our first degree program in Tourism Management was launched in 1994. Since then, the range of degree programs offered has increased year by year. Today FHWien der WKW offers a total of 18 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs.

Florian Aubke, head of tourism and hospitality management study programs and conference chair says: “We are delighted to have been chosen as the host for the annual EuroCHRIE conference in 2023. Following successful conferences in Aalborg and Apeldoorn, Vienna aims to provide a conference experience that blends traditional perspectives with contemporary approaches to hospitality education post-Covid 19.”

Vienna's Tourism In Numbers

Market and marketing research are at the heart of the Vienna Tourist Board’s strategic operations. As a direct result of the pandemic, demand for – and the availability of – data, studies, webinars and other sources of information for the industry has mushroomed over the past few years. It is safe to assume that this will also be the case in 2023 and beyond.

In 2022, the Vienna Tourist Board once again evaluated visitor satisfaction levels with a view to improving the visitor experience on the basis of the T-MONA survey, which comprised around 1,700 online interviews (due to the substantially lower number of tourist arrivals in the first half of the year, the number of interviews was correspondingly lower than it had been in previous years). Ongoing monitoring of attitudes to tourism among the Viennese population was back to full strength in 2022, with around 3,600 of the city’s residents participating in an online survey during the year. The result: nine out of ten Viennese residents have a favorable view of tourism in the city – a figure that remained stable throughout the pandemic.

The Art Museum in the Digital Age – 2022

vienna tourism conference 2022

The Belvedere Research Center is continuing its conference series on the digital transformation of art museums with its fourth event on the topic. The COVID-19 pandemic, and our resultant inability to experience proximity to people and objects, has given the matter additional “virulence” in museums. Although the topic of digitization was gaining ground before the pandemic, the measures taken against the virus created a very special experimental arrangement in which the digital presence of museums was no longer merely a possible extension of exhibition spaces but rather the only way to reach the public. While the focus of our 2021 conference explored the premise of a crisis-induced return to the museum’s own collections, this time it shifts to questions beyond binary concepts, such as media specificity, hybridity, and mixed reality. In five thematic blocks, the lectures of the online conference by international experts deal with how the digital and the analog can be productively, conceptually, and aesthetically interwoven in a museum setting.

UNIS/SGSM/1267 26 September 2022

The Secretary-General

Message for the world tourism day, “rethinking tourism”, 27 september 2022.

World Tourism Day celebrates the power of tourism to foster inclusion, protect nature and promote cultural understanding.

Tourism is a powerful driver for sustainable development. It contributes to the education and empowerment of women and youth and advances the socioeconomic and cultural development of communities. It plays a critical part in the social protection systems that form the foundation for resilience and prosperity.

We must invest in clean and sustainable tourism, lowering the sector’s energy consumption, adopting zero-emission pathways and protecting biodiversity. We must create decent jobs and ensure profits benefit the host country and local communities. Governments, businesses and consumers must align their tourism practices with the Sustainable Development Goals and a 1.5°C future. The very survival of this industry and many tourist destinations, such as Small Island Developing States, depends on it.

This year’s UN Ocean Conference, where the global community and the tourism sector committed to building a legally binding agreement on plastics pollution by 2024, represents an important first step.

There is no time to waste. Let us rethink and reinvent tourism and together, deliver a more sustainable, prosperous and resilient future for all.

Vienna Migration Conference

Europe’s leading forum on migration.

Save the date – VMC2024

We are pleased to announce that VMC2024 will take place on 22-23 October. Save the dates – more details to follow.

As we prepare for another insightful conference, we invite you to explore the highlights from last year’s edition of the VMC.

Our conference

Every autumn, ICMPD ’s annual flagship event offers an indispensable opportunity to discuss unfolding geopolitical dynamics, global trends and the current EU migration agenda. It is the premier international platform for high-level discussions on migration in Europe and beyond, where debates put the spotlight firmly on the state of play in migration diplomacy and where real progress among key partners can be made.

Our mission

Today’s world is interconnected and constantly evolving, and so is international migration. Realities and perspectives are as dynamic as the flows and effects of migration. They differ not just among but also within countries and stakeholder groups. Making progress and finding common ground in this ever-changing and divisive policy area requires a platform for a continuous, structured debate and open discourse.

The Vienna Migration Conference (VMC) provides just that: a trusted space for frank exchanges, where decision-makers and practitioners discuss the latest developments and trends and outline their visions for the road ahead – on stage, in side talks and through networking.

VMC provides space for the exchange of a wide range of perspectives. In so doing, it sheds light on key migration-related opportunities and challenges – along routes to and within Europe, as well as for countries of origin and transit and other European partners.

Our outreach

We make use of our global network to bring together decision-makers, thought leaders and frontrunners in the migration sphere to convene, connect and engage.

Over the past eight editions, VMC has attracted ministers, leading experts and practitioners from governments across the EU, Türkiye, Western Balkans, Africa and Asia, as well as top figures from international and non-governmental organisations, academia, media, civil society and the private sector.

We stream most of our debates online, which brings VMC to the doorsteps of the wider migration community and ensures the broadest possible outreach. The conference is covered by international and local media and we share the highlights and analysis of the debates through social media, interviews and a conference report.
