The new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport metro railway will become the transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and the growing region. The city-shaping project, from St Marys through to the new airport and Bradfield City Centre, will provide a major economic stimulus for Western Sydney, supporting more than 14,000 jobs during construction for the NSW and national economies. The 23-kilometer new railway will link residential areas with job hubs including the new Bradfield Metro Station (previously Aerotropolis), and connect travellers from the new airport to the rest of Sydney’s public transport system. The Australian and NSW Governments have awarded all three major contracts for Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project. The tunnelling contract was awarded in December 2021, to CPB Contractors and Ghella Joint Venture to build the new twin metro rail tunnels. In March 2022, the contract to deliver approximately 10.6 kilometres of elevated viaduct, earthworks for track formation, a rail bridge over the new M12 motorway, a rail bridge within the airport and associated works, was awarded to CPB Contractors and United Infrastructure Joint Venture.  In December 2022, the largest Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract in New South Wales was awarded to Parklife Metro. Parklife Metro will deliver six new stations between St Marys and the new Bradfield City Centre, 12 new metro trains, core rail systems and the stabling and maintenance facility to be built at Orchard Hills. Parklife Metro will also operate and maintain Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line for 15 years after it becomes operational.

Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport stations

Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project has been working with stakeholders and industry to create a project that will deliver a fast, safe and reliable metro and support the success of the future Western Parkland City.

The project includes six new metro stations at:

  • St Marys, interchanging with the existing suburban railway station and connecting customers with the rest of Sydney’s rail system
  • Orchard Hills, to service a future commercial and mixed-use precinct
  • Luddenham, to service a future education, innovation and commercial precinct
  • two stations within the airport site, at the airport terminal and at the airport business park the commercial heart of the Western Sydney named Bradfield City Centre.

Exact station locations have now been confirmed .

The Australian and NSW Governments have a shared objective of having Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport operational when new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport opens for passenger services.

Planning and compliance

Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project received planning approval from both the Australian and NSW Governments in 2021.  Planning approval from the Australian Government for Sydney Metro’s rail development work located within the boundary of Western Sydney International (on-airport) was received in September 2021, while NSW Government planning approval was received in July 2021.

The Environmental Impact Statement was on public exhibition between 21 October and 2 December 2020. A Submissions Report was prepared to address submissions received from the community and stakeholders through the NSW planning process. The Australian Government off-airport approvals were received in June 2021.

Early works started in 2020, with major construction, including station excavation, commencing in late 2022.

Further information about planning and compliance documentation for the project is available here , and from the websites of our major contractors involved in the project:

  • Station Boxes and Tunnelling (SBT) – CPB Contractors and Ghella Joint Venture
  • Surface, Civil and Alignment Works (SCAW) – CPB Contractors and United Infrastructure Joint Venture

Flight paths

Visit the new WSI airspace and flight path design Online Community Portal ( www.WSIflightpaths.gov.au ) to keep up-to-date on information about the WSI flight paths and engagement opportunities.

The process for developing the flight paths for Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) is well underway and on track for the airport’s scheduled opening in 2026.

Designing flight paths for a new airport is a large, complex and technical task. The design of the new flight paths for WSI must balance competing needs from the community, environment, industry and users of the broader Greater Sydney airspace, while maintaining safety as the priority.

The preliminary flight paths for WSI will be assessed for their environmental impact under the Australian Government’s  Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 . A draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the preliminary flight paths was released on 24 October 2023. People have until 31 January 2024 to make a submission on the draft EIS. The draft EIS examines the noise, social and environmental impacts of the proposed flight paths.  The preliminary flight paths have been designed and tested by an Expert Steering Group established by the Australian Government, which consists of technical experts and government agencies including the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and Airservices Australia. For more information about the role, structure and governance of the Expert Steering Group, read the Terms of Reference PDF: 386 KB .

The  Forum On Western Sydney Airport (FOWSA)  links the community and stakeholders with the Australian Government and the Western Sydney Airport Co Limited (WSA Co). The expert team developing the flight paths will regularly brief FOWSA about the project. FOWSA will ensure community and stakeholder views are heard in the development of flight paths. The Chair of FOWSA also attends Expert Steering Group meetings as an ex-officio member.

Find out more information and visit the WSI airspace and flight path design Online Community Portal  www.wsiflightpaths.gov.au .

The Online Community Portal  has been updated, with the preliminary flight paths and draft EIS.  It also includes:

  • The Overflight Aircraft Noise Tool, an online interactive map that will display the preliminary flight paths and their noise impacts. The community will be able to enter a street address and receive information about that address’ potential impacts from flight paths.
  • The draft EIS in a digital format. A submissions portal to provide formal feedback on the draft EIS.
  • Educational and information resources will continue to be updated to provide easy to understand information on the flight path planning process.
  • Details of community information events where you can find out more about the draft EIS and talk to members of the Flight Paths Team.

Sunday 22 September, SYDNEY: Super charity NSW Kids in Need is hosting its fifth annual Open Day event giving a rare glimpse inside some of Sydney’s most unique places.

The Open Day on Sunday, 22 September will raise much-needed funds to support the vital work of six child-focussed charities by offering exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to Sydney Airport and naval base Garden Island.

The tour at Sydney Airport offers guests direct access to the world of aviation. The 90-minute journey will take ticket holders on the airfield, showcasing the runways, the airport’s three terminals and many of the unique and interesting parts of the airport precinct that passengers never get to see.

General Manager Corporate Affairs Sally Fielke said that Sydney Airport is proud to partner with NSW Kids in Need.

“the open day event series is a great initiative that supports nsw kids in need to assist children who need it most, while giving the community an exciting opportunity to go behind-the-scenes of australia’s busiest airport,” ms fielke said., “sydney airport celebrates its centenary this year and we’re thrilled to share our rich history as part of this unique event.”.

At Garden Island the Royal Australian Navy will open the gates for guests to explore HMAS Melbourne*, a 4267-tonne guided missile frigate capable of surface and undersea warfare, surveillance and reconnaissance.

Ship tours will be complemented by land-based displays by the specialist Navy Clearance Diving Team and Australian Army.

HMAS Melbourne Commanding Officer Marcus Buttler said the open day offers an incredible chance for civilians to access Garden Island and explore the last commissioned Adelaide class guided missile frigate in the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet.

“On a special hour-long guided tour, guests will get a glimpse of HMAS Melbourne’s sophisticated command and control systems, weapons and helicopter operational ability.

“The ship’s motto, ‘She Gathers Strength As She Goes’, is particularly apt for the fantastic work of the six charities supported by NSW Kids in Need. We’re delighted to include this open day in the ship’s activities before she is decommissioned in October after more than 28 years of service.”

NSW Kids in Need Chairman Peter Debnam said he continues to be humbled by the enthusiasm of all partners involved in the event, which over the past five years has raised more than $600,000.

“We are all passionate about making a difference in the lives of the many children who face daily challenges and to be able to assist these amazing charities is a great privilege.

“Without the help of Sydney Airport and the Royal Australian Navy giving us access to these two unique experiences, we would not be able to help in such an impactful way.”

“We’re looking forward to another fantastic day and thank our champion supporter 2GB for helping us spread the word. Tickets to both Sydney Airport and Garden Island are strictly limited, so don’t delay.”

western sydney airport tours

If someone in Sydney travelled directly north, they’d go 3,000 kilometres before they reached another country. Going east or west is over three times the distance, and south would take them to an icy wilderness awash with penguins.

Sydney is incredibly remote. But despite this, it’s home to 5.23 million people, with an additional 16 million people visiting the city every year. 1 pushing its only airport to its limits.

With so many people coming and going (soon to restart), Sydney’s existing airport has reached capacity, prompting the confirmation of a second airport after decades of debate—Western Sydney Airport. In this article, we’ll explore the essentials for Sydney’s new airport, so that you can get a better idea of its location, open date, flight paths, and more.

Western Sydney Airport

Western Sydney Airport will be located in Badgerys Creek, a Sydney suburb roughly 41 kilometres west of the CBD, 13 kilometres south of Penrith, and 20 kilometres north of Campbelltown.

The airport’s site was chosen 34 years ago by the Federal Government but was followed by much dawdling, until eventually being reconfirmed in 2014.

The Badgerys Creek site was chosen for the following reasons:

  • The nearest suburban residences are over 10 kilometres away. By comparison, Kingsford Smith Airport is just 0.6 kilometres away from suburban residences, which is the reason for its 11pm to 6am flight curfew. 3 Western Sydney Airport will be curfew free, allowing it to ferry millions more passengers every year
  • The site is close to road and rail transport links, which are cost-effective to extend, making the airport accessible

Construction for Western Sydney Airport began in 2018, and is expected to be completed by 2026, with the airport fully operational. 2

Airport Size

The Badgerys Creek airport site is roughly 1,780 hectares—twice the size of Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport.

In the short term, the airport is designed to cater to around 10 million passengers per year, with a single runway that can accommodate the largest commercial aircraft. By 2063, with the construction of a second runway, the airport is expected to accommodate 82 million passengers per year. 4

Both domestic and international flights will operate out of Western Sydney Airport.

Flight paths

Initial flight paths were confirmed by the government in 2015, but after extensive community backlash, have since been marked as “indicative.” These initial flight paths included flying over Blaxland, Warragamba, Wallacia, Greendale, Silverdale, Luddenham, Glenbrook, Lapstone, Emu Plains, Penrith, St Marys, and Twin Creeks.

Western Sydney Airport Towns

Towns affected by Western Sydney Airport’s “indicative” flight paths

For the airport to be successful, a number of effective transport links are needed. This includes extensive road and rail upgrades, allowing people to quickly access the airport.

$3.6 billion is being spent as part of the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, which includes upgrades to the following roads and intersections:

  • Ross Street Intersection—Glenbrook
  • Werrington Arterial Road
  • The Northern Road and Erskine Park Road
  • Smithfield Road
  • Bungarribee Road and Flushcombe Road
  • Wetherill Street
  • Cumberland Highway
  • Bringelly Road
  • Eagle Vale Drive
  • Porrende Street
  • Argyle Street / Camden Valley Way

Travel time from the Sydney CBD to the new airport is currently an hour, but it’s unclear how much quicker this will be after the road upgrades.

Western Sydney Airport - Roads & Intersections

Proposed road and intersection upgrades. Image from Western Sydney Airport

The airport is likely to be serviced by three rail lines: 5

  • East-West Link from an extension of Sydney Metro West. This will be available by the airport’s opening date in 2026.
  • North-South Link from Schofields to Macarthur
  • New North-South Link from St Marys to Badgerys Creek Aerotropolis

Unfortunately, there’s no current plans for a high-speed rail service, so journey time from Sydney’s CBD will be roughly an hour. 6

Express bus routes will run to the airport’s precinct from Penrith, Liverpool, and Campbelltown. Other bus routes are yet to be announced by the project’s planners.

Why is it being built?

Sydney’s flight demand is forecasted to double by 2034, to around 76 million passengers. By 2060, that figure is expected to be a whopping 145 million passengers. The city of Sydney simply can’t accommodate that many people with a single airport, which would cost them billions of dollars in lost revenue. Sydney needs a second airport.

How much will it cost?

Initial costs for the airport were estimated at $2.4 billion.

Jobs and growth

The airport is expected to generate the following jobs and revenue: 4

  • 11,000 jobs in construction, engineering, and professional services
  • Construction period—$1.9 billion for Western Sydney’s economy, and $400 for the rest of the city
  • 15,000 jobs by the early 2030s, and 87,000 by the early 2060s. This includes the following occupations:
  • Office services and admins
  • Technicians and trade
  • Community and personal service
  • Professionals (engineers, air traffic controllers, etc.)
  • Machinery operators
