History [ ]

Early life [ ].

Joey was born on a Wednesday of April 22, 1964. He is of Mexican descent and has said that he grew up in the Bay Area and in San Diego. It is not clear where he lived first or when he moved, but he has said that moving away from San Diego was one of the two worst mistakes he has made in his life. He was raised Roman Catholic.

Joey studied at Harvard in the early 1990s, graduating with an associate's degree in Culinary Arts/Chef Training. He previously attended Grossmont College in El Cajon, CA, where he studied Political Science and Anthropology. He has stated that he also attended San Diego State University.

Culinary career [ ]

Joey spent many years in the restaurant industry as a manager of several establishments. Some of his jobs included Manager/Owner of The Burrito Factory, Sous Chef at Umunhum Food & Wine Restaurant, Pastry Chef at The Village Cafe, and Kitchen Manager at Charlie Blair's Pizza & Grill. He cooked with Michelin Star chefs David Kinch of Manresa and Michael Miller of Trevese.

Joey also wrote a blog called "Sublime Flavor!". It began in 2008 and ended in 2013 when the domain expired. The blog's tagline was "A global food and wine blog dotted with mouthwatering recipes, musings, and reviews!" On the "About" page, Joey wrote "The goal of this site is to provide you insights, recipes and musings about food, wine, life and dessert!" The early days of the blog featured Joey's original recipes and reports about local food businesses. Later, it evolved to feature mostly recipes from other sites and news about the food industry.

Since 2012, Joey has worked as a personal chef and caterer for Sublime Flavor Catering.

YouTube career [ ]

The JoeysWorldTour YouTube account was started on April 20, 2007.

Joey has said that he didn't know he was going to be doing food reviews, otherwise he would have called the channel something else, like Joey's Food Reviews.

The first video uploaded to the channel was "A Cannery Row Seagull" on February 6, 2011. The next video was not uploaded until June 11, 2012 [this does not include any videos that have since been deleted or made private]. The early days of the channel featured more food challenges, cooking demonstrations, and non-food-related videos. Uploads become more frequent in mid-2012 and 2013.

Joey's first food review "KFC Boneless Chicken REVIEWED!" was uploaded on April 14, 2013. The channel subsequently became more focused on food reviews.

Joey has said that he got into YouTube food reviews "by accident." He was between jobs in 2012 and began uploading food challenges and cooking videos to pass the time. One day, he decided to do a fast-food review in his car. Initially, he was accused of copying YouTube user Daym Drops , who uses a similar format for his videos. However, Joey contacted Daym and received his "blessing" and support, and decided to continue doing reviews.

Joey continued with regular uploads of food reviews and gained more views and subscribers. On May 8 2013, Joey told his viewers his channel had just hit 200 subscribers, and on May 11, he stated that it had "close to 300 subscribers." He said he hoped to hit 1,000 "someday."

At some point in late 2013 or early 2014, Joeys became affiliated with Daym Drops as a member of #TeamDaym. The first video to feature the #TeamDaym logo was "Baskin-Robbins Movie Theater Popcorn Ice Cream REVIEW!" on January 14, 2014.

As the channel became more popular, the video upload rate increased to 3 per week (uploading on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).

In 2016, the channel continued to grow, and a new influx of viewers came in as Joey was featured in videos by Pyrocynical and LeafyIsHere . This helped propel Joey to internet meme status. In May 2016, Joey reached 100,000 subscribers. This burst in popularity helped Joey become one of the most prominent food reviewers on YouTube at the time; fellow food reviewer TheReportOfTheWeek (Reviewbrah) acknowledged Joey as his "biggest competition", though he denied any serious rivalry or bad blood between them. [1]

Joey has fallen victim to a death hoax on July 24, 2020. [2]

Content [ ]

JoeysWorldTour features several kinds of episodes:

Food reviews [ ]

Joey reviews a food or drink item. These videos are branded as "Joey's Super Kool Food Reviews" and make up the vast majority of the channel.

Joey speaks to his viewers on various subjects.

Food challenges [ ]

Joey attempts a food-related challenge, like eating an entire jar of Nutella without using his hands. Several of these videos have been set as private and are no longer viewable on the channel.

Cooking with Joey [ ]

Joey demonstrates how to cook a recipe.

Joey visits an event or location (examples include Disneyland and WrestleMania Axxess).

Reception [ ]

The channel has received mainly positive reviews. Most criticized him for his poor eating habits, enormous appetite, and his unhealthy lifestyle. On April 24, 2016, Joey uploaded a food review of Burger King’s chicken onion rings. That video gained negative feedback due to Joey complaining for more than half the video that Burger King gave him the incorrect box. The video has over 4,000 dislikes as of April 2020, making it one of the worst performing food reviews on his channel, reception wise. Joey typically ignores the negative feedback he receives nowadays, though he did respond to a few of them in the early days of his channel.

Production and filming [ ]

Most of Joey's food reviews are filmed in his vehicles. He appears to have two trucks, a Chevrolet Tahoe and a Ford pickup. He tries to drive to an isolated location where he won't be seen making the video. [3]

To film the video, he places the camera on a tripod between the seat and the dashboard. In many reviews, he places the food on the dashboard before eating it and turns the camera around to shoot a closeup of the food. The video then cuts to Joey's face again, giving him an opportunity to say his famous catchphrase, "I'm back!". [3]

In 2013, Joey showed his viewers that he wrote down the name of every subscriber to his channel. Subscribers who were "haters" or who cyberbullied other users received an asterisk next to their name. It is unknown if Joey still writes down every subscriber to this day. The same notebook also contained notes for his reviews. [3]

Revenue [ ]

It is unknown how much Joey earns from his videos. He has stated that his YouTube income does not cover his expenses, and he still works as a chef and caterer on the weekends. [4] [5]

Who or What is JoeysWorldTour?

Joseph Leon Hernandez was born on 22 April 1964, in San Diego, California, USA. He is a chef and caterer, but best known as a personality and for his YouTube channel called JoeysWorldTour. He primarily uploads videos reviewing new releases from top restaurants or fast food establishments in the country. He also occasionally uploads other videos including food challenges, traveling, vlogs, and others.

The Wealth of JoeysWorldTour

As of early-2020, JoeysWorldTour has a net worth estimated to be over $100,000, earned mostly through a successful career online.

While the growth of his channel has also meant more revenue, he has admitted that it isn’t enough for him as a source of income, so he still works as a chef and caterer, which helps in building his still relatively modest wealth.

Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings

Joey grew up in San Diego and loved it there, and while he moved away for some time, he returned to his hometown as he could find no other better location to live in. At a young age, he loved food and had a strong passion for the culinary arts. After matriculating from high school, he enrolled at San Diego State University.

He didn’t think that a career in the food industry was viable at the start, so he transferred to the El Cajon-based Grossmont College where he took up a degree in Political Science and Anthropology. After a year into his course, he realized that he wasn’t happy, and then fully dedicated himself to food, transferring to  Mission College  in Santa Clara to complete an associate degree in culinary arts, and after graduating training to become a chef. He then began working full-time in the restaurant industry.

Cooking Career and Online Beginnings

While Joey was good at cooking, he served more in a managerial position at the restaurants he worked at, due to his inherent leadership skills.

He later started a restaurant called  The Burrito Factory  which he also managed. He also worked as the Kitchen Manager at Charlie Blair’s Pizza & Grill, but also on several actual cooking jobs during his career, including at Trevese where he trained under Michael Miller, and at Manresa where he cooked under David Kinch. Other jobs he took included becoming the pastry chef at The Village Café, and sous chef at Umunhum Food & Wine Restaurant.

In 2008, he wanted to express his love for food even further and not just through a regular job. He created a blog called “Sublime Flavor!”, meant as a way for him to do more with food other than just managerial duties and straightforward recipes.

He did review posts, shared some of his recipes and talked about anything that related to food. He posted some original creations, as well as reviewing nearby establishments. The blog ran for five years until he decided to move away from it, and started a business called  Sublime Flavor Catering .

YouTube Career

Joey had already created a YouTube  channel  in 2007, but didn’t upload any videos until four years later. The channel became a natural transition from his vlog, with similar video content akin to his blog posts. He did cooking demonstrations, vlogs, food challenges, and developed it more like a vlog channel with a strong featureconcentration towards his passion for food.

In 2013 he released his first video, reviewing the KFC Boneless Chicken, and it got a lot more views than expected, leading him to focus on doing more reviews. He often did reviews in his car, and his entertaining commentary as well as his improvisation, made him a favorite among viewers. He was initially accused of copying the style of another YouTuber, Daym Drops, who also similarly reviewed food. He later asked permission from Daym and got his blessing, leading to the two collaborating as a part of #TeamDaym. The growth of his channel was slow, but he managed hundreds of subscribers over the next few years.

As the channel grew in popularity, he began uploading videos more frequently, on a regular schedule of three videos a week.

YouTube Breakthrough

In 2016, YouTuber critics LeafyIsHere and Pyrocynical began doing features regarding Joey’s channel – these channels were known for doing humorous critiques of other channels which have led them into numerous feuds and controversies in the past. However, the opposite was true for Joey, as instead of people hating on him, he gained an influx of new followers, with his channel quickly reaching 100,000 subscribers, maintaining a steady growth over the next few years.

https://t.co/BgGd9Oj2d7 — Joey's World Tour (@JoeysWorldTour) July 21, 2019

He became a  meme , with his energy and enthusiasm for food being the topic among many online.

In 2019, a rapper named Lil JM began making parody songs with references to Joey. His fame even caught the attention of mainstream media outlets, and he was featured in the Comedy Central show “Tosh.0”, and basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal also featured him in “Upload with Shaquille O’Neal”. Another program he was featured in was on National Geographic Channel’s “Science of Stupid”, and a local newspaper in San Jose, California also did a feature on him in an article called “Move Over Hollywood, This is the Age of the YouTube Star”.

While he has consistently posted on YouTube since the early-2010s, he maintains his catering business and works as a chef.

Personal Life

There is not a lot of information that has been revealed about Joey’s personal life as he’s mostly just shared about food on YouTube. It is assumed that he is married and has children. Observant viewers noticed that he owns around four cars just based on the different car interiors seen in his videos.

Posted by Joeys World Tour Official on  Saturday, July 8, 2017

He also mentioned that his earnings on YouTube are not enough, which is why he continues his catering business, indicating that he may be supporting more than just himself.

Responses to him have been divisive, with people enjoying his entertaining improvised content, and others are weirded out by his personality. He’s admitted to being a shy person, and only does his food reviews in private locations when there aren’t any other people around. His strongest following comes from people who enjoy his meme content, often commenting positively or jokingly about his videos.
