Best travel locations for winter in Pakistan

The world has seen a stand still like never before. COVID-19 has altered the landscape of many economic sectors and tourism is probably amongst the worst affected. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, 53% of destinations worldwide have observed reduced travel restrictions by now. Pakistan officially announced reopening tourism on October 5, 2020 for passengers that have taken necessary steps to make sure they are COVID free.

Before the pandemic, Pakistan was finally breaking through its stereotype image. It was being seen as an affordable vacation destination that is a home to a friendlier and progressively unique culture. Tourism in Pakistan has re-opened with hopes of providing a healthy and safe destination. With an approaching winter season many of the country’s tourist spots are preparing for breathtaking snow-covered views and enchanting winter wonderland-like feels.

For those who are considering an international trip or are already here and were wondering exactly where to go this winter, here is a list of our favorite locations.

  • Malam Jabba
  • Gilgit-Baltistan
  • Qila Rohtas
  • Mohenjo Daro
  • Cholistan Desert

Let’s sneak into each one of them in detail along with their popular attractions.

Scenic Sites

1. malam jabba, swat, kpk.

Malam Jabba

Where am I going?

Malam Jabba, Pakistan’s oldest and largest ski resort , is positioned in the Hindu Kush range at a height of 2,804 meters (or 9,199 feet). This stunning resort is located roughly 50 kilometers away from Saidu Sharif, the capital city of Swat. The charming holiday spot attracts a number of tourists, domestic as well as foreign.

What can I do while I am there?

The ski resort has a ski slope of around 800 meters and is popular for its highest slope, at an estimated 9,000 feet (above sea level). A captivating display of the snow-covered valley below makes its chairlift ride most enjoyable. Chairlifts and skiing aside, this pleasant resort features ice-skating rinks, zipline, and free-fall. However, its best to ask about all activities at the entrance as it is difficult to obtain tickets later on.

If you are the one who enjoys a good snow trekking session you should definitely explore two well-known trails located in the area. One around 18 kilometers from the resort towards Shangla Top. The other almost 17 kilometers from the resort and passes through Sabonev Valley.

This beautiful valley also has ancient Buddhist stupas and monasteries aged to at least 2,000 years old providing for some historical fun.

What is the weather like?

The temperature in December varies from its highest temperatures reaching 6°C (43°F) and lowest temperatures down to -6°C (20°F). This is obviously a place to enjoy wintery snow-clad mountainous views while sipping piping hot coffee. IF you would like to visit at a time where you can enjoy a more pleasant temperature in the afternoon and cold evenings then you might want to consider visiting in January. The cold weather would have lifted just enough to allow you to appreciate winter and not have to go through the chilling cold even with the sun out.

Where can I stay?

This particular resort is accessible year round guaranteeing less trouble finding hotels and restaurants nearby. Since there has been an increase in the number of foreign visitors, you can be assured to find modern accommodations suited to make your stay comfortable.

If you are looking for a luxury stay you might be interested in Pearl Continental or Serena. For a more private experience, you can also find fully equipped villas for you and your friends or family with a host to bring an element of ease throughout your visit.

2. Kalam, Swat, KPK

Kalam

Kalam is a gorgeous valley packed with the sublime beauty of thick forests, chiseled mountains, and mesmerizing lakes. At 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) above sea level, it is popular with tourists because of the glaciers of Matiltan, Kundol Lake of Utror and medicinal springs of Gabral. All unique sites to see are in a 20 kilometer radius of Kalam.

The most popular attraction is the three hour trek from Kalam to experience the pristine view of Kundal Lake and its enchanting surroundings. It is highly advised to make the trip with a guide just to make sure you follow the right branch of the Swat River.

You can also take a jeep if you want to skip the walk to reach the Kundal Lake of the Laddu Valley. This would take half the time in case you are running low in time and would like to squeeze in this worthwhile visit.

If you are up for a little travel while in Kalam, you might want to make a small trip to Mahodand Lake in the Usho Valley. It is about 40 kilometers from Kalam, which you might want to have a jeep or any four wheel drive vehicle to cover with. The lake is surrounded by mountains and has a forest like island in its center that you can get to with the help of a bridge. This relaxing destination is a great quiet place to catch up on fishing. Purchase fishing permits for a small amount from Kalam’s PTDC prior to your visit for an uninterrupted soothing fishing session. It is also prepared for boating and rafting activities.

Kalam itself is surrounded by the gift of an abundance of natural waterfalls. You will find most of these waterfalls in the forestry that decorates the area.

You can expect to experience a relatively warm and temperate climate while in Kalam. The city sees a significant amount of rainfall even in its dry months. The average temperature is 4°C (39°F) in December and around 1.5°C (35°F) by January, which is its coldest month. Temperatures can go as low as -2°C (28°F) and 8.1°C (47°F). If you are visiting in December, you will be able to benefit from the warmer weather during the day.

Where can I Stay?

Most hotels and accommodations would be found 45 to 50km away from Kalam. They are furnished to provide comfort, warmth, and a variety of hot meals after the cold weather fun. If you are up for a little adventure you can camp under the stars with a little help from PTDC (Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation). While touring the lakes keep in mind that you will be able to find packed snacks and bottled water, however, the remote location causes the food to be pricey.

3. Gilgit-Baltistan, KPK

Gilgit-Baltistan

This is the Pakistan’s northern-most territory. Gilgit-Baltistan is an extremely mountainous district with Gilgit as the capital city. Gilgit-Baltistan houses five of the world’s eight-thousanders and greater than fifty peaks that are above 7,000 meters (23,000 feet). With reference to glaciers out of the Polar Regions, Gilgit hosts the world’s three longest glaciers.

Since the area is packed with mountains and glaciers, it attracts international and national trekkers and mountaineers.

While in Gilgit you might want to explore the Karakoram Highway with family and friends on a simple cycling tour. It’s a sporty activity that you will never forget. Gilgit’s tough winter is inviting to hardcore climbers and trekkers worldwide that also complete their excursion with nights at a camping base.

Naltar is a forested region with three lakes; the Blue Lake, Satrangi Lake, and Bodlok Lake. It also has an interesting garden, Halima garden, near the lakes which is something to see. For the difficulty level of this terrain you will find that four wheel drive vehicles are best suited for travel through these delightful destinations. The Naltar Valley has its own Ski competitions held at the Naltar ski resort. Chair lifts are a great way to appreciate the beauty that surrounds it and Naltar Valley has the longest chair lift in all of Gilgit Baltistan. The Naltar Wildlife Sanctuary is close to the ski slope for an additional activity on your to-do list.

Gilgit Baltistan sees three months of harsh winter weather starting in December. December holds an average high of -12°C and a low of around -24°C degrees. If you would like the comfort of a warmer winter-like experience you might want to consider visiting in November or March.

There are two ways to enjoy a trip to Gilgit. The first would require a one-on-one with nature, meaning right there at the camp base in a tent under the starry winter sky. This should be done with proper planning and arrangement so that you have all the necessary equipment and permissions. The second would be home-like relief with comfortable and cozy amenities. From Gilgit Serena to cosy lodges, you can find hotels and lodges that fit both luxury and budget-friendly trips.

Historical Sites

Rohtas Fort

Apart from soaking in the history at the fort itself, you should definitely take the time to visit Mangla Dam . The dam is a mere 50 minute drive from Jhelum. You can find an arrangement of various water activities that can be arranged for last minute fun.

The best time to visit this historical marvel is the winter season, you can enjoy it instead of feeling exhausted and overheated. The winter is pleasant and warm under the sun with average high temperatures at 21°C (70°F) and the nights are cooler with temperatures around 8°C (48°F).

Sindh is one of the warmer Provinces of Pakistan and Mohenjo Daro has gone on record to having the highest temperature in all of Pakistan in 2010. As interesting as the destination is, it is not the best idea to visit in summer. For favorable weather, the winter months are pleasant and bearable for extended hours of travelling under the sun. 3. Cholistan Desert, Bhawalpur, Punjab

Cholistan Desert

The Cholistan Desert is located nearly 30 kilometers away from the city of Bahawalpur in Southern Punjab. It is a portion of the great Thar Desert , Pakistan’s largest desert, which extends over Sindh and even across the border to Rajasthan, India.

Long ago, Cholistan was a fertile area with a great river fed by water melted from the Himalayas . It still has the roots of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization settlements from as early as 4000 BCE. This region was later recognized as a caravan trade center. Numerous forts have been constructed under the leadership of these early settlers to care for their trade routes. One grandiose example is the Derawar Fort.

The desert is not commonly recognized as a winter vacation spot, however for those who like a little history, culture and a break from the snow, this remarkable desert is a site in Pakistan worth your time.

While in the Desert, the most favorite tourist attractions would have to be the 9th century Derawar Fort, Channan Pir shrines, and Dodhla Forest.

The Derawar Fort , the most iconic landmark, was the home to Bahawalpur’s Nawab in the past. Forty circular fortifications that are thirty feet tall create a protective exterior boundary. The Abbasi Mosque is only a walking distance from the fort and is an exact replica of the Moti Masjid in the Red Fort of Delhi. The structure was made in 1849, completely of white marble.

Positioned in between the Derawar and Din Garh forts is a tiny village of Chanan Pir that was named after Sufi who is buried there. This monument who holds value for both Muslims and Hindus.

Cholistan is not compromised solely of an arid desert, a lesser known wonder is the Dodhla Forest . This forest is among the few rare and protected Pakistani rainforests, rich flora and fauna.

You can book a Desert Safari with camel rides and everything for an unforgettable experience and visit the traditionally adorned bazaar for intricate handicrafts.

If you plan to visit the desert in February, you should incorporate the annual Jeep rally into your plans. In Pakistan this desert rally is equivalent to the biggest event for motor sport enthusiasts.

As it is a desert, temperatures at nights are drastically low going so far as to reach 0°C (32°F), however you can expect to find a warm winter sun during the afternoon.

Stargazing and exploring old monuments which were historically important is a fun way to spend a week off from your usual winter routine. You can arrange a bonfire and camping night through various tourism agencies for fitting outdoor adventure. However, you can find many major hotels and restaurants in Bahawalpur.

4. Ziarat, Quetta, Balochistan

Ziarat

Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, is Pakistan’s only major city at a high-altitude with an elevation of almost 1,680 meters (5,510 feet). It is rich in fruit orchards and that is why it is also known as the “ Fruit Garden of Pakistan ”. Some of the trees have been calculated to range approximately 5000 to 7000 years in age.

Ziarat Residency is also known as Quaid-e- Azam Residency as he spent the final days of his life here during his illness with Fatima Jinnah. This perfectly preserved homage to our nation’s founder is the city’s most celebrated and well-known landmark. The house reflects his character in itself and holds patriotic value to the inhabitants that dwell nearby.

Another place only 6 kilometers from Ziarat is Prospect Point which shows the Koshki valley lying below. Though there is a proper uphill road, it is recommended to walk where you will reach a leveled Prospect Point. You can view the highest peak here, Khilafat , from a nearby cliff standing at 3,487 meters (11,440 feet). According to the locals, the beauty of a snow-covered Ziarat is incomparable to any view in the summer making it a must-visit for the winter.

Expect to see snow in the winter months, with temperatures at 10°C by December. January is the coldest with its average lowest temperature being -3.4°C (25.9°F).

PTDC has constructed huts, lodges, and motels that can be booked in advance so that you can have a quiet visit away from the bustle of the city. Besides that, a few local hotels are also available in the heart of the city that can be found to be complete with modern-day amenities.

Country prepared to welcome tourists with certain COVID-19 restrictions in place

Islamabad: Pakistan’s scenic north has long been a favourite destination for mountaineers from across the world in all seasons but the country is now looking to establish itself as a winter tourism destination.

Winter sports and cultural festivals are being organized annually in the snow-covered valleys of Pakistan to promote adventure and winter tourism and attract domestic and international tourists. Pakistan is prepared to welcome tourists to popular winter destinations with certain coronavirus restrictions this year. The visitors must carry a physical or digital proof of vaccination as the new variants of the virus are still posing concerns.

Winter destinations

Pakistan is famous for its hospitality, exquisite cuisines, historical sites, and most importantly its majestic mountains. Pakistan is home to five peaks with altitudes of over 8,000 metres, including K2, the world’s second-highest mountain.

The government is gradually investing in facilities and infrastructure to offer more attractions for sightseers, skiers, trekkers and mountaineers by organizing adventurous sports as well as cultural festivities. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has also resumed its air safari flight and the flight to Skardu is known as “the most scenic and exciting flight” with stunning views of the world’s highest mountains.

1. Hunza and Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan

Spread over 72,400 sq km, Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region is where the three mightiest mountain ranges, Himalayas, Karakorams and Hindu Kush, meet. The scenic valleys Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu in the shadows of towering snow-clad peaks have attracted travellers for decades. Hunza valley offers exceptional views from lofty peaks to historic buildings to unique culture and heritage including the 1000-year-old Altit fort and 700-year-old Baltit fort.

The famous crystal clear Attabad Lake is also near Hunza. British mountaineer Eric Shipton called the Hunza valley “the ultimate manifestation of mountain grandeur” with the iconic Rakaposhi mountain as the valley’s star attraction. The region offers splendid views of Pakistan’s loftiest peaks and unforgettable sunrises, according to visitors. Some of the winter sports attractions in Gilgit Baltistan include the snow marathon in Khunjerab, ski traversing in Deosai, skiing in Naltar and Astore and ice hockey in Hunza.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is known for its diverse natural beauty and magnificent valleys including the Swat, Kaghan and Kumrat valleys. Swat Valley, with its green pine trees, snow-capped peaks and glistening lakes, is also known as the Switzerland of East.

Snow festivals with thrilling adventure activities are the key attractions for tourists in the Galiyat region.

4. Quetta and Ziarat in Balochistan

The deserts of Nushki and Kharan are among the most beautiful in the region. Ziarat Valley is the most popular tourist destination and home to the world’s second most extensive Juniper forest. The valley remains cool in summers and snow-covered in winters. Hanna Lake is another gorgeous place to visit near Quetta city which is covered in snow in winters. Hingol National Park in Balochistan is popular for its unique rock formations and numerous animal species.

5. Forts, deserts and beaches in Sindh

For those not fond of the snowy valleys, there are sandy deserts and incredible landscape stretches and green fields in central Pakistan and sparkling beaches and the Arabian Sea in the south. The province of Sindh is the home to the ancient city Moenjo Daro, a well-preserved relic of Indus Valley Civilisation, and several heritage sites and forts, as well as stunning beaches and the commercial hub city of Karachi. Winter is the best time to explore the culture in interior Sindh where temperatures in summers range between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius. The forts of RaniKot, Umerkot and Kot Diji reveal the grandeur of Sindh and are reminiscent of the ancient times when Pakistan was the cradle of civilizations.

6. Mughal era monuments, culture and heritage sites in Punjab

The Punjab province is home to many heritage and cultural sites and comprises rich agricultural lands, an extensive network of rivers and channels, shrines, and Mughal-era forts and gardens. The rich culture of the walled city of Lahore, sacred shrines in Multan, glorious palaces in Bahawalpur and Derawar Fort in the Cholistan Desert are some of the most attractive tourist destinations.

After the Murree tragedy, the police has strictly asked tourists to come fully prepared by storing extra fuel, charged batteries, tow and snow chains, and be extra careful while snapping selfies and check the weather conditions before travelling. Meanwhile, the visitors have urged authorities to improve food and lodging standards, keep a check on the local tourism industry and ensure sustainable tourism by introducing littering fines and proper waste management and recycling facilities.

The Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan comprises 72,400 square kilometers and is home to three of the world’s most formidable mountain ranges: the Himalayas, the Karakoram, and the Hindu Kush. For decades, travelers have been drawn to the picturesque valleys of Gilgit, Hunza, and Skardu, which are shaded by towering snow-capped hills.

Hunza Valley has a diverse landscape that includes peaks, historic buildings, and a rich culture and heritage, such as the 1,000-year-old Atilt Fort and the 700-year-old Baltit Fort.

Rakaposhi Base Camp

The climb to Rakaposhi Base Camp is one of the most picturesque in Gilgit-Baltistan for winter tourism. Moreover, it is an easy walk from the proper village of Minapin. For experienced trekkers, it is a day hike to go and come back the same day. Doubtlessly, this is one of the most tourists visiting in Pakistan. It is located in the famous Hunza Valley. Above all, access is very easy for both organized and self-organized visitors.

The hike’s charm enhances the fact that you don’t get to glimpse Rakaposhi’s peak until the very end. You won’t be able to see the last scene until you reach the summit.

It replicates the sensation of walking, including glacier crossing.

Naltar Valley for winter activities

If you want to glimpse paradise, you must go to Naltar Valley at least once.

During the winter, Naltar Valley transforms into a skiing paradise.

The Naltar Valley is made up of three stunning lakes known as the Bashkiri Lakes. The lakes in Naltar Valley are not exceptionally enormous, yet they are breathtakingly lovely.

The ‘Ski Federation of Pakistan’ has built a chairlift for tourists to have a continuous skiing experience.

Naltar is worth seeing for its snow-capped hills, scenery, lakes, numerous hikes within the valley, and vast forests.

Skardu Shangrila Resort

The moniker ‘Heaven on Earth’ should leave no question about what this Gilgiti destination has to offer. Wiki Loves Earth, a global contest held in 2015, was also won by the region. It is a veritable feast of beauty, nature, and tranquility. The Shangrila Resort (“paradise on earth”) provides honeymoon, conference, and family packages.

Murree Heights

This high station is very popular among locals. The scenery is breathtaking, with highlights including Nathia Gali, Mall Road, Mushkpuri Hill, and Ghora Gali. There are several hotels and resorts in various price ranges, so don’t worry about breaking the bank to visit Murree!

Chitral, Kalash Valley

If you enjoy meeting and mingling with individuals from other cultures, this is a must-see. Chitral is home to the Valley, which is encircled by the Hindu Kush mountain range. The natives have a distinct perspective on culture, language, and religion, the latter of which is based on ancient Hinduism.

Swat Valley, Murree Galiyat, and Kumrat in KPK are among the winter destinations in 2022.

The Swat, Kagan, and Kumrat valleys are among the most beautiful in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Swart Valley is especially well-known in eastern Switzerland for its lush green pine forests, snow-capped hills, and glistening lakes.

For its spectacular valley scenery, wooded mountains, and waterfalls, the secluded Kumrat Valley is renowned as the “Hidden Gem of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.” The Galiyat district, which encompasses Nathiagali, Donga Gali, Changla Gali, and Ayubia, is another region worth visiting in KP. The Ice Festival, with its thrilling experiences, is a key draw for diaspora travelers.

  • Lake Lulusar
  • The White House (Marghazar)
  • Valley of Kumrat

Malam Jabba, a picturesque hill station in Pakistan’s Hindu Kush Mountain range, is also one of the greatest locations to visit in winter. It is around 50 kilometers from Swat Valley’s main city of Saidu Sharif. Furthermore, Malam Jabba also has one of Pakistan’s most prominent ski resorts. The mesmerizing vacation destination attracts a great number of domestic and international travelers, with the number of visitors rising every year.

The Malam Jabba Ski Resort is an amazing winter tourism attraction

The Malam Jabba Ski Resort owns the Pakistani Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), which includes an 800-meter ski slope. In addition, it is well recognized for its greatest peak slope, which is approximately 9,000 feet above sea level. Its chairlifts, provide a spectacular perspective of the snow-covered valley. During the winter months, they are also a popular tourist destination in Pakistan. In addition to chairlifts and skiing platforms, the attractive resort has ice skating rinks and other modern amenities.

For those who like hiking, there are fantastic routes could choose for walking and hiking. The most interesting ones begin approximately 18 kilometers from the ski resort and pass over Shangla Top. And the other one begins around 17 kilometers from the resort and runs through Sabonev Valley. Both of the hikes offer exciting views and landscapes during the winter.

Apart from these, Malam Jabba is open all year, and there are plenty of decent hotels and restaurants nearby. Because of the surge of tourists in recent years, one may readily locate municipal amenities and services in the region. The best is, that thousands of people get employment in the tourism sector.

Archaeological, cultural, and heritage sites are the best Winter tourism attractions

Punjab includes various historical and cultural attractions, as well as fertile agricultural terrain and a vast network of Mughal-era Rivers, canals, temples, forts, and gardens. It is a religious and cultural melting pot, with Sufi shrines, Sikh Buddhist monasteries, Gurdwaras, and Hindu temples scattered throughout the province. The rich culture of Lahore’s walled city, Multan’s sacred sites, Bahawalpur’s majestic palaces, and the Drava Fort in the Jolistan Desert are among the most appealing tourist locations.

Punjab, Qila Rohtas

This medieval fort is located in Punjab, near the city of Jhelum. The edifice took eight years to build and was erected under the reign of Sher Shah Suri. It has twelve entrances. Aside from the Fort, must-sees are the Royal Mosque (with exquisite decorations and Islamic poetry), Haveli Man Singh, Rani Mahal, and Phansi Ghat. There are other motels and eateries nearby.

Raj Kathas Temple is the best winter tourism attraction

The Katha’s hamlet in Chakwal, Punjab, has much more to offer than its enigmatic name. For many years, the hamlet has been carrying a legacy, among which Kathas Raj Temple is one of the most exquisite wonders that catches the attention of those who appreciate and praise beauty.

Mohenjo Daro Sindh is the best winter tourism attraction

The discovery of this ancient Indus Valley Civilization astonished many people. The words ‘Mohenjo Daro’ literally mean’mound of the dead’ and are located in Larkana, Sindh. The arid area cries out to the blue in all of our spirits despite the lack of flora. Prepare to take out your camera and capture how appealing solitude may be.

Mosque of Tooba

Built-in 1969, the majestic Tooba Mosque has drawn both local and foreign visitors to Phase II of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) in Karachi. Because it is built on a single large dome, the wonder is also known as “Gol Masjid.” The mosque is also claimed to be the world’s largest single-dome mosque.

How to reach the stunning places to visit in the winter season?

The four-lane Islamabad-Murree Expressway takes around an hour and a half to go from Islamabad to Murree. If you take the ancient Islamabad-Murree Road, which is slightly more picturesque, you’ll get there in around two hours, depending on traffic.

The BEST Time to Visit Pakistan: Month-by-Month Comparison

So let me guess: you’re planning an epic trip but are now left wondering when IS the best time to visit Pakistan ?

Well first off–congrats! Visiting Pakistan is an adventure like no other.

The people and landscapes are unmatched, and every single province and territory has something special to offer.

While I know you were hoping for a basic and straightforward answer on when to come, the reality is that there isn’t one. Pakistan is a large country with diverse landscapes and climates.

The best time to visit Sindh in the south is absolutely NOT the best time to visit Hunza Valley in the north. You’ll also find dozens upon dozens of microclimates, especially once you get into the mountains.

Even so, there definitely is a “best” time to travel to each region, and certainly, some months that should be avoided altogether.

I live in Pakistan , and have now traveled to every province and territory in the country, experiencing all four seasons along the way! (Yes, parts of Pakistan do in fact have four seasons.) My long-term experience in the country has shaped this guide, which gives a season-by-season AND a month-by-month breakdown of Pakistan’s weather.

Hopefully, by the end, you’ll know exactly when you should plan your trip based on your interests!

After more than 2.5 years living in Hunza, I now run women’s tours to the valley that are committed to supporting local communities.

Understanding the Climate in Pakistan

When planning your Pakistan itinerary , always keep in mind that you will have to consider very different climates.

With such varied landscapes–from some of the highest mountains on Earth in Gilgit Baltistan to the deserts of Sindh–we absolutely need to break this down by province/territory.

girl standing with snowcapped mountain in the background

But first: there is one universal month that might be the worst time to visit Pakistan, and that’s August. Monsoon rains affect the entire country, and have proven to be catastrophic in 2022.

If you take away one thing about Pakistan’s climate, remember that August=monsoon !

Home to the largest amount of glaciers outside the polar regions, Pakistan’s Gilgit Baltistan territory has an arid climate–most towns and villages sit at over 8,000 feet (2200 m).

Certain regions are wetter or colder than others, but for the most part, the entire region sees all four seasons. The fall foliage that can be found in October-November is particularly incredible.

It’s difficult to fully classify the climate of KPK. The province has many microclimates ranging from subtropical to mountainous and dry just like Gilgit Baltistan.

Places in Peshawar will be extremely hot and almost unbearable in the summer, while the best time to visit Chitral, which has four seasons, is the summer.

Like KPK, Punjab doesn’t have a uniform climate but it’s certainly not as varied. Punjab experiences extremely hot and humid temperatures from April-September, with many days that exceed 110 degrees .

I highly recommend you do not visit for more than a day or two during this time. A short winter typically grips the region for 2-3 months, where temperatures can get below 40 degrees.

Sindh is the hottest place in Pakistan, and is located in a subtropical region . Most places in Sindh (aside from Karachi which benefits from the Arabian Sea) are over 100 degrees for the entire summer.

Winters remain pleasant with temperatures Westerners would consider “summer weather.”

Azad Kashmir is a territory of Pakistan that borders Punjab, KPK, and Gilgit Baltistan. As such it also has a varied climate , with places like Neelum Valley having weather similar to Gilgit Baltistan while other areas mimic Punjab’s climate.

Azad Kashmir is difficult for foreigners to travel in unless they hold some type of Pakistani ID card.

Balochistan is absolutely massive, and its weather patterns vary, though most of the province can be described as “ extremely hot .”

The Makran Coastal region is notably milder and is extremely pleasant to visit from January-April. Meanwhile, mountainous areas around Quetta receive snow and remain very cold during these months.

Balochistan is often brought up when discussing Pakistan’s safety , but foreigners cannot visit without security anyways.

Temperatures in Pakistan

The table below shows average temperatures in all of the parts of Pakistan that travelers typically go to.

Does it snow in Pakistan?

Yes! While you might be thinking Pakistan is a hot country, that’s only true for some areas.

Many regions of Pakistan experience snow each winter, which lasts from around December-March , the same as in other countries in the Northern Hemisphere.

does it snow in pakistan

Places in Pakistan that receive snow are situated at higher elevations. Surprisingly, you don’t need to head all the way up to Gilgit Baltistan to see it either.

There are multiple places within 3 hours of the capital Islamabad that receive snow.

To experience the best of the winter season in Pakistan, head to:

  • Swat Valley
  • Nathia Gali
  • Gilgit Baltistan
  • Upper Chitral

Seasons in Pakistan

While only a few places in Pakistan have four distinct seasons, every part of the country has seasonal fluctuations.

Here’s a breakdown of Pakistan seasons and where to travel during them:

Summer in Pakistan: High Season in the North (June-September)

A trekker’s paradise

girl trekking on a ridge during summer in pakistan

As the climate in Pakistan is so varied, summer means very different things depending on the region you’re talking about. In the mountainous north, it’s arguably the best time of the year. You’ll find plenty of sunshine, and tourism will be in full swing in places like Hunza Valley and Skardu.

Do keep in mind that June and July are peak times for domestic tourism in Pakistan, which leads to massive amounts of commercial travel. It’s still a beautiful time in the region, and getting off the well-beaten tourist trail is not hard.

Prices in hotels will typically be the highest at this time as well, though things change significantly in September when schools reopen.

Summer is prime time for trekking in the mountains of Pakistan , with hundreds if not thousands of options in KPK and Gilgit Baltistan.

the best time to vist pakistan

These mountainous regions are very cold and lack indoor heating, for the most part, so not only is summer the best time to visit Gilgit Baltistan , Chitral , and Swat Valley , but it’s really the only time to visit if you want to see the mountains at their best.

In South Pakistan (including parts of southern KPK), summer is the absolute worst time of the year. Temperatures regularly exceed 100 F, and the beaches of Sindh and Balochistan become too dangerous to swim in.

If you’re primarily interested in South Pakistan’s historical sites , avoid planning your trip in the summer.

Autumn in Pakistan: Shoulder Season (October-November)

Nature on fire

best places in pakistan to visit in winter

Fall is undoubtedly one of the best seasons in Pakistan . The weather is bearable even in Sindh, and it’s when you’ll finally be able to enjoy the cities–such as the many places to visit in Lahore –without feeling like you’re going to pass out.

While it might be too cold for some of the best treks, Autumn is the best time to visit Pakistan if the thought of incredible fall colors interests you.

best places in pakistan to visit in winter

Virtually all of Gilgit Baltistan becomes an array of orange, yellow and red, with the incredible Hunza Valley and many districts of Skardu being the best places to experience them.

That being said, you can also see some epic foliage in both Phander (Ghizer District of GB) and Upper Chitral.

Winter in Pakistan: High Season in the South (December-February)

It’s All About the South

drone shot of balochistan beach best time to visit pakistan

As beautiful as it is, the winter season in Pakistan is an absolutely frigid time to head to the mountains. Most hotels and homes don’t have heating, and electricity is minimal.

On the flip side, these are the months of absolutely PERFECT weather throughout Southern Pakistan . It’s during this time that you can swim in Karachi’s beaches and attend local festivals in complete climate comfort.

Rain is rare , and most days bring low levels of humidity. I spent the winter of 2021/2022 traveling around Sindh, and it couldn’t have been better.

While Sindh will give you sub-tropical vibes during a traditionally freezing season, winter weather in Punjab and southern KPK is significantly colder. You’re definitely going to want to travel with a jacket!

Spring in Pakistan: Shoulder Season (March-May)

Flowers, flowers and more flowers

full bloom apricot blossoms on a sunny day in hunza valley pakistan

Spring in Pakistan is all about one thing: blossom season !

From mid-March to mid-April, the Northern Areas become awash with cherry, apricot, and apple blossoms that blanket the valleys in light pink and white hues.

The apricots in particular are an important part of Hunza Valley cuisine – and the valley might be one of the best places to experience this short but magical season.

Though Pakistan is one of the cheapest countries in Asia generally, prices are even more favorable during shoulder seasons.

March and April in the mountains see many warm sunny days , though rain is more frequent, especially in April. As for May, the weather is less predictable, but usually will allow you to head out on some actual treks. Though keep in mind, even popular beginner treks like

Rakaposhi Basecamp seldom becomes clear until early June.

While March is still a decent time to explore Sindh, Punjab and Lower KPK know that you should try to head north before April. Though technically still spring, April and May are often the hottest months of the year for most of the country.

When is The Best Month to Visit Pakistan?

Now that we’ve delved into Pakistan’s climate, let’s talk months.

After spending well over a year in Pakistan and experiencing many of its climates, the reality is that there isn’t a single month that stands out as the best month to travel to PK.

The best month will depend a lot on what you want to see and do while in the country, so here’s a month-by-month breakdown to help you decide when to plan your trip for, including original photos that were actually taken in each month!

January in Pakistan

January is typically the coldest month of the year all throughout Pakistan. Even in Karachi, you won’t find temperatures exceeding 80 F, and a light jacket is a good idea everywhere.

Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic month to explore everything Punjab and Sindh have to offer with consistent pleasant weather and minimal humidity. If you’re looking to put your travel camera to use in urban centers, THIS is the time to do it!

burns road in karachi months in pakistan

January in Lahore is particularly unfavorable for exploring, as crop burning season makes the city’s air borderline unbreathable, plus it’s COLD. Islamabad typically hovers in the low 60s in January, making it a great time to travel to the city.

Unless you particularly want to see snow in Pakistan, January is one of the worst months of the year to visit any of the country’s mountainous regions. While roads usually remain open, almost all hotels and homes lack central heating.

February in Pakistan

February is a bit warmer than January in Southern Pakistan, and is one of the best months of the year to enjoy Pakistan’s beaches.

sunset in balochistan pakistan

Major cities like Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar will have warmed up a bit, but will still be comfortable to walk around in. It’s one of the only months you can check out all of the best restaurants in Lahore without needing an AC break.

While winter will still have a firm grip on Northern Pakistan, you can find several local festivals taking place down south, like the Cholistan Jeep Rally .

March in Pakistan

A transition time for the country, March brings spring to frigid Gilgit Baltistan, and with it millions of spring flowers. Blossom season typically begins around March 15th, with many trees bearing apricots, an essential Hunza Valley food .

While the beginning of March trends along “pleasant summer temperatures” in Pakistan’s major cities, blazing days in the 30s begin to make a resurgence as March moves along.

sehwan cityscape at sunset in march

March 23rd is an annual national celebration known as Pakistan Day, which marks the day the idea of Pakistan as a separate state came about.

You can also find numerous Sufi Urs festivals taking place at this time, particularly in Sindh and Punjab.

April in Pakistan

April marks a turn in Pakistan’s weather – the northern mountainous areas finally begin to thaw, while the entirety of Punjab and Sindh start to bake.

Until the middle of the month, many valleys in Gilgit Baltistan and Upper Chitral will still be filled with blossoms.

And trust me, they’re worth planning a trip around! Hunza Valley’s sights seem just a bit more magical when blanketed in flowers.

best places in pakistan to visit in winter

Rain is common during April in the Northern Areas, but you can also experience the warmest and sunniest of days. Most treks and high-altitude road passes (like Babusar) will still be closed for general use.

The beginning of April should mark the end of any time spent in Southern Pakistan – temperatures settle in the high 90s and only go up from there.

May in Pakistan

Ahh May, the official beginning of Pakistan’s trekking season, and it’s overall a glorious time to start any Pakistan trip. Most schools are still in session, so you’ll be able to enjoy the mountains before the commercial trips fully begin.

patundas trek in pakistan best time to visit pakistan

Temperatures in Northern Pakistan are typically sunny and around 70 degrees, though warmer or cooler days may occur. By the end of May, all motorable roads should be accessible, including the Babusar , Shandur , and Khunjerab Passes .

For the south, May usually means extreme and often record-breaking temperatures and heat waves. I had to spend a few days in Islamabad in May 2022, and it was literally 109 degrees.

In short, summer travel in Pakistan is all about the north’s incredible natural landmarks .

June in Pakistan

As far as tourism goes, June is one of the busiest months of the year for Northern Pakistan.

Temperatures are well within the “summer” range, and the hiking and climbing season will have fully kicked off. Though many popular tourist destinations will be packed, it’s very easy to beat the crowds.

traffic while travelign best time to visit pakistan

For example, June is perhaps the worst time of year to visit the ever-famous Fairy Meadows, but a perfect time to explore the raw and authentic Chapursan Valley .

The weather in mainland Pakistan’s cities will be truly unbearable throughout June. As the monsoon begins this month too, Karachi and other parts of Sindh and Balochistan have been known to experience severe rain and flooding.

July in Pakistan

July is the hottest month of the year in north Pakistan, with temperatures regularly exceeding 80 degrees.

july is the best time to visit gilgit baltitsan pakistan

Many popular treks like the Shimshal Pass in Shimshal Valley and K2 Basecamp have their peak weather windows in July, and wildflowers are a common sight in almost any meadow.

Camping will be at its most comfortable, and while still common, rain is less frequent in much of the Northern Areas.

August in Pakistan

Visiting Pakistan in August is unfortunately taking a gamble. The monsoon season finally reaches the Northern Areas, and can cause intense flooding and devastation. Rain in Pakistan is absolutely NO joke.

In August 2022, record-breaking monsoon rain in combination with melting glaciers wreaked havoc on the country . More than 33 million were displaced and many were killed. This effect was felt in EVERY province and territory, from Sindh to Gilgit Baltistan in varying degrees.

best places in pakistan to visit in winter

This doesn’t mean this will happen every year, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind when planning your Pakistan trip.

Aside from the monsoon, Pakistan’s cities will still be baking at around 40 C throughout August, as I experienced firsthand in 2019 when I spent the month in Lahore (rookie mistake).

When it’s not raining, temperatures will be pleasant and warm throughout August up North. You’ll also find Independence Day celebrated all throughout the country on August 14th .

September in Pakistan

Surprisingly, September just might be the best month to visit Northern Pakistan. Domestic commercial tourism slows significantly, and the vast majority of days are still warm and sunny.

September is also the last month to comfortably trek in the mountains, though nights will start to progressively get cooler as October approaches. Still, you can definitely get some solid high-altitude use out of your hiking backpack throughout the month!

best places in pakistan to visit in winter

Personally, the Septembers that I’ve spent traveling Pakistan have without question provided the most consistent sunny days. Towards the end of the month, you’ll be able to see some magical fall colors in Upper Hunza, parts of Skardu, and Upper Chitral.

September is still not a great time to explore the south-days still often exceed 100 degrees-though by the end of the month temperatures will get a bit comfier.

October in Pakistan

If you love fall colors, then the best time to visit Pakistan is definitely in October. While it might be a bit chilly, the incredible foliage to be found all over Gilgit Baltistan is worth wearing an extra jacket for!

Nearly the entire GB territory experiences foliage in some shape or form, though I’m a bit partial to the magical regions of Central Hunza and Nagar.

You can also find incredible colors all over Skardu as well as in Phander, a bucolic village in the Ghizer District.

girl standing in sunset light with colored trees behind pakistan itinerary

October is also when you’ll find Pakistan’s major cities (Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi) finally become enjoyable from a temperature perspective, though the end of the month will be notably cooler than the beginning.

The Babusar Pass which is the best road connecting Gilgit Baltistan with the rest of Pakistan tends to close by mid-October. The longer Karakoram Highway route remains open for traffic year-round.

November in Pakistan

Foliage will be on display until roughly November 15th all throughout the northern areas, and temperatures will drop with the leaves.

Temperatures regularly approach 0 degrees F at this time of year, though rest assured that plenty of extra winter gear is sold in local shops.

parade in walled city places to visit in lahore pakistan eid milad un nabi

Meanwhile, November is one of the best months of the year to visit South Pakistan. From Karachi to Peshawar, temperatures will be extremely pleasant and may even get a bit chilly at night as the month moves along.

December in Pakistan

December is one of the coolest months in Pakistan overall, but that just means it’s finally enjoyable in most of the country’s Southern areas.

December is a fantastic time to explore Karachi, though you might even find it a bit chilly if you want to swim!

Islamabad and Peshawar will be around 40-65 degrees during this month, as will Lahore.

best places in pakistan to visit in winter

However, December is the WORST time to travel to Lahore as the entire city becomes choked with smog. Lahore is typically polluted but December is known as “ burning season ” when crops all over Punjab burn their harvested fields.

This typically puts pollution levels into an extremely hazardous zone – i.e API levels of 400-500 when 20-40 is optimal for health.

The Northern Areas will be extremely cold in December, and the vast, vast majority of hotels and homes do not have central indoor heating.

FAQs About the Best Time to Travel to Pakistan

A few questions people tend to ask about the best time to go to Pakistan:

When is the best time to visit C hitral?

The best time to visit Chitral is virtually identical to the best time to visit Gilgit Baltistan. Though keep in mind that Chitral City and the Kalash Valleys will be noticeably warmer than the Upper Chitral district.

When is the best time to visit L ahore?

December and early-mid January are terrible times to visit due to crop burning season–it’s then that the entire city becomes engulfed in thick smoke and reaches terrifying levels of pollution.

The Best Time to Visit Pakistan: Final Thoughts!

I hope you now have a better idea on when the best time to travel to Pakistan is! As I said earlier, the country’s complex climate can be summed up with: the summer is for the north and the winter is for the south!

So if you’re a mountain lover , plan your Pakistan trip between May-September (keeping in mind the August monsoon). And if you want to traipse around Pakistan’s historical sites in warm, humidity-free air? Book your tickets sometime between November-March .

Hello Samantha, I was revisiting a term paper I wrote in 1974 on the Hunzas for a nutrition class at University of California Davis, became curious to look up the current status of the area (health, diet, politics, lifestyle, etc) and I happened to see an article that referred to you and I am contemplating your October trip! I have been to India a few times and trekked in Ladakh 30 years ago. I live in Michigan. Just wanted to introduce myself :)

Hi Coco! I’m super late here but I’m so thrilled to hear this, that’s amazing you were reading and researching about Hunza back then! Feel free to reach me on email or any other platform to talk about future trips, would love to have you!

6 Places You Should Explore in Winters

The following are the top places you should add to your bucket list for your next winter break:

Murree is one of the most popular hill stations in the country. This city also happens to be one of the oldest tourist attractions as well. So, it had to be on top of the list. The ease of accessibility to this hill station contributes significantly to its popularity. If you live near Islamabad or Rawalpindi, you can make a trip and return on the same day since it's only around 65 kilometers away from Islamabad. In other words, the drive won’t take you longer than one and a half hours. So, making the trip is quite budget-friendly.

Not just the people from the twin cities visit Murree, but people from all over Pakistan visit this place. Sometimes you can even spot foreigners in Murree casually strolling on Mall Road. For a tourist attraction with all the amenities like major cities, it is no surprise that people visit Murree throughout the year. You will find many popular food and hotel chains in this city adding to the convenience of visitors.

During winter months, the temperature drops in Murree and the city gets covered under a layer of snow. But the temperature usually does not get too harsh and is on the milder side for the most part. This city in Pir Panjal Range has plenty of scenic views where you can take Instagrammable photos. The only thing that some tourists may not like about Murree is that it gets too crowded, especially during the Winter. For those looking for a peaceful escape close to nature, it may be better to take a trip to other places mentioned in this blog.

Nathia Gali

If you travel for almost two hours further via Abbottabad Road, you will reach Nathia Gali. It is another popular destination in Abbottabad district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This hill station is in close proximity to Murree but it is less crowded and fairly views. If you visit this place during summer, you can enjoy hiking. But during Winter, the temperature drops to minus eight degrees Celsius making it very very cold.

The views from Nathia Gali with its lush green meadows are breathtaking. From Nathia Gali, you can visit places nearby like Donga Gali, Ghora Gali, Jhika Gali, Samundar Katha Lake, and Namli Maira waterfall. Even if you plan on staying in Nathia Gali, there is plenty to explore like historic churches and Nathia Gali’s popular bazaar.

Swat Valley

Swat Valley is often called the “Switzerland of the East” and not without reason. The natural scenery, local culture, hospitable people, and serenity make it one of the best places to visit during Winter. Swat has plenty of places you can visit including Malam Jabba, Kalam, Miandam, Swat Museum, and Bahrain City.

Kalam is arguably one of the most beautiful places in the Swat Valley. It is 2000 meters above sea level. You will find lush green valleys and scenic Mahodand Lake and Kandol Lake. Also, Ushu Forest is worth setting out during your time at Swat. Plenty of hotels are in Kalam Valley where you can have a comfortable stay.

If you travel 50 kilometers from Swat Valley, you will reach Malam Jabba. This place is home to one of the biggest ski resorts in the area. So, if you are fond of skiing, you know where to go from Swat Valley. You can travel 6 more kilometers from Malam Jabba to reach a small resort called Miandam. This destination is full of views that will make you take out your camera. Plus, this location is very well-suited for hiking.

For those who are more fond of history than going downhill accelerating on their skis or the physical exercise of hiking, Swat Museum is a place to visit. You will find relics from civilizations that date back to 3,500 BC, truly fascinating. The museum has nine galleries where history is preserved and to be witnessed again.

Madyan and Bahrain are two other exciting tourist destinations in the Swat Valley. Madyan is 60 Km from Swat and is a beautiful place to visit. The Madyan waterfall is one of the key attractions in this city. At just 10 kilometers from Madyan, you can explore another city with breathtaking views called Bahrain, not to be confused with the country of Bahrain which has the same name.

Bahrain is named after the two rivers. The city is at the junction of the river Daral and Swat. You will hear the sound of fast-flowing rivers through the city. And the views will make you take out your camera.

Neelum Valley

Neelum Valley is one of the most popular destinations for honeymoons but that does not mean singles cannot experience its beauty. Only 20 kilometers from Muzaffarabad is Neelum Valley. If you visit the valley during summer, the temperature is pleasant. But during the winter season, the temperature drops to around 0 degrees. So, you better pack those extra sweaters and bomber jackets after you make all the other arrangements on your own or book a Neelum tour with Bookme .

The valley has lush green forests, beautiful lakes, multiple hill stations, and beautiful mountains in the backdrop. Make sure you have multiple days to explore the valley because every destination is unique and worth capturing with your camera. On your journey to Neelum Valley, you can explore Patheka where many hotels are located. You can trek through the forest under the shade of trees on both sides. Dhani waterfall is another place to visit only 30 kilometers from Muzaffarabad. So, there’s no reason for you to not visit this beautiful waterfall.

Lakes in Neelum Valley are some of the best one can find. You can visit Rati Gali Lake and Lake Banjosa. Rati Gali Lake is calm, peaceful, and beautiful to say the least. It is highly recommended to explore the picturesque beauty of this mass of water. Lake Banjosa is an artificial lake but is magnificent when it comes to the views it holds for tourists.

Kel and Arrang Kel are some other amazing places to visit in the Neelum Valley of Azad Jammu Kashmir. Like the whole of Neelum Valley, the views are breathtaking. Even though you can see the Nanga Parbat after a three-hour stroll to an excellent view.

The list of exciting destinations goes on but another place to explore is Sharda Valley. It is a walkable place and is highly recommended to experience. Another place worth visiting is Pir Chinasi. Named after Pir Sayed Hussain Shah Bukhari which is also a popular shrine at this location.

Plenty of other exciting places are in the Neelum valley which you can conveniently visit with Bookme tours.

If you are up for an adventure to explore the northern areas of Pakistan, Skardu is a place you should add to your bucket list. Skardu Valley is in the east of the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region and at an altitude of 2,230 above sea level. The city is situated right along the Indus and Shigar rivers. The best time to visit Skardu is from June to September. Another exciting thing about the city is that it is home to the second-highest peak in the world, K2. An easy way for you to set on a trip to Skardu is by booking a trip with Bookme.

You can either travel to Skardu by air or by road. For those who are more fond of reaching their destination fast, catching a plane is the best way forward. But for those who love road trips and relish every stop on the journey, hitting the road is a much better option.

The type of experience you get in Skardu depends on when you are traveling to the city. For example, if you go there in March, you will get to experience cherry blossoms with trees covered in pink. And if you travel there in the peak of winter, you will see everything covered in the blanket of snow.

When you are in Skardu, it is highly recommended to visit the Katpana desert. It is a cold desert. Yes, you have heard it right. This high-altitude desert has mild temperatures during the summer and has temperatures dropping to -17 degrees during winter. The sand dunes get covered in a layer of snow.

Apart from the cold desert, you can visit two forts in Skardu named Kharpocho Fort and Shigar Fort. You can live in Shigar Fort by booking rooms in Serena Shigar Fort. After spending time at the rocky forts, you can set out on the grassy lawns of Deosai National Park.

There are plenty of beautiful lakes in the vicinity of Skardu Valley. The list of lakes you can visit includes Upper Kachura Lake, Lower Kachura Lake, Satpara Lake, Basho Valley Lake, Katura Lake, and others. It is highly advisable to at least visit two or three of these lakes on your trip.

Why should anyone visit Hunza? Because it has one of the highest mountains, bluest lakes, and some of the most hospitable people. Every year, Hunza Valley attracts thousands of tourists both local and international. One of the chief attractions of the valley is Attabad Lake. But it gets frozen during the winter and is better experienced during the summer. However, when you book a tour to Hunza with Bookme , you can make the most out of your journey with all the exciting stops along the way.

With temperatures dropping to -30 degrees, many tourist attractions are inaccessible during the winter season. For example, you cannot visit the Chinese border during winter. Passu Cones and Passu Glacier are also not open to tourists during the winter season.

Hunza Valley has two historic forts called Altit Fort and Baltit Fort. Make sure to at least visit one of them. Other places you can see in Hunza are Ultar Sar and Lady Finger Peak. If you want to take a break from the mountains, you can take a stroll through Karimabad Bazar. You will find local handicrafts, embroidered caps, amazing shawls, and even semi-precious gemstones. In other words, it is the perfect place to get gifts to bring back from Hunza for your loved ones.

20 Most Beautiful Places in Pakistan – From Mountains to Mosques

It’s hard to imagine a more magnificent landscape than the rugged peaks, hidden villages and wind-swept plains of Pakistan. Here are 20 of the most beautiful places in Pakistan , from wild mountain passes and unreal lakes, to ornate mosques and ancient fortresses.

Thanks to Samantha for sharing her Pakistan tips. Samantha is a self-proclaimed South Asia addict and hippopotamus lover who’s been on the road for seven months so far. She blogs about her indefinite budget-backpacking adventure at Intentional Detours, where she shares guides and stories to help and inspire you to visit offbeat places, too.

Western media might try to tell you otherwise, but trust me – Pakistan is an absolutely stunning country. Think famous mountain peaks, emerald-green and turquoise-blue valleys, deserts filled with remnants of ancient civilization… And that’s not even the half of it.

One thing’s for sure: Pakistan sure isn’t lacking in beautiful places to visit!

Also read: 7 best Pakistani cultural experiences for travellers .

During the 4 months I spent in the country, I was constantly blown away by what I was seeing. There’s an endless number of perfect natural (and man-made) sights to see while backpacking Pakistan , so I thought I’d spotlight 20 of the very best for future travellers.

20 most beautiful places in Pakistan

Without further ado, here are the 20 most beautiful places in Pakistan (in no particular order), a country that quickly and fiercely stole my heart.

1. Swat Valley

A green mountain valley with a small village at the bottom.

Though it has had a rough past, the present and future of Swat Valley are shining very bright. This stunning valley in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan is something straight out of a fairy tale.

Think bright green fields and forests, picturesque villages, and rivers boasting shades of blue so clear and bright you wouldn’t have thought them real!

The true beauty of Swat can be found around the town of Kalam, which serves as a base to the explore the beauty of the valley. Here are 3 places you can’t miss in Swat Valley:

Boyun Village

Boyun, also known as Green Top, is a short drive or manageable up-hill walk from Kalam town. When you finally reached the pinnacle, you’ll be rewarded with a panorama of one of the most vast and beautiful villages I’ve ever seen – along with sweeping views of the valley below. Boyun is an easy day trip from Kalam.

A mountain stream runs through Pakistan's Swat Valley.

Kandol and Spindhor Lakes

These alpine lakes lie 2 hours away from Kalam. These days, Kandol Lake is accessible via jeep track and is a bit more commercialised, whereas Spindhor can only be reached on a 2-hour trek. Whichever you choose to visit, both are absolutely counted among the most beautiful places in Pakistan.

Ushu Forest

This well-preserved forest is full of deodar trees and is a fabulous place to get lost. The road that leads into the forest continues on to several villages set along the Kalam River.

2. Hunza Valley

A brilliant blue river runs through Pakistan's beautiful Hunza Valley.

If you live in Pakistan – or have read anything about the country – it’s almost certain you’ve come across the name Hunza. Don’t let the word ‘valley’ confuse you, though – Hunza is actually a massive district made up of numerous valleys and villages. One part of the ancient Silk Road , here are some of the most beautiful sights in Hunza:

Passu Cones

The Passu Cathedral is a natural work of art and one of the most recognisable scenes in Pakistan. Though staying overnight in Passu village is no longer allowed, the cones are visible from a ways away, starting from the village of Gulmit. The most iconic view of the Cathedral is from the Karakoram Highway, about an hour’s drive from Gilgit City.

The jagged peaks of a mountain range in Pakistan framed by trees in fall colours.

Attabad Lake

A lake that doesn’t look real… Even when you’re standing right in front of it. Attabad was born out of tragedy when a massive landslide occurred in 2010. The flow of the Hunza River was blocked, and the now-famous lake was created in its wake. Its bright-blue turquoise waters make the it one of the most beautiful places in Pakistan.

Eagle’s Nest

Want to see one of the most epic sunsets in the Hunza Valley? Head to Eagle’s Nest around golden hour! The name comes from an upscale hotel/restaurant nearby, but you can drive up to the viewpoint without going there.

3. Yarkhun Valley

A bare mountain landscape with green trees in a low valley.

Though it’s relatively unheard of and forgotten compared to Pakistan’s most famous tourist spots, I think Yarkhun Valley was the most beautiful place I visited in the country. Located in the Upper Chitral district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Yarkhun dazzles with its mountain ranges and untouched villages.

Reaching the valley, which stretches for many kilometres past the administrative town of Mastuj, requires a bit of effort if you don’t have your own vehicle. If you do have one though, the ride isn’t too bad – just prepare for mostly dirt roads!

The side valley of Gazin is most definitely worth a detour if you make it all the way to Yarkhun. Here, you can see the mountains of the Thoi Pass, a high-altitude pass that connects Upper Chitral with Yasin Valley in Gilgit Baltistan.

4. Phander Lake

A beautiful blue lake surrounded by fall foliage, one of the most beautiful places in Pakistan.

Phander Lake, located in Phander Village, is almost too good to be true. The teal-coloured lake sits silently amongst light-green trees befitting a landscape painting.

Despite being insanely beautiful, Phander Lake doesn’t see anywhere as close to the number of tourists as the more popular Attabad Lake does.

Mountains in Pakistan fringed by autumn trees.

During the 4 days I spent in Phander relaxing lakeside, I didn’t encounter any other tourists. If you do visit, I highly recommend you stay at the Lake Inn, which is a short walk away and charges 1,000 rupees per night.

There is also the expensive (5,000 rupees) PTDC that overlooks the lake, but the hospitality and value at Lake Inn reign superior.

It's hard to imagine a more magnificent landscape than the rugged peaks, hidden villages and wind-swept plains of Pakistan. Here are 20 of the most beautiful places in Pakistan, from wild mountain passes and unreal lakes, to ornate mosques and ancient fortresses. #Pakistan #Asia | Where to go in Pakistan | Pakistan travel | Photos of Pakistan

5. Broghil Valley

Located way up north very close to Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor, Broghil Valley was formerly only accessible via trek or horseback. These days, the once-hidden locale can be reached by a treacherous jeep track – yet it still only receives a handful of visitors during the few months it’s not frozen under heaps of snow.

Currently, whether or not foreigners are allowed to visit Broghil is iffy. (If you’re insistent, make sure you check with the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Chitral before making the trek up there.) But Pakistanis – please go see this beauty! The valley is home to numerous high-altitude lakes, yaks, and sprawling green pastures, all set against a dramatic mountainous backdrop that soars above 13,000 feet.

Moreover, a day’s trek from Lashkargaz, the last village in Broghil, will lead you to Karambar Lake, one of the highest in the world!

A mosque with ornate minarets in Lahore, Pakistan.

A city… Say what? Yes, Lahore may be a metro but its treasure trove of historical places surely makes it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Pakistan. Lahore was the city of Mughals, and so much of their creations still remain.

If you’re wondering what are the best places to visit in Lahore , hold tight because there’s a whole lot of them!

The most famous of the city’s monuments include the Badshahi Mosque, the Wazir Khan Mosque, and of course the Lahore Fort. Add to that dozens upon dozens of beautifully preserved tombs, lively shrines, and havelis upon havelis , and you have yourself the cultural capital of Pakistan.

7. Hingol National Park

A road leads through a mountain landscape by the sea in Hingol National Park, Pakistan.

Hingol National Park is technically in Pakistan, but it looks more like a Martian planet! The park is over 6,000-square-kilometres and contains incredibly unique rock formations, vast canyons, numerous animal species, and even a mud volcano .

What’s more, part of the National Park hugs the coast, adding the ocean to all its other assets. Though totally out-of-this-world in its looks, Hingol is only 3.5 hours from Karachi, Pakistan’s most populous city.

Pakistanis shouldn’t have any problem entering the park, but foreigners have had mixed experiences. Some who were accompanied by locals have been able to spend a night/ weekend in the park, while others were only given day permission. There is no public transport to the park, so having access to your own transportation is a must.

8. Kalash Valleys

Wooden houses cling to the side of a hill in Pakistan.

The Kalash Valleys, comprised of Bumboret, Rumbur, and Birir, are home to the Kalash people, a religious and ethnic minority in Pakistan with their own beliefs, culture and language. The valleys they live in are certainly some of the most beautiful places in Pakistan – not just for their natural splendour, but also for the beauty of the Kalash themselves.

The valley of Rumbur is particularly stunning. Here, kilometres of dusty road and mountains rumble alongside the Kalash River. The Kalash people live in wooden homes that cling to the high hills, and the women are particularly famous for their brightly-coloured traditional dress and headwear that differs from anything else one can find in Pakistan.

Being only 2.5 hours from Chitral City, it’s very easy to make it out to one of the valleys these days. If you do decide to head to Rumbur, take a day to trek all the way into the valley. The last settlement of Rumbur, Sheikhandeh, is a former Nuristani village whose inhabitants migrated across the border to Pakistan a few hundred years ago.

9. Deosai Plains National Park

A beautiful green river valley in Pakistan.

Deosai is often referred to as the roof of the world. And it kinda is. At 4,117 metres (13,497 feet), the massive plateau is the second-highest on the planet, and is only really accessible during summer.

Sprawling emerald-green meadows, snow-capped peaks and glistening blue lakes greet visitors who make the journey to this beautiful spot. The Himalayan Brown Bear calls Deosai its home and has been spotted by many a visitor – watch out for them if you’re camping!

The park charges an entrance fee of 1,000 rupees for foreigners and 40 rupees for Pakistanis.

10. Gorakh Hills

Hills in the desert… Yup, the Gorakh Hill Station is located in Sindh, but is certainly elevated as a part of the Kirthar Mountains. At 1,734 metres (5,689 feet), the top of the hills provide some of the most beautiful views in Southern Pakistan. This is the perfect spot for a weekend camping trip.

Gorakh Hills are about 8 hours from Karachi, but only 2 to 3 hours from the city of Dadu, making the latter a better place to start your journey. There is no public transport, but there are a few rest houses for anyone who isn’t looking to pitch a tent.

11. Shimshal

Shimshal Valley, a stunning mountain landscape in Pakistan.

Though a bit out of the way compared to some of the other beautiful tourist places in Pakistan featured on this list, Shimshal Valley is well worth the effort required to reach it. The locale is known for being a major adventure destination that’s particularly popular amongst climbers and mountaineers.

But Shimshal isn’t just one of the most beautiful places in Pakistan for adrenaline junkies. The village itself is divine come summer. Incredibly, it almost exclusively relies on solar energy! Easier short treks to nearby yak pastures can also be arranged, as can just simply wandering around and enjoying the epic vistas and fields of mustard-yellow flowers.

12. Shah Jahan Mosque

The richly decorated ceiling of a mosque, one of the most beautiful places in Pakistan.

Thought all the Mughal relics were in Punjab? Think again! The Shah Jahan Mosque – also known as the Jamia Masjid – is located in Thatta, a town in Pakistan’s Sindh province. It’s widely known for having the most elaborate display of tile work in all of South Asia. Blue and sandstone colours adorn the interior of the mosque and are sure to wow all who visit.

The mosque was commissioned by Shah Jahan when he sought refuge in Thatta back in 1647 and somehow remains in amazing shape today. Though Sindh might seem to be a far cry from the mountains, the immaculate artistry present here makes it one of the most beautiful tourist places in Pakistan.

13. Fairy Meadows

Snow-capped mountains reflected in a lake.

Though it has become a bit touristy (and pricey), Fairy Meadows is no doubt a stunner. The meadows offer an incredible view of Nanga Prabat, the world’s 9th highest mountain peak.

Reaching Fairy Meadows is a bit of a challenge. The journey starts with a jeep ride across one of the most dangerous roads in the world and culminates with a 5 kilometre trek. It’s possible to rent a campsite, or you can bring your own equipment to enjoy a night or two basking in one of Pakistan’s most epic views.

Currently, the price for a jeep into the meadows is around 8,000 rupees ($51), and walking the road is prohibited. Lucky it’s possible to split the cost with other travellers.

The Karakoram Highway winds its way through high peaks in Pakistan.

14. Chapursan Valley

Like Broghil, Chapursan Valley also borders Afghanistan’s Wakhan but is situated more to the east. This stunning collection of villages and vistas sees only a handful of tourists and is one of the most remote places you can visit in Hunza.

Chapursan is home to the Wakhi people, an ethnic group who speak Wakhi and belong to the Ismaili sect of Islam. With royal blue skies, massive mountain peaks, sprawling lakes and virtually no commercialisation, Chapursan Valley is as beautiful a place in Pakistan as they come!

To reach it, you’ll first need to head to the town of Sost that sits near the Pakistan-China Border. If you have your own vehicle, you’re all set to head on up from there. If not, shared jeeps leave from Sost each morning around 6am.

While in the valley, don’t miss the Baba Ghundi Shrine, a mystical Sufi shrine dedicated to a saint who supposedly held magical powers. Also don’t forget to enjoy the company of the yaks!

15. Khunjerab Pass

Snow-capped mountains and a small man-made structure at the Pakistan-China border crossing.

This high-mountain pass isn’t for the faint of heart. At nearly 4,600 metres (15,397 feet), this popular tourist attraction connects Pakistan with China to form the highest paved border crossing in the world.

Many people venture to the border to take photos at the official gate, which is surrounded by insanely tall peaks and grassy fields. As for transport, it’s best to travel here with your own vehicle as bus tickets can get pricey. For adventurous travellers, hitchhiking is also an option, as it is on much of the Karakoram Highway.

16. Rakaposhi Base Camp

Snow-capped mountains in Pakistan.

For all those trekking enthusiasts out there – this one’s for you! The Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek is doable in one day, even for beginners, and offers some truly insane views of Rakaposhi, a 7,800-metre peak!

There are few ways to get as up close and personal with Pakistan’s giants than this. The trek starts from the village of Minapin, where it should take those with a decent fitness level about 4 to 5 hours to reach the top.

Snow-capped purple mountains and a wide valley in Pakistan.

While it is possible to camp, the descent is much quicker, making the entire journey there and back a plausible one-day affair. Due to extreme weather, it’s only possible to do the trek between May and October.

17. Margala Hills

A red sky at dusk with a mosque visible in the valley.

Islamabad might be a glitzy ‘new’ city, but did you know it also has a vast array of hills perfect for climbing? The Margala Hills are spread out over over 12,000 hectares and contain multiple hiking and running trails.

Ascending to the various peaks of the range show off Islamabad in ways you might not have known were possible. There are few places in Pakistan that remain so close to the city yet so deeply connected to nature.

18. Rohtas Fort

An ancient stone fortress in Pakistan.

Say hello to another of the most beautiful places in Pakistan – this time a 16th-century fortress that’s recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rohtas Fort is located near Jhelum in Punjab, which is about 4 hours from Lahore and 2 hours from Islamabad.

The fortress is one of the largest in the Subcontinent and has remained in remarkable condition despite its age. Hours can be spent roaming around the massive structure, a beautiful relic that almost seems to transport visitors back in time.

It’s easy to get lost amongst the walls and gates for an entire day. Keep in mind that the fort charges an entrance fee of 500 rupees for foreigners and 20 rupees for Pakistanis.

19. Naltar Valley

A blue lake surrounded by colourful mountains in Pakistan's Naltar Valley.

Naltar Valley is about 54 kilometres (34 miles) from Gilgit City in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. The popular tourist attraction is known for its dramatic forests, a collection of crystal-clear lakes, and in the winter, skiing facilities.

Though many tourists just come for the slopes, I think the real magic of Naltar can only be witnessed in the summer months when the lakes unfreeze and the forests can be best enjoyed.

This magical valley is only accessible via Jeep, but public transport does exist from Gilgit. There are a number of hotels and guesthouses to accommodate tourists in the valley’s two villages. To avoid peak tourist season, steer clear of visiting during the month of May and try coming in fall instead. You might be lucky enough to catch some epic foliage towards the end of October.

20. Katpana Desert

Sand dunes and mountains in Pakistan.

Beautiful places in Pakistan truly cover every landscape imaginable… Including the Katpana Cold Desert. Though it has all the makings of a ‘warm’ desert, what makes the Katpana stand out is its altitude. It does, in fact, become covered with snow in the winter.

Said to be the highest cold desert in the world, sand dunes at this altitude look truly unique. Very few countries can lay claim to such a rarity. Travellers can reach the Katpana Desert easily from Skardu, as it’s only about 30 minutes away. Don’t count on there being public transport, though.

Most beautiful places in Pakistan: Final thoughts

Listing the 20 most beautiful places in Pakistan isn’t an easy task when almost everywhere you turn, the landscape is mesmerising in one way or another. Though this is only a small sample of what Pakistan has to offer, I strongly recommend trying to visit at least a few of these highlights.

I absolutely loved every minute of the 4 months I spent travelling through Pakistan. But in a country this big and beautiful, I know there’s always more to discover. Happy adventuring!

Nice info and I have visited 7 places from them but I try to visit physically all . Such a great contribution. Like it and appreciate you.

Minar-e-Pakistan is equivalent to nationalism and patriotism in Pakistan. It is the national monument, located at the center of Lahore. The tower was built between 1960 and 1968 on the site where the All-India Muslim League passed the Lahore Resolution on 23 March 1940.

Very interesting article

Great list but you missed many many beautiful places in Pakistan. Our country has a lot of natural beauty.

Hi Emily, Thanks for ur article, it was an excellent effort. Yes there can be hundreds of wonderful sites in Pakistan but u filtered very well. Since I’m an admirer of GB beauty of Pakistan n visits a lot, probably its a typo saying Rakaposhi @ 7800 feet (actually it’s 7800 mtrs) but to me this small error impacts the uniqueness of this Majestic beauty of the world. Rakaposhi is the TALLEST free standing mountain in the world, almost 20000 feet (6000 mtrs) from base to top, few people also misunderstand this record with Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which is about 16000 feet (4800 mtrs) from base to top. Rakaposhi is not only the tallest but the steepest climb in the world, whee u can see its summit while standing on the road at the bottom.

Shall strongly suggest to keep writing n keep visiting Pakistan.

Thanks n regards,

Thanks Nadeem for all the tips!

HI Emily thanks for your blog it is quite helpful and gives me idea to planned by visit being a pakistani i never visit northern areas of pakistan but i am planning to go on dec 2020 and i feel mountains areas will be fully covered by white sheet (full of snow) i hope my tour will be amazing INSHALLAH.

I’m so glad to hear that! Happy travels!

Dear all, Seeing is believing. But how about visa to travel to Pakistan. I am not sure if visas are issued to Pakistan by Pakistan embassy here in India currently. Please do elaborate. Thanks again…

Pakistan has opened E visa and and on Arrival tourist Visa for majority nationalities around the world. That’s why number of international tourists growing sharply. For india some restrictions however Sikhs getting religious tourist visa and Indians with dual nationality get visa easily on foreign passports.

Excellent information. I would also like to add Ketas in Potwar platue with it amazing hindu temple ruins and beautiful scenery.

Hi Emily, Your article on 20 Most Beautiful Places in Pakistan is just an amazing effort. One can understand how challenging it is to select only 20 out of hundreds of attractions stretching across the country. Its diverse landscape, historic monuments, cultural diversity, food, weather patterns presenting seasonal variations in natural colors, and much more…. The more you travel the more you explore. Keep it up!

saif ul malook is also a beautiful lake in pakistan.

Thanks for the tip!

No mahudand lake is best

I don’t know who wrote this but they forgot to mention the most beautiful and picturesque Kaghan valley here. So heartening!

Thanks for the recommendation!

Hey Mexx, you can still visit Hunza valley in December, alternate routes are open, and you can also take flights from Islamabad to Gilgit and Skardu if you want to avoid long road journeys. Both places are easy to access in winters and breathtaking.

Indeed Pakistan is really a Heaven on Earth and the Hearts of Pakistanis are more beautiful than these places. I believe that the World must now open its eyes and see the peace and tranquility we Pakistanis have earned through the hardships and struggles. Our Hearts are always open for everyone.

Beautiful places. Amazing people. Everyone should visit this piece of heaven on earth

PAKISTAN IS AMAZING THANKS FOR YOUR COMPLIMENT

Surrounded by lush green pine forests and mighty mountain peaks, this picturesque hill station remains a tourist hotspot all through the year. The pleasant weather, vibrant lifestyle and scenic views make Murree an ideal place to spend some time with family during summer vacations. However, as soon as the year begins to near its end, Murree turns into a winter wonderland, with a thick layer of snow covering the tall colonial-era buildings and tall oak trees in the area.

If you are looking for places to visit in Pakistan during winter that aren’t too far from the city and offer all the latest amenities, this breathtaking hill station is perhaps your best option. Not to mention, the weather in Murree doesn’t get as harsh as in many other northern areas, making it easily accessible even in winter.

Some of the major tourist attractions in and around Murree include Mall Road, Pindi Point, Kashmir Point, Chattar Park, Bhurban, Ayubia and Patriata. Moreover, Murree boasts a number of budget-friendly and upscale hotels, guest houses and resorts. As for dining options, you can find something for every palate here. Some of the most popular restaurants and cafes in one of the top winter vacation destinations in Pakistan include Des Pardes Murree, Usmania Restaurant, Thaali Restaurant, Murree Tabaq Restaurant and Red Onion to name a few. Nathia Gali

Considered a veritable piece of heaven on earth, Nathia Gali is yet another top winter holiday destinations in Pakistan known for its enchanting landscape, hiking tracks and tourist attractions. The weather in Nathia Gali remains rather cool during the summer, attracting travellers from all across the country to spend a few days here. During winters, the area receives heavy snowfall, with the temperature dropping down to -8 degrees Celsius during severe cold spells.

Most people opt for exploring the charming mountain resort of Nathia Gali during their trip to Murree, given their proximity. Although hiking may not be an option for some during the cold winter months, which leaves the entire mountain range covered in snow, you can still spend your time exploring the mesmerizing natural beauty of the area, visiting the bustling Nathia Gali Bazaar and checking out St. Matthews Church, one of the most beautiful and historic churches in Pakistan.

Although Nathia Gali does not see as many tourists as Murree, it still attracts a lot of holiday-makers during the peak months. If you want to spend some time at this mountain resort, there are quite a few good hotels and restaurants situated in the area.

Recently, in a bid to promote tourism in the region, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa introduced camping pods in Nathiagali along with a few other popular tourist destinations in Pakistan.

Malam Jabba

Malam Jabba, a stunning hill station in the Hindu Kush Mountain region, is also among the best places to visit in Pakistan during winter. Apart from chairlifts and skiing platforms, the charming resort also features ice-skating rinks among other modern facilities. Those who enjoy trekking can also check the two famous trails located in the area, one of which starts about 18 kilometres from the ski resort and passes through Shangla Top whereas the other is located some 17 kilometres from the resort and goes through Sabonev Valley.

Malam Jabba is accessible all year and you won’t have trouble finding good hotels and restaurants in the area. Owing to the influx of tourists over the past couple of years, one can easily find civic amenities and facilities in the region.

Kalam Valley

Kalam Valley is one of the best places to visit in Pakistan in December. Located in the upper reaches of the picturesque Swat Valley, Kalam is a popular winter tourist destination, known for its mesmerizing landscape, glacial lakes, mesmerizing Swat River, dense forests and majestic snow-clad mountain peaks. To put it simply, the incredible beauty of this valley is enough to leave one utterly speechless.

This exceptionally beautiful tourist destination is situated at an altitude of about 6,600 feet and is home to a number of hotels and restaurants. For those planning to travel to Kalam during winter vacations, the temperature can drop as low as 1 degree Celsius, which is still tolerable compared to the weather in most areas of Gilgit Baltistan.

Moreover, since Kalam does not get as many tourists as other places on this list, you can easily explore this vast and spacious valley on your own. The locals are also extremely hospitable, so you won’t have to worry about getting lost either. If you plan a trip to Kalam, make sure to visit the nearby valleys of Usho, Matiltan and Utror as well. The famous Mahodand Lake and Kundol Lake are also a must-visit.

You can find out more about Kalam Valley in our detailed guide on travelling to Swat – one of the most beautiful places in Pakistan to visit during vacations.

The exotic town of Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also a great place to visit in Pakistan during winter. Owing to the completion of the Lowari Tunnel, one of the most famous tunnels in Pakistan, this scenic region is now accessible all around the year. Located about 4,900 feet above sea level, Chitral is surrounded by the magnificent Hindu Kush range and is home to the striking Chitral River. Until 1947, this town served as the capital of the princely state of Chitral. It is now the capital of Chitral District, which also comprises the famous Kalasha Valleys – including Bumburet, Rumbur and Biriu.

While trekking in Chitral is usually not possible in winter due to heavy snowfall, it is a rather popular spot for those who love skiing. Some of the main tourist attractions in and around Chitral include the historic Chitral Fort, Chitral Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, the Old Royal Fort in Mastuj, Chitral Gol National Park and most importantly, the famous Chitral Polo Ground.

There are several hotels and rest houses located in Chitral for every budget, along with eateries serving delicious local food. Furthermore, if you travel to Chitral during mid-December, you may also be able to check out the colourful and vibrant Kailash Winter Festival.

Cholistan Desert

If you love stargazing and are fond of exploring old forts and monuments of historic importance, you should consider visiting Cholistan during the upcoming winter vacations. The majestic Cholistan Desert is one of the most overlooked places to visit in Pakistan during winter. This magnificent natural wonder is also known as Rohi in the local language and boasts a number of cultural and heritage sites, some dating back centuries. It is located a short distance from Bahawalpur, a small yet popular city in Punjab. The desert itself is quite large and adjoins Thar in Sindh before extending over to India. Some of the most famous tourist attractions in Cholistan include the historic Derawar Fort built in the 9th Century AD, Dodhla Forest and the shrines of Channan Pir.

Travellers can also book Desert Safari for a memorable experience and visit the bustling bazaar to buy some handicrafts and mementoes. As for accommodation, you can simply book a hotel in Bahawalpur and spend a night or two camping in the desert. Moreover, during your trip to the incredible Cholistan Desert, make sure to take a day out to visit the magnificent Noor Mahal in Bahawalpur, one of the most impressive palatial mansions in the entire country that dates back to 1872.

best places in pakistan to visit in winter

From avoiding monsoon conditions to choosing the perfect time to hike, this seasonal guide to Pakistan can help you plan when to visit © Jesse33 / Shutterstock

The terrain in Pakistan ranges from sea level deserts to the second highest point on earth at the summit of 8611m (28,251ft) K2, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the country sees a huge range of climatic conditions. The best time to visit will depend largely on whether you are drawn by the dramatic mountain scenery of the far north or by the mosques, bazaars and archaeological sites of the lowlands to the south.

If you want a taste of everything , then shoulder-season October might just be your perfect month, but there are reasons to visit at any time of year. When planning your trip, also consider the scheduling of local religious holidays (which shift date every year with the Islamic lunar calendar), as well as the impact of the monsoon rains – flooding can seriously impact your transportation options.

To avoid slogging to the sights in baking 40°C (104°F) heat or freezing your toes off on an icy mountain trail, here are our tips for the best times to visit Pakistan.

A motorcyclist rides along a highway in a mountainous region surrounded by trees that are turning into autumn golds and oranges

April to October is the best time to visit the northern mountains and the Karakoram Highway

The Pakistani summer, from April to October, is the prime time to head north along the dramatic Karakoram Highway into Pakistan’s most jaw-dropping mountain scenery. Aim your sights at the regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza, Chitral and Skardu. The summer temperatures in the mountains are comfortable (though hot at times around Gilgit) and the high pastures are at their glorious peak.

Between April and September, it’s too hot to visit lowland destinations such as the Punjab in comfort. Even if you make a beeline for the mountains, you’ll likely have to endure baking 40°C (104°F) temperatures for a day or two while transiting through Islamabad or Rawalpindi .

June and July are the peak months for domestic travel, as even Pakistanis flee the southern heat for the cool of the hills. Accommodation prices are at their peak during these months, and July also brings the famous – and highly popular – polo festival that takes place atop the dramatic Shandur Pass, dividing Gilgit and Chitral. Book ahead at these times.

The beginning and end of summer, notably September and October, are our favorite times to visit. These are the best months if you are looking for fewer crowds, cooler weather, and appealing shoulder-season discounts at hotels.

Note that while the Karakoram Highway through Pakistan is open year-round from Islamabad to the customs post at Sost, the international border crossing between Pakistan and China’s Xinjiang border closes in winter between November and March. The exact dates depend on weather conditions; the political situation can also lead to closures. The crossing is also closed on weekends and during the public holidays of either country.

Winter, from November to March, is the best time to explore Sindh and the Punjab

Central and southern Pakistan offer an incredible range of historical, architectural and archaeological sites, from ancient lost cities such as Moenjodaro to massive walled forts such as Rohtas and buzzing Sufi shrines – sacred to a mystical branch of Islam. Spring and summer are suffocatingly hot here, but the winter temperatures are warm and comfortable.

The southernmost province of Sindh is warm even in the coldest months of December and January, including on the beaches of Karachi . November to March is also good for the Punjab, including trips to the city of Lahore, though temperatures are starting to heat up by March However, be aware that December is crop burning time in the Punjab, making it oppressively hazy and smoggy.

Much of northern Pakistan, from the upper Swat Valley northwards, shivers in a mantle of snow during winter, though transport on the main highways still operates and the views are spectacular, if you are equipped for the cold.

October and November are the best months to combine the mountains and the plains

If you want to experience the extraordinary scenic beauty of mountainous places such as Hunza in Gilgit-Baltistan, but also want to visit the cultural highlights of central Pakistan, such as Mughal-era Lahore or the 2000-year-old Buddhist remains of Taxila , then autumn offers the best of both worlds. As an added bonus, throughout October you’ll get to see some stunning fall colors on the trees that line the mountain valleys around Hunza, Skardu and Chitral.

A woman stands on a sandy plain with a range of snowcapped mountains rising in the distance

Come in July and August for trekking in the north

By June, the wide mountain crossings of the Babusar, Shandur and Khunjerab passes have generally opened to vehicles, but if you have your sights on crossing high passes on foot, then you are better waiting until July. This sweet spot is short-lived; August brings snow-free trails but also more chance of rain and flooding, as the monsoon wreaks its havoc further south.

If we had to recommend one trek, the world-class K2 Base Camp trek is epic. Starting from the village of Askole (northeast of Skardu), the trail can be walked between mid-June and mid-September, but July is the best and most popular month.

Mid-March to mid-April is the best time for beautiful spring blooms in mountain valleys

If you are more concerned with looking at the mountains rather than hiking into them, then spring is a sublimely beautiful season in the Hunza, Swat and Chitral valleys. April in particular brings flourishes of apple, cherry and apricot blossoms to the mountain valleys, as the heavily snow-capped mountains provide a dramatic backdrop. However, be warned that April brings some of the hottest temperatures of the year further south – something to consider when planning a trip.

Monsoon flooding is a real possibility in July and August in the south

The annual monsoon rains hit Pakistan slightly later than India, generally arriving by mid-July, and the effects are felt most strongly in the south. Peak rainfall combined with high temperatures and maximum meltwater from the mountains means that flooding can be a real problem, especially in August.

Massive flooding in 2022 caused cataclysmic damage throughout Pakistan, particularly in the southern provinces of Punjab and Sindh, and more than two million people lost their homes. Avoid travel in the southern lowlands during these months if possible.

Islamic Festivals in Pakistan

Note that the dates of Pakistan’s major religious festivals are determined by the Islamic lunar calendar and the dates for these events shift forward by 10 to 11 days each year, relative to the Gregorian solar calendar. The holy month of fasting known in Pakistan as Ramzan (Ramadan) is the festival that most directly affects travelers – most restaurants close from dawn to dusk making mealtimes tricky for those not fasting. In 2024, the fasting month starts around March 11, ending around April 10 with the three-day public holiday of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Other important festivals include the Shia festival of Ashura (July 16–17, 2024) and Eid-ul-Azha, the three-day Feast of Sacrifice, starting on June 17, 2024. Mainly celebrated in Sindh and the Punjab, Pakistan’s colorful urs celebrations (death anniversaries of Sufi saints), are also held on dates fixed by the lunar calendar.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Southeast Asia?

By Sue Bryant

Last updated: September 27th, 2024

Best time to visit Southeast Asia - Bangkok

  • Find a Cruise

The best time to visit Southeast Asia is between November and April, when the weather is settled and the humidity is manageable. This is when you should enjoy blue skies over the beaches of Thailand and Malaysia, and perfect conditions for exploring Vietnam.

Southeast Asia is a big region, with different climate patterns according to where you are. Singapore, for example, has an equatorial climate with two monsoon seasons, while Thailand and Vietnam, which are further north, have a tropical climate.

Bali, which also has a tropical climate and lies very close to the equator, enjoys a dry season through the summer months, from April to October, in contrast to the rest of the region, with its monsoon season coming between November and March.

Essentially, you can visit Southeast Asia at any time of year; when to go depends on the region you want to explore and what you want to do there.

Visiting Southeast Asia by Season

White sand beach in Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia

June, July, and August is the rainy season in much of Southeast Asia. Monsoon rains relieve the humidity, and average temperatures are in the 80s. In Singapore , expect the mercury in July and August to hover around 83°F (28.4°C). Late afternoons tend to bring thundery showers, which clear the air a little.

In Indonesia, the weather is different. Summer is considered the dry season in Bali and possibly the best time to travel there. August is the driest month, with just 0.6 inches (16mm) of rain. For this reason, Bali is a popular destination with North Americans and Europeans, who take their main summer vacation in July and August.

September and October continue to see rain in much of Southeast Asia. November, however, is a good time to visit as the rainy season is ending, to be replaced by more settled weather. Better still, the crowds of the winter high season are yet to arrive.

There are regional variations in weather, of course. In Bangkok, September and October are still subject to heavy rain, while November is much drier, receiving just two inches (50mm) of rain on average, with temperatures averaging 84°F (28.9°C).

The west coast of Malaysia sees rainfall tailing off as fall progresses, with November in Langkawi basking in daily averages of 82.9°F (28.3°C) and toward the end of the month, clearer skies.

In contrast, September is one of the least rainy months in Singapore, with an average of 4.9 inches (125mm) of precipitation.

Best time to visit Southeast Asia - Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Winter is, on the whole, the best time to go to Southeast Asia. Although Singapore remains wet in December, other areas such as Thailand and Vietnam , which lie further north, are enjoying fine, dry weather. December, January, and February are the best months to visit Thailand and Vietnam for the beaches and for sightseeing, while by February, Singapore is enjoying drier weather.

December to February is also a good time to visit the west coast of Malaysia, with January the driest month of the year in Langkawi , which receives just one inch (25mm) of rain.

Either January or February is also the month of Chinese New Year, a time of great festivity throughout the region. And although Christmas is not widely celebrated as a religious holiday, it’s nonetheless a time of celebration.

March and April are still wonderful months to visit Southeast Asia, before the monsoon rains begin to set in from May. You will still be able to enjoy beach time in Phuket, Thailand , and Da Nang, Vietnam.

View of the Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand

Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand

But as May approaches, the heat and humidity increase. In Bangkok , May is one of the hottest months of the year, with a daily average of 87.8°F (31°C) and frequent rain showers. Bali, in contrast, is by now entering its dry season.

When Is Rainy Season?

The rainy season in much of Southeast Asia is from May to October, when there are frequent heavy showers and high humidity. But Southeast Asia is a big region and the rains come at different times, depending on where you are. Singapore, for example, experiences the most rain between November and January, when the northwest monsoon arrives. December here is the wettest month of the year, with an average of 13.1 inches (332mm) of rainfall.

Bangkok, on the other hand, experiences the most rainfall in August, September, and October. When it’s raining in Singapore in December, Bangkok is experiencing one of the driest months of the year, with just 0.2 inches (6mm) of rain, as is Ho Chi Minh City .

Rainy season can be a beautiful time to travel, too. The countryside is green and lush and temples are slick with rain. There are fewer crowds, which makes sightseeing and photography more pleasant. If the humidity becomes too much, museums and malls always have efficient air conditioning.

When Is High Season?

Clear water of Patong Beach in Phuket, Thailand

Patong Beach in Phuket, Thailand

Generally speaking, high season in Southeast Asia is the winter and spring months, from December to April, although there are regional variations. But for most areas, this time of year brings clear skies, long periods of sunshine, and lower humidity. This is the best time for sightseeing and enjoying the beaches of Southeast Asia .

Chinese New Year, or Tet in Vietnam, usually falls in January or February and extends for at least a week. The lunar new year falls on a different date every year, so check before you travel if you want to be part of the celebrations.

When Is Shoulder Season?

April is shoulder season in much of Southeast Asia, as the dry weather transitions into the intense humidity of the pre-monsoon season. November is another shoulder season month in destinations including Langkawi island and Ho Chi Minh City, with the monsoon rains decreasing and the more settled weather of winter being ushered in.

When Is Low Season?

Low season in much of Southeast Asia is the summer and fall months, from May to October, when the monsoons pass through. On the island of Bali, it’s the reverse, with low season falling between December and February. If you happen to be a surfer, however, the conditions in winter are ideal.
