January is an ideal time to travel for those needing to escape winter's chill. While travel deals may be limited during this time, you will skirt humidity and the rainy season in popular warm-weather destinations. And if you're one to welcome the season's snowy offerings, this is the perfect time to take advantage of the powder in mountainous regions north of the equator. U.S. News weighed these factors and more across an array of different destinations – from the rugged to the refined – to come up with the best places to visit in January. As January brings some of the warmest temperatures and the most daylight hours of the year to Argentine Patagonia, it's no surprise that this is one of the most popular months to visit. Conditions will be ideal for kayaking or rafting on the glacier-fed lakes of the Lake District, located in the northern part of Patagonia, or taking a boat cruise to Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park. Plus, the weather will be warm enough (though still brisk) for a trip to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world and an excellent base for hiking in Tierra del Fuego.

If sun, sand and a little adventure are requirements for your post-holiday escape, Railay Beach is a great place to spend your next vacation. January is one of the driest months of the year on this Thai peninsula, so you're likely to encounter sun-soaked days of beaching and kayaking while taking in views of the iconic limestone cliffs. If you're up for more action, this area is known for its rock climbing, and you'll also find several caves and lagoons to explore. Just be sure to book early as accommodations can fill up quickly during the dry season.

Come January, nothing sounds better than warm temperatures in the 80s and some of the best beaches in the Caribbean . But once you arrive, you'll find that these tropical islands have even more to offer. This two-island nation boasts prime sailing conditions, blue waters perfect for snorkeling and lush forests and volcanoes for those who prefer to explore on land. Plus, if you're ringing in the new year here, you'll catch the closing events for the islands' biggest festival – the St. Kitts and Nevis National Carnival. Deemed Sugar Mas by the locals, this cultural celebration makes this one of the sweetest times of year to visit.

Venture to this Swiss ski town during the winter months for a scenic getaway. One of Zermatt's most impressive sights is its world-renowned Matterhorn. For breathtaking views, take a cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Europe’s highest mountain station. Here, travelers can explore Glacier Palace, an enchanting attraction with ice tunnels and ever-changing ice sculptures. Adrenaline junkies can also gaze at this jaw-dropping natural wonder during a helicopter tour, or they can try hiking or skiing one of the area's 37 other mountains. Zermatt itself is car-free, but visitors can get around on foot or bike, or by using the town's electric taxis.

Located in the Andalusian region of southern Spain, Seville boasts a number of can't-miss attractions (think: the Real Alcázar and Plaza de España). You'll also want to save time for a leisurely stroll down the winding streets of Barrio Santa Cruz, Seville's former Jewish quarter. Although weather this time of year is chilly for Spain (temperatures typically hover in the 50s and 60s), this is still much warmer than many other European destinations. Plus, travelers who visit in early January will be able to experience Three Kings Day, a celebration commemorating the day that the three Magi visited baby Jesus.

An African safari may not be the first destination you think of when planning a winter getaway, but a trip to Tanzania's Serengeti National Park should be on your radar. January is one of the best times to travel here, as it is when numerous wildebeest breed during their Great Migration throughout the park. To catch a glimpse of this can't-miss natural phenomenon, which is one of the largest herd movements in the world, base yourself in Southern Serengeti or the northern part of the adjacent Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Those looking to get away from chilly winter weather should consider a relaxing getaway to the British Virgin Islands. Average temperatures hover between the high 70s and low 80s this time of year, making it easy to enjoy the many outdoor activities that the four main islands have to offer. With ferries regularly traveling to and from the various islands, visitors can sunbathe on the sandy shores of Cane Garden Bay on the capital island of Tortola one day and explore The Baths on Virgin Gorda the next.

Home to two of the world's most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kīlauea, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park appeals to adventurous travelers. Hike or drive along Crater Rim Drive to see stunning views of the Kīlauea caldera, or attend an educational ranger program to learn more about the park's history. January is Volcano Awareness Month on the Big Island, and the park holds several events during this time to promote the understanding and respect of volcanoes. Keep in mind, certain areas of the park may be closed due to seismic activity, so check the park website prior to arrival.

January is one of the driest times of the year in this tropical Central American country. That means it's much easier to enjoy Costa Rica's vast array of outdoor offerings and wildlife-viewing opportunities, such as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. What's more, a number of culturally significant festivals take place in January, including the Fiestas Palmares, which features everything from bullfights to outdoor concerts. Looking to catch some waves? This is also a great time of year to go surfing in Costa Rica, especially for beginners.

For low humidity and daytime temperatures in the 70s, schedule a January visit to Florida's Anna Maria Island. Thanks to the comfortable weather, outdoor activities like dining on seafood at a waterfront restaurant and window shopping along Bridge Street are more than enjoyable. Crowds are also minimal during this time, so you can bask in the ocean breeze from top shorelines like Coquina Beach and Bean Point without flocks of other tourists blocking your view. Just remember to keep your eyes peeled for manatees – these gentle "sea cows" can often be seen in the shallow waters surrounding Anna Maria Island during winter.

If your heart is set on a winter wonderland, Whistler is the spot for you. This Canadian ski destination averages around 80 inches of snowfall in January, so you're bound to have some fresh powder when you hit the slopes, snowmobile or snowshoe. You'll also have plenty of opportunity to embrace the elements while you ice skate at the Village at Whistler Olympic Plaza or ice fish on serene lakes. When you're ready to warm up, enjoy Whistler's après-ski scene with craft beer at a pub, or cozy up by the fire at one of the area's iconic chalets.

If you're seeking a cheap tropical vacation that's closer to home, Cancún is just south enough to offer an easily accessible warm weather getaway. Though January is one of the coolest months in this Mexican city, average temperatures typically remain in the high 70s and low 80s, and there is minimal humidity, which makes this a perfect time to visit. Just be prepared for others to have the same idea and book your trip early. When you're not defrosting on the beach, you can fill your time with day trips and tours to must-visit ruins, nature reserves and nearby islands.

If you prefer snow over sand, consider taking a trip to Aspen, Colorado, one of the best places to travel in January. Daily average temperatures tend to hover near or below freezing, so you'll need to bundle up while shredding powder on one of the town's four ski mountains. Visit at the end of the month to catch Aspen's annual X Games, where top athletes compete in skiing and snowboarding. The town also offers a premier après-ski scene, along with plenty of museums, theaters and shops for when you need a break from the slopes.

Take a trip Down Under for an unforgettable outdoor adventure. In January, this Australian island offers its warmest weather of the year – average highs sit in the low 70s – thanks to its location in the Southern Hemisphere. Much of Tasmania is protected in national parks and wildlife reserves, offering nature lovers plenty of opportunities to hike, camp and spot wildlife. Travelers can also head to the capital city of Hobart to explore its food and wine offerings or visit the Mona, a unique underground art museum with its own brewery, winery and restaurant.

Boasting the world's tallest building (Burj Khalifa), the world's largest shopping center (the Dubai Mall) and the world's longest urban zip line (the XLine Dubai), this United Arab Emirates city has plenty to offer travelers come January. Average temperatures this time of year hover around the mid-70s, which is ideal for people-watching on popular Kite Beach, strolling through the whimsical Dubai Miracle Garden or floating down Dubai Creek on a water taxi (called an abra). If you need to get out of the sun, consider touring the ornate Jumeirah Mosque or observing marine life at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo.

Some of these destinations are in the shoulder season, so you’ll find affordable pricing, which is always a bonus, too! From experiencing destinations with tons of culture to cities with amazing food scenes, you’ll find the perfect spot for your vacation in January.

Best countries to visit in January

January is a fabulous time to travel! Whether you’re looking to escape the winter cold and hit the beach, you’re up for adventure in a new city, or you’re wishing for a winter wonderland to enjoy, here’s some amazing destinations.

1. Costa Rica (one of the best places to visit in January for sun)

Average temp:  high 78, low 64 (varied by region) Fly into:  Juan Santamaria International Airport, San Jose

If you’re looking for the best countries to visit in January, then Costa Rica absolutely needs to be on your radar! Zipline through cloud forests, watch monkeys and toucans dance around in the trees, dip your toes into luxurious sandy beaches and enjoy great food, Costa Rica has so much to offer visitors.

December through April is dry season, as it’s when you’ll see the best weather in Costa Rica. Although the temperatures vary based on which region you travel to, it’s still a great getaway than being stuck in the cold back home.

Visit the famous Arenal Volcano and enjoy the hot springs in La Fortuna. Still in the mountainous region, there are plenty of things to do in Monteverde , including ziplining and walking the suspension bridges through the cloud forests.

For a perfect beach getaway, head west to Tamarindo, where you can hit the water surfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. With hotels and restaurants sprinkled throughout the beach, it’s a great spot to spend a few days.

If you’re looking for more adventure, head to Manuel Antonio National Park, where you can witness monkeys and sloths hanging about!

Be sure to spend some time at the best beaches in Manuel Antonio , including my favorite, Playa Espadilla Sur. There’s so many things to do in Manuel Antonio , you could spend an entire vacation just in this area.

Costa Rica is definitely one of the best places to visit in January for sun, and a destination you’ll love!

Austria is a landlocked country between Germany and Italy, located in Central Europe. The alps extend from the west to the east and create a perfect winter wonderland every year.

People come from all over the world to enjoy the warm and fun ski resort experience in the Austrian mountains. There is something for everyone, from skiing, ski touring, snowboarding, ice skating, snow walking, sledging to country cross skiing.

A mulled wine or a Jagertee warm up every cold heart! Villages and cities are decorated with wonderful lights, creating a magical dreamy environment, the perfect place for a vacation in January. This is the best time to relax body and soul in some of the most remarkable thermal baths and sauna villages in Central Europe.

Old traditions make Austria a unique place to be in January. They can still be experienced at the beginning of January, the Perchten run in the Tyrol region and the Glöckler run in Styria. The capital city Vienna, as well as other well-known cities such as Salzburg and Innsbruck, are for all those looking for classic inspiration and the vibes of a long gone empire.

The weather in Austria in January is usually between 0 and 50 Fahrenheit. The higher one travels, the colder it gets.

The best way to get to Austria is via the Vienna airport, located in the east. Other options include the Salzburg airport, Innsbruck airport or even the much larger Munich airport in Germany.

3. Colombia

Average temp:  high 66, low 45 Fly into:  El Dorado International Airport, Bogota

The South American country of Colombia is a great destination in January – in fact, it’s one of the best weather times to visit of the entire year! In January, the sun is shining, the weather is warm (though there is a huge variety of average temperatures throughout the country), and the rain is low. 

In general, Colombia is a great place to visit, no matter the time of year. It’s a very inexpensive country to travel to, and there’s a wide variety of things to see and do. The capital city of Bogota has an old town filled with colonial architecture, cobblestoned streets, and a wide variety of historical buildings and world class museums. 

Or, you can visit the Coffee Region of Colombia, such as the little, colorful town of Salento. Here, you can visit the coffee farms of Colombia or go hiking in the Cocora Valley, a magical hike into the mountains, where you can see the famous wax palms of Colombia – the tallest palms in the world that grow up to 200 feet high!

Finally, a must visit spot in Colombia is the coastal city of Cartagena, a photogenic, absolutely gorgeous colonial walled city with colorful buildings covered in plants and flowers. 

As you travel throughout Colombia, you’ll likely take a quick plane ride between the different cities. Many people choose to start their Colombia adventure by flying into the El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, and staying in Bogota at the Magdalena Guest House is a perfectly located spot to start your exploration of this gorgeous and varied country in South America.

4. Aruba (a favorite on this list of best countries to visit in January)

If you’re looking for a beachy escape from the clutches of old man winter, look no further than gorgeous Aruba! January is a fantastic time to visit not only to enjoy sunny skies and 80-degree weather, but it’s also a unique place to ring in the New Year .

Typically, New Year’s Eve is kicked off with loads of fireworks throughout the city (if you were planning to sleep – good luck 😉), from large displays over the water to traditional Pagara (long strings of Chinese firecrackers) throughout the streets; there’s no end to colorful and fiery displays.

After that, the party doesn’t stop! Throughout January and into February, there are countless parades like the nighttime Torch Light Parade and other festivities in honor of Carnival . The official start of Carnival is in November, but most of the festivities happen in January and February.

Because of these fun festivities, you should expect to pay a little more for accommodations. To get the best deal, book early!

Aside from a colorful party scene, Aruba is also known for mesmerizing white sand beaches like Palm and Eagle Beach. These are 2 great spots to kick back and relax with a fruity cocktail. They’re some of the best beaches in Aruba !

If you’re looking for an epic winter adventure, consider visiting Iceland in January. 

While the days may be short here, you’ll get to enjoy Iceland’s spectacular scenery to yourself, given that the summer crowds have long departed. Better yet, you’ll likely get to see Iceland covered with glistening snow. This is a fantastic time to explore the country’s ice caves or go on a glacier hike!

People travel from all over the world to Iceland in January, given that it’s one of the absolute best months to see the spectacular Northern Lights, thanks to the long, dark nights.

You can either book a guided tour to try to find the lights or drive outside of major cities, away from light pollution, to spot them yourself. Patience is key- seeing the lights depends on whether there’s solar activity, as well as whether there’s clouds obscuring the night sky. 

Another excellent winter activity here is taking advantage of any of the geothermal hot springs you’ll find scattered throughout the country. The springs may be more natural, like the Hellulaug Hot Pool, which is just an organically-formed pool overlooking the ocean, or can be straight up swanky, like the recently opened Sky Lagoon, with an infinity pool and sauna with stunning views of Kársnes Harbour.

The easiest way to reach this tiny island country is to fly into Reykjavik’s Keflavik International Airport.  Iceland’s weather in January is cold, but not as chilly as its Northern location might suggest, thanks to the relatively warm water from the gulf stream- you can expect temperatures to generally range from 26 to 37 degrees Fahrenheit. 

So be sure to include lots of warm layers on your Iceland packing list , like a base layer, parka, and gloves so you can actually enjoy exploring Iceland’s incredible landscape.

6. Thailand

Average temp:  high 89, low 73 Fly into:  Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok / Phuket International Airport, Phuket

Thailand is an incredible place, and one of the best countries to visit in January. With a large variety of destinations to see within Thailand, you’ll need to decide what kind of experience you want to have, and plan your vacation accordingly.

If you’re looking for beautiful temples, rich in historic architecture loaded with history, then Bangkok or Chiang Mai might be the right spot for you. Stay in the city a few days to soak in the sights. Be sure to take a food tour, and if your’e in Bangkok, visit the floating markets.

If a beach getaway is what you’re after, you have a variety of choices as well. The Phi Phi Islands offer some of the most pristine beaches in all of Thailand. Or, you can opt for Krabi, where there’s a mix of beaches and historical sights to explore.

Phuket is one of the most popular destinations in Thailand, and for good reason. With beautiful white sand beaches and plenty of amenities and accommodations, there’s something for everyone.

Take a snorkeling tour or day trip to Coral Island Phuket to see the area. And with an international airport, it’s easier to get to Phuket than some of the other islands in Thailand.

January is a fabulous time to visit Thailand because it’s the dry season. With plenty of sunshine, culture, food and activities, you’re sure to have a great time in Thailand!

7. France (one of the best places to visit in January Europe)

Average temp:  high 56, low 37 (varies by region) Fly into:  Aéroport Nice Côte d’Azur, Nice

The month of January is a  great time to visit France because it is less crowded. Since it’s part of the low season, hotel and flight prices are more affordable.

Outside of the capital, Strasbourg in the north is a fantastic alternative. The Cathedral, art galleries, and taverns serving hearty plates of sauerkraut and local wines await visitors to this peaceful and unhurried city.

However, the French Riviera may be the best choice for people who prefer a warmer vacation in January. Also known as La Côte d’Azur (Azure Coast), it is accessible via the Aéroport Nice Côte d’Azur which is the second busiest international airport in France next to Paris. The French Riviera is a good option for those who prefer milder temperatures. 

Visiting the French Riviera in January will show you a more laid-back side of France, free of curious tourists and offering more affordable rates. Fewer visitors mean you get a good deal in even the more expensive hotel rooms, as well as cheaper meals in the area’s top restaurants.

A highly recommended place to stay in the  Royal Antibes , a stylish modern hotel with a prime location on the beach. The price of a room with huge glass windows and great views starts at slightly over €100.

You can spend your days touring the Côte d’Azur in between taking in the breathtaking vistas of the sea and basking in the mild Mediterranean weather . Enjoy the crisp winter days hiking the French Riviera’s beautiful trails, including the spectacular route over Èze-village or the Baou above St. Jeannet, with superb views over the Var Valley.

You might also find mimosas in the village of Tanneron, which is also home to Europe’s largest mimosa forest, the Massif de Tanneron.

The town of Menton, meanwhile, is known for its beautiful gardens and well-preserved old town center. The ancient walled city of Antibes is also well worth exploring. And if you want to experience a winter vacation like celebrities, you can also explore Cannes.

Situated in the middle of the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles, in the American West Indies,  Antigua is arguably one of the prettiest Caribbean islands.  

Although it is a favorite destination for honeymoons and romantic escapes, it makes a perfect vacation for any kind of traveler that is not on a budget. 

It is in fact quite an expensive destination, especially if you choose to stay at one of the beautiful Antigua all inclusive resorts on the pristine Caribbean coast, which is very much recommended if you want to enjoy the island at its best. 

Antigua and Barbuda is actually made of the 2 namesake islands and many small islets, some of which are great snorkeling spots that you can visit by joining one of the boat tours available. 

Antigua is one of the best countries to visit in January because it’s dry season with less risk of rain. So expect a lot of sunshine and blue sky. But also it’s the most expensive time of the year to travel to Antigua, for the same reason, which is something to keep in mind as well.

Antigua is renowned for its incredible beaches (they say there are 365, one for each day of the year) and spectacular landscapes. Its home to gorgeous scenery with lush hills tumbling over the white sand beaches and the turquoise Caribbean sea.

Among the things you shouldn’t miss in Antigua, besides getting pampered in your gorgeous luxury hotel, are:

• Rent a car to explore all the spectacular beaches, including Darkwood beach, Dickenson bay and Half Moon Bay
• Dance at the sound of calypso music at Shirley Heights on a Sunday while watching the sun going down
• Try the local cuisine in one of the delicious restaurants on the beach
• Take a walk around the historical site of Nelson Dockyard at English Harbour and join one of the boat tours around the island. 

If you’re traveling on a budget you can also find more modest accommodations but keep in mind that the overall cost of living in the island is high.

If you’re looking for a sunny getaway this January, take a trip adventuring around Mexico. As a massive country, enjoy everything from the vibrant Mexico City to the stunning cenotes of the Riviera Maya to colonial cultural towns and ancient ruins.

With its close proximity to the equator, Mexico enjoys year-round warm weather, making it the perfect place to escape the cold. One of the best months to visit the country, January is in the midst of Mexico’s dry season when temperatures are excellent and rain levels are low.

Average daytime temperature hovers between 75°F-85°F, but differs from region to region. At this time, colder winds and temperatures hit northern Mexico compared to the higher humidity in the south.

Everyone celebrates Christmas in Mexico, and even though January is a bit late for the festivities, enjoy strolling around every town decorated to the brim with holiday decor. January also signals the start of amazing festivals like Merida Fest, Fiesta Grande de Chiapa de Corzo, and Carnaval Jiutepec in Cuernavaca.

Most international flights will land you in the capital Mexico City or other popular tourist hotspots like Cancun or Cabo San Lucas. From there, a  fantastic public transportation system  can bring you to any neighboring cities and tourist attractions.

If you’re thinking of starting the New Year with a bang, what better way to do this than laying on a dreamy beach, with white powdered sand and sone of the clearest water in the world? A trip to the Maldives should be on everyone’s bucket list , and January is the perfect time to do it. 

Although it’s right in the middle of the season, January is perfect for a trip to the Maldives as it’s right after the holidays and just before Valentine’s Day, so the prices are really great during these times. You can even find some  affordable water villas  if you dig enough, and you can maybe score a nice room at  this resort that I’m sure you’ve seen on Instagram already.

Getting there is easy, as there’s one main airport used as a hub, located next to the Capital city of Male. From here, you reach your resort island by either speed boat, seaplane, or a combination of the two, but this is handled by the accommodation itself so you really don’t have to worry about anything while on your trip.

And if you usually have a long list of activities to do while on vacation, you’ll have to adjust when in the Maldives: here, you can only lay on a beach or float in the water.

Of course, you can do various water activities like snorkeling, diving, or going on sunset cruises, or you can lay on a sunbed, hammock, or on a massage table, but you get the point. There’s really no better place in the world to relax than this tropical paradise!

Singapore is one of the best countries to visit in January for those looking for a warm and sunny getaway. The weather is hot and humid year round but January is one of the cooler months making it a great time to visit.

The temperature will still be hot so it is best to see indoor attractions during midday and early afternoon. The evening is a great time to walk around and explore as Singapore is considered one of the safest countries in the world.

One of the top and most unique  Singapore attractions  is Gardens by the Bay, a large nature park with both outdoor and indoor gardens and conservatories. Don’t miss Supertree Grove, made up of huge tree-shaped vertical gardens, that puts on free light and music shows every night.

Another must do is to walk along the waterfront promenade while enjoying skyline views and passing by landmarks including the ArtScience Museum, Helix Bridge and the Merlion statue . Since 60% of the country consists of the Alps, it’s designed for winter sport activities. Switzerland has an incredible number of famous ski resorts with a high amount of lifts and gondolas to take you into the beautiful winter wonderland. 

Impressive landscapes, exemplary service and snow reliability, you can expect great skiing and snowboarding in Switzerland. The Alpine country has a lot to offer when it comes to winter sports.

Once you’re there, it’s easy to see why. In the northern part of the Palawan near El Nido you’ll find beautiful islands, turquoise-blue lagoons, and jagged limestone cliffs. Thus, island hopping is one of  the best things to do in Palawan !

One of the best beach vacations in January is Jamaica. In the middle of the Caribbean Sea, the hurricane season is over and the rush of holiday travelers is gone. However, January is one of the busiest months for visitors to the island, as many are trying to escape the winter back home.

Relax and rest in luxury at an all-inclusive resort in Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios. From family friendly options to adults-only resorts, there’s something for everyone. Although, make sure to save up for it in advance, as January has some of the highest prices.

Venture off the resort on a day trip to Dunn’s River Falls, ziplining, bamboo rafting, take a sunset cruise or Blue Hole, Negril , amongst many others.

27. Grenada (another awesome contender for best place to vacation in January)

The island of Grenada in the Caribbean is one of the best islands to visit in January. Located at the southern end of the chain of Caribbean islands, Grenada is still rooted deeply in culture and nature to experience, without a whole lot of big chain influences.

January is an amazing time to visit, as the temperature is roughly 86 degrees year round during the day, and the water stays nice and warm too! It’s the perfect getaway from the winter cold to enjoy warm water, beautiful beaches, waterfalls, a tropical climate and Caribbean culture.

The easiest way to get to Grenada is by flying into Maurice Bishop International Airport. Once you arrive, you can either grab a taxi (they look like small buses) or make your way to a shuttle if your accommodation offers transportation.

There’s a huge range of accommodation options, including many homestay options, more casual resorts, all the way to luxury all inclusives. My recommendation for an eco-friendly boutique hotel is the True Blue Bay Resort , while if you’re looking for something all inclusive, Spice Island Beach Resort .

January does fall within Grenada’s high season, so be prepared for more crowds than if you went during the rainy season (summer months).

Definitely visit one of Grenada’s Best Beaches while there, and try to take an island wide guided tour to experience waterfalls, sulphur springs, cocoa farms, local distilleries or more! Plus, the world-famous underwater attraction, snorkeling the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park is a must-do while visiting the island.

You’ll want to stay in Grenada at least a week to experience all there is to see and do! Grenada is one of the best countries to visit in January. It’s an amazing destination with the welcoming and vibrant Caribbean culture that you don’t want to miss!

28. South Africa

South Africa is one of the best countries in the world for a January vacation. It’s the ideal spot to take a breath and enjoy life.

January in South Africa sees the weather at its best, particularly in the western regions. Summer below the equator is in full swing, and the air is warm and dry.

However you dream of spending your time, this sizable country is teeming with great adventures and awe-inspiring beauty just for you!  Come to South Africa to see the iconic wildlife, enjoy the most picturesque road trips of your life, or explore its astounding urban highlights. 

Or try a shark-cage dive off the coast! Whichever activity you choose, your options are countless. 

If this abundance of activities doesn’t earn South Africa a vote for the best countries to visit in January, maybe this will: all of these remarkable activities are accessible from the spectacular city of Cape Town. It’s the ultimate base for your South African vacation.

29. England

England  is an underrated country to visit in January. It’s the perfect mix of winter wonderland and mild temperatures, depending on where you visit.

For example, Oxford and Birmingham typically see dustings of snow throughout January. You may even find enough snow a few days a year to build a small snowman!

But places like Brighton Beach will remain snow-less. There are even days London will be as sunny as in summer!

The mild temperatures attract visitors who are looking to escape the freezing cold of Canada or Scandinavia, but don’t want to pay the inflated prices of a beach vacation. Temperatures average 5C (41F).

Don’t forget to pack a light coat and some waterproof boots , as it can drizzle throughout January.

Luckily, the best things to do in the UK aren’t summer-based.

Having high tea in Covent Garden, touring Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford upon Avon, listening to live music at a pub, and enjoying British stand-up at local comedy houses are all great indoor activities to take advantage of.

There are plenty of ways to save money while still enjoying everything the country has to offer. For starters, take advantage of the many free museums and galleries.

You can also find cheap eats by avoiding tourist traps and sticking to local pubs. And finally, take advantage of the many cheap or free walking tours available in most cities.

The UK is easily accessible from anywhere in the world.

Major airports include London Heathrow (LHR) and London Gatwick (LGW). Stanstead is another option, but then you’ll need to take a long train journey. 

To get around, take trains for cheap day trips from London to places like Bath and Oxford.

30. India (an underrated one on this guide for warm vacations in January)

While India may be on your travel bucket list , January is also a great time to cross it off!

January in India means it’s dry season, so you don’t need to worry about rain like you do during monsoon season. While India is a large country, narrowing down what you want to see and do will help determine what weather you’ll face and where to fly into .

The northern part of India is home to the famous Taj Mahal. Located in Agra, the Taj Mahal can be visited via day trip from Delhi. One of the new 7 wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal’s grand and impressive architecture is stunning in real life!

In southern India, the popular towns of Bengaluru (aka Bangalore) is a busy city with so many things to do. Bangalore is famous for the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, the Bengaluru Palace, Bull Temple and Cuban Park. Nearby Mysuru (aka Mysore) is a great day trip or weekend getaway from Bangalore. Be sure to watch the lighting of the Mysore Palace – stunning!

If you’re looking for a beach destination in India, Goa is the place to be. With gentle waves, swaying palm trees and beautiful, relaxing hotels, Goa is a great spot to relax and unwind in India. It’s truly a great destination, and one of the best countries to visit in January.

31. The Gambia

Perched on the west coast of Africa is a small but charming country known as The Gambia. The Gambia is renowned for its lengthy swathes of golden sand beaches, freshly caught fish and smiling locals.

The Gambia has 2 distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The dry season runs from November to May and is the best time to visit. The temperature at this time of year is pleasant – roughly 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) – and you can expect bright sunshine on most days.

January is also a great time of year to visit due to the country’s annual Banjul Demba Cultural Festival. Here, you’ll witness traditional music and dance performances in the country’s capital city.

The Gambia is a very small country and so only houses one international airport: Banjul International Airport.

Most visitors to The Gambia choose to base themselves in Serrekunda, a vibrant town set behind a glorious stretch of beach, fringed by lazy palm trees.

Serrekunda is a mere 30 minute drive from the airport. It’s easy to grab a taxi from the airport, or you can pre-arrange a taxi with your hotel or via a taxi company beforehand.

Alternatively, you can hire a car in The Gambia . I’d personally recommend pre-booking a taxi from a reputable company as some taxis at the airport are in questionable condition.

There are numerous hotels in Serrekunda for you to choose from but a personal favourite of mine is Luigi’s Complex. It has a very friendly and laid-back vibe and is only a short walk from the beach.

32. New Zealand (by far one of the best countries to visit in January)

A bucket-list destination for many, New Zealand is at the top of its game in January. This summer month brings some of the warmest temperatures in the country, delighting visitors that enjoy sunny days at the beach.

New Zealand is a surprisingly large country – a fact that many people underestimate when planning a vacation. The amount of time you have will affect the places you are able to visit, however, these are some amazing summer spots in Aotearoa.

If you’re able to include them in your itinerary, you’ll be sure to come away happy. After all, New Zealand is one of the best countries to visit in January!

Paihia is located in the Bay of Islands, and though it is beautiful at any time of year, it’s particularly vibrant during the summer season. Known for its stunning beaches, uninhabited islands, settled weather and marine life, this is a must-see in January. Kerikeri is the closest airport to Paihia, but many choose to fly into Auckland and drive up.

Moving down the North Island, the Coromandel Peninsula is another summer-time favourite for locals and visitors alike . Significant highlights include Hot Water Beach (where you can dig your own natural hot pool in the sand), Cathedral Cove and New Chums Beach, all of which are best enjoyed in the warmth of the summer season. Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga airports all service this region.

Finally, a summertime trip to Fiordland should be on your radar. Though this area experiences a lot of rain right throughout the year, this will be your best chance at seeing it on a nice day.

When the weather is still, the mirror reflection of  Milford Sound on the water really is incomparable. Queenstown is the closest airport to Milford Sound, though many choose to stay in Te Anau.

One of the best places to visit in January for sun is the European island of Malta . Actually, Malta is made up of 3 islands, Malta, Gozo, and Comino.

Compared to other European countries,  Malta in winter  is usually very sunny and in January temperatures can go up to 20 degrees Celsius which on a sunny day feels very pleasant.

One of the best things about going in January is that fewer tourists venture to the island which is mainly considered a summer destination. But what most people fail to realize is that it is the best time for going hiking and exploring the ancient towns.

Malta has a long history, and if you get rainy or windy days it’s perfect to explore underground where you can walk through the World War Two Shelters or discover the old catacombs in Rabat. On the other hand, if the weather is nice, you can easily go for a quick dip in the crystal-clear water.

There are numerous flights connecting Malta with the rest of Europe. In addition, you can take the boat directly from Sicily in Italy.

Getting around Malta by bus is easy, it costs 1.50 Euros for a ticket that lasts you for 2 hours (including bus changes.) On top of that, they have tap and pay so there is no need for cash.

34. Turks and Caicos (another favorite on this list for best beach vacations in January)

Last but certainly not least is the dreamy island chain of Turks and Caicos. Definitely worthy of a spot on this list of the best countries to visit in January, Turks and Caicos has unbelievable white sand beaches with the most turquoise water you’ll ever see.

A beach destination with the right mix of good food and water activities, Turks and Caicos is a laid-back island chain where the term ‘island time’ could have been created.

The whimsical nature of the island is perfect for a January getaway when all that matters is what time you should re-apply your sunblock . (By the way, be sure to use ocean-safe sunblock at all times to protect marine life.)

Staying on the main island of Providenciales doesn’t have to break the bank, either. It’s possible to do Turks and Caicos on a budget , without sacrificing a good time on the island chain.

While there, be sure to visit the best beaches on Turks and Caicos . Grace Bay Beach is the most popular, but moving away from the busy tourist spot will provide you with amazing views where you *might* just be the only one there.

Fabulous post Nikki! It just shows how many fantastic places there are for holidays in January. When I was younger I would have been tempted by the tropical islands... but now I have learned to ski, places like Austria and Switzerland for would be the best part - those snowy mountain views are beeeautiful!

South Island, New Zealand

New airline routes from the US mainland directly to Christchurch mean that New Zealand 's South Island is more accessible than ever—just in time to fly below the equator for the winter. And what fortuitous timing too: The South Island is one of Condé Nast Traveler 's Best Places to Go in Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific in 2024 . If you're interested in basking in the awe-inspiring landscapes, try the 38-mile-long Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track , which in October became New Zealand’s 11th Great Walk; the three-day route offers magnificent views of Fiordland, as well as the Okaka and Port Craig backpacking lodges, which are communal mountaintop accommodations where you can crash in comfort after a long day's adventure (bookings not required). To learn more about Māori history, go to the South Island's West Coast to journey along the Pounamu Pathway , a driving route from Haast to Westport and creative project that brings Māori history to life with immersive and interconnected visitor centers. Of four in the works, the site at Māwhera/Greymouth was the first to open this December, with more to debut throughout 2024. The project was developed alongside the Ngāi Tahu tribe, the principal Māori tribe of the South Island; and Wētā Workshop, the visual effects studio behind the Lord of the Rings films.

Sri Lanka is easily one of our favorite destinations, with its rambling temple ruins, leafy tea plantations, and wide, golden beaches. For animal-loving travelers, the country has plenty of options for wildlife viewing. Both Udawalawe National Park and Gal Oya National Park contain hundreds of elephants , while Yala National Park is home to the world’s highest concentration of leopards. (Hot tip: If you're keen on visiting the leopards, check out a new Hilton resort next to the national park.)

Get a taste of the country’s natural beauty (with a hefty dose of luxury) at Tri , an 11-villa resort tucked away in a jungle on the shores of Koggala Lake. The rooms practically disappear into the lush landscapes thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows and leafy living walls, and private terraces and plunge pools add to the secluded appeal. If you manage to leave your villa, you can enjoy Sri Lankan cooking, sunset yoga, and spa treatments.

It should be said that Sri Lanka is re-emerging after a period of economic uncertainty and is experiencing something of a renaissance. Keep Sri Lanka on your radar throughout the year, but January is an especially refreshing time to visit: The weather in mid- to late-January is near perfect, with clear blue skies and temperatures hovering in the 70s and 80s.

Park City, Utah

Park City —along with the adjacent tony town of Deer Valley—is undeniably one of the United States's top winter sports destinations, with more-than-ample opportunities for skiing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding. After a long day spent on Utah’s famous powder, ski right into town to throw back whiskey at a saloon or go shopping for the perfect cowboy hat. And if you can, try to snag some tickets to the Sundance Film Festival (January 18–28, 2024), which draws filmmakers and enthusiasts from all over the world for screenings of the year’s upcoming indie flicks.

The St. Regis Deer Valley is exclusive and impressive any time of year, but the ski-in, ski-out hotel glows even brighter in the winter months. You can get full après service at the “ski beach,” a 3,000-square-foot terrace with chaise lounges and fire pits, then cozy up in the library or gaze at the stellar Wasatch Range from your room.

Dubai is a city of superlatives, so it should come as no surprise that the UAE hub has some of the best hotels and restaurants in the world—and there’s no better time to enjoy them all than in the relatively cool month of January. On the food front, Dubai claimed two spots on the 2023 iteration of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants : Orfali Bros Bistro, a popular neighborhood eatery run by three Syrian brothers; and Tresind Studio, a Michelin-starred Indian restaurant.

Then there are the hotels. Our most recent Hot List features two Dubai properties, each one perfectly representing the opulence that so defines this city. Atlantis the Royal is Dubai’s latest mega-resort, featuring a whopping 795 rooms and suites and some of the best service you’ll ever receive. For those seeking something quieter, Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa is a low-slung resort modeled after an Arabian fort.

Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is on the up-and-up (hence it's place on our list of the Best Places to Go in Africa in 2024 ). With the recent expansion of its airport in the capital of Freetown, more new routes to the rest of the continent (connectivity to perennial favorites Nigeria and South Africa are forthcoming), and a freshly-minted visa on arrival program for tourists, Sierra Leone is getting more spots on African itineraries. The country's tourism-focused vision for its future centers around the showcasing—and the important safeguarding—of its diverse wildlife. The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary opens in 2024 (keep an eye on the Tacugama website for details), spearheading a wave of eco-centric openings to come throughout the year. (Fun fact: Sierra Leone's national animal is the chimp.)

Can't wait to visit? The Jethel Garden Eco-Resort opens in December 2023 near Freetown at Tasso Island , an important stop on the country’s slave trade history route. Further south, Turtle Islands , a previously inaccessible chain of remote sandbar islands in the Atlantic, is adding new accommodations and better boat transfers with project Tomatribe, which includes glamping-style bell tents opening by January.

Melbourne, Australia

January is one of the best times to visit Australia (remember, the month marks the height of summer Down Under), especially if you head to Melbourne—the country’s undeniable cultural capital. Oz’s second city hosts the Australian Open each year, officially kicking off the Grand Slam season and giving fans a sense of which tennis players to watch in the year ehead. Tickets are reasonable and can be purchased online now .

Even if you aren’t into the courtside drama, Melbourne is well worth visiting this (or any) month. The food is arguably the best in the country, with restaurants focused on local produce and native Australian ingredients—and even fine dining establishments like Lûmé and Attica have distinctly laid-back vibes. Don’t sleep on the city’s coffee scene , either. Australia on the whole is known for taking coffee very seriously, but Melbourne brings that to a whole new level.

Nagano, Japan

January is peak ski season in Japan , with locals and travelers alike heading to the prime powder in and around Nagano . Hakuba, just outside of the city in the Japanese Alps, is one of the country’s best all-around ski destinations —many major resorts offer valley-wide tickets so you can hop around to different slopes within the area.

Japan’s version of après-ski is also worth traveling for, trading hotel hot tubs for traditional onsens . Ease any aches and pains after a day on the slopes at Shirahone Onsen, with its milky white water loaded with magnesium and calcium, then refuel with bowls of the buckwheat soba noodles that this part of Japan is known for. As for overnighting, book a room at the minimalist Hoshino Resorts KAI Alps , which has views of the Hida Mountains and the chance to snuggle up next to an irori (the local version of a campfire).

Turks and Caicos

Is there anything better than a winter escape to the Caribbean ? For January travel, we’re big fans of Turks and Caicos —the rainy season has passed, and it’s relatively easy to find non-stop flights to Provo from the US. Plus, the archipelago happens to have some of the best hotels and resorts in the Caribbean . You can’t go wrong with standbys like COMO Parrot Cay , a wellness-focused property set on its own private island; or the Shore Club , a Long Bay Beach favorite with accommodations ranging from standard rooms to six-bedroom villas.

If you’d rather try something new, we wholly recommend Rock House , a 2023 Hot List winner. This stylish cliffside resort opened in 2022 to much acclaim, with impeccable oceanfront villas, seafood restaurants, and views of Grace Bay and the Atlantic. The property is located along one of the largest barrier reefs in the world, and guests are invited to explore the waters via kayaks and see-through paddleboards—all complimentary, of course.

The Dolomites, Italy

The Dolomites are the cozy cousin to the Alps’ glitzy ski towns. The area’s powdery slopes can be accessed via the 86-mile Great Dolomites Road, one of the world’s most beautiful alpine drives . And, aside from the perfect skiing conditions , flights to this part of Italy are much cheaper in January than during other winter months. You can easily find round-trip tickets from New York to Venice for around $400, letting you save your money for ski passes and luxe hotels.

For both skiing and great stays, head to Cortina d’Ampezzo in the valley of the Boite River. The historic town is part of the massive Dolomiti Superski resort, connecting visitors to 750 miles of slopes and Europe’s largest network of cross-country trails. It also is home to Cristallo, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa , a lavish Belle Époque hotel with a massive spa, lively piano bar, and stunning views of the mountains from every guest room.

Accra, Ghana

Thanks to a slew of local tourism initiatives and non-stop flights from Washington, DC to Accra, visiting Ghana has never been easier. The small West African country has landscapes ranging from beaches along the coast to the savannah in the north, but our attention right now is focused on Accra , its buzzing capital city—one of our 24 Best Places to Go in 2024 . There's already lots to do in the city—sample some incredible Ghanaian cooking at places like Fulani Kitchen and The Mix Restaurant , then shop around town for custom-made clothing and artwork.

There are plenty of high-end hotels in Accra (Marriott and Kempinski both have outposts here), but consider heading to the Safari Valley Resort ecolodge in nearby Aburi to stay in a spacious cabin with views of Ghana’s verdant Okere District. (You might even spot some giraffes and zebras in their natural habitat.) The resort is fully devoted to sustainability with its solar panels, bio-digesters, and wastewater recycling plants, and its goal is to eventually be completely powered by renewable energy. If you need to stay in Accra though, check out the 145-room Hilton Accra Cantonments , the brand's first property in Ghana.

Baja California, Mexico

Whale spotting is why Baja California makes our list of the best places to travel in January, as humpbacks and grays migrate down to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez this month to mate and give birth. Instead of hitting well-known Cabo San Lucas, consider making the eastern tip of the peninsula your base: It’s wilder and far less manicured than the five-star hideaway to the south, with dirt roads, a slower pace, and superb beaches and fishing.

The region, known as the East Cape, has recently started to put an emphasis on high-end accommodation. One of the best new properties is the Four Seasons Costas Palmas , which debuted in 2020. The hotel feels like an undiscovered secret, surrounded by miles of secluded beaches and palm trees. All 141 rooms have Sea of Cortez views and feature custom-designed furniture and blankets made in Mexico City —some ground floor rooms even have private plunge pools.

Guatemala is one of Condé Nast Traveler 's Best Places to Go in Central & South America in 2024 for a variety of reasons—chief among them are fabulous new cruises with ancient ruin excursions and a burst of artsy openings throughout the country. In January 2024, National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions will launch a new itinerary from Belize to the jungle-shrouded Mayan ruins of Tikal in northern Guatemala, offering a perfect way to witness the fascinating blend of the country’s Indigenous and colonial histories, as well as its stunning natural beauty.

Want to put together your own Guatemalan journey? Consider a night or two in Flores, a small municipality in Guatemala that has been continuously occupied since pre-Hispanic times, as early as 900–600 BCE, making it one of the oldest cities in the world . It rests on the shores of—and on an island in—Lake Petén Itzá, the country’s third largest lake, and tourists often use Flores as a base from which to visit the archaeological sites at Tikal National Park.

Getting to Guatemala is also now easier than ever. Alaska begins year-round daily service to Guatemala City from Los Angeles in December 2023. And from its Atlanta hub, Delta is upping the frequency of winter flights to Guatemala.

If you want to start the year right, these are some of the top passport-fillers for January to inspire your travels or add to your bucket list. 

Where are the best places to visit in January for wildlife and nature?

Why now? Bask in near permanent daylight in this enormous white wilderness at the end of the world.

At the end of the world in Antarctica temperatures "soar" to freezing point (or a little above) and near-permanent daylight means endless, warm days (well, it’s all relative) for catching sight of the sprawling penguin colonies with their newly-hatched chicks, seal pups and whales as well as sailing between gargantuan icebergs. 

Why now? Track the world’s biggest primates in the dry(ish) season.

Perhaps a thousand or so endangered mountain gorillas survive worldwide, of which nearly half roam the dense forests of Uganda ’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . It’s an experience you’ll need to earn, tackling steep, muddy trails at altitudes up to 3000m (9483ft). But if you snag one of the limited permits available for each of the park’s 19 habituated families, the rewards are luminous. 

Chūbu, Japan

Why now? Discover a winter wonderland of steaming hot springs, traditional villages and snow sports.

Winter’s a magical time to explore the historic settlements of Japan 's central Honshu region, when snow dusts temples, castles and traditional wooden houses. Outside of the ski resorts, crowds thin after the late-December holidays and before cherry-blossom season. In the Japanese Alps, “snow monkeys” (Japanese macaques) soak in hot springs near Yudanaka. 

Where are the best places to visit in January for food and culture?

Sydney, Australia

Why now: For endless cultural experiences in the heat of the summer. 

For an alternative to the seasonal celebrations, head to Australia’s largest city for the Sydney Festival, an eclectic three-week showcase of burlesque acts, circus and dance performances, art installations and family activities. 

Liguria, Italy

Why now? Tramp snowy paths and munch fabulous food in the quietest season.

In winter in the Ligurian Alps, wonderfully crisp air and snowy forest trails lure snowshoers to Aveto and Antola natural regional parks and yet-more-rugged Beigua Geopark, where snowshoe hire is available and marked circular trails offer sea views. All are within touching distance of regional capital Genoa , deliciously quiet in January yet as tasty as ever with regional delicacies. 

Austin, Texas, USA

Why now? Forage and feast from food trucks in the mild Texas January.

Long famed for its barbecue and Tex-Mex, today there’s a world of cuisines to discover in Austin , from American regional classics – Philly cheesesteaks, Cajun jambalaya, fried chicken – to dishes from all corners of the globe: pick up West African jollof rice, Syrian shawarma, Venezuelan arepas, and Thai Tom Kha soup. Canary Islands

Why now? Escape the winter with a European island break. 

Escape the Northern Hemisphere’s winter climes with a surf break under the sunny skies of the Canary Islands . Kitesurfers and windsurfers are also spoilt for wave-riding hotspots; and land-lovers can simply kick back on the golden shores or hike or cycle one of the region's otherworldly volcanic landscapes.

Arizona and Utah, USA

Why now? Snap snow-dusted canyons, buttes and mesas free from crowds.

The red-rock ravines and outcrops of the region straddling the Utah and Arizona borders look even more delectable with a topping of snow – and in January you’ll share these wonders with far fewer people. Make no mistake, you’ll need to wrap up warm: temperatures dip well below freezing. But don the right clothes and boots (better still, snowshoes), and you’ll discover dramatic landscapes made even more magical in the absence of crowds.

South Island, New Zealand

Why now? To take an epic summer road trip in January. 

Over in New Zealand , lap up some breathtaking scenery on a road trip through some of the South Island ’s most iconic coastal landscapes. The long summer days will give you plenty of time to explore. 

Where are the best places to visit in January for relaxation?

Budapest, Hungary 

Why now? To dip into warm waters to escape the European chill. 

When the climate turns cold in the Northern Hemisphere, Budapest ’s hot springs and thermal baths are a great way to escape the chill and give yourself some much needed TLC in one fell swoop.

Why now? Chill in a quieter corner of the Caribbean.

Few travelers heading to the Caribbean find their way to long, skinny little Anguilla , which remains determinedly low-key and relatively undeveloped. But it boasts all the ingredients of the Caribbean dream: friendly folk, an uplifting reggae soundtrack and some of the region’s most beautiful palm-fringed beaches, notably lively Shoal Bay on the north coast and sleepier Rendezvous Bay in the south. 

Kerala, India

Why now? Find your inner glow on a winter sun and yoga break in “God’s own country.”

Over the past couple of decades, the beaches of Varkala and Kovalam have morphed from the peaceful preserves of fishermen and Hindu devotees into backpacker hangouts and on into full blown resorts studded with exclusive hotels. But with serene stretches of sand still to be found here and there in Kerala , you can take your pick of the trance parties, hot hotels and restful homestays and yoga retreats. 

Southern Thailand

Why now? Find peaceful beaches and superb snorkeling and diving in the dry season.

Phuket, Krabi and Ko Phi-Phi have long been popular sun-sea-sand destinations, particularly during the European winter. Head further south, though, to find lesser-known corners. The Trang Islands – Ko Kradan and craggy Ko Muk – have escaped large-scale development, despite their gleaming beaches, pellucid waters and the latter’s beautiful Tham Morakot (Emerald Cave). Keep going to Tarutao National Marine Park, an archipelago of 51 islands just north of the Malay border.

New year, new adventure

What better way to jump head-first into a new year than to be knee-deep in the valleys of an Icelandic glacier, up to your ears in Tanzanian shrubbery, or daintily dipping a toe into the warm water of the Pacific Ocean? However you choose to slide into 2025, we’re here to make it happen.

It may be wintertime, but  Vietnam  isn’t your typical winter destination. On every leg of your journey, you’ll be enveloped in colour . From roadside stalls overflowing with produce to the towering greenery-enshrouded limestone cliffs of Halong Bay and never-ending fields of rice, Vietnam is a warm burst of life and a perfect place to start a new year.

In 2025, you can also celebrate not one but two New Year’s celebrations, with the Lunar New Year, Tết, celebrations taking place on January 29.

2. East Africa

Why go? Hot and dry weather make great conditions for wildlife spotting Temperature: 25ºC (77ºF) high, 13ºC (55ºF) low Season: hot and dry

Start your year scouring the Serengeti in an overland vehicle, keeping a watchful eye for the big 5 (and the still-impressive other hundred species who reside there).

East Africa is an adventurer’s dream and the weather this month makes it perfect for days spent immersed in mighty landscapes like the Usambara Mountains and Ngorongoro Crater, watching for wildlife and meeting incredible people like the Maasai warriors. It’s not a bad way to start a year (if we say so ourselves).

Why go? Wintery delights, Icelandic sights and northern lights Temperature: 3ºC (37ºF) high, -3ºC (27ºF) low Season: winter

Ever gone hunting for the northern lights ? After days spent hopping between ice caps, grand waterfalls, hot springs and gothic-looking beaches, turn your gaze skyward and cross your fingers for the spectacle of the aurora borealis.

Long hours of darkness coupled with colder January temperatures mean that there is a strong chance to spot the often-elusive magic ligh t show in  Iceland  this month. Like any natural sighting, it can never be fully guaranteed, but paired with the other natural phenomena of Iceland…, you’re not likely to leave disappointed.

This month is the coolest you’ll be able to experience Egypt as moderate temperatures and sunny weather combine for an ideal Egypt trip. It can get busy at the major sites this month, but to us, that means escaping the hubbub on a felucca down the Nile to dine with a local Nubian family in their home – not something everyone will be doing (we can assure you).

So, if stepping into ancient pyramids and marvelling at the kingdom of pharaohs is high on your bucket list but hot weather isn’t… introducing Egypt in January.

5. Galapagos

Why go? Nesting sea turtles and warm waters Temperature: 29ºC (84ºF) high, 21ºC (70ºF) low Season: wet and warm

Still looking for inspiration? January in the Galapagos Islands has that in spades. Swim over coral reefs with sea lions, marvel at the creatures who inspired the theory of evolution, watch as birds perform aerial acrobatics, hike up volcanoes then finish it off by relaxing on the beach. Unless you’d prefer to be searching the sand for nesting sea turtles who begin laying their eggs this month – an experience a little hard to replicate elsewhere.

While the northern hemisphere is well into its winter, Australia is as hot as it gets in January. Far north regions will be in a wet season, but for the rest of the country, it’s all summer down under. On the east coast, you’ve got Sydney Harbour shimmering, the Great Barrier Reef thriving and enough beaches to last you the year. Over in the west, the quokkas of Rottnest Island are bringing in the smiles, while south, Tasmania is a treat for all things nature.

Where to travel in January

As the new year begins, travel is firmly on the radar and the options are countless. It’s a great month either to explore warmer climes or take note of the beauty to be found on your doorstep.

With much of the Northern Hemisphere hunkering down, January is one of the best months to strike out for greener pastures. Prices deliciously drop after the pocket-draining holiday season and crowds thin.  

This month, the cooler climes aren’t just dark and dreary. The Northern Lights paint Nordic skies and skiers slide across cotton-white slopes in spots like The Alps, Canada and the USA. The big freeze also makes for a dreamy European city escape with destinations such as Prague, Vienna and Budapest ideal for snow-dusted wanderings on cobblestoned streets.

But if you want to beat the winter blues with more vitamin D, Patagonia is a hiker’s playground, while the Caribbean and Central America are warm and mostly dry with watery activities like scuba diving and dolphin-spotting. Countries such as South Africa, New Zealand and Australia can become sweltering in high summer, but much of southeast Asia (particularly Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia) sunbathes comfortably beneath a dome of blue sky.

1. Ethiopia

The stifling centigrade eases enough in winter to explore Earth’s most extraterrestrial corner. Northern Ethiopia’s desolate Danakil Depression is one of the driest, hottest and lowest places on the planet, made up of salt lakes, neon yellow acidic springs, lava lakes and an outsize proportion of Africa’s active volcanoes. As the rains abate this month, previously mud-caked roads south to the remote Omo Valley become accessible again. Book a responsible tour with a local guide to visit these vast wetlands, home to many ethnic tribes.

Two of Ethiopia’s most important religious festivals are on this month’s calendar: Ethiopian Christmas and Timkat, an Orthodox Christian celebration that takes place from January 19-20 each year. Celebrating Christ’s baptism in the River Jordan, locals across the land submerge themselves in sacred pools. There are also feasts, street parties and processions of pilgrims. Holy events can be witnessed in Gondar, home to a grand 17th-century palace, and spiritual Lalibela, where nearly a dozen mediaeval churches are carved out of volcanic rock.

Sustainable tip:   Around a third of Ethiopian households live below the poverty line, so a great way to support locals is by booking community-based tours. Small group SimienEcoTours’ options include trekking into the Lasta Mountains and staying in community lodges on the way, while Yared Tour & Travel have coffee-themed trips to the southwest, which include coffee ceremonies with locals.

2. Utah, USA

Catch a feature flick at America’s largest independent film festival. Sundance was founded in 1978 to showcase indie filmmakers and has since ballooned into an 10-day celebration of cinematic storytelling. Each January, the festival sprawls across snow-capped Park City, high in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. Many iconic filmmakers have early roots in Sundance, including Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson.

When you’ve caught up on the year’s most anticipated movies, stretch your legs on the slopes. Utah is a winter sport wonderland with frequent fresh dustings across its craggy mountain ranges. Snowboard straight down to Main Street from Park City Mountain Resort or head to skiers-only Deer Valley Resort. Pow Mow (Powder Mountain), meanwhile, is the spot for night riding and remote snowcat skiing across 1,200 acres of off-piste powder.

Sustainable tip:   Go green by hopping on one of the city’s complimentary zero-emission electric buses and supporting shops that stock locally made products. Browse cosmetics and glass art at Made in Park City or bourbon barrel-aged chocolate at small-batch maker Ritual . More locally owned pit stops can be found on Visit Park City’s website .

3. Somerset, England

Migrate alongside millions of starlings to Somerset this winter. Against crisp January skies, the swooping murmuration of birds is best witnessed in the Somerset Levels, an expanse of ancient lowlands that unfurl between the Quantock and Mendip Hills. Watch the aerial dance at the atmospheric Avalon Marshes or Ham Wall’s wetlands to witness the starlings simultaneously erupt from their roosting reedbeds at dawn and coalesce in clouds at dusk as birds of prey twist around them. Ring RSPB’s starling hotline for hot tips on where to spot the spectacle.

Once suitably frost-bitten, hang your woolly hat in Somerset’s largest city. Bath has drawn people to its healing hot springs since Roman times. Take to the mineral-rich waters at Thermae Bath Spa’s year-round rooftop pool, where views stretch across the golden city’s grand facades and rising hills as sultry fingers of steam rise from the water’s surface. If you prefer a more frigid dip, Britain’s oldest lido reopened in late 2022 and offers cold-water swimming sessions throughout winter.

Sustainable tip:   Exmoor National Park was Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve. Light pollution affects animals’ circadian rhythms, migration patterns and predator-prey relationships. By protecting biodiversity and conserving natural habitats, this vast expanse of open moorland, woods and coastline in Somerset and Devon remains an important ecosystem.

4. San Sebastián, Spain

This Basque coastal city may be a summertime hotspot for surf and sand, but San Sebastián in the off-season is just as alluring: the weather is mild, hotels are at their most affordable, its mega-concentration of Michelin star restaurants often have availability and one of the city’s biggest cultural events is on the calendar.

Take to the streets on January 20 for the eponymous San Sebastián Day , the city’s most anticipated festival. The citywide celebration includes traditional Basque meals, a jubilant gathering in Plaza de la Constitución to raise the flag and tamborradas .   These drum parades involve thousands of drummers booming energetically through cobbled streets.

Keep the party going with a glass of strong stuff. January is the start of the area’s cider season. Head to a cider house, where tradition dictates filling up a glass at a freshly tapped barrel with the cloudy, dry tipple. Pair it with local dishes like salt cod omelette and Basque steak.

Sustainable tip:   San Sebastián is laced with bidegorri (bike lanes), making it ideal for exploring on two wheels. It’s also extremely walkable, with many of the city’s main attractions reached via a 15-30 minute flat stroll underfoot. Book a free daily small group walking tour or an e-bike excursion with Go Local , who run sustainable tours that support the local economy.

5. Northeast China

An ethereal world of ice emerges on the banks of the Songhua River each winter. Before it melts, chill out at the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival , the largest of its kind, open annually in northeast China from late-December to February. This crystalline city is replete with soaring snow sculptures, ice lanterns and illuminated full-size buildings crafted from thick blocks of ice.

Further frozen features can be found just south of Harbin in Jilin City, where trees are encased with a delicate film of rime each winter. Considered one of the four natural wonders of China, these trees lining the misty Songhua River become wrapped in filigrees of frost, transforming their branches into creamy clouds of ice. The city celebrates the phenomenon with the annual Rime Ice and Snow Festival each January with fireworks, ice skating and illuminated lanterns that float dreamily down the river by nightfall.

Sustainable tip:   China’s rapidly expanding railway network added a new high-speed electric train from Beijing to Harbin in 2021. The 217mph bullet train is designed to operate at temperatures as low as -40C in China’s frozen north. The revolutionary train has a lightweight aluminium alloy body and a streamlined low-resistance design to help decrease energy consumption.

Yes, we love making New Year’s resolutions, too—only to fail to follow through before the month is out. Why not make yourself a promise that you’ll find easy to keep?

Let’s travel more in 2024, compensating with gusto for the skipped trips of the past few years. We’ve got some suggestions to ignite your wanderlust, whether it’s an alfresco rave in subzero temperatures or a canny way to head out on safari and sidestep the usual crowds.

Here are the 10 best places to travel in January.

1. Montreal, Canada

January is great for: subzero roller-discos

Are you ready to rave? Come with an open mind and a couple of puffer jackets to celebrate Igloofest . The 16th edition of the party runs from January 18 to February 10 in the Old Port of Montreal , celebrating electronic music of all kinds from around the world. This year the organizers are expanding their offshoot Igloofête from one Saturday afternoon to four, with a free concert from 1 to 6 p.m. and programming that stretches beyond dance music; it’s intended to be family friendly, too.

If you need a little downtime from the DJs, head to the free-to-access Fête des Neiges de Montréal in Parc Jean-Drapeau. It takes place on winter weekends and includes classic activities like ice skating and ice carving, as well as skiing and snowboarding lessons for beginners.

Where to stay

This 177-room property , part of Hyatt’s funky, affordable Centric brand, is right on the St. Lawrence river in the heart of Old Town; ask for a room on one of the higher floors for superb views out across the city.

How to get to Montreal

Air Canada connects YUL with several U.S. cities, including Denver, Chicago, and New Orleans, while Canadian low-cost carrier Lynx has service to Las Vegas. The legacy U.S. carriers all operate flights there from their major hubs.

Festival winners in 2023 included The Stroll , a documentary about trans sex workers in Manhattan, and A Thousand and One , which took the top prize and was the debut project from female writer-director A.V. Rockwell.

2. Park City, Utah

January is great for: bragging rights that you saw the first screening of a future Oscar winner

The Sundance Film Festival remains the ultimate endorsement for indie outfits, a place which can turn a movie into a phenomenon. This year’s fest kicks off on January 18 and is the 40th edition since its founding by heartthrob turned entrepreneur Robert Redford; it’s also the first under new director Eugene Hernandez, best known before as the cofounder of Indiewire and a prominent LGBTQ journalist in the entertainment field.

The lineup, which will include almost 100 feature films plus 60 or more shorts, will be shown at various venues around town; the event climaxes with the awards show, this year held on January 26.

Hotel capacity downtown is notoriously tight during the fest, so instead opt for a ski resort nearby like the Westgate Park City , a 10-minute drive or so. It has four-bedroom loft rooms, which sleep 16 and so can keep costs manageable for group trips.

How to get to Park City

The best option is flying into Salt Lake City, 30 miles away. It’s one of Delta’s main hubs, the carrier offers direct flights to countless cities across the country.

If you’d like to ski down the Dolomites as part of the International Dolomites Run, it’ll cost 100 euros to enter.

3. The Dolomites

January is great for: testing your ski mettle in a series of ferocious races

This month, come to the mountains to try your hand at the International Dolomites Run, which has taken place here for more than five decades just over the border from Italy in Lienz, Austria. It’s open to both pro and amateur skiers, and there are six different races on the three days from January 19.

Last year, it introduced a new EasyRace for beginner skiers and those with physical challenges as a gesture of inclusiveness, but the focus here is really on elite sportsmanship: The event’s anchor is the marathon on Sunday morning known as the Dolomitenlauf . It’s run over two distances, 20 km and 42 km—last year, the latter was won by Italian Mario Brigadoi (whose day job is as a chimney sweep) with a time of just over two hours.

The aptly named Forestis is a four-year-old, 62-room resort in the heart of the Italian Dolomites. The ski-in, ski-out property has panoramic views of the mountains, plus a rooftop bar that, at 5,900 feet above sea level, is one of the highest in the world.

How to get to the Dolomites

The smartest service to Milan is on Emirates from JFK, which is usually far cheaper than any rivals because it’s a Fifth Freedom flight . From there, one of Italy’s surprisingly efficient trains will quickly whisk you to the Dolomites from the Italian side.

Costa Rica has become a shorthand for sustainable tourism in Central America, but it’s not the only destination that outdoorsy enthusiasts should consider in the region.

4. Emerald Coast, Nicaragua

January is great for: an eco-adventure without the crowds

Nicaragua is quietly emerging as a less trafficked alternative with equally impressive natural wonders but far fewer crowds. And in January, which averages just one day of rain and consistently sees temperature in the 80s, it’s even more appealing to visit.

The country’s standout is the Emerald Coast, a 30-mile stretch of Pacific shoreline and dry tropical forest. There are more than 300 days of offshore winds here year-round, and sites like Popoyo Beach have become a haven for extreme wave-chasers. They were the only tourists until a decade or so ago, when new upscale accommodations started luring barefoot luxe types to the region.

Come now for horseback riding on the beach, and hike through the forest; look for the darting brilliance of the guardabarranco, Nicaragua’s national bird.

After a six-year closure, the Mukul Resort reopens this month under the guidance of Don Carlos Pellas, the founder of Flor de Caña rum (hence the tasting experiences you can book, too). The 12 villas here each have their own private pools and are decorated with carved teak tables and seashell chandeliers made by local craftspeople.

How to get to the Emerald Coast

Managua is connected to Miami, Houston, and Fort Lauderdale with nonstop flights on United and American. From there, it’s a short flight down to ECI, the airport servicing the Emerald Coast, or about a two-hour drive.

5. Republic of the Congo

January is great for: trekking in a near virgin forest

In 1935, Odzala-Kokoua National Park was created; it was one of Africa’s first and now stretches over more than 5,200 miles of rainforest in the central African country of the Congo. It’s an overlooked gem, which usually attracts a few hundred visitors each year at most—in part, likely because the country is often confused with its more conflict-riddled neighbor, the DRC. Congo is only ranked at level 2 , or exercise increased caution, on the four-stage travel advisories issued by the U.S. State Department, which makes it a viable, largely safe destination for adventurous travelers, particularly those keen to see mountain gorillas.

The only private operator in the park is Kamba, run by a wealthy German philanthropist, Sabine Plattner, and it’s smartest to visit under its auspices. Activities here include trekking for western lowland primates, which are smaller and lighter in color than the better known mountain gorilla. (There are almost 60 groups of them nearby). The vegetation here is at its lushest now amid the downpours of the rainy season.

Kamba’s lodges , which first opened in 2012, sit in spectacular rainforest locations inside the Odzala-Kokoua National Park. The pick of the bunch is the six-bungalow Nagaga Lodge, set deep in a nearly inaccessible green space, which allows visits to gorillas in near-undisturbed habitats.

How to get to the Republic of the Congo

Maya-Maya Airport, or BZV, in the capital, Brazzaville, has no direct nonstop service from the USA. The best connecting options are Air France, via Paris, which flies from cities including Detroit and Denver, or Ethiopian via Addis Ababa, which serves Atlanta, Chicago, and New York–JFK among others. It’s a 90-minute puddle jumper flight from BZV to the park.

St. Croix’s celebrations are a chance to highlight the cultural heritage of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, which were sold to the United States for $25 million in 1917.

6. St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

January is great for: squeezing a few extra days out of Christmas

Epiphany marks the climax of the month-long Crucian Christmas Festival, when a parade of masqueraders will snake through the streets of Christiansted and Frederiksted on St. Croix, the largest island in the USVI cluster . Before that, there’s also the J’Ouvert food fair and Village Nights, when local and international music acts will perform; this year’s headliner is Afrobeats artist Davido from Nigeria, though expect the programming to be heavy on soca and local acts.

Come to St. Croix now and it retains a less frenzied feel than other hustle-driven U.S. Virgin Islands, which can feel thronged with cruise ship passengers. And if your passport has been mired in bureaucracy as you’ve tried to renew it, don’t fret—remember you can use a state-issued ID for a visit.

This huge resort , spread over 340 acres and overlooking Christiansted harbor, is owned and operated by an island family; it has a vast roster of never-need-to-leave amenities, including eight tennis courts, two pools, and its own 18-hole golf course.

How to get to U.S. Virgin Islands

American Airlines is usually the easiest way to reach the Caribbean, and St. Croix is no exception—there’s nonstop service from both MIA and CLT. But you can also get direct service from FLL on Spirit and a Delta plane from ATL.

In January, Fargo’s average high is around 16 degrees Fahrenheit.

7. Fargo, North Dakota

January is great for: realizing it isn’t cold—it’s cool

For six weeks starting on January 13, locals make the most of their maximum winter via the Frostival , a wittily named bash that its organizers hope will make everyone think “cold is cool.”

The programming stretches to more than 40 events, but over the first two weeks it includes everything from cardboard sled races down Mickelson Sledding Hill (bring your own box) to family-friendly s’mores evenings at local ice rinks and a weekend of 10-minute plays. Beyond the Wonderland is a particular highlight: Teams come to build snow forts and then test their strength via a subsequent snowball fight, with a celebratory DJ-driven after-party. There’s a snow sculpture contest at Viking Ship Park and even a candlelit trail walk at night—bundle up especially warm—to go star spotting and gorge on hot dogs and chocolate.

This 40-room boutique hotel , which opened in the summer, is a kitschy joy, with each of its rooms themed around a different beer from the Drekker Brewing Company, which has an event space below. Expect warehouse chic–style rooms, each with graffiti splattered walls and neon signage.

How to get to Fargo

Delta offers service from Minneapolis, while Allegiant connects with the sunbelt, including Orlando and Tampa, as well as Las Vegas.

8. New Orleans, Louisiana

January is great for: previewing the Mardi Gras mayhem at a leisurely pace

Sneak into the Big Easy this month for a chance to sample the frenzied glamour of Mardi Gras without the crowds. Epiphany, or January 6, is when locals switch their excuse to party from Christmas to Easter, and Mardi Gras begins. The king cakes will appear drizzled in Day-Glo frosting and with one charm inside; if you snare the figurine, said to represent Jesus, you’re sure of good luck for the year.

There’s a parade to celebrate Epiphany here, of course, kicking off Carnival season at 7 p.m. in the French Quarter. It’s a relatively new tradition, barely 15 years old, but well attended nonetheless. The city rolls out a series of smaller bashes throughout the month, too, so you can enjoy the Mardi Gras vibe without the madness that will descend later (this year, it’s February 13). Take your pick per your interests: January 20 is the date for the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus nerd parade, while the female-skewing Krewe Boheme lets the bon temps rouler on January 26.

The 83-room building opened three years ago in what was once a sugar refining warehouse in the French Quarter (hence it doesn’t offer suites, but “sweets”). Come for a drink on the rooftop to avoid the crowds in the streets nearby.

How to get to New Orleans

MSY underwent a $1.3 billion overhaul four years ago that made it a joy to use—and it’s connected with direct flights to most major metro hubs, including Philadelphia and Las Vegas.

9. French Polynesia

January is great for: cruising ’round hard-to-reach atolls

French Polynesia ’s islands are scattered confetti-style across more than 1,200 miles of sea in the South Pacific; the distances between them make sailing the best (and most enjoyable) way to see most of them. Variety Cruise itineraries unlock many of the hardest-to-reach spots thanks to the small boats it operates.

The new itineraries take in islands like Raiatea—where you can pick up superb locally grown vanilla—as well as diving hot spot Rangiroa. The highlight, though, is Makatea . The coral atoll was once aggressively mined for phosphates, leaving its surface pock-marked with hand-dug holes. Now, its straight white cliffs draw climbers where barely 100 people live full-time.

Variety ‘s two-masted, 49-person motor sailer Panorama II is only 164 feet long but incorporates an outdoor sundeck, a lounge, and a library.

How to get to French Polynesia

For Californians, the eight-or-so-hour flight is surprisingly handy. There’s service from LAX to the main island on Delta, Air France, and Air Tahiti Nui; United and Gallic low-cost carrier French Bee operate nonstop from SFO. Air Tahiti Nui also runs to Seattle.

January is a glorious time to explore, when the roads will be quieter and the weather more dramatic—expect a chance to really embrace the wilderness in Ireland.

10. Western Ireland

January is great for: roaming around the entire coast

The Wild Atlantic Way brings together more than 1,600 miles of scenic roads and trails around Ireland ’s ruggedly gorgeous west coast. It runs from the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal until it terminates in County Cork in the charming town of Kinsale.

More than 150 locations along the way are signposted as noteworthy or worthwhile, but only 15 are marked as Signature Discovery Points. These are the unmissables en route; they include the UNESCO-endorsed Cliffs of Moher and the 700-plus-foot tranches of rock that tumble into the Atlantic in County Clare.

Traveling the entire route at a leisurely pace would likely take around four weeks, but you can easily carve out a section to enjoy for a few days.

Indulge your inner aristocrat with a night or two at one of Ireland’s top luxury hotels that’s now owned by racehorse magnate J.P. McManus. He sunk a chunk of his fortune into upgrading the 1832 building into a 103-room hideaway that’s anchored by its own Michelin-starred restaurant, the Oak Room .

Shannon Airport is the international hub for the west coast, with direct nonstop flights from there on Aer Lingus to both Boston and NYC–JFK.

January can feel like the gloomiest month in the calendar, but it’s an amazing time to travel with something for everyone from snow to sun or even a safari. Start the New Year in style with a trip to one of the best places to travel in January.

In the US and Europe, cold weather makes it a great time to visit ski resorts, go hiking, or experience the frozen wildernesses. While in Central and Southern America, the weather is warm and it’s much quieter than later in the year. As well as lots of snow, Sun Valley has history. It’s known as America’s first destination ski resort thanks to it being the first to open a chairlift, in 1936. Nearly 100 years later, it’s still my favorite US ski resort. Base yourself in the postcard-perfect town of Ketchum, charming but sophisticated as all the best mountain resorts are, its hotels, restaurants , and bars are après ski central.

Above it, a magic mix of terrains spread across two towering peaks. The gentle slopes of Dollar Mountain are ideal for kids and beginners to find their snow legs. If you are a serious skier, try out Bald Mountain , affectionately called Baldy. As famed for its lack of lift lines as it is for its perfect pitch, Blady has 65 individual runs and endless opportunities for trail riding. A nirvana for snow lovers.

While you’re there find the quiet nook over Seattle Ridge on Baldy’s southern slope. Known as the Sunrise Zone, it opened in 2021 adding 380 acres of terrain filled with perfectly spaced firs and steep chutes. Just watch out for powder pockets and serious rock drops.

2. Montgomery, Alabama

• Why visit in January? Celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

On the third Monday of each January, Martin Luther King Jr Day is celebrated . In 2024, that Monday falls on the same date as MLK’s actual birthday – January 15th. MLK was the minister of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery and it was here that he led the bus boycott, fighting racial segregation following Rosa Parks’ heroic actions in 1955. 

His legacy lives on in Montgomery, not least thanks to the Equal Justice Initiative , which runs three powerful experiences here. The Legacy Museum takes visitors through 400 years of US history through the lens of racial segregation, enslavement, and terrorism. 

The National Memorial for Peace and Justice occupies a six-acre area on a hilltop overlooking Montgomery. Deeply sobering, Then there is the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park . This 17-acre site celebrates the courage and resilience of those enslaved, built on the banks of the Alabama River. An immersive journey into the lives of enslaved people, it features poignant stories, original dwellings, and indigenous art.

3. Death Valley, California

January is a good time to visit Death Valley and avoid the extreme heat of the valley experiences in the summer. America’s largest national park (outside of Alaska) at more than 5,300 square miles offers plenty to explore. And it’s not just hellish, barren, lunar-like landscapes – Desolation Canyon, anyone?

Death Valley is alive with nature and experiences. Badwater Basin salt flats should be your first stop , the lowest point on the continent at 282 feet below sea level. Make sure to look high up east to the cliffs of the Black Mountains for a sign showing the sea level. To the west, Telescope Peak towers more than two miles above you.

Among the sand dunes, mountains, and salt flats, you’ll also find oases. Hidden in an unassuming canyon, Darwin Falls is a rare year-round waterfall in Death Valley. A haven for life, it teems with ferns and cattails, tree frogs and toads, and bighorn sheep.

4. San Antonio, Texas

The oldest of Texas’ major cities, San Antonio typically confronts the New Year with a can-do attitude. Events happen all month long , from food fares to sporting contests. It’s not even that cold, with temperatures lingering in the mid-60s. Walking and exploring its colonial streets, it almost feels like spring. 

If you’re visiting in the first week of January, you can enjoy the best of the city’s famed River Walk . With holiday season lights staying up until January 7th, it’s the best time to see them minus the Christmas crowds. Football fans should take a day out on January 6 for All-American Bowl Day. Grab a cold beer and hot dog to watch high school all-stars compete in a game that can decide NFL futures.

Refuel with some epic deals during restaurant week . Running January 15-27, it’s actually more like two weeks of delicious eatin’ and overindulgin’ (this is Texas, after all). Many of the city’s top restaurants offer prix fixe brunches, lunches, and dinners for budgets from $25 to $55.

Best places to travel in January for winter sports

5. arctic circle, sweden.

• Why visit in January? Snowboarding without the crowds.

In the frozen wilderness of Europe’s far north, adventure awaits. The icy January landscapes of Sweden are a playground for snowbound fun without crowds. Try snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing, reindeer and dog sledding, ice fishing and, if you’re particularly brave, ice diving.

For something special, head to Uddjaure Lake and try your hand at ice driving. From January 6 until late March, Lapland Ice Driving turns the lake’s vast frozen surface into the world’s best racetrack. Or rather, racetracks – no fewer than 13, including five full-scale exact replica Formula One circuits. Hop in one of the 30 supercars available and test your skills on the frozen equivalent of the Nürburgring.

Continue the lake theme with a stay at the wild and extraordinary Arctic Bath , a few hours’ drive east. Set in an otherworldly landscape, this floating spa has to be seen to be believed. You’ll need to fly into nearby Luleå and rent a car to get around but in landscapes like these, the journey is half the fun.

6. Harbin, China

For a one-of-a-kind winter vacation, Harbin in China is your place. Each January the capital of China’s northernmost province hosts the world’s largest ice and snow festival .

Kicking off on January 5th, this is ice sculpting on an unimaginable scale. Explore lifesize castles, an island of giant sculptures, ice slides, and a towering Ferris Wheel where you can view it all. Elsewhere parks across the city freeze into extraordinary works of ice-bound art. January is the best time to visit too, as crowds don’t appear until February for the Chinese Spring Festival .

While you’re there, take the opportunity to dive into the local culinary scene , a mix of Russian, Mongolian, and northern Chinese cuisine. Hotpots and dumplings, stewed, smoked, and pickled, all warming and delicious are extra appealing when served in a restaurant made of ice.

For some classic winter sports, 90 minutes on the bullet train will take you to the Yabuli ski area, China’s biggest ski resort. Spread across three mountains and multiple small resorts, its 49 trails are blessed with consistently great snow. Hotels do vary in quality, for somewhere with good facilities stay at Club Med Yabuli .

7. Zermatt, Switzerland

Perhaps the greatest of Switzerland ’s many epic ski resorts, Zermatt is a mecca for high adventure and high society. It’s also high altitude; Switzerland’s loftiest resort is only accessible by train so there are, blissfully, no cars.

Adventurers come for its skiing and snowboarding as well as the Matterhorn, Europe’s most iconic and recognizable peak. On the Matterhorn, you can explore its trails, climb its sheer faces, and jump off it if you’re really wild. Or just admire it from afar with a mulled wine at one of the gorgeous mountain huts on the surrounding slopes.

Outside of sports, decades of rich and famous visitors have cultivated an aura of glamor including high-end shopping, boutique hotels , Michelin star restaurants (book way in advance), and fantastic après ski. Prices can be high but are tempered by the magical atmosphere and views.

The archetypal ‘must-do’ when visiting is a trip on the mountain train up to the summit of the Gornergrat . At 10,000 feet, the destination is spectacular but it’s the ride that will take your breath away. Crushingly scenic, it winds over 33 minutes through some of Switzerland’s most stunning panoramas.

Long, narrow, and fringed by two extraordinary coastlines, what Panama lacks in facilities it makes up for in beauty. Start your trip in the capital city which has enough to entertain for a short stay. Do as most visitors do and visit Casco Viejo. The old quarter and one-time gangland is now a thriving tourist district. Packed with great restaurants, bars, and boutique hotels spilling from shabby chic colonial houses.

The route guides you through huge arid grasslands and steppes and past precipitous Andean peaks. Keep an eye out for the granite monolith of Monte Fitz Roy, not that it’s easy to miss. 

January conditions are perfect to get out amongst it all. Kayak the lakes of Los Glaciares National Park. Boat to the Perito Moreno Glacier for an unnervingly up-close encounter and if you can face the trip, commit to heading south for Ushuaia. The world’s southernmost city is the perfect launch point for expeditions into the Tierra del Fuego. Or even more spectacular, for ocean journeys south deep into the Antarctic.

The month is a hard one for many, with all the dark evenings and cold weather, so finding a warmer patch of the world to soak up some sun, or exploring a dazzlingly wintery getaway spot couldn’t hurt. Best places to visit in January

1.  melbourne.

Live in the Northern Hemisphere? Cancel winter’s contract and go south to Melbourne, Australia, where it’s summer. Some people say Melbourne is Australia’s coolest city—and those people are entirely correct (soz, Sydney: take solace with that massive bridge and those lovely beaches). In a more literal sense, the Victorian capital is also warm, especially in January. Expect t-shirt weather, and don’t miss the Big Three: coffee, street art and St Kilda.

2.  Iceland

Another one where blue skies aren’t exactly guaranteed—though if you’re lucky, they might turn green once night falls. We are, of course, talking about the ethereal Northern Lights, which flood Iceland’s skies with their bewitching colours in January (and the rest of winter). Even if the clouds prove stubborn, there’s more than enough on the ground to keep you busy: majestic waterfalls, exploding geysers, pristine glaciers, and scenery that looks like a sci-fi movie set.

3.  Cape Town

Basking in the shadow of Table Mountain and perched overlooking the gorgeous Atlantic coast, South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ is a cracking place to kick the seasonal blues. From lazily perusing the boho-chic Kalk Bay area or filling your boots at the brand-new Time Out Market to braving the dazzling heights of the ‘Boomslang’ at Kirstenbosch botanical gardens, this jewel of a city will have an enticing activity to keep you entertained in January.

4.  Shetland, Scotland

You know at the top how we said something about blue skies? Yeah, well, that doesn’t apply here (your extremities might go blue, though!). If a holiday on a remote, rocky, rain-lashed island 200km north of northern  Scotland  in the North Sea sounds like your idea of something that would go quickly south, hear us out. There is a Viking Festival in January. A. Viking. Festival. It’s called Up Helly Aa, and while we’re slightly crushed we can’t yet speak from firsthand experience, it looks absolutely incredible.

5.  Brazil

If you’ve ever glanced at a map of the world, you may have noticed Brazil is rather on the large side, meaning the kinds of temperatures you experience will depend on which part you visit. January is generally a safe bet, with an average mercury reading of 27C/78F. Start in absurdly scenic  Rio , draped around a mountainous natural harbour and sporting some of the world’s best beaches, before heading inland to the Amazon. Pack bug spray.

6.  Mekong Delta, Vietnam

South East Asia’s answer to  Venice , this vast, emerald patchwork of paddies is known as the rice bowl of  Vietnam . The region acts as a kind of colander for the Mekong River as it drains into the South China Sea and is webbed with a dense, tropical maze of chocolate-brown waterways, teeming with villages, pagodas and floating markets. January is one of the best times to visit—warm, dry and sunny. You can hop on a 2–3 day tour starting from Ho Chi Minh City, which lies just to the north (if you book in-country, it’ll cost about the same as a 30-minute gondola ride in Venice).

7.  Yellowstone National Park, US

This world-famous Wyoming national park is always spectacular. It is mainly visited in warmer months, but if you can get there in January, you’ll be in for a real treat, with the whole place transformed into an other-worldly wintery wilderness. Animals are much easier to spot in the snow, with the most notable example being bison, complete with their shaggy winter coats, and the steam from the geysers is far more pronounced.

8.  Penang Island, Malaysia

With its colonial-era, mural-adorned capital city and plenty of white sand beaches to plonk yourself down on, you could do  much   worse than starting off the year on Malaysia’s Penang Island. Not to mention, January’s the perfect time to visit, as George Town becomes even more colourful than usual as Lunar New Year celebrations take over the streets. Wander around the city after dark to see its buildings lit up in a spectacular display, with Kek Lok Si Temple not to be missed.  

9.  Cuba

Basking in the heart of the Caribbean, Cuba makes for an excellent excursion from January’s wintery depths. The whole place feels like it was made for Instagram: the coasts are fringed with talc-like beaches and turquoise waters, while inland mountains lurch up from verdant plains. And then there’s the capital,  Havana , with its retro cars (thanks, communism!) and salsa clubs. Your friends at home will hate you. Temperatures are supremely agreeable this time of year, hovering around the 21C/70F mark.

10.  Zanzibar, Tanzania

Most people who hear of this place in that Tenacious D song think it sounds vaguely exotic (and probably fictional) and then forget about it. But not you. We want Zanzibar to be planted in your mind like one of the giant palm trees that line its white shores. Here’s what you need to know. It IS exotic AND real. It’s an archipelago. It’s in  Africa . It’s tropical. It’s stupendously beautiful. It’s affordable. And January is the best month to visit.

11.  Dubai

Big, bold, brash and mind-bogglingly vertiginous, this glittering forest of skyscrapers sprouting incongruously from the Arabian Desert demands your attention. Get your bearings from the world’s tallest building, browse the souk in the Old Town by Dubai Creek, and do some dune bashing on a desert safari. Dubai’s got about as much time for winter as it does for low-key construction projects, with January temperatures idling around 25C/77F — so you might want to factor in some beach time, too.

As if winter weren’t bad enough, January’s arrival means there’s officially nothing to look forward to until Easter . But there’s nothing to stop you from making your own fun – and what better way to banish the blues than with a dose of Vitamin D? Shorter flights won’t get you too deep into the 20℃s, but there will be sunshine, swimming pools and decidedly holiday-ish vibes. A longer journey, however, could take you anywhere from off-season surprises in the Serengeti to cruising the Amazon River. And, yes, there are beaches . It’s prime time for some of the world’s best, in fact, whether you fancy something far-flung, deliciously private or the finest view in the Caribbean. 1. Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Average January temperature: 18℃

It might be the second-largest Canary Island , after Tenerife , but Fuerteventura is comparatively empty: its teeny population numbers just 113,000, and there are more than 90 miles of golden, sandy coastline, only some of which has been developed. Though January is perhaps a little chilly for sunbathing, the island is a top year-round kitesurfing destination, thanks to consistent warm winds from the Sahara (Fuerteventura translates as ‘strong wind’). Away from the beaches, Jandía Natural Park’s starkly beautiful landscapes are cinematic enough to have landed a role in Solo: A Star Wars Story .

Where to stay: Inland, Mahoh is a fabulous rural resort built from striking Canarian volcanic stone that offers dramatic mountain views, hiking and horse riding. For a private family stay, we love the look of this minimalist two bedroom house with a heated pool and spectacularly close views of volcano Calderón Hondo.

2. St Lucia, Caribbean

Average January temperature: 28℃

St Lucia is one of the Caribbean ’s lushest islands – 80 per cent of it is rainforest – but its green good looks are because it’s one of the wettest, too. January, though, is among the driest months, and is an ideal time to visit, before February kicks off peak season. You could easily just come for a blast of sunshine and sea and nothing more, but if you're up for some action, hiking the island's famed Piton Mountains should be at the top of your to do list. For more leisurely sightseeing, ride the rainforest aerial tram – an open-air gondola that glides quietly through the tops of the trees at the ecological park.

Where to stay: Viceroy’s Sugar Beach is the undisputed cream of the hotel crop, due in no small part to its location: at the foot of Petit Piton, with peerless views of Grand Piton from both the beach and the pool. Add to that its rainforest spa – treatment cabanas sprinkled throughout the actual rainforest – and the fact that every clapboard cottage comes with a private plunge pool, and there’s perhaps no better way to thumb your nose at January in Britain. Another option is Ladera hotel , a bright, local, castaway charmer in one of the most incredible locations in the Caribbean, high on a hillside with direct views of the dramatic V formed by the Pitons.

3. Palawan, Philippines

Average January temperature: 30℃

Picture the Maldives , add soaring limestone karsts, and you’ve arrived at the islands of Palawan . The Philippines ’ most sparsely populated region has lately become the whispered-about tropical Shangri-La, and was the original inspiration for Alex Garland’s The Beach – the sneakster just didn’t want anyone to find it, so set the story in Thailand instead .

Where to stay: The standout stay is Amanpulo , a barefoot private-island retreat that’s home to what we can say with utter conviction is the world’s best bar . You must swim out to Kawayan, a thatched, floating bamboo raft that bobs lazily just offshore, and where the bartender mixes a mean Elderflower Gin Fizz. Elsewhere El Nido Resorts Miniloc feels authentically Filipino with traditional overwater nipa huts, thatched roofs, woven-bamboo walls, and its own lagoon.

4. Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica

Average January temperature: 26℃

Costa Rica is a firm favourite on the tourist trail for its range of adventure travel (zip-lining, rafting, surfing ) and biodiversity (sloths,! toucans,! multicoloured frogs!). But what if you just want to relax on a ridiculously good-looking beach? January, dry season, is a great time to do it, and Peninsula Papagayo is the place. This private retreat of 1,400 acres on the north Pacific coast has just two hotel resorts and miles of dreamy, uncrowded sands. For those days when you do feel like getting off your lounger, there are expert-guided excursions that cover everything from climbing 200-year-old trees to free-diving with humpback whales.

Where to stay: The two hotels to choose from – Andaz and a Four Seasons – are both are worthy options. Andaz Papagayo , the collection's first private beachside hotel, is the newer opening with a slightly nutty mix of stilted armadillo-shaped suites and more conservative rooms up in the trees. The Four Seasons Resort has long been on the list as one of the best hotels in Costa Rica. There are plenty of spacious villas and private residences to suit families and large groups. If you're travelling in a couple, opt for the one bedroom canopy suite with its own private pool.

5. Scottsdale, Arizona

Average January temperature: 20℃

Dubbed ‘the Beverly Hills of the Southwest’, Scottsdale is said to have more spas per capita than anywhere in the US . And yet this Sonoran Desert city – sitting just outside state capital Phoenix – has far more going for it than pampering and golf. The former winter home of Frank Lloyd Wright, it’s also a living museum of ravishing mid-century modern architecture: see Hotel Valley Ho, designed by Wright protégé Edward Varney (Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood were married here), and the architect’s very own masterpiece, Taliesin West. Then there’s the Arts District galleries, the Old Town’s singing cowboys and Wild West storefronts, and mesmerising desert scenery everywhere.

Where to stay: The Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain is probably the most indulgent place to stay in Scottsdale, with spectacular views over Paradise Valley and casitas with outdoor hot tubs and wood-burning fireplaces.

6. Off-season safari, Tanzania

Average January temperature: 29℃

Tanzania ’s long dry season, from June to September, is when the hordes descend to catch the Great Migration, making the Serengeti feel more like a theme park than a natural treasure. But the short dry season – January to March – is an excellent alternative, particularly towards the end of January, when the rains start to ease off yet everything is still green. Better still, it coincides with a prime time to catch migrating animals (they’re on the move all year in Tanzania, with herds making an ongoing circle around the Serengeti’s plains). It’s wildebeest calving season in the southern part of the park, making this the only time of year you’re all but guaranteed sightings of the biggest herds. While you’re down here, check out Ngorongoro ’s spectacular highlands, too.

One of Africa ’s most remote locations is also one of its most thrilling. Where else can you see lions stalking the beach in search of seals, surf wild, isolated breaks with dolphins and enjoy a four-wheel-drive safari without another soul in sight?

Where to stay: A handful of luxury camps dot the dunes tracing the shore and gung-ho outfitters such as Element Riders will take you on a surf safari, but the hottest thing on the coast is Shipwreck Lodge , its first resort. Just 10 cabins – a combination of maritime-chic and slightly sinister (the exterior bone-like adornments give the cabins the look of animal carcasses) – are cast adrift in shifting sands. It’s like nowhere else on earth, and an easy pick for one of the best places to stay in the region.

Since 2016’s Cyclone Winston unceremoniously battered this South Seas utopia, the Fijian archipelago has been quietly reinventing itself, moving from ultra-luxe honeymoon HQ to a standard-bearer for responsible tourism . After closing to much of the world during the pandemic, the island nation has now lifted its boarder restrictions and testing requirements, although international travellers are still required to be fully vaccinated and purchase travel insurance.

You get all the pros – swimming with pink dolphins, spotting brightly coloured macaws, fishing for piranha – and none of the cons – four-course meals and sunset Pisco Sours being preferable to sweating it out in a creature-infested camp. I spent years living in Vietnam and highly recommend the seaside town of Hoi An to explore the best of what Vietnam has to offer. The ancient village has snaking riverways for you to explore by boat, and the central location means you can also take a trip to Da Nang and Hue.

Best of all, the weather in January is dry and sunny, so you get to revel in the natural beauty of Vietnam without any rain.

Harbin, China

Another place beach lovers can’t miss is Binalong Bay and the Bay of Fires with its white sand, crystal clear waters and beautiful orange rocks.

Tasmania is also a great place for scuba diving. There you can enjoy deep dives, observe the fantastic biodiversity, dive through shipwrecks and even go cave diving.

While in Tasmania, make sure you go meet the infamous Tasmanian Devils by visiting Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary or the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo .

If you’re feeling romantic, you can also consider a walk on the beach alongside the world’s smallest penguins on Bruny Island.

A recent study by Google has revealed the top trending holiday destinations for 2024, offering key insights into where travelers are headed and when to book their flights. According to Google Flights data, the most popular destinations for Thanksgiving include:

Domestic hotspots like Chicago, Phoenix, and Dallas-Fort Worth also rank high for Thanksgiving travel.

As the December holidays approach, interest shifts towards more international locales, with Manila, Sydney, Mexico City, and Madrid all appearing on the list. The top ten destinations for Christmas and New Year’s Eve are:

When to book your flights

When it comes to booking flights for holiday travel, timing is key to getting the best deals. For Thanksgiving, the cheapest time to book domestic flights is around 45 days before departure. The best price window is between 26 and 59 days before your trip, making early October the prime time to secure your flights.

For Christmas, planning further ahead can save you more. Google reports that the lowest prices are found 58 days before departure, with deals typically available between 36 to 72 days out. To get the best rates for Christmas travel, aim to book in late October.

For European trips, flights tend to be cheapest around 94 days before departure. The historical low-price window is 50 days or more before takeoff, so book early for those international destinations.

While many believe that booking flights on a specific day of the week can yield savings, Google’s data shows that this isn’t significant. Historically, Tuesday has been just 1.3% cheaper than the most expensive day, Sunday. However, flying on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday can save you 13% on average, or even 20% for domestic trips.

You're in luck. Historically one of the cheapest months of the year to travel, airfare and hotel rooms can be up to 50 percent more affordable in January than the most expensive month of the year. But where to go? Comparing data from travel booking website Booking.com and the flight analytics app Hopper , we've found the 19 cheapest places in the world to travel in January.

That means affordable flights there and a seriously on sale place to stay when you arrive.

Of course, winter is low season in cold-weather places, so it's probably unsurprising that many colder locales appear on the list. But traveling in the off-season comes with big advantages: shorter lines for popular attractions, luxury hotels for a fraction of the high-season rate, better chances of getting coveted restaurant reservations, emptier flights, and that increasingly rare feeling of having a place all to your own to discover.

So if you're looking for a January escape without breaking the bank, look no further. Even typically expensive cities — London, Oslo, Barcelona — offer deep discounts this time of year. So book that spontaneous, last-minute getaway and say farewell to the mid-winter blues.

Chicago, Illinois

Of Chicago 's many selling points (world-class museums, storied sports teams, and a celebrated art, music, and comedy scene) the most interesting is probably the food. Hailed as a top food city, Chicago's restaurants are some of the best and most inventive in the country. When in Chicago eat as Chicagoans do, with (un)traditional deep-dish pizza at Pequod's or the perfect burger at Au Cheval , both quintessential stick-to-your-ribs foods for winter. You can't leave Chicago without at least trying to get a reservation at one of the most acclaimed restaurants in the country: Try Roister , Grant Achatz's newest endeavor, or Duck Duck Goat from Top Chef alum Stephanie Izard.

In January, Chicago hotels are 50 percent more affordable than the most expensive time of the year, and an average round-trip ticket is a very affordable $179.10.

Boston, Massachusetts

During an affordable winter trip to Boston , travelers can stay warm by checking out the city's venerable museums. There's the family-friendly Museum of Science and the award-winning Children's Museum , for example, while grown-ups might prefer the spectacular Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , built in the style of a 15th-century Venetian palazzo (try to time your visit with a Sunday afternoon classical music concert). Boston is also home to one of the best concert halls, acoustically, in the world. Catch a performance of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Symphony Hall, which offers free tours on select afternoons.

Brave the cold in January and you'll enjoy a 53 percent savings on hotel rates compared to the most expensive time of the year, with flights costing an average of $200.66.

Toronto, Canada

As the most populous city in Canada (our 2017 Destination of the Year ) and one of the most diverse cities in the world, Toronto has become a hotbed of cultural activity. With a Chinatown, a Koreatown, a Little Italy, a Little Portugal, and a Greek Town, tasting your way through the city's ethnic cuisine is one of the best ways to keep warm in January. Plus, the PATH system — the world's longest underground shopping complex at 19 miles long — connects various subway and rail stations with popular attractions, such as the landmark CN Tower and the Hockey Hall of Fame (when in hockey country, one must pay homage to its most beloved sport). In January you can also get a preview for what's in store at Fringe Festival while rubbing elbows with Canada's cultural elite. The Next Stage Festival , one of the premiere theater events of the year, is when past Fringe artists present their newest work.

Toronto hotels in January are 33 percent more affordable than the most expensive month of the year, while round-trip flights from all U.S. destinations will cost an average of $280.65.

Montreal, Canada

Perhaps only in Canada will people willingly subject themselves to the "coldest music festival in the world." The appropriately named Igloofest takes place on the Old Port waterfront in January and features big names like Kaytranada and Bonobo. If partying to electronic beats isn't your thing, take a spin around Montreal's old city for pure wintry romance. Saint Paul Street, with buildings dating back to the 17th century, is the definition of old-world charm, replete with fairy lights and horse-drawn carriages. As Montreal's craft beer scene is booming, get cozy at Pub BreWskey to have a pint paired with a heaping plate of poutine. Continue your tour of Montreal's comfort food in the vibrant Mile End neighborhood.

Visit Montreal in January for 31 percent off from the most expensive month. The average price of a flight this month is $286.67.

Bogotá, Colombia

Though Colombia's capital is often relegated to an airport layover by those heading straight to Cartagena or Medellin, revitalized Bogotá is becoming a destination in its own right. Wander La Candelaria, sip Colombian coffee, and learn about the country's complex political and social history at Museo Botero, Museo del Oro, and Museo Nacional. For an unforgettable night out, venture to Andrés Carne de Res in Chia, about an hour outside the city. You will be greeted with a shot of tequila at the door before feasting on steak, ceviche, and aguardiente. Dance the night away under neon lights to the pulsing sounds of rumba — all while circus-like performers flit about. After Andrés, the perfect place to bed down (and potentially nurse a hangover) is the quite affordable Four Seasons Casa Medina, which offers a third night free to entice would-be day trippers for a longer stint.

While traveling to Bogotá in January will yield a modest 8% savings on hotel rates, flights will cost an average of $448.06 from all U.S. cities. Plus, once you're in Colombia, day-to-day costs will be extremely wallet-friendly.

Helsinki, Finland

While the thought of Finland in January might scare you, Helsinki is actually not as frigid as you might think, with average temperatures in the 20s and 30s (cold, yes, but doable). The city makes good on its World Design Capital designation with a host of unique museums, event spaces, and saunas that exemplify modern design integrated into urban life. A prime example: the Chapel of Silence, a round, windowless structure in the middle of the city that invites visitors for a moment of tranquility and contemplation amid the downtown bustle. Join in the Finnish obsession with sauna (the country of 5.5 million people has more than 3 million of them) and sweat away the cold at Löyly , housed in a sleek wooden building on the waterfront. If you ever wanted to try Nordic wild game, now's your chance: the sauna's restaurant serves reindeer mousse and elk meatballs. With mashed potatoes and lingonberries, it's the perfect meal to warm you up on a cold winter night.

In January, hotels are 26 percent cheaper than the most expensive month of the year, and flights will set you back an average of $539.39.

Stockholm, Sweden

But immerse yourself in history to get a fuller picture: Gamla Stan, where Stockholm was founded in 1252, is one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in all of Europe — not to mention one of the most picturesque. Gamla Stan's oldest square, Stortorget, for example, is a fairytale row of pretty red and orange houses. Just across the square you can learn about the Nobel Prize and its laureates at the Nobel Prize Museum . And be sure to visit the fascinating Vasa Museum . Even for those who think they won't be interested in Viking history, the gigantic restored battleship that is the museum's centerpiece (95 percent of which is from the original) inspires awe about life as a 17th-century Viking.

While a trip to Stockholm is typically expensive, going in January means you can feel less guilty about the cost of food and drink while there because of discounts on hotels and flights. Hotels will be 27 percent less expensive than the most pricey month, and flights average $541.62.

San Diego, California

There may be no more laid-back city in America, and it's easy to see why. With balmy, practically perfect weather year-round, and a front seat to gorgeous Pacific coast vistas, residents don't have too much to complain about. And unlike other cold-weather destinations on this list, even in January, you can head outdoors to rejoice in the sun. Nosh on a breakfast burrito and people-watch at Oscar's Mexican Seafood in Pacific Beach, or sip a sunset drink on the deck of Hotel del Coronado . In between, visit Balboa Park. Its beautiful Spanish architecture, various museums, and manicured gardens (not to mention the San Diego Zoo), will keep you entertained for hours. San Diego is also home to over 130 craft breweries, churning out award-winning beers and pioneering the West Coast IPA. In January you can sample local brews, as well as the city's most popular food trucks, at the San Diego Brew Festival .

While San Diego is a great destination any time of year, going in January will afford you 37 percent savings on hotel rooms. Flights this month are also cheap, with round-trip tickets an average of only $274.95.

Porto, Portugal

Portugal is still enjoying a steady rise in popularity. A flourishing economy has helped create a huge tourism boom, landing Lisbon and the Algarve Coast at the top of many travel bucket lists. But don't underestimate dreamy Porto . This romantic city will win you over precisely because of its slow pace. Porto is compact enough that the best way to explore is on foot. Stroll along the Douro riverfront, admiring the stunning facades tiled with hand-painted azulejos , and sample pastéis de nata , an addicting custard tart, from bakeries along your path. Pick any cafe in the hilly Baixo district to enjoy sunset drinks — when you're watching the sun cast a warm glow over the terracotta rooftops as you sip a one-euro glass of wine, you'll wish you could stay longer.

Go in January when hotel rates are 36 percent cheaper than the most expensive month of the year, and flights are an average of $581.03.

Oslo, Norway

As it perennially lands at the top of the world's happiest countries list, there must be something about Norway that makes surviving — or rather, enjoying — the winter worth it. The hype about Oslo is growing due to its avant-garde art scene, hip coffee culture, exciting bars and gastronomy, all combined with a renewed effort by the city government to transform the waterfront into a place of social gathering. On one end of that waterfront is the Opera House, a shining example of contemporary design, with sleek angular lines that rise out of the water. On the other is the sloping wood and steel Astrup Fearnley, a Renzo Piano-designed contemporary art museum considered one of northern Europe's best. Beat the cold by bar and restaurant hopping in ultra-cool Grünerløkka, which gives New York's Williamsburg a run for its money. Once an industrial, working-class neighborhood, it's been injected with new life by artists, musicians, designers, and chefs who have opened up galleries, performance venues, and boutiques alongside some of the city's buzziest places to eat and drink.

Traditionally an expensive destination because of the strength of the Norwegian economy, you can help offset the cost of traveling there by going in January. Hotels are 31 percent more affordable than the most expensive time of year, and flights are an average of $582.98.

Moscow, Russia

One of Russia's biggest cultural events of the year, the Russian Winter Festival, runs from the end of December through mid-January — and Moscow does it bigger than anywhere else in the country. The city transforms into a winter wonderland with ice sculptures, Christmas markets, and a celebration of Russian folk culture. In Red Square, browse traditional crafts like nesting dolls, painted boxes, and wooden toys under the glow of St. Basil's Cathedral's colorful onion domes. In Izmailovo Park, catch daily folk dancing and music performances, and try traditional winter snacks such as bagels, jam, and special teas. Brave the sub-zero temps to go ice skating in Gorky Park, and don't miss a ride in a troika, a three horse-drawn sleigh, through the wintry cityscape.

In January, Moscow hotels are discounted 14 percent from the most expensive month of the year, while a round-trip ticket will cost an average of $588.15.

London, England

A visit to London at any time of year is grand, but in winter you'll get more of a local's experience. Besides, the best things to do — visiting world-class museums (many of them free), lingering over fancy afternoon tea, tucking into pints and pies in pubs, and watching plays in the West End — are all things that can be enjoyed indoors. A special wintertime tradition are pantomimes or "pantos," campy plays that encourage audience participation and often include cross-dressing and over-the-top song and dance. See one at the Old Vic or Hackney Empire theater, and you might catch beloved comedian Stephen Fry in drag. Another bright spot in January: the Lumiere light festival turns the city into a magical nighttime art exhibit, with light installations illuminating landmarks like Westminster Abbey and the National Theatre, as well as various spots across town.

London can be quite popular year-round, but in January you can get 23 percent savings from the most expensive time of year, and flights will cost an average of $595.70 from all U.S. origins.

Gothenburg, Sweden

Sweden's second city may play second fiddle to Stockholm, but it's just a smaller, more walkable place to experience the same Swedish charm, food, and design. Amble through Haga, the old town dating back to 1648. Its cobblestoned main street is lined with 19th-century wooden houses filled with shops and cafes (perfect for fika, the Swedish tradition of a relaxing coffee break and snack). Order the enormous cinnamon roll — literally the size of a dinner plate — at Café Husaren , and shop the boutiques for a pair of wooden clogs. Then head across the canal to the Feskekôrka fish market to enjoy an array of fresh, caught-daily seafood in a building modeled after Gothic churches. After a long day of strolling, warm up with a relaxing soak at Hagabadet , a beautiful Art Nouveau spa built in 1876.

Enjoy up to 25 percent savings in January on Gothenburg hotel rooms. Flights from all U.S. origins average $610.78.

Shanghai, China

Shanghai is a collision of old world and new: a bustling metropolis where futuristic skyscrapers tower over centuries-old neighborhoods of traditional shikoumen lane houses. You can eat, shop, and sightsee for days. And with more than 24 million residents, people-watching opportunities abound. The perfect elixir for when a deep chill sets in after wandering the city? Hot pot at the always-entertaining Hai Di Lao . Despite being a chain, you can't beat the exceptional service (think: complimentary massages and manicures while you wait, plastic cases to protect your phone from stray hot pot broth, and waiters twirling 10-foot-long noodles in the air).

Visit Shanghai in January for 13 percent savings on hotels. An average round-trip ticket will cost $614.78.

Beijing, China

If you've ever dreamed of witnessing the grandeur of the Great Wall in person, you're in luck: flights to Beijing are now super cheap. Beijing in January also means its iconic attractions (like the ancient palace complex, Forbidden City, and historic Tiananmen Square) won't have the crush of tourists typical at other times of year. Covered in snow, the sites will be quiet but hauntingly beautiful. To really embrace the season, head to Longqing Gorge, less than two hours north of of the city. From mid January through February, the annual snow and ice festival features hundreds of intricately carved ice sculptures, a human-sized ice maze, folk dancing performances, and firework displays, all set against a towering 230-foot frozen waterfall. Visitors can try winter sports like ice skating, tobogganing, ice fishing, and sledding.

In Beijing, January hotel rates are 19 percent more affordable than the most expensive time of the year, and the average round-trip ticket is $633.57.

Birmingham, Alabama

You may be surprised to learn that this affordable southern destination is also home to one of the country's most exciting food scenes, as well as one of the best art museums in the South. The Birmingham Museum of Art is free to visit and boasts a collection of more than 24,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, textiles, and decorative arts ranging from tribal African to Japanese Samurai to contemporary American furniture. When you need to refuel, you'll have plenty of options. Try the global fare at Pizitz Food Hall — get adventurous with Hawaiian poke or Ethiopian, or go classic with biscuits at Alabama Biscuit Co. To taste some of the superb Southern-fusion gastronomy coming out of Birmingham, dine at Ovenbird , James Beard-winning Chris Hasting's latest outpost, or Highlands Bar and Grill , helmed by another Beard-winner, chef Frank Stitt.

In January, Birmingham hotels are 20 percent more affordable than the most expensive time of the year, and an average round-trip ticket will run you $294.40.

Barcelona, Spain

Tourism in Spain is record-breaking, which unfortunately means that Barcelona is usually choked with tourists — so much so that the city has begun implementing measures to curb tourism. But that makes January the perfect time to go: Winters are mild in the Catalonian city and you'll enjoy the city's extremely popular attractions like Sagrada Familia and Parc Güell without the hordes.

Beat the crowds to the punch: In January you'll enjoy a huge 42 percent savings over the most popular time of year to visit. Flights will run you an average of $648.60 from all U.S. origins.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is an intimate city that's best discovered by idling in local haunts, chatting with the gregarious locals, and wandering the squares that showcase its signature Georgian architecture. But here's a quick list of sights you'll want to check off. Get your fill of history at St. Patrick's Cathedral and Trinity College . Visit the Jameson Distillery (where you can get a bottle personalized with your name) and the Guinness Storehouse (lines will surely be shorter in January). Shop along Grafton and Henry Streets, and visit Moore Street Market for a taste of old Dublin — you may even see horse-drawn delivery carts. Finally, warm up with a pint or several at storied Temple Bar , where you can see live Irish music, or at Brazen Head , the city's oldest pub.

Guangzhou, China

Unlike northern China, Guangzhou's winter is mild and dry, with average highs in the mid-60s and flowers abloom everywhere — it's even dubbed the "Flower City" for its year-round flora and greenery. China's third largest city, home to a whopping 19 million people, is a juxtaposition of ancient and modern: more than two millennia of history steeped in a wealthy, bustling metropolis. Step back in time at the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, a Buddhist temple built in 537 AD (still a popular place of worship today), or at the well-preserved Shawan historic village, dating back 800 years. To witness modern Guangzhou, look up toward its gleaming contemporary architecture, like the iconic Canton Tower and the space-age Zaha Hadid-designed Opera House.

In January, Guangzhou hotels are 38 percent more affordable than the most expensive time of the year, and an average round-trip ticket will set you back $658.83.
