You Better Work! Britney Spears' 15 Best Live Performances

By Christopher Rosa

Last week marked the 15th anniversary of Britney Spears ' first solo concert tour. You've already seen our nostalgia-inducing trip down memory lane , where we compared shots from her  ...Baby One More Time  Tour (1999) and her current Las Vegas residency  Britney: Piece of Me.  But what about all the good stuff in between—the tours, television appearances and surprise shows that made our Britney-loving hearts skip several beats? What are Brit Brit's greatest performances of all time?

We had a  ton  of material to choose from—it has been more than a decade, after all—but we whittled down the list to 15 signature performances that encompass what we all love about Britney: Theatrics, amazing choreography and (from time to time) solid vocals. In these clips alone, we see Britney tangling with a python, flying in the rain, playing whack-a-mole and—oh yeah!—kissing Madonna. Yeesh! We're tired just thinking about it.

Take a look at our choices and let us know in the comments below what Britney performances make your spirits soar. And yes, "all of them" is an acceptable answer.

15. “Break the Ice,” 2013-2014’s Britney: Piece of Me (Las Vegas Residency)

Britney's dancing in her current Vegas show is a little... meh.  However, our girl gets a random burst of energy during her rendition of "Break the Ice," and the results are flawless. Danceney is back! (Well, for about 2 minutes.)

14. “Everytime,” 2004’s The Onyx Hotel Tour

Not particularly known for her live vocals, the world takes a deep breath whenever Britney drops the playback and attempts to sing. We were pleasantly surprised with "Everytime" back in '04. Brit does have a lovely voice when she tries.

13. "Piece of Me,” 2009’s The Circus Starring: Britney Spears

Considered her comeback tour, Britney is in full "caged animal" mode for this version of "Piece of Me." Literally. She's in cage. Oh, and she flips her hair about 10,000 times (all perfection).

12. “Gimme More,” 2011's Femme Fatale Tour

While her 2007 MTV Video Music Awards performance will forever remain "Gimme More's" pièce de résistance, Britney's 2011 version is a satisfying treat. The Egyptian-inspired dancing highlights Brit's best on-stage features.

11. “Stronger,” 2001’s American Music Awards

Britney hosted the AMAs in 2001, but she did take a 4-minute break to wow us with the best live version of "Stronger" ever. The rock-influenced sound and choreography make this performance explode.

10. “Me Against the Music” and “(I Got That) Boom Boom,” TRL's   Spankin’ New Music Week 2003

Britney turned the sex kitten notch  waaay  up for this live-in-Times Square performance. Her dancing is on point (and so is that fedora).

9. “Oops!...I Did It Again,” 2001-2002’s Dream Within a Dream Tour

Perhaps the best opening in  any  Britney tour, "Oops!" gets the full "Vegas spectacle" makeover here. The pyrotechnics! The cuckoo-bananas costumes! That, erm , thing she's spinning on! Not to mention she looks  muy caliente in that all-black ensemble.

8. “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” 2002’s  American Music Awards

Britney's best live vocals to date? Maybe so. Our girl sounds pitch perfect here, and her subtle vocals are complemented by that lovely nude-toned dress.

7. “Touch of My Hand” and “Breathe On Me,” 2004’s The Onyx Hotel Tour

Britney takes a heavy dose of  Erotica- era Madonna during these two back-to-back numbers (her raciest on-stage antics ever). We guess the party really doesn't start until you simulate sex and then make out with one of your back-up dancers...right?

6. “If U Seek Amy,” 2009’s The Circus Starring: Britney Spears

This one is just fun. In an animated number, a smiling Britney bounces around the stage with a glittery pink mallet and plays whack-a-mole (naturally). It's silly and over-the-top, yes, but oozing  a real sense of joy that seems to be missing in Britney's more recent performances. *Sigh.*

5. “Toxic,” 2003 ABC Special

"Toxic" is a Britney concert staple, but rarely does she do it with this much oomph.  The dancing is tight, her hair is blonde and free-flowing and when she puts on her blindfold, we're on the edge of our seats. Where'd ya go, B? We don't see you! #magic #science

4. “Like a Virgin/Hollywood” with Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliot, 2003’s MTV VMAs

This may have been an homage to Madonna, but our eyes (like always) were on Britney. Sure, Brit Brit was the only one lip-synching ( allegedly ), but her hair flips make up for it.  And the fact that her kiss with Madge was the only one that mattered was (and still is) everything.

3. “…Baby One More Time,” 2001-2002’s Dream Within a Dream Tour

The outside comes inside for the finale of Britney’s mesmerizing Dream Within a Dream Tour . Rain pours all over Britney as she bounces around the key-shaped stage to an up-tempo rendition of “BOMT.” Oh, and then takes flight. BOOM.

2. “Oops!...I Did It Again/Satisfaction,” 2000’s MTV VMAs

Britney channeled Michael Jackson for her second VMAs performance, where she ripped off her black suit to reveal a barely-there flesh-colored ensemble. The crowd went crazy when then 18-year-old Britney stared right into their souls and said, “Oooh! I did it again.” YES SHE DID.

1. “I’m a Slave 4 U,” 2001’s MTV VMAs

What’s a girl to do to shake her pigtails image? Wrap a yellow python around her neck and writhe around the Metropolitan Opera House stage to her Neptunes-concoted hit song, apparently. And the results are #iconic.

How big could a Britney Spears comeback tour be? ‘As big as she wants it to be,’ say experts

One day, the Los Angeles Superior court may decide that Britney Spears should be free of her conservatorship.

The pop star has, for years, wanted to unwind the 2008 arrangement where the court placed her father, Jamie Spears, in control of almost every aspect of her life. That includes her finances and $60 million estate (which the financial firm Bessemer Trust now co-manages, though they asked to be removed from the conservatorship in a court filing Wednesday, citing Britney Spears’ public criticisms).

Britney Spears’ father seeks court probe of her conservatorship allegations

Britney Spears’ father has asked the court to investigate his daughter’s statements on the court’s control of her medical treatment and personal life.

July 1, 2021

“I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized,” Spears told the court on June 23, in an explosive hearing where she alleged that she’s forced to use an IUD and had to work against her will in ways that she compared to “sex trafficking.” “I’m not happy,” Spears said. “I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

Los Angeles Superior Court judge Brenda Penny said that Spears’ remarks were “courageous,” adding that Spears would have to file a formal petition to end the conservatorship before Penny could make a decision. On Wednesday, Penny denied a months-old request to remove Jamie Spears as conservator, but Spears has yet to file to remove the conservatorship entirely.

If Britney is finally freed, as a passionate cadre of fans have long advocated for, what kind of career could she come come back to?

That question would, at long last, be up to Spears, who turns 40 in December. She has made public comments suggesting that she wants to focus on family life, but last week said in an Instagram video that ”I have no idea” if or when she’d return to performing and recording. “I’m in transition in my life.”

In 2019, after the closure of her Las Vegas residency, Spears’ manager Larry Rudolph told Billboard that “I’m not sure if or when she will ever want to work again. It’s that simple ... I have one role in Britney‘s life. I’m her manager. She calls me if and when she wants to work. Other than that I’m not involved in anything else.”

A representative for Rudolph did not immediately return messages for comment.

But music industry experts said that, should she want to return to touring, recording and marketing deals, she would quickly re-assert her place atop the pop charts and arenas.

A post-#FreeBritney comeback tour would be “as big as she wants it to be,” said Ray Waddell, president of Oak View Group Media and Conferences, the parent company of the touring-industry publication Pollstar . “I think we’ve barely scratched the surface as to how big Britney Spears can be as a live artist.”

Supporters of Britney Spears rally in DTLA as hearing on conservatorship takes place 6-23-2021

Britney Spears’ conservatorship shines a light on the legal remedy’s harsh reality

Experts in probate law say the singer’s account is well within the realm of how conservatorship works. “You’re taking away a person’s right to make any decisions over themselves,” one said.

June 26, 2021

According to Pollstar data, Spears’ arena tours in 2009, 2011 and 2018 — all while she was under conservatorship — grossed around an average of $1 million per show and sold 10,000 tickets a night. Her Las Vegas residency “Piece of Me,” which ran from 2013-2017, averaged $555,225 per night in a 4,000-seat theater. The residency earned more than $100 million in revenue.

“That’s big-league, and my opinion is she would do even better now,” Waddell said. “Spears could sell out major arenas around the world, and possibly stadiums . I can’t speak to all the noise around her, but Britney Spears is an untapped goldmine as a touring artist. She could go out now and do $250-$350 million ticket sales on tour, and that’s conservative. There are a ton of variables, but the potential is definitely there.”

Waddell said he sees Spears on par with Madonna and Celine Dion as “culturally significant artists that can sell tickets and inspire extreme devotion from their fans over a long period of time, that transcend popular trends. If anything, Britney has become a bigger star over the last decade.”

On streaming services like Spotify, Britney’s catalog remains massively successful, but more or less where it has been even before the #FreeBritney movement began. Singles like “Toxic” and “Oops!…I Did It Again” tally 400-500 million total streams each on the service, and seven of her studio albums have gone platinum (her first two went diamond, selling more than 10 million copies apiece).

Photo essay: #FreeBritney fans on why they support the movement

Outside a downtown Los Angeles courthouse Wednesday, demonstrators donned pink-accented “Free Britney” T-shirts and held signs calling for investigations of the singer’s management and security personnel, who have come under immense scrutiny following the buzzy release of FX/Hulu’s “Controlling Britney Spears” documentary.

Sept. 29, 2021

A representative for Spotify said on background that, while Spotify doesn’t provide specific figures, that there haven’t been any dramatic peaks in her streaming figures over the last few years, even after the February documentary “ Framing Britney Spears ” thrust her case back into the national spotlight.

That’s common among superstar acts’ back catalogs. Spears’ label RCA most recently reissued her 2016 album “Glory” with bonus tracks last year. But were she to release new music post-conservatorship, fan devotion could power it to the top of charts, especially if new songs addressed her circumstances.

“‘Blackout’ is probably my favorite album of hers, because she was able to take everything that was going on in her life in 2007 and channel it into one of the best pop albums of all time,” said Tess Barker, the co-host with Barbara Gray of the popular podcast “Britney’s Gram” and the forthcoming “ Toxic: The Britney Spears Story ,” a new podcast series about Spears’ conservatorship out July 7 (The two were featured in “Framing Britney Spears”).

Another lucrative career option could be to oversee production of her own documentary. By way of comparison, Billie Eilish sold her 2021 film, “ The World’s A Little Blurry ,” to Apple TV+ for a reported $25 million, after shooting it on a budget of $1-$2 million.

The interest is clearly there — “Framing Britney Spears” is widely expected to be nominated for an Emmy this year. Yet Spears had sharp words for it, writing on Instagram that there were “So many documentaries about me this year with other people’s takes on my life...These documentaries are so hypocritical … they criticize the media and then do the same thing...Why highlight the most negative and traumatizing times in my life from forever ago?”

But as with Rihanna and her Fenty fashion line, Spears’ biggest windfall may come from brand deals and product lines. Spears was a pioneer in the pop-star fragrance market in the early 2000s, launching a line with Elizabeth Arden that became a multi-billion-dollar brand. “Curious” sold over 500 million bottles, and a star like Spears with proven sway in that market, on a wave of renewed public interest, could yield a massive windfall.

“She was one of the first pop stars of the millennium era to redefine what success looks like,” said Andrew Hampp, who runs 1803 LLC, a consultancy that partners musicians and music companies with brands (they’ve worked with acts like Chance the Rapper and Khalid, and Hampp profiled Spears for Billboard in 2015). “What she created, Rihanna has perfected, and now Rihanna spends arguably more time on beauty than music. Spears could absolutely be a beauty mogul in line with Kylie Jenner once she’s able to cut the reins of her conservatorship.”

Hampp said that skincare, wellness and athleisure are contemporary markets where Spears’ brand and fan loyalty would instantly make an impact. Today, unlike with her Pepsi commercials of the 2000s, she likely wouldn’t even need to partner with an established brand to do so.

“The landscape for partnerships is very different now than it was even five years ago,” Hampp said. ”Stars use their intellectual property to create, they’re not waiting for Pepsi to cut a check. She could easily roll out a lingerie line. Or, because wellness culture is the norm now, she could do something like Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello and partner with an app like Calm or Headspace. There’s just so much goodwill towards her right now.”

Britney Spears points while sitting on stage.

But fans should also be prepared for a world where Spears takes a significant break from music, marketing or doing anything but taking care of herself and her family.

“True fans know we may not get new music soon or ever again, and should definitely not expect anything,” Barker said.

“I think Britney wants a break because she wasn’t making her own choices. I think when she has autonomy, she’ll be more excited and reinvigorated about work,” Gray added.

The two hosts would love to see Spears come back with a stripped-down album of ballads like “Everytime,” used to such memorable effect in Harmony Korine’s teen-gangster fantasia “Spring Breakers.” But #FreeBritney has already kicked off a culture-wide reconsideration of how young women are treated in popular culture, and how the legal structure of conservatorships can be used to abusive ends.

Should Spears be able to exit hers, whatever she does next will be profound in its own right, as it will be her decision alone.

“She seems to truly love performing, but also being a mother and having a normal life,” Gray said. “She’s been craving that, so we hope people respect her. Leave her alone to be a normal person.”

Britney Jean Spears (born 2 December, 1981) - aka Britney Spears - is a recording artist and entertainer from Mississippi, US.

Britney Spears started performing at a very young age, by performing on stage productions and television shows. Then, in 1997, she was signed to Jive Records.

Spears was credited with leading the revival of teen pop in the late 1990s, she was said to be the most gifted teenage pop idol for many years. Her first album "Baby One More Time" became an international success, making her well known in the music industry. The album was released in 1999, followed by the album "Oops!... I Did It Again" in 2000. She had the best selling albums by a teenage solo artist at the time.

Britney did extremely well during her career and became a well known pop star, but in 2007 her personal life problems became public knowledge. During that year she released her fifth studio album called "Blackout", with such hits as "Gimme More" and "Piece of Me". Yet the same year Spears went into a drug rehabilitation facility for less than a day. The following night she shaved her head at a hair salon during her break down.

Spears admitted herself into other forms of treatment in the following weeks after her break down. The album "Blackout" went on to sell over three million copies.

In 2008, Britney went on her tour called "The Circus Starring Britney Spears", to promote her sixth album "Circus". The tour was one of the highest grossing global concert tours by 2009.

In March 2011, she released her seventh studio album called "Femme Fatale", which peaked at number one in the US, Canada and Australia. Its peak in the US tied Spears with Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson for the third most number ones achieved amongst female artists.

In 2012 she began to work on her eighth album called "Britney Jean", with the like of Will.i.am. The following year she featured as a vocalist on Miley Cyrus's song "SMS (Bangerz)".

Spears also renewed her contract with RCA and continues to record new music.

Live reviews

Britney Spears is a true performer; every aspect of her show is designed to entertain and delight her audience. She always has a varied set list that includes old favorites like 'Baby One More Time' and 'Oops' as well as new classics like 'Womanizer' and 'Perfume'.

The set(s) at a Britney Spears show are always over the top, and you can expect a lot of surprises. A single performance may include: rain, fire, smoke, moving set pieces and confetti.

For her Circus Tour (circa 2007), the audience was transported to a three-ring circus in every way! I loved the stunts and trapeze tricks!

Her Dream Within a Dream Tour (circa 2002) had eleborate set pieces and props, including a car!

The short-lived Onyx Hotel Tour was raunchy and sassy, much like the 22-year-old Britney at the time. It was cut short due to knee surgery.

Britney's Femme Fatale Tour (circa 2011) was action-packed, and ended with her literally flying across a screen of sparks wearing giant wings!

Her Piece of Me Tour (Vegas, 2013- ) is absolutely spectacular, with incredible sets, video, audio and TONS of surprises. It goes through five DIFFERENT phases, and ends in an epic dance number!

Britney Spears loves to perform and entertain. Every show also includes incredible dancers and absolutely stunning costumes. She often changes five or more times over the course of two hours ... each costume getting more and more elaborate as the show goes on. She will sparkle, enchant, and seduce the audience, depending o the song. Imagining what the costumes will be like is one of the fun parts of seeing her live - she always delivers and delights.

Finally, the Britney Army is the BEST group of fans a super star could ask for, and being surrounded by them at a live performance is awesome. We are kind, enthusiastic, and will dance the night away while singing along to our favorite Britney tune. Don't be afraid to say hello - we love meeting fellow Britney fans!

Britney Spears was and continues to be one of the biggest names in music of all time. She is the original pop princess, and watching her live is a once on a lifetime experience that is certainly not to be missed. Britney has a whole array of classics, the best of which are always performed at her shows. There isn’t a single person today who hasn’t heard of ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’, surely? Although Britney is not exactly known for her vocal skills, this barely matters when going to see her live. Her shows are a spectacular performance, with bright flashing lights and backing dancers galore. The costume changes are intense, with some outrageous outfits. And the set is incredible. For her Circus Tour, the entire stage was decorated like a circus with Britney as the ringleader: it was visually spectacular to behold. Classic hits such as ‘Toxic’, ‘Oops I Did it Again’, ‘Everytime’, ‘Circus’, ‘Womanizer’, ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ and, of course ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’, were all performed and all received an incredible crowd reaction.

What can you really say about an icon like Britney Spears. The princess of pop has an imaginable amount of hits so her setlist could fill a show that lasted all night, yet she selects what she believes is her finest work and what will please her ever-loyal fan base the most. It is worth noting that Britney has not sung completely live in many years, this is just given fact so when you move past this and appreciate the experience that she gives to an audience, it becomes secondary.

The video interludes, the impressive dance routines, the light displays and the dazzling costumes all turn a Britney show from a simple gig into an experience. Then add into the equation mega-hits such as 'Gimme More', 'Piece of Me' and '...Baby One More Time' and you have a show that others will struggle to top.

Especially when it comes down the all out performance that is the finale of 'I Wanna Go' and 'Womanizer', the audience scream and sing in equal measure as this well trained pop star owns the stage in a way that only Britney can. A delight to watch and a master at work.

I love Britney Spears, so this may be a biased review, but I loved the show! From her first song, Work Bitch, to her last song, Till The World Ends, it was a great show. She changes outfits and scenes every couple songs, continuing to keep my attention for the whole show, even using a ring of fire for her performance of Circus. A couple of her most famous outfits we're on display in the entrance to the Axis theatre, which was fun.

I enjoyed hearing all of her songs and energy was great. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a great show in Las Vegas.

Goddess!!! What an incredible performer, she's still got it. I would forever see Britney live. I don't care if she has live vocals or not. She can dance her ass off and she looks amazing doing it! I am without words for the concert I went to last night.

I just went to go see Britney over the weekend. She was absolutely amazing! Definitely in my top 5 performers. She put on a very entertaining show and even performed with a surprise guest...Tinashe. Would totally recommend go seeing her!

Britney is lip-sync queen. This girl can´t sing and dance. I don´t know why she is famous.

But I am grateful, because I have seen it, and I think, who didn´t seen it, don´t believe it. It´s like watching DVD.

She didn’t really need to be there. Bad lip syncing. Awful dancing and generally pointless. I don’t understand how Britney is still relevant. She’s done well considering she has little talent

It was amazing. She keeps up with the dancers and looks great. The props on stage are so cool. I'm so glad I got to see her perform and can't wait to come back and watch the show again

Britney Spears Talks Previous Touring Pace: ‘I Don’t Think I Ever Want to Do it Again’

By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Britney Spears took to Instagram to reflect on some of the things she’s grateful for following her  now-terminated conservatorship . She also railed against some of her early career choices and experiences, including the demanding pace of tours, an interview with Diane Sawyer where Sawyer made her cry, and the state of California “permitting my father to have me work as hard as he worked me all those years and never seeing a dime,” in a new post.

As Spears celebrates post-conservatorship life, it seems she does not miss being on the road. “I know I’m not playing in huge arenas with my loud band anymore but I will be honest and say life on the road is hard,” She intimated. “My first three years in the biz and on the road were great but I’ll be completely honest and say that after those three tours and the pace I was going… I don’t think that I ever want to do it again !!! Despite her misgivings, Spears looks to be enjoying newfound independence both big and small: getting good sleep, shopping for Christmas, and the freedom to use an ATM and spend her own cash, something that she was denied under the conservatorship. “I’m not embarrassed to share this,” she writes of taking out $300 from an ATM. “Well, maybe a little… but I’m more embarrassed for my family condoning the fact that I wasn’t allowed to have cash for so long when I worked my little ass off for them.”

Last week, Spears was granted the power to sign her own estate planning documents. On her birthday, she opened up about the “forced” therapy she had to endure while under the conservatorship.
