Jirang also known as Chandragiri, is a small village in Gajapati district of Odisha, which boasts of a small but significant Tibetan population. The village had maintained a very low profile untill it became home to the largest buddhist monastery of Eastern India in 2010.

Since then, slowly and steadily its popularity has grown within the tourist circles of India and abroad. “I was born here, been here my whole life. My parents came in when the exile began, but since then this is all we have. On paper we might be refugees, but for me, this is Ho me”.

This is what a Tibetan lady had to say when one of us asked how her hindi was so flawless. She must be in her mid 40s, running a food court outside the Jirang monastery.

Jirang, is popularly known by many adjectives like Chandragiri Tibetan Settlement, the Tibetan settlement of Odisha (or Gajapati) and the Buddhist Settlement of Chandragiri. Jirang (aka Jirango or Jiranga) is a small village tucked away in the rural heartland of southern Odisha. The place has had a long history of Tibetan settlements, dating as far back as the 1960s.

Jirang is situated in a very beautiful valley, surrounded by various hills of the eastern ghats. A small waterfall is also located nearby making it a worthwhile combo for anyone deciding to pay a visit.

My journey of jirang:

The covid 19 pandemic had limited me to my home for almost a year, so when a few of my friends proposed a road trip I jumped at it. The plan was to go to Behrampur and explore touristy and off beat places. Jirang was on top of the list, as all of us wanted to see the largest buddhist monastery in this part of the world.

Drive through the National Highway 16 in the evening

Jirang is a good 290 KM away from Bhubaneswar, so driving all the way in one day seemed like a bad idea. We decided to make a night halt in OTDC Taptapani, a state run guest house in the hills of Ganjam district of Odisha.

The sprawling campus of the guesthouse coupled with the serene natural surrounding made it a stay worth talking about. I however will save it for another post. For now lets just say that the guesthouse stay turned out to be much more than just a night halt.

After spending the night in the guesthouse we started for Jirang in the morning, which was 40 Km away. The road connecting Taptapani and Jirang, NH 326, deserves a special mention here, as it was as scenic as any hilly drive can be. Beautiful black top road, with rocky hill face on one side and forest cover on the other. The forest occasionally gave way to small clearings, which housed small villages. Vehicular traffic was low, so driving on that road was pure bliss.

An hour into the drive, the hills gave way to a valley, where we saw our first share of the colourful buddhist prayer flags. We opened google map and slowed down our car as the road to Jirang is a detour from the highway that is damn easy to miss.

We caught glimpse of some monks in maroon robe ridding scooters, their cotton bags, loaded with vegetables. Young boys in punk hairdoos, riding bikes, in football attire, probabaly going or returning from a game. Soon enough we reached the detour and took a sharp right.

History of Jiranga (Chandragiri):

Chandragiri, was chosen as one of the main six camps/settlements established, when the Dalai Lama along with a sizeable Tibetan population went into exile and took refuge in India. The settlement consists of 5 main villages, Labarasingh, Mahendragadh, Tankilipadar Chandragiri and Jirang. All these are very close by, with 10-20 km from each other. The Tibetans call the whole area as Phuntsokling , which translates to -“Land of Happiness and Plenty”.

The Jirang valley:

The detour took us onto a typical rural road of India, part asphalt and part dirt. Both sides of the road was flanked by large swatches of farm land. These farms are mostly used to grow maize, and it is the main source of income for the Tibetan population here. There is so much maize grown here, that Jirang and its adjoining areas are known as the ‘Maize bowl of Odisha’.

The eastern ghats dominates the skyline of Jirang, with hills of various sizes on all sides. The second highest peak of Odisha, Mahendragiri, is a mere 70 km from here. The sights of the green fields followed by high hills brings out a kind of joy, in the heart of all visitors to this beautiful valley.

While driving on the road we caught our first glimpse of the top of the monastery. The top vimana was coloured in gold, the base of which was white. We just wished that road would vanish and we teleport to the monastery, we could no longer wait to witness the beauty with our very eyes.

Getting closer to the monastery, we were spellbound by a large lake. It has a statue of Padmasamvaba sitting atop a lotus in the middle of it. Bound on all sides, this lake sits right infront of the monastery complex, allowing for its visitors to relax on its banks, while soaking in the serene atmosphere. The lake adds to the beauty of the place, concocting with the hills and endless farms, enhancing beauty of the place many folds.

Life In Jirang:

We were eating momos at the only food court outside the monastery, when we started chatting with the Tibetan lady who ran the place. She told that her parents had come to India sometime in the 60s and have been here ever since. She mentioned that she knew more about Odisha than her native Tibet, and that she loved Dalma, the vegetable lentil concoction staple to Odisha.

Through her, we got to know some insights into the daily life of the Tibetan populace here. The fact that there are no proper urban centres nearby, they plan meticulously to stock up supplies. Members of the community make weekly trips to Berhampur, to bring back stuff for the whole village.

chandragiri odisha places to visit

She also explained that the arid land here wasn’t very suitable for cultivating paddy, which is the main crop of the state. Therefore they resorted to cultivating maize/corn, which over time became their main source of livelihood. Corn from the village is now sold all over the country either in whole or powdered variety. We even got a glimpse of the large cache of corn stored in a small cottage at the entrance of the village.

The Monastery:

After having the delicious potato filled momos, we started our exploration of the place. The name of the monastery is Padma Sambhava Maha Vihara monastery, named after guru Padmasambhava, who is considered as second buddha by the Nyingma school of buddhism, Tibet. Tickets to the monastery costs a nominal Rs. 20, which goes towards the upkeep of the monastery.

An ornate gate led us into the huge courtyard, that had a meticulously manicured lawn with big trees of Banyan, palm and neem strategically placed to provide for some much needed shade. The main monastery sits at one end, and is flanked by rows of residential quarters for the monks on both sides.

The Main Temple:

Its one thing to look at the Monastery from a distance, but as I went closer, I realized how grand it is. It is five storey tall, coloured mostly in white, with shades of blue and gold. The thatched roof has embellishments of mystic beasts that enhances the beauty of the whole place.

Narrow pillars ran across the periphery of the monastery, painted in bright red with intricate etchings. The walls had beautiful paintings depicting nature, various stages of Buddha’s life and various animals. It felt as if art and folk tales of Tibetan Buddhism whispered from every corner of the monument.

Looking up at the ceiling I saw colourful paintings of mountains, animals, lotus, clouds and waterfalls – all motifs of Tibetan art – besides, different ‘mandalas’ that signify transformation of soul. There are paintings of the phoenix and dragon as well which symbolise the yin and yang forces in the universe. It is quite evident that underlying these works of art, is a complex set of beliefs that promise to guide a soul towards the path of enlightenment

The Inner Sanctum:

Photography is prohibited inside the monastery, so you will have to go by my words here. The meditation hall is huge, whose entrance is decorated with more beautiful paintings. At the centre of the meditation hall, sits a 23-foot bronze statue of Lord Buddha, flanked by 17-foot-high statues of Lord Avalokitesavara and Lord Padmasambhava on either side.

The walls are filled with brightly coloured murals of Budha and Bodhisattvas, animals , sun, moon, mandalas and mantras. Most paintings are accentuated by a golden hue, making the paintings pop out of the wall.

A carpet covers the middle of the hall, running from the door till the statue of Lord Buddha. On either edge of this carpet are rows of desks meant for the monks. Prayer flags, also find a very peominent place inside the sanctum.

The Residential Quarters:

Coming out of the main temple, I stood at awe looking at the residential quarters for the monks. It looked very similar to my college hostel, just infinitely clean. A long balcony with a steel railing, connected all the rooms together in one single file. I saw a few wooly dogs sitting on the porch, looking all taken care of and cute.

At any point in time there are around 200-300 monks studying at the Monastery. Not all are from Tibet, rather most of them are from various parts of India, like Sikkim and Darjeeling, who have come down to study buddhism. They typically come here at a very early age and remain untill they complete their study and after that they may choose to stay here or move to any other buddhist temple accross the world.

The Stupas of Jirang:

The architecture of Tibetan monasteries contains basically two part, one being the main temple known as Gompas and the other being Stupas known as Chortens. We had visited the Gompa, which was the monastery, it was now time for the Chorten.

chandragiri odisha places to visit

We left the monastery and started off towards a place that was about 100 mtrs away. This bounded place had eight stupas, arranged in a circular fashion and surrounded by colourful prayer flags. These flags are traditionally used to promote peace, wisdom, compassion, and strength. Tibetans believe the wind will blow the prayers and mantras in to the surroundings, spreading goodwill and compassion.

chandragiri odisha places to visit

The stupas refers to major events in Lord Buddha’s life as explained in Tibetan Buddhism. In the centre stands the Stupa of Enlightenment, which is the tallest of them all, signifying Lord Buddha’s attainment of enlightenment when he conquered worldly temptations.

chandragiri odisha places to visit

These Stupas are accompanied with different type of prayer wheels, one of them particularly huge, enclosed within a canopy and multiple smaller ones, bordering the periphery of the largest stupa. Once rotated in the clockwise direction, the wheels generate a very soothing sound that filled up the entire surrounding with a lot of positivity.

The Bonus – Khasada waterfall:

The monastery provided for some much needed solace, however it was time to explore another popular attraction Just 5 km away from the place. It is a small but pretty waterfall, which has become a popular picnic spot for the locals. Known as Khasada, this waterfall attracts visitors from far and near.

chandragiri odisha places to visit

This place has undergone some small commercialisation over the years. A designated paid parking spot, a shop renting out picnic utensils and small shops selling kumkum , have come up around the waterfall. Across the stream stands a small temple, for those willing to cross it, either through the water or a makeshift bridge made out of abandoned electricity poles.

Once we reached the waterfall, we saw some small picnicking groups, frantically running around the waterfall for that elusive perfect selfie. Who needs selfie when you have your friends to capture one for you.

chandragiri odisha places to visit

Khasada in the local language means Slippery, and it is once I stepped inside the water, did I realise why this name was endowed to this fall. Some of the stones I laid my foot were some of the slippery -est things I have ever walked on. Words of caution : take care of your steps when on Khasada.

In conclusion:

To be fair, Jirang is not a very accessible location, with low frequency public transit systems. However the monastery along with the raw nature is something that makes a visit to Jirang worth all the effort.

One may not know, but there are a seemingly endless number of destinations and attractions to visit in Odisha, which will leave everyone enchanted and craving for more! Odisha is definitely India’s best kept secret, which now demands to be explored.

Odisha’s Very Own Mini Tibet: Chandragiri

Dinabandhu Nayak

Chandragiri or Phunksokling District or Jeerang is certainly unexplored. Jeerang is a humble community and among the main Tibetan settlement in Odisha, situated in Chandragiri, prominently called the “maize-bowl of the nation”. Located about 90 km away by road from Brahmapur, this small Tibetan enclave lies in the shadow of the Eastern Ghats in the Gajapati district.

Little green hill slopes lay dispersed unevenly on enormous maize fields and once you take a look at it you will undoubtedly be hypnotized by the view and the wonderful hints.

History Says

After China attacked Tibet, Tibetans fled to all across the globe. India had consistently invited them thus in numerous parts of this nation, we can discover Tibetan settlements. After Dharamsala was given to the Tibetans to have their administration in a state of banishment there, a number of families moved to Dharamsala to feel like home, to live among their own kin and to make their voices for Tibet sound stronger.

However, some were worn out on losing their nation, moving and having transitory homes and didn’t have any desire to leave. Chandragiri is one of those spots where they remained.

In the wake of escaping from Tibet, they took a few years to change to business so as to restore the distant memory. Summers were spent in cultivating maize, and winters in weaving woollen sweaters and scarves that are sold in Tibetan business sectors the nation over.

Places to Explore

Padmasambhava mahavira monastery.

This is the premier monastery of Chandragiri. It is a home to 200 priests. The insides of the place are very wonderful with a wide range of tibetan buddhist enhancements. They have got a library with heavenly sacred texts.

The monastery is situated in the midst of the mountains and the most ideal approach to appreciate this religious community is to persuade one regarding the priests to take you to the porch of the monastery. It has a little temple and from that point, you could see the entire green scene, an awesome view that will be the best one you arrive.

You can read our another post on Forest Fire in Odisha: A Devastating Threat to Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Jeerang Stupa

The Stupa is arranged nearly 100 meters from the monastery. The most excellent reality about this spot is that you will never discover any sort of crowd here. In some cases, you may very well discover no vacationers. So every sight you go to will be practically unfilled and enough serene for you to appreciate and feel the air.

The Jeerang Stupa is an excellent stupa encircled by prayer wheels. To watch nightfall from this spot is one of the most astounding things to find.

Padmasambhava’s Statue

This is arranged in another camp and you will require an auto-cart (tuk-tuk) to the following camp. This is another structure developed and is found not at an effectively noticeable area. It is in a path. On the off chance that you ask anybody at this camp, they will show you the path. In any case, when you get the chance to see this structure, you will unquestionably be shocked by its shading, excellence and force.

Tibetan Handicraft Center

Make it a highlight visit the handiwork place, where you will see ladies weaving the popular Tibetan woolen covers and making different crafted works, for example, sacks and incense sticks. You can get a sack for ₹100-200, incense sticks for ₹30 per bundle and a 6×3 ft cover for about ₹8,000.

More: Wanted to download Odishashop.com visit here

Chandragiri

The spot was once notable for Tibetan Apso dogs, yet the number of families reproducing canines is on the decrease. The people group is commonly occupied with development, exchanging and selling woolen articles of clothing.

Chandragiri is a little settlement and there are no enormous cafés in this area, since it never observes a decent measure of sightseers coming here. In any case, there are neighborhood diners where you can discover momos, thukpas, and tingmos.

Outside the principle monastery there is an eatery and they serve astonishing lunch and supper. They don’t have a menu card. They’re simply called “lunch” and “supper”. Yet, in the event that you need to eat from that point, you have to tell them atleast a few hours before lunch or supper time

How to Reach

Via Air : A trip to Bhubaneshwar and afterward a train to Brahmapur Station and from that point, a private vehicle to Chandragiri. If not a private vehicle, a bus from the Brahmapur Bus Station.

Via Train : A train to Brahmapur Station and from that point, a private vehicle to Chandragiri.

Via Car : A private vehicle from Bhubaneshwar or Brahmapur.

JIranga Monastery: The Little Tibet of Odisha

If you are traveling in South Odisha, then you can’t afford to miss Jiranga Monastery which is popularly known as the little Tibet of Odisha. Located in Gajapati district of the state, Jiranga also known as Chandragiri boasts of a sizable Tibetan population thanks to the Chinese invasion of Tibet in !959 that forced religious and political head Dalai Lama and thousands of his followers to take refuge in India. Chandragiri in Gajapati district of Odisha was one of the six sites in India where the Tibetan refugees were settled. Since then Chandragiri or Jiranga has evolved into an area with distinct Tibetan Buddhist character.

Over the years what has become the center of attraction for the visitors in Jiranga is the monastery which was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 2010. The monastery called Padma Sambhava Mahavihara which in Tibetan is known as Thupten Mindolling Monastery is said to be the largest monastery in Estern India.

The Tibetans refer to the entire region as Phuntsokling, which translates to “Land of Happiness and Plenty.” Thus, Jiranga which is endowed with gifts of nature such as forest, hills, valleys and waterfalls has become a major tourist attraction with the JIranga monastery as its epicenter. So, if you happen to be in South Odisha, go and visit this place for sure. I had the good opportunity to visit the monastery last month and it turned out to be an awesome experience.

Journey to Jiranga monastery

JIranga is located at a distance of about 270 kilometers from state capital Bhubaneswar and 100 kilometers from Berhampur, a major city in South Odisha. We started the journey in the morning and followed the Chandiput-Luhagudi road for about 55 kilometers before taking a left turn to meet the NH-326A that goes to Parlakhemundi, the district headquarters of Gajapati district..

The drive was along a dry patch with hardly any vegetation. However, as we approached Taptapani (Hot Spring), the topography started to change as the deserted and dry farmland gave way to forest and occasionally ghat roads. We stopped for a few minutes at Taptapani to see the sulfur springs before resuming our journey to Jiranga monastery.

I can say that the drive from Taptapani to Jiranga monastery is one of the most exciting one in terms of scenic beauty and diverse tourist attractions that I have undertaken in Odisha. We meandered along NH-326A enjoying nature and then suddenly I could sense that we were nearing Chandragiri, a major home of Tibetan settlement in Odisha. Now I could see the colourful flags and prayer banners  adorning the homes and roads that signify Buddhism as we drove past small villages.

Jiranga Monasterty

When we reached Chandragiri, a small town on the national highway, I noticed that the place was quite a departure from a typical Indian town that bears more Tibetan Buddhist character than Indian. We caught a glimpse of some monks in maroon robe riding scooters, their cotton bags, loaded with vegetables. Jiranga monastery is about 10 kilometers from Chandragiri and is situated amidst a beautiful valley.

After a few kilometers drive we left NH-326A by taking a right turn. This road takes you to Jiranga monastery and enroute you can visit Khasada waterfall, a major tourist attraction. This was a typical rural Indian road, part asphalt, part dirt. Large swatches of farmland lined both sides of the road.

We were mesmerized by a beautiful lake as we got closer to the monastery. In the center of it is a statue of Padmasamvaba seated atop a lotus. This lake is surrounded on all sides by the monastery complex and allows tourists to relax on its banks while soaking in the serene atmosphere.

Jiranga Monasterty

JIranga landscape

While driving to the Jiranga monastery you can see that the eastern ghats dominate the skyline of the valley, with hills of different sizes on all sides. Mahendragiri, the second highest peak of Odisha, is only 70 kms away. The sight of the green fields followed by high hills add to the beauty of the region and fills the heart of all visitors to this beautiful valley.

You can notice large areas of farmland on both sides of the road..These farms are mostly used to grow maize as the soil type here is not suitable for paddy cultivation. Maize crop is the main source of income for the Tibetan population here. There is so much maize grown here that Jirang and its adjoining areas have earned the reputation of being the ‘Maize bowl of Odisha’.

History of Jiranga

In 1959, the Chinese invasion and annexation of Tibet led some 85,000 Tibetans, including their religious and political head, the 14th Dalai Lama, to seek refuge in India and other countries. Chandragiri, about 80 kilometers from Berhampur, a southern town in Odisha, was chosen as one of the country’s main six camps.

On May 1, 1963, the first batch of Tibetans arrived at Chandragiri. Since their arrival, they have not only made Chandragiri and the adjoining camps at Labarasingh, Mahendragada, and Tankilipadar (all located within a 4-5 kilometre radius of Chandragiri) their home, but they have also added colour to the picturesque mountains of the Eastern Ghats in this part of Odisha through their enterprise and demeanour.

Realising the need for a spiritual center,  the Dalai Lama accorded the monastery in 1998. The foundation stone was laid in 2003, and the building was finished in 2008 at a cost of approximately Rs 8 crore.

Jiranga Monasterty

The Jiranga Monastery

You can catch the first glimpse of the top of the monastery while still quite far from reaching the place. The top vimana is coloured in gold, the base of which is white. After some climbing you reach the monastery which is said to be the largest in Eastern India. There is no entry fee to visit the monastery while there is a nominal entry fee of Rs 5 to visit the stupa complex.

An elegant gate welcomes you into the huge courtyard, which includes a carefully groomed lawn and big trees of Banyan, palm, and neem thoughtfully planted to offer much-needed shade. The main monastery is located at one end and is flanked on both sides by rows of residential quarters for the monks. Inaugurated by His Highness Dalai Lama in 2010, the monastery was built at a cost of Rs 8 crores.

The main temple

The design of the main temple of the monastery follows the Atanpuri style of architecture of Nalanda by architects from Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan assisted by local masons. The structure is 70 feet high  and has five stories.  It houses a 23 feet high Buddha statue and a 17 feet Buddha Padmasambhava. You can see beautiful murals on the walls which depict nature, various stages of Buddha’s life, and different animals.

The ceiling of the structure is dominated by colourful paintings of mountains, animals, lotus, clouds, and waterfalls – all motifs of Tibetan art – as well as various mandalas’ that symbolize soul transformation. There are also paintings of the phoenix and dragon, which signify the universe’s opposite, but complementing forces. It is clear that underneath these works of art is a complicated set of beliefs that claim to lead a soul to the path of enlightenment.

The main temple also has the inner sanctum that constitutes the meditation hall where sits a 23-foot bronze statue of Lord Buddha, flanked by 17-foot-high statues of Lord Avalokitesavara and Lord Padmasambhava on either side. The walls are filled with beautifully coloured murals of Buddha and Bodhisattvas, animals, the sun and moon, mandalas, and mantras. Most of the paintings have a golden tone that makes them stand out on the wall.

The Hostels for monks

Apart from the main temple, the monastery also houses some residential quarters for students. There are about 200-300 monks presently residing at the monastery for their spiritual study of Tibetan Buddhism. They are not all from Tibet; rather, the most came from different parts of India, such as Sikkim and Darjeeling, who have come to study Buddhism. They usually come here at a young age and stay until they complete their studies, at which point they can choose to stay or move to any other Buddhist temple.

The Stupas of Jiranga

The architecture of Tibetan monasteries is divided into two parts: the main temple, known as Gompas, while the other part is known as the stupas. You have already seen the Gompa, which was the monastery, and it is now time to see the stupas.

After leaving the monastery, you have to walk a good 100 meters to reach the stupa complex.. This walled area has eight stupas arranged in a circular pattern and flanked by colourful prayer flags. Traditionally, these flags have been used to symbolise peace, wisdom, compassion, and strength. Tibetans believe that the prayers and mantras will be carried by the wind and spread goodwill and compassion.

Jiranga Monasterty

The stupas refer to major events in Lord Buddha’s life as explained in Tibetan Buddhism. The Stupa of Enlightenment, the tallest of them all, stands in the centre, symbolizing Lord Buddha’s attainment of enlightenment when he conquered worldly temptations.

You can see the prayer wheels or dharma chakra in different parts of the Stupa complex. One of them is particularly huge, enclosed within a canopy and a few smaller ones, bordering the periphery of the largest stupa.

Travel Tips

  • Jiranga is around 260 kilometers from Bhubaneswar and approximately 90 kilometers from the Silk City of Berhampur. There are frequent private and government bus services available from Bhubaneswar to Berhampur. You can take a bus from Berhampur to Chandragiri or hire a taxi to get here. The Biju Patnaik International Airport in BHubaneswar is the nearest airport some 270 kilometers away while Berhampur railway station is the nearest railhead.
  • There are not many options for accommodation in Jiranga, though the monastery has a guest house called RIpa guest house. If you want to stay enroute Jiranga, then the guest house at Taptapani managed by OTDC is the best option. According to the latest information, the guest house is now run by a private party. But it is always a good idea to stay at Berhampur which has a lot of options for your comfortable stay according to your budget.
  • Jiranga can be visited at any time of the year, But, the winter months from October to February is the most suitable time due to the pleasant climate.
  • Don’t miss to purchase the local produce like maize, local ginger and the millets like Bajra and Ragi. These are produced in plenty in the JIranga valley and you will find small outlets in the road sides of the villages. These are pure stuff and the price is also quite reasonable. Jiranga is known as the maize bowl of Odisha and thus the ‘maize atta’ is the most popular and it sells like hot cake.
  • During your drive from Berhampur to Jiranga Monastery you will come across a few tourist attractions which deserve a visit. Do stop and spend some time at the sulfur springs (hot water spring) at Taptapani and the picturesquely located Khasada waterfall. You can also think of visiting Gandahati waterfall which is about 70 kilometers away from JIranga.

Where Happiness & Peace Are A Way of Life

Odisha’s Little Tibet- is not as well-known as the abode of his holiness the Dalai Lama at Mcleodganj in Dharamsala and Majnu ka Tila in Delhi, but it offered the Tibetan settler’s a home nevertheless after China invaded Tibet in 1959. Chandragiri was designated as camp no.4 for settlement of Tibetan’s.

The first batch of Tibetan’s arrived in Chandragiri on 1st May 1963. Since arriving they have not only made Chandragiri and the adjoining camps at Labarasingh, Mahendragadh, Tankilipadar (all located at a radius of 4-5 KM around Chandragiri) their home, but through their enterprise and demeanor added colour to the picturesque mountains of the Eastern Ghats in this part of Odisha. The Tibetan’s have named this place “Phuntsokling”– which means land of plenty and happiness.

The major attraction is the Padmasambhava Monastery popularly known as the Jirang Monastery. It is the largest monastery in Eastern India. The monastery was inaugurated by His Holiness The Dalai Lama in 2010. It is a residence cum college for budding Buddhist monks who come from all over India here to study.

The Avalokiteswara statue in a sitting position at Mahedragad is another attraction along with the Monastery at Labarasingh. Don’t miss the peace pagoda at the entrance of Camp No. 4.

The Tibetan’s are helpful to the outsiders and tourists, please be polite with them.

A Trip to Jirang - The Tibet of Odisha

Photo of Aditya Kumar Sahoo

Ever since I was at home, I have been inching to explore different parts of Odisha. I have never enjoyed visiting places like a typical tourist; time-bound and always in a hurry not to miss any important landmarks. I like my vacations slow-paced and leisurely, and what better way to do so than a road-trip in my own new car!

I had heard of this place called Jirang and was very interested to visit it. Its a small town nestled in the hills of Chandragiri, located in the Gajapati district of Odisha about 270 kms from the capital Bhubaneswar. Its one of the settlements of the Tibetan refugees in India. The Tibetans call this place Phuntsokling ("Land of Happiness and Plenty"). South Asia's largest Buddhist monastery is situated here - the Padma Sambhava Maha Vihara monastery. On the same route is the Chilika lake. So I and my wife decided to have an extended weekend getaway in Jirang and Rambha.

This is what I wanted to see!

Google Maps to the rescue!

There are not much options of accomodation at Jirang. There is a Tibetan guest-house, but we weren't sure of that. So we booked our room at OTDC Panthanivas at Taptapani, which is about 40kms from Jirang. For Chilika lake, bookings were done at OTDC Panthanivas at Rambha.

Chapter 1 - Taptapani

“ It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to ” - Bilbo Baggins, Lord of the Rings

We started our journey from Bhubaneswar early morning on Friday. I  looking at the road ahead near the hills of Khorda, while we were having breakfast. This was supposed to be a monsoon trip, but the skies were clear and beautiful!

Post lunch we went exploring nearby. There was a deer park right next to the panthanivas. The deers are accustomed to be fed by the visitors and so quite a few came near us. But unfortunately we didn't have any food for them.

Taptapani means "hot water" in Odiya. This place has a small hot water spring where tourists bathe, but we didn't.

Jiranga Buddhists Monastery

Chapter 2 - Jirang

Next morning on Saturday, we left Taptapani panthanivas for Jirang, which was 40 kms away We knew we were getting closer when we started seeing the Buddhist prayer flags on the road and in private residences. Beautiful roads, lush green fields on either side, mountains in the distance. Reached the Padma Sambhava Maha Vihara monastery. Prayer flags fluttering in the wind. These flags are traditionally used to promote peace, wisdom, compassion, and strength. Tibetans believe the wind will blow the prayers and mantras in to the surroundings, spreading goodwill and compassion. The colors on the flags represents the 5 elements - Blue for sky or space, White for air or clouds, Red for fire or sun, Green for water or nature and Yellow for earth.

Standing 70ft high, the monastery was designed by architects from Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. It was built by the local masons over 6 years, at a cost of Rs. 8 crore.

Spread over an area of 10 acres and constructed in Atanpuri style of architecture of Nalanda, the monastery houses around 200 monks.

This is one of the religious hill stations in Odisha. We know it sounds weird but here are the reasons. Known for the sacristy, the Devagiri Range features a religious cave temple at a height of above 400 meters from the sea level. The cave temple has huge mythological and religious significance. Though it is mainly visited for pilgrimage purposes, the way leading to the cave temple is quite adventurous. There is nothing man made involved in the building process of the temple, and even the staircases are made of natural rock-cut formations. If you happen to visit during Maha Shivratri, you can witness the festive fervor here.

Trip To Visit Jirang Monastery- The Tibet Of Odisha

“You cannot travel the path until you have become the path itself” — Buddha

I love to visit different places and explore the new things but when your plan worked out so well it happens to be much more than a great trip!

Buddhism which started as an off shoot of Hinduism in India, has spread across the world to become the 4th largest religion in the world. There are many Buddhist monasteries in India which preach the peaceful teachings of Buddha.

One such monastery is in Southern Odisha in Jirang. It is nearly 80-85 kms from the town of Berhampur. So, me and my cousins set out on a journey on our Car to find Lord Buddha.

Here comes our first destination i.e. Taptapani-Hot Spring which is about 16km from the Gajpati district.

About Taptapani

Taptapani Enterance

Taptapani is a naturally formed hot water sulfur spring. The original spring is worshipped as a local deity and has found mentions in many folktales as well. This area was part of the Kalinga empire from ancient times.which is about 16km from the Gajapati district. The name Tapta means hot, The hot water from the natural spring of taptapani are attributed with medicinal properties that can be a bath in at the pond created next to the hot spring.

We went inside the temple, took some beautiful pictures

Taptapani

Now, headed towards our next destination i.e. Jirang-The Tibet of Odisha

About Jirang

Jirang Monastery

Jirang is a place in odisha which is famous for its beautiful Buddhist monastery. It is also known as Padma Samvab Mahavihara. It is the largest Buddhist monastery in Eastern India. It is located in Chandragiri, Gajapati district, Odisha state.

The monastery inaugurated by tibetan guru Dalai Lama in 2010. It is a residence-cum-college for budding Buddhist monks who come from all over India to study.

In 1959 during the occupation of Tibet by China lots of Tibetans seek shelter in India and nearby place. At that time Chandragiri was chosen as one of their main settlement camp for all Tibetan refugee.

Jirang Monastery

Then I reached our final destination for that day i.e. Khasada waterfall.

About Khasada Waterfall

Odisha is home to a number of beaches and a large number of stunning waterfalls. Khasada waterfall is one of those waterfalls which has a beautiful view and would be admired by nature-lovers. This region has very attractive surroundings and the rolling hills can be seen here. The place is very quiet and has peaceful and relaxing surroundings.

Khasada named because of the slippery nature of rocks. literally, we used to take the support of each other while walking on the rocks. it was damm slippery!

This is an ideal destination for nature lovers and for those interested in photography. This location would be a fun place for a picnic and for trekking.

Khasada Waterfall

As soon as I reached the khasada waterfall, it starts raining, and now it’s time to go for a waterfall bath. The falling of the water, after the first shock is over, gives an indescribable feeling of pleasure, by its constant beating. I had so much fun there. After having a bath, I decided to go into the cab like this only(as I was all wet because of the rain) My driver was so cooperative that he allowed to enter his cab in wet clothes. I was very thankful to him. Now as I was so hungry, I was desperately looking for Dhaba to have lunch there, now finally I found a Dhaba after waiting so long and had a perfect lunch there.

Khasada Waterfall

My driver has informed about a deer park which is just near that Dhaba and then I decided to go there as well. I went there it was 5’ o clock in the evening and deer park was about to close but anyhow I reached on time and went inside the park. I took so many pictures there .it was much more beautiful.

Deer Park

finally, I get back to the cab and headed towards Berhampur. I played Dumb charades in-cab, enjoyed a lot throughout the journey. I had a perfect day just not because the places visited are so beautiful but my plan to visit all these places in a single day has worked out very well.

I hope my experience will help you in some way

i will recommend everyone to go there once and have fun!
