Chelsea tickets for US tour: Schedule, dates, host cities

chelsea pre season tour dates

American fans will have the chance to see Chelsea as tickets are available for more friendlies in the US tour in 2024. It will be the Premier League side’s third consecutive visit Stateside after previously making the trip in 2022 and 2023. The Blues are scheduled to play five total fixtures across the country throughout July and August. This is currently more matches in the U.S. than any other European club.

Top English teams typically play their summer friendlies abroad to reach more fans and, in turn, create additional revenue. With the 2024 Copa America and 2026 FIFA World Cup tournaments set to be played in North America, a trip to the States this summer makes sense for these teams. Chelsea also has ownership ties to the United States as well. The Blues are currently co-owned by American billionaire Todd Boehly.

Chelsea’s preseason schedule during their tour of the United States:

  • Chelsea vs Wrexham – July 24, time TBD – Santa Clara, CA: Tickets .
  • Celtic vs Chelsea – July 27, 10 AM – South Bend, IN: Tickets .
  • Chelsea vs Club America – July 31, 7 PM – Atlanta, GA: Tickets .
  • Manchester City vs Chelsea – August 3, time TBD – Columbus, OH: Tickets .
  • Real Madrid vs Chelsea – August 6, time TBD – Charlotte, NC: Tickets .

Chelsea will travel from coast to coast in preseason preparations

The west London side will kick off its preseason fixture list with a matchup against Wrexham in Santa Clara, California on July 24th. Although a fairly small team, the Welsh side has gained significant popularity across the globe in recent years due to the hit FX show Welcome to Wrexham. The matchup will be played at Levi’s Stadium, the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers. The arena was erected in 2014 and has a maximum capacity of around 68,000 fans.

Chelsea will then face Scottish powerhouse Celtic at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. The reigning Scottish Premiership champions have collected their domestic title an impressive 53 times in their illustrious history. Notre Dame’s historic football arena opened over 90 years ago and currently holds just over 77,000 people.

A matchup against Club America will take place on the final day of July. The Mexican club is the most prestigious team in the entire nation. After all, no other Mexican team has collected more Liga MX or CONCACAF Champions League titles than the Eagles. This particular fixture is at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The state-of-the-art arena was opened in 2017 and can hold up to 73,000 fans for soccer games.

Blues finish off their lengthy stay in the States with two tough matchups

Chelsea will then travel north to face a familiar foe on Aug. 3. The Blues are playing current European champions Manchester City in Columbus, Ohio. The midwestern city does have a Major League Soccer team, the upcoming friendly is at Ohio Stadium instead. The arena, typically referred to as ‘The Horseshoe’ due to its construction, is the current home of the Ohio State University football team. This stadium is now over 100 years old and has a maximum capacity of 100,000 people.

The Blues will then finish off their tour of the United States by facing Real Madrid in Charlotte, North Carolina. Chelsea most recently played the Spanish giants in last season’s quarterfinal of the UEFA Champions League . Los Blancos managed to beat the Blues 4-0 on aggregate at the time. The summer friendly is at Bank of America Stadium, the home of the NFL team the Carolina Panthers.

These five fixtures, however, are far from the only marquee matchups featuring European clubs in America this summer. Many top teams from across the continent are also venturing across the pond for preseason preparations.

Chelsea Pre-Season Fixtures and Results: Dates, Times and Locations

Chelsea will be heading to the United States and Italy for their pre-season, where they are scheduled to play matches against Club America, Charlotte FC, Arsenal and Udinese.

Having signed the US Men’s national team captain Christian Pulisic three years ago, the Blues’ attacker will enjoy a homecoming tour which will see the club visit at least four states.

Chelsea’s latest arrival Raheem Sterling sealed his £50m Stamford Bridge switch from Premier League champions Manchester City and will link up with his new teammates across the Atlantic.

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of how Chelsea’s pre-season will operate:

Chelsea Pre-Season Fixtures

  • Chelsea vs Club America – 17 July, Las Vegas
  • Chelsea vs Charlotte FC – 21 July, Charlotte
  • Chelsea vs Arsenal – 23 July, Orlando
  • Chelsea vs Udinese – 29 July, Udine

Chelsea Pre-Season Locations

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel requested that his players to return for pre-season on 2 July with his international players coming back a week later on 9 July. The Blues are currently in the midst of a week-long pre-season training camp at UCLA’s world-class sporting facilities, where the club have trained in previous years.

The west Londoners will then make the short trip to Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium to open their pre-season with a match against Club America, Mexico’s most successful club team. Chelsea last faced the Club America 13 years ago in Texas when goals from Franco Di Santo and Florent Malouda sealed a 2-0 victory.

Chelsea then travel East across the country to North Carolina and Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium to face the MLS side, who currently sit seventh in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte FC is the newest expansion team in MLS, having only been in existence since February 2022.

Next they will fly south to Orlando where they will meet London and Premier League rivals Arsenal in the Camping World Stadium. Both sides will go head-to-head to win the so-called ‘Florida Cup’. The Gunners have won four of the last five meetings between the two clubs.

After heading back to Europe, Chelsea face Serie A side Udinese in Italy in a final friendly in July. The two teams met in preseason 21 years ago, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring and being sent off in a 1-1 draw.

Chelsea Pre-Season Dates

Chelsea kick off their pre-season campaign against Club America on Sunday 17th of July, although technically it will still be the 16th in Las Vegas where the game is being played.

Four days later on the East Coast of the USA the Blues face MLS new boys Charlotte FC on Thursday 21st of July.

Then there’s a gap of just two days before Chelsea face off against rivals Arsenal in Florida in an evening kick-off which takes place on Saturday the 23rd of July.

Six days later on Friday the 29th of July, Chelsea will be the guests of Udinese in Italy as they bring the curtain down on their pre-season games.

Chelsea Pre-Season Times

Chelsea will line-up against Club America in a game that kicks off at just about the most awkward time possible for supporters back in the UK. The Las Vegas clash gets underway at 3:00am BST, which equates to 7:00pm local time.

Against Charlotte, the referee will whistle to get the game underway at midnight BST (7:00pm local time).

The kick off in Orlando for the friendly against Arsenal is set to take place at 7:00pm local time, which means another late night for fans of both London clubs as that also equates to midnight in the UK.

The game against Udinese is more convenient for Blues fans in the UK as it will take place at 8:00pm BST which is just one hour later local time at 9:00pm.

Chelsea Squad For Pre-Season

Goalkeepers: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Marcus Bettinelli, Edouard Mendy,

Chelsea will again travel to the USA this month as part of their pre-season schedule. The Blues spent the summer of 2022 in the United States under Thomas Tuchel but the trip did not go to plan.

Now, under Mauricio Pochettino, the west Londoners will prepare for the 2023/24 season Stateside after recording their worst finish in the Premier League last term.

The tour last year made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. "It's quite a challenge after change already the third time the location," Tuchel said. "A lot of travelling, another time zone, a totally different feeling of temperature, huge humidity, so very demanding for first training and the players are struggling with the heat.

"We give maybe more time and space to drink – more break – but we can’t hide from the fact we’re in pre-season and we have to, somehow, put kilometres into the legs. From this point, we don’t adapt."

Here, football.london brings you up-to-date with all the information ahead of Chelsea's tour of the USA.

Arsenal and Chelsea announce additional dates to U.S. pre-season tour with matches in D.C.

The two wsl powerhouses will face off in a cross-atlantic derby, in addition to matches vs. nwsl teams gotham and washington spirit.

It's official: Two of England's biggest clubs are crossing the pond this summer. Arsenal and Chelsea Women, along with the Washington Spirit, announced Monday that the WSL powerhouses are adding a stop in Washington D.C. to their preseason United States tour.

As part of the stop, Arsenal will play a friendly against the Spirit on August 18. On August 25, the Spirit will host both English clubs for a historic double-header: The Spirit will face the Kansas City Current for a regular-season match, followed by a cross-Atlantic derby between Arsenal and Chelsea in Washington's Audi Field.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS🚨 The Washington Spirit welcomes @ArsenalWFC & @ChelseaFCW to Audi Field this August! https://t.co/2Z89Ad9Oqh — Washington Spirit (@WashSpirit) June 10, 2024

The two matches are in addition to Chelsea's friendly against NJ/NY Gotham FC in Red Bull Arena on August 19, which was announced last month. The preseason matches will also be Chelsea's first under new head coach Sonia Bompastor, who left Lyon to replace current USWNT coach Emma Hayes .

The matches, first reported by ESPN last month, will represent both Chelsea and Arsenal's first forays into the States.

Chelsea’s pre-season tour begins on July 19 - get full schedule

Chelsea’s 2023 pre-season tour will see them play five friendly games in the United States.

chelsea pre season tour dates

After an underwhelming campaign that saw them finish 12th last season, Chelsea will be eager to set things right in the 2023-24 Premier League season.

They will be eager to get a good pre-season under their belt ahead of the start of their league campaign .

The Blues are slated to kickstart their pre-season 2023 tour in America with a friendly against newly-promoted League Two side Wrexham at the Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Wednesday, July 19.

Soon after their friendly against Wrexham, Chelsea have three pre-season games lined up against Premier League outfits.

The first of these pre-season games against their Premier League rivals will see Chelsea taking on Brighton, who finished sixth in the standings last season and will prove to be a good test for the Blues.

Chelsea are set to face the Seagulls at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 22.

Next up for Chelsea is a friendly encounter against UEFA Champions League-bound Newcastle United at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Thursday, July 27.

Chelsea’s fourth friendly in their 2023 pre-season tour in America pits them against their west London rivals Fulham at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland on Sunday, July 30.

The two-time UEFA Champions League winner’s final pre-season game is slated to take place at Solider Field, Chicago on Wednesday, August 2 against German giants Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues will be hoping that their squad can make the most of these friendly games and that their players can gel after a summer overhaul that saw plenty of players leave the club, while a few additions were also made.

In terms of incomings, former RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku has already joined Chelsea and will be a part of their pre-season tour.

Chelsea’s list of departures is a lot longer with Joao Felix, Denis Zakaria, N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, and Kai Havertz, all no longer with the club.

Seven talking points from Chelsea's US pre-season tour

C helsea ended their pre-season tour of the United States talking about fixing their defensive issues after a 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid .

The Blues travelled around the US and played a gruelling five matches in five states in 18 days, winning once, drawing once, losing three times and conceding 12 goals.

Here are seven talking points from a tour that has taken Chelsea from Santa Clara to Charlotte.

1. An unchanged transfer approach?

Chelsea have not lost confidence in their youth-first approach despite two underwhelming years under the new Todd Boehly-Clearlake ownership, which has seen them fail to qualify for Europe in the first season, and only qualify for the Uefa Conference League in a second, improved season.

The Blues have spent about £115m on eight players with an average age of under 21 - Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Estevao Willian, Marc Guiu, Filip Jorgensen, Renato Veiga, Omari Kellyman and Caleb Wiley.

That average could go even younger as Chelsea are expected to sign 18-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders from Gento and 20-year-old striker Samu Omorodion from Atletico Madrid.

In terms of big name signings, there is also interest in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who could be involved in a swap arrangement with Romelu Lukaku.

Social media graphics of their 45-man senior squad - which includes seven registered goalkeepers - have gained traction this week.

But there remains a belief inside Chelsea that - despite widespread criticism of the club's transfer activity - this approach will ultimately reap rewards for Chelsea, BlueCo as a whole, and RC Strasbourg who are part of the multi-club group.

2. Chelsea's change of style

Chelsea are set to implement a new, slower and possession-based style of football under Enzo Maresca.

This has already been apparent in the club's pre-season tour of the US and it demands players adapt to the manager's approach, rather than him adapt to his players.

It has meant teams on tour, like Manchester City and Celtic, have been able to force mistakes as players struggle to adapt to high-risk moves playing out from the back.

In fact, half the 12 goals conceded in pre-season were from mistakes playing out from the back, including three of the four against City.

There are also problems with the players naturally defaulting to a high defensive line without pressing well or with intensity, a feature of the play Maresca blames on "habit from last year".

Other features of the tactics are underlapping full-backs, man-to-man marking and two very high number eights occupying spaces in a five-man attack.

The high risk, high reward style carries the same core principles evident in the Italian's Championship title-winning Leicester team last season.

Interestingly, these principles are supposed to be implemented across the club and into BlueCo with RC Strasbourg - maintained even if there is a need to change the manager again in the future.

One of the reasons Mauricio Pochettino left by mutual consent was due to a difference in opinion on the club's long-term tactical identity.

3. Nkunku set to become Chelsea's key man

Christopher Nkunku has played 398 minutes, more than any other player during the tour and looks set to have a starring role this season - if he can stay fit.

Like last summer, the Frenchman again excelled in pre-season and netted three goals in five matches on tour, playing in several different positions, including as a striker and central midfielder.

Last summer, Nkunku suffered a knee injury in the final match, which began a chain of different injuries to limit him to just two starts last season.

Nkunku said he wants to stay fit first and see where his football takes him, admitting that he is still "not 100%".

But Maresca clearly likes the versatile star and said: “Christopher [Nkunku] was injured for almost all of last season but I knew from Germany how good he is. He has surprised me but it is not a big [surprise]."

4. Too many matches and too much travel?

Maresca was asked by BBC Sport whether the tour schedule was optimal preparation and he said: "Five games in [14 days] and 17 or 18 days in total is a lot.

"We didn't prepare the games with the training session like we are used to doing during a normal season. Some of the games, we just prepared with a video or the tactical board.

"For me, the real pre-season has been the two weeks at Cobham and the week or 10 days we have [next]. Here, it has been a mixed feeling."

Midfielder Moises Caicedo also joined Maresca in criticising some of the pitches they played on in the US as "not so good" and "so dry".

At least this summer Chelsea avoided picking up any injuries while on tour.

5. Reece James or Malo Gusto as full-backs become talking point

Malo Gusto will begin the season at right-back as Reece James serves a three-match ban in the Premier League for a red card sustained in the penultimate match of last season.

But James and Gusto will have to co-exist and both, at times, have struggled to adapt to the demands of being a full-back for Maresca.

In Maresca's system, one full-back typically becomes inverted and steps into central midfield and the other sits back to defend as a third central defender, which turns a back four into a back three.

James should be capable of performing either role but has struggled as he also builds fitness after an injury-hit season.

Gusto has also struggled and has played a left-back three times, with Levi Colwill also tried out in the role as Marc Cucurella recovers from Euro 2024.

Maresca has admitted that some of his unusual team selections have come as he looks to "experiment" in pre-season, but left-back Ben Chilwell has played just 64 minutes and in two matches from the bench, raising new questions about whether he could be sold.

The addition of new goalkeeper Jorgensen from Villarreal is also interesting as the Blues wanted a specialist at playing out from the back to compete with Robert Sanchez, but it has left Djordje Petrovic likely to be pushed out of the club, at least in the short-term on loan.

The atmosphere around the squad seemed broadly positive under Maresca but such is the pace of signings, representatives around several players admit uncertainty around their futures left them feeling insecure.

6. Fernandez and Gallagher make headlines

The two controversial subject of pre-season have been around midfielders Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher.

Fernandez faces no further action after an internal investigation at Chelsea, but continues to be investigated by Fifa, having been accused of being racist for singing an offensive song after winning the Copa America.

The ongoing Fifa investigation could still lead to a significant domestic ban.

A meeting in Atlanta with the French players affected - including defender Wesley Fofana who had criticised Fernandez publicly - is said to have gone well, with Maresca saying the players had "all accepted" Fernandez’s apology, allowing Chelsea to re-integrate their £107m signing into the squad.

Fernandez will likely be targeted by boos from fans of other clubs next season but there is little chance of him leaving Stamford Bridge - and he was made captain against Real Madrid after Reece James was substituted.

Gallagher, meanwhile, wasn't involved in Chelsea's pre-season having been given a break after Euro 2024.

But Gallagher's potential sale to Atletico Madrid was a major talking point among supporters, many of whom seemed upset to lose another homegrown star.

7. What is the target for Maresca's first season?

The hiring and firing of managers that characterised Chelsea's previous ownership under Roman Abramovich hasn't changed under their American consortium.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti urged his former club to show patience with Maresca when interviewed by BBC Sport before the two sides met in Chelsea's final pre-season.

Chelsea have belief that Maresca can stop that cycle, evidenced by his five-year deal, compared to the two-year deal given to Pochettino last summer.

There is an expectation that Chelsea should be able to qualify for the Champions League, given they only fell short by six points last season amid huge injury problems.

There will be some leeway if Maresca doesn't hit that target but can show progress in other areas like winning cup competitions, developing players or if mitigating circumstances, like injuries, again become a major factor.

Chelsea are minded to be patient but that's not a word the club has been known for.

Chelsea pre-season 2023/24: Fixtures and schedule

  • Mauricio Pochettino takes charge of first Chelsea pre-season
  • Blues will travel to the US to face Wrexham, Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund
  • Club finished 12th in Premier League last season

By James Cormack | Jul 24, 2023, 2:35 PM GMT+1

Mauricio Pochettino will take charge of his first pre-season as Chelsea boss

Todd Boehly's unprecedented cash influx is yet to pay dividends in west London, with three managers (four if you count brief interim Bruno Saltor) succumbing under the American's watch. Now, it's Mauricio Pochettino's turn.

2022/23 was Chelsea's least productive campaign of the Premier League era as they finished 12th with a poultry 44 points. Despite the seemingly endless stream of cash at the club's disposal, Poch's task is a mammoth one. The Blues' squad last season, while talented, was woefully unbalanced and it's going to take more than the current transfer window to sort things out.

Nevertheless, as is the case for every new manager, pre-season is significant for Pochettino. Here's what we know about Chelsea's summer plans so far.

Where are Chelsea going for 2023/24 pre-season?

LONDON CALLING! Chelsea are coming to the USA! 🇺🇸 The Blues kick-off their 2023 pre-season tour with 3 games across the @PremierLeague Summer Series! Further fixtures and locations to be announced. 👀 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) April 11, 2023

Chelsea confirmed earlier this year they would travel to the United States to compete in the new Premier League Summer Series .

The Blues have frequently visited the US in the past, including last summer, and they'll be one of six clubs competing in a brand new pre-season event that will take place across five major East Coast cities.

However, their first unofficial game under Pochettino was a 5-0 thrashing of National League champions Wrexham , where Ian Maatsen netted twice and new signing Christopher Nkunku also got on the scoresheet.

In their first Summer Series game, Chelsea were triumphant 4-3 over Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton as Nicolas Jackson provided a glimpse of his potential, scoring once and setting up two more. Nkunku, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher also struck after Brighton, who had defender Jan Paul van Hecke sent off, had taken the lead through Danny Welbeck. Joao Pedro's penalty and another late effort from Deniz Undaz ran the Blues close until full time.

Chelsea also take on fellow Premier League outfits Newcastle and Fulham as part of the tournament. They round off their trip to the US with a clash with Borussia Dortmund in Chicago.
