Empire of the Sun Returns: New Album and North American Tour Announced
24th June, 2024
June 24, 2024 – Fans of Empire of the Sun have a lot to celebrate as the electro-pop duo announced a series of North American headline shows for the first time since their 2019 Walking On A Dream 10th Anniversary tour.
The dynamic duo, known for their mesmerising live performances and anthemic hits, will take the stage at Guadalajara’s Auditorio Telmex on November 19, the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on November 23 (with NEIL FRANCES opening), and Brooklyn’s King’s Theatre on November 26.
Tickets for the general public will be available on Friday, June 28, at 10:00 AM local time.
Adding to the excitement, Empire of the Sun is set to perform at Corona Capital 2024 in Mexico City on November 17, just before kicking off their headline shows.
The tour announcement comes hand in hand with news of their first new album in eight years, Ask That God , slated for release on July 26 through Capitol Records.
This marks a significant return for Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, who have been the creative forces behind Empire of the Sun since their debut album, Walking On A Dream , in 2008.
Their previous albums, Ice On The Dune (2013) and Two Vines (2016), have helped cement their reputation as pioneers in the electro-pop genre.
The forthcoming album Ask That God is now available for pre-order and promises to be a sonic journey with tracks like Cherry Blossom , which reflects on the beauty and wonder around us, “Music On The Radio,” and “Changes.”
Critics are already buzzing about the new music, with Consequence of Sound calling “Music On The Radio” a “bass-heavy psychedelic jam,” and Popdust praising it as “light, catchy, and refreshing.”
Billboard noted “Changes” for its classic Empire of the Sun feel, featuring a danceable beat and joyful synths.

Empire Of The Sun announce first UK show in three years
They'll be playing The Roundhouse in October
Empire Of The Sun have announced a one-off London gig for next month – their first UK live appearance in three years.
The Australian electro duo are gearing up to release their third album ‘Two Vines’ on 28 October, and will launch the record with a show at The Roundhouse in Camden on 13 October. Renowned for their theatrical and choreographed stage show, this will be their first UK outing since 2013.
Preceded by the comeback single ‘High And Low’, ‘Two Vines’ is the follow-up to 2013’s ‘ Ice On The Dune ‘ – and features members of Fleetwood Mac, as well as the former band of Prince and David Bowie .
Nick Littlemore told Pitchfork: ““There was an image we talked about very early on with this record, before we wrote the title track, ‘Two Vines,’ and that was this image of a modern city overtaken by jungle, almost like mother nature taking back the planet.”
He added: “All the buildings will turn back to sand. All it will be is nature again. We wanted to make something that reflected the beauty of that, and the wisdom that plants can give us about living harmoniously on this beautiful planet.”
Empire of The Sun play The Roundhouse in London on 13 October. Tickets are on sale from 10am on 28 September.

Empire of the Sun rises again with a tour in support of Ask That God , the forthcoming fourth studio album by the electro-pop outfit from Down Under.
Led by Luke Steele (frontman of indie-rock act The Sleepy Jackson ) and Lord Littlemore (Nick Littlemore of electronic trio PNAU), Empire of the Sun will embark on a tour of Australia, kicking off October 24 at Hordern Pavilion, Sydney, before visiting Melbourne and Brisbane and wrapping November 1 with a show at Red Hill Auditorium, in Steele’s hometown, Perth.
The national trek, produced by Frontier Touring, is the first announced in support of Ask That God , the group’s first album in eight years. Additional international shows are yet to be announced.

‘pre-millennium tension’: how tricky challenged expectations to find artistic freedom, the dare announces debut album, ‘what’s wrong with new york’.
“ Ask That God is an album we searched for and were thankfully blessed with. We are nothing more than conduits, gathering experience and finding what is meant for the Empire to find,” Steele said in a statement.
Since their breakthrough debut album from 2008, Walking On A Dream , which housed the title track and “We Are The People,” Empire of the Sun has collected eight ARIA Awards (including four at the 2009 ceremony), two APRA Music Awards, an APRA Billions Award, and collected 7.6 billion streams, according to EMI.
“Walking On A Dream” belatedly became a U.S. hit in 2016, peaking at No. 65, after hitching a ride with a Honda Civic campaign. The track would become a U.S. chart leader, hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs, for their second leader after 2013’s “Alive” – a song that was released five years after “Walking on a Dream.” Empire of the Sun would also preside over the Billboard + Clio Music’s Top Commercials chart for successive months in the United States, where the single is now platinum certified.
Empire Of The Sun’s Ask That God will be released on July 26 via Capitol Records . The album has been billed as “a holistic musical adventure where imagination and reality blur and the surreal reigns supreme.”
“It has been a journey unlike any other that Empire Of The Sun has undertaken. We always ‘go there’ when it comes to exploration of both the self and the outside world,” says Littlemore. “This body of work represents the greatest shift in consciousness our world has ever seen and that’s reflected in the music.”

Empire Of The Sun have laid out plans for their first album in eight years.
The long-awaited follow-up to 2016's 'Two Vines' is titled 'Ask That God' and will arrive through Capitol Records on July 26. The Australian duo returned with Changes , the first single from the record, in April, and now they've dropped a second dancey bop in the form of Music On The Radio, which offers their signature dreamy, synth-led electro-pop sound. Vocalist and main songwriter Luke Steele commented:
"'Ask That God' is an album we searched for and were thankfully blessed with. We are nothing more than conduits, gathering experience and finding what is meant for the Empire to find. "To me this song is like a teenager rebelling against his imaginary emotions. It’s penned in only that unique way Lord Littlemore can bring words to life. The bass wraps it’s arms around you in some kind of hypnotic groove and you’re powerless to its charms."
Producer Nick Littlemore added: "It has been a journey unlike any other that Empire Of The Sun has undertaken. We always ‘go there’ when it comes to exploration of both the self and the outside world. This body of work represents the greatest shift in consciousness our world has ever seen and that ’s reflected in the music."

Empire of the Sun, the visionary Australian electronic duo comprising Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, have been making waves across the world with phenomenal live shows and anthemic smash hits for the last decade as one of Australia’s most successful musical exports.
With Steele's background in The Sleepy Jackson and Littlemore's founding role in PNAU, the duo embarked on a sonic odyssey that has captivated audiences worldwide. Since their emergence, Empire of the Sun has transcended boundaries, blending alternative electronica with mesmerizing visuals to create an immersive musical experience unlike any other.
Their seminal debut album, Walking On A Dream, which the musicians described as "a spiritual road movie" spawned iconic singles “Walking On A Dream” and “We Are The People”. The critically acclaimed second LP, disco-pop Ice On The Dune featured “Alive” and “DNA” and saw the band tour the world. Third LP "Two Vines," saw the band welcoming guests like Lindsey Buckingham, members of David Bowie's band from the Blackstar sessions, and Wendy Melvoin from Prince & the Revolution and featured singles “High And Low” and“Way To Go”.
Their chart success extends far beyond their native Australia, with their albums achieving multi-platinum certifications across the globe. 8 years since their last LP, 2024 sees the dawn of a new era.

Taylor Swift kicks off UK shows in London, snaps selfies with Prince William and family
by Associated Press
LONDON (AP) — As pop superstar Taylor Swift brings her blockbuster Eras Tour to London's Wembley Stadium this weekend, some Swifties therefore are wondering if they are witnessing the beginning of an extended goodbye.
London isn't ready to see her go. The area around Wembley was transformed for the shows, with fans posing in front of a giant mural of the singer and traveling stairs christened "Swiftie Steps" and other tributes.
Swift announced that 88,446 people were in attendance at Friday's show in what she called "the most exhilarating city in the world."
Among the famous attendees: Prince William celebrating his 42nd birthday at the show and posing for photos with Swift along with two of his children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
Swift gave fans a wink and a nod toward her London life during one of her two solo acoustic surprise songs: a piano medley that opened with the London-set "The Black Dog" and segued into "Come Back, Be Here" and then "Maroon."
In addition to this weekend's shows, Swift will return to Wembley for five more in August to close the tour's European leg.
London is the only city on the tour where Swift is stopping twice. Some worry the arrangement may represent a swan song of sorts, while others think it just reflects a new era in Swift's bond with the Big Smoke. Whether "So Long, London" turns out to be a final chapter or a bookend to her valentine to the city, the song "London Boy," Eras is arriving as an emotional milestone.
"Her relationship now kind of assumes London won't be somewhere she will be. It's not like there is an American football player living here," said Maggie Fekete, 22, a Canadian graduate student who credits the London references in Swift's music with orienting her when she moved to the city three years ago. "I think there will be a lot less London in her music, which is sad."
Stella Elgood, 25, of London, said Friday she assumed Swift would sing "So Long, London" at some point during her eight nights in the city but that Swift "will always be welcome."
"Especially since she dated Harry Styles, she's been here in the Zeitgeist," Elgood said.
For those who haven't been paying attention, Swift had a series of romances with famous British citizens (including Styles in 2012) that ended last year, when she started dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The speculation surrounding "So Long, London" and a mournful companion song that mentions a London pub, "The Black Dog," stems from the 2023 breakup of Swift and English actor Joe Alwyn, who were together for over six years.
Alwyn is assumed to have inspired "London Boy," a song from her 2019 album "Lover." A special-edition "Lover" CD included what appeared to be a January 2017 diary entry in which Swift talked about being "essentially based in London" but trying to lay low. British tabloids later reported that Swift spent much of the COVID-19 pandemic sheltering with Alwyn in north London.
The Sun newspaper reported in December that the multiple Grammy-winner had bought a large property in the area and was remodeling it to be her base in Europe. After Swift released "The Tortured Poets Department" last month, however, a writer for the British edition of ELLE magazine observed that Londoners had an opening "for an all-American A-lister who can slot into her place in our collective consciousness."
"We had Swift before we lost her to her record-breaking, box office-breaking Eras Tour and now, it would appear that her vacant position has been filled by Zendaya," writer Naomi May playfully posited before listing the various locations the American actor had been spotted with her longtime boyfriend, British actor Tom Holland.
Either way, the capital is putting on quite a show of its own to make sure Swift and her fans feel appreciated. Guides are offering walking, bus and taxi tours that retrace her footsteps, including a kebab shop whose owner says his establishment is supplying sandwiches for the singer and her crew on Friday.
Before the end of August, Swifties can partake in a full diet of Swift-themed brunches and dance parties, or ride the London Eye Ferris wheel accompanied by a string quartet playing her music. Souvenir stalls in Camden Market, one of the places mentioned in "London Boy," stocked up on Swift-specific caps, T-shirts, bags and stickers in preparation.
Zachary Hourihane, who co-hosts a Swift podcast called "Evolution of a Snake" and posts YouTube and TikTok videos under the name Swiftologist, said Thursday that it's too soon to know whether the singer will retain her honorary citizenship or part ways with London. As her fans know all too well, only time will tell with Taylor.
"Taylor is someone who retraces her steps a lot. Things are never really over with her. She likes to revisit things that have finished," he said. "Let's be realistic about it. Her relationship, even if it is, 'so long, goodbye,' she has good reason to be in London and good money to make there."
What will Japan's Emperor Naruhito get up to on his previously-delayed UK state visit?
- Tuesday 25 June 2024 at 3:13pm
Royal Editor
The state visit by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan is finally underway after suffering a previous postponement, a possible cancellation following the King’s cancer diagnosis, and then a last-minute scaling back as a result of the UK’s snap General Election.
But it may not feel very scaled back when you see the carriages and horses process back to Buckingham Palace, and then on to the State Banquet tonight where both King Charles and his guest, the Emperor, will make speeches.
The Mall is lined with the recognisable flag of the rising sun and the formal welcome, as they always are, will take place in a ceremony at Horse Guards Parade.
The Japanese Emperor has already been in the UK for several days, undertaking private visits with his wife, having arrived at Stansted Airport on Saturday.
That included a visit to the world-famous Thames barrier as Emperor Naruhito is a big fan of the River Thames and has studied it closely when he was younger.
Both the Emperor and Empress studied at Oxford University, so a visit to their former college is also part of their programme of events. It will take place on Friday.
Today, however, marks the official start as Prince William meets the couple at their hotel and escorts them to the ceremonial and military welcome parade with King Charles and Queen Camilla.
Following a royal salute from the Guard of Honour, formed of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, the Japanese national anthem will be played by the Band of the Welsh Guards.
The two royal couples will then head back to the palace in a carriage procession for the tried and tested state-visit ritual of lunch followed by an inspection of items from the Royal Collection, which relate to Japan.
The Emperor and Empress also have a visit at Westminster Abbey to squeeze in, where the Japanese head of state will lay a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.
The events of the day mean the election campaign will be put on pause by some of the political party leaders who have been invited to tonight’s State Banquet.
The Emperor has also requested a visit to the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II.
The late Queen was laid to rest at St George’s Chapel in Windsor following her death in September 2022 and Emperor Naruhito wishes to lay his own wreath there.
State visits are more than just about ceremony.
Both incoming visits, like this one, and foreign state visits when the King and Queen travel abroad are carried out on the advice of the Foreign Office with government priorities in mind.
Diplomats were keen to keep as much of this visit intact, despite the election, in order to avoid offending their Japanese guests.
Whilst the visit is a little pared back as a result, the Foreign Office is hopeful it will still enable the usual round of trade announcements to be made and business ties between the two countries to be strengthened.
