Madurai tourism.

Madurai, the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities of India. Ruled by Pandya kings for the longest time in its history, it is called as the 'Lotus City' as it was planned and built in the shape of a lotus. Madurai is known for Meenakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi with a sanctum for her consort, Sundareshwarar.

There are many other ancient temples in Madurai, including Thiruparankundram. 19 thoughts on “2 day madurai itinerary – 17 best places to visit in madurai”.

Best time to visit Madurai? I heard a lot about Madurai and know it because of the Meenakshi temple. I am willing to explore Madurai.

Madurai is so beautiful. I heard about Meenakshi temple but here it is a lot more to visit. Winter must be the best time to visit? Madurai has all religions holy places, everyone heart met at the place. Temples sculptures and architecture are so breathtaking.

Since childhood, I am mystified by the idea of visiting and exploring Madurai after seeing a DD National TV show. Thanks for enlisting the places to visit in Madurai.

Temple, church , dargah all three you have covered & that’s so nice. Also that waterfall is beautiful. The itinerary will be very helpful for travellers to explore it in 2 day time.

I didn’t know that there is so much to explore in Madurai. I only knew about Meenakshi temple but looks like this place has a lot more.

Meenakshi Mandir has been on my bucket list for many years now. Somehow I’m yet to receive a calling. However I did not have any idea there are so many other things to do here. Hope to visit Tamil Nadu soon.

To be honest, I only knew that Meenakshi temple is the main place to explore in Madurai. From your post, I have come to know about other places to visit here. What will be the best time, October or February?

I visited Madurai recently. And I visited only the main Meenakshi Temple. I didn’t realise Madurai had so many things to do. Will save this for next time.

Also, love the way you have covered a range of things to do. From temples to waterfalls, Madurai seems to have everything. Thanks for all the recommendations.

Madurai is so rich in heritage! Earlier I knew only about Meenakshi temple. But now reading this guide, I have decided to allot two whole days to Madurai on our next trip.

Madurai has a lot of tourist places which also include religious places. One day isn’t enough to explore around. Thank you for the detailed itinerary.

Are you someone who loves those hairpin curves? Go on an 18-hairpin drive to explore the calm and silence of lush green forests at Sirumalai. The place with its dense forest along with its mythological relevance is a weekend getaway for the people in Dindigul and Madurai.

Situated at an altitude of 1,600 metres above sea level, the Sirumalai mountain ranges offer a spectacular view to visitors, with their greenery and breathtaking viewpoints.  There is an observation tower at the 17th hairpin bend, and visitors stop over here to enjoy the scenery below. Pilgrims come here to visit Annai Velankanni Church and Vellimalai Murugan Temple. The ecologically vulnerable place is spread across 60,000 acres of land, and is a treasure house of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. The hill ranges have a tropical mix of dry deciduous forests and semi-evergreen forests.

A banana variety known as Sirumalai Hill Banana is cultivated on the hilltop and is used in making panchamritam, (prasadam or consecrated food) at the Muruga temple in Palani.

An artificially created lake known as Sirumalai Lake was built in 2010, where there are boating facilities. The hill has a mythological significance too.  It is known  as Sanjeevani Hills, believed to have been carried by Lord Hanuman to cure Laxman.  It  is considered to be part of the Sirumalai Hills. You can get a panoramic view of Dindigul and Chinnamalai towns from the Selvi Koil point in the mountain range. The tallest hill in Sirumalai is the Silver Hill, believed to be made of silver. It is said that sage Agastya Siddhar turned the hill into a stone in Kali Yuga. A 500-year-old Sivalinga can be found on top of the hill. Khandige Estate in Sirumalai protects the biodiversity of the Western Ghats, and is surrounded by reserve forest that covers an area of 20,000 – 30,000 acres. During the rainy season (in October and December), the area receives an average rainfall of 120-132 cm.

The place is 90 kilometres from Madurai and 125 kilometres from Trichy.

Since it is a blanket forest area, travellers are advised to buy food from Dindigul town which is 25 kilometres away.
