Full Review

Patagonia is one of those brands whose gear we generally tend to find quite capable. They’re not perfect by any means (what brand is, anyway?), but their outdoorsy designs are typically safe bets if you want a good all-rounder bag. Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite feel the same with the Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Handle

It has the simplicity of an everyday backpack, from its minimal organization to its shoulder strap-only harness system. However, its soft structure and accessibility woes greatly impact performance. Still, its 30-liter size can excel for light travel purposes, so it’s still worth checking out—and that’s exactly what we’re doing in this review.

Materials & Aesthetic

The Arbor Roll Top has a squarish profile to go with its rolltop design, though the main fabric’s soft structure rounds its outline quite a bit, so it’s not boxy by any means. Spoiler: this softness plays a huge role in how this bag performs overall. Style-wise, though, it’s not really the shape of the structure that drives the Arbor Roll Top’s appeal. Patagonia cleverly split the two halves to create a two-tone design. The Abalone Blue colorway, which we have here, doesn’t do this much justice, but the other options do.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Brand

At the time of writing, there are only two colorways available: the jazzy-looking Paintbrush Red version and the even jazzier-looking Hut to Hut Multi: New Navy version. The latter option can be polarizing with all of its squiggly lines, but hey, to each their own, right? At the very least, looks don’t affect how well a bag performs. Plus, the Arbor Roll Top is packing quality materials, as expected from the brand.

The main fabric is 100% recycled polyester—good news for environmentally conscious buyers. Polyester is typically a lot softer than nylon, but good polyester like this still endures the wear and tear of day-to-day use. We’ve yet to spot any noteworthy damage on our sample, like tears or loose threads. The fabric is also coated with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish that adds a layer of protection against splashes. Mind you, DWR coatings don’t make a bag waterproof, just more water-resistant.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Buckle

The Arbor Roll Top’s hardware also proves reliable. The buckles and zippers are Duraflex and YKK-branded, respectively, and both are well-regarded names. Different rolltop bags come with different means to lock down their rolls. As for the Arbor Roll Top, it has a single buckle on a rather thin-looking strap. Fortunately, this singular buckle works well, and so too do the YKK zippers of the front pocket and laptop compartment.

External Components

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Side By Side

The Arbor Roll Top sits at a rated capacity of 30 liters—relatively big for an everyday carry bag and adequate for light travel. The accompanying harness system seems almost too simple, though. There’s a pair of shoulder straps, a top nylon handle, and that’s pretty much it. There are no load lifters, hip belts, or even a sternum strap to assist. Additionally, we also notice the lack of strap keepers, which we’ve seen in previous Arbor bags, so we’re sad to see them not make it here as well.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Strap

The shoulder straps by themselves handle our everyday load comfortably. We don’t always have the bag fully packed to the brim, just a few packing cubes , a laptop, a water bottle, and a bunch of accessories. With this kind of heft, the contoured shoulder straps distribute the weight evenly, cushioned by a layer of thick padding.

The bag’s soft structure is somewhat mitigated by the back panel’s non-meshed foam padding. In terms of comfort, this means that our back isn’t up against the hard surface of our laptop. That said, this doesn’t help all that much since the soft polyester’s bagginess wins over the padding’s rigidity, compromising the way the bag carries. Items in the main compartment sag and push towards the bottom while simultaneously pushing our laptop upwards. This also curves the upper portion of the back panel awkwardly, making the overall experience less than stellar.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Studio Back

We’re also not super stoked about the Arbor Roll Top’s water bottle pockets. These pockets lack any elasticity to help them grip bottles firmly. We’ve seen other backpacks, even from Patagonia, come with better-designed water bottle pockets. Some are gusseted, elasticated, zippered, or even magnetized. To be fair, they do go deep enough that slender bottles like our 18-ounce Hydro Flask sit pretty securely—that is, until the bag is tipped over and the smooth-surfaced bottle slides out. On the other hand, our 32-ounce Nalgene Wide Mouth Tritan bottle fares better since its bigger size sits more flush against the fabric.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Floor 2

Lastly, there’s also a small nylon loop at the front of the bag near the bottom. This is handy for hanging accessories like a bike light or reflector. Keep in mind, though, that low-hanging accessories can make the bag feel droopy noticeably if they’re heavy enough. You can also hang some on the shoulder straps, which each have a loop, so you have visibility both at the front and back.

Inside The Pack

The Arbor Roll Top’s front pocket matches the bag’s total size and capacity; that is to say that the front pocket is very spacious. Before we get into how much space there is, we first have to note how subtly hidden the pocket’s opening is. It’s shrouded by a gusset that marks the border between the two shades of the bag’s fabric. If not for the small cord pull of the zipper peeking out, it’s relatively easy to miss it—hooray for security!

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Pocket Keys

To put just how roomy the front pocket is into perspective, we’re able to fit a slim but still big Aer Slim Pouch inside. This is in addition to our wallet, smartphone, and a few other everyday carry items like our keys (attached to the built-in key clip) and Zippo. There’s still room to spare, mostly in the upper portion where there’s a lot of headroom, though small accessories can be hard to find in there. We would have liked to see smaller pockets or dividers for better organization with this much space available. As it stands, it’s easy for items to get all mixed up and hide away in deep corners.

Moving onto the Arbor Roll Top’s defining feature, the way Patagonia implements the rolltop closure design is pretty standard. As a quick refresher, rolltop bags have excess fabric that forms the main compartment’s opening. This is rolled neatly and further cinched down through other means like a clip, buckle, cinch cord, or otherwise. The rim of the opening is reinforced with a rigid material to aid with rolling and unrolling.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Empty Interior

Some rolltop bags use a combination of buckles and other fasteners, but the Arbor Roll Top only uses a strap with a buckle. The issue with this strap is that the roll is still noticeably loose even when it’s fully tightened down. Not to mention that the extra slack flaps around freely due to the lack of a strap keeper or a place to stow it.

We find the opening itself to be narrow relative to how deep the bag is. Remember, this is a 30-liter backpack, so it has a lot of depth to it. Rolltops aren’t the quickest when it comes to main compartment accessibility, and this narrow opening compounds it. Everyday carry isn’t this bag’s strong suit, especially if main compartment access is a top priority. On the flip side, the roominess and the fact that it carries most optimally when fully packed out make it more ideal for light travel.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Interior

Inside, we’re able to fit three packing cubes side by side along with our laptop and smaller, less frequently used accessories. We put these accessories inside the small zippered pocket just above the built-in laptop sleeve. It has just enough space to fit our pack of gum but isn’t big enough to hold our iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Going back to that laptop sleeve we just mentioned, you don’t have to fret that it’s inside the main compartment. It has its own dedicated opening found at the side of the back panel; no need to go through the rolltop each time you need to take your laptop out. Good thing, too, since the zippered pocket above it needs to be flipped out of the way each time if you’re taking it out via the main compartment. The sleeve features some padding, both at the back and at the front side, so you won’t have to rely on clothes to absorb minor impacts.

Patagonia Arbor Roll Top Pack 30L Laptop

Some bags are just hit or miss, and unfortunately, the Arbor Roll Top misses a lot more than it hits. Its soft structuredness stands out to us as its main weakness, causing issues in carrying comfort. We still think it’s a capable rolltop backpack for light travel, and its 30-liter capacity comes in handy. As an everyday backpack, though, something smaller will perform better.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Squared-off shape should be packing cube-friendly
  • The main compartment is quite deep, though most rolltops are
  • The laptop compartment is separate, so we don’t have to roll and unroll each time we need our laptop
  • Bag doesn’t offer much organization—packing cubes and pouches are a must
  • Bottom of the pack can sag below the laptop, causing uncomfortable carry
  • Pack is hard to access, and the rolltop has a hard time staying down with the adjustment strap
  • Water bottle pockets are deep but don’t offer any elasticity to keep bottles locked into place

Patagonia Refugio 30L Daypack Review

Hello? Waiter? Yes, I’ll have the word salad please. Which one you ask? Why, the “7.3-oz 400-denier 100% postconsumer recycled polyester with a PU coating and a PFC-free DWR finish (durable water repellent coating that does not contain perfluorinated chemicals)” of course.

What’s that? I’m just saying what the Refugio Daypack is made of? And it’s just a long-winded way of saying “recycled, waterproof polyester?” Well. I’ll just have a breadstick and a crouton then.

Patagonia might be the most ethics-obsessed outdoor company in the world. Actually, scratch that. They might be the most ethics-obsessed company, full stop, on this mortal coil. Every square centimeter of the Patagonia Refugio Daypack is a testament to their commitment to fair trade and recyclable manufacturing. This is undeniable, since it says so on every tag, product description , and on the rabbit hole that is their activism page. Although sadly, as far as I know, their “self-imposed 1% Earth Tax” hasn’t caught on at Google, Tesla, or Amazon yet.

Does the price of that activism get passed on to the consumer? Almost undoubtedly, yes. Are most consumers happy to pay extra to know that they’re supporting a company that at least makes some effort to save the mother nature? Probably so; who’s to say. And how much, it’s impossible to say, but clocking in at $120 on Patagonia’s website, I find the Refugio to be a decently affordable pack for its size and versatility. But is it ultimately worth it?

You’ll just have to climb up a mountain in jorts to find out.

Circumstances of Review

I’ve been carrying the Patagonia Refugio everywhere with me for three months now. Seriously, I ride my bike to work every day with it, and it has also been a faithful companion in the back seat of the engine for every roll of the year. So far it has been all over Eastern Washington and Oregon, as well as Arizona, Texas, and Nevada.

patagonia 30l travel

The stretchy elastic pockets can hold a LOT of coffee, and the top pocket holds as many electrolyte packets as your heart could ever desire.

I’ve also carried it on a number of day hikes and on a couple of overnight trips in Umatilla and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests—just to make sure that it’s truly up to snuff in terms of carrying capacity, longevity, and water resistance.

The Refugio Daypack comes in both a 26L option and a 30L option. The 26L is cheaper by $20, but it has a full-pack zipper up the back, which I’m not a huge fan of. Nor does it have shock cord on the outside like the 30L. With those added securities, I think the 30L is much more suited to actual outdoor activities and serves equally well as a commuter or day pack.

There are also lots of dope colors. Patagonia’s design team was on point with this one, as per usual. I wish I’d gone with something more adventurous than black-on-black, but I’ll just live vicariously through y’all.

The Refugio is built with a fixed 19″ torso length, which they have deemed the “Refugio Fit.” I do find the fit to be fairly universal, as I’m of extremely average build, and there’s plenty of room to adjust up or down. The one sternum strap fits my torso well, as do the shoulder straps. I think the shoulder straps and the ventilated back pads are also well-padded without feeling either excessive or austere.

patagonia refugio

Although I do wish there was a stashable or removable hip belt, as the sternum strap alone doesn’t prevent bounciness if you’re doing a long trail run.

Packability

I think this is the point that makes or breaks the Patagonia Refugio. It’s advertised as a commuter pack that helps “ease transitions from work to play,” and so it needs to really accommodate space for any of your outdoor gear as well as your laptop and other gadgets. Maybe an iPad or something. I don’t know; I’m a dinosaur who already missed that boat. Regardless, I find the removable laptop sleeve to be imperative, and I think it’s a keystone feature for this thing. I loved having it with me for those 14-day stays in hotels.

On the other hand, for the kinda fast-packing/kinda backpacking trips I took, I kept the sleeve out and had more than enough room to fit all of the essentials. So I think it lives up to its versatile hype.

patagonia 30l travel

The folks at Atom Packs and Enlightened Equipment are probably cringing at how poorly staged this flat lay is.

Even with everything packed into the Refugio, there was leftover space in every compartment for other essentials and food. I didn’t even need to bring the fanny pack.

Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L Features

I’m going to break up the “features” category into two parts because let’s be honest: if you’re considering buying this pack, it’s not because it has the most features, it’s more for the brand recognition and quality of the materials used. You’d be hard-pressed to find a corporation with more sustainable practices than Patagonia (although small, cottage companies are perhaps more sustainable (but that’s a different type of business model/argument (but are all corporations inherently unsustainable? (I’m not sure, my high school economics class didn’t teach me that)))).

Technical Features:

  • Padded 15″ Laptop Sleeve
  • Breathable Back Panel And Hydration Hanger
  • Bike Light Clip
  • Dedicated Desk Caddy compartment
  • External Shock Cord
  • 19″ torso length fits most adults (the “Refugio Fit”)

Ethical Features:

  • Pack Made of 100% Recycled Polyester With PFC-Free DWR Finish
  • Fair Trade Certified™ sewn
  • 100% Recycled Nylon

patagonia refugio

Putting that “PFC-Free DWR” to the ultimate test.

Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L Pros

Versatility

This pack holds up under a good variety of circumstances, so it’s a great option to always have in your backseat or on your back itself. There’s a lot to be said for a single backpack that serves you well at work, at the gym, on a bike, or on a mountain.

I’m not the hugest nerd for the D, but it is my understanding that 400-denier polyester is a pretty tough material. And after three months of continuous usage, I can say that this pack is showing absolutely ZERO signs of wear in any spot. All that with 100% recycled materials is a pretty good deal for every party involved.

For the Love of All That is Holy Ergonomic Water Bottle Pockets

How much I love easily accessible, flexible water bottle holders. Seriously, it’s such a small joy to not have to take off a pack, or strain and flail with wanton abandon, to reach and put back those things. The Refugio pockets are made with 100% recycled nylon, are very easily accessible, and also show no signs of wear–despite repeatedly heavy usage.

Water Resistant

Although this may seem like an industry standard at this point, I’d say that in the arena of day packs, water resistance is still not as common as it is in the long-distance backpacking community. That said, the Refugio is a notable exception and has performed well in the rain every single time it’s been called upon (which is pretty often in Washington). That said, I’m not sure I’d pack my laptop for an extended walk in a thunderstorm, but all my maps stayed dry despite six or seven hours of fairly constant drizzle/rain.

patagonia 30l travel

An almost-daily testing of how water resistant this pack really is.

Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L Cons

If you put too much weight in the top accessories pocket, then you can count on the pack flopping open every time you open either of the other two main compartments. And if you left that top accessories pocket unzipped while you were getting into those two main compartments, well, you can count on all your silly things like toiletries, sunglasses, headphones, sunscreen, and Pokemon cards to go spilling out everywhere. Definitely not speaking from experience.

No Hip Belt

I’m a simple man, and all I’m asking for is a simple hip belt. Nothing fancy. It doesn’t need padding or pockets or anything, just a little bit of extra weight distribution when it’s being worn on the trail. I understand the lack of need for one in most circumstances that this pack was designed for, and perhaps the maximum load it was designed to carry doesn’t necessitate a hip belt, but I still think that it would keep the pack locked into your body for more strenuous exercise. It would be an easy add-on, at any rate, and that seems like an oversight. A little stashable pocket for them would be the perfect feature.

Weighing 1lb 12oz. (28oz.) the Refugio clocks in right around the middle of the daypack herd in terms of weight-to-carrying capacity ratio. It’s not that heavy, but it’s not as light as some of the higher-end options that are dedicated trail packs like a Pa’lante Joey or Gossamer Gear Vagabond.

patagonia 30l travel

Didn’t get to test how flame-resistant the pack is, so this review is technically incomplete until then.

It’s worth noting that I went into this review wanting to be underwhelmed with the Refugio. There’s a certain collective aversion to Patagonia in the backpacking community, you know—this subtle elitism that probably stems from the fact that Patagonia has essentially rebranded itself as a lifestyle brand as much as an outdoor company. Patagucci is a portmanteau I’ve heard thrown around once or twice.

That being said, the Refugio is an undeniably great daypack. The materials are top-quality, the comfort is notable, the versatility is intoxicating, and overall my few complaints are ultimately frivolous.

In terms of price point, it’s pretty much impossible for me, or anyone really, to put a price on morality. All of the sustainability and ethics that Patagonia puts into the manufacturing of their products sort of shields them from the criticism of being overpriced. Although, at $120, I don’t think the Refugio will break the bank. Especially for all the uses you can get out of it. It’s good to know you can count on the Refugio in so many different situations because, as Jim Gaffigan once said, you never know when a hike might break out .

Picture this: Your coworker invites you out for a scenic hike, but all you bring to the office is your briefcase , which can hardly fit a rain shell, let alone a Nalgene or hiking shoes. This is where the Patagonia Refugio 30L Daypack comes into play.

Both a laptop backpack and hiking daypack, this bag combines the functionality of a typical work bag with the aesthetics and textiles of an outdoor one. Folks who operate in more casual office settings will love this ultra-versatile backpack.

Unlike most outdoor daypacks, the Patagonia Refugio comes with an included laptop sleeve/desk caddy for on-the-go professionals or students. It also looks like a hiking bag but can adapt well to educational environments or more laid-back office settings, even with its multiple colorways of bright earth tones.

When you want to transition from the office to the trail, simply swap the laptop sleeve for a hydration bladder, and you’re ready for whatever multi-mile trek you’re adventuring out on. The exterior bungees are great for clipping on extra gear or cinching down your rain jacket for easy access on the go. When the weather gets gnarly, the Refugio has a durable water-repellent finish that keeps the water from encroaching on your gear inside.

From trips to the gym and laps up and down the skin track, I tested the Refugio in a variety of settings, and it adapted well to each one. This backpack has all the bells and whistles without sacrificing style or space.

In short: The Patagonia Refugio 30L Daypack is the jack-of-all-trades for combining a laptop backpack’s functionality with a hiking pack’s usefulness. At 30L, users can fit all their daily necessities, such as notebooks, a computer, climbing shoes, snacks, and more. This streamlined design has a removable padded 15-inch laptop sleeve, perfect for easy transitions from the office to the trail. At $129, this casual, outdoorsy backpack is ideal for users who want to combine work and play.

A Versatile Companion

If you reside in a dorm room or a small studio apartment in a mountain town, making space for multiple backpacks in your living situation can be hard. This is also true when you don’t want to break the bank by spending hundreds of dollars on those packs when you could just get two for the price of one. This is where the Patagonia Refugio 30L comes in handy.

A true multitasker, the Refugio lends itself to any environment thanks to its durability, storage space, and customizable elements. When you’re packing up for work or school in the morning, simply use the desk caddy to store your 15-inch laptop or tablet, pens, notes, chargers, and other small accessories.

This sleeve easily slides in and out of the pack’s back panel, keeping all your little items well-organized and protected in its multiple mesh pockets. Gone are the days of digging around your pack trying to find that pesky USB-C cable when it can easily sit in a see-through pocket next to your other gizmos and gadgets.

patagonia 30l travel

Once work is over, it’s time to play. Whether you’re heading to the resort or hitting single track, the Refugio can transform into the perfect outdoor pack. Simply remove the desk caddy, swap it for a hydration bladder thanks to the pass-through access, and then get movin’ and groovin’. Because of how breathable and comfortable the straps on this pack were, I used it to skin the resort and take my pup out for day hikes.

patagonia 30l travel

Even if you don’t use the Refugio for more recreational activities, this laptop backpack would be ideal for longer commutes via foot or bicycle to class or work since it is so moisture-wicking and breathable when on. There’s even a bike light clip at the base of the cap so you can cycle safely home after the sun goes down.

The versatility of this pack is probably my favorite feature — I love being able to transition easily from my workplace to the trailhead without needing to swap backpacks or repack all of my stuff. I’m more excited because I know my laptop is safely stored instead of just sitting around loose.

patagonia 30l travel

Exterior Elements

In terms of appearance, the Patagonia Refugio certainly looks more like a hiking pack than a professional laptop backpack. It is best suited for a more laid-back work environment, such as a casual office, retail setting, or college classroom.

If your office has a strict dress code, you may want to pass on this laptop backpack since it has an outdoor aesthetic thanks to the polyester outer, bungee cords, and less structural design.

In terms of materials, the Refugio is designed with 100% polyester fabrics that have durable water repellent (DWR). This backpack is water-repellant during light rain but cannot withstand a downpour, so folks in wetter climates should err on the side of caution.

However, I did find that it held up quite durably during its months of use, even after scraping against tree branches and boulders during my multiple excursions. The exterior bungees tend to get snagged on sticks and such, so exercise some caution when walking through more dense areas.

For folks wanting plenty of color options, the Refugio is a good fit as it is available in five options ranging from black and brown to some different blue and green tones. If you aren’t amped on the 30L look, check out the 26L version , which loses the bungees and has over six festive color options. Either way, you get the included desk caddy sleeve to store your computer safely.

patagonia 30l travel

Capacity and Organization

Speaking of computer storage, let’s chat about the internal space on this puppy. The backpack can hold 30 L and fit a laptop, chargers, layers, a few books, headphones, and much more. This capacity makes it great for quick domestic trips as it is carry-on compliant or when you must pack all your notebooks for class.

There are two main compartments — one for where the desk caddy sleeve can easily slide in, and a larger open compartment directly in front of that. The open spaces are conducive to luggage cubes and other modular packing systems .

However, this backpack lacks pockets, with only one exterior zippered pocket and side pockets for water bottles or an umbrella. While the desk caddy has one zippered pocket and two non-zippered pockets, I wish there was a bit more inner organization on the Refugio itself, like an inner microfiber pocket for small items like cards, keys, and sunglasses.

patagonia 30l travel

The removable desk caddy sleeve is great for storing your laptop — as long as it is 15 inches or smaller — and I appreciated how simple it made getting all of my tech packed up, especially as a graphic designer. I tend to be on the go often, since I work for a newspaper, so the padded case definitely made unpacking and packing effortless. Plus, the sleeve made for the perfect lap desk and kept the heat of my computer off my legs.

You can optimize the Refugio’s storage space using the bungee cords attached to the front of the pack. These were great for clipping extra gear like dog leashes and storing layers like down jackets, making even more room in the inner compartments to store items. Folks who don’t quite need the extra storage space of the Refugio 30L can opt for the 26L version, as it is a bit slimmer but has a larger exterior pocket instead of the shock cords.

Comfort and Support

Known for ultra-soft fleeces, reliable jackets, and breathable shorts, Patagonia has also designed a plethora of backpacks that are equally iconic and comfortable to wear. Specifically with the Refugio 30L, Patagonia used soft, nonabrasive polyester fabric that doesn’t irritate the wearer’s skin.

The straps and back panel are highly breathable with ventilated mesh that quickly wicks away moisture. Even after skinning for multiple miles on a warmer winter day, my torso stayed cool despite the sweat I was working up.

patagonia 30l travel

The harness system on the Refugio is pretty classic for a daypack . The straps are easily adjustable when the pack is on and have simple mechanisms for tightening and loosening. If you feel like you need a little extra support, simply buckle the sternum strap across your chest.

When using this pack while recreating, I did wish there was a hip buckle for more stability. However, the sternum strap supported my upper body well for daily commutes to the office and coffee shop.

I appreciated the comfort of this daypack, which is less structured than most laptop backpacks. You can also easily store it away when not in use. Due to its flexibility, this pack can be rolled up and put in a trunk, cubby, or shelf. Even though the material is super soft, I found that it held up just fine during my multiple months of testing with no signs of wear or tear.

patagonia 30l travel

Laptop Protection

The Refugio impressed me ultimately with its ability to protect a tablet or laptop. The pack has thick padding at its bottom, absorbing any shock if dropped. The back panel also has padded lining, which, in conjunction with the cushioned laptop sleeve, really adds to this backpack’s overall ability to keep your computer safe in the event of a tumble.

patagonia 30l travel

As I mentioned before, the Refugio is made with moisture-repellent polyester with a DWR finish. This is great for wicking away sweat and protecting your valuables during a light rain; however, I wouldn’t wear this backpack in heavy showers or storms.

I tested this pack’s water resistance by placing it under a running sink. The water beaded off seamlessly without any staining or evident seeping. However, the bottom of the pack did not boast the same water-repellant abilities, and the water stained the area. Upon reaching my hand in, I also felt some moisture in the bottom of the pack.

Overall, the Refugio’s laptop protection factor is palpable, as it has thick padding, a cushioned computer sleeve, and some water resistance. In the event of an undesirable drop or coffee spill, your gear should be just fine as long as you quickly respond. Just keep in mind that it is not waterproof or completely invincible to bigger impacts.

Patagonia Refugio Daypack 30L: Conclusion

patagonia 30l travel

Overall, I found the Refugio 30L from good ole Patagucci , as the kids call it, to be pretty impressive for a hiking/office hybrid backpack. I think this backpack would be ideal for a student at an outdoorsy school, as it has a strong support system and plenty of storage space for tech, books, and binders.

Once you’re out of class, it performs even better on the trail thanks to its breathable textiles and ability to store maximum hydration. Seriously, the bottle pockets are huge — I could even fit my cumbersome tripod in one of them.

Folks who are looking for a laptop backpack for a large office or need a surplus of organization elements may want to pass on the Refugio, as it has a casual style and only one exterior zippered pocket. The efficiently organized desk caddy is highly useful and can be combined with a minimalistic briefcase or backpack.

My only real issues with this backpack were its lack of a waist strap and questionable water repellency, especially at the base of the pack. Even a small, detachable hip buckle would be the cherry on top for this hiking backpack. If it were raining or snowing heavily, I would opt to swap this backpack out for something more waterproof, especially if my invaluable laptop is in there.

At $129, I think the Refugio is a steal of a deal, since you basically get two backpacks for the price of one. From long travel days through airports to biking commutes to the office, this backpack was a top performer for me.

It’s comfortable, supportive, and highly versatile thanks to the customizable elements and storage options. Whether you’re a student, photographer, outdoorsy professional, or even just a passionate hiker, I highly recommend the Patagonia Refugio 30L .

What do you think about this product?

March 18, 2023

Awesome, Functional Adventure Pack

I bought this bag to be my everyday pack, with the bonus of having the features of a fly fishing pack for longer days on the river. It has been excellent for both, and then some. The padding on the back is incredibly comfortable when worn all day, and that paired with the adjustable shoulder, chest and hip straps have made it easy to adjust it to the growing list of activities I throw at it. When it comes to fishing, this bag has plenty of tool and accessory compatibility on the shoulder and chest straps, with the little magnet on the right shoulder strap being an excellent spot to place your flies or tools for a minute when changing out your rig on the water. The outer pocket can be accessed horizontally if you rotate the bag around on your right shoulder, much like a sling pack. If you paired this with the Stealth Work Station or Convertible Vest, you could practically live on the river. This bag's construction is incredibly sturdy. I was worried about there not being any liner on the inside of the bag, especially on the bottom. However, after months of bike commuting on wet streets, scarping past willows and sliding down river banks on the weekends, and even taking some tumbles while using it as a snowboard bag, there is hardly a scratch on the ripstop exterior. In the end, I think the lack of extra liners and padding has kept the bulk down making this pack super light. Cant recommend this bag enough, it is absolutely going to become my go to daypack for hikes this spring and summer.

9 Best Carry-on Backpacks, Tested and Reviewed

No checked bag, no problem.

When it comes to packing for a trip, the struggle is real. We’ve all been there—trying to cram an entire wardrobe into a carry-on, only to find ourselves sitting on the suitcase, praying the zipper doesn’t explode. That’s where the hero of travel accessories steps in: the carry-on backpack. It’s like the Mary Poppins bag of the modern traveler—spacious yet sleek, and somehow defies the laws of physics by fitting everything you need without making you look like you’re off on a six-month expedition.

Whether you’re a last-minute packer who shoves everything in ten minutes before departure or a meticulous planner with a packing list for every occasion, the right carry-on backpack can change your travel game. Imagine breezing through the airport, bypassing the baggage claim chaos, and knowing your essentials are all within reach. Plus, with the right one, you can finally ditch the dreaded rolling suitcase (although we have a guide for the best rolling carry-ons ) that always seems to find every uneven tile on the floor. And if you’re on the hunt for personal item bags , there’s a guide for that too.

We’ve tested and reviewed a range of carry-on backpacks to find the best of the best—those that not only look good but perform under pressure. So, if you’re ready to level up your travel experience, let’s dive into the top picks that will have you feeling organized, stylish, and, most importantly, stress-free.

Carl Friedrik 72-hour Backpack

72-hour Backpack

Traveling light and organized can feel like chasing a unicorn. But with the Carl Friedrik 72 Hour Backpack, we’re pretty sure we’ve caught one. This bag is half backpack, half suitcase, and 100% awesome for up to 72 hours of hands-free travel. Designed with a sleek, resilient nylon exterior, it not only looks great but is built to handle whatever the weather throws your way. And trust us, packing has never been easier—just unzip the front panel, and voilà, your own mini suitcase ready to be filled.

What we love most is how this backpack combines style and function. It’s got a separate business compartment for your 16” laptop and documents, plus three interior pockets to keep everything in its place. The integrated luggage holder is a game-changer when you need to breeze through the airport with your hands full. And despite its minimalist look, it’s packing eight pockets and compartments—because who doesn’t love a little extra organization?

Monos Metro Backpack

Metro Backpack

Meet the Monos Metro Backpack, your new go-to sidekick for everything from the daily grind to spontaneous weekend getaways. With its sleek design and water-resistant, ultra-microfibre vegan leather, this backpack is as stylish as it is functional. Whether you’re navigating the urban jungle or catching a flight, the Metro Backpack has you covered with its QuickSnap™ Modular Kit System, making it easy to swap out compartments to suit your needs. Plus, it’s got a nifty trolley sleeve that slides over your suitcase handle, so you can glide through the airport like a pro—no juggling act required.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Black Hole MLC 45L

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L is like the Swiss Army knife of travel bags—it’s ready for anything, whether you're trekking through the mountains or just trying to survive the airport. This bag combines the durability of a rugged duffel with the convenience of a carry-on, all while keeping things eco-friendly with 100% recycled materials. Need to switch up how you carry it? No problem. The Black Hole MLC transforms from a backpack to a shoulder bag or a duffel faster than you can say “boarding pass.”

With 45 liters of space, it’s roomy enough for world travel, yet compact enough to meet most airline carry-on requirements. And if you’re the type who likes to pack tech gear, the padded laptop pocket has you covered, even zipping open flat for TSA’s convenience. This bag might be tough as nails, but it’s got a soft spot for the environment—and your back.

Peak Design Travel Pack

Travel Pack

If you’re the type who travels with more gadgets than a tech store, the Peak Design Travel Pack is your perfect match. This backpack is a tech lover's dream, loaded with features that make it easy to carry everything from your DSLR to your tablet while still looking sharp. The 30L version is ideal for daily adventures, while the 45L steps up for those longer trips where you need to pack all your gear (and then some). Made with weatherproof materials and a 100% recycled shell, it’s built to handle whatever the journey throws at you, all while being eco-friendly.

What’s especially handy is the expandable design, which lets you adjust the size depending on how much you’re hauling—whether it’s just the essentials or your entire tech arsenal. With theft-deterrent zippers and hidden pockets, your gear stays safe no matter where you are, from bustling airports to off-the-grid locations.

One reviewer writes : “I bought the Travel Backpack last month. I was hoping for a great product, but it has exceeded my expectations in many aspects. It is noticeable that a great deal of planning and design was done for this backpack. As a traveler, I have used many travel backpacks in my day, but nothing was even closer to this. The comfort, the ease of use, and the modularity just made me awe. The environmental-friendly processes you use is also a major consideration when I bought this and I am happy to be somewhat of a part of it. Thank you for that. Keep up the good work!"

Bagsmart Blast Quick Access 28L-38L Carry On Travel Backpack

Blast Quick Access 28L-38L Carry On Travel Backpack

Here’s the deal: the Bagsmart Blast Quick Access Travel Backpack is the budget-friendly workhorse we didn’t know we needed. Whether you're packing for a quick weekend or squeezing in a few extra outfits for a longer trip, this bag makes it effortless. The wide-opening main compartment takes the stress out of packing, and that 180-degree laptop compartment? It’s a lifesaver for gliding through security without breaking a sweat.

What really impressed us is how this bag keeps everything organized with six independent pockets, and when we needed a bit more space, it expanded from 28L to 38L like a charm. And after a particularly adventurous trip, discovering it’s machine washable was the cherry on top—no more carrying around travel grime!

TomToc Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack

Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack

If you’re a fan of the classic duffel bag but crave the convenience of a backpack, the TomToc Navigator-T66 is here to deliver the best of both worlds. This bag gives you that easy-access, throw-everything-in vibe of a duffel, with the added comfort of backpack straps to save your shoulders. The front opens wide, duffel-style, so you can lay it flat and pack (or unpack) in a flash—perfect for those of us who like to see everything at a glance.

What really caught our attention is how this bag blends duffel functionality with smart organization. The spacious 40L main compartment is ideal for packing several outfits, whether you’re a packing cube pro or more of a “just toss it in” type. Also, the separate laptop compartment and extra pockets make it easy to keep your tech and essentials within reach. And at a fraction of the price of high-end alternatives, it’s a no-brainer for budget-conscious travelers.

Hartmann Reserve Backpack

Reserve Backpack

Looking for a backpack that doesn’t just carry your stuff but also adds a touch of sophistication to your look? Enter the Hartman Reserve Backpack. This isn’t your average bag—it’s a head-turner crafted from cotton-twill canvas with full-grain aniline leather accents, perfect for anyone who values both form and function. We were impressed by how this bag blends style with practicality. The dedicated padded tech compartment ensures your electronics are safe, while the exterior quick-access pocket is a lifesaver when you’re on the move. And let’s not forget the zip-away beverage pocket—it’s there when you need it, and hidden when you don’t, keeping the sleek design intact.

One reviewer writes: : “It has a lot of storage for being such a slim bag! It is chic and I love the style. The material is thick and durable. Not cheap feeling at all. I have used it for travel and am excited to use it for academics!”

Troubadour Pioneer Backpack

Pioneer Backpack

Let’s face it—staying organized on the go can feel like an Olympic sport. But with the Troubadour Pioneer Backpack, we’re finally winning gold. This bag is the ultimate multitasker, designed to keep everything in its place, whether you’re commuting, hitting the gym, or jetting off for a weekend getaway. Trust us, this backpack has a spot for everything, and we mean everything.

What really stands out is the clever clamshell opening that gives you instant access to your mobile office. There’s a separate, breathable shoe compartment with a waterproof antimicrobial lining (because who wants stinky shoes next to their laptop?), and a shoulder strap pocket that’s perfect for keeping your phone or keys within easy reach. And let’s not forget the retractable bottle holder—hydration has never been this convenient.

Customer Review : “Premium look and feel. Holds its shape whether it is full or empty. Very well padded shoulder straps. Side laptop pocket access is incredibly convenient. Bottom shoe storage allows you to transport clean\dirty laundry and shoes. Love this bag.”

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack

Allpa 42L Travel Pack

If your idea of a good time involves cramming as much adventure into your days as possible, then the Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack is about to become your new best friend. This backpack is like the Swiss Army knife of travel gear—except better because it doesn’t just sit in your pocket. With its suitcase-style, full-wrap zipper opening, packing is as easy as flipping the lid on a treasure chest (and just as exciting).

We love how Cotopaxi has revamped this pack for comfort, with better weight distribution and air mesh shoulder straps that make hauling your gear feel like a breeze. Plus, the new exterior stretch water bottle pocket is a lifesaver when you’re parched mid-adventure. And let’s not forget that it’s made with 100% recycled fabrics, so you can feel good about your eco-friendly choice while you’re off exploring the wild.

What to Look for in a Carry-On Backpack

line break

  • Size and Capacity : The sweet spot for a carry-on backpack is one that’s spacious enough to hold your essentials but compact enough to fit in an overhead bin. Look for a bag that meets airline carry-on size requirements, usually around 45 liters or less. It should have enough room for a weekend’s worth of clothes, toiletries, and gadgets without feeling like you’re lugging around a boulder.
  • Comfort : You’re going to be carrying this thing through airports, train stations, and city streets, so comfort is key. Look for padded shoulder straps, a breathable back panel, and a weight distribution system that doesn’t make your back feel like it’s in a tug-of-war. Bonus points if it has a chest strap or waist belt for extra support on longer treks.
  • Organization : A good carry-on backpack isn’t just a big empty sack; it’s a well-organized travel companion. Look for multiple compartments, zippered pockets, and dedicated spaces for your laptop, chargers, and passport. Easy access to your essentials, like a front pocket for your boarding pass, can make all the difference.
  • Durability : Your backpack will likely see its fair share of rough handling, so it needs to be built to last. Opt for water-resistant materials, strong zippers, and reinforced stitching. If you’re investing in a carry-on, it should withstand being tossed into overhead bins, dragged through security lines, and everything in between.
  • Style : While functionality is crucial, let’s not forget that your carry-on backpack should look good too. Choose a design that matches your personal style, whether that’s sleek and minimalistic or rugged and adventure-ready. After all, this bag is going to be your travel sidekick, so it might as well reflect your vibe.
  • Security : Peace of mind is priceless, especially when traveling. Look for backpacks with anti-theft features like lockable zippers, hidden pockets, and RFID-blocking compartments to keep your valuables safe from prying hands.
  • Versatility : A great carry-on backpack should adapt to your needs, whether you're going on a business trip or a weekend getaway. Consider bags with convertible features, like tuck-away straps or the ability to switch from backpack to briefcase mode, giving you more flexibility on the go.
