To make life simpler, we’ve divided the ideal Spanish gifts into categories, beginning with food.

Glorious Spanish food and cookware, such as olive oil, tapas dishes, cured meats, a paella pan, spices and wine.

We then move onto items that can be worn as clothing or footwear, including garments, accessories and shoes made using leather or rope. There are also some typically Spanish shirts and dresses to buy.

The third category in this Spanish gift guide includes miscellaneous products such as homeware, Spanish ceramics, fans and goods made from olive wood.

To whet your appetite for all things Spanish, the first category concentrates on consumables, plus other items that make ideal gifts for foodies everywhere.

Foodie gifts from Spain

The options here include foods like local extra virgin olive oil, spices, olives, manchego cheese and Iberian ham.

There are also food-related items like traditional tapas dishes, a paella pan or a cookbook – as well as delicious Spanish wine.

bottle of spanish olive oil on a set table

A good quality extra virgin olive oil is a great gift for foodies, who can use it for cooking, making salad dressings and serving with bread, perhaps alongside balsamic vinegar.

The hotter, more southerly parts of Spain – such as Andalusia and the Costa del Sol – are best for finding olive oil of the finest quality. Look out for cold pressed oil, as it is made by traditional methods and with minimal processing.

Though olive oil is often associated with Italy, Spain is actually the biggest producer of extra virgin olive oil. A plethora of local artisans producing these oils assures buyers of a top quality product.

Artisan producers like Castillo de Canena sell first harvest and reserve versions of their olive oils. These will be appreciated by true connoisseurs!

Spain’s olive oil may be fruity or nutty in flavor. As this rich oil may be more flavorsome than its Italian counterparts, it’s often used for dipping, drizzling and making salad dressings so that the full, rounded flavor can really be appreciated.

While it may not look as attractive, it’s best to buy olive oil in a can rather than a bottle if you’re flying home, as it’s more resistant to cabin pressure than glass or even plastic.

You could always decant it into a pretty bottle before gifting it. The attractive bottles that can be found anywhere selling Spanish ceramics are ideal for this purpose.

fresh spanish chorizo

Another product from Spain that’s incredibly popular is chorizo. This paprika-spiced pork sausage is now almost as widely used across the world as Spanish olive oil.

Chorizo is loved for the rich, salty flavor it adds to dishes. Its color also makes food look incredibly appetizing, and any meat eater who loves garlic is likely to adore the flavor too.

This type of Spanish sausage may also be sliced and served as cold cuts, perhaps alongside other products like Iberico ham or Manchego cheese.

You can buy chorizo just about anywhere that sells food, from supermarkets to specialist delis, local markets and more. Yes, you can buy it anywhere, but isn’t there something special about bringing some home from Spain?

iberian ham from spain tapas pinchos

Iberian ham, Iberico ham or Jamon Iberico is one of the best Spanish gifts for those who eat meat. You can buy it in various ways, from a small pack of slices to a whole leg.

The latter stays fresh for far longer. If you can, seek out a front rather than a hind leg: it’s more compact for packing or posting. Outside of local producers, Joselito and Cinco Jota are highly regarded brands.

Do check with your country’s customs regulations before you pack a huge ham into your suitcase. If you cannot carry it, then the store may be able to post it to you or your gift recipient.

For many, Iberico ham is the finest cured pork you’ll find anywhere in the world, so it’s well worth any effort you need to make in getting it home!

saffron in a spoon

Saffron is one the most costly spice there is, so some authentic Spanish saffron will go down a treat with any keen foodie. It’s necessary for making a traditional paella, as well as many other sweet and savory dishes.

Saffron comes from the saffron crocus and the delicate reddish threads obtained from this flowering plant are prized for their glorious color and delicious flavor.

If a gift consisting solely of saffron doesn’t seem enough, you could pair it with other foods or items, such as paprika, a paella pan or a bottle of wine.

spanish manchego cheese portion with a special cutting knife

Spanish cheese makes the perfect accompaniment to cured meats like Iberico ham and chorizo. A great meal could consist of little more than a spread of meats and cheeses, plus a few olives to nibble and some bread to share.

Manchego cheese is the go-to for anyone seeking an authentic flavor of Spain. It hails from the La Mancha region, and is made from sheep’s rather than cow’s milk.

Manchego is matured for anywhere between two months and two years, and can contain small holes caused by pockets of trapped air.

It’s a firm cheese with a buttery flavor, and the name comes from the Manchega breed of sheep whose milk is used to make it.

red hot paprika powder on a wooden spoon

Paprika is far less expensive than saffron, and is also a typical spice used in Spanish cooking. Locally, it’s known as pimentón. It may be sweet, smoky, spicy or all three.

Whichever you pick, this powdered spice is a most appealing shade of rich, brick-like red. It makes a great addition to a range of dishes and is what gives chorizo its characteristic color.

How spicy, sweet or smoky a particular paprika is varies according to the precise blend of peppers used when it’s made. Each variety will thus be a little different from the next.

Paprika is often sold in cute little tins labeled in Spanish, which will also add a dash of flair and authenticity to your giftee’s kitchen. You can buy paprika at food stores or markets found all over Spain.

olives on s local spanish market

Spanish olive oil isn’t the only way to bring a piece of Spain home with you. Olives are a very popular Spanish food indeed, and they make an excellent gift for anyone not living in Spain.

If you buy someone olives as a gift, then you could well be looking after their health at the same time. Like olive oil, olives are rich in nutrients such as healthier fats and vitamin E. They are good for overall health, especially the heart.

In Spain olives are normally harvested by hand and are often fermented for several months to ensure the best possible flavor. You can buy them all over the country.

There are several varieties to look out for, including large gordal olives that are often sold stuffed, mildly flavored Cacereña olives, sharper tasting Hojiblanca olives and Manzanilla olives. The latter are often referred to as Spanish olives.

Manzanilla olives are the best known Spanish variety. These are often grown in Andalusia, before being prepared and fermented in the traditional Sevillian manner.

pieces of turrón spanish christmas dessert

Turrón is a Spanish sweet treat that’s particularly popular around Christmas. It’s a nutty kind of nougat sold all over the country.

This southern European candy is typically made using egg white, honey, sugar and nuts. Often these are toasted almonds. Turrones Vicens is one of the oldest companies, and has been creating the confection since 1775.

Each block of Turrón may be rectangular or round in shape, and it can be sold whole, in slices or cut into bite-sized pieces. You may spot turrón blando or turrón duro when shopping – this refers to soft or hard nougat respectively.

When gift-wrapped, Turrón makes a most aesthetically pleasing gift. It’s also a guaranteed palate pleaser for those who love the sweet things in life.

spanish christmas traditional cookie

Spain’s answer to Scottish shortbread, polvorón is another sweet foodstuff sold across Spain. It’s a soft, crumbly and substantial kind of biscuit or cookie.

Most polvorón is produced in Andalusia, and a typical recipe may contain of flour, milk, sugar, butter and nuts. Each cookie is normally oval in shape, and the plural is polvorónes.

Mantecado – or mantecados – are also Spanish shortbread biscuits. They are small, round and dry, and tend to be made using lard.

Both of these Spanish shortbread cookies are especially popular around Christmas time. They are often consumed in South America as well as Spain.

gourmet chocolate stuffed and dipped dry figs

Another sweet festive treat often seen in Spain is figs slathered in chocolate. These fruit and cocoa confections are sold all over the place during December and make the perfect accompaniment to strong Spanish coffee.

These fruity treats are often made in the region where the fig trees grow, and are often filled with a creamy, chocolate ganache before being coated in the finest chocolate.

spanish tapas and red wine

Spain is one of the biggest ‘Old World’ wine producers in Europe and makes some very fine examples. From a juicy red Rioja to a refreshing, sparkling Cava, there are plenty of reds, whites and roses to pick from.

There are wine regions found throughout the country, including Castilla La Mancha and Galicia in the west, Rioja and Navarra in the north, Catalunya in the east and Andalusia in the south.

Touring Spanish vineyards to find the perfect gift for someone you know makes a great day out, or you can pick up wine in many stores. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a platter of Spanish meats and cheeses.

If you know a Prosecco or Champagne fan, do try introducing them to a good Spanish Cava. It’s a fraction of the price of the latter and, according to many drinkers, tastes far better than the former.

Look out for ‘el método tradicional’ or traditional method on the label, as this means the sparkling wine has undergone secondary fermentation. Just like Champagne.

Sherry also comes from the Jerez region and is a good alternative to a bottle of wine.

And you needn’t worry about flying with wine – you can safely do so in most instances .

glass carafe compote on white background

A porró is a Spanish glass carafe with a pouring spout. It’s used for letting wine breathe before sharing with friends or family.

Porrón were first used in northern Spain, but may be used or sold all over the country. The unusual shape makes this an eye-catching gift – it’s like a hybrid between a funnel and a regular pitcher.

slicing jamon, knife

If you – or they – are serious about Iberico ham, then a professional style jamonero may make a perfect gift from Spain. As might a proper ham slicing knife.

A jamonero is a stand that holds the ham in place while you carve -a a must for many who buy whole legs to send or take home.

While they not seem like essentials, using a decent stand and a good quality carving knife means you can achieve those thin, almost transparent slices that will delight any connoisseur.

As well as creating that melt-in-the-mouth texture, a jamonero and the right knife will also make that ham leg stretch much further, making the most of every delicious morsel.

Carbon Steel Paella Pan

Whether it’s already their signature dish or they simply love all things seafood, a proper paella pan is essential for making a Paella recipe the right way.

It also looks stunning when presented at the center of the dining table, ready to everyone to dig in and feast on rice flavored with paprika and saffron, studded with fresh mussels, prawns and chunks of chicken.

Or whatever ingredients happen to be in the recipe they prefer. There are so many variations, and each region – or indeed every cook – will have their own favorite.

If you visit Valencia, then you must not only try their authentic paella, but really should think about taking a paella pan home with you.

The famous rice dish was born in this region and other Spaniards tend to think of it as a Valencian specialty rather than a national dish.

spanish tapas dish

Glazed terracotta tapas dishes are popular the world over. The classic style looks good in any kitchen, and the glazed finish is naturally non-stick for easier cooking and serving.

This type of Spanish ceramics has so many uses beyond preparing tapas. They are also great for use as small serving bowls, or for popping in the oven when you want to cook or heat a small quantity of food.

This is the kind of gift that rapidly becomes an indispensable kitchen item, whether you’re using it to hold a dip like aioli, hummus or guacamole or for cooking with.

These cazuelas, or cazuelitas (smaller ones) are also great in terms of heat retention.

cafetera

A Spanish coffee maker is the ideal gift for the caffeine addict in your life. It’s a small stove-top pot that you add water and coffee to before heating.

In just a few minutes, the perfect espresso awaits. These little gadgets are available all over Spain and make perfect presents for coffee fans.

cook book concept

With an impressive culinary heritage spanning olive oil production, meat curing, rich spices and much more, Spain is a great place to pick up a cookbook for a friend or loved one.

Delicious dishes keen cooks will want to recreate at home include paella and tapas, but there are many recipes for regional specialties to taste too.

If they like creating homemade meals for a family, lover or friends, then a Spanish cookbook is sure to go down a storm. Just make sure it’s in English if they don’t speak Spanish!

Clothing gifts from Spain

Spanish scarfs on a local market, Sevilla, Spain

The well-dressed ladies of Spain will often be seen wearing elegant scarves, and these can be very inexpensive to buy. It’s an instant way to add glamour and color to any outfit.

A scarf can of course be a useful accessory during winter, when it’s worn around the neck to ward off chills. It can also be worn on the head in place of a sun hat during summer.

It should be easy to find a lovely scarf or two if you search in the local gift shops or boutiques, or when visiting a market in Spain.

Pairs of Colorful Espadrilles

Espadrilles are traditional Spanish footwear featuring a canvas upper and a sole made from rope. The heel may be flat or wedge-shaped. Sometimes they are slip-ons, or may have an ankle strap.

The name comes from the esparto rope used to make the flexible soles. This casual footwear may also be referred to as alpargatas in Spanish, espartinak in Basque regions or espardenyes in Catalonia, northern Spain.

With authentic versions available in Spain at great value prices, a pair of genuine espadrilles tends to offer far more bang for your buck than designer items sold in other countries.

Spanish Flamenco dresses

Another item that’s quintessentially Spanish is the flamenco dress. This flamboyant type of gown is traditionally worn by dancers, particularly in the Seville area.

You can buy these traditional Spanish dresses all over Spain, and they come in shorter styles as well as long lengths. Vibrant red is a typical color, though this may be toned down by using the shade as an accent rather than the main hue.

The skirt is shaped a little like a fishtail, and ends in a series of flouncy frills. These add instant drama to what might otherwise be a fairly unremarkable dress.

leather bags and accessories

Spain is famous for the quality of its leather goods, and they’re sold all over the country from local markets to small, local boutiques or large department stores in the cities.

Options range from belts and handbags to purses, jackets and shoes. The great news is that Spanish leather goods tend to be available at incredibly good value prices too.

Spanish leather has in fact been immortalized in a variety of ways. There is a musky, spicy woody fragrance bearing the name made by a men’s barber shop based in London.

Bob Dylan also wrote a song called Boots of Spanish Leather , said to be about a former girlfriend of the musical superstar. It was released in 1964. Various artists have since covered the track.

If someone you know is a fan of soccer – or football as it’s called in Europe – then a football shirt in their size is a dead cert as a gift.

You can buy a replica shirt just like those worn by the national team, or opt for a local club like Real Madrid or FC Barcelona.

If you’re vacationing in those regions, then surely a souvenir shirt is a must for any fan of ‘footie’.

It’s not just Barcelona and Madrid that turn out great football players – other highly regarded teams include Zaragoza, Valencia, Sevilla, Málaga, Villarreal, Celta Vigo and Deportivo de La Coruña. Atlético Madrid is also a popular and successful club.

Many key matches are played during the Christmas period, so if you’re seeking a festive gift in particular then that’s perhaps another reason to opt for a Spanish soccer shirt.

A football shirt from a top Spanish club is also one of the easiest gifts to post or carry home.

gold jwelry diamonds with reflection

Spanish gold is of a higher quality than that sold in other European countries, making Spain a popular place in which to buy investment pieces or special gifts.

The nine carat gold jewelry sold in Britain, for instance, is unheard of in Spain. For a while yellow gold fell out of favor with the public, but has been back on the fashion scene for a number of years now.

If you want a designer look, then recommended brands include PDPaola, Tous, UNO de 50, Sansouers and Majorica. White gold, silver and platinum jewelry is also available.

You could also look out for jewelry with a Spanish theme, such as a map or text reflecting the destination.

Miscellaneous gifts from Spain

Handmade small colorful decorated Spanish tablecloths

Gorgeous tablecloths are often spotted for sale at markets and stores across Spain, and sometimes these have been handcrafted.

The Malaga region is the ideal place to snap up a beautiful tablecloth at a bargain price. They may be colorful or more muted in tone, with a wide variety of designs available to brighten any kitchen table.

Patterns may call to mind the spices or fruits of Spain, or even flamenco. Some are more Moorish in appearance, especially when you’re shopping in the south of the country.

Colors range from citrus shades or terracotta red to a cool, deep blue.

varied group of ceramic abjects in a spanish pattern on display shelves

Spain has a long tradition of making beautiful, colorful ceramic pieces. These are often handmade by local artisans, particularly in southern regions like Andalusia.

Options range from small dishes or spoon rests to larger decorative pieces like jugs, plates or even plant pots. These will liven up any interior or outside space.

As unique gifts, Spanish ceramics are very affordable, and can sometimes be personalized to make them even more of a one-off.

A hand painted Spanish olive oil bottle makes an ideal gift, especially if you want to decant the liquid gold from a can into a more aesthetically pleasing container.

Shop full of damascening plate handicrafts, Toledo

Often associated with the city of Toledo in central Spain , damascene refers to the art of embellishing steel with threads of silver, copper or gold.

Damascene ware may be available to buy as small items like jewelry, or larger pieces like decorative plates. It may also come as items like a sword or small storage box.

The metallic shades contrasting against a black steel background results in a piece that is dramatic, opulent and bohemian.

It’s certainly a striking effect, and Damascene ware is one of the more unusual items from Spain to give as a gift.

European Travel Guides

If they’re heading to Spain themselves – perhaps on vacation or to visit friends or family based in the country – then a travel guide to Spain makes a great gift.

You can of course purchase these outside the country, but there’s something a little more special about obtaining one from the very destination the book is about.

There are many travel guides to Spain as a whole to choose from, or you could opt for a book focusing on the specific region they intend to visit.

olive wood tableware on dark wooden background

As Spain produces such vast quantities of olive oil, a natural by-product is olive wood. This is used to make all sorts of items, from serving bowls or cutting boards to larger pieces of furniture.

With a multi-toned, marbled appearance, this type of wood is very attractive and has in the past been used to make items of religious importance.

An olive wood product is also one of the best gifts for anyone with an interest in food or home decor. So that’s pretty much anyone, really!

bright colors traditional spanish fans

Spanish fans have been popular as gift items for decades, and designs range from the pleasingly kitsch to the downright naff – or even, in some cases, the genuinely beautiful.

These fans are great for cooling off on a hot summer’s day, or alternatively may be used as cute decorative items for the home. Displaying one on a wall is always popular.

Fans are widely available in Spain and are without doubt one of those gifts that people instinctively associate with this particular part of the world.

Kids in particular will love to receive their own authentic fan from Spain, and are likely to adore the more colorful, out-there designs.

If you want the real deal, look out for a fan that was made in Spain and preferably one that was painted by hand.

photograph of an acoustic classical spanish guitar

This one’s a little more niche than most, but an authentic guitar from Spain makes a cool home accessory in addition to being an ideal gift for any musician.

A flamenco guitar is a little different from a standard instrument. It’s similar to the classic guitar, but tends to have less bracing inside and more slimline tops.

The difference in the design is reflected in the sound, which varies from that made by a standard guitar. It’s a little more spirited and grainy, reflecting the energy and color of the flamenco tradition.

If you want one of the world’s finest Spanish guitars, look for brands like Prudencio Saez, Ramirez, Alhambra, Raimundo, Camps or Admira Guitars. These are all designed and made in Spain.

spanish castanets, young woman dancing flamenco with catanets

Castanets are quintessentially Spanish and a set makes a fun gift for fans of music or Spain. They are a small percussion instrument that’s traditionally made from wood.

If you’re shopping for kids or a cheap souvenir, plastic versions are also available. The hand-held instrument is played by knocking the pieces together with the fingers, or castanets can be used for decorative purposes.

Some sets have a plain, polished wood finish, while others may feature more colorful designs. If you want something authentic, go for a more subtle wooden set that was actually produced in Spain.

Spain gifts – FAQs

The gifts most associated with Spain include food and drinks produced in this part of Europe.

Typical examples are Spanish olive oil, cured meats like Iberico ham, spices such as saffron and paprika, sweet treats and still or sparkling wines or sherry.

Other options include clothing, footwear and accessories made from materials like Spanish leather, musical instruments, Spanish ceramics, jewelry and homeware items.

Flower pots on facades in the streets of Cordova, Spain

If you want to give a gift when in Spain, good choices that will always go down well include flowers, sweets or chocolates or a good quality bottle of wine.

Items like this can be shared between the family members, and are likely to be opened upon receipt.

For children, souvenirs make good trinkets for them to play with or display. If you can, items from your own country may be a novelty for a Spanish child.

The first thing to know about Christmas gifting in Spain is that children there often receive gifts on 6th January rather than 25th December. Many, however, do open some on Christmas Day as well.

These gifts are said to come from the Three Wise Men, or Three Kings, rather than Father Christmas or Santa Claus. They can be anything really, just as at ‘Navidad’ across the rest of the world.

Etiquette experts advise against giving anything too extravagant as a gift, as this could be perceived as a bribe of sorts.

Giving a gift when invited to a Spanish home is good practice, however, and safe bets include flowers, food or wine as well as items reflecting where the guest comes from.

Items that you can only buy in Spain are by definition special, as are items that are associated with a particular country, city or region.

While you can order most items online from anywhere in the world, there’s no substitute for sampling local wines, cheeses and meats, smelling leather goods as you browse the stalls or seeing for yourself the glossy glaze or colorful patterns on Spanish ceramics.

Whether it’s delicious local foods, some of the best wines in the world, an item to cook with or something to wear, a visit to Spain gives you a unique opportunity to snap up some one-off goods.

Lots of products available in Spain make great presents – assuming you can bear to part with them, that is!

So make sure you cover the cost of some items for yourself when budgeting for your trip – and don’t miss the chance to sample some delicious Spanish food and drinks either. All in the name of research, of course!

Spanish phrasebook.

Learning Spanish is fun (ok, super fun) and essential, but the language differences between all Spanish-speaking countries can be pretty significant, and that includes the accent, words, and phrases.

I can actually think of a specific word they use all the time in Spain (related to public transport), but unless you want to sound dirty and creepy, you should never say it in Argentina.

That’s why a Spain-oriented Spanish phrasebook and dictionary can be very useful for people who are always planning their next trip to Spain and want to show off their Spanish without making any funny boo-boos.

Artisans from the city of Toledo produce beautiful items using a unique ancient technique called damascening in which they inlay gold and silver into steel.

On Etsy, you’ll find beautiful authentic items like jewelry, plates, and brooches, which can be a great gift for the right person (it’s produced in other countries too, so make sure to look for Toledo Damascene).

Flamenco Dress

It’s probably the most obvious Spanish gift idea, but I do wonder what one will do with a flamenco dress.

Also, many of the dresses sold online are either costumes or not made in Spain, so that’s something to check and consider if you’re looking for an authentic item.

You can check out this store on Esty that sells vintage flamenco dresses.

Cooking and Foodie Spanish Gifts

Spanish food is a lot more than just paella and tapas. Not that I have anything against them (totally the opposite), but there are dozens of regional dishes most people don’t know.

So what’s better than a cookbook filled with traditional Spanish recipes to win a foodie’s heart?

spain travel gifts

Spanish Olive Oil

If there’s one quirky thing to know about me, is that I HATE olives (like really hate and am disgusted by them more than any other person I’ve ever met). Funny enough, I LOVE olive oil.

And if I’m going to buy olive oil, I’ll choose the best of the best, which is, of course, Spanish olive oil. Even with insane quantities produced in the country (about 50% of the world’s olive oil), its quality is always at the top, making it a fantastic gift for a foodie who loves Spain.

Rincón de la Subbética is an award-winning brand, but you’ll find many others on Amazon.

Spanish Turron

For those who love nougats, it doesn’t get any better than the Spanish turron. It’s an essential Christmastime treat, but you can buy it all year round in Spain and online.

One of the biggest brands that make this nougat is Turrones Vicens , a family-owned company working since 1775. I’ve tasted some of their turrones in Madrid , and they were delicious.

On Amazon, you can currently buy turron by El Almendro .

I’ve tried making paella at home a couple of times, and it was tasty, but it wasn’t even close to the traditional paella I had devoured in Valencia . I think I’m pretty good at cooking, but I guess I’m not that skilled.

That said, it was important for me to use an authentic paella pan and the ingredients I had bought in Spain. I know it would be for any foodie trying to make paella.

So check out this super cute, highly-rated paella kit on Amazon that any Spanish food lover would surely appreciate. I know I totally would.

spain travel gifts

Spanish Saffron and Paprika

If you don’t want to buy the entire kit, at least look for the key spices in this amazing dish – saffron and paprika from Spain.

Spanish Food Gift Basket

You can never go wrong with a gift basket. Seriously, is there anyone who doesn’t love to get them? Check out the Spain-themed ones you can find on La Tienda .

Spanish Wines

One of the best Spain related gifts has to be wine. From Sherry to Rioja to Cava (my favorite), who doesn’t love Spanish wines? It’s such a classic gift that never fails. See all wines and prices here.

Churro Maker

One of my all-time favorite things to eat in Spain is churros with chocolate. Now, I’m not that great at making them at home, but if you know someone who is, a churro maker would be a perfect gift.

Think about it – they’ll get to enjoy their gift, and you’ll probably get churros – it’s a win-win situation!

spain travel gifts

Olive Wood Kitchen Accessories

Products made with Spanish olive wood are absolutely gorgeous and make the most fantastic gift. Check out these beautiful pieces on La Tienda.

It’s not the sexiest piece of clothing but definitely a cute gift for Spain lovers who like to cook.

spain travel gifts

Manchego Cheese

I feel a bit weird about buying cheese online, but Manchego is such a delicious Spanish cheese that I had to add it as a gift for people who love Spain. You can find it on La Tienda and even on Amazon.

What to buy in Spain

Gift ideas from spain and things to buy in each region.

If you are planning a trip to Spain and you are wondering what to buy in Spain you are at the right place. Do you have someone n your life that just loves Spain? Are you looking to buy some cool gifts from Spain? Well, you are in the right place.

Our team of local guides has curated this list of authentic,  traditional, and awesome gifts from Spain, that can be purchased from anywhere!

Table of Contents

Best gifts from spain.

Spanish guitar

Hand made authentic Spanish guitar

One of the things Spain is most well known for across the globe is flamenco, the passionate and sensual art that originated in Andalusia. One of the essential components to flamenco, and an100% Spanish instrument, is the flamenco guitar.

A traditional flamenco guitar is made of Spanish cypress, sycamore, or rosewood for the back and sides, and spruce for the top. This explains its characteristic body color.

The Flamenco guitar produces an entirely unique sound, that no other guitar can emulate. The build, the shape, the strings, all contribute to make that characteristic flamenco sound.

Flamenco guitars are usually lighter with thinner tops than classical guitars, which produces a “brighter” and more percussive sound quality. there is also less internal bracing which makes the guitar more resonant.

Volume has also traditionally been very important for flamenco guitarists, as they must be heard over the sound of the dancers’ nailed shoes.

Manton de Manila

Mantón de Manila

The Mantón de manila is the characteristic silk shawl that you see wrapped around female flamenco dancers. The Mantón, however, is a garment that was popularized in Madrid, not in Andalusia as you might expect. They were originally made in China and were popular in the Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines during the colonial era.

Mantón de Manila literally means, “blanket from Manila. The mantón has this name because silk fabrics were, in the beginning, a Chinese monopoly, prompting the Spanish Empire to restrict silk trade with China and ultimately banning it altogether in 1718.

Protests soon followed however in Manila, the middlemen in the operation, and the silk ban was lifted in 1734, though it required silk to pass through Manila. This monopoly of Manila was later consolidated with the creation of the Royal Company of the Philippines in 1795.

It was first  adopted by Chulas y Manolas  in Spain, upper-class women from certain neighborhoods in Madrid, that would drape Chinese silk scarf on their shoulders as a fashion statement and a status symbol.

Iberico ham

Iberico Ham

There are several delicacies from Spain that are known around the world and Iberico Ham is most definitely one of them. Iberico is actually a breed of pig that is indigenous to Spain that is more closely related to wild boar than it is to modern farm pigs.

Iberico pigs are traditionally and famously fed acorns that give the meat its characteristic flavor. There is a whole, a complicated system of classification of the hams, depending on how many acorns the pigs have eaten and in what period of time. We have an extensive article you can check out if you want to  do a deep dive on Iberico ham .

Andalusian ceramics

Andalusian Ceramics

If you have aver traveled to Andalusia, you probably noticed the wide-spread use of ceramics as decoration. This tradition is a legacy of the Moorish occupation of the Iberian peninsula. Decorative tiles were hand-painted with a technique called “cuerda seca” and they were used to decorate the exterior of estates and important civil and religious buildings. Andalusia has been an important producer of ceramic since the 6th century BC.

True, handcrafted Andalusian Ceramics are some of the most beautiful and highest quality ceramics in the world . These works of art are the perfect decorative piece that gives out an authentically Spanish vibe.

There are few gifts from Spain out there more accessible than a Paella. As we have explained in a previous article on  how to make a traditional Valencian Paella , a paella is actually the pan in which the rice dish is made, it’s not called a paella pan or a paellera. No dish is more emblematic of Spain, and to make the perfect paella you need a good pan.

In our article, we go into great detail on how to make an authentic paella from Valencia, but the proper shape of the pan is essential for the proper cooking of the rice, which should be of the “bomba” variety. If you want to go all the way, you will also need to get your hands on orange tree wood and cook outdoors.

Paella to prepare rice

Espardenyes

This Catalonian creation is mandatory for any Spaniard that is headed to the beach, ready to kick back and relax. Espardenyes are the traditional footwear of Catalonian laborers and now have become what Spaniards strap to their feet to go to the beach. So much so that they are associated  much more to the Balearic Islands  of the coast of Catalonia, than with Catalonia itself.

Espardenyes are light and airy and actually quite fashionable. A good, hand made pair, makes for a great gift.

Damasquino from Toledo

The Medieval city of Toledo  was once world-renowned for its metalwork. It was where the best armor and medieval weapons were produced. This is because Toledo was a melting pot of cultures.

Christians, Jews, and Moors lived together peacefully, and famously shared knowledge, techniques, and know-how regarding many different subjects. These three cultures developed some of the most advanced metalworking techniques the world had ever seen.

But Toledo was also known for beautiful, more delicate metalwork as well. Damasquina is the technique of inlaying gold into burnt steel, and the result is spectacularly beautiful and makes for an excellent romantic gift.

spain travel gifts

It can get swelteringly hot in certain regions of Spain in the summer. Spaniards have a number of rather ingenious solutions for dealing with the heat: the siesta, white villages, and the abanico or handheld fan. A common accessory you will see used by Spaniards use even to this day.

It can be sort of a kitschy, touristy purchase, but a good hand made fan is a piece of art.

THINGS TO BUY IN EACH REGION

Chulapo in San Isidro

Best things to buy in Madrid

Traditional violet flavored candies,  very typical of Madrid . With a torrid back story involving a monarch, his wife, and his lover. A story for another time. The original store that popularized the candy is still in business, located in Plaza Canalejas, in the center of the city. This shop has been selling little else since 1915.

Cava is Catalonian sparkling white wine. Cava requires very specific conditions and production methods to be considered cava, and it is some of the most delicious wine you can taste in Spain.

Best things to buy in Valencia

A paella,  as we have mentioned in previous articles , is actually the pan in which the classic dish is cooked. Paella was invented in the marshy area, just outside of  the city of Valencia ,  known as the Albufera . A good paella should be made with iron, it should be wide and shallow, and should be used outdoors over an orangewood fire, for optimal authenticity.

Horchata is a Spanish delicacy. Horchata IS NOT Mexican, and it is not made with rice milk. It is traditionally made with tiger nuts in a process similar to that used for making nut milk. Horchata is served ice cold, with a side of fartons, a long thin pastry.

bottles of sherry wine

Best things to buy in Andalusia

Jerez, sherry wine

Sherry from  the coastal town of Cádiz , specifically from Jerez de la Frontera is a uniquely Spanish product that has a long and storied history. There are different varieties, for every palate, from super dry to super sweet. We recommend trying all of them, just in case.

Spanish / flamenco guitar

A very specific guitar, designed exclusively for flamenco. Enough said.

Andalusian ceramics

There are several different techniques that Andalusian ceramic describes, but the ceramic from Andalucia is well known across the world for its quality and vibrant colors. The techniques and traditions that characterize this style are an inheritance of the Moorish occupation of the peninsula.

Jaen and Cordoba are the 2 key producers of olivie oil in Andalusia (and Spain). Excellent quality and lanscapes full of old olive trees!

Best things to buy in Castilla la Mancha

Olive oil and Manchego cheese

Two of Spain’s most famous gastronomic exports. The region of Castilla la Mancha is the Mecca for these two products, and they have to be featured on this list.

A seasonal sweet made with almonds, sugar, and eggs, of Moorish origin. Enjoying a mazapán and a coffee in  the medieval city of Toledo  is a religious experience that everybody should experience once in their life.

Toledo Jewelry or Sword

This might be the most “tourist-y” thing on this list, but Toledo was once the epicenter of metalwork in Europe. Toledo produced the best armor and weapons in the world and also some of the finest and most lavish jewelry (in particular Damasquina) in the world. If you are interested in either, just make sure to buy artisanal.

Ceramics from Galicia

Best things to buy in Galicia

Galician Octopus

Spanish octopus in general is a world-renowned delicacy, but within Spain, Galician Octopus is the best of the best. Served on a wooden plate, over a bed of boiled (Galician) potatoes, with paprika, salt, and olive oil. Simple and delicious.

Rias Baixas white wine

For white wine lovers, this is a no brainer. Galicia, as a coastal region, is well known for its excellent seafood, and they have developed the perfect wine to accompany these dishes.

Iberico ham

Best things to buy in Extremadura

Best things to buy in Cantabria

Sobaos passiegos

Sobaos are buttery, fluffy slices of heaven, and Cantabria is where these lovely little pastries were developed. Sobaos are traditionally served for breakfast but you will probably find yourself sneaking one as a snack at random times during the day.

txapelas from basque country

Best things to buy in Basque Country

Txacoli Wine

A completely unique wine because of its flavor, which is almost more similar to cider, and in the way it must be served: from a certain height, out of a certain spout, into a certain glass. Txacoli can only be found in the Basque Country and is a must.

Gerriko y Txapela

These two garments are the iconic staples of the traditional Basque garb. A txapella is a black beret style hat and the Gerriko is the traditional red, cloth belt that is so iconic.

bottles of Asturian cider

Best things to buy in Asturias

Asturias has a noticeable Celtic influence. One way this influence is manifested is in the preference of Cider over wine in this region. Sidra Asturiana is a staple, and in Spain, there is no other option if you are looking for an apple spirit.

spain travel gifts

Yes, this is kind of a touristy thing to bring back from the islands, but with good reason. If you can get your hands on a well made, artisanal ensaimada, lookout.

Best things to buy in Rioja

There is not much more to say. Rioja is considered to be one of the best wine regions in the world, if not THE best, and wine is king in La Rioja. It’s important to note here that not all wine produced in La Rioja is Rioja wine. Rioja is a denomination of origin and a wine is required to meet certain production methods and quality standards to be referred to as a Rioja wine.

The Best Souvenirs From Spain

When planning your journey to  Spain , be sure to leave room in your bags to bring back souvenirs like a leather wine bottle, a Spanish fan, or a bottle of sherry.

Whether you're shopping for the perfect gift for a loved one or just want to get yourself something to remember your trip by, there are plenty of local shops around major tourist destinations like  Barcelona  and  Madrid  where you can support local artists and bring home a piece of the culture.

Keep in mind that some items like handmade swords and Spanish spices may require additional screening at the airport—and most definitely cannot be packed in a carry-on bag—so check travel restrictions on your airline before making a major purchase of items like these.

Bullfighting Poster From Seville

Every "best souvenir" list needs at least one tacky item that really encapsulates being a tourist in another country, and for Spain, that item is a bullfighting poster from Seville with your name on it where the bullfighter's name usually appears. Although these are particularly popular in Seville, they can be found wherever there is a bullring. Great for kids, these bullrings also typically print flamenco posters as well—in case you have a dancer in the family. To find vendors that make these, look out for signs that say " tu nombre aqui ," which means "your name here" in Spanish.

Sword From Toledo

Toledo has been famous for its steel for centuries and its swords and shields were equipping Europe's cavalry right up until firearms rendered them useless. Made now exclusively for tourists, they are still good quality and perfect for fans of historic weaponry. If you don't have a real need for a sword, a letter opener made from Toledo steel can be bought for about $12. Whichever one you buy, though, keep in mind it will either need to be shipped home to the United States or stored in your checked luggage—if it fits.

Sherry From Jerez

Wine is made throughout Spain, but none is as distinctive as  vino de Jerez , known as sherry in English. If you've never tasted sherry, expect something a little different from your usual wine. The particular ambient weather of Jerez and the way in which sherries are fortified give them an unusual taste that takes a little getting used to.

You can buy bottles of sherry in Jerez for around $6, but an even better souvenir would be to bring your own bottle to a tabanco  (sherry bar) in Jerez and ask them to fill you up straight from the barrel. Jerez is also home to Spanish brandy, a more grapey version of cognac that's easier on the palette.

Spanish Fan From Barcelona

A hot summer's day in Spain is not complete without middle-aged Spanish women fanning themselves with an abanico . They might seem a bit tacky but Spanish women swear by them, and they're actually quite effective for buildings that don't have air conditioning. Abanicos in Spain originated around the same time Flamenco dancing became popular there and have been used by nobility and performers alike for centuries.

Flamenco Music From Madrid

Flamenco is still alive and popular throughout Andalusia, Madrid, and Barcelona, where you can go into a specialist flamenco store and ask the assistant for help in choosing a CD. Although there are many top Flamenco artists for you to consider, you can also check out new talent on the streets of Spain or head to one of the many  flamenco festivals  around the country in the summer. Buy your favorite act's record so you can share the culture and music with your friends and family back home.

Jamón Iberico (Spanish Cured Ham) From Huelva

The Spanish talk about their ham like the French speak of their wine. Cured for at least a year, often two, jamón is a staple part of every Spaniard's diet. Sadly, they are a bit of the "emperor's new clothes" about it and much of the meat is a little unpalatable for those not brought up on it. Buy your jamón from Huelva , Salamanca, or the Alpujarras, near Granada ; the chorizo  (spicy sausage) is good from there, too.

Kukuxumusu T-Shirt From Madrid

Although this popular Spanish brand of t-shirts can be found all over the country, this Basque company has a store in Madrid near the Metro: Opera house. Just like when visiting New York City, you can get an "I (Heart) Madrid" t-shirt or opt for a more creative homage to your vacation in Spain.

Saffron From Granada

Saffron, or  azafrán  in Spanish, is an essential ingredient in paella and makes any Spanish dish taste more authentic. Saffron is rather expensive when imported to the United States, so buying it domestically in Spain could save you some money and give you better ingredients to bring home. The cheapest place to get this spice is near the cathedral in Granada, where merchants also sell other spices like té Pakistani , a black tea with cinnamon, vanilla, and cardamom pods.

Bota (Leather Wine Bottle) From Sigüenza

You can pretend you're a Spanish peasant taking the long journey from your home in the countryside to the market in the next town over with a  bota , a leather wine bottle perfect for drinking on the go. The black version is the authentic one and costs about $36 while the pale one is a touristy one that is significantly cheaper.

All botas  have tiny drinking holes; the idea is to squirt the wine into your mouth without the bottle touching your lips, which may take a little while to get used to but learning how is quite a bit of fun. Although it's not recommended that you fill your bota with  Spanish wine  before your flight home, you are more than welcome to bring your new souvenir with you on one of many  wine tours of Spain  while you're there.

Olive Oil From Andalusia

Spanish olive oil is some of the best in the world—despite what the Italians and Greeks say—and Jaen in Andalusia makes half of all that is made in Andalusia , a third of all of Spain's oil, and a tenth of that consumed in the entire world. It might be a little difficult to carry large quantities home, so either buy a small ornamental bottle (and refill it constantly with Spanish oil bought at home) or fill every last space in your luggage before you leave Spain with some larger bottles. Every grocery store in Spain stocks an impressive selection of olive oils.

Popular Spanish Souvenirs

1. calendar.

Do you know that friend who is extremely organised? They’ll love a calendar in which they can write all their important events – birthdays, appointments, time off work, etc.

2. Coffee mugs

spanish cups

Mugs are perfect for a coffee, tea or hot chocolate lover. I love buying mugs as souvenirs because I know it’s something I’ll constantly use.

The best mugs have an original design, such as those with a mosaic pattern. You’ll find plenty of these in Barcelona.

3. Football shirt

Football is the most popular sport in Spain – half of the sports news is about football, especially about Real Madrid and Barcelona , the two big teams and rivals.

If you have a special person who’s crazy about Spanish football, they’ll love you forever if you get them an official football shirt.

4. Jewellery

Most women love jewellery, so you won’t go wrong with this gift.

A famous jewellery shop is Platónica which sells a unique jewellery collection that goes beyond beauty. Their jewellery is inspired by culture, literature and art, which makes it a unique gift.

In addition to this, you’ll also find that many small towns sell their original handmade traditional rings, necklaces, etc.

You’ll never go wrong with buying a keyring as a souvenir. Everyone loves them! They’re cheap and small, so you don’t need to worry about making some space in your luggage.

Magnets are great souvenirs, and no matter how small they are, anyone will appreciate that you remembered them and bought them when travelling in Spain.

They are very affordable and don’t occupy much in your suitcase (something to consider if you always end up overpacking!) Magnets are, in fact, one of the most traditional Spanish gifts.

7. Phone case

It isn’t the most common souvenir, but when it comes to Spain-themed gifts, the options are endless. You can find phone cases with different designs – from the traditional Spain flag to funny phrases.

8. Postcards

Postcard from Barcelona.

Who doesn’t know someone who collects postcards from all around the world? I mean, they’re a great addition to your wall, and they can bring you travel memories or remind you of people you know.

A fun souvenir is getting a puzzle, and yes, puzzles aren’t only for kids. There are so many incredible puzzles – from traditional to 3D puzzles.

During my trip to Barcelona, I visited the impressive Sagrada Familia, and I remember that I saw this cool 3D puzzle of Sagrada Familia in their official shop. Puzzles like this one are quite original and unique!

10. Shot glass

Everyone has a friend who loves shots (chupitos in Spanish), so why don’t you get them a shot glass? You’ll find them in any souvenir shop, and they tend to be very affordable too.

11. T-shirt

What souvenir is more traditional than a t-shirt? There are plenty of cool t-shirts – not only those ones that say “I love Spain.”

12. Wall art

Wall art is definitely one of my favourite gifts because you don’t only hang it on the wall to decorate your room. It’s a meaningful gift because every time you see this picture, it makes you want to go back to that place and brings you good and funny memories.

If it’s from somewhere you haven’t been before, every time you see it, it’ll make you want to go to that place as soon as possible.

Spanish gifts for travellers

13. luggage tag and passport holder.

If you’re looking for a different luggage tag and passport holder, then you can get one with a Spain theme. This is a gift you can sometimes personalise too.

14. Spain scratch map

One of the best gifts for travellers is a scratch map. Not only does it decorate your room, but it’s exciting to mark another place you’ve visited.

If your friend loves visiting Spain, you can get a Spain scratch map rather than a map that includes the world or a continent.

15. Spanish gift experience

Cristina and partner at Puerto Banus, Marbella, Spain

Experiences are way better than gifts, and if you want to surprise someone special who loves Spain, you can book an activity or buy a gift box experience for two , from a city break to Barcelona or Madrid to wine tasting or adventure activity.

16. Spanish language book

If you’re looking for gifts for language lovers, a Spanish phrasebook or language book will be happily received. As someone who loves learning new languages, I’m over the moon when I receive a gift like this.

You can get any books from basic Spanish language books to advance. For those who know the language well, you may want to have a look at books that include funny sayings and idioms from a specific region.

17. Travel guides

There is plenty of travel information on the internet that can be overwhelming. Sometimes having all the important information in one place does help when planning a trip, and that’s what a travel guide does.

Or simply, some people love the feeling of opening a book or guide rather than their phones. When it comes to travel guides about Spain , I highly recommend Lonely Planet guides because they always have the essential information you need.

Overall, a travel guide is one of the best Spain-themed gifts for travellers.

18. Travel Journal

Travel journals are useful for any traveller who loves documenting their trips. It’s absolutely amazing going back to your notes and remembering those good memories from your trip to Spain.

Also, other people use journals to keep track of attractions, hidden gems, or great restaurants that they want to recommend to others.

Spanish gifts for culture lovers

19. board games.

Board games are very useful for anyone who is learning Spanish or wants to learn about Spanish culture. They’re also fun and interactive!

20. Christmas decorations

A close up photo of a nativity scene.

Spain has many Christmas traditions, events, and unique Christmas ornaments. You can get a nativity scene (called Belén in Spanish) or other ornaments that are traditional in certain parts of Spain.

For example, Caga Tío originated in Catalonia, a wooden log covered in a blanket and given a warm, smiley face.

21. Colouring books

Colouring books are perfect for all ages – kids have fun colouring, and adults love being creative and disconnecting from everything while colouring.

This Spain colouring book is amazing because you visit Spain’s most remarkable attractions while you go through its pages.

When it comes to figures, the options are endless – bulls, chameleons, and emblematic Spanish monuments, among others. They’re a great addition to your shelves or desk.

23. Flamenco castanets

Every flamenco lover must own their castanets even if they don’t know how to play this traditional instrument.

When looking for flamenco castanets, make sure they’re handmade and manufactured in Spain for the best quality.

This is one of the best Spain-themed gifts for flamenco fans.

24. Flamenco dress

Women dressed with traditional dressed for malaga's fair.

A flamenco dress is a special gift for any music and culture lover. However, they can be pricey.

If you’re buying a flamenco dress in Spain, you need to know that the ones from Seville are the best. You can even order a customised flamenco dress, although these prices increase.

Alternatively, you can find flamenco dresses online but look at the manufacturer to ensure you’re ordering an authentic one.

25. Gaudí related home decorations

Are you visiting Barcelona ? Then you can’t leave the city without buying anything Gaudí related – puzzles, cups, jewellery or a Sagrada Familia miniature .

If you aren’t and just want to surprise someone who loves all Gaudi-related, then look at these beautiful decorations.

26. Spanish ceramics

ceramic shop in mijas pueblo

Spanish ceramics are incredibly beautiful; you’ll find anything from tiles and kitchenware to jars. They’re a great addition to your home design if you’re all about aesthetics.

Most ceramics are hand-painted, so it’s a special souvenir.

27. Spanish novel

For anyone who wants to travel to Spain from home, there’s no better gift than a novel set in Spain.

You can find traditional novels such as Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes and Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving to contemporary novels such as The Spanish Promise by Karen Swan .

28. Spanish fan

Spanish fans are associated with dancing, especially flamenco dance, as it’s the most used accessory in choreographies. However, you’re also likely to see older people using it during summer.

Even if you aren’t planning to use it, it’s a great decoration for your living room!

Spanish gifts for foodies

An original gift for a cook is an apron. Although you can find common ones with the flag of Spain, there are funnier and more original designs, such as aprons that look like a flamenco dress .

30. Churros maker

Who doesn’t like churros? Although you can’t compare eating churros in Spain with making churros at home, if you love that friend who has a sweet tooth and, of course, loves churros, they’ll be over the moon with a churro maker .

31. Coasters

Coasters are a good addition to someone else’s table; you can find them in many original designs. I especially love the coasters that have a Gaudí style design.

32. Cookbooks

Spanish recipes can be found all over the internet, but we all know someone who prefers a paper version of the book over a digital one.

You’ll find cookbooks about tapas, generic traditional dishes, and regional dishes such as Andalusia and the Basque Country.

If you feel a bit lost, here are some of the best cookbooks:

  • Tapas Revolution by Omar Allibhoy – easy-to-make tapas using everyday pantry staples.
  • The Food of Spain by Claudia Roden – authentic and diverse Spanish recipes highlighting Spanish culture.
  • 1080 Recipes: The Bible of Authentic Spanish Cooking by Ines Ortega and Simone Ortega – a collection of authentic Spanish recipes written by two reputable food authorities.

33. Iberian ham and charcuterie

Iberian ham is a traditional tapa and an easy food souvenir to take with you since you can buy hand-carved slices in packs that guarantee a long product life.

Apart from Iberian ham, you can also find other traditional Spanish charcuterie such as chorizo , morcilla or salchichón, which are different types of sausages.

34. Manchego cheese

Are you a cheese lover? Manchego cheese is the most-eaten cheese in Spain. As its name suggests, it comes from the La Mancha region and is made of sheep milk.

Although you can find different varieties of Manchego, the taste is very similar – sweet and fruity.

35. Olive oil

A bottle of Spanish olive oil.

A funny fact is that I’ve absolutely hated olives since I was a kid. I remember complaining about putting olives on the table when my family was gathering. If you don’t know, olives are a popular snack in Spain – whether it’s at home or in a tapas bar.

However, I love olive oil, and it’s the oil I cook all the time, so it’s important for me to get a good extra virgin olive oil . If you’re a bit fussy about the quality of the oil, then you want to get one from Spain.

36. Paella kit

Paella is the most traditional dish in Spain! This dish originated in Valencia; it’s what Spain food is known for. There are different types of paellas – seafood, meat, seafood and meat, vegetarian, etc.

If you know someone who loves paella and cannot wait to go back to Spain to have one, they’ll be surprised by a paella kit.

Paella kits often include a traditional steel Paella pan, Bomba rice, extra virgin olive oil, saffron and smoked paprika, all the essential ingredients you need to cook a delicious paella.

37. Polvorones

If you have a sweet tooth, you must try a polvorón, a sweet that consists of crumbly Spanish shortbread made of flour, sugar, milk, and nuts. They’re typically from Andalusia, and they’re normally eaten during the Christmas period.

You can find many types of polvorones , and they’re also very similar to mantecados.

Not everyone knows what a porrón is, and I didn’t know it until a few months ago when an expat in Spain told me about it.

A porrón is a traditional glass wine pitcher from which people drink without touching it with their lips. This wine pitcher comes from Catalonia and the north of Spain.

It’s definitely a unique gift for a foodie!

39. Saffron

When I’m in the UK, I miss some ingredients from home, so I always pack some saffron in my suitcase. I’ve tried saffron here, and it isn’t the same.

If you and your loved ones are crazy about paella, saffron is a great souvenir for a foodie.

40. Spanish cafetera

The coffee culture in Spain is big, and you can tell this by the number of different coffees you can find. Café con leche (coffee with milk) is the most popular, but you can also find cortado , solo , con hielo , bombón, and the list goes on.

Do you know anyone who loves coffee? If so, they’ll love a traditional Spanish cafetera to make a Spanish-style coffee. You can get it online or buy it in any supermarket in Spain.

41. Spanish food gift basket

If you’d like to take a bit of Spain’s taste to your friend, your best gift is a Spain food hamper . They normally include a wide variety of authentic Spanish products such as paella rice, crisps, pitted olives, Rioja wine, Iberico ham, etc.

They aren’t all expensive; depending on the online store and what the hamper contains, you’ll find different ingredients and prices.

42. Spanish nougat

If you love nougat, then you must try Spanish turron when you’re in Spain, especially if you visit Alicante . You can find it in supermarkets, some souvenir shops and Christmas markets.

The most traditional nougat is Turrón de Jijona , which is made of honey and ground almonds and has a soft and light texture. However, there are other types of nougats, such as Turrón de chocolate and Turrón duro .

If you’re looking for good brands, then you need to check out Torrons Vicens, El Abuelo and Casa Mira.

43. Terracotta dishes

You’ve probably seen terracotta dishes used in tapa bars in Spain, their design is simple, but they’re great to cook with. They retain the heat longer than any other dishes, so when you serve your food to the table, it will be served at the right temperature.

You don’t necessarily need to use them to serve warm meals; they can be used to serve almonds, olives and other cold dishes.

A close up photo of four bottles of wine produced in Malaga.

If you and your friends love wine, this is the perfect gift for you. Spain has several types of wine, and some of the most known are Rioja (red), Sherry (fortified), Albariño (white), Cava (sparkling) and Ribera del Duero (red).

Conclusion on the best Spain Themed Gifts

After reading this guide, I hope you know what to bring back from Spain or buy online if you don’t plan any trips to Spain.

What are your favourite Spanish-themed gifts? For me, it’s the mugs; I love receiving gifts that I’ll actually use.

They make for beautiful decorations in homes and gardens and smaller tiles can even be framed and displayed as artwork. So if it’s art and ensign you love then azulejos could be the perfect artistic mementos of your visit to Spain .

2. Spanish fans

‘Abanico’ are handheld fans and are a symbol of Spanish culture, particularly in Andalucia. They are wonderfully decorated and can be made from materials like wood, lace, and fabric. Fans have been used in Spain for centuries and have become closely associated with traditional flamenco dancing.

3. Flamenco dress from Spain

Flamenco is a famously passionate art form that is a huge part of Spanish culture. It encompasses music, dance and singing. It has deep historical and emotional significance and is a UNESCO-recognised cultural heritage and therefore a flamenco dress would absolutely be one of the best souvenirs from Spain to take home with you.

Spanish Flamenco Dress - what to buy in Spain

The traditional flamenco dress, known as a ‘traje de flamenca’ is a flamboyant and colourful dress that originated in Andalucia, the southern region of Spain, that women wear while dancing flamenco, and is characterised by their many ruffles and colours.

You can find ready-made flamenco dresses but many shops also offer custom-made options if you want to push the boat out and really get one of the best souvenirs from Spain! These can be tailored to your specific measurements and design preferences, ensuring a perfect fit and unique dress.

To find a traditional Spanish flamenco dress, you can explore specialised boutiques in cities like Seville and Madrid, as well as in Andalucian towns but dresses are also available in larger department stores and tourist areas.

4. Local wine from Spain

Spain is one of the world’s top wine producers, and it’s known for its multiple wine regions. Each region offers different grape varieties and winemaking traditions. Some of the most famous wine regions include Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Priorat. Also, Spain is known for its fortified wines like sherry and the sweet wine ‘Pedro Ximénez’.

Local wine is one of the best souvenirs in Spain to take home

Each wine region in Spain has its own speciality. For example, Rioja (which I’m sure we’ve all heard of and perhaps even drank a lot of) is renowned for its oak-aged red wines, while Jerez is famous for its sherry production.

Not only is it wonderful to be drinking some of the world’s finest wine in the country that produces it whilst you’re there, but there’s no need for that to end as you can buy some to take home as a gift to your loved ones (and yourself). Rioja, bought from source, is easily one of the best souvenirs from Spain.

5. Spanish ham (jamon)

Spanish ham, especially Jamón Ibérico, is considered a delicacy. It’s made from acorn-fed Iberian pigs and aged for several years It’s a highly sought-after dry-cured culinary treat in Spain and makes for an excellent, albeit delicate, souvenir.

Spanish ham is one of the top food souvenirs from Spain

There are different varieties of Jamón Ibérico, which are categorised based on the pig’s diet, lifestyle, and ageing process. Jamón Ibérico de Bellota is considered the finest and most luxurious variety. The pigs are fed a diet of acorns, or bellota as they are known hence the name, which gives the ham a distinct, nutty flavour. These pigs also roam freely in oak forests, which contributes to the ham’s unique taste. It has a creamy texture, with marbled fat that melts in your mouth.

The fat content might not be great for your diet but it adds to its lusciousness! It also pairs well with other Spanish delicacies like Manchego cheese and olives.

It’s wise to check customs regulations and restrictions for importing food products, as there may be limitations on the quantity you can bring back. I wouldn’t want you getting arrested for ham of all things. The best souvenirs from Spain are little luxury items which can keep the tastes of your holiday going long after you’ve got back and this achieves exactly that.

6. Pottery and antiques from Spain

Spanish pottery is characterised by its joyous, swirling, colourful designs. You can find plates, bowls, mugs, and platters for everyday use, as well as decorative items like vases, tiles, and figurines that add a touch of Spanish culture to your home. Talavera pottery from Toledo is particularly well-respected and has made a name for itself for its beauty and excellency so adding that extra touch of class would really make for one of the best souvenirs from Spain.

Spain has a long tradition of ceramic and pottery production dating back to Roman times. The Moors, who ruled parts of Spain, greatly influenced the art form, and Spanish pottery makers have continued to evolve and create their own distinctive pieces.

antiques from Barcelona are great souvenirs from Spain

You could also browse Spain’s many antique stores to find unusual gift ideas (see above). They’re like treasure troves of historic Spain. You may have to sift through lots of random things but it can be well worth it to find that perfect, unique Spanish souvenir.

7. Leather bags, belts or wallets

Spanish leather products are known for their quality and craftsmanship. You can find leather goods like handbags, wallets, belts, and even shoes in a wide range of styles and colours.

leather goods from Spain

Spanish leather products are highly regarded for their quality and craftsmanship because the country has a long history of working with leather and has developed exceptional skills in tanning and crafting leather goods.

You can pick up Spanish leather goods in a variety of places, including specialised leather shops, department stores, and local markets. Major cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville have renowned leather districts where you can explore a wide selection of leather items.

8. Saffron (azafrán)

Saffron is a crucial ingredient in Spanish cuisine, especially in dishes like paella. It is often referred to as “red gold” because of its high value due to how painstaking it is to harvest.

You only need a handful of it to flavour food, which is lucky as it can be quite expensive. But this makes it an easy souvenir from Spain to take back with you.

Saffron found in palella is a typical Spanish souvenir

Spanish saffron is primarily produced in the La Mancha region, particularly in the province of Albacete so look for any seal with this name on to be sure of getting one of the very best souvenirs from Spain.

Spanish saffron is often packaged in beautifully presented containers, such as glass vials or decorative tins. The beautiful packaging makes it an ideal souvenir or gift, and it’s also a testament to the quality of the saffron.

9. Spanish handmade jewellery

Traditional Spanish jewellery often features motifs inspired by the country’s history, culture, and regional influences, making it a meaningful souvenir.

Spain’s history includes Moorish influence, which is often reflected in jewellery designs with geometric patterns, filigree work, and Arabic calligraphy and can be crafted from a wide range of materials, including silver, gold, gemstones, pearls, and semi-precious stones. Gifts from Spain – What to Buy & Where to Shop

Thinking about gift ideas for friends or family? Working as travel planners on the ground in Spain since the year 2000, here at  Totally Spain , we get asked by clients what gifts from Spain to buy. We’ve already produced a guide to shopping in Spain (with the all-important store opening hours) so today, here are a few of our favourite ideas for gifts from Spain…

The Best Gifts from Spain

1 FOOD FROM SPAIN – THE CLASSIC GIFT

Don’t forget to order a ham stand and the sharp carving knife when ordering your tasty ‘jamon’! Pic credit: Brindisa

Hungry? The ultimate gift from Spain is a leg of Spanish jamon with a jamon stand and a decent set of carving knives. In Spain, you can pick them up at any good food deli or market but it’s a bit trickier if you need to order it from outside Spain or the EU.

Another classic is the Spanish paella – and everybody knows that it takes a good paella pan and proper Spanish rice to make an excellent paella and there are lots of companies abroad that can deliver great paella kits online.

We are fans of Brindisa in London which has been championing Spanish food for 30 years. Not only will you find paella kits and legs of jamon but you’ll also find cheeses and all your favourite store cupboard staples too. Plus lots of hampers – including a vegetarian one – which is a brilliant idea. Inquisitive carnivores might be interested to know that Brindisa runs a Spanish ham school  which is another gift idea if you happen to be near London!

What about a paella kit with the key ingredients and the all important paella pan! It’s the gift that keeps on giving! Pic credit: Brindisa

In the US and Canada, you’ll find a number of companies that distribute Spanish food items including jamon, paella pans, paella kits. We notice that LaTienda.com is even stocking the Jose Andres line of Spanish edibles including olive oils, olives, pisto, piquillo peppers and delicacies such as squid in ink, cockles and lots more.

If you’re able to do your gift shopping in Spain, we always recommend going to the food markets to pick up your gifts – as we also suggest finding your local  La Chinata  store or supplier where you can order brilliant sauces and oil plus other goodies including delicious chocolate and a wonderful line of cosmetics also.  Here you can make up our own personalised hamper to send abroad.

2 WINES FROM SPAIN – PERFECT FOR EVERYDAY & SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS

Don Miguel by Comenge is one of our favourite wines (and wineries) from Ribera del Duero. Pic credit: Comenge.com

We visit some spectacular wineries every year – and no, we’re not suggesting you buy a winery – although that would be an amazing gift! But we do recommend selecting wines made by a winery that you’d like to visit. This year, we re-visited the highly acclaimed Ribera del Duero wine region. If you haven’t yet been, why not familiarise you and your loved ones with the taste of Ribera  – in advance of that visit!. We’ve written about visiting the region in detail  here and recommend reserving visits at wineries such as Protos, Portia, Pago de Carrovejas (all the Ps!) and  Comenge . We are big fans of the Don Miguel Reserva (pictured above) by Comenge in homage to Miguel Comenge, who inspired his son Jaime to begin his journey with wines back in 1999. Wouldn’t that make a great gift for a father or father-in-law? You can purchase online at the winery’s store  or contact the winery directly if outside the EU.

Let it flow, let it flow, let it flow! Wonderful wines from Spain including this tasty Roda from the Rioja DO. Photo credit: LexnGer via photopin cc

If you are keener on Rioja, you won’t fail to impress with a case of the well-known Vivanco ,   Contino  or  Ysios  from the Rioja Alavesa region and  Roda  in the La Rioja – which always find a place at our table for special occasions. For whites, we highly recommend tasting (and visiting)  Pazo de Senoranz ‘s  Albariño from the Rias Baixas in Galicia. As you’d expect, most of Spain’s winery websites have online stores, but if you are sending the gift outside Spain and especially if outside the EU, you may find it easier to purchase from a wine distributor near you  – so remember the names and have them make up a custom selection for you.

If you’d like to know more about Spain’s winery regions, start with out guides to Ribera del Duero , Jerez , the  Rias Baixas , Rioja Alavesa and Rioja winery regions.  And check our posts on wineries with art  and the best wineries to visit in Spain  too!

3 BOOKS FROM SPAIN – A GIFT THAT OFFERS INSIGHT

Books are not only a great gift but they also pack and travel well too – which is great for people who aren’t there to open the door for the mailman. Here are a few books going into our Christmas stocking this year!

‘The New Vignerons’ by Luis Gutiérrez – described by Robert Parker as “a refreshing voice”. Pic credit: Estanis Núñez

If you enjoy learning about people working in the wine business (and their wines), Spanish author and wine critic for The Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez has just written ‘The New Vignerons’ which features stories of fourteen Spanish winemakers. Robert Parker has written the book’s foreword, saying it “offers a refreshing voice and a purist’s detailed look at some of the most complicated and compelling wines in the world…a fabulous contribution to the literature of fine wine.” Published by Editorial Planeta, the English version is out in December.

Matt Goulding’s book is prefaced with a foreword by Anthony Bourdain! Pic credit: Hardie Grant Publishing

Foodies will enjoy Matt Goulding’s ‘Grape, Olive, Pig’ – a new food travel guide that came out earlier this year. You may be familiar with Goulding who co-authored the New York Times bestselling series Eat This, Not That! Today, he divides his time between Barcelona and the US. We love his blogposts on Spain for Roads & Kingdoms and recommend this new  offering , published by Hardie Grant, for anybody interested in scratching beneath the surface of Spain’s food culture.

Giles Tremlett tells us the story of Isabella of Castile (1451-1504). Pic credit: Bloomsbury

History buffs looking for gifts from Spain should check out ‘Isabella of Castile’, the latest book by journalist and writer Giles Tremlett who has lived in and written about Spain for over 20 years. Tremlett tells the story of Isabel of Castile who ascended to the throne aged 23 in 1474 and reigned until her death in 1504 – and governed during a period of significant change. The Times has given it a thumbs-up, adding that it’s “packed with vivid character sketches and lyrical description…Tremlett has told a gripping story, full of beauty and darkness”. Published by Bloomsbury .

Looking for other ideas? If you’re in the market for something vintage, why not look out for the first edition of something like ‘ For Whom the Bells Tolls ‘ by Ernest Hemingway? You can pick up a copy online for less than $50 dollars and if you are willing to paying a few hundred more, you’ll get a copy from the first run in 1940. Or perhaps you want something modern? Does your loved one read some Spanish? Why not give a magazine subscription – we often recommend the Spanish version of the architectural design magazine AD  which is easy to flick through and can be enjoyed online with a digital subscription.

4 CLOTHES & SHOES FROM SPAIN – FOR THAT SPECIAL SOMEONE

When it comes to clothing from Spain, you already know all the obvious high street names. If you want to go a bit more high-end, check out Loewe which is great for leatherwear, accessories and even clothing for both men and women.

Brand new or vintage chic? It requires a bit of legwork but you can find pieces by the iconic designers such as Balenciaga if you do some online research. photo credit: Merlijn Hoek Balenciaga Museum // Trip to Spain – Getaria via photopin (license)

You can also go down the vintage route and purchase a dress or handbag designed by one of the icons of Spanish design such as  Balenciaga . If you’re looking for something unusual, have a look at Capas Sesena – a store in Madrid that has been producing original capes since 1901 and sells its wares online also.

Classic and contemporary capes from Spain, since 1901. Pic credit: Capas Sesena.

If it’s teenagers you are seeking to please – perhaps an online voucher for some of the many Spanish high street clothing brands such as Zara, Mango and Stradivarius , Berksha  and  Pull and Bear . And what about taking them out for tapas and handing over the voucher (or emailing it to them at the end of the meal)?

Jewellery is tricky to purchase for others and is sometimes problematic to ship but it is a wonderfully personal gift. We recommend Helena Rohner ’s work  – Helen is based in Madrid but you’ll find her pieces are also for sale in Paul Smith’s stores in London and New York. If you are looking for something a little more accessible price-wise, check out Barcelona-based Joi d’Art  and Madrid’s Uno de 50 .

Shoes also make a perfect gift and we’ve written lots about great  Spanish footwear  including brands such as Rebeca Sanver, Pons Quintana, Vialis and Castaner. You’ll find more ideas here on  clothing in Spain  too.

5 CULTURE & DESIGN FROM SPAIN – THOUGHTFUL & BENEVOLENT GIFTS

Would your loved one appreciate becoming a friend of one of Spain’s amazing museums and art centres? Pic credit: Enrico Cano/Centro Botin

If you’re shopping for the person who has everything, we recommend sponsoring a museum in Spain such as the iconic Prado in Madrid. (Here’s the link to sign up a friend – and US citizens can do that here .) The  Hispanic Society is another interesting option for US residents. The Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid also welcomes new friends, patrons and benefactors  (and for Malaga here is the link ). The Guggenheim in Bilbao also accepts international members, as do the Dali Museums  – and the newest art centre in Spain (pictured above) is Centro Botin in Santander which also runs a friends programme . And remember, Spanish museums often have great gift stores. Take for example these replica  doorknobs  originally designed for Gaudi’s Casa Mila that are on sale on the museum’s website – what a great gift for somebody who has been to Barcelona or is planning a trip there soon!.

Looking for something with a bit of humour?  Etsy is always a good place for quirky ‘Spanish’ themed gift ideas. Items change all the time but we’re sure you’ll find something interesting for that special somebody. If Etsy doesn’t offer you anything, what about this  Santatipo project in Santander where you can download  (for free!) some great samples of old store front lettering from the city? We think it’s a great gift for anybody interested in type-setting, history or travel. All you need to do is to print out the poster on good quality paper (e-mail it to a decent printer)– stick it in a frame – and hey presto – a great gift with a lot of heart (and art).

If you want to explore contemporary Spanish designers, designer and architect  Patricia Urquiola  has produced many homeware, furnishing and furniture lines for brands such as Kartell, Gandia Blasco, Louis Vuitton and Rosenthal. And Javier Masical’s brilliant gift store  offers all his t-shirts, books, posters and lots more including an online portrait service.

6 SPENDING TIME TOGETHER  – THE ULTIMATE GIFT

Want to spend some time with your favourite person in the world? Bring them to Spain – and enjoy iconic views like this, of the Generalife and the Alhambra complex in Granada. Pic credit. Parador.es

Thinking about giving the person (or people) you love the present of the trip of a lifetime? If so, we’d love to hear from you. All you need to do is to set us a budget and we can create the perfect itinerary in Spain and Portugal including visits to popular destinations such as the Alhambra and Granada and also to brand-new destinations you may not know about – for example to Gaudi’s Casa Vicens – which has just opened to the public. 14 Best Souvenirs from Spain

Spanish sherry.

By Martina from PlacesofJuma

A really tasty souvenir of Spain, especially for people who love to have a drink, is a bottle of original sherry! In general, wine is made all over Spain, but nothing is more special than de Vino de Jerez, known as Sherry in English.

Sherry is made from the grapes of the ancient white grape variety and the original comes from the city of Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz province). However, this special wine does not simply taste like wine, in fact, it already belongs to the group of sweet liqueurs! For the production only 3 grape varieties are allowed: PALOMINO, PEDRO XIMENEZ, and MOSCATEL.

Although this drink actually comes from southern Andalusia, you can find it in any supermarket in Spain, and if you don’t have time, you will surely find a bottle of this noble drop at the airport. Also nice looking are the typical sherry glasses, which makes for lovely Spanish gifts to take back home too.

Saffron – Spain Food Souvenirs

By Sam from My Flying Leap

Spain is a foodies’ paradise. You’ll find a range of delicious delectables from small-sized sharing plates called tapas to heaping pots of paella made for sharing.

Tapas may be bite-sized treats but they are packed full of flavour. And paella is an incredible rice dish with a flavour you’ll never forget. You’ll find it everywhere, though Seville has a reputation for some of the best food in Spain.

The secret ingredient in many of these special Spanish dishes is saffron. It’s harvested from a flower (“saffron crocus”). They have an unforgettable fragrance and colour foods a brilliant gold.

Saffron is expensive as it’s not easy to harvest—it takes over 50,000 flowers to yield a pound of saffron. And it must be harvested by hand on the day the flower blooms. It’s only grown in a few areas of the world so it’s very special.

Saffron makes for a great souvenir as a little bit goes a long way, so it’s easy to pack. You can purchase it anywhere, though the best is from La Mancha. It should smell sweet and be a deep, rich red colour. Bring home some saffron from your trip to Spain, and it’ll be sure to make any dish worth remembering.

Tarta de Santiago

By Milijana of World Travel Connector

Fabulous Tarta de Santiago, is the world-renowned Spanish almond cake and one of the most delicious traditional Spanish desserts .

Sweet Tarta de Santiago, or literally Cake of St. James, originates from Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. The Cathedral of St James in Santiago is the burial place of St James the Apostle and as such, it is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage places in the world. Furthermore, St James is the saint patron of Spain.

But not less important, Tarta de Santiago, also known as Tarta de almendras, is known as one of the most delicious almond cakes in the world. The cake is made with eggs, sugar, and almonds, and flavoured with sweet wine or brandy and a bit of lemon rind. The traditionally round-shaped Tarta de Santiago is always covered with powdered sugar and with the distinctive imprint of the famous St James cross.

Today this fantastic Spanish almond cake is savoured and sold in pastry shops throughout Spain, not only in Galicia. To make a long story short, traditional Tarta de almendras is one of the sweetest souvenirs from Spain to take back home!

Spanish Recipe Book

By Shannon from Traveling Teacher Girl

One of the best parts of travelling to Spain is eating all of the delicious food- Paella, Tortilla de Patatas, Pan con Tomate- the list goes on!

The best way to take a piece of delicious Spanish cuisine back with you after a trip to Spain is with a Spanish recipe book. Recipe books are a great Spanish souvenir- they are useful, easy to store at home, and do not take up too much space in luggage. In addition, since smell and taste are connected with memories- cooking your favourite dishes from Spain is a great way to relive your favourite travel memories.

It is the gift that keeps on giving since you can share these recipes by cooking for your friends and family (or, get the recipe book as a souvenir for a friend in hope that they might cook for you!). Recipe books are often available at gift shops or at book stores in most major cities in Spain.

Tortas Locas (Crazy Cakes) from Malaga

By Cristina from My Little World Of Travelling

If you are visiting Malaga , you will find plenty of Spain souvenirs, especially for food lovers. You can buy just about anything from local wine to cakes and sweets.

Tortas locas (crazy cakes), also known as locas, are two rounded pastries filled with custard and topped with orange frosting and a cherry. These sweet treats are delicious.

The history of this sweet dates to the fifties. Before they were created, all the sweets were quite dry and plain, therefore, these attractive and creamy pastries became very popular in a short period of time. Locas was also considered a hunger-killer in the post-war period, but the reality is that only wealthy people could afford them.

The name “loca” came up because of the song “A lo loco se vive mejor” (translated as Life is better acting crazy), and there are many stories about this sweet.

Nowadays, they aren’t expensive anymore, and you can find them in any bakery or big supermarket, however, if you want to get the best locas, you must buy them from Tejeros.

Spanish Hand Fans – Spanish Souvenirs

By James from Travel Collecting

Hand fans are one of the most popular souvenirs in Spain. Originally brought to Spain from North Africa in the 14th century, they became extremely popular as a way of helping women beat the Spanish summer heat.  They also became an important part of traditional fashion and helped women preserve a sense of mystery and privacy, as they could hide their faces behind them. They have since become an important part of traditional dance such as flamenco.

Hand fans range from plain fabrics stretched over simple wood, to much more elaborate versions with lace trim and painted motifs.  No matter what type you buy, they make a beautiful, colourful, and easy-to-carry souvenir of your trip to Spain.

Fans are readily available in tourist shops throughout Spain and many souvenir peddlers sell them on the streets of Madrid and Barcelona.  Quality – and prices – can vary considerably, so be sure you are paying an appropriate price for the level of detail and craftsmanship of your fan.

Back home, you can use them, display them on a sideboard, or even use them as place settings at a wedding, as I did.

Tempranillo Wine

By Talek from Travels with Talek

Spain is a major wine producer as everyone knows. Among the large variety of wines the country produces is Tempranillo, made from a black grape for full-bodied red wine.

The name “Tempranillo” is a play on the Spanish word Temprano or early because the grapes mature earlier than most.

The wine has been produced in Spain since the time of the Phoenicians about 3,000 years ago and is frequently referred to as Spain’s noble wine. The wine features notes of cherry, figs, cedar and tobacco.

Tempranillo is not a “light” wine and pairs best with hearty dishes like red meats, smoked pork, sausages and pasta but is versatile enough to accompany hearty Mexican or Greek dishes.

If you like wine and are looking for a no-nonsense, competitively priced, versatile and delicious wine, you can’t go wrong with a Tempranillo. It is one of the best souvenirs from Spain you can bring home and continue to love back home.

Spanish Ceramics – What to Buy in Spain

By Dhara from It’s Not About the Miles

If you are planning a visit to Spain, and enjoy bringing back mementoes from your trips, you will want to check out ceramics from Spain as the perfect keepsake to remember your travels by.

On our visit to Andalusia, we saw beautiful ceramics in Seville and other cities. The Triana quarter, across the Guadalquivir River from the Seville city centre, has been a centre of ceramics production for many centuries and visiting Triana to browse ceramics is one of the best things to do in Seville .

Azulejos, or decorative tiles, are especially worth considering since the region has a long history of creating tiles with beautiful and intricate artwork. Plates that can be hung on walls are another gorgeous option.

In Seville, you can buy ceramics in Triana, or in the city centre if you are short on time. Most cities and towns in Spain carry ceramics, so you should have no difficulty finding them anywhere you travel in the country.

Churro Chocolate Mix

By Carley from Home to Havana

Perhaps Spain’s most famous sweet treat, churros con chocolate – churros with hot chocolate – can be an unforgettable dish from Spain for many travellers. By bringing home handmade chocolate or hot chocolate powder for this unique dish, you’ll be well on your way to recreating this treat at home. The perfect souvenir from a self-guided tour sampling the best churros in Barcelona , Madrid, or, any other destination on your journey, will help you recreate your travel experience in Spain once at home again.

Many of Spain’s most famous churros con chocolate destinations sell powdered mix to recreate this drink – check out Petritxol Xocoa on the famous chocolate street Carrer de Petritxol in Barcelona for one of the best hot chocolate mixes you can take home from the city.

Those that sample churros con chocolate in Spain will know how unique the hot chocolate is in this traditional Spanish dish – often more bitter than visitors are expecting, and thick, almost like a chocolate pudding, so it’s unlikely you’ll find a similar mix outside of Spain. Don’t miss your opportunity to recreate this famous Spanish dish with this inexpensive and easily packable souvenir of Spain!

Vinegar from Jerez

By Joanna from The World in my Pocket

If you want to buy an authentic souvenir from Spain that will make you remember the trip for a long time, consider getting a bottle of Jerez vinegar. The Jerez vinegar is also known under the name of sherry vinegar because it is made from sherry.

Same as the sherry, the Jerez vinegar can only be produced in the area between Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa Maria, in the province of Cadiz. You can buy a bottle of sherry vinegar on your visit to Jerez de la Frontera but also from any major supermarket or gourmet food shop from other cities.

What makes the Jerez vinegar special is the acidity, which is at least 7%, making it extremely flavoursome. You can use the Jerez vinegar to make cold soups such as gazpacho or salmorejo, in stews or sauces, but also on its own as a salad dressing too.

Spanish Tapas Dishes

By Shireen at The Happy Days Travels

One of the best souvenirs you can get from Spain would be a set of tapas dishes. I have visited Spain over 10 times and every trip involves an evening or afternoon of enjoying tapas food in that area.

Tapas is known as small dishes that are sometimes eaten as a snack but it’s getting more popular in the UK to eat a few tapas dishes as a main meal and it’s something I always look for when dining out and definitely when visiting Spain. Popular options include seafood, Padron peppers, olives, cheese and bread, patatas bravas or cured meats.

Spanish food is an experience in itself and tapas sits at the top of Spanish cuisine and culture particularly in popular San Sebastian or Andalucia where it originated. This is why purchasing some tapas dishes as a souvenir in Spain is perfect so you can create your own tapas meals at home, drawing on your own time in the country!

Paella Pan – Food Souvenirs of Spain

By Claire from This Food Lover

Paella is a quintessential Spanish dish and one that you simply must try while you are in Spain.  Once you’ve fallen in love with the delicious flavours and textures of paella you will want to make it at home, so how about a paella cooking class to learn how, before buying your own paella pan as a Spanish souvenir?

Paella is made in a large shallow carbon steel pan that was traditionally called “una paella”, and that gives the rice dish its name. The term “paellera” is also used to describe the pan, to avoid any confusion.

The shallow paella pan cooks the rice evenly, without having to stir the ingredients. As it cooks, it also leaves a crust on the bottom of the pan – which many people say is the best bit of the paella!

You can buy a paella pan in most large Spanish supermarkets and cookware shops, as many people cook paellas at home – it isn’t just a dish for tourists! The key is to buy the right size for what you want, that is how many people you want to cook for, as they vary in size from being suitable for 2 people to large enough to feed a big family.

Spanish Olive Oil

By Ania from The Travelling Twins

When you think of souvenirs or mementoes, the first things to pop into your head are likely magnets and other trinkets. But while these are great choices, they can be seen as kitschy and overpriced. Instead of looking for something useless, look for something that you’ll use.

One of the most popular souvenirs from Spain is oil olive. Although you can find oil olive around the world, oil olive from Spain is reputedly some of the best oil in the world. You may be wondering what makes oil from Spain so great or why olive oil would even make a good Spanish souvenir to take back with you on your trip.

One of the facts about Spain is that the country is the biggest olive oil producer. In addition, oil from Spain is high-quality, they even have a competition to recognize the Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil in Spain.

Plus Spanish olive oil is the most awarded in the world, most flavoursome olive oil.

So, when looking for things to bring back from your next trip to Spain, consider olive oil as an option. It’s flavourful, it’ll last a long time and it can be used in your favourite meals back home and remind you of your holiday in Spain for a long time to come.

Spanish Jewellery

By Victoria from Guide Your Travel

Spain is a great country for shopping especially when it comes to jewellery. There are lots of different styles to choose from including both traditional options and more modern things. Silver is especially popular and not all too expensive.

You can usually find options for necklaces, earrings, or rings for less than 30€ with really high-quality options. Check out little jewellery shops around the centre of town and lively areas which tends to be the best place to shop. In large cities like Madrid, you can also find markets such as the famous El Rastro which is a weekly flea market that always attracts lots of jewellery vendors offering different styles.

If you like something a little bit more unconventional you can also shop for traditional Spanish styles such as the popular damascene jewellery which is usually a bit more expensive. Just make sure to only buy from verified vendors and trustworthy sources if you’re choosing something a bit more expensive.

21 Traditional Barcelona Souvenirs & Where To Buy Them

Please note that some of the links may be affiliate links , and at no additional cost to you, I earn a small commission if you make a purchase. I recommend only products & companies I love and use, and the income goes back into making this little blog successful!

Wondering what type of Barcelona souvenirs to bring home from your trip? Something authentic but practical, a little gift that brings back memories of your trip? Something that doesn’t break the bank? Well, hold on to your pantalones (pants in Spanish)… 🥸

My travel buddy Audra from Passports and Photographs has been to Barcelona more than a few times and has a passion for hunting down unique little souvenirs that make for great gifts. So this is her inside scoop on what to get that doesn’t suck or end up in the trash later, where to find traditional Barcelona gifts , and a few tips on how to make sure you’re not being swindled while shopping for souvenirs in Barcelona. Let’s dive in!

Barcelona Souvenirs are all over the place.

Forget the standard t-shirt or coffee mug. We’re going to explore all of the best and most authentic Barcelona souvenirs you can buy. My name is Audra, and I love me a good souvenir, especially from one of our favorite cities in Europe, Barcelona.

Here are my top picks, and I’ve chosen them because they are truly authentic Barcelona souvenirs, unique to the Catalan culture, wit, and way of life.

✅ Catalan Food – From cava to chocolate, walk through La Rambla Market, aka Sant Josep Market, aka La Boqueria , and take home as much as you can. Check the TSA requirements , but I’m sure you can check at least 2 bottles with no problem. Maybe skip the dairy products.

✅ Caganer Figurine (💩) – You probably haven’t heard of this before, but you’ll see them! It’s the most unique and authentic Barcelona souvenir – a mini pooping figurine. Why is this even a thing? I’ll explain later…🙈

✅ Anything Gaudi Art Inspired – The city of Barcelona would not feel the same without the architectural masterpieces of Antoni Gaudi, such as the Sagrada Família and Park Güell. A great Barcelona souvenir is anything representing his colorful mosaic work – I have a Gaudi tea mug at home!

✅ Barcelona Street Art – Street art always makes an excellent souvenir whether it’s a painting, a little sculpture, or a small print. I bought a few Barcelona cityscape prints from a street artist that I’ve framed and now make up a gallery wall in my bedroom!

Now let’s jump into the full list for your inspiration and education on what the heck some of these things are, and why they make for a fantastic souvenir from Barcelona.

Barcelona Souvenirs: Unique & Authentic

My husband and I have built a bookshelf at home to show off all of the treasures we bring back from our travels. Our bookshelf brings me great joy when I look at it, because it reminds me of all the amazing places we’ve been over the years. But there’s always room for more memories (and more souvenirs). Here are a few of our favorite souvenirs from Barcelona, in no particular order .

1. Anything Gaud í

Barcelona was home to Antoni Gaudi, the architect who is responsible for some of Barcelona’s most famous sites such as La Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell. These are probably on your list of things to see in Barcelona , so you can grab a little gift while you’re there!

This little guy is an art piece from Parc Guell.

Gaudi was known to use colorful mosaics in his designs and you can find all sorts of Gaudi souvenirs in his style. From mosaic lizard figurines, ceramic tiles and plates that I particularly love because they’re useful around the house, or even miniature replicas of Sagrada Familia and Park Guell.

I proudly sip coffee from a mug shaped like the Sagrada Familia, and I’ve purchased a Gaudi-themed puzzle for the family that may or may have not taken longer to put together than it has to build the church itself.

2. A Caganer Figurine 💩

So this souvenir will be the most unique item on my list, possibly on ANY souvenir list. A Caganer Figurine is very popular in Barcelona, and a tradition for Christmas. These figurines depict a person defecating. Yes, you read that right! The word “caganer” translates to “the crapper” or “the sh*tter”.

This is a classic pooping figurine souvenir from Barcelona.

It’s a quiky Catalonia tradition that has been around for centuries. The pooping guy symbolizes fertility, prosperity, and good luck. The act of 💩 is supposed to be a symbol of fertilization of the earth. These figures are made of clay and the designs now include famous people such as sports figures, actors, and politicians. Nothing says ‘Tis the Season like a Caganer Figurine!

3. A Bota Bag

If you’ve never heard of this before, you’re not alone. A Bota Bag is a traditional Spanish leather drinking bag made from goatskin. Sounds pretty weird, huh? These bags have been in use in Spain for centuries to carry and store liquid. Before HydroFlask, there was Bota Bag.

This is a bota bag, a more traditional Barcelona souvenir.

They’re used to carry water or wine (liking it a little more now) and are generally used for outdoor activities such as hiking or camping, but choose your own adventure. Thinking outside the box here, maybe concerts or floating down a river.

How I Use It: If you don’t think you could ever bring yourself to drink from it, then you could just hang it on the wall as a decorative piece of art.

4. FC Barcelona Jersey

If you’re a soccer fan, then a Barcelona FC jersey is exactly what you need to level up! Head over to the official Barça Merchandising Shop to pick up a jersey, hat, scarf, kid games, and more. They don’t ship everything, so make sure you head into a local store while in Barcelona. Don’t worry about fashion faux pas – strut the streets like you just scored the winning goal.

Futbol Fan Warning: Wearing a Barça jersey might lead to spontaneous chants of “Barca! Barca!” from fellow fans.

5. Espardenyes Shoes

Espardenyes, also known as espadrilles, are traditional Spanish shoes that are very popular to wear in the summer. These shoes have a distinctive design: the upper part of the shoe is made of a canvas or cotton fabric which allows it to breathe while the sole is made from natural jute or other plant fibers – sort of like TOMS. Your feet will stay cool even if the rest of you is in the middle of a summer heat meltdown!

Espadrilles are great souvenirs from Barcelona.

Espardenyes are super comfy and symbolize the laid-back Mediterranean style. They’re also quite practical – you can wear them with a dress, at the beach, and I’ve even seen guys on the streets of Barcelona dress down a casual suit with some Espardenyes. Oh yea, and they’re unisex!

6. Catalan Flag

Spain might have an official flag but if you want to show how much you love Barcelona, snag a Catalan flag as a souvenir. As a proud owner of a VIP ticket to the ultimate Barcelona fan club, you can drape yourself in the Catalonia colors while you wait for your café con leche to kick in.

This, I will admit, is the ultimate die-hard Barcelona souvenir, because it’s just not that practical – but who am I to judge?!

7. Flamenco Fan

Flamenco is a deep-rooted and iconic style of dance from the south of Spain , and the flamenco fan is an integral tool of expression (and cooling) used by the dancers. These handheld fans are adorned with intricate designs and are a beautiful representation of Spanish culture.

Flamenco fans are such a fun gift from Barcelona.

I have a couple of super unique Flamenco fans on my bookshelf of souvenirs , some from Barcelona, others from Malaga , Sevilla, and the Andalucian region of Spain. And since you’re in this hot ass country, you have an amazing portable breeze generator you can break out anytime you need it.

8. Barcelona Street Art

Buying local art and street art in Barcelona is like adopting a piece of the city’s spirit. I didn’t used to consider this a souvenir, but as soon as I saw some of the paintings and prints in Plaza Cataluña and La Rambla, even in the little shops in El Born neighborhood, I quickly changed my mind.

Now I have two handmade leather purses, an embroidered necklace made out of upcycled materials, three Barcelona cityscape prints, and a journal with my name embossed in the leather and the date I got it in Barcelona. Remember, art is subjective so trust your instincts and up your décor game from a local artist.

Barcelona Souvenirs: Food

My best advice is this – turn your suitcase into a snack sanctuary . Food souvenirs are like little edible postcards and the best part is they won’t sit on your shelf gathering dust.

PRO TIP: You can pack food in your carry-on and checked bag, just review the TSA restrictions . Off the bat, wine, champagne, and cheeses are allowed, you just have to pay attention to the quantities and the packaging.

You cannot leave Barcelona without bringing home a bottle of cava. Cava is a sparkling wine from the Catalonia region of Spain. It’s similar to Champagne but has its own distinct flavor, and is made from Spanish grapes. The flavor profile is that of crisp fruity tastes, with hints of citrus, green apple, and flowers.

TSA says you can bring up to 5 Liters per passenger, and if that’s not an invitation to buy local booze, I don’t know what is!

10. Jamón Iberico

When you visit Barcelona you will for sure see these giant legs of ham hanging in shop windows. The Iberian ham has been a part of Spanish cuisine for centuries and the slow process of curing the ham has been passed down for generations.

Iberian ham is on of the best souvenirs you can get in Barcelona.

Jamon Iberico (Iberian ham) is usually served during parties and is always part of a tapa menu. Buying Iberian ham is like choosing a life partner – there are plenty of jamóns in the sea and, each one has its own unique charm. I’m getting existential about cured meats.

Get ready to say QUESO! Spain has a rich tradition of cheese-making and you can find a diverse selection of cheeses in Barcelona. Go on a shopping spree for cheese in La Boqueria as you ponder the biggest decision of your life: does this one go with red or white wine?

12. Turrón Candy

Turrón is a sweet nougat candy made from almonds, honey, sugar, and egg whites. It’s pretty much the rockstar of Spanish sweets that makes all regular nougats bow down.

These are typical Spanish sweets with nuts.

There are two main types of Turrón: Hard ( Turrón Duro ) and Soft ( Turrón Blando ). Turron Duro has a firm crunchy texture while Turron Blando is smooth and creamy. Both come in a bunch of different flavors such as cinnamon and citrus and are sometimes made with chocolate. This will definitely put a pep in your step – and give you a sugar high!

13. Cacao Sampaka

If you’re not a fan of nougats, maybe your taste buds will prefer something a little more fancy, like a Cacao Sampaka. Think Willy Wonka but with fewer Oompa-Loompas. Cacao Sampaka is a Barcelona-based chocolate company and their chocolates are so fancy, that they have their own red carpet events.

You can find these chocolates infused with flavors such as coffee, fruits, and spices. It’s a true chocolate experience that might have you wondering if it’s socially acceptable to take it as your plus one to a party.

Did you know that Barcelona has a chocolate museum? If you love chocolate then you definitely should head over to MX Museu de la Xocolata and learn about how chocolate is grown, how it came to Europe, and see all the amazing chocolate sculptures.

14. Olive Oil

The Catalonia region of Spain produces its own olive oil and this is one souvenir that won’t disappear as fast as those chocolates. Spain produces various types of olive oil, but you can find the local variety in Barcelona markets and specialty shops. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the highest quality and a true authentic Barcelona Spain souvenir. Your taste buds will be doing the flamenco in gratitude!

Barcelona Souvenirs: Cheap

If you’re on a strict budget and have to navigate the souvenir shops like a secret agent armed with a list of must-haves that won’t break the bank, then this list is for you. Remember – it’s not about the price tag, it’s about the memories.

15.  Postcards

Postcards are cheap and so easy to take back home and have the magic of turning every traveler into a storyteller. I always grab at least one postcard that shows off the major sites to visit in the area as well as a postcard specific to a place we visit.

Here are a few ideas for what you can do with your postcards:

  • Put them up on your fridge or a big corkboard in your office.
  • Create a travel journal with your postcard. On one side of the page is your postcard, on the other side is a write-up about your experiences there.
  • Do what I do: I write on the back of a postcard about my day while there – what I saw, where and what we ate, and anything that happened. Then I put them in a box, take them out, and reminisce about our trip whenever I want. Sometimes I even hang them up!

So scour the postcard stand and select the perfect one that makes your vacation seem way more saturated than it actually is – because let’s be real, only you will know the true colors of a place.

16.  Christmas Ornament s

Nearly every souvenir shop sells these tiny little things that turn your Christmas tree into a scrapbook of your global travels. They’re fairly inexpensive and an ornament is the perfect sentimental keepsake from Barcelona. Hang it on your Christmas tree every year to remind you of all the amazing places you’ve been. It’s a fun way to relive those moments that hold a special place in your heart.

My Christmas tree currently holds hundreds of dollars worth of ornaments from around the world, and a few Target globes, and it’s the most festive little tree in the neighborhood.

17.  Magnets

Magnets are a classic souvenir that is lightweight, easy to pack, and super affordable. It also serves a practical purpose whether on your fridge or a magnetic board, holding up all those Picassos your kids have painted. The hardest part will be trying to pick the perfect one so as to not compete with the artwork. 🤣

If all fails, magnets make for great souvenirs.

18. Barcelona Ceramic Tiles

A great Barcelona souvenir is traditional Spanish tiles, featuring colorful designs inspired by Gaudi’s mosaics. This is another one of my personal budget-friendly souvenirs. I have a collection from the many places I’ve visited and plan to make a side table with them for my patio one day. They are only about 3 inches in length and are easy to take back home.

Barcelona Souvenirs: Online (Amazon)

If you have a case of “souvenir amnesia” and forget to buy a souvenir, redemption is just a click away! Turn this souvenir faux pas into an online treasure hunt on Amazon. No shame in the online game!

19.  Barcelona Coasters

Coasters are always a win, and these Barcelona Map Coaster s are cute. Picture yourself hosting guests and subtly flaunting your navigational prowess as you casually mention how you can find Sagrada Familia blindfolded.

Plus, it’s also multifunctional. It’s not just a coaster; it’s a crisis-prevention device that protects surfaces from hot beverages.

20. Barcelona Tote Bag

A tote bag is a stylish carryall that’s more than just a bag; it’s a portable piece of Catalan flair! Get yourself an Amazon-delivered Gaudi-inspired tote bag that screams “why yes, I’ve been to the land of paella and flamenco.” It’s not only practical for the grocery store but it’s an eco-friendly alternative to plastic bags.

21.  Barcelona Inspired Phone Stuff

A Barcelona Phone Case is a sleek guardian of your device that’s also quite cute. Protect your phone while having a constant reminder of your trip to Barcelona. You can find them for iPhone and Android cell phones.

Best Places To Shop In Barcelona

I hope your credit card has no transaction fees because Barcelona is made for shopping. Here are the best places to shop and a few stores I like.

✅ Colmado Murra for wine, cheese, and cold cuts.

✅ La Manual Alpaga tera is an espadrilles shoe shop I like.

✅ Ringels is a souvenir shop that specializes in art, Spanish cuisine, and wines. All of their products are made in Spain and their store sits about 500m from the front side of Sagrada Familia.

✅ Artgaudi is great for Gaudí inspired stuff.

✅ Nuestras Tiendas has four locations in Barcelona. They sell books, maps, frames, tote bags, keychains, jewelry, and more. Everything they sell is crafted by local artisans so you will definitely get an authentic souvenir.

✅ Santa Eulalia is an old-school Catalunian haute couture boutique store – great for my ladies shopping for cute clothes from Barcelona.

How To Pick A Good Souvenir From Barcelona

Picking a good souvenir involves a blend of personal preference, cultural connection, and practical consideration. Here are a few guiding principles for picking the perfect Barcelona Souvenir, from me to you.

✔️Find a Personal Connection

What you bring home as your souvenir is very personal. Choose something that has meaning to you whether it’s a piece of art or a soccer jersey. It should remind you of a good experience.

✔️Go For Local and Authentic

Take your time in souvenir hunting and try to get something made locally that reflects the culture of Barcelona. Buying locally supports the local artisans and businesses, and that’s always nice.

✔️ Functional and Practical

Choose items that serve a purpose. Is what you’re buying useful? Will this souvenir stand the test of time? Try to buy something that is of good quality, and won’t fall apart a month after you get back home.

FAQ: Shopping for Souvenirs in Spain

Here are a few logistical questions that come up when shopping for a souvenir in Spain and Barcelona especially.

What is the most popular souvenir?

Barcelona’s top souvenirs are Cava, an FC Barcelona Jersey, and Park Guell Lizard figures. All of these can go in your check-on bag except maybe the Cava, which you will have to put in your checked bag or buy at the duty-free store after security.

Park Guel mosaic art.

What’s Barcelona famous for?

Barcelona is most famous for the architectural works of Antoni Gaudi which include his two most popular buildings: La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell. Beyond that, Barcelona is famous for its soccer team, paella, tapas, and sangria, and the funny way they speak Spanish with a lisp. There’s a reason the dialect is unique in this way, but that’s a story for another time.

What souvenirs are found in Spain?

Spain has everything, and Barcelona especially is a souvenir shopping haven. Some of the most popular souvenirs from Spain include:

  • Ceramics and Pottery , especially from regions like Andalusia and Valencia. Look for hand-painted tiles, vases, or plates with traditional designs.
  • Spanish Fan (Abanico) : They come in various designs, from simple wooden ones to elaborate, hand-painted ones.
  • Flamenco Music Stuff : Accessories like castanets can be a unique gift. For those passionate about dance and music, a Flamenco skirt or a shawl might be an idea.
  • Saffron and Spices : Spain is famous for its high-quality saffron, used in dishes like paella. Other spices, like smoked paprika, also make great gifts.
  • Wine and Olive Oil : Spain is one of the world’s top wine producers, with regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero offering fantastic varieties. Don’t forget the high-quality olive oil, because where there’s wine, there’s oil.
  • Jamón Iberico : A delicacy, appreciated by foodies worldwide. You can find beautifully packaged ham for easy transportation.
  • Fútbol Memorabilia : For fútbol (soccer) fans, jerseys from FC Barcelona or Real Madrid are great gifts.
  • Leather Goods : Spain produces excellent leather shoes, bags, and belts. Look for handmade items for a special touch.
  • Traditional Jewelry : Spanish jewelry, often featuring intricate designs and sometimes incorporating elements like Spanish gold and Toledo steel, can be a wonderful gift.
  • Espadrilles : Another item on our list, these comfy shoes are perfect for walking and exploring.

Flamenco fans are great Barcelona souvenirs.

Each of these items offers a taste of Spain’s rich culture and traditions, making them perfect souvenirs for friends and family, and a way to remember your own Spanish adventure.

Is it cheaper to buy things in Spain?

Things in Spain are generally cheaper than in the United States for example. Groceries and clothing are among some of the most affordable things in Spain, which a lot of our Barcelona souvenirs list is crafted around.

Final Thoughts: The Best Souvenir From Barcelona

Remember, the best souvenir is the one that brings back fond memories and gives you a connection to the destination you were at. My top picks of authentic Barcelona souvenirs are:

✅ Catalan Food – From cava to chocolate, walk through La Rambla Market, aka Sant Josep Market, aka La Boqueria and take home as much as you can.

✅ Anything Gaudi Art Inspired – The city of Barcelona would not feel the same without the architectural masterpieces of Antoni Gaudi, such as the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, and Casa Milà. A great Barcelona souvenir is anything representing his colorful mosaic work – I have a Gaudi tea mug at home!

✅ Barcelona Street Art – Street art always makes an excellent souvenir whether it’s a painting, a little sculpture, or a small print. It’s an authentic expression of the local culture with a bonus of supporting a local artist! I bought a few Barcelona cityscape prints from a street artist that I’ve framed and now make up a gallery wall in my bedroom!

Here's a picture of my souvenir bookshelf, some of which are from Barcelona.

Take your time looking for your souvenir and choose one that genuinely speaks to you and your travel experience. The perfect gift doesn’t exist, but it should hold sentimental value in the future and spark amazing memories of your time in Barcelona.

20 of the best things to do in Spain

From relaxing on beaches in the Canary Islands to wine tasting in La Rioja, here are Spain's top experiences © Imgorthand / Getty Images

From the snow-dusted, ski-worthy Pyrenees to the glinting golden beaches of the south, Spain unfolds in a series of ever-changing landscapes, traditions, attractions, cuisines and even languages.

Its vast natural spaces are a dream for those who love the great outdoors , while the cities, towns and villages fizz with energy, cultural jewels and mouth-watering gastronomy. But where to start? Whether you’re keen to get stuck into dazzling architecture, cycle to a secret beach or spend your days tasting wines, tapas or olive oils, here are 20 unmissable things to do in Spain.

1. Hike or ride to a secluded beach

Hitting the beach is a national hobby here, and you’ll inevitably fall in love with your own pocket of Spain’s 5470km-long (3400-mile) coastline. Leave the crowds behind by escaping to tranquil, hidden coves that can only be reached on foot, on a bike or on horseback. Head out hiking along Menorca ’s pine-shaded Camí de Cavalls (a restored 14th-century path) to reach turquoise coves; ramble between wild, pebble-studded bays along the Costa Brava; walk to remote sugar-white strands on Andalucía’s breezy Costa de la Luz (also great for kitesurfing); and find protected nudist beaches in Almería’s Parque Natural Cabo de Gata .

2. Taste Spain's best wines

From headlining grape-growing regions such as La Rioja and the cava-making Penedès to Andalucía’s unmatched Sherry Triangle, Spain’s 70 Denominaciones de Origen (Denominations of Origin) roll out a tantalizing line-up of wines. Many wineries here are now experimenting with unusual combinations, pushing forward sustainable production methods and working to recover rare ancestral grapes.

For the most exciting tours, seek out small, independent bodegas (some still run by their founding families) and track down lesser-known wine-making areas such as Galicia’s up-and-coming Ribeira Sacra, Catalonia’s cool Costers del Segre or the innovative El Hierro and Lanzarote DOs in the Canary Islands. Salud!

Planning tip: If you'd prefer to be the designated drinker rather than the driver, here are some  other ways to travel around in Spain .

People wandering through one of the galleries of a major art museum

3. Dive into art (and nightlife) in Madrid

Spain’s capital is one of Europe’s greatest cities for art lovers, with a clutch of prestigious galleries where you’ll meet such icons as Picasso’s Guernica ( Centro de Arte Reina Sofía ), Van Gogh’s Les Vessenots in Auvers ( Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza ), and Velázquez’s Las meninas and Goya’s Saturno devorando a su hijo ( Museo del Prado ). More hidden thrills range from sketches by poet Federico García Lorca to mysterious works by Antoni Tàpies. Pre-book tickets online and explore galleries first thing; some even offer "out of hours" tours before the doors officially open.

Planning tip: Save some energy, though – later on,  one of the best things to do  in the capital city is join the madrileños at buzzy tapas spots, elegant cocktail lounges, laid-back rooftop bars, heaving clubs and more. The party inevitably goes on into the next morning.

4. Feast on local specialties across Spain

A deep love of fabulous food infuses Spain’s soul. You’ll be grazing on pintxos in Bilbao and San Sebastián , crowding into  Granada 's tapas bars, seeking out creative Michelin stars in Catalonia, digging into super-fresh Valencian paellas by the Mediterranean, getting to know the country’s 2023 Capital of Gastronomy Cuenca  and much more.

Planning tip:  For a deep dive into regional Spanish cuisine, join an expert-led food tour. Devour Tours  has switched-on guides in Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and San Sebastián, while Annie B’s Spanish Kitchen runs fabulous tapas tours in Cádiz province (an Andalucian foodie hot spot).

A shot of an open space where the walls and benches are covered in tiny colored tiles forming a mosaic

5. Admire Modernisme in Barcelona with an insider

Exploring Catalonia’s irresistible capital with a local architect instantly brings life to the Modernista wonders created by Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and others in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Look beyond the star acts ( La Sagrada Família , Casa Batlló, Park Güell ), and don’t miss Gaudí’s floral-tiled first commission Casa Vicens (in Gràcia) and other lesser-known Modernista flourishes around L’Eixample and El Raval.

Planning tip: Help combat Barcelona’s much-discussed overtourism issues by visiting outside high season and weekends, staying in officially licensed accommodations , and supporting sustainably focused projects with local roots and powerful initiatives, as well as exploring the rest of Catalonia (from the heights of the Pyrenees to the rice-making Delta de l’Ebre).

6. Road trip around Galicia’s lyrical landscapes

Savoring a glass of crisp albariño with a platter of fresh-as-it-gets seafood is a distinctly Galician moment – just one of many surprises in Spain’s beautifully green northwest corner. Roam well beyond Santiago de Compostela to uncover timeworn stone villages, centuries-old wineries, plunging valleys and over 1000km (620 miles) of wild, windswept coastline sprinkled with sublime beaches, particularly around the Illas Cíes and the Costa da Morte .

Planning tip:  While summer brings the warmest weather, June and September are much quieter (always pack an umbrella!).

Two people wearing backpacks walk along a path through farmland on a sunny day

7. Walk an alternative Camino

Finally stumbling into the glittering cathedral in Galicia’s capital Santiago de Compostela , after trekking hundreds of miles along the fabled Camino de Santiago (Way of St James), is a magical moment. Travelers seeking a less-trodden path can swap the popular traditional Camino Francés for the wonderfully rewarding Camino del Norte (Northern Way) or Camino Primitivo . The 600km (373-mile) Norte meanders along and inland from Spain’s northern coastline from Irún, while the challenging 320km (199-mile) Primitivo from Oviedo is believed to be the original Camino, walked by King Alfonso II back in the ninth century.

Planning tip:  You can combine the two routes by following an alternative branch of the Norte to Oviedo, then linking up with the Primitivo.

8. Wander off the beaten track in Extremadura

Portugal-bordering Extremadura plunges visitors into one of Spain’s least-touristed corners and is well worth a visit. The secluded Jerte, Ambroz and La Vera valleys reveal half-timbered houses, snow-topped mountains and spring cherry blossom, and there’s outstanding birdwatching in the 180-sq-km (69-sq-mile) Parque Nacional de Monfragüe from March to October. There are also some extraordinary monumental cities, including Cáceres (with its glittering historical core), Trujillo (made wealthy by its high-profile conquistador families) and Mérida (for some of Spain’s most important Roman ruins).

An upwards shot of the interior of a building with many columns and archways, with a symmetrical pattern of bricks alternating between red and white

9. Bask in the beauty of Andalucía’s Moorish architecture

Spain’s eight centuries of Islamic rule produced some of its most spectacular architecture, particularly across Andalucía. The unmissable jewels of Moorish Al-Andalus are Granada’s Alhambra , Córdoba’s Mezquita-Catedral and Seville’s Real Alcázar and Giralda , but there’s plenty more. Travel between Córdoba and Granada along the little-known Ruta del Califato (Route of the Caliphate), whose castle-topped villages mark the final medieval frontier between Christian and Islamic Spain; ramble around the majestic alcazabas (fortified palaces) in Almería and Málaga; or head into Huelva’s remote Aracena hills to uncover a rare, perfectly preserved Moorish-era mosque.

10. Enjoy heavenly hikes in every season

Spain’s varied climate means there are outstanding hiking opportunities year-round – from Granada’s snow-dusted Sierra Nevada (perfect in July/August) and northern Spain’s jagged Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa  to the cloud-brushing heights of Aragón ’s Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido and Catalonia ’s Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici. Along the coast, hit soul-stirringly beautiful trails such as the 200km-long (124-mile) Camiño dos Faros in Galicia or the cliff-top paths in Almería’s Cabo de Gata.

Planning tip:  The north shines brightest from June to September/October (book accommodations ahead), while walking in Andalucía is best from March to June and in September and October.

Two backpackers look at a view of a town with its white buildings tucked into the hillside

11. Stroll between Andalucía’s white villages

Sunny Andalucía is dotted with impossibly scenic pueblos blancos (white villages), with two main pockets in rural Cádiz and Granada’s Alpujarras valleys – and while these make for fascinating road trips , a series of serene rural walking paths also track between them. Venture off on the long-distance GR7 in the remote eastern Alpujarras (Mairena and Trevélez villages are highlights), or lace up your walking boots in Cádiz’s Sierra de Grazalema, where Moorish castles, rare pinsapos (Spanish firs) and rust-roof villages await.

12. Learn about Spain’s finest olive oil

If you’ve ever wondered where those liquid-gold Spanish olive oils come from, central Andalucía’s Mar de Olivos (Sea of Olives) is a hidden-in-plain-sight joy. Some of the world’s top-tier olive oils are produced among its 15,000 sq km (5790 sq miles) of rolling hills, craggy peaks and silent valleys, particularly across Jaén and Córdoba provinces (where Priego de Córdoba in the Sierra Subbética is the shining star). Stay in one of the region’s peaceful rural hotels, some of which offer home-cooked meals using their own olive oils, and visit local almazaras (olive mills) for tastings, tours and strolls among the olive groves.

13. Engage in responsible tourism in the Balearics

Forget the dance-until-dawn stereotypes – the four Balearics islands make up one of the Mediterranean’s most blissful escapes, with a strong drive towards responsible tourism that includes a ban on single-use plastics since early 2021. Whether you fancy seductive Mallorca , soothing Menorca , always-chic Ibiza or barefoot-beach Formentera , you can stay in a stylish environment-first agroturisme , learn about the islands’ artisan traditions (from cheese-making to basketry), get involved in beach clean-ups, and soak up the outdoors on hikes, kayak trips, horse-riding adventures and more.

14. Don’t miss the Canary Islands

Around 1000km (620 miles) southwest of mainland Spain, the eight sunbathed Canaries pack in everything from Atlantic volcanic beaches and eerily beautiful pine forests to hikes up the country’s tallest peak, 3715m-high (12,100ft) Teide.

Planning tip:  Picking just one island can be a challenge – here’s our in-depth Canary Islands guide to help you narrow it down.

Beach-goers in silhouette on a beach. Many surfers are heading out to the ocean, where large waves are building

15. Go surfing and exploring along Spain’s green north coast

Some of Spain’s top surf beaches are hidden along the cliff-edged northern coastline, hugging the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia . While here, discover stone-built villages, extraordinary galleries, ancient cave art, lively cities, local cider and spectacular mountain ranges.

16. Spot rare wildlife in a remote natural wonderland

In recent years, major conservation efforts have brought several of Spain’s most beloved threatened species back from the brink of extinction, including the Iberian lynx, the Cantabrian brown bear and the majestic quebrantahuesos (bearded vulture). Head out in Andalucía’s mountainous Parque Natural Sierra de Andújar for the chance to see a lynx, or venture to the remote Parque Natural de Somiedo in southwest Asturias to (perhaps!) spy a brown bear.

17. Experience flamenco in its Andalucían heartland

There are flamenco shows all over Spain, but the most inspiring place to lose yourself in this soulful ancient art is its southern birthplace: the Cádiz-Jerez-Seville triangle. Hunt down events at local peñas (flamenco clubs), and don’t miss Jerez ’s lively tabancos , where fiery shows are served up alongside sherry poured straight from the barrel.

Planning tip:  If you've ever dreamed of learning to dance, this is the ideal place to pick up a few flamenco steps of your own.

18. Wake up in magical accommodations

Fancy slumbering away in a medieval monastery, a fairy-tale castle or a Renaissance palace? Book in at one of Spain’s 98 wonderfully atmospheric paradores , which revolve around sensitively converted buildings packed with centuries of history. Or hunt down a seductive independent stay with its own backstory: a chicly reimagined Modernista mansion in Barcelona, a Balearic farmhouse hidden down a dusty pine-scented track, an artily reimagined home in Cádiz’s Vejer de la Frontera. Many of Spain’s most exciting accommodation spots are attractions in their own right, fueled by inspired, creative design.

19. Get lost in lively, forward-looking Valencia

With its pioneering plans for achieving carbon-neutral tourism , Valencia (Spain’s third-largest city) is becoming a hot tourist favorite. In a short visit, you could be uncovering the Ciutat Vella ’s market-fresh meals, intriguing museums and varied architecture, exploring Santiago de Calatrava’s Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias , savoring seafood in El Cabanyal, cycling along the seafront and more.

Planning tip:  The Fallas de Valencia festival makes March an outrageously popular month to visit Valencia, but this sunny Mediterranean city is also a perfect autumn or winter escape .

20. Marvel at an ancient (or not so ancient) cathedral

Most Spanish cities unravel around a central plaza overlooked by a formidable cathedral, with styles stretching from Romanesque to Modernista. The country’s most architecturally and spiritually moving cathedrals include León, Toledo , Salamanca , Seville, Burgos , Granada, Segovia , Santiago de Compostela and Palma de Mallorca , as well as Barcelona’s Sagrada Família.

Planning tip:  Climbing up a cathedral tower or joining one of an ever-growing number of rooftop tours is a fantastic way to find a fresh perspective on the city below.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

My Top Gifts for Travelers for the Holidays

A small digital camera wrapped in Christmas lights in front of a bright pink background

Travelers can be a fickle group of people to buy gifts for. We’re constantly coming and going, we usually don’t carry a lot of stuff with us, and no two travelers are alike. Finding the perfect gift for the traveler in your life can be tricky.

While a plane ticket is never a bad idea (I’m a window seat in case anyone is thinking of getting me one), I’ve put together this ultimate gift guide for travelers as there’s a lot of great travel gear out there these days that helps people travel cheaper and better.

Even me, the gear-adverse traveler, likes a lot of this stuff!

This is stuff I actually think is super useful. No nonsense. No fluff. Just the best gifts for intrepid travelers and globetrotting nomads.

36 Best Gifts for Your Travel-Obsessed Bestie

Give the globe-trotter in your life something to suit their wanderlust.

Fear not, we’ve got you covered. We’ve deferred to the experts—fellow staffers, flight attendants, and travel agents—to share our list of the chicest, actually useful gifts one could bestow upon such a traveler . From sleep-enabling pillows you wouldn’t step onto an international flight without, to those oh-so-necessary skin-care products—these items will ease the malaise of long customs lines, unexpected flight delays, and not-quite-home hotel comforts. Many of these items are tried and tested, earning our seal of approval. But of course, like any good friend—we’ll let you take all the credit.

Aspinal of London Passport Cover

Passport Cover

A passport cover is an essential accessory for the modern traveler. A passport cover embossed in crocodile leather and handcrafted from fine full-grain leather and suede is a luxury. This chic travel item features a slip pocket for a boarding pass stub and a grosgrain ribbon page marker. Did we mention it comes with personalization options?

Amazon Kindle

Kindle

I don’t think the latest Kindle editions could get any lighter. The book lover’s device now has a 300 PPI high-resolution display that allows users to read its paperlike display with impressive ease. So go ahead, get lost in the latest fantasy series you’ve started and let your phone chime away with messages that certainly won’t distract you (you can blame the bad airplane connection).

Assouline The Classics Collection Chic Stays

The Classics Collection Chic Stays

We at ELLE DECOR know better than anyone that a home away from home can be just the thing one needs to feel renewed once again. This book tells of 36 of the loveliest spots around the world, from the beaches of Kate Winslet’s secret Scottish retreat to Sofia Coppola’s luxurious family villa to Kate Moss’s favorite beach in the Maldives. Flip through this book, and your friend will be booking their next flight before you can say “ready, set, fly!”

Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag

Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag

If there’s one thing you can trust Dagne Dover to deliver on, it’s smart compartments and quality materials—and its neoprene toiletry bag is no different. It boasts a removable air mesh zip-top pouch and their signature button-down sides. Everything cosmetically aligned will have its place.

The Drop Toptote Hat Clip

Toptote Hat Clip

If your friend is as fashionable as she is loyal, she’s certainly found herself in the conundrum of how to pack a hat with care. This ingenious hat clip allows travelers to save their beloved head accessories the death of a squished luggage moment by clipping it to a handbag for easy, hands-free travel. Bonus: Your friend can also use it for those inevitable beach days, once she’s touched ground.

Beautural Clothes Steamer

Clothes Steamer

Truth: That cute Revolve dress is only as lovely as its wrinkle-free look holds up. That’s to say that, once delivered from the penitentiary of your overpacked suitcase in 90 percent humidity, it’s a hot mess. Fear not. Beautural’s travel-size steamer will give it the flowing smoothness your friend was meant to flaunt.

Mark & Graham Petite Travel Jewelry Case

Petite Travel Jewelry Case

It is said you can learn a lot about a person by the way she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled necklace chains. Lucky for your friend, the latter disaster is not likely to occur after being bequeathed Mark & Graham’s foil-embossed jewelry organizer.

Marlow Mini Pillow

Mini Pillow

Let’s face it, you never know what kind of neck support an airline (or a hotel, for that matter) will offer. Give your friend the greatest gift: the peace of mind of knowing they have every shot of fighting the slugfest of a never-ending red-eye flight. Sweet dreams!

Apple AirTag

AirTag

When it comes to luggage care, airlines can be as dependable as your first boyfriend. Slip the Apple AirTag into your bag, however, and you’ll know the second your Delsey Paris has been rerouted to Tokyo instead of Hawaii.

She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm

Personal Safety Alarm

There’s no better way to let your friend know you’ve got her back than by giving her a personal safety alarm. It’s chic enough to earn a place on her keyring—and smart enough to be worth the keyring real estate. When she’s wandering the streets of Italy trying to find her hotel in the dark, she’ll be thanking you.

Cuyana Travel Beauty Roll in Pink

Travel Beauty Roll in Pink

Can one have too many beauty organizers? Cuyana’s soft Italian leather roll organizer is really the only one you need. A winner of Allure ’s 2023 Best of Beauty awards, this chic compartment will satisfy all your friend’s OCD tendencies.

Pinch Provisions Cocktail Kit

Cocktail Kit

Give your friend all the reasons to raise a glass. Anthropologie’s Pinch Provisions cocktail kit contains two ice-cube molds, a sample size of simple syrup, gold jigger, edible gold drink glitter, cocktail picks, a recipe card, and two coasters—all neatly placed in a Furoshiki-style bow box that is as neatly proportioned as her suitcase (on the best of days). Because you never know when and where—and within what time zone—you just might need some spirits.

Free the Ocean Peppermint Toothpaste Tablets

Peppermint Toothpaste Tablets

Is your fellow jet-setter always on the road? Give them something to smile about—toothpaste tablets that foam easily and won’t be setting off any liquid alarms at security check. We especially love that you can purchase the tin once and then get refills. The ultimate environmental-friendly move.

BCXSY Infinity Pillow

Infinity Pillow

A bazillion-hour flight can necessitate a range of body contortions in an attempt to get comfortable. Amsterdam-based BCXSY’s Infinity Pillow can accommodate any neck position. Bonus: It’s machine washable.

Saunorch Universal International Travel Power Adapter

Universal International Travel Power Adapter

Sometimes the most practical gifts are spot on. This universal travel power adapter can fit literally anywhere in the world—and its multisocket options mean that your AirPods, iPad, laptop, and phone can all be at full charge come sunrise.

Allbirds Women’s Tree Runners Everyday Sneakers

Women’s Tree Runners Everyday Sneakers

If your friend doesn’t believe you when you say the perfect shoe exists, and you found it—gift it to her so she can experience it herself. The Allbirds Women’s Tree Runners Everyday Sneakers can easily slip on and off during security check, while offering cloudlike steps when worn. Talk about being a good friend.

Anthropologie Wanderer Contrast Leather Luggage Tag

Wanderer Contrast Leather Luggage Tag

It’s simple, and it’s cute. Anthroplogie’s colorful leather luggage tags offer that pop of vibrancy to a roller bag and, most importantly, the peace of mind in knowing whether that’s your bag that just emerged among 30 other black bags on the flip side.

Memo Bottle A6 Waterbottle

A6 Waterbottle

They say you can’t reinvent the wheel, but you can flatten a water bottle apparently. Memo Bottle’s A6 water bottle is a genius solution to easy water storage. The chic, plastic-made bottle will go barely noticed against the books in your bag rather than hogging all the space with unnecessary bulkiness. You’re welcome, good friend.

Patchology On the Fly

On the Fly

It goes without saying that you validate her plenty, but a travel pack of all her favorite skincare items will always be appreciated. Who knew one could be so relaxed up in the air?

Wild One Pet Travel Carrier

Pet Travel Carrier

Chica’s fur baby is her everything—after you, of course. So give her a pet travel carrier that will allow her to bring Fido along with her on that next getaway. Not one but two of your besties will thank you.
