SIBERIA - VILLIS FAMILY, AUSTRALIA Thank you for organising the amazing Siberia experience and Russian city leg. We had a great time and particularly enjoyed Altai and its cultural experience. All the guides really love the Siberian region and are enthusiastic in sharing the history, lifestyle and local beauty. The fact that there were few locals the spoke English was not an issue – we all managed to make ourselves understood. Lots of locals wondered why we would come to Siberia for a holiday – when we booked I would have said for the nature but now I think I particularly for the Altai – it would be to experience the way of life of the different peoples. The support David received from Discovery Russia after losing his immigration card was wonderful. It is a bit scary facing policemen with machine guns. There were a few hiccups but everything was reorganised without much fuss. Irkutsk and Lake Baikal – Tatiana the guide was absolutely wonderful and we really enjoyed her company. We had a slight hiccup with the accommodation in Listvyanka but Tatiana sorted this and the alternative arrangements were extremely comfortable. The wooden architecture village was very interesting as was the Buryat museum. We really enjoyed the lunch complete with mock Buryat wedding ceremony. Irkutsk itself was interesting and a bit more free time just to explore here might work better. The boat trip on Lake Baikal along the old trans Siberian railway was very enjoyable. This probably works better than the planned historic train journey with the need to go to and from Irkutsk. Would love to experience Lake Baikal in spring when there is still some ice and snow but not extreme sub zero temperatures. Altai – Konstantine is a wonderful host and his knowledge and love of Altai really made this part of journey extra special. Anya was a great as the bridge for communication and was always an advocate for our best interests. The bonus for us in having the two of these lovely people was that my son who has much more energy and agility than us was on occasion able to do more energetic activities with someone and not stuck with us old folk. Konstantine was also very accommodating in changing the itinerary and accommodation to better suit our limitations and interests. The highlights here are many and varied. The ability to interact with ordinary everyday people was a real bonus – we played games and music on the lawn with local families at Konstantine’s hotel and were taught a new card games by schoolgirls at Uchen mek.

BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES and REMOTE SOVIET OUTPOSTS

June 30 ⇾ july 09.

Thank you for your request, we will get back to you within the next 24 hours.

In addition to our regular group departures to Altai , we also offer tour services for private travel parties and lone wolves alike. As a traveller-oriented boutique operator, tailored trips and bespoke adventures are our bread and butter. Get in touch for more info on our customised journeys to Altai !

Day 1 – barnaul.

Meet-and-greet at Barnaul Regional Airport and introductory briefing about the region, the route and the set of rules to observe while travelling in Altai .

We'll spend the entire day touring Barnaul : a quintessentially Soviet city full of grandiose monuments, Lenin statues and WWII memorials as well as remarkable examples of socialist architecture and public art (mosaics and bas-reliefs).

In the evening we'll go out for a musical concert either at the Philharmonia or at the Orchestra of Russian National Music Instruments or - if you are more into independent venues - we will assist to a show of one of the many young indie bands enlivening the town's nightlife.

Overnight in Barnaul .

DAY 2 – Topolnoye

Right after breakfast we will start our trip to one of the most interesting area of the Altai Krai : after a three-hour southwards drive, we will find ourselves surrounded by the beautiful highlands of the Altai mountains.

After a traditional lunch at a small family-run dairy factory, we'll then continue our trip to the picturesque village Topolnoye : the people of this village are descendant of the Old-Believers who separated in 1666 from the official Russian Orthodox Church ; most of them moved to the secluded corners of Siberia in the 17th century and have kept living in a traditional way for centuries.

Dinner and overnight in Topolnoye .

DAY 3 – Karakol Valley

After breakfast we will drive to the border between the Altai Krai and the Altai Republic proper.

Along the way we will visit the world-famous Denisova Cave : a true Eldorado for palaeontologists as this is the very place where a fossilised phalanx of a girl’s finger was found and the subsequent DNA -analysis showed that it belonged neither to the extinct Neanderthals nor to Homo Sapiens , but represented a separate branch within the evolution of our species.

After lunch we will eventually enter the Karakol Valley , a sacral place among the Altai people, the Turkic -speaking Mongolic nation of shamanic traditions that consitute the titular ethnicity of the autonomous republic we've just entered.

We will stay for the night at a local family and learn about the traditions and the rituals of Altai people .

In the evening we will also meet the local kaichi (shaman-cum-dance-cum-singer) and enjoy a concert of throat singing accompanied by national musical instruments such as the topshur and the komyz .

Dinner and overnight in the Karakol Valley .

Bespoke Experiences • Traditional shamanic performance in the Karakol Valley and optional horse ride in the Chuya Steppe .

Day 4 – chuisky trakt.

In the morning we will enjoy some sightseeing around the Karakol Valley : ancient petroglyphs, Scythian burial mounds and mysterious monoliths.

We will also pay our respect to the Groundhog Monumen t, erected to thank the fluffy rodent for having saved - with its flesh - the local population during the WWII famines.

We will then travel along the Chuisky Trakt , a stunning road that National Geographic named as one the world's best drives.

During our journey we will, of course, stop at several picturesque tiny Altai villages of traditional wooden yurts (also known as ails ) and Soviet nostalgia such as Boochi , Bichiktubom and Kupchegen.

Dinner and overnight at a local guesthouse along the Chuisky Trakt .

Day 5 – Kosh Agach

We'll continue our drive down the Chuisky Trakt and cross en route the Kurai Steppe , a very beautiful inter-montane basin where you can admire, depending on weather conditions, impressive views of the mighty Chuisky Ridge .

Exiting the Kurai Steppe we will explore the coloured mountains of Kyzyl-Chin , also known as Mars , and the melancholic Altai town of Chagan-Uzon .

We will then enter the Chuya Steppe and head for the end-of-the-world settlement of Kosh-Agach , where we will tour the market full of smuggled goods from Mongolia , the traditional wooden mosque of the local Kazakh community and the mandatory Lenin statue.

Dinner and overnight in Kosh-Agach .

Day 6 – Chuya Steppe

Today we will explore the Chuya Steppe : we will pass along the River Yustyd , home to ancient burial mounds, and stop at the remote hamlet of Kokoryu , which hosts a mummified head of a Sarmatian warrior.

During our time in steppe, besides admiring the breathtaking and slightly surreal sceneries, we will also get acquainted with the Kazakh culture visiting the extremely remote Kazakh villages of Jana-Aul and Tashanta .

DAY 7 – Chuisky Trakt

We’ll start the day early and head back north driving again along the scenic Chuisky Trakt .

Besides the usual stops for food, toilet and photography, we'll break the long haul by visiting stunning natural attractions, such as the Blue Geyser Lake and the Red Gate rock formations, as well as a few more Altai villages and towns like Aktash and Ongudai .

If time permits, we will also take a short scenic detour across the Ulagan Valley , a place of staggering vistas and ancient traditions.

DAY 8 – Kamlak

After breakfast we will continue our trip along the Chuisky Trakt and, after crossing the once-feared Seminsky Pass , we’ll begin our descend towards the Katun river basin.

We’ll first stop in Kamlak to visit a surprisingly well maintained botanical garden, a real cornucopia of local herbs and flowers, and later head to the village of Askat , where local Buddhists live in harmony with yogis, indigenous peoples, as well as members of the Russian community; Askat has 120 residents, with one-third of them working as artists and painters, a true hippie commune in southern Siberia !

Four miles from Askat , we will visit the hamlet of Anos , where the famous Altai artist and social activist Choros-Gurkin once had his workshop, and then drive further south to Chemal , a mountain resort village famous for its wooden churches and monasteries as well as a rather crumbling Soviet -era dam.

Dinner and overnight in Chemal .

Lake Teletskoye Detour Depending on availability and weather conditions, we also offer an alternative remote diversion from our standard Altai route: we will proceed from Ulagan to the otherworldly beautiful Chulyshman Valley on Day 7 and then cross the mighty Katu-Yaryk Pass to reach the southern tip of the Lake Teletskoye , an enchanting alpine lake listed as UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site . On Day 8 we will board a ferry across the lake and sail to the lovely village of Artybash , before eventually reaching Gorno-Altaysk on Day 9 .

Day 9 – gorno-altaysk.

We’ll spend a lazy morning in Chemal , filling our lungs with the fresh air of mountainous Altai : a last restock of pure crispness before returning to the restlessness of our daily grind.

In the early afternoon we will eventually arrive in Gorno-Altaysk , the leafy capital of the Altai Republic .

After a well-deserved coffee break, we'll tour the relatively small and yet very compelling Altai National Museum and, of course, pay a visit to the city’s main Soviet monuments and memorials.

Dinner and overnight in Gorno-Altaysk .

DAY 10 – FAREWELL TO THE MOUNTAINS

After sharing a last Siberian meal together, we'll take care of your transfer to Gorno-Altaysk Regional Airport .

Possible tour extensions to this itinerary include: Tuva   and/or Khakassia .

End of the tour.

altai eagle fest 03

Bayan-Olgii province has the most active Mongolian eagle hunters in the world. Nomadic Kazakh people in this region have kept their ancient Kazakh culture for thousands of years. The main reason they can keep the traditions alive is the “nomadic lifestyle”.

They migrate 4 times a year. Their way of living is truly amazing but at the same time can be very difficult. From the early morning, they take care of their animals, and it continues till late evening.

The Nomad’s children start to help the family from a young age and simultaneously learn nomadic traditions and skills. Eagle hunting is in their blood. The Kazakh eagle hunters learn eagle training from their father, and it is passed from one generation to another.

Nowadays there are over 200 Mongolian eagle hunters in the Bayan-Olgii province. Our Discover Altai team offers you the unique experience to visit a Kazakh eagle hunter’s family in this remote corner of the world.

You will have the opportunity to stay with a family and explore a lot of ancient traditions. Be a part of real golden eagle hunting. The Kazakh eagle hunters will show us how he trains his eagle.

Enjoy the stunning Altai mountains and feel free to take pictures and film the scenery. Once-in-a-lifetime experience guaranteed!

Golden Eagle Facts:

  • Female eagles are bigger bodies and are braver than male
  • Eagle Huntress prefer female eagles because they are strong and powerful
  • Eagles have great speed, far from eyesight, and powerful feet with sharp talons
  • Eagles generally hunt mammals but can hunt bigger ones as they want

Tour Itinerary:

  • Day 1 – 3
  • Day 4 – 7

DAY 1:  Arrive to Bayan-Olgii province

Welcome to the land of the magnificent  Altai Mountains  and nomadic Mongolian eagle hunters. Over 90% of the population of the province are ethnic Kazakh people who have the ancient tradition of hunting golden eagles.

At the airport, you will be welcomed by your local support team.

This includes an English-speaking tour guide, driver, and cook. We will drive to the Golden eagle hunter’s family.

They will prepare the traditional Kazakh meal “Bes Barmakh” which is a big plate of meat from different parts of the animal with potatoes and noodles. The name of the meal literally means “five fingers” so you will eat it with your hands instead of a fork. Enjoy the hospitality of nomadic people.

Accommodation:  Stay overnight at Kazakh eagle hunters family

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Total drive:  3-4 hours

DAY 2:   Golden Eagles Real hunting

Today you have an opportunity to be a part of real hunting. You can learn some traditional customs from the family as well. We will be riding horses in the Altai mountains, so you need to be dressed in as many layers as you can to keep warm.

Before you ride a horse, our guide will give you some instructions on horse riding just to be safe. Enjoy the stunning nature of Altai Mountain.

Total horse trek:  4-5 hours

DAY 3:  Mongolian Eagle Hunters Photography

Today we will go to a different spot than yesterday. Feel free to take photos during the eagle hunting. You are always welcome to ask the  golden  eagle hunter to pose for different kinds of pictures. Also, we can arrange to invite a couple more Golden eagle hunters to film and participate in a photo shoot.

We are happy to arrange that. We hope that you can witness how the Golden eagles catch the fox or rabbit. At the end of the hunting, the Golden eagle hunters will demonstrate their authentic eagle hunting experience. The eagles will fly up the hillside and come all the way down when the Mongolian eagle hunters call. Finally, we will return to the family.

Total eagle hunting : 3-4 hours

DAY 4:  Drive to another eagle hunters family

After having breakfast we will drive to the other side of the province of western Mongolia. Here you can meet another eagle hunter and his family. You will learn more about nomadic life and their traditions. Also, you can hike around and climb to the hillside to enjoy the surrounding views.

Accommodation:  Stay overnight at eagle hunters family

Total drive:  3-4 hours.

DAY 5:   Golden Eagle hunting

Today is another day of eagle hunting by horseback. Go up to the mountains and enjoy the stunning nature. You can have a memorable picture on horseback with the eagle landed on your arm like a real eagle hunter.

Western Mongolia is full of unique experiences. The Discover Altai team will try to include as many highlights as possible. For example, we can visit a nomadic family who has a wolf you can pet, go ice fishing, and attend a traditional concert.

We can arrange to organize a short concert where you can enjoy traditional throat singing or Kazakh Folk songs.

DAY 6:  Drive back to Olgii

Arrive in Olgii. On the way back we will stop at the archaeological site where you can see the ancient Stone Man monuments from the IX-XII century. Transfer to the hotel. Visit the main highlights of the city such as the Traditional Museum and an open-air market. We will have a farewell dinner at the restaurant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of eagles are in mongolia.

Booted eagles, Greater Spotted Eagle, steppe eagles, Golden eagles, Imperial eagle, white-tailed eagle and mountain-hawk eagle are seven of the dark colored Eagles that live in Mongolia. However only Golden Eagles are used for hunting purposes.

How to train an eagle to hunt ?

Hunters seek young birds that have not yet been independent, as they will be more likely to adapt to living with humans. The ideal candidate is an eagle that is about four years old which has experience living and hunting in the wild. Only female eagles are captured, as they typically grow larger than males – up to 2.5 meters in wingspan and 7 kilograms in weight when full grown – while still being just as powerful and aggressive.

Why are eagles blindfolded?

Eagles are blindfolded with hoods because they feel safer and more calm this way. Hunters use the hoods during hunting and feeding times.

Where do Kazakh eagle Hunters live?

The Kazakh eagle hunters reside near the Altai Mountains. With the frozen air and the endless plains below cloudy skies, one can feel small and lost. But despite these conditions,-40 Celsius winters included- there are still men who hunt with eagles here.

The tour was exactly what we wanted. And thanks to the flexibility of the tour program we were able to really enjoy the tour. The good organization and the excellent guide made it a perfect event. Annoying was only the muddy pathes – I expected muddy walking, but not for such a long time. But it was not a big issue thanks to good material/footwear. But beside that: everything was well organized and worked out perfectly.

altai tours

You have an amazing nature and I have been very happy to live in it for a few days. Life out here is simple and humble and I am fine the contrast from where I usually live. A great experience with tentative guides.

altai tours

We travel Altai region with "AltairTour" company for 13 days everything went just fine, the guides where kind and very knowledgeable, they took good care of every little thing and make the whole experience a treasure for us. I want to send a special thanks to Alex the company owner who was so attentive and honest from the beginning of the connection between us Via E-mail and Whats-app till the last day.

altai tours

This is my second trip with Altair-Tour I've got, right one year after the first, when we went to Tibet and Mount Kailash. I wrote about it. It looks like I'm getting constant a client of this company. But the fact is that in our Siberian region, just few companies offers tours like this. That tours which primarily are informative, not just entertaining character.

When waterfalls wake up..... Finally, I have got acclimatization and can share my impressions about the trip to the Altai during the May holidays. What we liked? - EVERYTHING !!! My eyes and ears rest from the noisy, gray and dusty city, I fell asleep under the crackling of the wood in the stove, and wake up with birds singing, I drank and washed in clean water of the Multinskiye Lakes, walked on a carpet of mountain flowers ...

altai tours

Every time climbing with a backpack to the next top, climbing over fallen tree trunks, slipping on wet rocks, basking in the sun or in vain closing of the omnipresent rain, and ahead of all the same never-ending rise - stalking with the same question: why am I here, in this forest, on this slope, for 4000 km and two days' journey from home, crawling on the mountain?

altai tours

Sorry for my delay, but I never wrote to thank you, or to tell you what a wonderful trip to Altai and Belukha we had !! Thanks for all your help and support to make this happen. It was something special for all involved !!

Dates & Prices

The Altai Photo tour promises cinematic scenery all year round. But visit Altai in autumn and you’ll truly understand why this enchanting place is known to the local Altayans as “ The Golden Mountains of Altai”.

You’ll be given ample opportunity to snap stunning landscape photos of Altai at its very best. Contrasting colours are everywhere - red canyons, silver mountains, white glaciers, yellow grasslands, azure lakes, amber larch trees and evergreen cedar. Every day is more beautiful than the next! This Altai Photo tour was perfectly created for photographers - beginners up to pros are all welcome!

There will be some early starts with few return trips to the same location at different times of day, as well as photography workshops during our downtime. While some light hiking will be necessary, between locations, you and your camera gear will travel in an extra-spacious vehicle. You’ll also stay in comfortable, heated lodging in some of the most remote parts of the Altai Republic!

Landscapes of Altai Photo Tour Highlights:

  • Visit one of the most spectacular places for wide-angle photography in Altai, the Kurai Steppe, where a chain of mountains rise up like giants from the semi-desert plain
  • Explore the incredible Aktru Canyon and the Aktru Glaciers. Temporary ice caves are naturally hollowed out at the base of the glaciers, allowing us to step inside hidden vaults aglow with translucent blue ice.
  • Discover one of the most beautiful sights in Altai. Jangyzkyol Lake (or Blue Lake) is a high-altitude lake, set against the striking backdrop of the North Chuysky Range and its snowy peaks.
  • Photograph the alien landscapes of the Kyzyl Chin River. With its strange rock formations coloured in unearthly bright reds and oranges, you’ll see why it’s been given the nickname Altai Mars.
  • Spend two nights at the Tydtuyaryk Yurt Camp on the Chuya Steppe. In a picturesque gorge at an altitude of 1,800m, this is glamping style accommodation surrounded by amazing scenery. The spacious yurts replicate the traditional style of the Altay, Mongol and Kazakh nomads.

Day 1 welcome to altai.

Arrive at the airport in Gorno-Altaysk, the capital of the Altai Republic.

From the airport, you’ll be transferred to the eco-hotel on the shores of the Katun River. About an hour’s drive south from Gorno-Altaysk, it’s a beautiful spot to relax after a long journey to reach the Altai Republic.

Day 2 Along the Chuysky Highway

In the morning, we make our way south along one the most spectacular mountain roads in Siberia, the legendary Chuysky Trakt or Chuya Highway. Around half of the day will be spent cruising along the majestic, desolate, sealed highway - undoubtedly one of the most beautiful roads in all of Russia.

We’ll cross several incredible mountain passes along the Chuysky Trakt. Chike Taman Pass (1,295m) and the highest of all, Seminsky Pass (altitude 1,717m). By the end of the day, we should arrive at the yurt camp in the Chuya Steppe, a full-service tourist camp with spacious yurts built in traditional nomad style. With some luck, we’ll get in early enough for the 15-minute scramble up to the nearby viewpoint for a phenomenal sunset view over the pristine steppe and its rugged surrounds.

Day 3 Snapshots among giants

Today we hike out from camp early in the morning . Our goal is the dramatic massif of mountains hidden behind Chuya S teppes. We’ll shoot snow-covered mountains with a panoramic view that extends all the way to the beautiful Akkol and Karak u l lakes in the valley s below . After sunrise , we’ll return to camp for some rest and filling breakfast. We’ll also visit a few spots known for their ancient rock petroglyphs dating back to the early bronze age . Other art e facts belonging to the ancient cultures of Altai can sometimes be discovered in this area.

In the afternoon, we head for the valley of the Kyzyl Chin River. Once you set eyes on the alien rock formations and unearthly bright orange, red and brown hues of the surrounding mountains, you’ll see why it’s been given the nickname Altai Mars. These ethereal landscapes will provide the perfect place for a location shoot until dark.

Day 4 The steppes of Kurai

Today we get up shortly before sunrise and head to the mountain viewpoint to take some early light shots at this photogenic time of the day. Next, we depart from the Chuya Steppe and on to our next destination - the steppes of Kurai. Although both considered steppe, you’ll instantly see how different these two locations are in appearance. Kurai Steppe is a vast, intermontane basin with vegetation almost identical to the Mongolian semi-desert steppe not far to the south. In good conditions, an impressive view rises up from the flat grassland to span the entire horizon. This is the mighty North Chuysky Range, with its eternal snow, glaciers and ripple-marked cliffs.

In the afternoon, we’ll arrive in the village of Kurai where we’ll check into our lodging. Once you’re settled, we invite you to attend a special workshop on mountain landscape photography. Closer to sunset, we’ll get to test our skills on a drive to our new shooting point - an extraordinary viewpoint of the Kurai Steppe, the Chuya River and the North Chuysky Range. Once the sun sets, it’s back to Kurai village to retire for the night.

Day 5 Home of the Glaciers

Rise and shine early today again as it’s your last chance to get those perfect snaps on the viewpoint overlooking the Kurai Steppe. At sunrise, the colours are thousands of shades different, yet equally spectacular.

To get to our next shooting location, we’ll need some heavy-duty transport. Climb aboard the all-terrain ZIL Russian truck, one of the few vehicles able to handle the rough road through the Kurai Steppe! We’re on the way to a little-known destination home to one of the biggest glaciers in Altai - Aktru. We’ll settle into a guesthouse for the night in a cosy alpine camping and cabin site.

Day 6 Aktru Glaciers and Ice Caves

Early in the morning, you’ll come face to face with the Aktru Glacier, coming in at an impressive 2,150m high. The Aktru Glacier is one of five located in the Aktru Canyon. Surrounding the canyon, the majestic mountain ranges remain dusted in snow, and the orange-hued trees of the alpine forest shine in the golden autumn light. We’ll set out on foot to photograph the glaciers Big Aktru and Small Aktru.

There are temporary ice caves form at the base of the glaciers, and we should be able to get inside a few for the rare opportunity to see the inside of a glacier. Inside the seemingly solid glacial ice are vaults of dazzling, translucent blue. Ice streams feeding run through the middle of the caves, creating streams that reflect glowing blue light across the walls of ice.

We’ll also photograph the radiant Waterfall Glacier and the prominent peak of Mount Karatash rising above the yellow larch forest.

Day 7 The Legendary Blue Lake

Take the opportunity for another sunrise shoot in the stunning Aktru Canyon. Later on, once bags are packed, we’ll make our journey back to the Kurai Steppe. On the way, we will stop at the mesmerising Jangyzkyol Lake (or Blue Lake), set against a backdrop of snow peaks belonging to the striking North Chuysky Range. We’ll hike the rugged, rocky terrain around the area looking for the best angles for photographing the lake and mountains at sunset.

Day 8 Sunrise at Blue Lake

Today we must rise before sunlight and journey through the night forest back to the Blue Lake for a sunrise photoshoot. When the sun begins to highlight the mountain peaks and reflect their silhouettes in the mirror-still surface of the lake, you’ll realise this view was well worth the early start!

Back at our lodge, we’ll have breakfast and take some well-earned rest. Before lunch, we’ll do a workshop on landscape photography post-processing.

Day 9 Uzunkol and Kidelyu lakes

Today, we’ll depart well before dawn to shoot the magnificent Uzunkol Lake. This superb lake and the scattering of miniature lakes around it beautifully reflect the mountain ranges in the early light. After a picnic-style breakfast, we’ll continue our journey towards the valley of the Chulyshman River. It’s a bumpy, two-hour journey, but well worth it. The best time to shoot in the valley is in the middle of the day, when sunlight reaches the bottom of the gorge and sparkles off the river down below.

Afterwards, we’ll begin heading back to the lodge, stopping for some sunset shooting at Lake Kidelyu, one of the most famous landmarks in Altai.

Day 10 Snapshots on route to Askat

Enjoy a bit of a sleep-in today before we begin heading back towards civilization. We’ll make a couple of interesting stops along the way. First, the brilliant blue Geyser Lake. Staring into the piercing turquoise depths, you may notice the occasional bubbling “geyser”, spitting out bluish clay and sand and forming concentric circles at the bottom of the lake. We’ll again cross the immense Seminsky Pass (altitude 1,717m), where you can get a heart-stopping view down into the valley and the confluence of the Chui and Katun rivers.

By lunch, we should make it to our overnight stop in Askat, a picturesque village renowned for its master craftsmen. A third of Askat’s 120 residents are artists and painters. Admire their handicrafts and ethnic instruments and try soothing sound therapy using Tibetan style singing bowls.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy a rare performance of kaichi, a traditional style of throat singing the Altayans used to relate stories and heroic legends.

Day 11 Gorno-Altaysk goodby hugs

From Askat, it’s about an hour’s drive to Gorno-Altaysk, where we’ll say our goodbyes at the airport, our minds and our memory cards overflowing with unforgettable images.
