Travel specialists have never been more essential than they are right now, with their invaluable ability to pivot, re-book and offer advice. We picked 10 standouts in the luxury field from across the world, a directory of those who embody that above-and-beyond spirit essential in the past year.
Christoper Sitwell, Cazenove + Loyd
Wilmot-Sitwell has been working in travel for more than three decades. The co-owner of a 16-person London-based agency specializes in long-haul luxury, often to far-flung sites in rural Africa and Asia. The team there spent much of 2020 canceling or postponing trips—most recently, unpicking rescheduled itineraries to the Tokyo Olympics when a ban on foreign spectators was announced.
The firm anticipated today’s conscious-travel concerns from the outset, always focusing on owner-run and locally staffed independent operations, such as preservation outfit Campfire in Zimbabwe. Cazenove + Loyd also offsets the entire carbon cost of its research recces via a partnership with CommuniTree , a 12-square-mile tropical reforestation project in Nicaragua. Clients can easily opt into this, too; anyone whose itinerary swoops through the country can visit the project and personally plant the trees.

Tanya Dalton, Managing Director UK, Greaves
Dalton leads the UK office of this India specialist outfitter, which was founded by her Mumbai-born grandfather in 1978 and later run by her mother. With generations’ worth of in-depth experience and exclusive connections at her fingertips, she arranges custom trips as luxe as they are immersive. Depending on their interests, travelers may find themselves granted entrée to private palaces, sacred religious sites and landmarked government buildings; meeting with celebrated curators, authors, artisans, jewelers, chefs or astrologers; or exploring desert wilds while staying at plush mobile camps.
Dalton’s team—45 in Delhi and Mumbai, and 15 in the UK—helped extract some 40 clients from India at the start of the pandemic, as borders closed. Now she’s helping guests plan their return. On her radar currently are safaris to spot India’s rising tiger population, top-end hotel openings in Rajasthan and a new single-suite wooden boat that’s perfect for privately cruising the Ganges, Bhagirathi and Hooghly Rivers.
Jules Maury, Scott Dunn Private
Maury runs this offshoot of the UK-based travel firm, focused entirely on bespoke itineraries. Much of her work during the pandemic involved extended stays for home-schooling families who were looking to live and work in a new locale, whether spending two and a half months at Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives or a month in residence at Antigua’s Jumby Bay. Another guest commandeered the five-room Sheldon Chalet in Denali National Park, an ultra-secluded property accessible only by a 45-minute helicopter ride.
The SDP team follows multiple pro-social protocols when it travels and encourages clients to follow suit, including the Pack for a Purpose program, in which visitors pack requested supplies in their luggage for distribution at the destination. It’s laser-focused on ethical practices, too. Animal welfare is a priority, so providers that offer bullfighting or elephant riding are not used, and there’s a pledge that 90 percent of all operators will not provide single-use plastics to guests by the end of 2023.
Deborah Calmeyer, Roar Africa
The Zimbabwe-born Calmeyer has carved out a discrete niche as the ultimate elite safari planner, with the ability to pull off near-impossible requests, even during the pandemic. Rwanda’s government requires a negative PCR Covid-19 test for visitors, but offers only the throat-swab version at Kigali airport—a problem for one Roar Africa client, desperate to go gorilla-trekking but phobic about anything touching his throat. Calmeyer set up a protocol change, arranging for a nose swab to be administered instead.
She has offices in Nairobi, Johannesburg and Cape Town, with the HQ in New York, and Roar Africa continued to pay drivers, freelance guides and its staff even during lockdown, as governmental support in situ was scant. Roar Africa supports several social programs, including an all-women anti-poaching academy in Kenya, which has so far graduated almost 30 fully trained rangers, and underwrites a scholarship at a college of tourism in South Africa that trains women to work at local hotels and lodges.
Catherine Heald, Remote Lands
Remote Lands’ expertise centers entirely on planning ultra-luxury trips for Americans to Asia, with offices in New York and Bangkok, plus country managers in every locale.
Heald and business partner Jay Tindall try to ensure a positive impression both for their guests and by them, encouraging clients, for example, to fund the digging of a water well for a local family whenever Siem Reap in Cambodia forms part of the itinerary. Conscious of the higher carbon footprint of itineraries that span the continent, the pair deliberately minimize the number of flights, private or commercial.
Last year, a Texas couple who were planning to go solo to Asia to celebrate both his 70th birthday and their 40th wedding anniversary had to postpone, and instead Heald helped them turn their three-week, four-country trip into a reunion with their grandchildren, whom they plan to take along this November.
Beks Ndlovu, Founder of African Bush Camps
Ndlovu has maintained momentum, despite the safari industry’s devastating year. The operator and hotelier kept his entire 600-person staff employed while also unveiling Khwai Leadwood, a new high-design lodge in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It’s the latest in his eco-conscious properties; he has rolled out 16 of them in 15 years across three countries, a remarkable achievement. Each has a light footprint, via solar farms and water recycling, while also offering direct support to surrounding communities via the company’s ABC Foundation.
Even amid the logistical and medical constraints of the past year, Ndlovu seamlessly pulled off a recent journey for 14 people to Zimbabwe via private plane. “There was a lot of juggling, but it was well worth it,” says Ndlovu, who advocates for guests to spend their tourism dollars with brands that preserve wilderness areas and empower minorities and locals. “We continue to make the effort in identifying key talent that we can support and help rise to the surface.”
Cedric Reversade, Unique Properties & Events
Luxury travel was already tilting toward villa rentals before the pandemic made the idea of privacy, and self-containment, even more appealing. The London- and Paris-based Reversade and business partner Koskas offer discreet access to the world’s best rental homes in hot spots like Saint-Tropez, Ibiza and Capri while also acting as a travel concierge.
Take the California client who had bought a piano nobile on the Grand Canal in Venice, just before the first lockdown—and for whom they managed to secure a visa even when borders were shut. They also arranged excursions in the city, like a day on Burano with the glassblowers and a night visit to San Marco. Or the polo-loving English client who ditched her Chelsea townhouse for a seafront estate in Ibiza they’d wrangled on her behalf as lockdowns loomed; she then took trips around Spain, including lunching with a retired rejoneador from whom she bought two horses to ride at her country estate.
Cari Gray, Gray & Co.
Based in Santa Monica, Calif., Canadian expat Gray runs a lean team of about 10 with a particular expertise in active luxury. Take the trip to Argentina and Uruguay which shuttled her guests between cycling spots by private jet. It was due to start just as Argentina shuttered its borders last March, so Gray’s team pivoted, re-booking the group on a similar itinerary in California within 24 hours.
She’s determined that the lavish sums spent by clients truly uplift every destination, especially in developing areas. One pair of travelers sponsored GPS collars on a research project for rescued elephants at a local animal reserve in Namibia and witnessed the process firsthand. And an always recommended pit stop in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco is one of the late Eve Branson’s projects, which employs local women making crafts. It isn’t all do-gooding, though: Gray is renowned for arranging Michelin-caliber chefs to cater alfresco at the end of a day’s hiking.
James Jayasundera, Ampersand Travel
Sri Lanka is one of the rare destinations in Asia that have managed to create a program that allows visitors to experience the country during the pandemic, and no one is a better expert to help navigate an itinerary in that new normal than Rome-raised Jayasundera and his five-person, almost two-decade-old firm. Visitors can stay in designated hotels, he explains, and even go sightseeing, as long as they remain in “bio bubbles” to protect the local populace from imported infection.
Jayasundera started early, noting the preferences of each of his 12-strong family as they traveled constantly in his childhood, and has made such attention to detail a hallmark of his commercial operation. Inclusivity is a longtime passion, with a strong presence in the LGBTQ community among both staff and clients, and efforts to use female guides where possible to offset challenges around equality.
Mark Duguid, Carrier
The 60-person, Manchester-based Carrier plans less than 5,000 trips per year, allowing it to retain a reputation for flexibility. It’s willing to change itineraries within hours of departure and never charging amending fees. Duguid and his team were well placed, then, for the challenges of last year: See the couple from the UK who seized the chance to travel when permitted during a break in lockdowns, heading impromptu to the Maldives as an add-on to a last-minute visit to Dubai. Carrier recognized the appeal of the outdoors for travelers in the last year, too, and created an exclusive trip to Octola in Finland’s Arctic Circle, a five-star private wilderness reserve where local guides hosted open-fire lunches and ran excursions on husky sleds and snowmobiles.
Duguid reports a surge in so-called revenge spending, noting that the average booking value for 2021 has risen 90 percent year over year, with clients indulging in once-in-a-lifetime trips after lockdown restrictions loosen.

The Tully Difference
Usa - private travel.
The home of the brave is a never-ending river of exploration from coast to coast, a constant and multifaceted melting pot, always on the boil to create, innovate, dazzle and delight. There are thousands of stories to listen to in the United States of America – of people and places, past, and future – and a myriad of ways to revel in them. Through its iconic landmarks, offbeat treasures, vast natural beauty, cultural eminence, and historic notability, the U.S.A. continues to crash through life at top speed. Go along for the ride!
Big sky country takes over with the wide-open roads of Texas, the mesmerizingly beautiful deserts of New Mexico and Arizona, and up into the mountains of Colorado and Utah
Visitors can never get enough of the United States of America and its continuous cascade of adventure: Repeat visits are very much required. As such, Americans themselves are big on seeking out the new and exciting pieces of the vast puzzle they haven’t yet visited. Where haven’t you been? The historic east coast, the birthplace of the nation, brims with significant cultural centers to get to know and love – Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington – their historic and traditional traits just as celebrated as their unvarnished and vociferous side. A sweep across the south delivers Florida’s beaches and a cavalcade of amusements, Nashville’s honky-tonks, New Orleans’s Mardi Gras, Dollywood, and Graceland. Moving west, big sky country takes over with the wide-open roads of Texas, the mesmerizingly beautiful deserts of New Mexico and Arizona, and up into the mountains of Colorado and Utah, where outdoor diversion is the main attraction on the rolling hills year-round. California is the country’s most-visited state, home to Hollywood’s lavish luxury, the manicured boulevards of Palm Springs, the uniqueness of San Francisco, and the wine regions north of that. If you have the will, nip over to Las Vegas for a nighttime stroll along its famous Strip.

'I stayed in one of the most unique holiday home rentals in the NSW wine region'
By Chloe Longhetti | 1 day ago
I'm going to be honest - I've never stayed in a converted train carriage before or even an overnight sleeper train.
For this city-slicker, the closest I've ever come to sleeping on a train over the years would be on the work commute after a long day - and I've maybe once fallen asleep - in my seat - while catching the Eurostar .
So, when I was invited to stay at The Station in the idyllic NSW Hunter Valley for 9Travel, in Pokolbin to be exact, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect - but I was excited nonetheless.
READ MORE: Five budget Aussie holiday spots you can visit and avoid the crowds
READ MORE: The perfect destinations for a multi-generational family holiday
The idea of it certainly piqued my interest - it features converted train carriages on land - and boy, it did not disappoint.
Just over two and a half hours away, it was an easy drive north from Sydney to the Hunter Valley on one of the last weekends of winter.
What I walked into with my plus-one, my partner, blew me away.
The Station is a mix of creativity, uniqueness, utter luxury and cosiness all in one.
My partner and I stayed at The George, two freshly-converted vintage train carriages with a unique outdoor area connecting the two.
To get to The George, we drove through the sprawling 25-acre property on a winding driveway and past a series of converted carriages.
The black and white "beware of trains'' sign on the grounds got a chuckle out of us both.
Inside the old train carriages
They each have some great names, including The Franklin and The Queen Mary, and are renovated with their own eye-catching unique styles and placed on the land.
There are different sized carriages - accommodating 2-10 people and more carriages on site that are coming soon.
The George, which we stayed in for two nights, can accommodate up to ten people - it boasts five charming beds, two bathrooms and a powder room - which featured a quirky ''all aboard" sign on the wall.
There's no doubt The George would be a perfect stay for guests all year-round, but with the cooler weather of the Hunter region outside for us, it was the perfect cosy winter escape.
READ MORE: Hotel review: The Calile takes its 'urban resort' status to the next level
The carriages also had a spacious kitchen, dining room, and lounge room, air conditioning, and even old touches of the original trains, including wooden doors and a gold restored handbrake.
Outside, underneath the pergola and lights, was another large dining area complete with green ferns, and a BBQ.
On the grass was a small fire pit, perfect to cosy up next to with a wine in hand from one of the many cellar doors in the region.
While the carriages look small from the outside - and some might classify them as tiny homes - we soon learned that looks can be deceiving.
Inside, they feel incredibly spacious, no doubt thanks to the high ceilings and windows running up and down the carriages.
But you certainly knew you were in a train carriage - the carriage with the bedrooms and bathrooms had a thin walkway just like they used to in the old days - but it also felt like you were staying in some seriously luxurious digs.
Things to do in the Hunter Valley
Being right in the heart of Pokolbin, The Station is in close proximity to some of the best wineries, cellar doors and restaurants.
Local attractions include the Hunter Valley Gardens, the famous cheese shops, chocolate shops.
The location also provided easy access to a nearby Highland Games festival at Saltire Estate that drew in hundreds if not thousands of spectators.
All in all, I would definitely recommend a stay at The Station - as it's one of the best and unique experiences I've ever had and beats a typical hotel or accommodation any day.
It almost has an off-the-grid feel, being on an expansive property - but what you experience is sheer luxury.

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts
These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.
Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.
Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises
When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.
For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.
Oceania Cruises
Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."
If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.
Viking Cruises
Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."
Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant
French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.
Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.
Windstar Cruises
Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.
Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours
Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.
Cunard Line
Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line
This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.
Paul Gauguin Cruises
Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises
Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.
Celebrity Cruises
Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.
