The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Jun 7, 2024 • 8 min read

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise. (Once you've chosen your cruise, check out our definitive cruise packing guide .)

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

No 2024 sailings for Marella Cruises from Port Canaveral FL

CruiseMapper logo

Marella Cruises UK , a European cruise line that operated from Port Canaveral, Florida USA in 2023, will not return this year, according to port officials.

The Marella Discovery ship , which was homeported in Port Canaveral/Orlando for 6 months in 2023, was unique for the port. American residents couldn't book sailings on the ship, as it was exclusively for passengers who booked flights from Europe to Melbourne Orlando Airport through TUI Airways. Both Marella Cruises and TUI Airways are subsidiaries of TUI Group , a major international travel company.

John Murray (Port Canaveral's CEO) stated that Marella Discovery was only scheduled to operate from the port during 2023 before moving to other itineraries. There were no issues between the Port and Marella influencing this decision.

In 2023, Marella Discovery completed 28 sailings (May through November), with a total of 85,533 passengers embarking or disembarking. Most itineraries were 7-night voyages.

One of the typical itineraries was named "American Dream," with stops in Charleston, South Carolina; New York City; and Freeport, Bahamas . TUI's business model involves selling comprehensive travel packages, with the cruise being part of a package that includes a flight from a UK airport to Melbourne Orlando International Airport, and sometimes an optional hotel stay in Florida.

Euro 2024 scores, highlights, standings: Spain destroy Croatia; Italy win but Albania make history

Here's what to know about the day's euro action and what's to come.

image-8.png

The first full day of action at Euro 2024 saw Switzerland start off on the right foot with a 3-1 win over Hungary while Spain had no trouble with Croatia, beating them 3-0. In the day's final game, reigning champions Italy dominated in every statistical category except goals, coming away with a 2-1 win over Albania.

Find out all you need to know:

The scoreline indicates a game that was close, but it really shouldn't have been. Italy should have put away a third goal after scoring two in the first quarter of an hour, but in the end it was enough, holding on against an Albania team that didn't put enough pressure on them in the final moments.

Albania's Nedim Bajrami scored after just 23 seconds, capitalizing on a poor throw-in from Italy, to set the mark for the quickest goal scored in a men's European Championship.

From there, it was all Italy. Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella both scored shortly after while Italy also hit the post and were wasteful on a couple other quality chances. Italy had 69% possession and 17 shots to Albania's eight in a game that highlighted the winners' restocked backline.

Alongside Bastoni, Genoa's 22-year-old star center back Riccardo Calafiori stole the show with an exceptional display of strength, timing and smarts, keeping the underdogs at bay for almost the entirety of the game. Aside from a lapse in the final moments where he was bailed out by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, the former AS Roma man was near perfect as Bastoni's partner to replace the retired Leonardi Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

Here's Barella's winning goal:

This was too nice 🤤 Absolute screamer from Nicolò Barella 🇮🇹🔥 pic.twitter.com/Ssu9STAK27 — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 15, 2024

Some good all that experience did them. Veteran-filled Croatia, finalists at the 2018 World Cup and semifinalists in 2022, were thoroughly handled by Spain, 3-0. The young Spanish side, with Barcelona's 16-year-old star Lamine Yamal leading the way, were clinical, scoring all their goals in the first half, putting away 60% of their shots on target in the match.

Alvaro Moratez, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Carvajal scored the goals for the Spanish side while Croatia, despite having 16 shots, lacked precision when it mattered most, getting the tournament off in the poorest of ways. The result now puts so much pressure on Croatia, as one more loss in the group stage could mean the end of their run.

Ruiz, who assisted the first goal with a lovely through ball, stole the show with this incredible effort at the top of the box:

THAT. WAS. BEAUTIFUL. 🤯 Take a bow, Fabián Ruiz 🇪🇸 pic.twitter.com/lgNx9eOPCn — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 15, 2024

Spain entered the tournament with a lot of question marks thanks to a young and experienced squad, but they seem to be instant contenders after this performance. Rodri was a rock centrally as expected, Yamal was taken off to a standing ovation for his dazzling display and there was an inspiring cohesion in the middle of the park that will keep them in any game.

Do keep an eye on Morata though, as he looked to be signaling an injury that sa him taken off in the second half.

It wasn't a thoroughly convincing win for Switzerland despite being in control at 2-0 through the first international goals of Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer. A fine header from Barnabas Varga in the 66th minute saw Hungary get back into the game, but an error in defense gave Breel Embolo the chance he needed to lift the ball over Peter Gulasci to cement all three points.

The opening goal, 12 minutes in, had to be confirmed by VAR, but it was Duah's fine finish inside the box that gave Switzerland all the momentum:

SWITZERLAND STRIKES FIRST 🇨🇭 After a VAR check Kwadwo Duah's goal stands and Switzerland takes a 1-0 lead over Hungary 👏 pic.twitter.com/g5A3SOn7HK — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 15, 2024

Aebischer would make it 2-0 just before the break with this effort. He looked to have made a mistake by not getting his shot off early, but he made it work, curling this lovely shot into the far side of the goal:

WHAT. A. BEAUTY. 🇨🇭 Take a bow, Michel Aebischer 🤯 pic.twitter.com/FK5cyR3ODY — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 15, 2024

Embolo then added style points, capturing this poor headed backpass to make it 3-1:

OH MYYYY 🤯 What a sequence to give Switzerland a 3-1 lead over Hungary 🇨🇭 pic.twitter.com/S2vJnofPVw — FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 15, 2024

The win is a huge one for the Swiss as it likely means even just a draw against lowly Scotland could be enough to get to the knockout stage. At Euro 2020, all teams with four points advanced to the last 16.

How things stand

  • Germany, 3 points (+4)
  • Switzerland, 3 points (+3)
  • Hungary, 0 points (-3)
  • Scotland, 0 points (-4)
  • Spain, 3 points (+3)
  • Italy, 3 points (+1)

What happened yesterday?

Host Germany kicked off the tournament in style with a 5-1 win over Scotland . Five different players, including Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, found the back of the net in a one-sided match. It was 2-0 19 minutes in, and a red card from Ryan Porteous due to a horrendous challenge in the box resulted in a penalty kick and opened the floodgates as Germany scored a third before the break and two more in the second half, making an opening statement that they may back.

Numerous continental and global failures since winning the 2014 World Cup has seen Germany take a hit when it comes to where they ran among the world's best, but this is the perfect chance to prove that they are contenders again. So far, so good.

High octane on the high seas.

Car and cruise lovers, buckle up: Regent Seven Seas will rev up its 2025 Spotlight Voyage with Aston Martin Aramco driver ambassador Pedro de la Rosa, a veteran of more than 100 Grand Prix races. The 10-day circuit aboard the Seven Seas Splendor will make pitstops in Barcelona , Rome and other quintessential European motor racing destinations.

“The Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Aston Martin Aramco partnership was formed on the basis of our shared passion for creating once-in-a-lifetime moments, whether on land or at sea,” says Jefferson Slack, managing marketing director of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One team.

One-of-a-kind opportunities abound during this journey, which departs from Barcelona on July 22, during the prime of the 2025 Formula 1 racing season. De la Rosa will not only be a passenger on the all-balcony vessel, but he’ll also serve as host and ambassador, offering an intimate look into the storied history and heritage of motor racing.

Former F1 driver Pedro de la Rosa.

“I am thrilled to host this exclusive Spotlight Voyage aboard with our friends at Regent and even more excited to be sailing from my hometown of Barcelona,” de la Rosa says. “I’ve spent over three decades pursuing my passion for racing in every corner of the globe, and I can’t wait to share this passion and my unique experiences with both Regent and Aston Martin Aramco fans while cruising the Mediterranean on this special voyage.”

Jake paul vs. mike perry: ppv price and card revealed, climate protestors target uk airfield hosting taylor swift’s private jet.

While onboard, guests will engage in lively panel discussions, virtual racing simulations and more led by de la Rosa and Aston Martin Aramco’s top engineers and executives. Aston Martin-led workshops will give passengers insights into luxury automobile design from a non-racing perspective.

Novices and gearheads alike will be in awe of the full-size replica of one of the yet-to-be-revealed Aston Martin Aramco Formula One 2025 race cars, embellished with the Regent logo, displayed on the Seven Seas Splendor’s pool deck.

Other seamless onboard tie-ins between the brands include exclusively designed hats, polo shirts, jackets and reusable water bottles; race-day accessories for sale in the ship’s boutique; themed cocktails and parties; and screenings of racing documentaries in the ship’s theater.

Seven Seas Splendor.

The all-inclusive, carefully curated cruise’s offshore excursions promise to captivate fine-car aficionados, luxury travelers and history buffs alike. Immerse yourself in the rich racing cultures of places like St. Tropez and Monte Carlo . In the latter, for example, you’ll explore Prince Rainier’s car collection, assembled over 30 years in a newly designed display space that’s just a stone’s throw from Monaco’s iconic Formula 1 racing route. Feel the excitement as you continue a walking tour of the track. A panoramic helicopter flight provides an unforgettable aerial view of arguably the most famous stop on the F1 circuit, awash in the beautiful colors of sunset.

Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, underscores the exclusivity of Seven Seas’ high-octane expedition: “This one-of-a-kind, once-in-a-lifetime sailing aboard our newest ship will allow luxury travelers to immerse themselves in the world of motor racing and the rich heritage of Aston Martin Aramco Formula One team through fascinating experiences and perspectives, all the while enjoying the highest standards of personalized service, unlimited shore excursions and exquisite cuisine on board an all-inclusive, ultra-luxury Regent cruise.”
