The iconic trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will be paying an emotional farewell to The Grand Tour in their final TV special. The Grand Tour: One for the Road is dubbed the trio's final TV special together after 23 years of presenting, racing, arguing and shouting at each other across the world .

It's a chaotic dynamic that made BBC show Top Gear attract millions of fans every week and see the trio reach cult status in the UK. Following an altercation on the set of a Top Gear challenge, Jeremy Clarkson was sacked and Richard Hammond and James May joined him to form a new motoring series on Prime Video.

The main series between 2016 and 2019 saw the trio join the world in a tent and interviewed celebrities, reviewed cars and motoring challenges. The Grand Tour shifted to focusing on motoring challenge specials afterwards including Eurocrash, A Scandi Flick and A Massive Hunt.

One for the Road will be released on Friday, September 13 and see the presenters travel to Zimbabwe in three cars they have always wanted to own. Despite the presenters' departures, the series will continue on Prime Video with a new set of presenters.

But why are Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May leaving The Grand Tour?

Why is The Grand Tour ending?

The current format Grand Tour is ending because the trio simply believe it's time to finish. All three presenters have often spoken about quitting the motoring show on a high, rather than fizzling out or being replaced.

ichard Hammond told Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley on This Morning that they wanted to finish their show and working on-screen partnership on their own terms.

"We always wanted to land it on our own terms," said Hammond, before remarking on Top Gear's whirlwind ascent to iconic status.

"It took off, we started on Top Gear together 23 years ago and it went berserk," he laughed. "We didn't know it was gonna do that, so that was kinda out of our control – we always wanted to make sure that when we finally landed our partnership together it was on our terms, at a time and a place and in a manner of our choosing, and we have.

"But having done it and the film is out Friday... it's really weird . I can't get my head around it."

May, now 61, told The Sunday Times : “Must it end? It must. We’ve exhausted our take on the subject, and we always promised ourselves that we’d land our legacy safely instead of flying it into a cliff.

“And we’re old now. I set off as a puffy-faced youth with lustrous long dark hair that seemed to be permanently tousled by a warm zephyr, believing I’d landed a gig that might last a couple of years. I parked up grey, stooped, with a bad back, looking for my glasses so I could write this down.

“I regret none of it; none of those 20-plus years of beige food and bad living. It was tremendous. Thank you for watching.”

The gang will now focus on their own projects and TV shows. Jeremy Clarkson will continue to film his smash hit series Clarkson’s Farm, focus on Hawkstone brewery and manage his new pub The Farmer’s Dog.

James May will continue to present a series of travel documentaries for Prime Video as well as focus on his pub The Royal Oak in Wiltshire.

Richard Hammond continues to work on a number of new shows including Richard Hammond’s Workshop on Discovery+ and has a podcast Who We Are Now with his daughter Izzy.

The Grand Tour Season 2

Amazon Prime Video ’s automotive series “ The Grand Tour ” is not moving forward at the streamer — at least with its current hosts, former “Top Gear” trio Jeremy Clarkson , James May and Richard Hammond.

The presenter further confirmed the news in a post on his Instagram , writing: “Been a busy day. No more ‘Grand Tour’ after next year but a LOT more ‘Clarkson’s Farm.'”

Amazon Prime Video declined to comment on the matter.

“The Grand Tour” premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2016, following Clarkson, May and Hammond’s exit from the BBC series “Top Gear” after Clarkson was fired for punching a producer. The BBC revealed on Nov. 21 that “Top Gear” is also not returning “for the foreseeable future.” The announcement came after presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff was injured in an on-set accident in December, resulting in a pause in production on the show’s 34th season. Flintoff had been a presenter on the series since 2019, alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris.

“Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the U.K. show for the foreseeable future,” the BBC said in a statement. “The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy who have been at the heart of the show’s renaissance since 2019, and we’re excited about new projects being developed with each of them. We will have more to say in the near future on this. We know resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do.”

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed why it’s the end of the road for The Grand Tour . Clarkson said he and co-hosts, James May and Richard Hammond, decided to quit the Amazon Prime Video show after running out of steam.

In an interview with The Times of London , Clarkson said it was becoming increasingly difficult to conjure up outlandish adventures for the show and that the presenters were all showing their age.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May confirmed last November that they had filmed their final installments of  The Grand Tour . Two final episodes of the motoring series were recorded in Mauritania and Zimbabwe and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

Fozia Khan, Amazon Studios’ head of unscripted in the UK, said the brand could survive with another set of presenters. “It’s come to its natural end,” she said, adding that her team was “thinking about” how the show can live on.

Clarkson will continue to host Clarkson’s Farm for Amazon after the series has become the streamer’s highest-rated UK original. Filming on Season 4 is set to begin this year. Clarkson is also hosting more Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for ITV.

The Times interviewer Ed Potton wrote that he was told not to ask Clarkson about his reviled The Sun newspaper column about Meghan Markle. Clarkson wrote that he imagines the day Markle is paraded “naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.” The piece was retracted and Amazon made clear its fury at the article.

Asked if he feels under pressure to be controversial, Clarkson said: “No! I like being controversial. Some people who see a still pond find that peaceful, but I cannot resist throwing a stone in it.”

Clarkson, hammond and may explain why they're leaving the grand tour.

Mike Bartholomew headshot

We’re less than two weeks away from saying an emotional farewell to nearly 22 years of automotive TV hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, as the final episode of The Grand Tour (or the final episode hosted by them , at least), One For The Road, is launching on 13 September.

Now, in preparation for the episode, the trio, as well as long-time producer Andy Wilman, have gone into a bit more detail on why they felt the time was right to bring the show to a close.

The Grand Tour: One For The Road

Earlier this year, Clarkson spoke to The Times , explaining that filming the show is “immensely physical… when you’re unfit and fat and old, which I am.” He specifically mentioned camping in the Sahara Desert during the production of recent episode Sand Job as a particularly brutal experience:  “If you’re Bear Grylls you go to a hotel – there aren’t any hotels in the Sahara.”

Clarkson has now doubled down on that ahead of One For The Road, calling the show’s production “a young man’s game.” He also explains that the show is running out of new places to visit and things to do:

“We’ve done everything you can realistically do with a car, and the world has shrunk and that’s the tragedy. Years ago, we drove from Iraq into eastern Turkey into Syria, Damascus and Israel. We did the Crimea to Ukraine. You couldn’t do any of that now.”

The Grand Tour: One For The Road

Hammond, meanwhile, reflected on the process of bringing this iteration of the show, and the trio’s working relationship, to an end: “The way in which [Top Gear and The Grand Tour] took off was kind of beyond all of us. The only thing we could control was how and when and where we landed it.

“We wanted to say ‘thank you’ to the audience. This is the biggest thing to happen in my life ever. It changed my life, it affected my daughters’ lives, my whole family, everything. And that’s down to the audience.”

The Grand Tour: One For The Road

May chimed in on why the time felt right to end things: “I’ve always said that if it ends tomorrow, which it nearly did at one point, that I should just be grateful that I had the opportunity… But it didn’t end, it kept going. In the end, we got to the point where we said, ‘No, we must stop while we’re still vaguely ahead. We mustn't keep going until we embarrass ourselves.’”

Andy Wilman, who has acted as producer alongside the trio ever since Top Gear’s 2002 reboot, also reflected on why they’ve decided to end things now, explaining that things were nearly brought to an end after the three studio-based series of The Grand Tour:

The Grand Tour: One For The Road

“We came to an agreement with Prime Video where we’d just do the specials as we knew that the big cinematic adventures were what our fans loved… We could keep some kind of quality control in place by doing fewer things.

“We’re lucky that we’ve been able to control our destiny. We are now calling it a day on our own terms, and not many shows get to do that. Most of the time, you want to carry on, and you get told, ‘We don’t want you anymore.’”

Has The Grand Tour been cancelled? Future of Jeremy Clarkson’s show on Amazon

James May, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson in Eurocrash

Could Amazon ’s hit motoring show The Grand Tour be grinding to a halt?

Fans who have waited more than a year for today’s The Grand Tour: Eurocrash – which documents a typically eventful 1,400-mile journey across Eastern Europe involving a kidnapped mannequin and arrow-wielding horse riders – are worried this may be the last.

The series launched in 2016 after the BBC didn’t renew Jeremy Clarkson ’s Top Gear contract in 2015, following his attack on producer Oisin Tymon . His Top Gear co-presenters  James May  and Richard Hammond  decided to jump ship and joined The Grand Tour.

But following Clarkson’s vile comments in a newspaper column about Meghan Markle in January, in which the broadcaster said he dreamed of the Duchess being paraded through the streets and publicly shamed, Amazon reportedly ‘parted ways’ with him .

So what do we know about the future of The Grand Tour?

Has The Grand Tour been cancelled?

The good news for fans is that Clarkson has confirmed two more specials, according to The Sun , following the Eurocrash one-off.

The Grand Tour Eurocrash Trailer

Clarkson said: ‘For the next one – in fact, the next two – we’re back on slightly scary ground, doing things that we used to do when we were in our thirties and forties.

‘But now we’re in our fifties and sixties, so I’m slightly nervous about the next two.

‘Let’s just say we’re going back to Africa, and this one’s a hard one. It’s hard if you’re young and fit, but I’m really not fit. And I’m very fat. And I’m 63 now.’

Jeremy Clarkson

Sources previously told  Variety  that Amazon wouldn’t be working with the TV personality beyond the series of The Grand Tour (and Clarkson’s Farm ) that had already been commissioned. According to Variety, this would mean that a final The Grand Tour episode could be seen in 2025.

Speaking to radiotimes.com , James May speculated over the show’s ‘natural end’.

James May

He said: ‘I mean, some people have said we’ve been cancelled. But really we’re getting quite close to the end of our contract, but we didn’t really have any particular plans to keep going because we’re all really just getting a bit old.

‘It might be time to let someone else have a crack at it.’

So while it appears the show hasn’t necessarily been cancelled, there is no talk of renewing contracts at present.

Where can I watch The Grand Tour?

Eurocrash is a one-off special which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video from today.

The Future Of The Grand Tour Confirmed By Amazon Studios Boss

Amazon Prime has confirmed that The Grand Tour will not be coming to an end as fans begin to question the lifespan of the car show. On top of this, Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond , and James May have each started their own individual projects and businesses, too, only fuelling this determination to find out if The Grand Tour will be coming to an end or not.

Recently, the trio has traveled to Norway to film the latest episode . Driving a Subaru Impreza, a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, and an Audi RS4, we’re expecting an episode that revolves around the history of rallying – one of the most popular motorsports of yesteryear.

This won’t be the last, according to Amazon Studios boss Georgia Brown, who has confirmed that The Grand Tour will continue:

“The second thing that hasn’t changed at all since [we launched] in 2018,  is we’re still sending three old blokes around the world playing with cars and our customers just love it. “So we will keep doing it, as long as there is a demand for it!”

The latest episode of The Grand Tour – Carnage a Trois – followed Clarkson, Hammond, and May as they drove French cars across the UK and explored the history of the connection between France and motoring. Fans loved the episode, and while they’re disappointed that there are very few episodes per year, they were happy to see the show return despite the pandemic.

Richard Hammond talked to the Radio Times about another episode they have been planning since traveling through Norway:

“We’ve already filmed one – we’re not long back from that,” he said referencing the Arctic Circle special. “We’re ready to go off and do another, and they are huge missions to go and do,” he said.

The Grand Tour's James May clarifies cancellation rumours

"No one has told us to go away."

The Grand Tour star James May has weighed in on the rumours of the show's cancellation.

May and his two co-hosts are coming to the end of their current contracts with Prime Video , which saw them switch to making one-off specials rather than traditional series of the motoring show.

Recently, there have been rumblings that the streaming giant has decided not to make more of The Grand Tour or spin-off show Clarkson's Farm beyond the end of their contracts in 2024.

May has responded in a chat with Radio Times , where he explained the trio "didn't really have any particular plans to keep going" beyond their current deal anyway.

"We're all really just getting a bit old. It might be time to let someone else have a crack at it," he said.

The presenter quickly clarified that even if The Grand Tour goes away, he could continue making his spin-off James May: Our Man in… — and indeed will return to the show in 2024 for a series set in India.

"It doesn't mean we're going to stop making TV. We might still make our individual things farming or science or mending cars or whatever it is we get up to," he said.

"But I don't know, to be honest. No one has told us to go away. It's reaching its natural end, like parties do. There comes a point at 4am when it is over."

The presenter also has a culinary show on Prime Video called James May: Oh Cook , where he learns to prepare some of his favourite foods from around the world. The second series premiered last month, featuring topics such as 'French Classics' and '70s Dinner Party'.

The Grand Tour is available to stream in both the US and UK on Prime Video .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Gets Exciting Filming Update From Kirk Actor

A young henry cavill stole the show in this 17-year-old historical drama, from's biggest mystery has been lingering way too long for season 3 to ignore it.

The Grand Tour isn't going to be as grand as hoped for. Variety reported back in January that due to the latest controversy surrounding Jeremy Clarkson, Prime Video would be cancelling both his shows after their next seasons. That allegedly means the end of The Grand Tour after Season 6 -- and after the show never quite captured the same hype that Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May attained as the hosts of Top Gear . While Clarkson's behavior was reprehensible and the fate of his series should not overshadow that, another consequence is the abrupt stop to decades of TV.

What Hammond, Clarkson and May accomplished was nothing short of stellar. They turned a respectable but workmanlike BBC motoring show into a worldwide sensation. There were multiple international versions, plus Top Gear merchandise and a Top Gear arena tour. And when that came to an end at the BBC after a different Clarkson controversy in 2015, shocked fans were sated by the idea that the three presenters and executive producer Andy Wilman would be making The Grand Tour . Now with The Grand Tour Season 6 possibly the end, it's like watching a favorite band break up.

The Grand Tour Season 6 Marks the End of an Era

While Amazon has not officially confirmed The Grand Tour 's cancellation after Season 6, it has also not denied the Variety report. If the news is correct and the streamer does terminate its relationship with Jeremy Clarkson, it's near certainly the end of an era. The Grand Tour premiered in November 2016 because Hammond, May and Wilman wanted to continue working with Clarkson rather than stay on Top Gear without him. Just over six years later, there's no indication of that changing. Even though Hammond and May each have individual shows with Amazon, they've also always had their group project. And while history could repeat itself, any other streamer is likely to be a little warier after Clarkson has been sacked from not one but two platforms, for good reason.

But looking strictly at the work he produced, Top Gear and later The Grand Tour both defied any kind of convention. Clarkson, Hammond and May's Top Gear adventures were the stuff viewers could only dream of. Ruin a drivetime radio show? Why not. Try and fail to make some amphibious cars -- twice? At least it was entertaining. Turn one of the most ridiculous cars in the world into a space shuttle? Sure, and it almost worked. What made them superstars weren't the fast cars, and the celebrity segments were the most boring part of the show. Fans became fans because Clarkson, Hammond and May had an incredible rapport. They got in over their heads together, failed a lot and only complained slightly because they were too busy making fun of each other.

RELATED: John Cleese Addresses Claims That His Fawlty Towers Reboot Will Be 'Anti-Woke'

Jeremy Clarkson Leaving The Grand Tour May Be Just the Beginning

The current incarnation of Top Gear has succeeded because it finally found three hosts with the same bromance. Paddy McGuinness, Chris Harris and Freddie Flintoff are likewise having the time of their lives. Paddy literally made a monster food truck while Freddie brought back the 1970s cop show vibe . And in some ways, their Top Gear has surpassed Clarkson, Hammond and May because they've brought their own devil-may-care optimism to the format. They've made it theirs like no one else before.

Conversely, The Grand Tour went through its growing pains, and it wasn't quite as successful, but it was still fun. The scripted bits were more obvious, and instead of episodes there were just a series of specials, but that was okay because it eliminated the boring parts. It became like going on adventures with old friends instead of new ones. And without all three of the hosts, the way forward becomes unclear. Amazon is still in business with James May, having ordered Our Man in India just weeks after the Variety report, which proves Prime Video still wants content from him. Presumably that also applies to Richard Hammond, who had The Great Escapists on the platform in 2021. But will their solo projects be as financially successful for Amazon as The Grand Tour , which still has a 92 percent Rotten Tomatoes audience rating? Or will they, too, end up disappearing -- either due to the business of TV or the stars moving on to other things?

It's understandable that Amazon wants to part ways with Jeremy Clarkson, given his history of controversies. Yet it's also worth acknowledging that he, Hammond and May have brought joy to millions of viewers around the world and made car enthusiasts out of people who might never have been otherwise. To lose that after just six seasons will be bringing to a close something special when fans once believed The Grand Tour would go on seemingly forever.

The Grand Tour is coming to an end after an action-packed run, with the final special One for the Road taking Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond to Zimbabwe.

The trio have picked out cars that they've always dreamed of owning – those being a Lancia Montecarlo, a Ford Capri 3-litre, and a Triumph Stag – to traverse the terrain, which takes them to a "strangely familiar" island.

Indeed, viewers who have been following the motoring enthusiasts since their Top Gear days may also recognise their final destination, which puts a fitting bow on more than two decades of outrageous adventures.

Clarkson said that "the whole trip" was poignant for the presenting team, including hours of "reminiscing" – much of which had to be cut for time – although the broadcaster wasn't overly misty-eyed by the end of the shoot.

"I was surprisingly unemotional in a weird way because I can see James and Hammond any time I want to, they’re only a phone call away, and I’m sure we will," he told press.

He also acknowledged that his other Prime Video hit, Clarkson's Farm , helped soften the blow of ending The Grand Tour as the two productions share a number of the same crew members.

Speaking of the location, Clarkson said: "I love deserts, so I've always wanted to do the Sahara, but it's difficult to go there; you can't go to Mali or Libya or Algeria or Chad. You can't go to the top of Nigeria.

"And then it was really a question of finding the most inappropriate cars for trans-Sahara travel, and I think we did a pretty good job on that."

Is there a trailer for The Grand Tour: One for the Road?

Yes! The trailer was unveiled ahead of the series release, and features footage from the special as it marks the end for the trio on screen after 22 years.

At the end of the teaser, Clarkson says: "So, for the last time - here we go."
