Hakone Sightseeing Cruise by Cha (CC BY 3.0)

Hakone Sightseeing Cruise is a sightseeing cruise across Lake Ashi in Hakone Japan. There are currently 3 routes that cross the lake. The longest route takes approximately 30 min. The "Key" reason most people take the cruise is to get a good look or "photo" of Mt. Fuji in the background and or the Autumn colors in the fall. The ships themselves are decorated as old time Pirate ships (just "decorated" only... they are modern ships). On weekends and during Japanese holidays the ships can get quite packed... and possibly hard to find a good position (unless you quickly get a spot when you get on). The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise serves the 3 ports of Togendai-ko, Hakonemachi-ko, and Motohakone-ko on Lake Ashi.

Hakone Lake Ashi Cruise: Ultimate guide for the perfect trip

The Hakone Lake Ashi Cruise is one of the best ways to enjoy Lake Ashi and its surrounding beauty. That beauty, of course, includes Mount Fuji!

It’s part of the Hakone Loop – which covers most of the must-see spots in the Fuji-Hakone National Park and uses no less than five different types of transportation.

But on a Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, you get to cruise Lake Ashi on a pirate ship! And if you’re lucky, you might see Mount Fuji in all its glory. Unfortunately for us, we didn’t see the volcano, as the northern end of the lake was all in clouds.

But we still enjoyed the views from the cruise.

What is the Hakone Lake Ashi Cruise?

departing on a sightseeing cruise lake ashi japan hakone

Hakone Lake Ashi Cruise is a short cruise that runs on Lake Ashi, which is one of the Fuji Five lakes. It’s 25 to 40 minutes long, depending on which port you board the ship.

You go on this “cruise” to get from one end of the lake to another, enjoying the unique views from the water. On clear days, you can see the snowy top of Mount Fuji from the boats. And if you find a good spot on the boat, you get to see the Hakone-jinja shrine’s floating torii together with the Queen Fuji.

Companies running the Hakone Cruises

Two companies run cruises on Lake Ashi: The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise and the Hakone Yuransen.

The one really worth it is the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise boats, and that’s for more than one reason. The first and main one is, the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise is included in the Hakone FreePass . And second, it’s Pirate ships!

So if you’re wondering which Hakone boat to choose, let me suggest the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise boats.

Hakone Pirate ships

lake ashi sightseeing cruise pirate ship onboard hakone japan

Three different Hakone Sightseeing boats look like the Pirate ships don’t just look like pirate ships. The details on those ships are honestly incredible. The colours, the goddesses on bows, and of course, the interior.

The viewing area is quite big so a lot of people can enjoy the views. If you like to do some photography, though, make sure to get a spot by the railings so that you’re not blocked.

Even inside, there’s the subtle – or not-so-subtle – luxury. On at least one of the ship’s walls have ōkawakumiko latticework and other decorative elements.  For an extra fee, you can choose the First class cabin or the “Special room”. There are limited tickets available so you get to enjoy the extra luxury without the crowds.

I enjoyed the economy room – for me, it seemed good enough. It’s like a fancy version of a normal ferry with more comfortable seats. And there are even different pirate “objects” and 3d art inside the ship!

What I didn’t enjoy as much was the outside – it was really cold, as we were surprised by snow in Hakone . I hadn’t packed enough warm things with me, unfortunately, because it was supposed to be rather warm.

The Pirate ships can even be chartered, if you feel like having a special event in a unique setting.

Different ports on Lake Ashi

view of lake Ashi iwth traditional ships

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise boats run from Togendai Port to Hakone Machi Port to Moto-Hakone Port and back to Togendai Port . If you want to do a Hakone Loop like we did, you’d be taking the Pirate ship from the Togendai port to Moto-Hakone.

At the Togendai Port, which is at the north of the lake, you can enjoy several restaurants. This is the port you arrive at if you’re taking the Hakone Ropeway from Owakudani station. If you’re doing the traditional Hakone circle, you’ll be boarding the Pirate ship here to go to the Hakone Mochi port. You can go to Moto-Hakone, too, as the ports are only 20 minutes’ walk apart.

The Hakone Machi port has some interesting things to see. The most famous are probably the Hakone Checkpoint and the entrance to the Old Tokkaido Highway. The Hakone Checkpoint Exhibition Hall and Hakone Ekiden Museum are right by the Hakone Mochi port, too.

By Moto-Hakone, which is just a tiny bit further, you’ll find the Hakone Shrine with the famous Torii gate, the Narukawa art museum, as well as a number of shops and restaurants. One of the best-preserved parts of the old Tokkaido highway is here, too.

Where to get tickets for the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise

lake ashi sightseeing cruise pirate ship hakone japan in the port

If you’re doing the Hakone Loop or are planning to take other public transport in the area, the best idea is to get the Hakone FreePass . That way, you have the boat cruise included in the ticket – unlimited times during the validity of the ticket.

If you wish, tickets for the Hakone sightseeing cruises can be bought separately, too. You can do it at the Sightseeing cruise/ropeway platform. You can pay for the tickets by card as well, not just cash.

If you’d like to use the “first-class” room, you need to purchase an upgrade – that’s whether you’re buying tickets for the cruise separately or using the Hakone Freepass.

Hakone Lake Cruise: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, I think the Hakone lake Ashi cruise is worth it. It’s quite a special experience, and both the boats and the views are magnificent.

You can get on the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise boat with your Hakone FreePass. If you don’t have the Freepass, check this website for up-to-date prices.

The boat ride lasts 25 to 40 minutes. The trip from Motohakone port to Tōgendai takes around 25 minutes and Tōgendai port to Hakone-machi takes around 25 minutes, too.

The best way is to do the Hakone Loop , so take Cablecar from Gora to Sounzan and the Hakone ropeway from Sounzan to Owakudani. Afterwards, take the Hakone ropeway from Owakudani to Togendai.

You can easily do the Hakone Loop in a day, even as a day trip from Tokyo . Although we do recommend staying two nights in a Ryokan in the Hakone area , as that’s an experience that should be on your Japan bucket list.

arriving on a sightseeing cruise lake ashi japan hakone

Wrap up: Hakone Sightseeing Cruise

Hakone Lake Ashi cruises are quite an interesting experience. You get to enjoy going on a pirate ship – it’s quite unique to ride a pirate ship on a crater lake in Japan.

If you were wondering if to do it or not, I definitely recommend including this boat ride in your Japan itinerary !

Avast Ye! Climb aboard Hakone’s Pirate Ships (a.k.a the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise)

Be ye brave enough to sail Japanese waters? Until One Piece , pirates and Japan were two words that rarely went together. However, to everyone’s delight, the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise has found another way to merge them together. Let’s give them a round of applause. Due to their efforts, visitors can climb aboard one of Hakone’s pirate ships, enjoy a stately sightseeing cruise around Lake Ashinoko, and maybe even find some treasure…

Lake Ashinoko is home to Hakone's pirate ships, courtesy of the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise

What? Where?

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise rules the waters of Hakone’s Lake Ashinoko. Furthermore, it offers dreamy, lake-side views of Mt. Fuji and Hakone Shrine. The area itself is a notable tourist hotspot and is especially popular amongst those visiting Tokyo. Hakone is renowned for its hot springs , volcanic valley, ropeway, and shrines . In particular, the area’s volcanic valley, Owakundai, is well-known for its black eggs, which are carefully boiled in its volcanic waters. If you can, definitely try one. They’re good luck and taste, not unsurprisingly, like a slightly smoky egg.

As visitors descend the ropeway from Owakundai toward Lake Ashinoko, many are baffled by the sudden appearance of Hakone’s pirate ships. Initially, they are a very confusing sight. However, the ships are beautiful examples of 18th-century design and a great opportunity for some swashbuckling fun. In total, the ships dock at three ports. The recommended starting port is Motohakone-ko, which is close to the stately Hakone Shrine. From there, the ships dock at Todengai-ko, which is close to the volcanic valley . Finally, the ships dock at Hakonemachi-ko, which is a less exciting, general access point close to Hakone City.

The Origins of Hakone’s Pirate Ships

Surprisingly, the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise owes its creation, in part, to Disneyland . Allow me to set the scene. It was the 1960s. As Japan’s economy started to pick up, so too did interest in new leisure activities. One fateful day, the company president embarked on a trip to Disneyland . Reportedly, he was inspired by the company’s creativity and success. After taking some time to think things over, he embarked on a new adventure: Western-style pirate ship cruises. Despite initial apprehension, the ships were a huge hit, especially among children. These days, nearly 2 million people board the ships each year.

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise docks at three separate ports

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise: The Fleet

In total, the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise maintains a fleet of three ships: a French flagship, a British battleship, and a luxury cruiser. Shockingly, each of them can hold up to 500 people. The Royal II , with its vivid red hull, is a reproduction of an 18th-century French flagship. Amongst its classical French décor, guests can seek out the ship’s trusty, wooden captain for a photo-op . Meanwhile, the Victory is a model of the infamous HMS Victory , an 18th-century British warship. The original was a pivotal participant in many key sea-faring battles. Its black and gold hull hides an intriguing secret: there be treasure on board. Finally, the Queen Ashinoko offers the best in sea-worthy refinement. It’s the most luxurious of the ships, and its most easily recognizable for its heavy use of gold accenting on its hull.

Whichever ship you should choose, the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise is a not-to-be-missed adventure. It’s a great way to traverse the area, take in its top sights , and have a ton of fun to boot.

The Victory at Togendai-ko stop

Hakone Sightseeing Cruising

Sail Lake Ashi in a replica war ship

Christopher Harley

When in the Hakone region of Kanagawa, there are many places to go and many things to do. All of these things, on a clear day (a rarity in the summer), will afford you a great view of the icon of Japan, Mt. Fuji.

Taking a sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖, Ashi-no-ko  in Japanese), is one of the best ways to see the area and learn a bit about the lake itself.

The boats used are unique themselves and are part of the charm of the trip too. There are three boats in the fleet and they are all life-size replicas of old man-o-war ships. Named Victory, Royal and Vasa, these ships make regularly scheduled round trips of the lake departing approximately every 40-50 minutes from one of three locations. It is possible to take the cruise one-way or round-trip.

I settled on the round-trip option on my recent trip and started the journey at Togendai-ko station at the end of the Hakone Ropeway.

Onboard, most people head immediately up to the top decks for the best views, thus those areas are always quite crowded. For those that want to stay out of the sun and wind, there are a couple of lower level rooms with benches to sit down on that offer similar views, just a little limiting, one of these being a first class cabin that requires an additional fee to enter. The advantage of staying in one of these rooms is that you are able to listen to some pre-recorded information about things you can see around the lake. These announcements are made in both Japanese and English and can be useful in learning about local landmarks such as Hakone Shrine and its torii gate located in the water.

Up on the top deck, you are afforded a 360 degree view of the lake and Hakone area. And if you are lucky, you will be able to get your picture taken with a crew member dressed up in an authentic period costume.

The first stop after Togendai-ko is Hakonemachi-ko and the Hakone Checkpoint as well as some hotels, and places to rent small pleasure craft to take out on the lake (such as paddle boats in a swan shape, or canoe-like boats).

The third stop is Motohakone-ko, which is the closest to Hakone Shrine, but also passes by the location of the former Hakone Castle.

The trip back to Togendai-ko is much like the ride out except seeing the same places again can actually help you notice things you might have missed the first time.

The entire round-trip will take approximately 55 minutes and is a must to do on your trip to Hakone. Another option is to take your time, get off at some of the stops for some sightseeing, making your way back gradually.

You’ll be glad you did.

Hakone ashinoko boat cruise.

A leisurely catamaran cruise with fun activities and entertainment for sailors of all ages

The spacious upper deck of the Hakone Ashinoko Boat Cruise’s catamaran offers uninterrupted views of Mount Fuji and the forest around Lake Ashinoko. It is a relaxing way to sightsee in Hakone, leaving road traffic and crowded transportation behind.

Children will enjoy collecting stamps at the four different ports where the boat stops, while babies and toddlers can play safely in the crawl room—a dedicated children’s area with padded flooring and lots of soft toys.

Special events on the boat include musical performances and night cruises, and you can view fireworks from the boat during the five-day Hakone Ashinoko Summer Festival.

Lake Ashinoko

hakone sightseeing cruise cost

Lake Ashinoko (m, Ashinoko) was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone after the volcano's last eruption 3000 years ago. Today, the lake with Mount Fuji in the background is the symbol of Hakone . The lake's shores are mostly undeveloped except for small towns in the east and north and a couple of lakeside resort hotels.

The best views of the lake in combination with Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from Moto-Hakone (a few steps south from the sightseeing boat pier), from the Hakone Detached Palace Garden and from the sightseeing boats cruising the lake.

hakone sightseeing cruise cost

Note however, that clouds and poor visibility often block the view of Mount Fuji , and you have to consider yourself lucky if you get a clear view of the mountain. Visibility tends to be better during the colder seasons of the year than in summer, and in the early morning and late afternoon hours.

Two companies, Hakone Sightseeing Boats and Hakone Pleasure Cruise, operate boats from Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi at the lake's southern shores to Togendai at the lake's northern end (25-40 minutes, 1200 yen one way) and Hakone-en at the eastern shore (15-30 minutes, 1000 yen one way). The Hakone Free Pass is valid on the pirate ship-shaped Hakone Sightseeing Boats but not on the Hakone Pleasure Cruises to/from Hakone-en.

A Complete Guide to Hakone, Japan

A Complete Guide to Hakone, Japan

There are so many unique and wonderful things to do in Hakone, which makes it one of my favourite regions in Japan!  It’s home to many onsen hotels and some of the country’s most spectacular scenery.

We visited Japan in Autumn (twice), which was a particularly special time of year and far less crowded. Whether it’s fall colours you’re looking for, or perhaps it’s beautiful Cherry Blossoms. Hakone is a beautiful place to visit year-round and a must-do place to add to your Japan itinerary, especially if it’s your first time in Japan .

Many people choose to do a Hakone day trip from Tokyo , however, I highly recommend extending your itinerary and spending at least one night, or two.

When we were planning a trip to Japan , we opted to spend 14 days in Japan, so that was enough time to spend two nights in Hakone before continuing to Kyoto for 2 days . However, if you only have 7 days to spend in Japan in total, then perhaps 1 night in Hakone is ample time.

An overnight trip allows extra time to really explore the region and experience traditional Japanese hospitality while staying at a beautiful Ryokan hotel.

In saying that, if you’re planning to only do a day trip, then please read on, as many of the things to do in this Hakone travel guide can be experienced in one day.

Useful Resources for Hakone

Here are a few quick links to useful resources for your visit:

  • Book your Japan Rail Pass online before arriving in Japan. Note: the Japan Rail Pass cannot be purchased after arriving in the country.
  • It’s handy to have a local sim card or mobile WiFi device to help using Google Maps to navigate your way around Japan. Pre-purchase a Japanese sim card here . If you travel overseas regularly, we use and recommend Skyroam as it can be used in 130+ destinations worldwide, including Japan!
  • Purchase your tickets for the Hakone Kamakura 3-Day Pass here . This covers most public transport options around Hakone.
  • Book your accommodation in Hakone at least 4 months in advance during high season, as rooms book out quickly. We recommend booking through Agoda or Booking.com , as they have the most comprehensive inventory within Japan.

How to Get to Hakone

How to get to hakone by train.

Trains in Japan are fast, efficient and get you to your destination on time, nearly every time! However, there are two train lines that operate services from Tokyo to Hakone. Which one you take will depend on the station you’re departing from, and whether or not you wish to use the Japan Rail Pass:

Departing From Shinjuku Station:

The ‘Romance Car’ departs from Shinjuku several times per day and takes you to Hakone-Yumoto station. If you’re planning a day trip, the Romance car is the best way to get there and back. You can purchase tickets for the ‘Romance Car’ at the Odakyu station office. Please note: this train is serviced by Odakyu, not Japan Rail so you cannot use your Japan Rail Pass on this train.

Once you arrive at Hakone-Yumoto station, you’ll need to change trains onto the Hakone Tozan Railway line, which will take you to the town of Gora and several other towns within the region. Transport from Hakone-Yumoto station and within the region is covered by a separate ticket. Pre-purchase a Hakone Kamakura Pass online here  (formerly called the Hakone Free Pass) before you arrive, which covers all trains, buses, boats, and ropeways within the Hakone and Kamakura regions. This pass also includes free or discounted entry to the many Hakone attractions for up to 3-days.

Left to right from the top: Scenic vistas of Mount Hakone in the Fall; A train arrives at Gora Station.

From Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station:

If you have a Japan Rail Pass and you wish to use it to get to Hakone, then you’ll need to catch the Shinkansen train (bullet train) on the Tokaido Line from Tokyo or Shinagawa stations to Odawara. Once in Odawara, you’ll need to change onto the Hakone Tozan Line for the rest of the journey.

The train from Odawara station is covered by a separate ticket. We recommend you pre-purchase a discounted Hakone Kamakura Pass online here (formerly called the Hakone Free Pass) before you arrive, which covers all transport from Odawara station to Hakone-Yumoto station and within the Hakone and Kamakura regions, including trains, buses, boats, and ropeways. This pass also includes entrance to many of the attractions around Hakone for up to 3-days.

Pro Tip:  If you plan to travel around Japan by Japan Rail (and trust me this is the best way), you MUST pre-purchase your Japan Rail Pass before arriving in the country. You cannot purchase a Japan Rail Pass after you arrive. Click here to purchase your Japan Rail Pass online at least 2 weeks before you arrive. I also recommend purchasing the Hakone Kamakura Pass as this includes most transport services around Hakone. Click here to purchase the Hakone Kamakura Pass online in advance. You can also visit Kamakura using the same pass!

How to Get to Hakone by Car

If you plan to rent a car and drive, there are a few things to note. In Japan, they drive on the left side. The quality of the roads is not great, due to the amount of seismic activity in Japan, and there are many toll roads around Tokyo. Familiarise yourself with the road signs, but most are written in Japanese and English. You can read more tips about driving in Japan here . Where to Stay in Hakone

It can be difficult trying to choose where to stay in Hakone, as it is a large area. There are quite a few towns dotted around the mountain with many hotels and guesthouses to choose from. But if you’re looking to stay in one of the best hotels in Hakone, then check out the town of Gora. The majority of the region’s best ryokans and places to stay in Hakone are centered around this town, as are many of the attractions and things to do in Hakone. Most hotels in Hakone are traditional Japanese ryokan-style hotels and many feature their own private onsen.

Staying Around Gora

Here’s our pick of the best affordable luxury hotels and ryokans in Gora:

Hakone Gora Byakudan – this hotel with private onsen is arguably the best place to stay in Hakone (pictured above). A modern style Japanese ryokan, with open fireplace and a spectacular view over the valley. We had our own private onsen right on our balcony and were treated to incredible kaiseki meals each evening.

Gora Kadan – Another stunning and popular 5-star ryokan-style hotel in Hakone with private onsen and traditional Japanese kaiseki meals. Gora Kadan is only 5-minutes’ walk from Gora station.

Hakone Kowakien Tenyu – A large hotel featuring mountain views with private onsen baths, and Japanese or Western-style rooms and meals.

Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora – this modern hotel with Japanese and Western-style rooms is a brand new addition to the list of great places to stay in Hakone.

Other Hotels in Hakone

While Gora is (in my opinion) offers the best places to stay in Hakone, here are some other great affordable luxury hotels around other towns in Hakone, including the main tourist village, Hakone-Yumoto:

Hakone Ashinoko Hanaori – A beautiful hotel on the shores of Lake Ashinoko, with a terrace featuring lake views.

Odakyu Hotel de Yama – A grand old hotel with lake views, natural hot spring baths surrounded by a beautiful Japanese garden, and a karaoke room!

Hakone Hisui – A beautiful ryokan hotel with kaiseki meals, situated close to the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands.

Kinnotake Sengokuhara – A hidden away, adults-only Japanese ryokan hotel with western bedding and traditional Japanese meals served in the privacy of your room.

Kinnotake Tonosawa – A luxury adults only Japanese-style hotel with private onsen and traditional Japanese meals. This hotel is conveniently located only 10 minutes bus ride from Hakone-Yumoto station.

Pro Tip:  Most of the best hotels in Hakone, including the ones listed above include full-board (breakfast and dinner) or half-board (breakfast only). Many offer kaiseki-style meals, which is a traditional multi-course Japanese tasting menu – an experience in itself! While there are several (really good) dining options around Hakone-Yumoto station, there are limited options for dinner in many of the other villages and towns. I would recommend going for a full-board option for the complete Japanese ryokan experience.

Things to do in Hakone

There are so many things to do in Hakone. As I mentioned earlier, many people opt for a Hakone day trip, but after reading the following list, I’m sure you’ll understand why it’s best to plan a Hakone itinerary that lasts 2 or 3 days instead.

Hakone Open-Air Museum

We started our Hakone day trip at the Hakone Open Air Museum, which features one of the most extensive Picasso exhibits and is an absolute must-do activity to add to your Hakone itinerary. This was one of my most favourite things to do in Hakone! The museum is open year-round from 9 am to 5 pm.

After an hour or two wandering around the beautiful gardens and admiring over 150 sculptures, continue your Hakone itinerary by hopping on a train at the nearby station and head to Gora station.

Witness Mount Hakone’s Seismic Activity at Owakudani

At Gora station, change onto the Tozan Cable Car and then continue onto the Hakone Ropeway, which takes you up the top of Mount Hakone, an active volcano. Alight at Owakudani station, where you’ll experience one of the most unique things to do in Hakone, or indeed the whole of Japan. Watch as volcanic gases rise from the earth and taste black eggs, that have been cooked in the natural hot springs, fed directly from the mountain. Afterward, hop back on the ropeway and continue down-hill to Lake Ashi.

Lake Ashi Cruise

From Togendai station, you get off the ropeway and board a large pirate ship. The ship takes you on a 30-minute sightseeing cruise across Lake Ashinoko (Lake Ashi) to Moto-Hakone. On a clear day, it’s possible to see Mount Fuji on the horizon from the lake.

Hakone Shrine

On the shores of Lake Ashinoko, at the foot of the Hakone Shrine, stands an enormous orange Torii Gate. You’ve probably seen this shrine on Instagram and it is perhaps one of the things that attracted you to this region. This is a great spot and you’ll have to join the lineup of tourists waiting for a photo opportunity. Visiting the shrine is one of the few free things to do in Hakone! There is also plenty of great hiking trails around mountains near the Hakone Shrine if your itinerary allows the time to take advantage of this.

Mishima Skywalk

This attraction is a little further afield than most of the other things to do in Hakone and is perhaps only achievable on an extended itinerary of 2 days or more. But the Skywalk and 300 metre-long zipline is a lot of fun and well worth it.

Onsen Spa Experience

After an action-packed day trip exploring all the amazing things to do in Hakone, there’s nothing better than to soak in the therapeutic benefits of naturally-fed thermal springs. If you decide to stay in any of the hotels listed above, they all have onsen available onsite. Some even have private onsen, so you don’t have to bath naked with total strangers. However, if you choose to stay somewhere that doesn’t have an onsen, the Kowaki-en Yunessun Hot Spring Theme Park is one of the best hot springs in Hakone that you can also visit on a day trip. Show your Hakone Kamakura Pass  at the ticket office to receive a discount.

Hakone-Yumoto Town

The train journey to and from Gora requires you to change trains at Hakone-Yumoto station. If you have a few extra hours on your way to/from Gora, it’s well worth taking a wander around the town and trying the array of Japanese delicacies sold on the street. There are plenty of luggage storage lockers available at the station.

Pro Tip:  The Hakone Kamakura Pass is a worthwhile purchase if you plan to extend your Hakone itinerary to 2 days or more. It includes transport on all Odakyu lines (expect the Romance Car), plus all trains, buses, boats, cable cars and ropeways around the Hakone and Kamakura regions for up to 3 days. It also offers free or discounted entry to many of the attractions listed above and more. Click here to purchase the Hakone Kamakura Pass online  in advance. You can also combine your Hakone itinerary with a visit to Kamakura using the same pass!

I should mention that this is certainly not an exhaustive list of all the things to do in Hakone. There is actually so much more to see and do. If you were to do a google search of ‘things to do in Hakone’, you’ll learn that there are also many hikes, waterfalls, volcanos and Mount Fuji viewing spots, and so much more. You could easily extend your Hakone itinerary to 2 days or longer!

Hakone Wrap Up

There are so many things to see and do in Hakone. It is truly an amazing region to visit in Japan. And, being so close to Tokyo, it’s very easy to plan a Hakone day trip or extend your itinerary to 2 or 3 days and stay in a beautiful Ryokan hotel, as we did. You can also add a visit to Hakone to your Japan itinerary while travelling between Tokyo and Kyoto .

I definitely plan to go to Japan and Hakone would be on my itinerary, so this guide is very handy. I will take your advice and stay 2 or 3 days preferably.

November 2, 2019 at 7:30 am

Sounds great. You’ll get to see so much more in a few days. It will give you some time to relax in an Onsen as well!

Thanks for such an interesting and informative post! Honestly had never heard of Hakone before now but you’ve definitely put in on my radar ?

November 2, 2019 at 7:26 am

Glad to hear it. It’s not well known to Westerners but it’s very popular on the weekends as the Japanese escape from Tokyo. I read about it in an airline onboard magazine before I went and it sounded amazing.

Funny, I have been to Japan three times now and have yet to go to Hakone. I was about to go last November but couldn’t in the end. Your photos are making me want to book a plane ticket right now. Japan is definitely my favourite country.

November 2, 2019 at 7:24 am

I could go back to Japan over and over again. I hope you get to Hakone soon. It’s beautiful in Autumn! Thanks for your compliment on my photos ?

November 7, 2019 at 6:14 am

Thanks Amanda, I have Hakone on our itinerary and plan to spend two nights there but was really questioning it with two kids!!! would there be enough to do? it was great reading your article. It has really inspired me and now I am really excited about visiting there. Thanks so much.

November 7, 2019 at 10:52 pm

Oh yes, the kids would love it. The Onsen theme park that I mentioned in the post would be a good idea for them. Try and find some accommodation near the theme park in Gora. It’s pretty central. There was a hotel right across the road but I don’t remember the name. I think they would also enjoy the Ropeway and the Open Air Museum!

The black eggs cooked in thermal spring water IS SO COOL. I’ve never heard/seen something like that before. I visited Japan in February for two weeks on business, I wish I had more time to explore the country rather than work. Your photos are so beautiful.

November 26, 2019 at 10:07 am

Thank you Chelsea! Everything about Hakone was so unique. I’ve never seen the black eggs either. It actually made the Atlas Obscura list of weird things around the world! I hope this article has given you a reason to visit Japan again, for a holiday next time!

We are sorry we missed this region when we visited Japan. And we missed cherry blossoms too! Good thing we found so many other great treats. Thanks for providing train information. I would definitely want to try the Shinkansen bullet train. Good to know that Gora is a good base to use to explore the area. And that we should book our accommodations with full a board meal plan. The Open Air Museum would be a great reason for us to visit Hakone. But seeing an active volcano would be right up there on my list too. I may have to try one or more of the thermal spas to find the perfect one. Looks like it is time to return to Japan!

November 26, 2019 at 2:33 pm

Hi Linda, sounds like you definitely have to return 🙂 let me know if you need any more advice before you do!

Hi Indrani, I’m glad you found the tips useful. It was pretty cool to see the volcano (Owakudani) up close. Let me know if you have any questions for planning your trip!

November 27, 2019 at 10:02 pm

I have been to Japan on a work-related trip and had limited time to explore back then. I plan to go back next year and will consider Hakone in my itinerary. You’ve got me interested in the Open Air Museum and ahmmm…those black eggs! haha!

January 6, 2020 at 2:33 am

I’m glad to hear it. Hakone is such a beautiful place to explore, and so close to Tokyo!
