The Roll Design Long Travel ATV A-Arms for the YAMAHA YFZ450R feature the notoriously strong gull wing design mated with the over-sized 4130 chromoly construction. The inboard pivots use PFTE composite-lined bearings with precision-ground pivot pins crafted from hardened steel. The upper control arms feature fully-adjustable caster and camber through the use of its three-piece, high-misalignment design. These misalignment spacers are the best in the business, manufactured from 17-4 stainless steel. This is the very same stainless steel used in mission critical aerospace and nuclear reactor applications for superior strength and corrosion resistance. The replaceable rod ends are lined with long-wearing Teflon. The top and bottom arms are equipped with high-angle ball joints that are sealed and replaceable. These ball joints are en-captured in the arms to eliminate any potential sheer point, ultimately increasing reliability.

Do I really need long travel?

  • Add to quote

Over the weekend I went riding I have an 05 yfz with a yz needle, quickshot 3,hot cams stage 3,hot rod crank, wiesco piston, fmf 4.1, and have been dyno tuned... so I am making plenty of power. But I went to silver lake and the sand got a little ruff with all the cars out on it and it beat the crap out of me. I have Renthal bars and a houser +1 stem and an 06 seat so that helped alot but have 0 suspention mods. Not even a steering stabilizer. My question is is there a big diffrence between front elka shocks and are they worth the money? Or should I get my stock ones re built? I do not think I need to go long travel to get a better suspention. Or do I? If anyone has any stock length elka shocks laying around I'll pick them up or a steering stabilizer

yfz450 long travel shocks

I think you would notice a major difference with a MX long travel setup. I would go Fox, Moto Woz or PEP.

yfz450 long travel shocks

If your planning on some MX then I recommend Walsh/Fox or Walsh/PEP PB1's, if your more into XC I suggest Zbroz/Axis , Zbroz/Exit or Houser with either axis or exit. Now if your just the weekend warrior a solid set of revalves will do you fine, I have owned many different setups from Hygear triples, GT Thunder pro revalves all the way up to Elka elite 4's and AXIS triples I personally found out after owning 5 different sets of Elkas they need a good tweak to make them perform to their best. Elka make great shocks, everyone has different opinions and different views to things. Overall look at the positive side to this by the description of your mods you have a pretty nice quad. Good choice on wanting a stabilizer makes a big difference. Keep a close eye on Ebay for a used Precision. Stoneconcepts list them often.

Thanks for your responses. I am more of a weekend rider so I think I am going to look into some elka shocks. I don't know what stage what is the diffrence in them? And deffanatley a steering stabilizer

If you're more recreational, or on a tighter budget, you could get a set of '08 shocks and have them revalved and resprung by one of the various companies out there like Race Tech. I know that a lot of people like Elka, but I'm not a fan. If you're looking for an MX setup on a budget, a set of Alba a arms and a set of YFZR shocks would be a good start. A steering stabilizer will help quite a bit, as well.

kilroy, I had an '06 YFZ as well, and went from stock suspension to a Fox/ATV FourPlay front end, and the difference was amazing. I plan to do the same with my YFZR, but I can't justify the price yet, as the stock stuff is pretty good, and a new front end (the one I want) would cost me $2500...

. Standard I'm in the same boat you're in. I only ride trails probably twice a month if I'm lucky so I don't see myself spending $2000 on car front end and shocks so I'll be on stock quite a while. I think the stock shocks aren't bad

Standard: My Fox/Houser was much less than $2500! Call Kenneth for his best price you maybe surprised! I would highly recommend going with 2 sets of streamline brake line clamps because one set isn't enough!

LT is the most plush ride you can get but it's also the most expensive. It all boils down to your budget and needs: Houser Long Travel A Arm Kit with Fox Float 3 RC2 Evols Yamaha YFZ 450 - Immortal ATV

tetonw, I meant to say that the YFZR stuff isn't bad. I thought the YFZ stuff was pretty harsh. It wasn't as bad as the early LT-R stuff, but still rigid. To justify a new front end on a carbureted YFZ was fairly easy for me. Is yours FI or carbureted?

OP is "clayton 05" & he has a 05 YFZ Carbed so MX aftermarket would be a great improvement. tetonw if you have a R and only ride twice a month don't spend the money. If you have got the money spend it...lol....There is still no comparison between stock and aftermarket. I don't know what Yamaha was thinking with the rear shock....? The cheapskates put the reservoir for the rear shock one inch from the exhaust....Can you say boil the shock oil and major fade! The rear shock should always be a remote reservoir! I wouldn't doubt that this decreases the service life of the shock oil by at least a third! Heck my 88 250R had a remote reservoir on it!

yfz450 long travel shocks

I ride silver lake a couple times a year and it is rougher than ever with all the trucks out there now. I have an 05 and my stock shocks sucked, a few years ago I bought elka dune editions and a stabilizer, much better but still rough, my sons yfz is an 07 or 08 with stock shocks and it seems to ride smoother than mine.

I hit the trails maybe once a month so I want to do this probbaly without long travel but with a more comftorble suspention. Lt is just all around more money than I would like to spend

clayton 05 Your only options are revalves or buy after market standard travel however, by the time you buy standard travel you aren't far in price from long travel. Since you are short on funds you could try finding a good used long travel setup. Other than that you'll have to live with what you got! Since you ride on the dunes don't you want to go wider for more stability?

Just a thought. You could buy some take off 14' r front shocks and buy some long travel arms. I've read here that on the yfz long travel shocks are either 18.25" or 18.5". That would be the same as the R. I have the 14'r and the stock shocks are very good. I couldnt justify the expense for aftermarket shocks and arms.

Check out BNR Motorsports in North Lima, OH - they're taking over from GT Thunder with stock rebuilds. My friend just got all three shocks done there for under a grand, and they are amazing! Maybe not quite as good as my LT Elka setup, but equal to standard travel Elkas easily. Steering stabilizer would definitely help on the dunes and trails as well. Personally, I'm running 4:1 offset front rims and no stabilizer, but that only works with fairly wide a-arms, so it's not a cheap thing to get into.

I have a 2006 yfz with Elkas, hi and low speed compression adjust, rebound. Not long travel. Also have a Scott steering stabilizer on it. GYTR exhaust, minor motor mods. Due to work I have become a weekend warrior and the suspension is lame compared to my long travel setups I have had. People will spend money on motor mods to go faster than the quad can handle. Should be the other way around. I had a honda 450r with a long travel houser\axis front end, axis gt thunder rear. Unbelievable! To me a 450r is horrible stock if you want to go fast in the rough. To me the long travel also makes up for a narrow quad too. My Roll Lobo chassis quads are both set up for xc and extremely stable. As was the 450r. Would like to see what this yfz would do with a houser LT front and rear.

If you want a set of R shocks in excellent condition let me know!

Very happy with how mine works at the dunes. Long travel XC width by GT Thunder. Turn the sound down! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZrSo6HnuIk That being said, my wife's KFX450 has revalved stock shocks and it also works very well. Just depends how much you want to spend. Lots of good used parts out there for cheap.

Long travel if you can swing it. nothing compares to it in my opinion!

I don't need it, but getting it anyways! Why not

^^ money shot!

  1. Long travel vs. stock length shocks

Usually, they require a shock around 18.5" +/-. Long travel allows much better leverage ratios for handling the whoops, breaking bumps, big jumps, etc. All around the shocks have nearly an inch or more of travel to work with. That can be the difference between bottoming out hardcore and getting hurt or saving yourself.

  14. YFZ 450R Shocks and A-arms

People use the word "long travel" as such a general term. Most aftermarket shocks on the YFZR use around a 20" shock and the stock is only about 18.25". Its not as simple as long travel or standard travel shocks just because a "LT" setup on one quad has a shorter shock than what may come stock on the R stock doesnt mean the R has a "LT" setup.
