Does Airborne Work to Treat a Cold?

A Dietary Supplement Intended to Help Boost Your Immune System

  • Ingredients
  • Is It FDA Approved?
  • Side Effects

When faced with a cold or flu , people will often turn to over-the-counter (OTC) supplements that promise to "boost" their immune system. One such product is an American dietary brand known as Airborne. It offers a range of supplements composed of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbal extracts that are said to offer immune support.

Anecdotally, there are many people who say Airborne works to prevent and shorten a cold. However, there isn't much scientific research that supports this.

This article takes an unbiased look at the issue, breaking down the ingredients, risks, and what the current research says.

What Are Airborne Immune Support Supplements?

Airborne Immune Support supplements were created during the 1990s by Victoria McKnight-McDowell a former schoolteacher who posited that a combination of natural ingredients could enhance the body's immune function and shield it from minor infections like the common cold.

Sold in a variety of formulations—including tablets, lozenges, gummies, chewable tablets, effervescent tablets, and powders—Airborne was initially marketed as an "immune booster" capable of preventing the common cold . Other OTC products have made similar claims, including brands like Emergen-C, NatureMade ImmuneMax, and Zicam Immune Support.

It seems a logical hypothesis given that certain vitamins (which function as antioxidants ) and minerals (which function as electrolytes ) are essential to the body's immune defense. On the flip side, a deficiency of amino acids is linked to a weakened immune response.

McKnight-McDowell further added herbal extracts which anecdotal evidence suggests may have immune-boosting properties.

Today, there are no fewer than 20 different Airborne formulations, some with flavors like blueberry-pomegranate or pink grapefruit and others with ingredients or additives such as elderberry . There is even one formulation directly marketed for children (called Airborne Kids Assorted Fruit Flavored Immune Support Gummies).

When to Take Airborne

Airborne has products that are meant to be taken every day to prevent colds as well as products that deliver larger doses of vitamin C, which are typically taken at the onset of a cold. Follow the instructions on the manufacturer's packaging and don't take more than directed.

Active and Inactive Ingredients

Airborne Original, the brand's cornerstone product, is comprised of 17 nutrients and herbs that serve as its active ingredients:

  • Riboflavin (vitamin B2)
  • Japanese catnip
  • Isatis root

Arguably, the "backbone" ingredient is vitamin C. Each dose contains 750 milligrams (mg) or 833% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) .

Airborne Original also contains inactive ingredients such as maltodextrin, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, dextrose (sugar), vegetable coloring, and citrus flavoring.

What the Research Says

It is well known that many of Airborne's active ingredients, namely vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, play a central role in the body's immune function.

Whether the amounts delivered in Airborne supplements "boost" the immune system (even in those with nutritional deficiencies ) remains unproven.

To start, the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids contained in Airborne are readily obtained in the foods we eat, and, with the exception of vitamin C (833% of the RDI), vitamin E (45% of the RDI), and selenium (27% of the RDI), are not delivered at levels much higher than one would obtain with a normal diet. The remaining nutrients fall well below 10% of the RDI.

Even with vitamin C, increasing the amount circulating in your body is no guarantee you won't still get a cold.

There is limited evidence that the ingredients in Airborne may be more helpful if taken when you already have a cold. Some, like vitamin C, zinc, and echinacea may help shorten the duration of the illness.

Vitamin C and Colds

A 2016 meta-analysis concluded that vitamin C supplementation may help shorten the duration of the common cold, especially if taken at doses of 8 g per day for at least five days, starting within the first 24 hours of symptom onset. However, the researchers also concluded that daily supplementation with vitamin C doesn't decrease the overall incidence of colds.

A 2020 review study found similar results with regard to zinc, another popular anti-cold remedy.

With respect to ingredients like echinacea, there has been mixed evidence that it may help shorten (rather than prevent) colds. Even so, a review of studies published in 2014 concluded that the overall evidence is "weak."

There is even less evidence that ginger (or any of the other herbal extracts) offers anything in the way of immune protection against the cold or any other infection.

Is Airborne FDA Approved?

No dietary supplement is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This is because supplements are not regulated in the United States in the same way as prescription drugs. While vitamin supplements are "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS), they are not independently tested by the FDA until there is ample evidence of harm.

The FDA requires supplements like Airborne to carry a disclaimer stating that the product "is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."

Whenever manufacturers step over the line, legal action can be taken as occurred with the manufacturers of Airborne back in 2008.

2008 Class Action Lawsuit

A class action lawsuit was filed against the manufacturers of Airborne in 2008 citing false and misleading claims that the supplement could cure or prevent colds. The lawsuit, led by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, was settled for $23.3 million. While manufacturers have since dropped the claims, they (and other brands) still regularly use the term "immune" on their labels.

Airborne Side Effects and Safety

Although Airborne supplements are generally safe, they are not for everyone. People who are pregnant or nursing should not take Airborne unless instructed to do so by their healthcare provider. The same applies to children under the age of 4. (Airborne Kids Gummies is only recommended for children 4 and over.)

There are few side effects associated with Airborne, but the manufacturer warns that some people may experience "sensitivity to any of the vitamins or herbal extract" ingredients. Sensitivity refers to both allergies and general intolerance of the ingredients (manifesting with stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea).

Airborne should be used with caution in people with diabetes , particularly children with diabetes, as it does contain sugar.

Certain vitamins, minerals, and herbal medicines can interact with other drugs. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking Airborne if you use any of the following:

  • Antibiotics
  • Anticoagulants ("blood thinners") like warfarin
  • Diuretics ("water pills")
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil (ibuprofen) or aspirin
  • Sulfa drugs
  • Tretinoin or isotretinoin (vitamin A derivatives)

Can colds be prevented?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you and your children take standard precautions during cold and flu season, such as staying away from people who are sick, washing your hands frequently, and avoiding touching your nose, mouth, or eyes with unwashed hands.

If you do get a cold, keep away from others until you feel better. Get lots of rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Over-the-counter medicines can help ease symptoms but will not make a cold go away any faster.

Airborne is a brand of supplements containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs that the manufacturers suggest can support immune health. While it was once actively promoted as an "immune-booster" able to cure or prevent colds, there is no evidence to support the claims.

I bought a ticket thru them back in…

I bought a ticket thru them back in March. Unfortunately I had to cancel and they promised a refund within 2 months. After 10 emails promising me that they are working on it I have given up. I will continue contacting them and maybe even posting all the correspondences on social platforms. Do not under any circumstances use them.

They cancelled my booking "by accident"!

Booked flight and never rec'd my e-ticket. When I called them to investigate, they explained that my booking had been cancelled by them "by mistake". When I enquired about rebooking they explained that the my desired flights were no longer available but If I was willing to pay more, they could get me on another flight. Thankfully I didn't re-book with them however I'm still waiting to be reimbursed for my original booking.

Charged twice for one ticket after flight was canceled and having to rebook

Re: Airborne Traveler My initial ticket was canceled four days before my trip by the company claimed they didn’t have a flight. Airborne Traveler reissued a ticket for another flight. I was charged twice, once for the cancelled flight and a second time for the flight I took. I contacted the company via phone calls, email and customer service page on their website and they have yet to reimburse me. This occurred April of 2022 and now it is April of 2023 and I’m still corresponding via email and phone calls trying to resolve this. Horrible experience of having being charged twice just before leaving on a flight and no one interested in resolving this.

I booked an air ticket in August 2022. Two days before my flight, I received an email stating that ticket had been cancelled. The email stated that the ticket price would be refunded on the same card, and would take 6 - 8 weeks. I have learned a big lesson. I will never book thru a third party again. Definitely, buyer beware!!

Fraudulent Company "Airborne Travel"

Today October 17, 2022, I made 2 calls to the number listed for customer service for Airborne only because the link in the email showed an error message that went nowhere. These calls were to cancel both flights! The agent on the first call hung up on me. The second agent took my booking number and put me on hold for almost 8 mins before they ended the call. I see they have used a West Jet Logo or one that looks similar so one would not think twice. I believe this company is fake and fraudulent, tricking people for the purpose of stealing money. I will call the authorities, the airlines, and BBB to report these incidents. I/ we know we have been duped and will not see a refund.

Tickets never arrived.…

Booked a flight and for days they gave me the run around about my tickets coming. After 5 days of being told a supervisor had fixed their error, they told me the last day my flight was canceled and tried to pressure me to get another flight for way more money. Now the supposed refund could take days. I had to cancel through my bank to even get a refund and then buy tickets at a higher rate due to booking later. This is definitely a scam!

Airborne Traveler.com: the epitome of rudeness

I called to book a flight on August 11, 2022 for myself and my wife. Since then I have needed to call regarding some questions about the flight on a few occasions. I was yelled at, hung up on, and told I would need to pay for additional services provided by Airborne Traveler.com. They have to be some of the rudest people I have dealt with. I finally decided to call Spirit Airlines with my questions. They were very polite and patient with me, and answered my questions. I am amazed that Spirit Airlines would allow Airborne Travel to represent them in any way, and I am surprised that Airborne Traveler.com can remain in business after treating customers as rude as they do.

Similar to other reviews this was a painful lesson for me to learn in travel booking. You will NEVER get your money back. They are a scam 100 per cent. Please don't use them. At a time of recession and rising inflation very few can afford this type of loss. I can't stress enough - buyer beware.

Refund on complete IGNORE

I had to put one star in order to write this review but in all honesty it is an absolute zero or even less. They are the biggest liars that exist within the travel industry. They promised me a refund on April 25th and said that it would take a minimum of 2-3 weeks . It is now going on 6 weeks and counting. I had to cancel my ticket due to an unexpected knee surgery and since then they have proceeded to tell me that the refund will be reimbursed within 5 days or they leave you waiting for an exorbitant amount of time or now they just hang up when I say the word refund. Scammers, liars, take your pick. There's a reason why their rates are the cheapest when you open an airlines' website...do not be fooled like so many of us have been....

DO NOT BOOK WITH AIRBORN

We booked our flights a month ago. Received E-Ticket day before the flight. I called the airline company because I was trying to check in and they notified me that the confirmation number I had DIDNT exist. This company is a scam and it was my fault not to read any reviews. Please do not use this service.

This company is horrible

This company is horrible. I booked my flights 45 days an advance on their site. While at the airport my flight was changed from a 9:45 am to a 2:30 pm layover flight. The airline explained this company purchased my flight the night before and the am flight was booked. I called them and they were very nasty, rude and even hung up on me. After hours on the phone the airline issued me a credit. Since I couldn't use the credit at another airline I end up spending an unexpected 500.00 in order to get to my vacation destination. Save your safe the headache and don't use them.

Hurricane Helene: Airline travel advisories, flight delays, cancellations; what to know

Stream fox 35 news.

ORLANDO, Fla. - According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Helene formed on Wednesday and made landfall as a powerful Category 4 storm in Florida's Big Bend region on Thursday evening.

The storm has impacted airports with strong winds, heavy rain, and the potential for severe weather. That could lead to flight delays or cancelations at Florida's major airports, including Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA).

Several airlines have issued travel advisories ahead of Helene, which typically allow people to change their flights or rebook them without extra fees.

Here's what you need to know

What airports are in Florida?

  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)

Are Florida's airports open or closed ahead of Hurricane Helene?

  • Orlando International Airport: Operating under normal conditions. Delays, cancelations are possible.
  • Orlando Sanford International Airport: Operations are normal.
  • Tampa International Airport: Will close at 2 a.m. Thursday, and remain closed until the storm passes. Commercial and cargo flights will be suspended.
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport: Operations are normal.
  • Miami International Airport: Operations are normal.
  • Jacksonville International Airport: Operations are normal.

How can I change my flight ahead of Helene?

Several airlines have issued travel advisories ahead of Helene, which usually allows passengers the ability to change their flights without change fees. The rules, limitations, and requirements vary by airline.

Below are each of the major airlines' current travel alerts and advisories.

Airline travel alerts:

  • Delta Air Lines Travel Alerts
  • Frontier Travel Alerts
  • JetBlue Travel Alerts
  • Southwest Travel Alerts

The best place to check if your flight has been delayed or canceled is directly through the airline you booked through. You can check that airlines' mobile app, website, or if you're already at the airport, at the counter or on one of the monitor displays.

MCO does track flight delays and cancelations , too.

SCAM!!! I booked a flight at the end of September. They said that flight was cancelled and gave me options for another flight that was of course more expensive. I couldn't do that flight so they said they would refund my money but it would take 30 days. Now that the 30 days is over they will answer the phone and put me on hold and then never pick back up eventually hanging up on me. This was a very hard lesson to learn.

DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY

I booked my flight in March 2022, for a flight in June 2022. I was sent a confirmation email, but no eticket. When I reached out to customer service for my eticket they said i should recieve it in 48-72 hours. It was never sent. I called the service line and was hung up on. I called the airline I booked with and they said what happened is that they recieved the booking details, but that then the booking was cancelled without my knowledge. These guys are an absolute SCAM!!!! I just had to pay 3x as much for a flight I have to be on in 5 days, that i booked almost 4 months ago.

If I could give no stars I would. This company appears to be a sham company. I purchased four tickets back in May. they sent me a receipt but never sent me the tickets. When I called they said the flight had been cancelled, but they had no way to contact me. This was a lie because they had my email to send me the receipt. I had to go to the airline directly and bought the exact same flights for twice as much. After seven calls, Airborne has not reimbursed me the $739.92 they owe me. Don't use this service!!!!!

Avoid This Company

I was just reading over the reviews and it seems to be the same story. I thought I was booking with the airline, but somehow I ended up booking with Airborne. I never got my e ticket, so I called them. The guy on the phone said that he had to cancel the booking and start over. I did get my e-ticket and I did fly, but now I have been charged twice. Same flight same day same two people. I called them just now and they said someone will call me back. Seems unlikely, right? I believe I will go directly to my credit card to dispute the charge.

This group is fraudulant

This group is fraudulant. Upon giving my credit card number, my account was charged and I received an email "confirming" my booking (but not the etickets). After several days I phoned and was told my flight had one stop with a long layover (airline does not go to the city claimed as the "1 stop"). Then was told I was not being put on the airline I "booked" with, but they could cancel my initial booking for a different date (same price, different airline) just pay the amount again and my original payment would be refunded in 20-28 days. This bait and switch was becoming all too obvious. If I requested them to just cancel the booking, I was told they would charge me another $500 and see my refund in..yes 30 days give or take. Person spoke poor English, was surly, regularly hung up on me then later called back (from an LA number) claiming phone company issues. Their web page for checking on your booking was always "closed down for maintenance". Got jerked around a lot and it became very obvious this is not a legitimate travel agency. They must have called me 20 times after I refused to pay the $500 cancellation fee. Used spoofed phone numbers from LA and Las Vegas. Like others I have read, have no idea how I got on their website as I was trying to go to my airline site directly. Pretty clear they do not book you on your flight and they do not refund anything taken from you. Fair to assume the 11 "excellent" ratings here are all plants;

I asked them why they kept my money they told me they were holding it for me. I lost over $2000 because of this unbelievable scam. I was taking my 11 and 13 years old to Peru - they broke my children’s hearts. Fak you airborne travel!!!

Couldn't get on the flight. Called airborn because if your flight is canceled its federal law they have to refund. They hung up on me twice and were laughing.

They send generic emails saying I will get my refund and when you call once you say your looking for a refund d you get hung up on. I reported the company to the BBB. They sent them a letter stating I would get a refund. This all began in May of 2022. I still call them once a week.

Scammed by Airborne travelers.com

Who has ever heard of having to be at check in at airport 4 hours before your domestic flight? (We were never told on ticket or by anyone). We were supposed to read their minds I guess. They said We were categorized as 'missed our flight' even though we were there an hour before, AND no refund on tickets! Next flight middle of night tonight with high extra charge. We have flown so many times with no rules like this one. Oh my god we are livid! Drove to Oakland airport at 2 am, been awake for the past 24 hours! Only to hear we were late for check in! Lost our hotel reservation, rental car all because we weren t at airport 4 hours before check in! Been on phone with everyone and their grandmother complaing with no resolution. What else can I do? What a SCAM! Never use Spirit Airlines or Airborne travelers.com they're horrible!! So back home - all packed but going no where. What a nightmare! 😱

Complete and total fraud do not go…

Complete and total fraud do not go through this company my daughter went through this company and in July and and when it came time for her flight they canceled her flight and said that that airline which was United was not flying that day.. They said that they will offer a refund Which would take 45 days every time we call them it's somebody that does not speak English they hang up on you They tell you that your claim has been processed and and it will be delivered in your bank account 7 to 10 business days.. I had to turn around and buy my daughter and my granddaughter and her and her daddy a plane ticket back to California or no which cost you'd mean additional $1000 So this company has cost me $1700 this is not OK. These online companies are a joke it seems that airborne travel and trip front trip front travel are two of the same company. They have the same phone number . You just never know who you're gonna talk to but it's the same age agents over and over.

No refund for my booking

Hii, My name is Amandeep kaur. I booked a flight for 2 passengers on May 4th. But due to some reasons, my flight got cancelled by your company. The amount of US $436.70 was deducted from my credit card. It has been 2 months now, but I didn’t get my refund back yet. Everytime I do call the customer service, they are making excuses that I’ll be getting my refund in next 15 business days. One of your representatives named Robert said, I will email our seniors and you will get it in next 3 days. And it has been more than2 months, I don’t know why it is taking so long. They are not even responding to my emails.. what the hell?

How Safe Are You From Covid When You Fly?

By Mika Gröndahl Tariro Mzezewa Or Fleisher and Jeremy White April 17, 2021

  • Share full article

To understand how risky it may be to board a flight now, start with how air circulates in a plane.

More people are flying every day, as Covid restrictions ease and vaccinations accelerate. But dangerous variants have led to deadly new outbreaks, raising questions about just how safe it is to travel now.

In most single-aisle models, you are constantly breathing a mixture of fresh and recirculated air.

On this plane, air is blown in from ceiling ducts and sucked out through vents near the floors. Half of the air that is sucked out is released from the plane, and the other half is filtered and eventually sent back into the cabin.

With the help of researchers, we simulated more than 2 million air particles to understand how they flow within the cabin, and how potential viral elements may pose a risk.

Air is refreshed roughly every two to three minutes — a higher rate than in grocery stores and other indoor spaces, experts say. It’s one reason, in addition to safety protocols, that there have not been many superspreader events documented on flights.

The high exchange rate on planes forces new and existing cabin air to mix evenly, with the goal of minimizing pockets of air that could become stale or linger for too long.

But that doesn’t mean flights are completely safe. This is what happens when someone wearing a mask sneezes on board. Note: Particles are not to scale.

As air blows from the sides, particles move toward the aisle, where they combine with air from the opposite row.

Not all particles are the same size, and most don’t contain infectious viral matter. But if passengers nearby weren’t wearing masks, even briefly to eat a snack, the sneezed air could increase their chances of inhaling viral particles.

This is what would happen if people sneezed in different parts of the plane. To prevent air from circulating throughout the cabin, the ventilation system keeps it contained to a few rows.

By design, the ventilation system is integral to how a plane operates: The system is powered by the engines that propel the plane, constantly sucking in outside air that is then pressurized and conditioned to control for temperature.

Pressurization plays a key role because air at cruising altitude is thin — good for flying fast, but not great for providing oxygen to breathe.

After air snakes into the plane and is conditioned, it eventually climbs up riser pipes to the ceiling ducts that help distribute the air into the cabin.

Throughout the flight, cabin air is periodically sucked through two HEPA filters into a manifold under the floor, where fresh and recirculated air are mixed. Each filter has 12 panels of densely pleated fiberglass mesh that catch most microscopic particles.

Ventilation systems vary slightly among plane makers, but most have similar filtration and recirculation methods.

Once air has been pulled out of the cabin, the portion that will not be recirculated leaves the rear of the plane through a valve that helps to constantly adjust cabin pressure.

The Risks Beyond Flights

How air flows in planes is not the only part of the safety equation, according to infectious-disease experts: The potential for exposure may be just as high, if not higher, when people are in the terminal, sitting in airport restaurants and bars or going through the security line.

airborne travel legit

As more people fly — nearly 1.5 million people passed through U.S. airports on Friday — congestion and crowding in parts of the airport can make physical distancing a greater challenge.

Airports vary in size and passenger volume, configurations and on-location businesses, Harvard researchers found. That could increase the chances of exposure depending on where people linger and for how long.

Going to in-terminal restaurants, for example, can be risky because masks are routinely removed and kept off to eat.

airborne travel legit

The Harvard researchers found that many airports were not designed to mitigate the airborne spread of respiratory pathogens. Although some airports have installed new or additional filtration systems, distancing, vigilance and other safety practices are still crucial.

“The challenge isn’t just on a plane,” said Saskia Popescu, an epidemiologist specializing in infection prevention. “Consider the airport and the whole journey.”

Methodology

The particle air flow simulation was conducted using a later version Boeing 737NG as the model for the cabin interior, which only has side air inlets. The model accounted for passengers occupying all of the seats. A computational-fluid dynamics code system known as FEFLO was then used to simulate the flow of more than 2.5 million particles.

A large number of very small particles were introduced at the cabin inflow ducts, in part to ascertain the movement of pathogens that may have passed through the HEPA filters without being caught. The simulation showed that the air close to passengers' heads had been in the cabin for less than 50 seconds. The first 10 frames of the particle flow animation were slowed down for clarity.

Different positions of sneezes were simulated as part of the modeling, and only smaller particles were used to estimate what may become airborne. This assumed face coverings could block larger particles expelled during a sneeze that can otherwise land on surfaces and body parts. Particles in this visualization were scaled up for presentation purposes.

Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Travel Advisory

Travel advisory july 31, 2024, see individual summaries.

Updated to reflect U.S. government restrictions on travel to Northern Israel, and information for U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents and qualifying immediate family members seeking assistance in Gaza.

Do Not Travel To:

  • Gaza due to  terrorism  and  armed conflict
  • Northern Israel within 2.5 miles of the Lebanese and Syrian borders due to the rising tensions between Hizballah and Israel

  • Israel due to  terrorism  and  civil unrest
  • West Bank due to  terrorism  and  civil unrest

Country Summary:  Terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists and other violent extremists continue plotting possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Violence can occur in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza without warning.

Some areas have increased risk. Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to Israel and the West Bank, and Gaza.

Gaza – Do Not Travel

Do not travel due to  terrorism  and  armed conflict .

The U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Gaza as U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling there. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are conducting large-scale military operations in Gaza against Hamas, a U.S. government-designated foreign terrorist organization, which was responsible for the October 7 attack on Israel. As a result of the armed conflict, the security environment within Gaza and on its borders is extremely dangerous and volatile. The pedestrian crossing between Gaza and Israel was damaged on October 7 and remains closed, and the pedestrian crossing between Egypt and Gaza has been closed since May 7 and it is unknown when it will re-open.   There are sporadic telecommunication and internet outages within Gaza further inhibiting the ability of residents to obtain information.

If a U.S. citizen, Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), or qualified immediate family member desires our assistance and has not already provided their information to the Department of State, please email U.S. Embassy Jerusalem at [email protected] with a copy of the individual’s travel document as well as an explanation or proof of relationship.

Visit our website for  Travel to High Risk Areas .

  • If you decide to travel to Gaza:
  • Be prepared for an indefinite stay as the crossings between Gaza with Israel and Egypt can close without advance notice and for long periods during times of unrest and armed conflict.
  • Have a plan for entering and departing Gaza that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.
  • Households with infants and young children should plan for food and supplies, such as diapers and wipes, formula or baby food, and a change of clothing.
  • If you take medication, make sure to have at least five days’ worth at any given time – if you can, we encourage enough for two weeks beyond your scheduled trip and have a copy of your prescriptions handy.
  • If you use assistive or medical devices that require a power supply, be sure to find backup power or other ways that will sustain your device or equipment during a power outage.
  • Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or power of attorney.
  • Discuss a plan with loved ones regarding care/custody of children, pets, property, belongings, non-liquid assets (collections, artwork, etc.), funeral wishes, etc.
  • Leave DNA samples with your medical provider in case it is necessary for your family to access them.

Please be sure to visit our website for  How to Prepare for a Crisis  for information that may be helpful.

Israel – Reconsider Travel (see below for specific advice on travel within 2.5 miles of Lebanese and Syrian borders)

Reconsider travel due to  terrorism and civil unrest .

The security situation remains unpredictable, and U.S. citizens are reminded to remain vigilant and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness as security incidents, including mortar and rocket fire, often take place without warning.

  • U.S. government employees in Israel under Chief of Mission security responsibility are currently restricted from personal travel to the following locations:
  • Within seven miles of the Gaza demarcation line, as well as the cities of Ashdod and Ashkelon; and
  • Within 1.5 miles of the Israel-Egypt border.

Additional travel restrictions may be imposed on U.S. government employees under Chief of Mission security responsibility, with little to no notice due to increased security issues or threats.

Northern Israel (within 2.5 miles of Lebanese and Syrian borders) – Do Not Travel

U.S. government employees in Israel under Chief of Mission security responsibility are currently restricted from personal travel within 2.5 miles of the Lebanese and Syrian borders. Any U.S. government travel to this area is done in full coordination with Israeli security forces.

Due to the ongoing active hostilities between Israel and Hizballah, the U.S. Embassy strongly recommends that U.S. citizens do not travel within 2.5 miles of the Lebanese and Syrian borders. Cross-border rocket, missile, and drone strikes continue to impact this area daily and have resulted in casualties. The Israeli authorities already restrict travel to these areas.

West Bank – Reconsider Travel

  • U.S. government employees in Israel under Chief of Mission security responsibility are currently restricted from all personal travel to the West Bank, except:
  • U.S. government employees can use Routes 1, 90, and 443 at any time.
  • U.S. government employees are permitted personal daylight travel to Jericho and Bethlehem, including Beit Jala and Beit Sahour.   Given continued closures of checkpoints throughout the West Bank, the only permitted and accessible route into Bethlehem for U.S. government employees and their family members is through Checkpoint 300 near Rachel’s Tomb.
  • U.S. government employees are permitted daylight travel to: Inn of the Good Samaritan, An-Nabi Musa, Wadi Qelt Nature Preserve, and St. George’s Monastery along Route 1; and Qumran, Kalia Beach, St. Gerasimos/Khogla Monastery, Al Auju, and Qasr al-Yaud baptismal site along Route 90.

Over the past few months, there has been an increase in settler violence, Israeli military operations, and terrorist attacks.

Additional travel restrictions may be imposed on U.S. government employees under Chief of Mission security responsibility with little to no notice due to increased security issues or threats.
