The Eclipse (2009): This movie tells an eerie ghost story set in a fictional Irish seaside town when a visiting horror novelist strikes up a relationship with an Irish widower. 

The Cured (2017): Somewhat prophetically positioned given the COVID-19 pandemic, this horror movie is set in a post-plague world. The outbreak of a virus has been mainly brought under control, but the sick are kept locked up while the cured are allowed to lead almost normal lives. It was filmed around north inner city Dublin.

The main plot of this tour is dictated by the dark mysteries that begin to unfold, due to the nature of the past history of the area. As we negotiate the trails and terrain, we are surrounded by nature to set the tone. When we reach the peak, we encounter the old Megalithic site, confirmed to be constructed by the great ancients of Ireland BC, where a tomb once existed. They laid at rest until disrupted by order of a few free masons radicals. The site was looted and then destroyed in order to salvage its building materials to build a hunting Lodge in 1735. This lodge is now known in legend as the Hell Fire Club!

With the windows blacked out for entertainment purposes, don’t expect to see all that much of the city other than the core destinations, but you won’t lack for stories, taking in Dubliner Bram Stoker’s Dracula , or the local ghosts and ghouls. Yes, Dublin does indeed have two ghost-leaning bus tours – there’s quite the spooky history. The Gravedigger Bus Tour , the more recent addition, is a little more historically informative and a little less entertainment-focused than its rival and includes a ‘ghoulish brew’ at the final stop, the Gravedigger’s Pub, which gives the tour its name. This one is only a touch less cheesy, though; it’s quite definitely more for fun than a serious history lesson. While there are some genuinely impressive sites included, such as the historic, revolution-linked Kilmainham Gaol, you’ll mainly be standing outside hearing stories rather than actually touring them. Expect a playful, slightly gruesome, quirky, colourful night out. The bus itself is pretty spooky too.

Taking its cues from ancient stories passed down through generations of Irish folklore, the Haunted History Walking Tour includes tales of cult-like activity at the Hellfire Club overlooking the city. The author of Dracula grew up in the upmarket north-side Dublin suburb of Clontarf, and the popular district now celebrates one of its most iconic sons with a spooky castle glance at his greatest creation. The cynical might see Castle Dracula as simply an elaborate haunted house, but with characters roaming the halls who seem extremely into their roles, you will learn quite a bit about Stoker’s life and art, in between the visits to Dracula’s lair and strolling the gothic-themed, dimly lit tunnels. St Michan’s Church/Christchurch Cathedral

Both of these tourist-leaning churches offer tours, though you can just pay to enter yourself and explore the buildings both dating back to the 11th century. Why come here? Apart from the rugged beauty of the ageing buildings themselves, both contain mummies. St Michan’s isn’t all that impressive from the outside, but once you hit the basement, you’ll find the open coffins of 18th-century rebels, the creepy death mask of Wolfe Tone, and ancient furniture that prompts shivers in its own right. Christchurch is the more impressive building, but not so loaded in ancient dinginess. It is home, however, to the mummified bodies of a cat and a rat, the former of which chased the latter down an organ pipe centuries ago, never to emerge.

Wandering Everywhere

HOP-ON, HISTORY-OFF: DUBLIN’S BEST CITY TOURS (INCLUDES GHOSTS)

Now, anyone that knows literally anything about me knows that I LOVE tours. Regardless of where I am, I always weasel my way into a food tour or two – but honestly, I’d never tried a ghost or bus tour. Wild, right?

During a recent trip to Dublin (where nobody warned me just how bloody COLD it would be), I decided to spend the majority of my time being led by various guides around the city. And frankly, it was a super worthwhile experience.

Here’s some of my absolute favourite Dublin tours – starting with touring with the dead.

Ghostbus Tour with Do Dublin

My recent Dublin adventure began with a ghost tour by Do Dublin , and it was nothing short of INCREDIBLE.

To begin with, I learnt about a fictional lass named Carmilla who inspired vampire works around the world – potentially even Dracula – and who was also gay AF. What better way to start a trip?

The eerie tales of bodies dug up from sent shivers down our spines – especially once our guide started re-enacting certain scenes and got us to join in. We listened to macabre tales about Samuel L. Clossey (a physician who would say that there’s no life after death and proceed to pull out intestines, saying that’s all you’ll ever be ) and visited Mary’s ghost at the Shelburn.

A highlight from this tour has to be when we were taken around graveyards and other historical areas, and my friend was able to volunteer. Inside a coffin, I swear I’ve never seen her more at peace. Honestly, it topped all other photograph opportunities that I’d had on the trip.

Hidden Dublin Walking Tour

Following this introduction to Dublin’s dark history, we later joined a walking tour with Hidden Dublin , opening by exploring stories of witches and how they may have actually been influenced by LSD (you’ll need to join the tour to learn all about  that  tidbit).

I learnt the most during my time in Dublin on this tour. Some highlights include:

• 1916 Easter Rising: A pivotal moment in Irish history, the Easter Rising was a rebellion against British rule. The intense fighting in Dublin resulted in significant destruction, loss of life, and the execution of leaders like James Connolly and Padraig Pearse.
• Dublin’s Slums: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dublin had some of the worst slums in Europe. Overcrowded and unsanitary living conditions led to rampant disease and poverty, creating a challenging environment for many residents. Luckily for us, we were able to see where some of these would have been.
• Magdalene Laundries: The Magdalene Laundries were institutions run by religious orders where “fallen women” were sent, often against their will. These women, who were considered a societal embarrassment, endured harsh conditions and were subjected to unpaid labour. You can imagine the death.

And that’s only SCRATCHING the surface of the insane things that have gone on in Dublin’s history. Genuinely, I didn’t know it was so dark.

Hidden Dublin Ghost Bus Tour

On this tour, not only did we get to see (and touch!) various torture devices from the days of old Dublin (I know , how cool!!), but we were able to learn more about mistreated Protestants and a furious Catholic priest who would give talks to their graves, visit the library that James Joyce used to frequent, and see the burial site of the writer of Gulliver’s Travel.

The epitaph on Jonathan Swift’s grave, btw, was written by himself and reads: “Ubi saeva indignatio Ulterius Cor lacerare nequit.” Translated from Latin, it means: “Where fierce indignation can no longer tear at his heart.”

Brb, crying.

Honestly, the revelation about library’s urine-covered books and learning another haunting love story added a further touch of horror to our Dublin trip – and some strange part of myself and my travel partner revelled in it. Judging by the whoops and cries of the other guests at the end of the tour, they loved it, too.

(A part of me thinks I perhaps shouldn’t be so open about this..)

Do Dublin Hop-On Hop-Off

Living near London, I’ve often seen the sightseeing buses filled with eager travellers; but it wasn’t until my legs were on the verge of mutiny from all the walking in Dublin that I decided to finally give the company a shot.

My travel buddy and I hopped onto one of these distinctive buses and embarked on a circuit tour that lasted the whole day. And honestly? It was brilliant. The bus provided an informative and entertaining guided tour, introducing us to all the major parts of the city. It also encouraged us to explore on our own, dropping us off at some of the key sights in the city (and I fell in LOVE with the museums!).

It was the perfect compromise between guided and independent exploration, and in all honesty, this experience completely changed my mind about normal tour buses. 10/10.

Dublin’s tour guides made history come alive, and each tour uncovered a layer of the city’s fascinating and often chilling past. Honestly, I’m still reeling from some of the stories.

Most Haunted Places To Visit in Dublin

The brazen head.

The Brazen Head is the oldest pub in Ireland and dates back to 1198. It’s excellent to enjoy some live music and is also well known for its food. This is where you’re going to enjoy a true Irish experience. This is also where Robert Emmet was hanged back in 1803.

Kilmainham Gaol Museum

Kilmainham Gaol Museum used to be a prison back in 1796 and it closed in 1924. Thousands of prisoners were held in this prison. Men, women and children were held for different crimes as small as s stealing food or bigger ones like murder.

Explore a spooky house in Henrietta Street; check out the gruesome history of the elegant Dublin Castle; survey the tombs of St Patrick’s Cathedral; spot Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels, amongst the bookstacks of Marsh’s Library. Visit St Michan’s Church where Handel first performed the Messiah & the bodies of people who died in the 15th century are perfectly preserved for all to see. Take in Kildare Street, where Bram Stoker, author of Dracula lived. Opt to stay at the Shelbourne Hotel. The Shelbourne is said to be haunted by a young girl by the name of Mary Masters. Mary passed away from cholera in the hotel in the nineteenth century. Ever since then countless people all through the years have seen the ghost or experienced something that they can’t explain.

The Hell Fire Club is the popular name given to the ruined building at the top of Montpelier Hill in Co Dublin where the Devil is said to have appeared.

In Dublin (where author of Dracula, Bram Stoker, was born), visit St Michan’s Church where the bodies of people who died in the 15th century are perfectly preserved for all to see.

Today you will be visiting the notorious Kilmainham Gaol. If you have any desire to understand Irish history – especially the juicy bits about resistance to British rule – then a visit to this former prison is an absolute must. Prisons are famously haunted buildings, and Ireland’s most famous prison is no exception. This threatening grey building, built in 1796, played a role in virtually every act of Ireland’s painful path to independence, and even today, despite closing in 1924, it still has the power to chill. Numerous reports of paranormal activity on the grounds of Kilmainham have been reported throughout the years. Following your visit to the prison, take the remainder of the day to explore the Irish capital on your own. In the evening, take the opportunity to experience other spirits… that is the spirits of Irish pubs! Enjoy a traditional music pub tour of Dublin, where you will interact with locals and indulge on a crisp Guinness beer all the while enjoying the folklore of years past.

Glendalough & Wicklow Mountains

Today, meet your driver guide in the lobby of your hotel. He will be with you for the remainder of your time in Ireland. Spend the day exploring County Wicklow, Powerscourt House and the sacred valley of Glendalough. This region hosts an abundance of folklore. Not only does the ghost of Kathleen float beneath the choppy waters of the lake beside St Kevin’s 6th Century monastery, but also hangman, Hempenstall roams the fog-filled Wicklow mountains at dusk and dawn. Be sure to also visit Wicklow Gaol, which housed prisoners for decades; some of whom allegedly continue to meander through the corridors today.

Wicklow Gaol, which has a reputation of being one of the most haunted places in Ireland and as it housed prisoners from Ireland’s various rebellions against British rule, it’s not surprising. There have been sightings of a woman in 19th-century dress and a little girl who appears in the schoolroom.

County Monaghan

Depart Dublin for Co. Monaghan, this is where the beautiful Castle Leslie is located. Visit Dún na Rí Forest Park along the way. With moss covered woods and mist enwrapped, towering green trees, this forest recalls memories from the haunting, enchanting forests of a fairy-tale novel. Roam through the trails carved by roots and vines of the forest’s ancient inhabitants. However, be weary of the spirit of Cú Chulainn, who haunts these lands since his death defending Ulster against the armies of Queen Maeve.

Castle Leslie

Take today to roam the eerie halls and noteworthy grounds of Castle Leslie. Castle Leslie is set amid 1,000 acres of remarkable scenery and has been home to the Leslie family for over three centuries. Several prominent faces have lodged at the castle over the years such as W.B. Yeats, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger. The Castle offers a myriad of activities and pursuits for guests to partake in, including equestrian facilities, falconry, fishing and cycling. However, in the evening, be sure to check out the infamous Red Room, a room said to be haunted by Norman Leslie who died during WWI. Allegedly, his mother Lady Marjorie was sleeping in this room one night and awoke to see his ghost standing near the foot of her bed, looking through some letters. After a while, he turned to her, smiled, and then faded away. Many other anomalies have been reported by visitors of the castle, such as bells ringing by themselves and strange apparitions wandering down corridors.

Ireland's most haunted Castle

Make your way south to Ballyfin Demesne. Along the way you will visit one of Ireland’s most haunted sites, Leap Castle. Leap Castle certainly is home to many secrets of a dark and mysterious past. Over 400 years ago in what is now known as the “Bloody Chapel” a shocking murder occurred between one brother and his priest brother during high mass. Another source of evil at Leap Castle is a hidden ubliet (dungeon) located off the bloody chapel. It was a small room with a drop floor. Those who were forgotten within this room suffered unimaginable pain and misery until their death. Around c.1900 workmen who were hired to clean out the ubliet made a hideous discovery, human skeletons laid piled on top of each other. Because of its extremely bloody history Leap Castle has always had a reputation for being haunted, a reputation so strong local people avoided it at night. Completely gutted by fire, Leap Castle was boarded up and its gates were locked for over 70 years. Locals have described seeing the windows at the top of the castle “light up for a few seconds as if many candles were brought into the room late at night”. The castle laid in ruin for years.

Ballyfin Demense

Today, enjoy the grounds of Ballyfin. The boutique Relais & Chateaux property boasts a plethora of activities to partake in, from falconry and archery to boating and fishing. If you opt to take your dose of the spooks today, venture to Kinnitty Castle. It’s said to be haunted by the 11th Earl of Kildare and is most famous for its long and turbulent history. The castle was destroyed in 1209 and was later rebuilt by the Norman’s in 1213.

Galway city

Venture to the Galway today. En route, visit Clonony Castle, a 16th-century Tudor castle built with all the usual features for the period, including a murder hole, mysterious passages, and a three-story tower. It was given by King Henry VIII to Thomas Boleyn in exchange for the hand of his daughter, Anne. Anne’s two cousins (also cousins of Queen Elizabeth I) lived there and were buried on the grounds just a hundred feet from the castle, a fact only re-discovered in 1803. There have been many reported sightings of the ghost of a skeletal being known as ‘The Thin Man’ atop of the tower, an eerie hazy glow surrounding him. Spend the remainder of the day exploring the musical capital of Ireland, Galway. Numerous landmarks and places of historical significance are scattered throughout the City of the Tribes, and one of its best known is The Long Walk. Built as an extension of the vibrant city quays and situated near the well-known Spanish Arch, The Long Walk has served as a favourite walking destination for three centuries. Immortalized in song and works of art, an air of romanticism surrounds of the area. Stories of the strange and unexplained have also been told about this picturesque promenade, and many locals claim the place is a hotbed of hauntings.

Experience the wild Atlantic way, as you explore Connemara. Connemara is the area of Western Galway and South Mayo bounded by the Atlantic and Lough Corrib. It is an area beloved by artists and poets, who find magical inspiration in its wide-open bogs and towering cloud-capped mountains. Cottages nestle into hillsides where wild looking sheep with thick fleeces and great curling horns freely graze. The rugged coastline is punctuated with little fishing villages. Connemara translates as ‘Inlets of the Sea’ and the roads along the peninsula’s filigreed coast bear this out as they wind around the small bays and coves of this breath-taking stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way. While in Connemara, you will visit an oyster farm and partake in a tour and tasting. A picnic lunch will follow this experience, allowing you to further indulge on the fresh oysters, lite sandwiches, and of course a glass of bubbly! Take the remainder of the afternoon to continue explore Connemara, and perhaps visit the famed Kylemore Abbey. The Abbey served as the backdrop for the plight of the Benedictine Nuns, who were forced out of Belgium during WWI. Return to Galway in the evening.

JACKIE TYRRELL can still hear the roars from a Dubs dressing room in party mode.

It was O’Moore Park in 2013 and Dublin had just stunned the hurling world with a momentous Leinster semi-final replay win over Kilkenny.

Anthony Daly’s men went on to win their first provincial crown in 52 years, gunning down Galway in the showpiece, and came agonisingly close to their first All-Ireland final since 1961 before Cork edged them in the last four.

Tyrrell won nine All-Irelands with the Cats but still remembers that defeat as clear as day.

Kilkenny face Dublin again in tonight’s Leinster final and their legendary ex-defender warned those in black and amber that the Jacks are back, 11 years on from that super summer.

He told SunSport: “I remember going down the tunnel in Portlaoise afterwards and hearing the euphoria down the corridor, and then seeing a photo of Dotsy O’Callaghan with no jersey on jumping into Anthony Daly’s arms.

“It was almost like a father and son and it showed the bond that was there.

"I thought Dalo would have some job getting their feet back on the ground for a Leinster final, but he did.

“I tore my quad before the first game but they were the better team and we got a draw.

"We played them again a week later and the whole narrative was that if you drew with Kilkenny, we didn’t lose replays.

“They had beaten us well in the 2011 league final.

"We beat them well in Portlaoise in 2012 and he said that if the bus had just collected 30 lads at the Red Cow, they would have had a better performance and you could see the anger in him after that game.

“They brought huge physicality, Dalo had them really wound up and they wanted to get at us again.

"Danny Sutcliffe was breaking on the scene, he was the poster boy of their team and Dalo had them really galvanised.

“They beat us fair and square, backed it up by beating Galway in the final and were the puck of a ball away from an All-Ireland final before Ryan O’Dwyer was harshly sent off against Cork.

“After 2013 they never got anywhere close to those heights again but I do feel they’re starting to build that again under Micheál Donoghue.”

Eoin Cody’s late goal was just enough to see Dublin off in the round-robin series last month as Kilkenny got out of jail at Parnell Park.

But the Sky Blues delivered a monster display against Donoghue’s native Galway a week later to dump them out of the Championship .

Donoghue led the Tribesmen to Liam MacCarthy glory in 2017 and Tyrrell hailed the Clarinbridge man for the progress now seen in his second year in charge in the capital.

He said: “Micheál Donoghue has done an outstanding job.

"If you look at Galway hurling and the amount of managers that have come in since 1989 and couldn’t get them over the line, he’s the only one who did.

“He’s building a very impressive CV and this is a very dangerous game for Kilkenny.

"They got their fill of it against them in Parnell Park and I’d say for the first time ever in Parnell Park I could hear, ‘Come on you Boys in Blue’ being shouted for their hurlers.

“That speaks to another level of development for them.

"To dump Galway out and put themselves in a Leinster final with a really strong opportunity of winning it is a huge turnaround.”

But the jury is still out on Kilkenny nine years on from their last All-Ireland in 2015 — a year before Tyrrell retired from inter-county hurling.

Injuries have plagued boss Derek Lyng this summer as Cody, Adrian Mullen and Walter Walsh have missed games.

But they are all back now with Walsh on the bench tonight and John Donnelly and Mikey Carey, who were doubtful this week, joining Cody and Mullen in the team.

Draws against Galway and Carlow stalled their provincial campaign before gritty wins over Dublin and Wexford saw them scrape top spot.

And Tyrrell hopes winning a fifth Leinster title on the spin can light a fire under the back-to-back All-Ireland runners-up.

STILL NOT SURE

But he remains unconvinced. He said: “It’s a very dangerous game for Kilkenny because from a Dublin perspective, you could strongly argue that since Anthony Daly left them, it’s probably the best position they’ve been in as regards a group and a management aligned with consistent performances.

“If you look at where the Kilkenny team are versus last year, they probably aren’t in the same free-flowing place that they were.

"Drawing against Carlow probably raised a few questions with the group and showed a few cracks.

“The injuries probably disrupted them a small bit during the round robin and Billy Drennan probably hasn’t hit the levels we’d hoped.

“The momentum of the league semi-final win over Limerick has probably dwindled a lot.

"But they’ve had stuttering performances while getting results.

"They probably just need a boost of confidence and winning a Leinster final would do that.

“Winning gives you that extra bit of time to get more of the bodies right and avoid a quarter-final where dangerous teams like Cork are likely to be.

"Winning just makes life that bit more straightforward and it gives you that bit of energy. It just sets up your year for you.”

GAA players, pundits and TV presenters are coming together at The K Club on Thursday, July 11 for a special one-off fundraiser for new bereavement suites being developed at The Coombe Hospital.

Jackie Tyrrell is among the stars who will play a golf event on the Palmer South course, followed by an All-Ireland finals preview dinner at 7pm.

Joshua Bassett is following the yellow brick road on a headlining tour this year, with stops planned for 39 cities across North America and Europe in support of his upcoming album The Golden Years .

The tour will kick off just four days after the singer/actor releases his debut studio album The Golden Years , which he announced last month . So far, he’s shared just one single from the project, a soft rock number that serves as the LP’s title track.

“If I would’ve known those were the golden years/ I would’ve held you longer that night when you kissed me goodbye through your tears,” he sings on “The Golden Years.” “If I would’ve known those were the golden years/ I would’ve never left you alone when you needed me most, my dear.”
