Round trip in an Uber? How to add multiple stops and do a round trip

By Doug H , Updated September 18, 2024 47 Comments

Did you know that you can add up to 5 stops on an Uber ride? Multiple stops make it easy to pick up friends or do a round trip.

But Uber drivers will only wait up to 3 minutes at each stop , so make your stops quick!

You can even do a round trip by adding stops. Set your first stop, then set your second stop as your original location.

Read on to learn more! And see why some drivers don’t like to do stops .

How to add stops to an Uber trip

To add more than one stop to your Uber trip, start on the Home screen and tap the Where to? box, then tap the plus (+) sign next to the text entry box .

You can add up to 5 stops. If you make a mistake, tap the X next to a stop to remove it .

Two steps to add multiple stops: Tap the "where too?" box, then tap the plus sign to add the stops

Tape the plus sign (+) to add multiple stops to your trip

Uber now allows up to 5 stops, up from 3.

An Uber app message saying that passengers can add up to 5 stops

5 stops max!

How to do a round trip

You can do a round trip in an Uber by adding multiple stops. Follow these steps:

  • On the Home screen, tap the ‘Where To?’ text box
  • Enter the location of where you want to go first
  • Tap the + sign to add your original location as the final stop

In other words, you can do a round trip by setting your second stop as your original location.

With this method, you’ll be able to do a round-trip without losing your driver. Just make sure the stops take less than 3 minutes.

If your driver ends the trip because you took longer than 3 minutes at your stop, request a second Uber and understand that it’s not the driver’s fault.

Why use this method? One ride is cheaper than two!

How to add a stop during your ride

If you need to add another stop mid-trip, tap on the driver’s info box at the bottom of the screen.

Find Your current trip and tap Add or Chang e to add another stop or change your destination.

The cost of your ride may change after you add additional stops.

steps to add a stop to an uber trip. tap 'add or change' next to your original destination

Add a stop during your ride by tapping on the ride information, then “Add or Change”

Use multiple stops to:

  • Pick up or drop off a friend
  • Drop off a pre-paid letter or package at a mailbox or shipping store
  • Quickly visit a store to pick up one or two items
  • Do a quick round trip

Don’t use multiple stops to do this:

  • A grocery store trip to stock up on supplies
  • Order food at a long drive-thru line
  • Any bank errand other than using the ATM
  • Any errand that takes longer than 3 minutes

You can’t do multiple stops in an UberX Share!

UberX Share trips don’t allow multiple stops. Request UberX or another Uber service if you need multiple stops.

Why some Uber drivers don’t like to do multiple stops

If you visit driver forums online, you’ll find that many drivers prefer not to do rides with multiple stops .

The main complaint from drivers is that rides with multiple stops typically involve lots of waiting for little extra pay .

Drivers are only paid approximately $0.20 per minute , so there is little incentive to wait around at stops.

Many passengers aren’t considerate of their driver’s time and don’t know how low the pay for wait time actually is.

And passengers can be dishonest about how long a stop will be, or the stop can take longer than anticipated .

So if you’re a passenger, make your stops as short as possible and make sure to enter all stops before you request the ride so your driver knows your entire trip plan as soon as the ride begins.

I haven’t had any problems with Uber except for making a round trip. I hope after reading this I will be able to do a round trip with no problem. I don’t use Uber very often and it’s all new to me, I’m still learning. I recommend that you read up on how to get your ride the way you wish to. When I 1st. started there was a choice to select round trip, after using a few times it doesn’t come up to give me that option. Good luck to all new riders. All and all it’s a great service.

Uber isn’t designed for trips like that. Instead, just request another ride when you need it.

I’m trying to set up a time for a round trip but it does not let you do that It let you set up a time for a one-way when you go for a round-trip it tells you the Uber is near you doesn’t let you set up a time For multiple destinations I know how to do the destinations by pushing the start button but that’s only for one way doesn’t let you set up a round-trip

February 12, 2022 at 10:47 am

I’m not sure how to work around that issue. Round trips are only useful if your stop is only for a minute or two, like a quick stop to drop off mail at a mailbox. If your stop is more than 2 minutes, your Uber driver can end the ride and leave. If your stop is long, just request a second Uber to make the round trip home

DougH How about a round trip pickup and dropoff are seperate days. Id like to leave at 12:00 pm April 2/22 for my destination, 1/2 hour drive. And at 12 pm on the 3rd of April be picked up and brought back to my place of residence? Is their a discounted travel selection that would entertain this type of round trip and if so what wpuld it cost me?

April 2, 2022 at 9:03 am

There wouldn’t be any discount for that type of ride. Uber is an an-demand service, so you request the rides around the time that you need them. To get an estimate for each leg of the trip, download the Uber app and input the destination. Or you can go to Uber.com and get an estimate there.

I tried to do just that. A nearby errand. When I requested another ride to get me back home, the screen showed that I was already home. It showed my home address, not the address where I actually was, falsely indicating I was already home. So I obviously couldn’t use Uber. Luckily a passer-by was willing to drive me home. Apparently I hadn’t gone far enough away. Is there a zone system. This is a serious problem.

The ap has no + sign to add another stop on my phone. Can only set-up a one way trip. This is the most frustrating thing I’ve had to do all week, Why is it so difficult to add a freaking stop?

December 1, 2021 at 5:48 pm

When you first open the app, tap “where to?” On the next screen at the top, you should see the + sign in the top right. But first, make sure you even need a round trip. If you plan to spend more than a few minutes at your destination, you don’t need to plan a round trip. Instead, you will request two separate trips.
