Get Thee a Balcony

Even on less intimate ships, private deck time goes a long way. Viking ocean vessels have all-balcony suites (you can’t go wrong). The Regent Seven Seas Splendor has 10 categories of balconied cabin, with even the most modest a decent 307 square feet. The Penthouse Spa Suites on Seabourn Ovation and Encore are on one of the highest decks, with dreamy views of the ship’s wake. The two-bedroom Royal Suites on Silversea’s Silver Moon come with 194-square-foot verandas. And the Owner’s Residence on Explora Journeys (launching May 2023) has a private pool on its balcony.

Score a Ship Within a Ship

Even larger vessels increasingly cater to family and friend groups with private “enclaves” of cabins and you-and-yours-only shore excursions. On Celebrity ’s “The Retreat,” multiple cabins share a private deck, restaurant, and sometimes a pool. The two Iconic Suites on Celebrity Edge , with two bedrooms each, sit above the bridge—you’ll have a better view than the captain and a 689-square-foot terrace with hot tub, double daybed, and a butler who will arrange en suite dining and cocktails.

Go Big on Expeditions

Anonymity’s not easy on small ships that sail to remote corners of the world (unless you charter them). You’re with other passengers ashore all day, then you’re swapping stories at the bar and over dinner—usually in the one restaurant. Solutions? The megayacht-like Scenic Eclipse , which explores both polar regions and much in between, has nine eating spots. Silversea’s 100-passenger Galápagos ship, Silver Origin , has two, plus in-suite dining, as does the new Seabourn Venture . The 378-passenger Viking Octantis has five dining spaces (its Aquavit Terrace overlooks a series of pools).

You're super excited to be cruising in a cabin with a private balcony. You're daydreaming of kicking back with a book and a cocktail, watching the waves roll by and the sun sink over the horizon. The last thing you want to do is be concerned about a bunch of rules.

The truth is there are several things you're not allowed to do on your cruise balcony — and a few more that are not technically banned but that you shouldn't do anyway. Some are safety issues, while others are about being a good neighbor.

Trust me — you will enjoy having a balcony cabin for its access to sunlight, sea breezes and vacation-time relaxation without the crowds. But you'll have a better time if you do not do the following things on your private veranda.

Smoke a cigarette or cigar

Costa Cruises is the only cruise line I know of that lets you smoke on your personal balcony. That's because cigarettes on a balcony are a fire hazard.

Just search online for photos of the 2006 fire on Princess Cruises ' Star Princess, and you'll see how much damage a discarded lit cigarette can do to a cruise ship. Cruise lines wised up after that and banned smoking on cruise ship balconies . Don't take this rule lightly. In addition to the safety risk you're creating, you will get fined hundreds of dollars and risk disembarkation if caught.

If you're going to get an all-over tan or sunbathe topless, your balcony is a better bet for privacy than the bustling pool deck. Just be aware that your balcony is still visible from several viewpoints.

Folks above you might be able to look down onto your balcony if it juts out beyond the higher decks. Security cameras might capture your naturist moment for posterity, and people on the ship docked across from you or on the pier below might have a direct line of sight into your veranda.

If this doesn't bother you, carry on. However, know that it might make others uncomfortable. (Consider booking a nude cruise if you want to enjoy a clothing-optional cruise vacation.)

While we're on the clothing-optional theme, the same commonsense rule applies to getting frisky with your travel companion on your balcony. Your shipmates and others might be able to both see and hear you if you choose to have an amorous encounter on your balcony.

While you might figure out a way to get some privacy on your expansive suite balcony, I have to think that having sex on a tiny standard-size balcony with sea-sprayed, highly trafficked flooring and metal upright chairs sounds as comfortable as getting romantic in your car. Be careful about up-against-the-railing interactions for the reasons we'll outline below.

Climb on balcony furniture and railings

Hey, hey, all you monkeys. Stick to your cruise ship's rock wall if you need to get a climbing fix. Please do not climb onto balcony furniture, sit on the railings with your feet dangling or — and yes, this has been attempted — climb from one balcony to the next. If you have little ones sharing your cabin, read them the riot act that their feet are not to leave the floor (unless their butt is in a chair) while on the balcony.

Losing your balance when climbing on your balcony is a prime way to fall overboard , and no one wants to make that kind of splash on their vacation.

Throw stuff overboard

In addition to your person, the other thing you don't want to go overboard is, well, everything. Do not throw items overboard, whether it be messages in plastic bottles, food or trash. It all goes into the ocean, where it does not belong and could harm sea life.

Not every well-meant message gets found, meaning your bottle could be clogging the seas with plastic for years to come. Your cruise cabin has a trash can by the desk; use it to dispose of garbage.

Leave little kids unattended

Because your children might have trouble remembering the preceding two rules on their own, make it a family rule that little kids are not to go out on your balcony without an adult. You can stop them when the temptation to climb or throw things becomes too great. The balcony is great for an alfresco breakfast, but it's not a good hiding spot for a cabinwide game of hide and seek.

Tell secrets

I've had many heart-to-heart talks with friends out on a cruise ship balcony, and your personal onboard space is a better place to share secrets than the ship's coffee shop. If you plan to divulge any juicy details, know that sound does carry, and your neighbor planning to enjoy a nap on the adjacent veranda might have given up their snooze to eavesdrop on all your hot gossip.

Turn up the volume

On the "sound carries" theme, your neighbor might be less than pleased when you're having loud, late-night conversations on your balcony or blasting music. Your balcony might be private, but you're part of a cruise ship community. The passengers next to, above and below you might not share your taste in tunes or have a different sleep schedule. Be considerate and keep the volume low, especially during morning and evening hours.

Dry your swimsuits

I'll be honest — everyone does this. You return from the beach and drape your wet swimsuit over the back of the chair on your balcony. This is fine … until the ship sets sail. Then your favorite bikini or trunks get doused with salty sea spray or blown about by the wind, either onto that not-the-cleanest balcony floor or, worse, out to sea. Your cabin shower should have a pull-out cord to use as a clothesline; dry your clothes there, especially when the ship is moving.

Leave the lights on and the doors open

You might not be paying the utility bills for your cruise ship, but that's no reason not to be considerate. Turn your balcony light off when you're not sitting out there after dark. Not only does it save electricity, but the light won't bother your neighbors who are trying to sleep.

Leave the balcony door open, and it will create a wind tunnel when someone opens the cabin door. If you must sleep with the door propped open for fresh air, at least turn your room's air conditioning system off so you're not overworking it. Note that on some ships, the air conditioning goes off automatically when you open your balcony door.

Bring cabin bedding outside

I didn't know this was a trend until recently, but it's one that needs to stop. Some cruisers looking for the ultimate cruise ship snooze have been bringing the balcony furniture into their cabin each evening and lugging their mattress and bedding outside for an alfresco night's sleep.

You might love the glamping, but the cruise ship bedding is not designed to be exposed to moist, salty sea air. Your bedding will not only get dirty but might mildew, which is just plain gross. Future passengers might unknowingly be sleeping on less-than-pristine mattresses, and the cruise line will have to replace its bedding more frequently (passing that extra cost along to you in higher cruise fares). Do us all a favor and sleep indoors where you're supposed to. Reserve your outdoor naptime for days on the pool deck or beach.

Bottom line

What should you do when you're cruising in a balcony room? Order room service at least once, and enjoy it with views of the port or the open ocean. Spend a peaceful moment reading a book in the sun without the noise and splashing of the pool deck. Lean against the railing and watch the ship sail into or out of port, or catch the sun rising or setting.

But for the reasons spelled out above, do not do anything on your cruise balcony that is dangerous, embarrassing or inconsiderate of your neighbors or the environment. Your cruise will be better, not worse, for playing by those rules.

When is a cruise-ship balcony worth the splurge?   Sometimes booking a private veranda is a no-brainer for the vistas, the quick access to fresh air, lots of light, and the extra real estate. But sometimes, because of weather or your itinerary, a balcony may not be worth the extra cost.

I’ve sailed on 300 different cruises, from luxury ocean crossings to European river journeys to an expedition ship in Antarctica , and here’s how I weigh the pros and cons of private balconies on three common styles of small-to-mid-sized vessels.

River Ships

What to Expect: On European rivers, there are two types of balconies: The traditional, step-out space with chairs, and a “French Veranda”—essentially, a wall of glass (via windows that can be lowered with a push of a button or patio-style sliders) that is framed by railings.

The traditional balconies are smaller than what you’d find on an ocean ship because river vessels must fit through narrow locks. Still, there’s room for a couple of chairs and a small cocktail table.

In the priciest suites on a few ships, the balconies are much roomier.   Viking River Cruises’ Explorer Suites, for instance, have balconies that are almost as spacious as those of ocean-going ships, and their aft-facing view is relaxing while traveling on a river.

Some river cruise lines, including Uniworld and Avalon, have only French verandas. This offers access to fresh air and views (on Avalon, if you push a chair up to the rail, it’s almost a real balcony experience) and, because there’s not a separate, defined outdoor area, cabins tend to be more spacious.

Staterooms with French verandas or private balconies are typically located on the top decks of a river-cruise vessel.  The low deck offers window-only cabins, usually with no view—just a bit of light. These windows are typically long and narrow and located high up on the wall.

Know this: The challenge with any type of balcony on a river ship—particularly on a cruise along the Rhine or the Danube—is that during the day, in port, ships may have to tie up to one another; this can completely block not just your view but also your light and privacy. Also, on river cruises you typically spend a lot of time off the ship in river towns; as many balcony cabins as I’ve had, there was never much time to enjoy them.

My Take: Cruising on rivers is all about the landscapes you’re passing through. If you stick to your balcony, you limit your view to just one side of the river. You’ll likely want to head up to the observation deck for 360-degree vistas instead. But since the only other room option—a window-only cabin on a low deck—can feel a bit claustrophobic, I’d prefer a balcony of any kind. Just don’t assume you’ll be using it for hours every day.

Ocean Ships

What to Expect: Balconies are a no-brainer on an ocean cruise—everyone wants one. The good news is that cruise lines have dramatically increased the percentage of balconied staterooms on ships built since about 2010 (the newer, the better). That means balconies are easier to snag and are a better value. On larger vessels—such as those of Celebrity, Holland America, and Oceania—all verandas are comfortable, but the best belong to the highest-level suites and can come with extras such as whirlpools and dining tables.

On smaller ships, and particularly on luxury lines, verandas are a wonderful place to dine al fresco or simply stretch out on a lounger in your own private space. Even cruise lines with slightly older small ships, like Windstar with its intimate power yachts, have added French verandas to standard-sized cabins; these vessels have a handful of actual sit-out spaces in top suites too.

Know This: Location can matter! One of the best spots for a balconied cabin (or suite) is on a ship’s aft deck, facing backward over the wake. It’s an incredibly soothing sight ,and often these verandas (even with a standard-category cabin) are deeper and roomier than usual. By contrast, forward-facing balconies are more subject to winds, movement, and sea spray. You also will want to avoid any forward-facing balcony cabin that’s directly under the bridge (the key navigational area of the ship): At night you may be limited in their use, as the light can hamper operations.

My Take: The bigger the ship, the more crowded the public spaces can be, so it’s nice to have a private slice of the outdoors to relax in from time to time. Breakfast on your veranda is a perfect vacation indulgence (and room service is typically free). At sea, the ocean view is lovely and even in most ports, ships don’t dock too close to each other, so you have nice vistas there too.

Even on smaller, more luxurious ships that don’t feel crowded, a balcony is desirable; if the weather is such that you can spend a lot of time on your balcony, it’s like having an additional room.

Expedition Ships

What to Expect: The hottest new trend in expedition cruising—itineraries to the most remote destinations on earth—is vessels that have all the comforts of small luxury ships, including private balconies. Expedition vessels built since 2014 increasingly have more spacious accommodations that include verandas. Cruise lines whose newest expedition ships have private balconies include Ponant, Scenic, Seabourn, and Silversea. In other cases, lines such as Lindblad offer balconies only in top suite categories.

You may even have a choice of French verandas or traditional ones. On Viking’s Octantis and Polaris expedition vessels, a handful of top suites have normal balconies, while the standard accommodations have “Nordic balconies” that are similar to French verandas, with windows that open halfway.

Know This: How much you actually use a balcony on an expedition cruise is highly affected by your itinerary and the weather. On a cruise to the polar regions, where conditions can be cold and stormy, a private veranda is nice if you want to be able to jump outside to capture a photo, but you likely won’t be spending time lounging or dining there. If you’re headed to a tropical destination, such as the Galapagos, verandas are a wonderful indulgence—and much in demand.

My Take: On my Antarctica cruise last year , my balcony was a nice extra but not a necessity. We loved dashing outside to admire a passing glacier or penguins wobbling up an icy hill, but the weather was too cold to enjoy a meal or a cocktail there. And, as is common on expedition vessels, the best vantage points in such dramatic locales were the upper decks where, both inside and out, we could see the view from 360 degrees.

I would also add, in particular with respect to river cruising, and having recently come back from an enjoyable one on the Danube, another consideration would be how much daylight cruising you will be doing. On our cruise I figure there was only about 3 hours of daylight cruising so our nice French Balcony on the top deck was not as “cost-effective” as it might have been on some other route(s) and/or at some other time of year. As we were cruising late in the fall season it was darker later in the morning and earlier in the afternoon, affecting this equation as well. Nothing is simple. You have to do your homework.

Balcony staterooms are considered to be the best for families. The absolute pleasure of spotting marine wildlife and watching sunsets from the comfort of your balcony is an exclusive experience. The balconies also add an extra advantage if you’re traveling with kids since they open up spaces for them to play and spend time. While you may enjoy all the joys of booking a balcony cabin or stateroom , you may find yourself in a constant fear of your kid facing possible risks. 

The following points must be kept in mind to ensure the safety of your kids while booking a stateroom with a balcony:

A) Check for necessary arrangements in your balcony stateroom:

While booking a balcony stateroom , make sure that it is equipped with safety precautions that may curb any accidents or mishaps. Kid-friendly cruise lines prioritize the safety of their younger guests by adding safety elements to the cruise ship balconies.

• Heavy balcony doors: Balcony staterooms in most luxury cruise lines have heavy sliding glass doors in steel frames. The doors are usually hard to open. This prevents toddlers and younger children from having access to balconies without the presence of adults. 
• Child safety lock feature: The doors to the balcony in a stateroom often come with two locks; one of them is a child safety lock located at the top of the glass door. 
• Tall railings and walls: The walls and railings on most of the cruise ship balconies are at least 42 inches high. The height makes it a challenge for kids to climb over the railings. The railings are also sturdy enough to avoid any damage inflicted by people.

B) Precautions for adults with kids in a balcony stateroom:

While booking accommodation with balcony access on a cruise ship, adults also must follow certain precautions to keep their kids safe.

• Keep your kids under close supervision: You must keep a close check on kids when they’re playing on the balcony. Accompany toddlers and younger children on the balcony as they tend to climb over raised platforms. Adults must explain to kids about their safety and list out certain rules while on a cruise ship balcony. 
• Keep balcony furniture at a safe distance: Cruise ship balconies are usually furnished with sitting areas. If you’re concerned with your kid climbing the furniture, ask stateroom attendants to remove them from the balcony railing. 

C) Choosing the right cruise line with secure balconies:

Some of the respected cruise lines worldwide include suitable staterooms to accommodate families. They also incorporate arrangements for balconies that are safe for kids .

• Disney Cruise Line: The cruise line is known for providing a range of kid-friendly entertainment and activities. The balcony rooms at Disney Cruises feature private balcony doors with kid-proof locks and plexiglass railings. The exclusive Family Verandah Rooms of the cruise line include expanded balconies that are exceptionally spacious for kids.
• MSC Cruises: MSC Cruises are known to provide a range of accommodations, which include cabins, duplex, and studio rooms. The family cabin of MSC Cruises majorly includes two balconies, completed with elements to ensure child safety. You can choose from various family cabins on these cruise ships according to your preferences.
• Royal Caribbean International: The cruise line offers various types of luxurious staterooms that are equally safe for kids. You can find options from standard cabins to suites that feature balconies. Each balcony at a Royal Caribbean cruise is built with safety elements. The balcony doors contain a manual lock at a satisfactory height, away from younger kids.
• Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival Cruises are highly preferred by families. The cruise ships offer exciting programs that allow kids to socialize and learn new skills. It also offers a range of accommodations that are kid-friendly. The balcony staterooms feature childproof balcony doors, along with solid, thick walls.

Carnival to Cruisers: You Know We Can See You Naked, Right?

If you're naked on a cruise ship balcony, can anyone see you? Carnival Cruise Line weighs in.

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald is paid to take lots of Carnival cruises and spend his days responding to cruise nuts on Facebook . You'll see that as either the best job in the world or a living hell.

Heald is known for peppering his possibly infernal professional duties with amusingly frank discussions with his 572,000 followers about topics such as  smoking pot in cabins , elevator etiquette , and the best comedy club seating location for Karens.

On March 11, Heald broached a new subject altogether: cruising in the altogether.

Many cruise passengers among us—and we won't bother with a head count here, just take our word for it—have been known to step out of their cabins and onto their balconies while in the nude. The reasons for doing so begin with curating an even tan and descend from there, but rest assured it's a thing. Especially when ships are at sea and there's no land nearby, some cruisers figure there's no harm in getting a little sunshine in the nuddy.

Carnival's Heald has an important bulletin for those folks.

"If you're naked on your balcony drinking your morning coffee and enjoying your morning coffee and your neighbors can't see you, it's fine," Heald wrote. "But remember, the officers on the bridge can see it all."

In other words, if you've ever gone onto a cruise balcony in your birthday suit, you gave an unrequested gift to the people steering the ship. It's a chilling thought to go along with that chilly ocean breeze.

For a lot of reasons, including watching out for fires and passenger safety, the control room located atop all cruise ships is designed to obtain side views of the vessel through a variety of ways, including multiple security cameras.

Cruise ship bridges are usually built with what's called bridge wings , sections of the wheelhouse that jut out over the water expressly to give crews a better view of the ship's sides.

If you think your cabin is safe from officers' patrolling eyes because it's located directly below the bridge, you might be interested to know that many bridge wings also have clear floors that enable crew to peer at the balconies directly underneath.

Although it was thoughtful of Carnival to confirm the prevalence of balcony nudity, many cruise passengers won't be surprised. In fact, some have documented sightings of their own, such as this (mercifully) censored one on YouTube.

Heald also reminded would-be streakers that even if the watchful eyes of the crew don't deter nudity, there's always the chance that there will be a boat nearby.

"If you wake up [and] pull the curtains open from your Ocean View window, 100 plus people getting on the tender boat can see it all," warned Heald.

Heald wrote that a commenter he called "L" experienced just such an exposure recently on the Carnival Magic in Belize.

Heald's followers piped up with their own eyeball-scorching experiences of surprise nudity during cruise vacations. More than a few added that most cruise ship balconies are also visible to neighboring units through narrow gaps next to dividing screens. When you peer through those cracks, it's sometimes possible to see a reflection of your neighbors in window glass or in the glass on the balcony balustrade.

Though Carnival's warning seems to urge balcony-goers to cover up, lovebirds might find it interesting to note that rival Royal Caribbean  put out a press release  in 2012 touting a survey of cruise passengers that found that "24% cite their balcony as the place onboard where they would most like to be intimate." And Royal Caribbean didn't discourage that temptation in the slightest.

Come to think of it, neither did Carnival's Heald—he only pointed out that you could be seen in all your glory. 

So what if you don't mind that?

PrivaSea Balconies mini review

I know there's been some discussion on these boards about the PrivaSea balconies (balconies set within the hull of the ship) and wanted to share our experience. We were on the March 23rd NCL Jade Southern Caribbean sailing and spent 10 days in a PrivaSea balcony cabin 8522.

We were actually pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed this type of balcony. It was definitely private in regards to not having our neighbors peer over onto our balcony and vice versa. We were completely shielded from any wind (and there was lots of wind on our sea days). It gave us a good balance of sun and shade. We actually felt like we used our balcony more on this cruise then any other.

So would I ever book this type of cabin again?...Absolutely! :)

In my video below there are several shots of us using the balcony. If you don't feel like watching the whole video, most of the shots can be found about half way through and another one towards the end of the video which probably shows the balcony the best.

I hope this mini review helps put anyones mind at ease who may have doubts like I did, about being in one of these balconies.

Thank you!!! We have booked a Priva-Sea balcony on the Gem deck 9 for our upcoming 11 night cruise and have been researching and can’t find a lot of information! We were actually contemplating moving to a regular balcony but hate that everyone can see me/ I can see everyone! I had this type of cabin on a QM2 transatlantic, and loved how sheltered it is from the wind. It would be a great cabin for the Caribbean too. Even though you get plenty of light, you don't get as much direct sun, so your cabin might be a little bit cooler without having to pull the drapes. Definitely found it just as good as the wide open balconies.

Usually I was out of the cabin during the theatre shows but one night there was some sort of crew raffle event with numbers being called out into the speakers that penetrated through the floor loudly to my cabin on deck 8 (I was in 8024). Went on for an hour after midnight. It wasn't pleasant. :(

Other than that one experience, it was fine.

Usually I was out of the cabin during the theatre shows but one night there was some sort of crew raffle event with numbers being called out into the speakers that penetrated through the floor loudly to my cabin on deck 8 (I was in 8024). Went on for an hour after midnight. It wasn't pleasant. :(   Other than that one experience, it was fine.

10 Things to Never Do on a Cruise Ship Balcony

If you’re going on a cruise and have a balcony cabin, there are some cruise ship balcony rules that you need to know. Having a balcony cabin can really add to your enjoyment on a cruise.

However, there are some common sense guidelines as well as some less obvious rules to follow. Breaking some of these written & unwritten cruise rules can be dangerous, can result in fines or even getting kicked off the cruise ship!

In this post I share 10 cruise things to never do on a cruise ship balcony, from cruise policies to cruise passenger etiquette.

Things Not to Do on a Cruise Ship Balcony

1. never climb or stand on balcony railings.

There’s almost nothing more dangerous than standing or climbing on cruise balcony railings. Unfortunately, there have been cases of people falling overboard into the ocean or even the ship ship dock with disastrous outcomes.

While there have been cases of people being rescued at sea after going overboard on a cruise ship, this is not something to take a chance with.

Cruise lines have rules against climbing on balcony railings, and have been known to kick passengers off a cruise if they are caught.

2. Never Throw Anything Overboard

Cruise lines are now very conscious about protecting the oceans and do not condone throwing anything overboard. Never throw anything off your balcony including garbage, cigarette butts or anything else.

Cruise passengers have been disembarked for violating this important rule, especially when it was done with intention.

3. Don’t Go Outside on Your Balcony Without Clothing

Cruise ship verandas and balconies are not very private. There are cabins above and to the sides, as well as the top decks that can likely see onto your balcony. Even if it’s early morning or late at night, you might be surprised at who can see you, including cruise ship cameras.

Before heading out on your cabin balcony, put on some clothes or a bathrobe.

4. Don’t Keep Your Balcony Light On

It can be easy to forget this one, but don’t keep your cruise balcony light on all night long. Many verandas and balconies have an outdoor light that you may want to open when it’s dark. Just don’t forget to switch off the light when you o back into your room.

Some cruise ship passengers say that they’ve had their sleep disturbed by bright lights that have been left on by neighboring balcony cabins. It’s good cruise ship etiquette to try and be respectful of fellow passengers.

5. Never Leave Clothing Items on the Balcony

While many cruisers leave clothing and other items out to dry on the balcony, cruise ships actually caution against this for a few reasons.

Firstly, clothing and other items left outside on a cruise ship balcony can be a potential fire hazard. If a cigarette butt would ever be tossed off the side of the ship (although this is not allowed), there is the potential to start a fire.

Another reason is there’s a lot of wind on cruises, and clothes can be blown off the balcony into the ocean.

While this is less likely to become a problem when the ship is in port, don’t even think about when the ship is sailing.

For cruisers, something to be aware of is that the sea has a salty ocean mist. Clothes that are left outside can get salt stains as well.

6. Don’t Play Loud Music

There’s nothing wrong with bringing a bluetooth speaker to play your favorite music in your stateroom. However, avoid playing loud music on your cruise balcony as it can disturb others around you.

This is especially true if you’re somewhere where people are likely to be outdoors, taking in the nearby landscape or scenery. As an example, keep music off or low when viewing Norwegian Fjords or when viewing glaciers in Alaska .

7. Don’t Keep Your Balcony Door Open

In some cruise ship balcony cabins, you’ll have sliding patio style doors. It’s best to avoid leaving them open for long amounts of time. On many newer cruise ships, the air conditioning in your stateroom will turn off when the balcony door is open.

Something else to know, is that you should never open the front door to your cabin while your balcony door is also open. This creates a wind tunnel that might surprise you!

8. Don’t Have Loud Conversations

There’s an expression “voices carry” and this is definitely true on cruise ship balconies. Be aware that a balcony isn’t 100% private, and your neighbors can hear you if they’re outdoors too.

If your conversation is of a private nature, keep it quiet. Plus, avoid screaming or being too loud, to avoid disturbing others on the cruise.

9. Never Leave Kids Unsupervised on the Balcony

Cruise ship balconies are generally safe and railings are high. However, when it comes to children, they should always be supervised when out on the cruise cabin balcony.

Make sure to let kids know that they should never clim on the chairs or small tables, or onto the balcony railing.

In many cruise balcony cabins, there are ways to lock the balcony doors when inside (even from the top – ask your cabin attendant).

10. Never Smoke on a Cruise Ship Balcony

Most cruise ships have a rule that passengers cannot smoke on the cabin balconies. This wasn’t always the case.

Over a decade ago, there was a fire on the Star Princess that is thought to have started from a cigarette being tossed onto a balcony below. Although it was bad and there was a lot of damage, the crew onboard managed to put out the fire and the ship sailed to the closest port.

Since that time, cruise lines have made changes to the balconies to prevent this from happening again, as well as their fire prevention systems.

Nevertheless, many cruise lines now prohibit smoking any substance on a cruise ship balcony. Smoking cigarettes is allowed in designated smoking areas only.

Why the journey is the destination when it comes to Alaska cruises

They say getting there is half the fun. Usually, I disagree. When I travel, I want to get to where I’m going as quickly as possible to make the most of my time there. However, sailing Celebrity Edge on its maiden Alaska voyage from Seattle, I was all about the journey.

Staring up at the snow-capped mountains through the ship’s floor-to-ceiling windows and watching for wildlife in the icy waters below, I was mesmerized by the famed Last Frontier. And I realized that on an Alaska cruise , the journey is a destination.

Here’s why and what travelers should know about cruising Alaska.

Why is Alaska a popular cruise destination?

Alaska is a bucket-list destination for many people. Some may wait their whole lives for the trip. While Alaska Airlines and other carriers fly throughout America’s largest state , it isn’t as easy to navigate as the Lower 48.

Cruises allow travelers to visit multiple destinations without taking separate flights, renting a car or moving from hotel to hotel. My Edge itinerary included stops in Ketchikan, which is surrounded by the lush Tongass National Forest ; the state capital of Juneau, which is only accessible by air or sea; and Skagway, home of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park . The ship also carefully navigated the stunning Endicott Arm fjord toward Dawes Glacier, a highlight of the trip.

The easy trip can also be more accessible for people with mobility issues and other disabilities. Like other cruise lines, Celebrity has a team dedicated to accessible cruising . Numerous guests on board my sailing used walkers, canes or wheelchairs. Plus, it’s just nice to be able to take in the dramatic coastlines from the comfort of a cozy cabin or lounge when it’s chilly outside.

Are cruises to Alaska worth it?

They can be. At last check, the lowest price on a seven-night Celebrity Edge Alaska Dawes Glacier sailing, roundtrip from Seattle, for the remainder of this summer is listed at $778 per person on the cruise line’s website, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. That does not include travel to or from Seattle nor any taxes or fees, which can balloon the bottom line on any cruise. Nor does it include promotional discounts, which are pretty much always available. After taxes and fees, that works to about $2,212 for two people or $1,106 per person. 

The cheapest seven-night Southbound Glacier sailing on the Edge’s sister ship, Celebrity Summit , is much less at $249 per person, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. It’s worth noting the Southbound voyage goes from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, not a round trip. Also the Summit is not an Edge-class ship , The Celebrity Edge is the first Edge class ship to sail Alaska; it was also the first ship in Celebrity’s most recent series, which also includes the new Celebrity Ascent . Edge-class ships were designed to bring guests closer than ever to their destinations, with their signature Magic Carpet cantilevered platform that extends beyond the ship’s edge and other features that bring the outside in. After taxes and fees, the Summit sailing adds up to about $1,231 for two people or about $615 a person.

Both are cheaper than flying between cities and staying at hotels for a week in Alaska, but they're also cheaper than other popular vacations. For example, seven nights at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort , a value resort at Walt Disney World , costs $955 for the room alone, including taxes and a summer promo deal. Adding seven days of park tickets, without park hopping, and the total becomes $2,195 for two people or about $1,098 per person, excluding food.

Meanwhile, cruises include all onboard meals – except optional specialty dining and alcohol. There are also a boatload of included activities, like nature talks, tai chi classes, guided arts and crafts, trivia, games and childcare. There’s live music available through the day and nightly stage shows. I sampled a little bit of everything, but for me, the best part of the ship was the views.

Inside Ascent: 3 takeaways from Celebrity Cruises' new ship

Do you see wildlife on an Alaskan cruise?

Yes. I saw whale spouts three times from the ship, though the whales didn’t breach above water. I also saw a handful of harbor seals and a dozen eagles from the ship and from shore. Bald eagles are so common in Alaska that a tour bus driver jokingly called them bald seagulls. There are 30,000 bald eagles in the state, according to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. 

I kept an eye out for bears on an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. I didn’t see any walking along the paved, wheelchair-accessible Nugget Falls Trail, but I did spot all sorts of spring buds and the most beautiful moss.

The ship’s onboard naturalist gave us a heads-up on what to look for and taught us about various species in presentations in the ship’s theater. She also broadcasted live on the ship’s TV channel and inside speakers while traveling through the Endicott Arm. However, her voice wasn’t carried on outside speakers to avoid potentially disturbing wildlife.

What is the best month to go on a cruise to Alaska?

The Alaska cruise season runs from late April to early October, though dates vary by cruise line. Guests who sail early or late in the season may find lower rates than during the height of the summer, but they may miss out on warmer weather.

It was in the 40s to 50s most days of my May sailing, and it rained on our Juneau day. The onboard naturalist warned that there is no bad weather in Alaska, only poor clothing choices.

How much should I budget for an Alaskan cruise?

You should pad your budget with several hundred extra dollars for excursions and dining off-ship. Both can be pricey but enriching. My Mendenhall Glacier excursion was just under $130, including transportation and an off-site Gold Creek Salmon Bake , with all-you-can-eat fresh salmon cooked over a wood-burning fire.  I’ve never had better fried fish than the local halibut at The Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan, and I will be dreaming of the sweet, plump red king crab at Tracy’s King Crab Shack in Juneau for years to come.  If you want freshly caught Alaska seafood, you’ll want to get it at port.

You may be able to spot whales from the cruise ship, but if you really want to go whale watching, salmon fishing, dog sledding, or get up close to glaciers, that’s generally going to require an excursion. Excursions offered through cruise lines tend to cost more than those booked independently, but booking through the cruise line can streamline payment and ensure that the ship won’t leave without you if the excursion runs late.

One port you can enjoy on the cheap is Skagway. You can explore several exhibits and historic buildings on your own, as part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. However many visitors splurge on a scenic train ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway up to the Canadian border and back.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a cruise?

Yes and no. The views throughout Alaska are breathtaking, and being able to enjoy them from your cabin any time of day feels luxurious. I loved waking up to mountains, thick with trees, outside my window and scanning the waters for marinelife before bed.

Just over 80% of Celebrity Edge’s staterooms have a balcony. I had an Infinite Veranda , which is unique to Edge-class ships. Rather than a traditional balcony with a sliding glass door, Infinite Verandas incorporate what would be exterior balcony space into the interior of the cabin and have a window that slides halfway down the exterior wall with the push of a button. I loved how much bigger it made the cabin feel and appreciated the extra climate-controlled living space. It was still chilly during my early season sailing, so I rarely put the window down and think I would have enjoyed a non-balcony, oceanview room just as much.

Of course, if you book an inside cabin, you can still enjoy the scenery from public areas of any ship. The Celebrity Edge brings the outside in with tons of windows, including in the buffet restaurant, Oceanview Cafe, where I spotted my first whale spout. In the back of the ship, there’s a relaxing mixed-use space called Eden with three stories of windows that I found myself drawn to daily. The solarium, with its tall windows and rows of lounge chairs, also offered expansive views. 

Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise?

Maybe. For a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the same U.S. port, like the one I was on, all you need is proof of citizenship. 

“According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth,” according to Celebrity.

Of course, not all Alaska cruises are closed-loop cruises. Some start or end in Vancouver, Canada. There are also cruises on several smaller U.S.-flagged cruise lines like Alaska Dream Cruises and Uncruise Adventures , which may not require passports depending on the itinerary.

Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

It’s possible, but because daylight hours are so long during the summer in Alaska, the best chance to see them would be on a cruise late in the season.

I woke up in the middle of the night a few times to look for Northern Light. I didn’t see any, but I heard passengers on a previous sailing spotted them. Then again, so did people all across the country during the solar storm earlier this month.

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.
