  • 2nd edition of the tournament to be held from March 16-19, 2023
  • Prize purse increased by 50% to USD 750,000
  • Leading Asian and Indian golfers set to participate

A galaxy of Asian Tour stars led by a strong homegrown contingent, will headline the second edition of The DGC Open presented by Mastercard. The event will be held at the venerable Delhi Golf Club from March 16-19, 2023.

The tournament, which in its very inaugural year was voted as the third best event on the 20-event schedule of the Asian Tour in the ‘Players Tournament of the Year’, will also see a massive enhancement of the prize purse, which goes up USD 500,000 to USD 750,000, a 50% increase in the prize money.

The event last year was won by Thailand’s Nitithorn Thippong, who had dashed Indian hopes as he pipped Ajeetesh Sandhu to the post by edging him out in a playoff after a thrilling finish. Since then, he has added a win from the International Series Singapore and finished fourth on the year-end Asian Tour Order of Merit. Nitithorn is all set to return this year as well as he looks to defend his title.

The field will have 132 players and players from around 25 countries are expected for the week.

“As the home of Indian golf with such a rich history and legacy, Delhi Golf Club has always believed in promoting excellence in golf and when we embarked on the journey of constituting our own Asian Tour event last year, it was a step in that direction. It is really exciting to see The DGC Open presented by Mastercard growing and becoming bigger in its second edition with increased prize money. I would like to thank Mastercard India for their continued support and Asian Tour for being wonderful partners,” said KK Bajoria, President, Delhi Golf Club”.

Indian players will look forward to the event as it gave them a lot of success with Ajeetesh Sandhu, a former winner on Asian Tour, coming close to adding a second Asian Tour title to his collection last year. He was runner-up while Gaganjeet Bhullar was fourth. Bhullar later in the season, became the first Indian to amass 10 titles on the Asian Tour, when he won the Mandiri Indonesia Open. Bhullar was also the top Indian on the Asian Tour Order of Merit at 14th position.

T“Mastercard’s philosophy is to engage with cardholders’ passions the world over. Sports such as golf have passionate followership in India. We are privileged to be the sponsors for the DGC Open for the second year, and we look forward to an excellent association with the iconic club,” said Gautam Aggarwal, Division President, South Asia, Mastercard.

The Delhi Golf Club has been called the “Home of Indian Golf” and has hosted international events for more than half a century, going back to 1964. Its products include a host of Arjun Award winners, Asian Games gold medallists like Shiv Kapur, and numerous Asian Tour winners.

It hosted the first Indian Open, the 1982 Asian Games and is renowned for its junior development programmes, which have given birth to many stars. It has also been at the forefront of promotion of women’s golf, having hosted several international events as well.

“The DGC Open presented by Mastercard is turning out to be a marquee event both in the Indian golf calendar as well as on the Asian Tour,” said Raj Khanna, Captain, Delhi Golf Club. “With the prize money increasing from US$500,000 last year to US$ 750,000 this year, the Delhi Golf Club is playing a key role in promoting high quality golf in India and encouraging the Indian youth to greater efforts towards success in an Olympic sport.”

India has more than a dozen players on the Asian Tour who have a full Tour card for the world’s third largest Tour, which will have close to USD 50 million in prize purse in 2023 with its schedule including a dozen International Series events and full field Tour events.

“After the resounding success of last year’s DGC Open presented by Mastercard, the Asian Tour is eagerly anticipating returning to the tournament this year,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO, Asian Tour. “The tournament will be the sixth stop of the season at one of our membership’s favourite venues, Delhi Golf Club. We thank both the club and Mastercard for once again making the event possible, and we have no doubt the event will again be one of the highlights of the year on our calendar.”

Indians’ liking for the course and The DGC Open presented by Mastercard was further strengthened by the tied-sixth place finish by three players, Mastercard Brand Ambassador Shiv Kapur, young gun Veer Ahlawat and Yuvraj Sandhu, who had a splendid season on the domestic Tour with five wins and a second place on the domestic PGTI Order of Merit.

The historic Delhi Golf Club course was first designed by five-time Open winner, Peter Thomson, and was later redesigned by the nine-time Major winner, Gary Player, who was present at the inaugural edition of The DGC Open presented by Mastercard. The 6,900-yard (approximately) iconic DGC is spread over 179 acres and nestled in the heart of Delhi.

DGC Open returns on packed 2023 first-half Asian Tour schedule with enhanced prize purse

The impressive schedule boasts a total of 11 tournaments contested over 14 weeks, starting with the $5 million pif saudi international..

  • The International Series will have its first visit to the Middle East with two inaugural tournaments in Oman and then Qatar in February
  • Asian Tour will return to Vietnam in seven years with a $2 million International Series event coming April
  • New Zealand Open makes a popular return to the calendar following a two-year COVID-19 enforced break in the first week of March

The second edition of the DGC Open will have an enhanced prize purse of $600,000, an increase of 20 per cent from the previous edition, when it is staged at the Delhi Golf Club from March 16-19 as part of the 2023 Asian Tour calendar . The inaugural edition was won by Thailand’s Nitithorn Thippong in his rookie season.

The 2023 schedule promises to be the finest start to a season the continental Tour has ever enjoyed, said a statement from the Asian Tour. The impressive schedule boasts a total of 11 tournaments contested over 14 weeks, starting with the $5 million PIF Saudi International – won so dramatically by American Harold Varner III this year when he holed a 92-foot eagle putt on the 72nd hole – at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, near Jeddah, from February 2-5.

In the ensuing two weeks, the Tour will then journey to two inaugural International Series tournaments in Oman and then Qatar – marking the first time the International Series will have visited the Middle East. Al Mouj Golf will host the former event, while Doha Golf Club will stage the latter.

These will be the first of an expanded 10 International Series events in 2023, with International Series stops to follow in Hua Hin, Thailand, in March, and Cam Ranh, Vietnam the following month. Thailand launched the highly successful International Series earlier this year and saw American Sihwan Kim triumph at Black Mountain Golf Club, while the Tour visits the spectacular KN Golf Links for the first edition of the Vietnam event. This will be the first time the Asian Tour will return to Vietnam in seven years.

The New Zealand Open makes a popular return to the calendar following a two-year COVID-19 enforced break in the first week of March at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown – the tournament’s home since 2014.

“We are very proud to announce the start of the 2023 season, hot off the heels of a tremendous 2022. It is fantastic to see us carry the momentum of the season we have just completed and start the new season at full pace,” said Asian Tour commissioner & CEO Cho Minn Thant.

“The Asian Tour is absolutely thrilled with how the schedule looks; it reaches a wide range of exciting destination, offers extremely lucrative purses, world class venues, and a great balance of established and new events. The PIF Saudi International, a truly global golfing event, is the perfect way to start the season and sets the tone for what will be, unquestionably, the strongest season in the history of the Asian Tour.”

The 2022 season, which saw 20 tournaments staged, came to a dramatic conclusion two weeks ago in Indonesia where Thailand’s Sarit Suwannarut stormed to an impressive victory, marking himself down as one to look out for next year, while Sihwan Kim secured the Asian Tour Order of Merit (OOM) title and Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent, the International Series OOM.

DGC Open 2022 golf: Gaganjeet Bhullar to lead the home charge as Asian Tour returns to India

The tournament will be the first Asian Tour event in India since November 2019.

Gaganjeet Bhullar GettyImages-1309023670

Golfers from 21 different countries, including top Indian players like Gaganjeet Bhullar , Jeev Milkha Singh , SSP Chawrasia , Shiv Kapur and Gaurav Ghei will be in action at the DGC Open 2022 , to be held at the Delhi Golf Club’s revamped Lodhi course from March 24 to 27.

The inaugural DGC Open will be the fourth tournament on the Asian Tour 2022-23 season after the Saudi International, Royal’s Cup and International Series Thailand. The Asian Tour is the premier men’s golf tour for Asian countries, barring Japan.

It will be the first international golf tournament to be held in India since the Panasonic Open India held at Gurgaon in November 2019. The last Asian Tour event to be held at the Delhi Golf Club, meanwhile, was also a Panasonic Open in 2018 – which was won by India’s Khalin Joshi .

Since then, the iconic Lodhi course has undergone a major redesign, overseen by South African golf legend Gary Player – a nine-time Major winner.

“I would give this course a nine out of 10,” Gary Player told Times of India . “This is a historic venue and one always feels hesitant about tweaking a classic course too much...but it has worked out very well.”

Gaganjeet Bhullar, who is currently India’s best-ranked golfer on the Asian Tour 2022-23 Order of Merit at 13, will spearhead the Indian challenge at the DGC Open. Bhullar finished fifth at the International Series Thailand earlier this month and is India’s most successful player on the Asian Tour with nine wins under his belt.

Rashid Khan (32), Karandeep Kochhar (33), nephew of Olympic medallist Abhinav Bindra, are the next-two best ranked Indians in the leaderboard after Bhullar and are both playing at The DGC Open.

USA's Paul Peterson, Bangladeshi golfer Siddikur Rahman and South Africa's Ian Snyman are some of the notable international golfers in the 138-strong field for the DGC Open 2022.

Sports news, videos and interviews, dgc open: khan closing in on first asian tour win in a decade.

Posted By Staff Writer on March 19, 2023

India’s Rashid Khan will have another fine opportunity to win his first Asian Tour title in nearly a decade on Sunday, Mar. 19 after he took the third-round lead today in The DGC Open presented by Mastercard, being played on the Lodhi Course at Delhi Golf Club (DGC).

Khan fired a four-under-par 68, impressively recovering from a double bogey on the first, to finish the day on 11 under for the US$750,000 event and a three-shot advantage over countryman Chikkarangappa S.

Chikkarangappa, who started the day with a three-shot lead and is in pursuit of first Asian Tour title, shot a 74.

Honey Baisoya carded a 65, the joint best low round of the week so far, to sit two back in a tie for third with fellow Indian Om Prakash Chouhan, who returned a 73, and Thailand’s Chapchai Nirat, in with a 71.

Khan won his first Asian Tour title here at DGC in 2014 at the SAIL-SBI Open, beating Siddikur Rahman from Bangladesh in a sudden-death play-off, and tasted victory again later that year at the Chiangmai Golf Classic but they remain his only two wins on the Asian Tour.

There have been opportunities to win since, including at DGC where he has an outstanding record, and last year he finished runner-up twice: first in the Mandari Indonesia Open and then in the Mercuries Taiwan Masters, where he lost in extra-time to Chinese-Taipei’s Chan Shih-chang.

“I am looking for a good round tomorrow and let the game talk,” said the 32 year old, the prolific winner of 11 titles on the Professional Golf Tour of India.

“These kind of rounds give you a lot of confidence, when I shot a bogey free round on day one I was happy. Then today on the first hole I was in the middle of the fairway off the tee and I ended up making a double so you know to come back and shoot that round gives you a lot of momentum. You know you are at the corner where your game is gonna come back.”

Lightning stopped played for 45 minutes when he was on the 11th, but it did little to distract him as when play resumed he holed a difficult 30 footer for birdie.

“I just tried to find the greens and give myself birdie opportunities, I holed really good putts today,” he added.

“Only used my driver once, which is very rare when I am playing DGC, I was just teeing off with my three iron, I am really enjoying this kind of play.”

After that opening double, he didn’t drop another shot, and birdied four of the next six holes, and another two on the back nine.

His fine DGC record, which may count for everything tomorrow, also includes a play-off loss against India’s Anirban Lahiri at the 2013 SAIL-SBI Open.

Khan said he has never seen playing partner Chikkarangappa miss so many putts.

“I wouldn’t say it was a bad day, I hit the ball well, I putted well, it’s just that I lost a little bit of speed on the green, probably the weather, just a little bit of rain slowed the greens,” said Chikkarangappa, who frustratingly made two bogeys and 16 pars.

“It’s okay, I have another 18 holes to go. I just need to go out there and repeat yesterday’s round, nothing else, if I do that, like I said my putter was cold, I just need to get that hot at the beginning of the round. If I do that I think it will be a good match tomorrow.”

Baisoya’s round was picture perfect with no dropped shots and three birdies on the front and four on the back.

Filipino’s Miguel Tabuena and Justin Quiban have an outside chance tomorrow after shooting rounds of 72 and 73 today to lie seven behind the leader, along with England’s Matt Killen, in with a 74.

Asian Tour returns at The DGC Open presented by MasterCard

Asian Tour returns at The DGC Open presented by MasterCard In India | golfedge | India’s Favourite Online Golf Store | golfedgeindia.com

Asian Tour members are looking forward to another ‘Priceless’ experience when they return to the historic Delhi Golf Club for the second edition of The DGC Open presented by Mastercard.

As well as confirming the continuation of Mastercard as the presenting sponsor, organisers have announced a 50 per cent increase in the total purse, up from US$500,000 in 2022 to US$750,000 this year.

To be staged over the Lodhi Course from March 16-19 and promoted by Delhi Golf Club, The DGC Open presented by Mastercard will be the sixth leg on the 2023 Asian Tour schedule.

In addition, Nitithorn Thippong from Thailand will return to defend the title he won in thrilling fashion last year after a sudden-death play-off against India’s Ajeetesh Sandhu.

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO of the Asian Tour, said: “Delhi Golf Club has been the traditional home of golf in India and a popular venue among our members for many years, and they’re always excited to be able to go back to such an iconic stage.

dgc open asian tour

Officials at today’s press conference announcing Mastercard’s support of The DGC Open.

“We’re also grateful to the sponsors for their support. Mastercard were an outstanding partner last year and their slogan ‘priceless’ is a fitting way to describe their sponsorship of the event.”

Last year’s inaugural event was especially poignant as it signalled the return of the Asian Tour to India for the first time in nearly 2½ years following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cho said: “The addition of The DGC Open presented by Mastercard to our 2022 schedule was a massive boost for the Asian Tour and something we’d been working very hard on behind the scenes to facilitate.”

As a mark of how popular The DGC Open presented by Mastercard was last year, it was ranked third in a poll by players voting in the best tournament category.

“As the home of Indian golf with such a rich history and legacy, Delhi Golf Club has always believed in promoting excellence in golf and when we embarked on the journey of constituting our own Asian Tour event last year, it was a step in that direction,” said KK Bajoria, President, Delhi Golf Club.

“It is really exciting to see The DGC Open presented by Mastercard growing and becoming bigger in its second edition with increased prize money. I would like to thank Mastercard India for their continued support and Asian Tour for being wonderful partners.”

Added Gautam Aggarwal, Division President, South Asia, Mastercard: “Mastercard’s philosophy is to engage with cardholders’ passions the world over. Sports such as golf have passionate followership in India. We are privileged to be the sponsor for The DGC Open for the second year, and we look forward to an excellent association with the iconic club.”

Last year Nitithorn defeated Sandhu on the first hole of the play-off to claim his maiden Asian Tour title.

“To win on the Asian Tour … I’ve been waiting a long time for this,” said 25-year-old Nitithorn, who led the chorus of approval for the overhaul of the Lodhi Course undertaken by nine-time Major champion Gary Player with a focus on revamping the greens and reshaping bunkers.

Comparing the course to how it was seven years earlier on his previous appearance there, Nitithorn said: “The new greens are awesome. I like the many slopes … sometimes a bit difficult to read, but the green condition is really good.”

After ending in a tie for sixth, Indian Shiv Kapur, a four-time Asian Tour champion and winner of the 2017 Panasonic Open India at DGC, succinctly summed up the challenges of the venue.

“On a course like this lined with trees and bushes, there’s no margin for error. One loose shot here is two, three shots gone and the big numbers can really hurt you,” he said.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

dgc open asian tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

dgc open asian tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

dgc open asian tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

dgc open asian tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

dgc open asian tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

dgc open asian tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

dgc open asian tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
