Where to rest on your idaho road trip, stay busy while on the road with idaho bingo.

Are you feeling envious of all the amazing road trips your friends seem to be posting about online lately? These days, you can’t go online without being bombarded by pictures of everyone else’s latest escapades to jaw-dropping destinations.

A group of friends hiking along Fishhook Creek Trail near Redfish Lake.

Maybe you are ready to witness some mind-blowing scenery in person rather than through the experiences of others. Since a camera cannot capture the smell of fresh pine trees or the feeling of a cool stream rushing over your feet, it’s time to unplug and create lasting memories. Get out there to see, hear, smell and feel it for yourself. To get started, we mapped out a road trip in Idaho for you with more adventure than most cross-country trips can offer.

A scene from the sand dunes in the summer.

Bruneau Dunes State Park is up first on this list of Idaho road-trip destinations and is an ideal place to begin your adventure. More than 12,000 years ago, the Bonneville flood waters receded here, and a large amount of sand was left behind. The wind transported the sand to Idaho’s Bruneau Basin, creating the present-day state park, Bruneau Dunes. This park is home to the highest single-structured sand dune in North America at 470 feet high. In addition to these sandy drifts, Bruneau is home to Idaho’s largest public telescope and two public observatories. Gaze at the stars, climb the staggering dunes or rent a sandboard and surf the family-friendly sands. Enjoy a scenic stop along the Snake River or visit Three Island Crossing State Park in Glenns Ferry on your way to another of Idaho’s geological wonders, Balanced Rock.

Travel Time to Next Destination

Bruneau Dunes State Park to Balanced Rock: 1 hour, 25 minutes (77.4 miles)

Getting to Balanced Rock

From Bruneau Dunes State Park, take State Highway 78 east to Interstate 84 in Hammett. Follow I-84 to Thousand Springs Scenic Byway (U.S. Route 30) and drive south toward Buhl. Follow signage south to Balanced Rock, taking Castleford Glenns Ferry Road to Balanced Rock Road.

2.   Balanced Rock

A picture of Balanced Rock.

Balanced Rock is a peculiar natural wonder. This famous rock weighs more than 40 tons, is 48 feet tall and stands on a base only three feet wide. Over time, the wind has slowly etched every crevice of this boulder to form one of nature’s most curious balancing acts. Park for a picnic and snap some pictures to add to your impressive and expanding Idaho trip photo album. For more fun, take a quick detour to hike around in one of the six units of Thousand Springs State Park —or discover more good times with a visit to the incredible Hagerman Fossil Beds —before setting back out on the Thousand Springs Scenic Byway toward Shoshone Falls.

Balanced Rock to Shoshone Falls: 50 minutes (33.5 miles)

Getting to Shoshone Falls

Starting from Balanced Rock, follow signs northeast toward Buhl. Then, drive the Thousand Springs Scenic Byway (U.S.-30) southeast to Twin Falls. Follow area signage north to reach Shoshone Falls.

3.   Shoshone Falls

A woman standing beneath a towering waterfall.

Did you know that Idaho has a waterfall taller than Niagara Falls? Shoshone Falls is a jaw-dropping 212 feet tall and is at its best during the spring and early summer when the water flow is high. The Shoshone Falls and Dierkes Lake Complex is operated by the city of Twin Falls and has playgrounds, groomed picnic areas, hiking trails and a spot for swimming. Plan to visit the scenic overlook for an unforgettable family photo from your road trip in Idaho while at Shoshone Falls. On the way to your next stop, experience other rocky (and historic) wonders at two destinations you may need to see to believe: nearby City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park on the City of Rocks Backcountry Byway .

Shoshone Falls to the Museum of Idaho: 2 hours, 25 minutes (159 miles)

Getting to the Museum of Idaho

Travel on I-84 east to Interstate 86, and then continue on Interstate 15 North northeast to Idaho Falls.

The exterior of the Museum of Idaho with an American flag flying in front.

The Museum of Idaho is devoted to bringing first-rate exhibits to the Gem State. The museum preserves cultural and natural history by showcasing a variety of rotating exhibits and always-open options like Way Out West and the Marie Putnam Discovery Room for children. Journey into charming Idaho Falls, walk along the Snake River Greenbelt and seek out other community points of interest such as the nearby Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park or the Idaho Potato Museum , located about 30 minutes away in Blackfoot.

Museum of Idaho to Mesa Falls Visitor Center: 1 hours, 11 minutes (69.2 miles)

Getting to Mesa Falls

Take U.S. Route 20 northeast to Ashton. From there, drive the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway (State Highway 47 North) to Upper Mesa Falls Road, and follow signage to the falls.

A Travel Guide to the Ultimate Idaho Road Trip

Found within the expansive Caribou–Targhee National Forest, Mesa Falls offers a remarkable experience for visitors of all ages. Take a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk to view Upper Mesa Falls, then stroll the Mesa Falls Nature Trail and take a moderate hike down to Lower Mesa Falls. Don’t forget to stop by the visitors center, where you can learn about the geological history of the area and gain insights into local flora and fauna. Keep your camera handy, as photo opportunities abound around every turn. A short drive from Mesa Falls, visit Yellowstone Bear World and Harriman State Park to extend your time on this fantastic eastern stop to your road trip in Idaho.

Mesa Falls Visitor Center to Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve: 2 hours, 31 minutes (147 miles)

Getting to Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve

Drive the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway to U.S.-20, then head southeast on U.S.-20 and U.S. Route 26 toward Arco. Continue on U.S.-26 west past Arco to access the national monument and preserve. Please note some navigation devices may incorrectly direct visitors to dirt roads. If using navigation apps or devices, navigate to the Robert Limbert Visitor Center at 1266 Craters Loop Road, Arco, ID 83213. The visitor center and loop road are not accessible via any unpaved roads.

Craters of the Moon National Monument

Craters of the Moon spans 750,000 acres—roughly the same size as the state of Rhode Island. This vast landscape of otherworldly terrain includes lava tubes, cinder cones, fissures and plenty to do. Venture out for a 15-minute walk to the top of Inferno Cone for a view of the fascinating lava formations, or get a free permit from the visitors center and traverse the cave system formed through bygone volcanic activity underground at Indian Tunnel. Visit the nearby town of Arco to grab a bite to eat and check out a submarine in the desert on your Idaho road trip.

Craters of the Moon to Sawtooth National Recreation Area: 1 hour, 26 minutes (72.3 miles)

Getting to Sawtooth National Recreation Area

Take U.S.-26 southwest to Carey, then turn onto U.S.-20 West. Drive to State Highway 75 and continue north past Sun Valley to the recreation area.

A view of a mountain range.

The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is the epitome of Idaho exploration. In fact, this stunning location could be a vacation in and of itself. The area has 300 high-mountain lakes and 700 miles of trails to explore. You may struggle to choose just one day’s worth of activities, so stick around and scout out more if you have the time. Redfish Lake holds rich recreational opportunities complete with boating, fishing and hiking trails for beginners and more experienced outdoor recreationalists. Enjoy a different perspective of this area on a full- or half-day horseback ride with an outfitter like Redfish Corrals.

Sawtooth National Recreation Area to Hells Canyon National Recreation Area: 7 hours, 10 minutes (339.7 miles)

Getting to Hells Canyon National Recreation Area

Leaving the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, travel the Sawtooth Scenic Byway northwest to State Highway 21 near Stanley, then turn north on State Highway 55 and continue until you reach New Meadows. From New Meadows, take U.S. Route 95 to State Highway 71, and journey on to Hells Canyon Road. Follow marked recreation area access signage.

A shot of Hells Canyon from the middle of the water on a clear, sunny day.

At its highest point, America’s deepest river gorge dives a staggering 7,993 feet to the valley floor below. Hells Canyon carves its way along the Idaho–Oregon border next to the Seven Devils Mountain Range . While you are visiting this popular Idaho trip destination, be sure to take a guided raft excursion or jet boat tour between the giant slabs of green and black basalt walls of this mammoth canyon. Cambridge is the last stop for fuel, snacks and bathrooms before entering Hells Canyon. The town of Riggins offers food, groceries and limited lodging, as well as outdoor recreation and access to numerous outfitters and guides. Soak up the sun and scenery before setting off on your journey to Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area to Lake Coeur d’Alene: 7 hours, 35 minutes (375 miles)

Getting to Lake Coeur d’Alene

From Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, drive State Highway 71 south to Cambridge, and then take U.S.-95 north. Hop on the White Pine and Lake Coeur d’Alene scenic byways to reach your next destination.

9. Lake Coeur d’Alene

People stand along the water's edge at the City Park and Beach.

Lake Coeur d’Alene spans 26 miles and boasts more than 135 miles of shoreline. This international resort destination is home to the nearby Coeur d’Alene Resort , Silverwood Theme Park (the Northwest’s largest theme park) and a never-ending list of outdoor ventures. The city of Coeur d’Alene provides a peaceful place to stop with dining, shopping and a range of activities to explore and enjoy. Take a breather here and gear up for your last Idaho road-trip stop—the Route of the Hiawatha.

Getting to the Route of the Hiawatha

Make sure you keep your camera handy for this final portion of your epic Idaho road trip. The Route of the Hiawatha is a converted railroad line that winds for 15 miles along the Bitterroot Mountains. Ride your bike over seven towering trestle bridges and cruise through 10 tunnels. The trail is all downhill ( a good time for the whole family ) with shuttle buses to transport you back to the top. Visit Lookout Pass and appreciate the panoramic vistas offering views of the surrounding mountains and lush forests, or check out historic Wallace’s museums, tours and restaurants. Day 1. Start Your Northern Idaho Adventure By Going  Camping At Priest Lake

Priest Lake is largely considered to be “Idaho’s Crown Jewel” , and for good reason!

A hub for pretty much all summer sports, this lake provides ample opportunity to get out on the water and enjoy the sunshine. Here are some activities and suggestions in and around Priest Lake:

Campgrounds: There are three sections of Idaho’s Priest Lake State Park : Dickensheet, Indian Creek, and Lionhead. Each provides exceptional camping opportunities to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors.

Activities: Rent a canoe or kayak at the Lionhead Boat Launch, swim at Indian Creek’s lakefront beach, or float on the river near Dickensheet Campground. Click here to discover the full list of recreational activities provided at Priest Lake.

For the more adventurous folks, lake dwellers can take a boat ride through the northside thoroughfare to reach Upper Priest Lake , which is only accessible by waterway or hiking.

Here, there are serene beaches, calm waters, and a slower pace compared to the exciting Priest Lake. Come here for a picnic to enjoy the scenery!

Food: Grab a Beer and casual dinner at the Moose Knuckle or a fancier meal at Elkin’s Resort or Cavanaugh’s Restaurant .

Day 2.  Explore The Beautiful Sandpoint, Idaho

Sandpoint, Idaho is one of the quintessential recreation hubs in Northern Idaho.

Located on the shoreline of Lake Pend Oreille, visitors can enjoy proximity to the beach, but also a quick drive to three separate mountain ranges for some backcountry exploring.

Sandpoint provides all the conveniences of a large town with the cozy feel of a friendly neighborhood community.

Here are some activities to try in and around the city:

Indulge Your Inner Cowboy/Cowgirl at Western Pleasure Guest Ranch

This traditional ranch has been family-owned and operated since its very beginning in the 1940s.

Experience a classic dude ranch vacation with their week-long programs – all-inclusive with lodging, food, and adventures in the countryside!

We were so happy to roam around their beautiful ranch, take a trail ride with Danielle, and see a tiny new baby horse!

You could really tell that horses were a way of life here and that the animals and people alike thrived at this gorgeous ranch outside of Sandpoint, Idaho!

Northern Idaho Itinerary - Western Pleasure Guest Ranch, Sandpoint

Enjoy The Sandpoint City Beach Park

The Sandpoint City Beach is a perfectly manicured 22-acre park conveniently located a few blocks from Sandpoint’s downtown.

Parking is free and there is ample beach front, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and more to keep you busy all day long. Get up early and watch the sunrise on the Kaniksu Mountains!

Stroll The Streets Of Downtown Sandpoint

One of the most active outdoor retail sectors in Northern Idaho , there are many beautiful artisan crafts, outdoor apparel, and restaurants to keep you busy in downtown Sandpoint.

Try some interesting ice cream flavors like blood orange and basil at Panhandle Cone & Coffee , grab a beer and watch the game at MickDuff’s Brewing , or indulge in a delicious dinner at Thai Nigiri.

One of our favorite coffee shops (we went like 3 times!) was Evan’s Brothers Coffee Roasters , where we met up with a few other photographers talking about how beautiful Idaho is!

Day 3. Explore Farragut State Park

Farragut State Park was originally a naval training facility and has been converted into an amazing North Idaho state park with camping, swimming, boating, and world-class frisbee golf courses.

Farragut is easy to get to from larger cities like Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene and provides plenty of restaurants, accommodations and activities nearby. Here are some things to do in the park:

Tree To Tree Idaho Adventure Ropes Course

These new and state of the art adventure courses are perfect for all ages. From fun kid’s courses to a challenging 60-foot high route, you can test your agility and climbing skills here!

One thing we appreciated about this course is that they use high-tech magnetized belays to keep you in the trees. Essentially, this means there is no room for human error, and you are ALWAYS hooked in somewhere on the course!

This belay security gave me (Emily) so much confidence on the courses. I’m usually a cautious person, and a little afraid of heights, but just this extra bit of knowledge that I was safe gave me the courage to go all in.

I was talking for hours after we finished about how unafraid I was! Thanks, Tree to Tree Idaho for creating such a fun and challenging course!

Stay In The Park: Try Backcountry Yurt Camping In Idaho!

Hike and Swim Around The Park

The park has several trails to choose from, ranging from shoreline paths to trails up in the mountains nearby. If you’re looking for a trail with a refreshing ending, try the shoreline trail that ends at Beaver Bay Beach for a celebratory dip in the lake!

Beaver Bay Beach is a perfect day-use destination because it sits in a protected cove, away from the rest of Lake Pend Oreille. This means calmer waters, shallow areas perfect for families, and plenty of sandy beach front to enjoy all afternoon!

Emily Mandagie at Beaver Bay Beach, Farragut State Park, Northern Idaho

Explore Idaho’s Museum At The Brig

One of the few naval training structures remaining at Farragut State Park, this building is now converted into a museum sharing memorabilia from the recruits here involved in basic training.

Videos, uniforms, and interactive exhibits are only some of the interesting things you can find here!

Day 4. Silverwood Theme Park

Silverwood is the Northwest’s largest theme park! Just 30 minutes south of Sandpoint and 30 minutes north of Coeur d’Alene, this convenient attraction is the perfect getaway for summer fun in Northern Idaho.

With one admission ticket, adventure seekers can enjoy two parks in one;  the vintage turn-of-the-century charm of Silverwood and the surf-loving vibe of Boulder Beach theme park are located right beside one another.

Visitors can also choose to stay at Silverwood Theme Park’s Campground  which provides space for 71 tent-sites and 132 full hook-up spaces! If you choose to stay in the RV park, you also get discounted park tickets!

To fully enjoy a day at the park, here’s our Theme Park Packing List:

  • Water Bottle
  • Quick-dry clothing
  • Waterproof shoes or sandals

Day 5. Experience The Rich Culture Of Coeur d’Alene On Your Northern Idaho Itinerary

Coeur d’Alene is the largest city in Northern Idaho. This bustling city is located at the foot of the Coeur d’Alene National Forest which means you are never far from great bars AND amazing forests!

Hike The Trails In Tubbs Hill

There are several hiking trails to discover around this 120-acre park in the middle of the city.

You can hike to the top of the hill (though the views are covered in trees, you still get a sense of accomplishment!), find hidden beaches for a surprise dip, or hang out at sunset and watch the colors light up the sky over Lake Coeur d’Alene.

On the west side of the park (The Coeur d’Alene Resort side) are cliffs that are a popular location for cliff jumping. If you’re up for a thrill, we recommend checking it out!

*Note – When cliff jumping, always test the depth of the water beforehand and check for hidden rocks underwater. Better safe than sorry!

Fly Through The Trees At Timberline Adventures

Timberline Adventures is the all-inclusive, hassle-free Coeur d’Alene adventure you have been waiting for!

Visitors meet at their downtown facility to get oriented and geared up, then take a shuttle to the zip lining site only 12 miles away. Once at the property near Beauty Bay, part of the fun is riding in one of their zippy ATV’s and speeding up the mountainside to your first zip lining location.

They do everything for you, and your only job is to have fun!

Take A Lake Coeur d’Alene Dinner Boat Cruise

To beat the summer heat, try checking out one of Lake Coeur d’Alene’s iconic dinner cruises.

Aboard the boat, we were able to see interesting and unique features of the lake like the Floating Green, several bays, beautiful houses, and fun restaurants on the water.

The captain acts as a fun tour guide, giving you fun facts and history about places as you go by.

Aboard a dinner cruise, there is a resident chef that provides a gourmet buffet with more food than you can handle! As the sun set, we were able to sit up on the deck of the boat and watch the sunset with the sea breeze blowing and a coffee in hand.

This is the perfect activity for a date night, family get-together, and everything in between!

Grab Some Water Sport Rentals On The Coeur d’Alene Boardwalks

Too hot for a hike? Get yourself out on Lake Coeur d’Alene, and better yet, go with some fun gear! Take your pick of paddle boards, kayaks, and more at Coeur d’Alene Water Sports , located on the boardwalks just south of the City Park & Beach.

If you’re feeling extra fancy, try parasailing around the lake to feel the wind in your hair, or a scenic floatplane ride for 360 views of the surrounding area!

Want a soak all to yourself? Discover some hot springs in Idaho for a fun and different approach to summer dips!

Experience Wine Tasting at Beverly’s Restaurant + Local Wineries

Beverly’s Restaurant provides the Inland Northwest with some of the finest dining experiences, wine lists, and so much more. The arrival at the restaurant alone will leave a lasting impression!

Take the elevator in the Coeur d’Alene Resort up to the 7th floor and immediately be greeted with an impressive floor to ceiling display of local and regional wines.

Visitors can book a private wine tasting in one of their several cellars and choose from the best wines in the region. When Berty and I visited Beverly’s, we were lucky enough to sit in on a private tasting with Clearwater Canyon Cellars!  Their newly released wines into Beverly’s wine list is exciting and highly anticipated!

Eat Your Heart Out At Coeur d’Alene’s Many Summer Food Events

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho hosts many events throughout the year, but especially during the summertime! From farmer’s markets, outdoor concerts, film festivals, and sports contests, there’s something interesting for everyone to enjoy.

You can find a full calendar list of events here , to help you plan your Coeur d’Alene weekend itinerary around your favorite community activities.

When we visited Coeur d’Alene, we were lucky to come during the all-American barbecue event of the summer. From The Ashes: An American Smoked Fire and Food Adventure showcased some of the best grill masters from around the country in an all-you-can-eat afternoon of any kind of meat imaginable. It’s safe to say Berty was covered in BBQ sauce just 20 minutes after we arrived. Haha!

Day 6. Get Lost In The Mountain Town Of Wallace, Idaho

Wallace, Idaho is a historic mountain town in North Idaho, with a small but mighty population of around 1,000 residents. This North Idaho town is known for being the town that produced the most silver of any other silver mines in the United States!

While mining is still at the heart of this community, Wallace is growing in popularity for being a hub for adventure in the Northern Idaho Panhandle. Here are some things you can do around town:

Visit The Center of The Universe: Sitting in the middle of 6th street in downtown Wallace is a plaque that marks the “Center Of The Universe”.

No one has yet to debunk this claim with hard scientific evidence, so for all we know, it could be true! Make sure to look both ways in the street when snapping a pic at this historic Idaho spot!

Hike The Historic Pulaski Tunnel Trail: Take a quick jaunt up this 4-mile round trip hike to experience the real escape route of a firefighting team in the 1910s.

Plaques line the trail so you can read interesting facts about how this team escaped the flames of an oncoming forest fire and hid in an old mining tunnel to survive!

Want To Stay In The Area? Discover This Unique North Idaho Fire Lookout!

Day 7. Finish Off Your Northern Idaho Itinerary At Lookout Pass

One of the most popular activities to do at Lookout Pass in the summertime is to take the historic Route of the Hiawatha Bike Trail .

You can buy tickets at the Lookout Pass Lodge and rent all the proper equipment necessary for the journey. Drive your bikes over to the trailhead just 5 miles away, show your ticket, and get riding!

The Hiawatha Trail is a 15-mile downhill ride through 10 train tunnels and over 7 sky-high trestles.

Throughout the journey are interesting info boards to share historic events, fascinating landscapes, and fun facts to make your ride interactive and fun for the whole family.

Idaho’s North-South Road: US 95

There really is only one way to travel north-south through the Idaho Panhandle: it’s US 95. That’s why this road is known simply as the North-South Road. My trip covers the journey from the Palouse region at Lewiston, north to Sandpoint, via Moscow and Coeur d’Alene.

My drive up US 95 through Idaho began on a portion of the road that used to be US 95.  Now it’s known as the Spiral Road overlooking Lewiston.  This curvy highway requires you to negotiate 64 curves on an 1,800 foot climb.  No wonder, in 1977, after sixty years of that craziness, the state opened a bypass — the current US 95 out of Lewiston, which is easier to drive, but a lot less fun.  You can read about my drive up the Spiral Road here .

As you leave Lewiston and head north, you’ll be passing through one corner of the Palouse…

… a bucolic patch of rolling, grassy hills, dotted with barns and grain silos.  A scene like this one is not uncommon.  While I didn’t find this barn on US 95 itself, it was just a short drive off the main highway, on a road labeled Old US 95.  While I only traveled a short part of it, you might find that this road provides a good alternative to the highway, north of the town of Genesee.

Moscow, the home of the University of Idaho, provides a great excuse to stop.  This is an idyllic college town, with a clean, busy Main Street business district.  It will make you want to move to the mountains.  You can read more about my visit to Moscow, Idaho here .

North of Moscow, there’s one scenic area that I didn’t have time to explore, but I wish I had.  Check your map for Mary McCroskey State Park.  The main road through this largely undeveloped park is called Skyline Drive — and admit it, any road called Skyline Drive is probably pretty spectacular.  You may need a 4-wheel-drive or high-clearance vehicle to drive the entire road.

The biggest town you’ll encounter on the entire drive (aside from Boise, much further south), is Coeur d’Alene.  This is Idaho’s vacation getaway town, thanks to the lake of the same name.  I’ve been to Coeur d’Alene a couple of times, and to be honest, both times I found it to be too crowded with tourists and traffic to be enjoyable.  If I was staying in town, I’d probably have another opinion — but if you’re just passing through, it can be a slow journey filled with traffic and traffic lights.

I took this picture along Coeur d’Alene Lake Drive, near Bennett Bay.  There’s a nice overlook at this spot, just down the hill from Interstate 90.  You can also venture into the town for all the tourist-related businesses you could hope for, as well as nice views of, and recreation on, Coeur d’Alene Lake.

If you have some extra time in this area, you may want to check out the scenic drive around Coeur d’Alene Lake, which follows Idaho Highways 97, 3, and 6, around the lake’s east side.

good road trip places near me

Escape the sprawl of Coeur d’Alene, and your next stop will probably be Sandpoint, Idaho.  Yes, that’s a replica of the Statue of Liberty, standing watch over Lake Pend Oreille.  The statue is a must-see attraction, and the town itself is quite nice.  Sandpoint is the biggest city on the lake, so if you’re planning on any lake-related recreation, it’s your best bet for accommodations, food, and gas.

You can read more about my visit to the Statue of Liberty at Sandpoint, Idaho here .

US 2 joins US 95 at Sandpoint, for the drive north.  Instead of heading up, then over into Montana, I decided to go over and then up, using scenic Idaho Route 200, which skirts the edge of Lake Pend Oreille.  If you do choose to continue north on US 95, there’s only one more town, Bonners Ferry, and then the Canadian border.  Beyond the international line, the towns of  Cranbrook and Creston, BC aren’t too far.

The Bottom Line

A drive up (or down) US 95 through Idaho provides a great road trip.  The scenery is beautiful, mile after mile, and you’ll have access to some stunning lakes and enjoyable small towns along the way.

US 95 runs parallel to the state’s western border, for the most part, from the Boise area to the Canadian border. It connects all of the major towns and cities in northern Idaho, and it’s really your only option for a north-south route through the state.

The McConnell Mansion once belonged to William J. McConnell. Before settling in Moscow in 1878 at 40 years old, he had diverse roles including being a gold miner, farmer, rancher, educator, and a member of the Oregon Legislature. In Moscow, he started a general store and later ventured into agricultural businesses like grain warehouses. In 1

However, the 1893 national depression led to the collapse of his businesses, and he lost his mansion. In 1966, Latah County received the mansion as a donation. Today, it’s listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Summer may be over, but this city is livelier than ever with an abundance of fall festivities, outdoor recreation, football games, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and so much more.

5. The Palouse

alt

One of Idaho's most stunning natural wonders, the Palouse region consists of gorgeous rolling farmland that seems to go on forever. In the spring and summer, the landscape is lush and green. In fall, the Palouse transforms into endless fields of gold. It's not the type of fall scenery that first comes to mind when you think of fall in Idaho, but it's absolutely breathtaking.

6. The Boise River

alt

We know Boise is already featured on the list, but the Boise River deserves an entry all of its own. After all, there's no better time to take advantage of this prime fly-fishing destination. Lined with deciduous trees, fall at the Boise River is a spectacular sight as the leaves change colors. Flowing right through Idaho's largest metropolitan area, this river is like an autumnal oasis in our own backyard.

9 Awesome Day Trips To Take In Idaho This Year

Discover some of the most beautiful and memorable day trips in Idaho, perfect for a one-day adventure or a three-day weekend.

Idaho is a gorgeous state, but sometimes planning your next adventure can be a little daunting - there are so many choices! We've compiled some of the most beautiful day trips in Idaho, from beloved destinations and scenic road trips for the whole family to a few gorgeous outings you perhaps have never thought of. While any of these can be done of the course of one day, to make the most of the journey, we definitely recommend venturing out on a three-day weekend if you can! Start creating a lifetime of memories by taking one (or more) of these unforgettable Idaho day trips:

1. Explore the City of Rocks National Reserve.

alt

Beautiful, unique, and perfectly situated to be easily explored by nearly every Southern Idaho local, City of Rocks is definitely a bucket list worthy day trip. This geologic wonderland is not only a historic, rocky playground for all ages, it's also surprisingly idyllic in every season. Spring is especially rewarding for the nature lover, and visitors will be treated to small streams and creeks bubbling up from hidden nooks and crannies. And if one day isn't quite long enough (hint: it won't be!), camping is available as well. The best part is this fantastic area is gorgeous no matter the season!

2. Spend the day wining and dining at a local vineyard.

alt

Idaho has no shortage of picture-perfect vineyards that produce delicious wines, most of which can be found in the Southern half of the state. But there's something to be said for spending the day enjoying fabulous food, sampling new creations, and enjoying great company! Colter's Creek Vineyard and Winery in Juliatta (pictured) is one of many family-run, sustainable options around the state that offers tours and special events, and they even have a tasting room right in Moscow. But if you want to make an even longer trip of exploring Idaho's vineyards, this wine tour is the perfect way to (safely) indulge while enjoying Idaho's bounty.

3. Visit the magical Thomas E. Ricks Gardens in Rexburg.

alt

Sometimes, the best places to enjoy are the simplest! How about a special day out at a lush, colorful botanical garden? While the Thomas E. Ricks Gardens at BYU-Idaho aren't traditional by any means, they sure are stunning! Ten breathtaking acres of fountains, ponds, waterfalls, pavilions, and charming flower beds - all in one place. This is another perfect addition to your Idaho bucket list.

4. Take a day trip to a forgotten ghost town (or three) within Land of the Yankee Fork State Park.

alt

Because why not? This cluster of ghost towns (Custer, Bayhorse, and Bonanza) makes up one of Idaho's newest (and yet oldest) state parks, with plenty of historical remnants and scenic mountain hikes to delight the average traveler. If you've ever wanted to explore Idaho's ghost towns, this is the perfect place to start! Land of the Yankee Fork State Park is a (literal) gold mine for anyone who loves Idaho history.

5. Hike to the forgotten city of Boulder City and its secret lakes.

alt

Speaking of ghost towns...A lost city, an abandoned mine, a rugged trail , and endless beauty combine just outside of Sun Valley for an unforgettable trip into Idaho's beautiful Boulder Mountains. The pinnacle lakes here - while a challenge to reach - are well worth the determination.

6. Drive the breathtaking Salmon River Scenic Byway.

alt

Few things kick off a fantastic weekend quite like a road trip, and this 161-mile journey through Central Idaho is one of the state's finest. Incredible history, stunning natural beauty, wilderness adventure, and some of the wildest landscapes Idaho has to offer all collide in this truly magnificent journey - complete with off-road options and hot springs galore. If you live in the area, you can drive the Salmon River Scenic Byway in one day, although you'll have a hard time not stopping every few minutes to enjoy the views!

7. Immerse yourself in nature at the biggest natural spring in Idaho.

alt

While the quaint, snow-covered sight of Johnny Sack's historic cabin is a must-see across the water in winter, the dense trees and bounty of natural beauty surrounding Big Springs in Island Park is absolutely divine in every season. Multiple hiking paths will carry you into the lush trees, and the end reward - the crisp sight of the blue-green water of Big Springs itself - is incredibly rejuvenating. Keep your eyes peeled for moose!

8. Kick off your boots in Idaho City.

alt

Of all the Wild West towns dotting the state, Idaho City is an absolute gem. Charming, welcoming, resilient, and full of rugged, historic beauty, there's something new to discover and learn around every corner! Dress up in saloon garb and reenact a saloon scene for the camera. Camp in a yurt. Explore the historic remnants of decades past. Take an auto tour of the Ponderosa Pine scenic byway. Hot spring it up au naturale or in luxury. Go for a hike. Grab some pie and finger steaks...take your pick! You won't regret it.

15 Best Day Trips from Moscow

Moscow, the sprawling Russian capital, is a city that’s both full of history and contemporary culture.

This is the centre of the Russian world, a city that armies have invaded, where nations have clashed and where revolutions have played out through the centuries.

It’s a city on the fringe of Europe, but a place that is very much at the heart of European history and politics, and for visitors, it can be a complex and enthralling destination to visit.

As much as there is to see and to do in the city itself, there is just as much to experience on day trips from Moscow too.

While Russia is undoubtedly an expansive country, and many of the better-known cities such as St Petersburg or Volgograd are hundreds and hundreds of miles away, there are many more unknown and unusual destinations to visit within a few hours’ drive of the capital.

Immerse yourself in the Russian countryside, visit war memorials, battlefields and the lavish estates of the former Russian nobility. There are rural villages, grand Orthodox Monasteries and the chance to see Russian life outside of the city first-hand.

Here are the best day trips from Moscow.

Korolev, Russia

Located just an hour north of the Moscow city centre, Korolev is an area that is almost a suburb of the expansive capital, but has retained its own unique identity. During the Soviet era, this was one of the most important industrial areas in the country, because this was the base for Soviet Space Exploration.

During World War II, the factories here produced anti-tank guns that helped keep the Soviet Union in the fight. After Germany was defeated, the factories and research centres began to focus on space.

The city became a ‘Science City’ as skilled workers from across the Union came here to settle and to launch the space programme. It became one of the more affluent areas in the country, and today, that distinction can still be seen on the streets and in the buildings.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, Korolev remained the headquarters of Russian space travel and still hosts Russian Mission Control.

2. Borodino

Borodino, Russia

A two-hour drive to the west of Moscow is the battlefield of Borodino. This is a place that is revered in Russian history, and which perhaps should be much more well-known in wider European history too, because this is where the infamous French General Napolean Bonaparte fought the Russians during his invasion in 1812.

Although the French won the Battle of Borodino and went on to capture Moscow, this was the beginning of the end for Napolean, as he went on to be ravaged by the Russian Winter and was forced to retreat soon after.

Just outside the small village of Borodino is the green and grassy field where the battle was fought. On top of a substantial hill is a lasting monument to the important event.

Kolomna, Russia

Located to the south-east of Moscow is the city of Kolomna, which in comparison to the Russian capital is very much a small-town escape.

This is one of the oldest Russian cities in the region and there is a long and intriguing history to be discovered in the museums and monasteries.

Interestingly, the city was off-limits for much its tenure under the Soviet Union, because it was the site of important weapons factories. It was only in 1994 that the city was opened up and even now it is still very much unknown to tourists.

Kolomna makes for a great day trip, and you can explore the restored medieval walls, and the city’s very own Kremlin, a huge fortress which dates back to the 16th century.

4. Zvenigorod

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, Zvenigorod

Zvenigorod is as little as an hour’s drive away from Moscow city centre, and the small town makes for a pleasant break from the capital.

Zvenigorod is an old and historic place, with a history dating back almost a thousand years.

There are some beautiful monasteries to visit as well as the unusual Museum of Russian Desserts, where you can sample and explore this aspect of the local culinary culture.

Zvenigorod was also a town where the world-renowned Anton Checkov once lived, and you can visit a museum here that’s dedicated to his life.

5. Sergiyev Posad

Sergiyev Posad

North of the capital is the city of Sergiyev Posad, which is one of the few well-known tourist destinations in the surrounding region.

You will find this as a suggested stop on most travel itineraries to Moscow, and many tour companies include this as part of their excursions around the city because this city is home to the famous Trinity Lavra of St Sergius.

This is a huge Russian Orthodox Monastery which has been here for hundreds of years, and continues to be run by monks who look after the revered tomb of St Sergius, who was laid to rest here.

It’s an important pilgrimage place for Orthodox Christians and an important stop for tourists.

6. Kubinka Tank Museum

Kubinka Tank Museum

Outside Moscow, you can find an unusual museum which will give you a truly ‘Russian’ experience.

The Kubinka Tank Museum was once the location of a Red Army tank testing ground. Now, it’s been turned into a huge museum that showcases every conceivable type of armoured vehicle.

7. Arkhangelskoye Estate

Arkhangelskoye Estate

The Arkhangelskoye Estate was built on the outskirts of Moscow and dates back to the late 18th century when it was constructed by a Rusian aristocratic family.

For over a century, it was the domain of the nobility, until of course, the Russian Revolution and the advent of Communism swept the family that owned the estate out of the country.

The estate was opened to the public by the Communists and turned into a museum, which it remains today.

Restoration work after the fall of the Soviet Union saved the Arkhangelskoye Estate from falling into disrepair and kept the grounds and the grand palace as a lavish example of pre-Revolution Russia.

8. Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl, Russia

Yaroslavl is found a few hours to the north of Moscow and makes for a long day trip from the city. It’s worth the journey to experience one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations.

Yaroslavl is found on the banks of the River Volga and has been a historically important city throughout Russian history. The city has even been the capital of the country at various points.

You can explore the many museums and monasteries to learn more about this intriguing destination.

9. Rostov Veliky

Rostov Veliky

Just south of Yaroslavl is the small but culturally rich town of Rostov Veliky.

This is another important site in Russian history, as the town can date its origins back to early Slavic settlement around Moscow.

Lake Nero is a beautiful and expansive lake near the town, fringed on one side by an ancient fortress, giving Rostov Veliky a wonderful atmosphere to experience.

10. Vladimir

Vladimir, Russia

Two hours east of Moscow is another historic Russian city that is very much on the regional tourist trail.

It makes for a great day trip from the capital because Vladimir dates back to the 12th century and is full of Russian history and culture.

This was one of the first Russian capitals and it still contains many beautiful medieval buildings that are hundreds of years old.

Suzdal, Russia

The small town of Suzdal is just a few kilometres north of the city of Vladimir.

The town is part of a fantastic UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the historic sites from both Suzdal and Vladimir.

The town was founded in medieval times and also acted for a time as an early capital for Russian kingdoms in the region.

Klin, Russia

Klin is a fairly unassuming town to the north-west of Moscow, but it’s worth visiting to see one particular sight, the house of Tchaikovsky.

The famous 19th-century composer spent his final days here and wrote his very last piece of work in the house in Klin. It is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

It’s a grand estate and an interesting insight into pre-Soviet, Russian culture.

13. Melikova

Melikova

A short trip past the Moscow suburbs will bring you to another famous estate, the house of renowned Russian writer and playwright Anton Checkov.

By the town of Checkov, which was renamed in his honour, the museum of Melikova will take you on a journey through his life and indeed, what the lives of many of his contemporary fellow Russians would have been like too.

14. Gorki Leninskie

Gorki Leninskie

On the southern edge of Moscow is Gorki Leniniskie.

This grand estate was once the realm of Russian nobles, but after the Russian Revolution it was personally taken over by Vladimir Lenin who turned it into his own home.

He spent much of his last years here, and after his death, the estate became a shrine to his life and legacy.

Today it still remains an interesting museum, and is still in many ways a shrine to communism.

15. Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park is a huge area of protected land that is found right on the edge of Moscow and is even surrounded on several sides by suburbs of the city.

It’s unusual to find such a large national park so close to a capital and it’s easy to spend the day exploring this veritable wilderness of beautiful scenery and plentiful wildlife.
