How to Qualify for a Military Discount on a Cruise

Documentation and eligibility.

To qualify for a military discount on a cruise, you generally need to provide documentation that verifies your military service. This documentation can vary based on the cruise line but commonly includes items such as a military ID card, DD214 form, or veterans designation on your driver’s license.

Ensure you review the specific eligibility requirements for the cruise line you’re interested in, as policies may differ slightly between companies. Military discounts are typically available to active duty service members, veterans, retirees, and sometimes even to spouses and dependents.

Timing and Availability

Military discounts on cruises are often subject to availability and may have specific booking windows. It’s recommended to book your cruise as early as possible to secure the best rates and availability for military discounts. Keep an eye out for special promotions around military holidays or designated appreciation months, as cruise lines may offer additional discounts during these times.

Remember, popular travel seasons and destinations can impact the availability of military discounts, so planning ahead and staying flexible with your travel dates can increase your chances of accessing these exclusive savings.

Maximizing Your Military Discount

Booking Tips and Strategies

When booking a cruise with a military discount, consider these tips to make the most of your savings:

  • Early Reservations : Secure the best rates by booking your cruise early. Cruise lines often offer discounts for booking in advance, so keep an eye out for early booking promotions.
  • Flexible Travel Dates : Stay flexible with your travel dates to increase your chances of accessing exclusive military discounts. Avoid peak travel seasons if possible to find more cost-effective options.
  • Review Eligibility : Before booking, carefully review the eligibility requirements for the military discount. Ensure you have the necessary documentation, such as a military ID card or DD214 form, to qualify for the savings.
  • Special Booking Windows : Take advantage of specific booking windows and promotions around military holidays. Some cruise lines may offer additional discounts or perks during these periods.
  • Stay Informed : Keep yourself updated on the latest discounts and offers available to military personnel. Sign up for cruise line newsletters or follow them on social media to receive notifications about exclusive deals.

Combining Discounts and Offers

To maximize your savings further, consider combining your military discount with other available offers:

  • Promotional Deals : Look out for promotional offers from cruise lines that can be stacked with your military discount. These can include onboard credits, free upgrades, or discounted excursions.
  • Membership Discounts : If you belong to any travel or loyalty programs, check if they offer additional discounts on cruises. Some memberships may provide extra savings when combined with your military discount.
  • Group Bookings : If traveling with a group, inquire about group discounts that can be applied alongside your military savings. Group rates often come with additional perks or savings for all travelers.

By implementing these booking tips, staying informed about available promotions, and exploring opportunities to combine discounts, you can ensure you’re maximizing your military discount and enjoying a fantastic cruise vacation at a more affordable price.

Common Limitations and Restrictions

When it comes to military discounts offered by cruise lines, there are some common limitations and restrictions you should be aware of to make the most of these special offers.

Blackout Dates and Itinerary Restrictions

Cruise lines often have blackout dates where military discounts may not apply. These blackout dates are typically during peak travel seasons, holidays, or on specific itineraries. It’s essential to check with the cruise line for blackout dates before finalizing your travel plans to avoid any surprises. While blackout dates can limit your options, planning ahead and staying flexible with your travel dates can help you navigate around these restrictions.

Discount Variability by Cruise Line

It’s important to note that the availability and extent of military discounts can vary by cruise line. While major cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian offer military discounts, the percentages and terms of these discounts may differ. Some cruise lines may offer fixed percentage discounts across all their cruises, while others may have fluctuating discounts based on factors like demand, cabin availability, or the specific itinerary. Researching the military discount policies of different cruise lines can help you find the best deal that suits your preferences and budget.

Understanding these common limitations and restrictions can help you navigate the process of booking a cruise with military discounts more effectively. By being informed about blackout dates, itinerary restrictions, and the variability of discounts among different cruise lines, you can make strategic decisions to maximize your savings and enjoy a memorable cruise vacation with your loved ones.

Tips for Finding the Best Military Deals on Cruises

Research and Compare Options

When searching for the best military deals on cruises, your first step is to thoroughly research and compare the options available. Different cruise lines offer varying discounts, so it’s essential to explore multiple providers to find the most lucrative deals. Military Discounts for Cruises

Last updated on May 24th, 2024 at 12:49 pm

Military personnel, whether active, retired, or veteran, make many sacrifices to serve their country. As an acknowledgment of these sacrifices, most cruise lines offer some form of discount to members of the military.

The perks from a cruise line for being a member of the military can come in the form of discounts, special rates, or onboard credits, depending on the line.

From knowing the different types of discounts available to understanding the best way to book a cruise, this guide will help you find a cruise that offers military discounts.

Table of Contents

Qualifications For Military Discounts

Military discounts are given to those who qualify, so you must meet certain requirements. While the types of requirements might vary between cruise lines, generally the standards you will need to meet are listed below.

An individual must be classified as one of the following:

1. Active personnel currently serving in the Canadian National Defense, United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, or Reserves.

2. Retired from any of the divisions listed above. The definition of “retired” is a person with a minimum of 20 years of service, medically retired or 100% disabled .

3. Veterans with an Honorable Discharge that served a minimum of 2 years, or served 6 months in an active war zone, in any of the United States services listed above.

4. Spouses of actively deployed or deceased military personnel are eligible to book one stateroom as long as the eligible spouse is occupying the stateroom.

To be able to receive a military discount, you must present proper identification. That identification is usually in the form of a United States Uniformed Service white identification card for US military personnel.

For Canadian personnel, it is a white N.D.21 identification card with a red Canadian flag displayed for Canadian National Defense.  You will be asked to present your card at the time of check-in and again at embarkation.

For specific requirements, check the cruise line website that you are interested in sailing with for more details.

How to Find Military Discounts

Finding military discounts for cruises is as simple as logging on to the cruise line’s website or calling the cruise line directly.

The best place for accurate and up-to-date information on military discounts is with the individual cruise line. It may take a bit of your time to research a particular line, but would be worth it to save some money.

Here are some of the cruise lines that offer military discounts:

Norwegian Cruise Line

In November of 2022, NCL launched their first-ever Military Appreciation Program . Designed to benefit active and retired U.S. military members and their spouses, the program has discounts across the company’s 18-ship fleet.

NCL’s program will give eligible military personnel a 10% discount on their cruise fare. This program can be combined with their Free At Sea offer.

Carnival Cruise Military Cruise Deals

Carnival offers reduced rates to military personnel. In addition to that there are deals that are offered in May and November for Memorial and Veteran’s Day.

Some of the offers are for discounted fates, complimentary cabin upgrades and/or onboard credit. Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-800-764-7419.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

Royal will occasionally offer military rates (not a discount) on select bookings throughout the year. The rate might only apply to specific cabins on select sailings.

There are times when the rate can be a very decent 40%, but you will need to do some research for times and ships. For the specifics, it would be best to call the cruise line at 1-866-562-7625 as the website does not offer the information.

MSC Cruises

MSC has offers for active and retired military personnel that are up to 10% off almost all sailings. A 5% discount is offered on interior and ocean-view cabins, while 10% is offered on balcony, suite and MSC Yacht Club staterooms.

On MSC, parents, parents-in-law and dependent children of active and retired military personnel also qualify for the discount. MSC’s Civil Service discount program offers police and firefighters discounts, too.

Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-833-241-5905.

Princess Cruises

While Princess does not offer a discount, they do offer up to $250 on board credit to active and veteran members of the U.S. and Canadian militaries. The credit can be used on any cruise at any time of the year, so that does make it convenient.

Princess gives out the credit in this manner: $50 for sailings of six days or less, $100 for siblings of 7 to 13 days and $250 for sailings two weeks in length or longer.

Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-800-774-6237.

Disney Cruise Line

Paperwork Needed For Military Discounts

Whatever cruise line you decide to sail with, in order to receive your military discount or credit, you will need to provide the line with proper paperwork.

You will be asked to provide relevant documents that may include:

  • Military or dependent ID
  • Current LES (leave and earnings statement)
  • Copy of retirement papers (Form DD214 or DD256)
  • Proof of Honorable Discharge (Form DD214)

Depending on the cruise line, you may need to provide proof of military service at the time you book your cruise and again at check-in. Plan on carrying those relevant documents with you on embarkation day .

Going Above The Norm

Carnival has always shown appreciation for members of our military. In 2023, Carnival Cruise Lines hosted over 1,500 military appreciation gatherings.

Carnival recently honored military women in special ceremonies during Fleet Week. They have also initiated a Military Appreciation Day across the fleet during North American sailings that take place the week of July 24th.

Several ships in the fleet, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Glory, Carnival Panorama , Carnival Pride, Carnival Radiance, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Vista, Mardi Gras, and the new Carnival Jubilee and Carnival Firenze, feature the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge. The bar will soon be added to Carnival Legend .

Recently, Carnival celebrated more than 150 military women aboard the Carnival Conquest during Miami’s first-ever Fleet Week. The ceremony included servicewomen from the United States Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

As a cruise line, Carnival carries more active military members and veterans than any other cruise line.

Final Thoughts

Cruising can be a relaxing vacation option for military members and their families, as it is a way to spend quality time together and a wonderful way to make memories that will last a lifetime.

A cruise takes care of all those everyday chores for you. You have your own lodgings, food is plentiful , varied and cooked for you. No dishes, no housekeeping, no outside distractions.

There is a variety of activities and entertainment onboard to keep you busy, or you can sit and soak up the sun on the deck. A cruise allows you to concentrate on yourself and your family and re-energize.

Just make sure you don’t lose track of time and miss the boat!

Visiting the Islands

Both islands offer picturesque beaches and charming towns full of shops, restaurants and points of interest. Each island has its own lively night life too. If you’re only there for the day, but want to see it all, then a bus tour is the best way. We have information about each island available on our web site. Click here for Nantucket and here for Martha’s Vineyard . For more information on the islands check out each island’s chamber of commerce web site: Nantucket Island Chamber and Martha’s Vineyard Chamber .

There are bus tours available on both islands. On Nantucket, we recommend and sell tickets for Nantucket Island Tours . You can book a ticket via their website or call (800) 492-8082 to book your bus tour with your ferry trip. There are multiple bus tour companies to choose from on Martha’s Vineyard ; however we are not affiliated with any.

If you’re having a hard time choosing which island to see, then why not see them both? Hy-Line is the only provider of an “ Around the Sound ” excursion which departs from Hyannis and allows you to visit both islands in the same day.

Ferry Terminal Information

Our Hyannis terminal has a ticket office complete with an indoor waiting area as well as a dockside restaurant, The Landing Cafe . The Nantucket ticket office has limited space with a waiting area and the Martha’s Vineyard ticket office has adjacent shops you can browse in while you stay out of the weather.
