History of Krishna Balaram Mandir / ISKCON Vrindavan

The International society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was founded in New York City in 1966 by Shri A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada with an aim to spread the divine message of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

The principles and practices followed by ISKCON are based on the percepts laid down by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1532) along with His brother Nityananada Prabhu and six of His principal associates, the Goswamis of Vrindavan namely Santana, Rupa, Jiva, Gopal Bhatta, Raghunatha Dasa and Raghunatha Bhatta.

Architecture of Krishna Balaram Mandir / ISKCON Vrindavan

This magnificent temple was inaugurated by Srila Prabhupada in the year 1975 and was the first temple built by ISKCON in India. It is a Gaudiya Vaishnavism Temple inspired by Sri Chaitnaya Mahaprabhu in the 15th century.

Constructed with white marble, the temple is one of the impressive structures in Vrindavan. It is an example of exclusive workmanship with intricately carved walls and domes, winding staircase and archways.

The temple complex has three shrines ; one dedicated to Lord Krishna and His brother Lord Balarama, second dedicated to Sri Gaura - Nitai (Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananada) and the third to Sri ShyamaSundar (Lord Krishna and Radha Rani).

As you enter the temple doors, the checkered black and white marble courtyard catches your eye. The temple complex is huge with corridors displaying pictures depicting various Krishna leelas.

The vast ISKCON temple complex also houses a guest house, residential brahmachari ashram, a deity department, restaurant, bakery, souvenir shop and Srila Prabhupada ji’s samadhi.

Founder of Iskcon Temple

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement, was founded by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Born as Abhay Charan De on September 1, 1896, in Kolkata, India, he later became a prominent spiritual leader and scholar.

In 1965, at the age of 69, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada traveled to the United States with the aim of spreading the teachings of Lord Krishna and the practice of bhakti yoga. With little support but immense determination, he established ISKCON in 1966 in New York City. The organization rapidly grew and expanded worldwide, attracting followers from various backgrounds.

ISKCON Temple Vrindavan

ISKCON Temple, also referred to as Sri Sri Krishna Balram Mandir, is one of the famous religious places to visit in Vrindavan . Devoted to Lord Krishna, ISKCON Temple is located near Raman Reti area of Vrindavan. The temple, which comes under the administration of the ISKCON Trust, was built in the year 1975. It holds a special significance amongst the followers of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). At present, this popular temple in Vrindavan serves as one of the major spiritual centres in the city. Besides its spiritual significance, it’s the architecture of the temple which endears it to a lot of tourists. On entering the shrine, tourists first pass through the magnificent white marble archway of the samadhi of Prabhupada. Thereafter, the imposing wooden temple doors transport tourists directly to a spiritual ambiance. The soothing music of mrdanga, kartals and harmonium of the 24/7 kirtaniyas, all come together to create an experience which is exclusive to the ISKCON Temple. The main attraction of the temple is the altar which is devoted to the brothers - Balaram and Krishna, after whom the temple is named. Throughout the day, various aartis are performed, including, Samadhi Aarti, Tulasi Aarti, Mangala Aarti, Dhoop Aarti, Ra Bhog Aarti, Sandhya Aarti Pushpa Aarti and Shayana Aarti. Being part of these aartis is also a delightful experience while visiting ISKCON. As a holy offering, Khichdi is served to the devotees at this temple.

Opening & Closing Timings

ISKCON Temple can be visited all days a week. However, the timing of the temple differs for both summer and winter seasons. In summers, the temple opens at 4:10 AM and closes at 8:45 PM. Whereas, in winters, ISKCON temple opens at 4:10 in the morning and closes at 8:15 in the evening.

How to reach.

From Delhi Airport you can get a taxi directly to Vrindavan. Taxis are available at the airport or you can arrange for a taxi from Vrindavan to collect you, this is a better option as you are less likely to be cheated. If you know someone in Vrindavan they can also arrange it for you. You should expect to pay about Rs.4500 for a AC taxi to Vrindavan.

There is a daily bus service to Delhi from the bus stop outside the Ashram. Fare: Rs.185/- per person

1. Prem Mandir

Constructed in the year 2001, Prem Mandir draws in hundreds of tourists every year to witness the magnificence of its structure. This beautiful temple is a shrine dedicated to Radha and Krishna along with Sita and Ram. The first place to visit in the day trip, this great temple has been constructed entirely out of white marble and adorned with intricate carvings.

The statues found all around the temple are that of Shri Krishna and his admirers and portrayals of important events from the Lord’s life. The pillars of this temple are intricately engraved with beautiful carvings that depict the Kinkari Sakhis and Manjari Sakhis serving Shri Radha Krishna in various ways.

Prem mandir looks even more splendid in the evening when it is lit up with lamps and diyas. A grand pillar-less complex is being built next to Prem Mandir, which is expected to house almost 25,000 people at once. This temple holds a great significance to devout Krishna bhakts and architecture enthusiasts alike.

Must see : The Prem Mandir musical fountain. The musical fountain, where the colored water dances to the beats of Radha Krishna kirtans. Paired with awesome lighting displays, this event is a hit among children.

2. Shri Banke Bihari Mandir

Shri Banke Bihari Mandir is a major attraction in the holy city of Vrindavan and the one of the most popular places to visit in our one day Mathura & Vrindavan tour from Delhi. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. This beautiful temple has been done in the stunning Rajasthani style and adorned with arched windows and meticulous stonework.

The idol of Lord Krishna in this temple is that of Gopal, standing in the Tribhanga position. The temple complex is free of sounds of bells and other musical instruments as it is believed that Gopal does not like the noise. Prayers are offered through the divine chants of ‘Radha Naam’.

Special events from the life of Lord Krishna are celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy at the Banke Bihari Temple. Mangala Aarti is performed at the temple during Janmashtami, while Akshaya Tritiya is the only day when you can see the deity’s pious feet.

The deity is dressed up in a special crown and made to carry a flute. In the last five days of the Hindu month of Phalguna, the deity comes off his altar and can be seen fully. It is also around this time that he can be seen with four ‘gopis’.

Jhulan Yatra, the swing festival of Lord Krishna, is celebrated on the third day of the waxing moon, where Lord Banke Bihari is seated on a golden swing known as ‘hindola’. You may also visit this temple during Holi to celebrate this festival and play with colors.

3. Shri Krishna – Balaram Temple (ISKCON Temple)

ISKCON temple, also known as Sri Krishna-Balaram Mandir was built in 1975. The main reason behind the construction of the temple was to increase awareness of the Vedic scriptures and the Bhagavad Gita.

The temple is a seat to Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, Shri Krishna and Balaram and Sri Sri Radha Shyamasundara along with Lalita and Vishakha. The two idols on the central slab of the temple are that of Krishna and Balarama, who were brothers and on the right are the idols of their friends.

Their left side is flanked with a statue of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with Nityananda, and of Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and his spiritual coach Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.

Dwarkadheesh Temple was constructed in the year 1814 under the instructions of the treasurer of the Estate of Gwalior, Seth Gokul Das Parikh. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna.

The temple is a testament to the locals who address their beloved Krishna as ‘King of Dwarka’. Lord Krishna and Radha are the main deities inside the complex of the temple. The temple has beautiful paintings and carvings inside which also makes it a monument specializing in art and architecture.

In Dwarkadheesh Temple , the deity of Lord Krishna has been built out of black marble and the idol of Radha is out of white marble. The temple is gigantic in its structure and has a main building which is large and garlanded by an entrance that has been constructed in Rajasthani architectural prototype. Idols of several god and goddesses also grace the temple complex along with those of Radha and Krishna.

Must see : Hindola festival is celebrated with a great gusto at the temple during monsoons. The festival is celebrated by decorating the entire temple with flowers and lights.

6. Vishram Ghat
