Magic Tour 1986: Queen’s Last Grand Concert Series – Capturing Unforgettable Moments Through Photos

by William Todd 212 Views

In the annals of rock history, the Magic Tour of 1986 holds a special place. This was the last-ever tour by Queen with its charismatic and beloved frontman, Freddie Mercury. A grand spectacle filled with music, energy, and emotion, the Magic Tour is remembered as much for its triumphant performances as for its poignant significance. Let’s delve into the vibrant memories of that unforgettable summer.

A Tour of Firsts and Lasts

Launched in June 1986, the Magic Tour was a momentous series of concerts that swept across Europe. The tour was undertaken in support of their album ‘A Kind of Magic’, and it represented many ‘firsts’ for the band. It was Queen’s first stadium tour, and it also marked their first performances in countries such as Hungary and Austria.

Yet, the Magic Tour was also a series of ‘lasts’. Unbeknownst to fans, this would be the last time they would see Freddie Mercury perform live with Queen. Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS the following year, and his health would subsequently deteriorate, eventually leading to his untimely death in 1991.

Unforgettable Performances

Despite the tragic undertones, the Magic Tour was a triumph of music, showmanship, and spirit. Each concert was an electrifying event filled with Queen’s greatest hits, including ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Radio Ga Ga’, ‘We Are The Champions’, and ‘A Kind of Magic’.

One of the most memorable performances took place at Wembley Stadium in London, where Queen played to a packed crowd of 72,000 fans. The energy of that night was captured in the live album ‘Live at Wembley ’86’, which offers a taste of what it was like to witness Queen in their prime.

The Legacy of the Magic Tour

Despite being Queen’s last tour with Freddie Mercury, the Magic Tour was not an end, but a celebration of the band’s journey and a testament to their enduring impact.

It was during this tour that Freddie Mercury famously said

We’re gonna stay together until we fucking well die, I’m sure.

The legacy of the Magic Tour continues to live on, influencing generations of musicians and reminding us all of the magic that happens when art, emotion, and energy collide. As Queen’s music continues to be loved and celebrated, the memories of the Magic Tour serve as a vibrant echo of a time when a band and its frontman captured the hearts of millions.

In many ways, the Magic Tour was a fitting farewell for Freddie Mercury, showcasing his incredible talent, charisma, and spirit. It was the final act of a band that had transformed rock music, and it remains etched in the hearts of fans as a potent reminder of Queen’s indomitable spirit and the magic of Freddie Mercury.

Watch: Queen The Greatest - The Magic Tour, Part 2 (Episode 34)

“Queen The Greatest”: a celebration of 50 of the greatest moments from the Queen story so far. A 50-week YouTube series celebrating key moments in Queen’s history reminding us why Queen and their music continue to be loved across the world.

Queen arrive for their final 1986 concert at Knebworth Park, U.K., in the ‘Magic Helicopter’ customised with the art from the band’s A Kind of Magic album.

Queen The Greatest Episode 34: Queen 1986: The Magic Tour – Part 2

Continuing our look at Queen's record-breaking Magic Tour. As the tour reaches its climax, and within just a few short weeks of each other, Queen play three of their most memorable and iconic gigs.

“We always believed that we had something special and that we could do anything that anyone else did. That’s the kind of belief that kept us going in the early days. But I don’t think we quite believed what would happen. I don’t think we even knew what was possible.” Brian May.

“I think that in some form or another the music will always continue now, I think they’ve reached that status. Nobody knows whether Mick Jagger will be singing when he’s 65, or Queen will be performing as Queen. I think that the Queen structure will continue on, and they will continue to make music.”  Jim Beach, Manager.

Queen The Greatest returns this week with a second installment revisiting the band’s sensational and record-breaking 1986 Magic Tour.

Having already blazed a trail with 14 sold-out shows around the UK and Europe setting milestones along the way, Queen returned to London in July 1986 to play two nights at London’s 72,000 capacity Wembley Stadium – the site of their extraordinary and historic performance at Live Aid the previous year.

Yet despite the band having reached an all-time high popularity, they weren’t taking it for granted that their first home ground shows since Live Aid would sell out…

Brian May: “We’ve been away a long time and tickets will go on sale for Wembley on Friday. And it’s always a time when you sort of go ‘I wonder what is out there? I wonder if they still do want to see us?’ You never know. We’ll only know once the applications start coming in.”

The close on 150,000 tickets on sale sold out in a matter of hours, and these memorable nights were captured on camera and remain one of Queen’s best-loved live shows to this very day.

Roger Taylor: “I think Wembley was a tough gig, because of the actual physical size of it. You’d better go down well there, you don’t want a quiet audience. I’ve seen people die there, because you won’t hear them. If it’s a ripple, a ripple really won’t register. So you need a roar. They call it the Wembley Roar. And it was OK for us. You knew you were going to have to work quite hard at Wembley.”

Then as Queen hit the road once again, a new adventure awaited them…

[Interviewer]: “I think there’s only one country you’ve never been to before?”

Roger Taylor: “That’d be Hungary. Yeah. Budapest.”

[Interviewer] “So that is new ground?”

Roger Taylor: “ It’s great, yeah. We’re very excited about that. There are people from all over the Iron Curtain bloc coming. They’re selling tickets in…or whatever they do over there. Do they sell tickets?”

[Interviewer] “I presume so?”

Roger Taylor: “Or give them away? I don’t know, I don’t know. Whatever they do, people are coming from Poland and Czechoslovakia, and a lot of the Eastern Bloc, which is very exciting. ‘Cos the Russians would never let us in.”

Freddie Mercury: “I like doing places that we’ve never done before, to see how they’re going to react. Some places that we’ve already been before, we have a certain idea of how, what they’re going to do. But this is going to be great. It’s going to be great to see if they do the same things, if they have seen the films and whether they’re going to do the same things for Radio Ga Ga and things like that. That should be very interesting, a good challenge.”

Making history as the first artists to ever perform anywhere behind the Iron Curtain, the band’s July 27 show would be played to an audience of over 80,000. Filmed using nearly every available 35m television camera available in the country the concert would go on to further make history by being broadcast at the end of the year across the Communist Bloc including Czechoslovakia, East Germany, and Yugoslavia as well as being shown in 59 Hungarian cinemas on New Year’s Day 1987.

Drawing to a close with only dates still to be played in France and Spain, the overwhelming demand back in the UK prompted promoters to hastily add one last massive show to the schedule – at the famous Knebworth Park, where the band would end their tour performing an open air show before an audience variously estimated at between 160,000 and 200,000. Since the start of the tour, June 7, Queen would end up playing to a fraction over one million people.

Brian May: “We always believed that we had something special and that we could do anything that anyone else did. That’s the kind of thing, that’s the kind of belief that kept us going in the early days. But I don’t think we quite believed what would happen. I don’t think we even knew what was possible.”

Jim Beach, Manager: “I think that in some form or another the music will always continue now, I think they’ve reached that status that their music will be remembered. How much longer they record…goodness only knows. Nobody knows whether Mick Jagger will be singing when he’s 65, or Queen will be performing as Queen. I think that the Queen structure will continue on, and they will continue to make music. How it will be…nobody ever knows that, really.”

Freddie Mercury: “We’re the only sort of, the four Grand Dames that have actually stuck it together.”

John Deacon: “Yes you do ask how long it’s going to go on really, and we’ve been doing it a long time now, and I don’t know. If I could tell the future, life would be quite boring I think.”

Signing off at the close of the band’s August 9, 1986, Knebworth concert, Freddie thanked the crowd saying: “Thank you lovely people, you’ve been a wonderful audience. God bless you. God bless you, goodnight, thank you.”

No one knew this yet, but this was to be Queen’s last-ever public performance with Freddie.

“Queen The Greatest”: a celebration of 50 of the greatest moments from the Queen story so far. A 50-week YouTube series celebrating key moments in Queen’s history reminding us why Queen and their music continue to be loved across the world

Continuing our look at Queen’s record breaking Magic Tour. As the tour reaches its climax, and within just a few short weeks of each other, Queen play three of their most memorable and iconic gigs.

“We always believed that we had something special, and that we could do anything that anyone else did.

Queen The Greatest returns this week with a second instalment revisiting the band’s sensational and record-breaking 1986 Magic Tour.

Having already blazed a trail with 14 sold out shows around the UK and Europe setting milestones along the way, Queen returned to London in July 1986 to play two nights at London’s 72,000 capacity Wembley Stadium – the site of their extraordinary and historic performance at Live Aid the previous year.

Roger Taylor: “It’s great, yeah.

Freddie Mercury: “ We’re the only sort of, the four Grand Dames that have actually stuck it together.”

She IS the moment!

Priyanka sat down with GLAAD’s Tony Morrison to talk about what it took to build and create her debut album, what she wants fans to take away from her latest work and how she is all about giving them access to drag in her upcoming national tour.

The release of the album comes with an official music video for the title track “Devastatia,” which pictures a Godzilla-sized Priyanka taking over the city. Directed by Caroline Torti with choreography by Tatiana Parker, the video is a peek into Queen Priyanka’s mind and continues to build on the cinematic universe she started with her EP “Taste Test.” Here, she’s officially broken into the music industry and the video captures what not taking no for an answer is all about.

The album opens with “ I’m a Star” , a track that takes a stand against the limitations imposed on Queen Priyanka and embodies the radical spirit of drag, backed by retro disco strings and groovy synth. And hot on its heels,  “Toss Up”  bounces with all the rambunctious, frenetic energy of late nights out, wearing glitter eye makeup and drinking espresso martinis at 8pm. A rebel without a cause, Queen Priyanka declares: “ As long as those drinks are free / me and my girls in the back seat / Might catch a vibe / Might start a fight / It’s my kind of night” .

The album’s title track, “ Devastatia,”  is a bold statement of self-empowerment and unapologetic individuality. Queen Priyanka says of the single:  “Imagine being so accidentally iconic, you offend everyone. That is DEVASTATIA. That is ME. That is probably you! We all have things about ourselves that we think are weird and dumb and make us different—Devastatia is you owning it, not giving a fuck and shaking your ass.”

“Problem Pageant”  offers a refreshing take on confidence and self-acceptance, calling for us to simultaneously be proud of our problems and struggles, while continuing to show up and show out.  “Bad Bitches Don’t Cry”  is the perfect follow up with its hip-shaking, rave-reminiscent bass line and Priyanka’s addictively catchy lyricism intertwined with Canadian pop diva RALPH’s powerhouse vocals. Uproariously fierce,  “No New Friends”  is a mantra of finding true fulfillment from within, while  “Shut It Down”  is a classic club anthem buoyed by a sense of clarity that finds Queen Priyanka rising above toxic relationships and shining brighter than a shooting star.

Finally, the album comes to a close with the heart-pumping  “GUCCIYANKA” ,   a Bollywood inspired track featuring Canadian drag superstar,  Lemon , that will unleash your inner queen and make you feel like you can take over the world with no insecurities.

Devastatia  is more than an album; it’s a celebration of self-expression, resilience, and unapologetic glamor. Queen Priyanka is magnetic, as she pulls everyone around her into her fierce world of self-actualization and inner strength. Her unique voice and empowering vision shine through every track, offering all of us, and herself, permission to walk boldly, find strength in self-discovery, and love our messy and sparkling lives.

In October, Queen Priyanka will embark on her headlining fall North American tour that will see her bringing 70 minute show inclusive of her magnetic personality and stage presence to 23 cities across North America. This is AMERIYANKA takeover:
