15 Best TOURIST SPOTS in MINDANAO 2024 (Beaches, Falls, Rivers & More)

 alt=

As we all know, Mindanao is the second largest of the three (3) major Philippine Islands. It is approximately 97,530 sq. km and is home to 25% of the entire nation’s population. Mindanao is the farthest island region from the capital Metro Manila, this is the reason why sometimes it is outshined by its siblings Luzon and Visayas in the tourism industry.

However, make no mistake! Because through the years, Mindanao is becoming more and more popular not only in the country but also in the whole world. A lot of tourists are discovering hidden gems in the entire region that are worthy of international attention. Mindanao has an enormous set of preserved natural wonders from mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and everything that you can imagine!

The proud island of Mindanao is also being recognized in the whole world! Firstly, it has long been known as the home of the Philippines’ tallest mountain, Mt. Apo. It’s also the breeding grounds of the largest eagle in the world in terms of length and wingspan! Yes, I’m talking about no other than our very own Philippine Eagle. Aside from these natural wonders, several personalities in our current society proudly represent Mindanao! First of all, the current Philippine president, Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte traces his roots from the major city of Davao itself. Also, our first Filipino Olympic Gold Medalist, Hidilyn Diaz also comes from Mindanao!

With the current rise of Mindanao to the spotlight of Philippine tourism, I won’t be surprised if it becomes the tourism capital of the country in no time! How do I prove it? Well, tune in because, in this article, we’re going to discover the fifteen top tourist destinations in Mindanao!

1. Cloud 9 in Siargao

First up! Ah, I think there’s no better way to start this phenomenal list than mentioning the surfers’ haven itself, Siargao Island. Siargao is considered to be the Surfing Capital of the Philippines.

Cloud 9 in Siargao

You don’t know how to surf yet? Well, don’t worry! There are several surfing lessons offered around the island so you’ll learn in no time. Another thing so good about Siargao is that it’s beautifully preserved. The place isn’t crowded like the other islands in the country so tourists have the perfect chance to appreciate its beauty.

Siargao Island’s Cloud 9 was among the world’s best-surfing spots according to international broadcasting giant, CNN. Be prepared to witness a tropical paradise with Cloud 9’s white-sand beaches, pristine and sky blue waters, tide pools, caves, coves, corals, and many more! CHECK THE BEST RESORTS IN SIARGAO HERE

2. Hinatuan Enchanted River

Next up is a truly magical place to be on the island of Mindanao. The Hinatuan Enchanted River or sometimes called the Hinatuan Sacred River baffles the minds of everyone who visits it and at the same time makes them all fall in love with its very own natural beauty.

Hinatuan Enchanted River

Credit: Wikimedia Commons

Hidden somewhere in the jungles of Surigao del Sur, is a deep spring river exuding a miraculous clear blue water. Technically, it can’t be considered a river because of two (2) reasons. Firstly, it is a saltwater river. It flows into the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean. And secondly, it is relatively short to be considered a river. Nevertheless, all those doubts are answered by the name of the river itself because it truly is enchanting.

The best part? The Hinatuan Enchanted River isn’t only for sightseeing. Aside from taking remarkable photos, visitors are allowed to dive and swim on the river! Of course, keep in mind that this tourist spot is a beautiful creation of nature. Let’s do our part and preserve it so future generations can still have a chance to witness it.

3. Tinuy-An Falls

This curtain-like waterfall is hailed as “The Little Niagara Falls of the Philippines”. The stream of water cascades into three (3) separate tiers so tourists have a wide area to explore! In the largest tier of the falls, they also let you ride a bamboo raft to wander nearer to the water drop itself.

Tinuy-An Falls

Aside from fun activities like swimming, diving, and hiking, the Tinuy-An Falls is also home to an abundant ecosystem consisting of hundreds of different animal and plant species. What a beautiful way to bring us closer to nature, right? BEST HOTELS IN BISLIG, SURIGAO

4. Malamawi Island

Malamawi Island is also known as the Hidden Paradise of Basilan for a reason. It is a tropical paradise with a long stretch of white sand beaches filled with turquoise waters and plenty of marine life! It is indeed one of the most beautiful beaches ever in the Philippines.

Malamawi Island

Credit: Reddit

Unlike other established beaches and islands in the country, Malamawi Island is not that crowded yet. However, several resorts are already starting to develop the island for many years now so you can expect that lots of rooms and cottages are already available by the time of your visit!

The best part about visiting Malamawi Island is that you seemingly have the entire island just for yourself. You can hear the waves crashing, the leaves rustling, and the birds chirping loudly and clearly. Nothing beats a day or two of peace and serenity before you go back to the hustle and bustle of the city, right?

5. Panampangan Island

Who would’ve imagined that the Philippines’ longest sandbar is located at the farthest islands of the country? That’s right, Panampangan Island is a 3,128-kilometer sandbar situated in the province of Tawi-Tawi.

Credit: Rising Philippines FB Page

From here, you can clearly see the white sands with the pristine waters of the island. Sometimes during the low tide, the sandbar even connects Panampangan and Basibuli! How beautiful is that?

Tourists love Panampangan Island because of the exclusive ambiance it provides. Yes! It would seem like you’re the only ones on the island, so go ahead and flaunt that sexy body of yours with extreme confidence! The locals there are also some of the most friendly ever, so you’re perfectly safe and secured.

6. Asik-Asik Falls

Nestled in the jungles of Cotabato is one of the natural wonders of nature. The Asik-Asik Falls are found in the mountains of Mount Ragang. What the tourists love about this majestic waterfall is its unique appearance. Instead of having the system of a regular waterfall where the stream of water stems from a river, the water comes from a wall of solid rock filled with lush greeneries and moss!

Asik-Asik Falls

Credit: Atlasobscura.com

That’s right. The wall is approximately 140 meters wide and about 60 meters tall. At a sight, the Asik-Asik Falls looks like a green curtain with water flowing from the spots of rocks. That view itself earns the respect of many photographers all over the country, so be sure to try it!

7. Cape of San Agustin

El Don Resort Davao Oriental

If you’re not up to climbing the lighthouse, you can still enjoy the raw beauty of the Cape of San Agustin. Take your time and breathe in the freshest air of Mindanao before you get back to the hustle and bustle of the city.

8. The Sunken Cemetery

The Sunken Cemetery is one of the most prominent tourist attractions in Mindanao. This magnificent yet intriguing destination is located just off the coast of Cagayan de Oro. The reason? It’s a cemetery. The story of the place and picturesque view of the Sunken Cemetery itself deserves all the attention it gets.

The Sunken Cemetery

It is said that the place was formed as a resting place for the first settlers of Camiguin who were buried alive during the eruption of Mt. Vulcan. The place is so popular that more tourists are said to be visiting the graves than the relatives of the dead themselves. It is also mentioned that upon entering the area, some people experience a sudden feeling of emptiness and loneliness. So, aside from taking pictures and admiring the view, please offer a prayer to all the lost souls of Camiguin.

9. Lake Sebu

  • Expert Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid the crowd and have the pools to yourself.

List of The Best Beaches in Mindanao, Philippines

Mindanao is the least traveled part of the Philippines; this is due to news on terrorist attacks, possible combats, and kidnaps for ransom where tourists and missionaries are usually involved. Even Filipinos like me are a bit wary of this part of the country. However, we are mostly wrong. With much military presence in Mindanao, it has been safer than Luzon or Visayas.

Best Beaches in Mindanao

Mindanao is indeed a treasure of the Philippines , but not only is it famous because of the Philippine Eagle, the luscious forests and mountains but also we are proud of their beautiful beaches. With over 7,000 islands in the Philippines, Mindanao is the biggest and also has tiny islands nearby, and with islands comes breathtaking beautiful beaches .

Best Beaches in Davao, Philippines

We have summarized the best beaches in Mindanao for you. There are countless resorts as well as beaches offering you salty clear waters, the sun, and the shade, but we have listed the top 10. When you are on vacation in the Philippines, make sure to come at least one of these beaches.

1. White Island, Camiguin

Best Beaches in Mindanao

On the island that is called “Island born of fire,” is an uninhabited beach of the White Island. Its fine, white sand and crystal-clear seawater canopied by the blue sky makes it one of the best beaches in Mindanao. The ambiance will hypnotize you to enjoy every striking wave to the seashore. The last trip to the island is at 4:30 pm as the tides changed, but the best time to go there is during sunset because it’s undeniably breathtaking.

Suggested Hotel: Guerrera Rice Paddy Villas

2. Magpupungko Beach, Siargao

Best Beaches in Mindanao

Unlike most beaches in this list, the scenic rocks at Magpupungko Beach make the place look cooler. There are many fees you need to pay when going there, but it’s worth it. Cliff dive on pools filled with luminous, cold water. You can also swim all you can as you explore several little coves above and under the surface. Good timing applies here as it is best to visit the place during low tide. This is undeniably one of the best beaches in Mindanao.

3. Great Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga

Best Beaches in Mindanao

Are you tired of white beaches? Well, Zamboanga, particularly Great Santa Cruz Island has a pink one. Its unique color makes it one of the best beaches in Mindanao. The pink is because of the red organ pipe corals that were pulverized and mixed with the white sand. It’s quite popular, so you better book a slot; however, the place is stunning, and you can see corals onshore or snorkel to see them too and maybe some stingless jellyfish.

Suggested Hotel: Hotel Primera

4. Malamawi Beach, Isabela City, Basilan

A lot may fear this place, but when you brave this adventure, you will find a hidden treasure. Malamawi Beach is a hidden sanctuary and one of the best beaches in Mindanao. Gumasa Beach is the Boracay of Mindanao. It’s powdery, talc-like white sand is comparable with what’s in Boracay. It’s a tranquil beach and one of the best beaches in Mindanao. Aside from the fascinating view, you get to savor the bragged, fresh tuna of the locals as they are known as the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines”. It’s paradise on earth.

Suggested Hotel: Shangri-La Restobar

7. Canibad Beach, Samal Island

Best Beaches in Davao, Philippines

An escape from the crowded cities is in Canibad Beach in Samal Island. It’s pretty far from the city center and not advisable to elders as the way down is steep. You could try cliff jumping or enjoy a walk on the talc-like sand while hearing the calming waves of the ocean. Bring money as there are an entrance fee and food as well as no restaurant is by the beach. However, this is one of the best beaches in Mindanao, offering you a serene place. 8. San Victor Island, Baganga, Davao Oriental

Best Beaches in Davao, Philippines

Right in front of the Pacific Ocean is a scenic Island, San Victor Island, one of the best beaches in Davao. Not does it only have white sand and pristine waters, but a rich marine life. The Diocese of Mati maintains it as it also has a Catholic Chapel on the beach. Come here and enjoy swimming and seafood with your friends and family. It will be a fantastic vacation.

Suggested Hotel: Slapen Chillen

9. Mabua Pebble Beach, Surigao City

Best Beaches in Mindanao

Another beach, unlike any other; not the usual white sand, but there are amazing rocks or pebbles on the beach. With smooth stones and a great view of the sunset, this is what you call one of the best beaches in the Philippines. It’s very accessible so that you can come easily with family and friends. There are also restaurants nearby so you can have a great experience.

Suggested Hotel: Native Garden Apartelle

10. Banana Beach, Tagum City

Best Beaches in Davao, Philippines

The water is not that blue, and the sand isn’t as white as the other beaches, but still, Banana Beach is one of the best beaches in Mindanao. With luscious trees and a plantation nearby, you’ll get more than a dip in the sea. There’s a jungle path when you can see monkeys and lizards as well as hanging bridges. This is undoubtedly a different adventure from a typical beach outing that you wouldn’t want to miss.

Suggested Hotel: Hijo Resorts

The best time to come to Mindanao, or the Philippines, is during dry or summer season; December to May. So book your trips and pack your bags, especially your swimwear, and go have fun under the sun on the best beaches in Mindanao . You will honestly say that these places are heaven on earth.

There is a newly opened beach resort in Governor Generoso too. It is called Camp Bernardino de Lavigan and it is a very beautiful place with a really calm beach. The kids loved it there and I hope it gets featured to articles like this because it is very worth it.

9. Aliwagwag Falls Ecopark

Aliwagwag Falls is another waterfall spectacle in Mindanao. It is famous for its picturesque 84-tiered falls with more than 130 cascades and staircase-like rock formations. Due to the massive size of this spectacular waterfall, the entire length of cascading waters has been transformed and turned into an ecopark to allow visitors to explore and appreciate the beauty of the waterfalls safely.

The Aliwagwag Falls Ecopark offers a trail for trekking going up and to the left side of the waterfalls. Aside from trekking, a couple of activities are also available for visitors to enjoy and will surely provide both fun and a little bit of adrenaline. The ecopark offers Zipline and a 45-meter long Monkey bridge for the thrill-seekers. Of course, a waterfall is nothing if you don’t experience cool and refreshing waters. The best views of Aliwagwag Falls are best seen while enjoying a leisurely dip in the pristine waters.

10. Asik-asik Falls

Asik-asik Falls is a majestic sight with streams of water gliding down 60 meters off a high rock wall. The waterfall creates a curtain of water and flora that spans up to 140 meters wide. The name “asik-asik” is translated to English as “sprinkle-sprinkle”, which refers to the sprinkling of water onto the rocks below and flowing into the tribulatory stream of the Alamada River.

Due to the entire raving being covered by lush vegetation – mostly of moss and fern – the source of the waterfall stays as a mystery. There are theories that the water comes from hidden springs hidden deep within the mountain or from an underground river which seeped through the cracks, creating the sprinkles of water.

Durian - one of the must-try Mindanao food

15 MUST-TRY Mindanao Food: A Foodie Lover’s Guide

Mindanao is the second largest island group in the Philippines. It’s home to some of the most beautiful tourist attractions in the country — including mountains, beaches , waterfalls, and colorful towns and cities. But aside from these, another thing that makes Mindanao stand out is its food.

You see, this island group is home to various indigenous groups who have unique culinary dishes. Moreover, a lot of the foods in Mindanao is influenced by its neighboring countries, such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Instead of the usual sweet or sour flavors in Filipino food , Mindanao cuisine incorporates more spices and ingredients, resulting in complex flavors.

Mindanao cuisine is also influenced by other factors. A lot of residents in Mindanao area are Muslims, hence the lack of pork in many dishes. A lot of cities — especially Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga City — are situated along the coast and have an abundance of fresh seafood, making various types of fishes, crabs, and shrimps available.

The food in Mindanao is highly varied that in Zamboanga City alone, you’ll find numerous restaurants to try for a foodie adventure!

If you’re a certified foodie or someone who simply loves to eat, then Mindanao should be on your bucket list. Here we’ve compiled the best Mindanao food that you should try on your next visit.

2. Curacha with alavar sauce

3. sinuglaw, 4. piaparan, 6. tiyula itum, 8. bangbang, 10. beef kulma, 11. knickerbocker, 12. lokot-lokot, 13. sayongsong, 15. fresh seafood, what to read next:.

Andy's Satti - satti

Satti is a breakfast staple predominantly found in Zamboanga, but it also served in other provinces such as Sulu , Basilan , and Tawi-Tawi .

This flavorful dish is made of marinated skewered meat (usually beef, chicken, or seafood) grilled to perfection and then served with a bowl of hot, spicy sauce that’s rich with flavors of cumin, turmeric, and a variety of local spices. It’s served with an accompanying bowl of rice soaked in the same spicy sauce.

Aside from its taste, another great thing about satti is that it is cheap and can be found in many eateries.

Satti is often likened to satay in Malaysia and Indonesia. Personally — having lived in Malaysia for a while and visited Indonesia once or twice, I think it is somewhat different (with less flavors) than the latter, although it is still a delicious dish to try.

Vista del Mar Restaurant - curacha with special sauce

A trip to Mindanao wouldn’t be complete without sampling the famed curacha in Zamboanga. Curacha, also known as the “spanner crab” or “red frog crab”, is a local delicacy that is often served with alavar sauce, which is made from coconut milk and various spices.

You can eat curacha as is or, as we Filipinos often do, enjoy it with rice.

The best place to try curacha is Alavar Seafood Restaurant in Zamboanga City. Vista del Mar Restaurant also serves delicious curacha, with mango and bagoong as side dish.

Pro Tip : If you love the sauce, you’ll be glad to know that you can now buy it in selected stores!

Another must-try when exploring the food in Mindanao is sinuglaw. Sinuglaw is a popular delicacy found in places such as Cagayan de Oro and Davao City. It’s a fusion of “sinugba” (grilled), which refers to grilled pork belly, and “kinilaw” (raw), referring to fresh fish cooked in vinegar, citrus, and local spices.

The succulent smoky pork contrasts perfectly with the freshness of the seafood, making it a beloved dish by many.

Next up on our Mindanao food journey is piaparan. Also known as “piaparan na manok,” this traditional dish comes from the Maranao people, one of Mindanao’s major Muslim groups.

Piaparan is a rich and creamy chicken stew made with coconut milk, shredded coconut, vegetables, and various spices. It is topped with “ palapal ,” a condiment made of toasted coconut, ginger, garlic, and chili. What makes it unique from similar dishes in the country is that coconut meat is included, whereas in other dishes it is often discarded after the coconut milk has been extracted.

This Mindanao dish is often served with soup, similar to beef pares.

Pastil is a common rice meal enjoyed by the Maguindanaoan people. It is often eaten as a meal on-the-go by farmers and fishermen, which makes it a part of the living tradition of the hardworking people of Mindanao.

The concept of pastil is straightforward. A scoop of “ kagikit ” (sautĂ©ed shredded chicken, beef, or fish) is neatly wrapped in a portion of freshly cooked rice, all of which is encased in a banana leaf. It’s cheap, filling, and delicious and certainly one of the Mindanao dishes that you should try in your visit.

One of the most intriguing Mindanao food is tiyula itum. This traditional Tausug dish from the Sulu archipelago is often referred to as “black soup.” Its unique, dark color is courtesy of a key ingredient – burnt coconut paste, which not only grants tiyula itum its distinctive hue but also imparts and intense smoky flavor that sets it apart.

This soup is fragrant concoction of beef or goat, simmered with spices such as ginger, turmeric, and lemongrass.

Whether you’re a food lover or a casual tourist visiting Mindanao, this is one of the best Mindanaoan food that you should include in your must-eats.

Latal or dulang in Sulu

Latal isn’t just one dish, it’s a tray composed of several Tausug dishes. It is commonly served in traditional Filipino Muslim weddings, although I have also tried it in Zamboanga City (specifically in Bay Tal Mal Restaurant ) and in Jolo City, the capital of Sulu.

The highlight of latal is tiyula itum , or “black soup” made from beef and goat meat. It is served with a variety of side dishes, which includes plates of chicken and beef, fried calamares, and fred fish with sliced cucumbers and sambal.

Latal is a great Mindanao food to sample for groups, as you can taste a little bit of everything in one seating.

Bangbang or native delicacies in Sulu

Bangbang is a set of Tausug pastries typically eaten for breakfast in Sulu Province. Having bangbang is a unique experience because the staff serves you everything in a table and you only pay for what you eat. Having all these choices is also a delight to the eyes (and tastebuds)!

Some of the pastries in bangbang include

  • Daral (crepe with sweet coconut filling)
  • Palikambing (fried banana balls)
  • Jualan saing and jualan panggi (deep-fried bananas/sweet potato with sweet coco dip)
  • Wadjit (purple glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk)
  • Panggi-panggi (soft and chewy flour rings)
  • Biyaki (corn cake)
  • Apam (local pancake in Sulu)
  • Pastil (hand pies with  togue served with sweet, spicy sauce – not to be confused with the rice pastil).

Enjoy bangbang when you’re in Sulu . You can also sample it in select restaurants in Zamboanga City, such as Dennis Coffee Garden. Don’t forget to have it with kahawa sug (native robusta coffee)!

Rendang is a delicious beef stew that originated in Indonesia. It was brought to the Philippines by the Maranao people and can be found in various places in Mindanao and even downtown Quiapo in Manila.

Filipino rendang is drier than the original recipe in Indonesia. It also uses palapa (a Maranao condiment made of toasted coconut and other ingredients) combined with muscovado sugar and is cooked similar to that of adobo. The resulting dish is sweet, spicy, and delicious.

Whether you’re a fan of the original rendang or you’re trying this dish for the first time, Filipino rendang is one of the Mindanao food you shouldn’t miss.

Beef Kulma is another treasure that Mindanao’s food scene offers. This stew is made of beef cooked in coconut milk, peanut butter, and tomato paste. It is often described as a mix between kare-kare and traditional curry.

This is a Tausug dish deeply rooted in Mindanao’s Muslim communities. It is often prepared on special celebrations such as Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. Over the years, it has become more common in regular households.

Hacienda del Palmeras - knickerbocker

For desserts, make sure to try a cup of knickerbocker, a famous dessert in Zamboanga City. Knickerbocker is made with diced fruits (such as bananas, ripe mangoes, watermelons, and apples) tossed together with jelly and sweetened milk. The crowning glory is a scoop of strawberry ice cream on top, which adds a delightful contrast to the fresh, juicy fruits.

Knickerbocker is often likened to halo-halo but made healthier and also less sweet. For people like me who love dessert but not necessarily overly sweet dishes, it is perfect! This dessert was popularized by Hacienda de Palmeras Hotel & Restaurant . Nowadays, you can also find it in other restaurants around the city and food stalls in Paseo del Mar , a coastal park in Zamboanga City.

Native delicacies in Lamitan

Lokot-lokot is a delicious, crunchy snack made from rice flour, sugar, and oil. It’s oily and a guilty pleasure for sure!

I had first sampled lokot-lokot in Lamitan City , where there are food stalls with vendors making it from scratch. You can then buy it freshly cooked! It is also available in pasalubong centers in Zamboanga City.

Sayongsong is one of the most popular snacks in Surigao City, as well as other neighboring areas in Mindanao. It is a mildly sweet, ube-colored dessert made of sticky rice, which is cooked with coconut milk and sugar, and then wrapped in a cone-shaped banana leaf.

It is cheap and best eaten freshly cooked from the cauldron.

Durian - one of the must-try Mindanao food

Another must-try food in Mindanao is durian. Known as the “ King of Fruits ,” durian is a fruit that people either love or hate due to its strong smell. Despite its notorious reputation, durian has a distinct creamy and rich taste that is loved by many. The fruit’s outer skin is covered in formidable thorns, but once cracked open, it reveals a custard-like flesh that is sweet and buttery.

Durian can be found in abundance in Mindanao, particularly in Davao City. There are numerous farms where you can taste different varieties of this fruit, each having its own unique flavor. It is often enjoyed fresh, but you can also find it incorporated in local desserts and delicacies such as durian pastillas , durian cheesecake , and even durian ice cream !

If you’re adventurous with your food choices, Durian is definitely a Mindanao food experience you wouldn’t want to miss.

Group shot at Ate Sidang's house

As mentioned above, there are a lot of places in Mindanao with abundance of fresh seafood. So don’t forget to order seafood delicacies when you’re in cities such as Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, Sulu, Basilan, or Tawi-Tawi.

One of my best foodie experiences was staying in Tawi-Tawi with our homestay host Ate Sidang, who went to the daily market everyday and cooked us all sorts of fishes, crabs, and calamares. The freshness (and delicious cooking) really makes all the difference!

Eating in Mindanao is more than just a culinary adventure, it’s also a cultural experience. A lot of the dishes in Mindanao reflect the diverse communities of the region. Each bite tells a story and takes you on a journey through the rich history, tradition, and culture of Mindanao.

So the next time you visit here, make sure to try these foods in Mindanao! Trust us, your taste buds will thank you for it!
