Concert Review: Peter Gabriel – i/o Tour – Dublin, Ireland 6/25/23
Review of Peter Gabriel’s i/o Tour in Dublin, Ireland
Images and Words: Geoff Bailie
When “heritage acts” (for example, a 73-year-old former prog rock band frontman) tour these days, the recipe is fairly standard: plenty of “old”, even if the vocal cords can’t quite reach the heights of youth; a few deep cuts to mix it up and reward the faithful and; maybe even a few new songs, to show modern relevance and provide the aging audience with a comfort break slot.
However, that’s not a formula that interests Peter Gabriel. In the 22-track setlist tonight, there’s no Genesis (no surprise there!), one song from the 1970s, six from the 1980s, two from the 1990s, two from his last studio album in 2002, and … wait for it… 11 songs from his yet to be released new album – i / o. Of those 11, six have been shared with the public at the time of the show, with the Full Moon releases expected to let us glimpse the rest. It’s unconventional, but let’s face it, Gabriel has been walking “right out of the machinery” for most of his career!
While the arena and stage area were packed with technology and equipment, the show began very simply with a stripped-back version of “Washing Of The Water,” with Gabriel on piano and solo-career-long bassist Tony Levin. The focus was set right where it should be – on the music. Band members joined then around a “virtual” campfire for “Growing Up” – not exactly fireside singalong material, but a cool reinvention and, perhaps, a statement of intent that this wasn’t going to be a hit-packed romp through the back catalog. Peter spent time between most of the songs explaining their significance and in the case of the new songs, the origin of the accompanying artwork, which formed the basis of the stage presentations of those tracks.
Let’s address the issue of new material head-on. Instead of putting out a new album in the traditional way, Gabriel has released songs one by one at each full moon. Despite not having put out a new album of original material since 2002, Peter Gabriel has drip-fed various tracks over those years via soundtracks and one-off singles (so if you’ve missed “Courage,” “I’m Amazing,” “The Veil” and “This is Partyman,” nevermind the Rated PG album, you really should seek them out). So in a sense, the drip feed just got a bit faster! Personally I’m enjoying getting the tracks in this way, and each one is released in 3 variations, or 4 if you count surround mixes.
The major surprise for me was how well these songs come across in concert. The band plays them with confidence and, in many cases, with extra “bite” and beauty that aren’t as clear in the recordings. The main first set had new songs in blocks of 3, starting with “Panopticom” which was greeted with as much enthusiasm as an old favourite (one shout of “D.I.Y.” was unsurprisingly not responded to!). “Four Kinds of Horses” was beautiful and i/o has a massive singalong factor. Even better was… of the five songs that were played which have yet to be released, “Olive Tree” and “This Is Home,” I think, will end up being ranked with Gabriel’s finest songs! “Olive Tree” has a soul feel that was very energetic, while This Is Home is a beautiful ballad dedicated to his mother. “Sledgehammer” closed out part one – perhaps included as a reward for those who has lasted through the new material… but it was clear that the crowd was loving the entire show!
“Darkness” and “Love Can Heal” started the second half with some increase visual, lighting and tech tricks… I’ll not spoil those for anyone going to the US shows! The main part of this set alternated new tracks with songs from the So album, many of which were given extra twists. At this point, I should mention the band and their influence on those sounds. Again Peter has tried something completely different… Tony Levin, Manu Katche and David Rhodes are of course Gabriel band stalwarts, and their input forms the backbone of the sound. However, this time they are joined by five other musicians (not counting PG on keys of course!). Marina Moore and Ayanna Witter-Johnston provide cellos, violins and violas, bringing lots of new elements – plus Ayanna duets on “Don’t Give Up” in an outstanding performance. Richard Evans, a studio collaborator of Gabriel’s for many years added stringed and wind instruments, while Josh Shpak added horns and trumpets, in ways and in places where you would not expect, all of which added depth of textures in the songs. Finally, when recording tracks, Brian Eno recommended Don E to Peter, and he joined the live band, primarily on keyboard but adding funk and vocoder/synth parts.
I’ve already called out Ayanna’s duet on Don’t Give Up, but Gabriel’s vocal on “Don’t Give Up” was equally mesmerizing. The main set closed with a funked up “Big Time,” with Don E adding his touch to the song, a new anthemic track called Live and Let Live, and Gabriel’s first solo single, “Solsbury Hill.” It’s not often you see an artist in their 70s performing their first solo single, in the same key as it was recorded in almost 50 years previously and singing it so fantastically.
The encores were the now expected “In Your Eyes” (my favorite Gabriel song, and possibly my favorite song full stop) and the classic “Biko.” Unlike some of his era, Gabriel’s political messages were addressed sensitively – the audience contained Mary Robinson, the 7th president of Ireland – she received a standing ovation and who is connected to Gabriel due to her human rights work. Biko is still a powerful ending to a show, with its simplicity, the strength of its message and its sheer power.
Dublin was the closing night of the European tour and after a summer break the show hits the US. For Prog Report readers, I would really recommend you catch this brave, exciting and amazing show. For me the evening was a pleasure to experience an artist at the peak of his powers at this stage in his career … and maybe we’ll even get an album!!!

Peter Gabriel Announces 2023 Tour
Tina Benitez-Eves
Updated:
For the first time in nearly a decade, Peter Gabriel announces an official solo trek outside of North America. The singer returns to Europe and the U.K. in 2023 for his “i/o The Tour,” which supports his forthcoming album of the same name.
Videos by American Songwriter
The tour, which kicks off on May 18, in Krakow, Poland, and concludes on June 23, in Dublin, Ireland, consists of 22 shows across U.K. and Europe.
“It’s been awhile and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road,” Gabriel said in a statement. “Look forward to seeing you out there.”
Gabriel previously teamed with Sting on the road in 2016 for the pair’s “Rock Paper Scissors” trek. He last toured solo in 2014 with the “Back to Front Tour,” which commemorated the 25th anniversary of his fifth album, So . He released his most recent album of new, original material in 2002 with Up . In 2010, Gabriel unveiled a covers albums Scratch My Back , followed by 2011’s New Blood , a collection of orchestral re-recordings of songs spanning his career.

Though a release date for i/o hasn’t been announced, more details of the album are forthcoming. Earlier in 2022, Gabriel said he had a number of new songs he was “trying to get finished” and initially planned to release something by the end of 2022. In 2021, Gabriel posted a series of photos featuring himself with longtime drummer Manu Katché, guitarist David Rhodes and bassist Tony Levin, at his Real World Studios in Wiltshire, England.
Gabriel also shared that he and his band worked on 17 songs in 10 days.
“I’m excited by what is being cooked at the moment,” said Gabriel when he first began teasing new music in 2020. “I have been slowed down quite a lot by lockdown. We’ve not been able to have Dickie [engineer Richard Chappell], but I have enough songs that I like, to make a record I’m proud of.”

Peter Gabriel announces first UK & Ireland tour in nine years
Taking place in June 2023
Peter Gabriel has announced a five-date UK & Ireland arena tour for summer 2023.
The culmination of a 22-date European trek, the UK & Ireland leg of i/o - The Tour opens at Birmingham Utilita Arena on Saturday 17th June and visits London The O2, Glasgow OVO Hydro, Manchester AO Arena and Dublin 3 Arena.
It’s the first time Genesis legend Peter Gabriel has toured the UK since the Back To Front Tour back in autumn 2014.
Peter Gabriel tickets:
Tickets to the UK dates of Peter Gabriel’s i/o - The Tour go on sale from Planet Rock Tickets at 10am on Friday 11th November 2022.
i/o - The Tour will see Gabriel playing new material from his forthcoming album i/o, as well as delving into his peerless catalogue of music, with hits, fan favourites and the unexpected. For the shows, Gabriel will be joined by regular band-mates Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché.
Peter Gabriel said of the tour: “It’s been a while and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road for a spin. Look forward to seeing you out there.”
The mainland Europe dates kick off in Krakow, Poland on 18th May 2023, with dates in Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland.

18 album covers that look similar to other album covers, including genesis:, scott weiland – ‘12 bar blues’ (1998).
The late-great Stone Temple Pilots singer's debut solo album features a blue-tinged image of Scott on the cover.
John Coltrane – ‘Blue Train’ (1958)
From the image to the font, Scott Weiland's '12 Bar Blues' is a homage to jazz legend John Coltrane's landmark 'Blue Train' album from 40 years earlier.
Anthrax – ‘Kings Among Scotland’ (2018)
The thrash metallers' 2018 live album 'Kings Among Scotland', which captures their 2017 show at Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom, came with this visually striking animated sleeve.
Kiss - ‘Rock and Roll Over’ (1976)
The Anthrax sleeve is an overt parody of the aesthetically vibrant animated cover to Kiss's fifth studio album 'Rock and Roll Over'.
The Clash - ‘London Calling’ (1979)
The seminal cover to The Clash's 'London Calling' features a black-and-white image of bassist Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision Bass at the Palladium in New York City. It was created by designer Ray Lowry.
Elvis Presley - ‘Elvis Presley’ (1956)
With its pink and green lettering and black-and-white photo, 'London Calling' pays direct homage to Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album from 23 years earlier.
Iron Maiden - ‘Powerslave’ (1984)
The heavy metal legends' long-term artist Derek Riggs designed the Ancient Egyptian themed cover to their fifth album 'Powerslave.' Truly one of the best sleeves in metal history.
Earth, Wind & Fire - ‘All n’ All’ (1977)
Visually, Iron Maiden's 'Powerslave' is extremely similar to Earth, Wind & Fire's album 'All n' All' from seven years earlier. Maiden artist Derek Riggs has dismissed the idea he copied the funk band, saying: "Somebody somewhere said it was inspired by an Earth Wind & Fire cover, but that's just crap. Because of the song Bruce wrote it had to be Egyptian, so I went back to the tomb of Rameses 2 and copied the idea from that (just like Earth, Wind & Fire did) but mine is better. It's also got a hieroglyph Micky mouse in the bottom left corner. Ha! Earth Wind and Fire don't have a Mickey Mouse. Obviously inferior." Well said, Derek!
Mötley Crüe – ‘Too Fast for Love’ (1981)
The artwork to Mötley Crüe's debut album features a close-up of a rock star's crotch area.
The Rolling Stones - ‘Sticky Fingers’ (1971)
Mötley Crüe's 'Too Fast for Love' is, of course, a tribute to The Rolling Stones' infamous 'Sticky Fingers artwork from a decade earlier. Created by legendary artist Andy Warhol, the visible outline of the model's manhood caused quite a stir upon the album's release 49 years ago.
Deep Purple – ‘Deep Purple’ (1969)
The dark and macabre cover artwork to 1969's self-titled 'Deep Purple' is adorned with the right-hand painting from Hieronymus Bosch's 15th Century triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights. It depicts the horrors of hell.
Pearls Before Swine - ‘One Nation Underground’ (1967)
Deep Purple weren't the first band to use The Garden of Earthly Delights on their album sleeve – Floridian psychedelic folk act Pearls Before Swine used a slightly different part of the painting for their 1967 debut album 'One Nation Underground'.
Manowar - ‘Fighting the World’ (1987)
Manowar enlisted fantasy artist Ken Kelly to create the 'Fighting the World' sleeve.
Kiss - ‘Destroyer’ (1976)
The 'Destroyer' cover art was also designed by Ken Kelly and features Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss standing atop some rubble with destroyed buildings in the background.
Led Zeppelin – ‘Physical Graffiti’ (1975)
Led Zeppelin's iconic 'Physical Graffiti' depicts two side-by-side tenement buildings located at 96 and 98 St. Mark's Place in New York's East Village. JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, astronaut Neil Armstrong, Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, King Kong, the Virgin Mary, Judy Garland and Led Zeppelin themselves are among the faces peering out of the windows.
Jose Feliciano - ‘Compartments’ (1973)
The concept for Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Grafitti' cover was allegedly inspired by the sleeve on Puerto Rican guitarist Jose Feliciano's 1973 album 'Compartments', which features different faces peering out of windows.
Genesis – ‘Land of Confusion’ (1986)
Just like the hilarious video, Genesis' 'Land of Confusion' single artwork features Spitting Image incarnations of Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford.
The Beatles - ‘With The Beatles’ (1963)
Genesis' 'Land of Confusion' is a hilarious pastiche of the artwork on The Beatles' second studio album 'With The Beatles.'
The Who – ‘The Who Sings My Generation’ (1966)
The US edition of The Who's debut album 'My Generation' not only featured a different title and track list but also alternative artwork of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon stood in front of the Big Ben clock tower.
The Rockin’ Berries – ‘In Town’ (1964)
Two years before The Who's 'The Who Sings My Generation', Birmingham beat group The Rockin' Berries released their debut album 'In Town', which also featured an image of the band standing in front of the Big Ben clock tower against a blue sky. A minor hit, the album dented the UK album chart at no.15.
Tom Waits ‘The Heart of Saturday Night’ (1974)
Gravelly voiced singer Tom Waits' second album features an illustration of a tired Waits being observed by a blonde haired woman as he exits a neon-lit cocktail lounge late at night.
Frank Sinatra ‘In the Wee Small Hours’ (1955)
Tom Waits' 'The Heart of Saturday Night' is based on 'In the Wee Small Hours' by Frank Sinatra, which depicts the singer on an eerie and deserted street awash in blue-tinged streetlights. Tom Waits listed 'In the Wee Small Hours' as his favourite album of all time in a 2005 interview with The Guardian.
The Mothers of Invention - ‘We're Only In It for the Money’ (1968)
Frank Zappa's art director Cal Schenkel and Jerry Schatzberg photographed a collage for the 'We're Only In It for the Money' album cover that directly parodied The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', which was released a year earlier. Zappa's good mate Jimi Hendrix appears on the sleeve on the right hand side where the wax sculpture of Sonny Liston appears on The Beatles' sleeve. Much to Zappa's dismay, Capitol Records issued the album with an alternate photograph and the Beatles parody was demoted to the inside cover.
The Beatles – ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ (1967)
Here's the iconic sleeve to The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' designed by pop artists Peter Blake and Jann Haworth.
Lordi - ‘Beast Loose In Paradise’ (2008)
The monstrous Finnish metallers, who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 with their song 'Hard Rock Hallelujah', released a single called 'Beast Loose In Paraside' in 2008 for the soundtrack to their film 'Dark Floors'. The artwork features a very blue photograph of Lordi.
Kiss - ‘Creatures of the Night’ (1982)
Lordi's 'Beast Loose In Paradise' single cover pays tribute to the sleeve to Kiss' 10th studio album 'Creatures of the Night'.
12. Uriah Heep – ‘Live at Shepperton '74’ (1986)
Released 12 years after it was recorded at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, 'Live at Shepperton '74' features a bootleg LP style brown paper sleeve with a stamp of the Uriah Heep band name and album title.
The Who - ‘Live at Leeds’ (1970)
Uriah Heep's 'Live at Shepperton '74' is clearly highly reminiscent of The Who's seminal 1970 live album 'Live at Leeds'. It could be argued that 'Live at Leeds' is in fact a homage to The Rolling Stones' bootleg LP 'Live'r Than You'll Ever Be' from 1969.
David Bowie ‘The Next Day’ (2013)
The cover to David Bowie's 24th studio album 'The Next Day' is a tweaked version of Bowie's 1977 album "Heroes" and features a white square obscuring the music legend's face. It was designed by Jonathan Barnbrook, who also created the 'Heathen' and 'Black Star' sleeves, and is meant to signify wiping out the past.
David Bowie – “Heroes” (1977)
Here's the "Heroes" cover from 1977 featuring an iconic image of David Bowie taken by photographer Masayoshi Sukita. The pose was inspired by German artist Erich Heckel's 1917 painting Roquairol.
Slade – ‘Till Deaf Do Us Part’ (1981)
Slade's tenth studio album featured a lovely image of a nail being hammered into an ear canal. Delightful stuff.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band – ‘The Roaring Silence’ (1976)
Slade's 'Till Deaf Do Us Part' is highly reminiscent of Manfred Mann's Earth Band's 'The Roaring Silence' from 15 years earlier, which features a huge outer ear with a mouth inside it. It was created by artist Derek Goldsmith.
Thee Oh Sees / Paul Cary – ‘Thee Oh Sees / Paul Cary’ (2010)
San Francisco alternative rock band Thee Oh Sees released a self-titled split 7" single with musician Paul Cary in 2010.
Rush – ‘Rush’ (1974)
Thee Oh Sees' single is of course a carbon copy of Rush's eponymous debut album from 1974.
David Byrne – ‘Grown Backwards’ (2004)
The Talking Heads frontman's sixth solo album features a photograph of Byrne gazing into the yonder.
Phil Collins – ‘… But Seriously’ (1989)
Genesis drummer/vocalist Phil Collins also gazed pensively into the yonder on his fourth solo album.

I saw him in the eighties. Amazing music and amazing lighting. At one point he was on an all-black stage but encased in a box of phosphorescent green light. The sound was also amazing. Maybe, the best concert I've ever seen and I've seen many great ones!

Wanted to see Peter Gabriel for decades and I was not disappointed! Together with Sting and special guest Eddie Vedder, he put on an amazing show with his voice as strong as ever. So glad I was able to check this off of my bucket list!
This was by far one of the best shows I have ever seen. They have so many hits between the two of them... Peter joked what we would be treated to a full night of karaoke. They kept their promise! I am going back for the second night...the show is just too good to miss a minute of!

Review of Peter Gabriel's i/o Tour in Dublin, Ireland. Images and Words: Geoff Bailie. When "heritage acts" (for example, a 73-year-old former prog rock band frontman) tour these days, the recipe is fairly standard: plenty of "old", even if the vocal cords can't quite reach the heights of youth; a few deep cuts to mix it up and reward the faithful and; maybe even a few new songs, to ...
