Is that a roundtrip across town and country for less than it costs for a good coffee nowadays??  

Yes! While specific charges vary according to different zones and travel times, your Seniors Myki will cap out at just $5.30 for a daily fare during the week. On weekends, the daily cap is $3.60! This includes travel to and from regional Victoria, as well as within all of Metropolitan Melbourne.

A Myki card is a reloadable public transport ticket or travel card used for all modes of travel on public transport in Victoria. This includes trains, trams and buses.

When am I eligible for a Seniors Myki card?

You need a Victorian Seniors Card, which is available to permanent residents of Victoria aged 60 or above and who work less than 35 hours a week. It’s issued by the State Govt. Department of Health and Human Services. Apply online here.  

How do I get a Seniors Myki card?

Seniors Myki card holders pay 50% of the standard adult fares on all travel across public transport throughout Victoria. The daily adult fare is capped at $10.60 on week days and $7.20 on weekends, while the Seniors Myki caps out at just $5.30 for a week day or $3.60 on weekends.

How can I access my Free Travel Vouchers?

Free Travel for Victorian Seniors Card Holders

Victorian Seniors Card holders are eligible for free travel on public transport across the State during the 2022 Victorian Seniors Festival. The 2022 festival will be held from Sunday 2 October to Sunday 9 October 2022.

How to travel: Victorian Seniors Card holders must always carry their Seniors myki and Victorian Seniors Card when travelling during the Victorian Seniors Festival.

Victorian Seniors are required to touch on and off as usual – fares during this period will not be deducted.

On regional services that don’t use myki, Seniors must show their Victorian Seniors Card to the driver when they board as proof of eligibility for free travel.

Where to travel: Victorian Seniors will be able to travel for free on most public transport in Victoria, including: • Melbourne trains, trams and buses • Regional trains, coaches and buses (including intertown and regional town bus services)

Free travel is limited to trips solely within Victoria. Airport buses and privately-run services (unsubsidised services) are excluded from this offering.

NOTE: Seniors from other Australian States and Territories are not eligible for free travel during this period. Normal concession fares apply.

Seniors Card Travel: Sydney to Melbourne for $9.60

This post was updated by the editor on 25/05/2023 The regular, half-priced concession, Seniors fare, single ticket, aboard the Sydney to Melbourne (Southern Cross) XPT is $65.13.

For Senior cardholders who don’t mind leaving Sydney earlier and arriving in Melbourne a few hours later, the fare drops to just $9.60. This trip operates Monday to Friday only. The journey starts aboard the 06:11 Opal train service from Central to Macarthur. You can find the timetable for this service at: https://transportnsw.info/routes/details/sydney-trains/t8/020T8

Alight the train at Campbelltown (one stop before Macarthur) and board the coach bound for Goulburn. The timetable for the coach service can be found at: https://transportnsw.info/document/4211/goulburn-to-sydney-timetable.pdf

The Campbelltown to Goulburn coach is a regular Opal service, so just tap on when you get on and tap off when you alight at Goulburn.

You’ll arrive at Goulburn railway station at 09:00 with an hour and thirteen minutes to grab a quick cuppa before boarding the Melbourne bound XPT which departs Goulburn at 10:13. Alight at Albury where the train arrives at 15:10 The timetable for this service is at: https://transportnsw.info/regional-southern-line

You’ll need to book the Goulburn to Albury leg of the journey either online at https://transportnsw.info/regional-bookings/ or call NSW trainLink on 13 22 32. The ticket you need is a Country Pensioner Excursion (CPE) ticket . The cost will be $2.50. Have your Seniors card or Pensioner card and a credit or debit card ready to pay. The last leg of the journey is aboard a Victorian V/Line service which departs Albury at 17:20. Y ou’re going to have a couple of hours to enjoy the sights of Albury. The main drag is just a block and a half from the station – a 5 minutes walk. You’ll need to book the Albury to Melbourne (Southern Cross) leg of the trip, either by calling VLine on 1800 800 007 or booking online at: https://www.vline.com.au/Plan-trip-buy-tickets The fare for Seniors (Concession) cardholders from Albury to Melbourne (Southern Cross) is $4.60. Each state and territory has its own Seniors Card, with some reciprocal arrangements for using your card when travelling in other states. Essentially, the Seniors Card is a free card that gives you transport concessions and access to discounts from thousands of participating businesses.

Even if you have not fully retired from the workforce, it’s worth checking to see if you are eligible for a Seniors Card as many states allow you to undertake some paid work and still receive a seniors card.

Tas – Seniors Card

Tasmanian Seniors Cards offer discounts on a range of goods and services from participating businesses – from local shopping and dining, to travel, entertainment and events, professional, personal, health, home, auto or financial services, and more.

  • Work less than 20 hours per week in paid employment averaged over 12-month period

The ACT Seniors Card is part of an Australia-wide scheme that recognises the valuable contribution of older people in their local community.

The ACT Seniors Card is issued free and provides access to savings on a range of goods and services provided by participating businesses. The purpose of the program is to encourage older people to keep active and engaged in the community, by providing incentives and making it more affordable to get out and about. The Seniors Card program is free, and there are no application charges associated with the card.

Is the Seniors Card free?

Yes! The Seniors Card is free.

The Seniors Card is free for all eligible Victorians who are aged over 60, years of age, a permanent resident of Australia, residing in Victoria.

What do I do if I have lost my seniors myki card

There are three ways to replace lost or stolen myki cards:

1. In person at a PTV hub External Link , or a premium metropolitan station or staffed V/Line station External Link inside the myki boundary.

2. Online at Public Transport Victoria website External Link .

3. By phoning 1800 800 007.

Sorry, the Seniors Card program cannot replace lost myki cards.

What is the Seniors Business Discount Card?

The Seniors Business Discount Card is available to Australian residents aged 60 years and over who permanently reside in Victoria, and work 35 hours or more per week. The Seniors Business Discount Card is free of charge.

Seniors Business Discount Card holders can access discounts from thousands of participating businesses across Victoria. Most businesses offer a minimum of 10% discount on goods or services. The Seniors Business Discount Card does not provide public transport concessions. There are no application fees associated with this card when applying through our Online form .

Is there a Seniors Card for people under 60?

To be eligible for a Seniors Card or a Seniors Business Discount Card you must be 60 years of age, and meet the eligibility criteria.

This card is free. There are no costs associated with applying for this card.

The Victorian Seniors Card Program is not affiliated with any other private member organisations.

I have received a special offer in the mail. Is this from Seniors Card?

All Seniors Card special offers are sent out with the Seniors Card logo displayed on the envelope, and come with a flyer inside, entitled: "Important privacy information". The Seniors Card program complies with Victoria’s Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 and does not provide your personal information to businesses.

Please note that the Seniors Card program does not endorse or guarantee the quality or suitability of any goods or services offered by participating businesses.

Can Seniors Business Discount Card holders use a Seniors myki?

No. A Seniors myki can only be used with a Victorian Seniors Card.

If you use a Seniors myki to travel on public transport without a valid Seniors Card you may be liable for a fine of $277.

Why haven't I received my off-peak travel vouchers?

From 2020, the free off-peak travel vouchers are distributed annually by Public Transport Victoria.

Seniors Business Discount Card holders are not eligible to receive free off-peak travel vouchers.

about Seniors Card

If you have a Seniors Card issued by any Australian state or territory, you are entitled to concession fares on public transport in NSW. Some Seniors Cards are not accepted.

NSW Seniors Card eligibility

To be eligible for a NSW Seniors Card, you must be a NSW permanent resident aged 60 or over, doing no more than an average of 20 hours of paid work a week, across a 12 month period.

How to apply for a NSW Seniors Card

To apply for a NSW Seniors Card and any replacement, visit the NSW Seniors Card website or call 13 77 88 and your application will be processed over the phone.

NSW Seniors Cards are issued by the Department of Family and Community Services. Seniors Cards are issued free of charge and have no expiry.

Interstate Seniors Cards

If you do not reside in NSW, contact the applicable state government department in your home state or territory to apply for your Seniors Card.

If you already hold an interstate Seniors Card, you can apply for a Gold Opal card by completing the Interstate Seniors application form .

Important information before applying for a Gold Opal card:

  • Make sure you have your Seniors Card number ready
  • Prepare a photocopy or scan of your Seniors Card (front and back)
  • Application forms and supporting documents are to be uploaded and submitted online via the Concessions application form
  • Please submit at least three to four weeks before travelling to NSW

Seniors Cards not accepted

Concession fares are not available to holders of other types of seniors cards, such as:

  • New Zealand SuperGold Card
  • National Seniors Card
  • NSW Seniors Savers Card
  • Seniors Business Discount Card
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card

You must carry your Seniors Card or digital Seniors Card when travelling on a concession fare as proof of entitlement or you may be fined.

Concessions are generally not available on private ferries, event shuttle buses, chartered buses and Great Southern Rail services.

opal Sydney and surrounding areas

When travelling within the Opal network , eligible seniors are entitled to use a Gold Senior/ Pensioner Opal card. You'll need your proof of entitlement card to apply and must carry it with you at all times.

If you do not have your proof of entitlement card, you are required to pay for and travel with an Adult fare, or you may be fined for travelling on an invalid ticket .

NSW/ACT Seniors: NSW and ACT Seniors Card holders can apply on the Opal website .

Interstate Seniors: Interstate Seniors Card holders (except from the ACT) can apply for new or replacement Gold Opal cards by completing the Interstate Seniors application form (pdf 283KB) .
