  • Floaters or Sandals:  When you are spending your day at leisure, a good pair of sandals and floaters will help you to move freely.
  • 1 Down Jacket / Main Jacket:  It’s emphasized that you need to carry proper layers so you can avoid getting cold which is why you need to carry an insulated jacket that you can put on over your other clothes.
  • 1 Pair of Thermal:  Thermal is a piece of garment that helps in keeping your body warm in cold temperatures. It is a necessary item that you need when traveling to cold regions.
  • Outdoor Shoes:  A comfortable shoe is required when traveling outdoors, especially in the mountains. They shouldn’t be chunky, instead, they should be lightweight and sturdy.
  • 3 Quick Dry Tees:  You must keep at least three pairs of quick dry tees so that you can wash them in between stops for proper hygiene.
  • 3 Pair of Cotton Socks:  Cotton socks are extremely comfortable to move around in and are lightweight as well which is why you can always count on a good pair of cotton socks while traveling. However, keep in mind to change them and avoid wearing them if they are moist.
  • 1 Pair of Woolen Socks:  A good pair of woolen socks, especially merino, are comfortable, limit odors and provide adequate insulation from the cold so you can wear them at night.
  • 1 Poncho:  A poncho is an evolved form of a raincoat that provides coverage to your body as well as your bag and ensures total water protection from the rain.

  • Sunglasses / People who use spectacles (Use Photochromic glasses instead of contact lenses) : Photochromatic glasses are specs that are designed to transform into anti-glare shades depending upon exposure to the sun. They are good when it comes to eye protection but one can also opt for clip-on glasses etc.

Himachal Pradesh celebrates the Doongri Festival in May. The highlight of this festival is a colourful fair held near the famous Hadimba Temple called the Hadimba Devi Fair.

This festival marks the coming of spring when the entire Kullu valley will soon be in bloom. To add some fun and colour to this festival, many competitions take place with small kites flying in the sky. This Spring welcome is also called ‘Basant Panchami’ in different parts of the country.

When you’re visiting this festival through our Kasol to Kullu Manali tour packages , you’ll find large tents where you can watch dancers performing folk dances. There are also stalls selling handicrafts made by local vendors who sell their wares at very reasonable prices compared to what they would go for back home or online!

Another highlight is watching jugglers perform tricks with balls made out of straws or rope while balancing themselves on wooden stools; then there are also fire-eaters who throw flaming torches into their mouths.

If you are planning to visit Himachal in the near future (of course with the pandemic not around the corner) or have already booked the tickets to visit Himachal, this blog will be helpful to get a proper Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary.

In this blog we will talk about how we planned our trip, which places we wanted to cover in Himachal this time around, how you should plan your journey, places to stay, things to see and last but not the least how you can manage the entire trip within a proper budget.

Himachal Pradesh lies in the Northern part of India and has been a major center of tourist attraction since decades. Off late the state has gained major popularity with backpackers exploring the smallest corner of the state, which not only offers the most majestic views of the Himalayas but also provides the gush of fresh air, peace & tranquility which people coming from bustling cities actually craves.

Tourism is one of the main sources of income for the locals with farming and agriculture topping the charts. The state depends heavily on tourism which has actually increased the per capita income of the locals to quite some extent. Himachal is very popular for tourists mainly coming from Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh which constitute the major bulk. Few popular places to visit are Shimla, Manali, Kasol, Kalpa, Kinnaur, Lahaul, Spiti, Dharamsala, Dalhousie etc.

While discussing with the locals, we got to know that there are 3 major routes by which one can explore Himachal. One which starts from Pathankot and continues to Dharamsala, Dalhousie & Khajjiar, the other one covers Shimla, Kullu, Manali & Rohtang Pass and last but not the least the other route covers Kalpa, Kinnaur, Kaza, Lahaul & Spiti. Tourists coming from distant places ideally chooses one out of these three routes to cover their journey. If you want to merge two routes or all three of them, you definitely can but it all depends on how many days you have with you and in which season you are planning your trip.

Coming back to our first visit to Himachal, we had the year end holidays up on our sleeves with 6 nights and 7 days in total to explore.  Lets find out how we planned our tour and give you a proper Kullu Manali Kasol Itinerary.

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 1 – December 25, 2021

As mentioned earlier, amongst the three routes to explore Himachal we decided and chose the one which leads to Shimla, Kullu, Manali & Rohtang Pass. After going through many reviews, videos and talking to the locals we decided to skip Shimla this time as everyone advised against it, wth Shimla being too touristy and crowded during year end holidays.

We booked our train tickets from Howrah to Kalka 3 months back knowing there will be huge rush during this season. The Kalka mail has been renamed to Netaji Express Special (12311) which departed from Howrah on December 25th at 21:55 PM and would reach Kalka on December 27th at 3:00 AM. Kalka is the nearest station to Shimla if you are planning to cover Shimla as well. However as we wanted to skip Shimla we opted to get down at Chandigarh and head towards Manali directly.

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 2 – December 26, 2021

The train crosses important stations like Asansol, Mughal Sarai, Allahabad, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Delhi, Ambala etc. on its way. If you are travelling in AC coaches, IRCTC will not allow vendors to enter in the train apart from their own pantry staff. So you will get very minimal food options and the food offered by them are of very poor quality. Try ordering from IRCTC online catering where they will provide you food from various local vendors at specified stations and the quality is much better. (PS – Don’t try their Biryani) .

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 3 – December 27, 2021

With Kalka carrying a huge reputation of delay, we finally reached Chandigarh at 3AM with a 2 hour delay. As we had booked our cab as an entire package for the full trip from Chandigarh to Chandigarh, we found it waiting outside the railway station only as soon as we got down. (Tip – Try to avoid booking a cab for the entire package in Himachal, reason will share in details in a separate blog)

trip to shimla manali kasol

The journey from Chandigarh to Manali is absolutely mesmerizing. If you are planning to go directly to Manali always start early from Chandigarh as the traffic situation in Himachal is worse. A normal journey from Chandigarh to Manali would take 10 – 12 hours considering you stop for two halts on the way for breakfast and lunch with a total distance close to 310 KM. Now if you get stuck in traffic this can go up to 15-16 hours as well which could be quite tiresome. If you want to come to Manali via bus you can also opt for Volvo bus services from Delhi and Chandigarh as well which could save a lot of bucks. Himachal have their own Interstate buses as well which you can opt. I will keep the interstate buses the last option considering the fact the distance , condition of the roads and level of comfort.

The cab package generally varies from season to season. If you are coming in peak season they would generally charge Rs 4000 per day and during off season it can come down to 2500-2800 depending on the type of vehicle. We opted for a 6 seater Innova from Chandigarh to Chandigarh pickup and drop for Rs 30,000 for the entire trip which would cover Manali, Kasol and Manikaran.

We reached Manali at around 3 PM and checked in to our hotel, Hotel Greenfields. Our hotel is situated near the Hadimba Devi temple in Old Manali which is one of the best places we would suggest for travelers. If you are coming to Manali stay in Old Manali, rather than staying near the Mall road. Old Manali has the best vibe and scenic beauty and people over here are mostly quite chilled in terms of hospitality. On the contrary the Mall road area is filled with heavy traffic and flocking with tourists which you surely would want to avoid if you want a peaceful and memorable vacation. In one word try to stay as far away from the Mall Road as possible.  Our hotel had one of the best views of the snow capped mountains from the terrace with a calm and peaceful environment all around. Upon checking in, we took rest for the remaining part of the day.

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 4 – December 28, 2021

Today we planned to visit nearby places of Kullu and Naggar. We set of for our sightseeing at around 9 AM. On the way we stopped for our breakfast near the bank of the Beas river. The river bank was beautiful with snow capped mountains covered on all sides and the gushing Beas river flowing in the middle of the valley. We stopped for sometime to click few pictures and had a sumptuous breakfast. If you are travelling this side, tell your cab driver to stop near the bridge and walk a little towards the river bank to get the best view of the mountains and the river

trip to shimla manali kasol

Manali is one of the top spot for River rafting and Paragliding. We did not do the Paragliding as we had other plans and as far as river rafting goes we already have done that in our trip to Rishikesh. Read our rafting experience of Rishikesh here.

On our way we stopped at a local shawl factory to explore the different types of Kullu shawls and woolen clothes and materials. If you want you can also purchase from here.

We as a nature lover wanted to explore the raw beauty of nature and explore the villages of the Kullu valley. Our main aim was to avoid the touristy places and explore the locale more. We stopped near the Baishno Devi Temple as one of the point of attraction. Its a multistory temple which houses most of the Hindu gods and deities with a beautiful interior architecture comprising of wood and stones.

trip to shimla manali kasol

Our next stop was Jana waterfall and the road leading to it was beautiful. Our car was passing by small village paths and local markets of the Kullu district and we could spot the simple livelihood of the people residing there which was quite a pleasant experience.

The path to the Jana waterfall is a quick 5 minute hike from the roadways, do definitely try to reach the source of the waterfall.

trip to shimla manali kasol

From there we went to visit the famous Naggar castle which has witnessed quite a lot of Bollywood movie shootings inside it, most popular among them are Jab We Met, Maachis, Roza, Barsaat etc. The castle is made up of rock and wood and was constructed in the 14th century. The famous castle of  Raja Sidh Singh was later converted to a heritage hotel in 1978 by the Government. The view of the Kullu valley from the castle is something to die for. Keep this as a part of your sight seeing plan definitely if you are planning for Manali.

trip to shimla manali kasol

Just outside the Naggar Castle there is this little cafe Naggar Delight Cafe which everyone should definitely visit. We had one of the best homemade Bakery items. Do try this one.

trip to shimla manali kasol

We enjoyed the rest of the evening near the Mall road. The mall road features many small cafes, shops and restaurants where tourists visit. The price of anything in the mall road is exorbitantly high. So avoid shopping from the Mall road, try to visit their local market at the back end of the mall road. You would get autos to and fro from mall road to your hotels as well.

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 5 – December 29, 2021

We started early once again today at around 8 AM to visit the famous Solang Valley and Atal Tunnel. But to our surprise with the huge rush of tourist coming in Manali this week, we could not even cover 1/3 rd of the path also and got stuck near a place in Manali in the huge traffic. The traffic was standstill for 3 hours with hardly any movement. The distance from Manali to Solang Valley is only 16 km, which ideally should take 1 hour to reach, but during this time we heard from tourists that it takes 10 – 12 hours as well to go up and come down from there due to the crazy traffic. The Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel was closed for that day due to heavy snowfall. The traffic situation in Himachal is for real and we have witnessed it first hand. The Government should immediately look into this on an urgent basis as it will get worse day by day. We also noticed that the main reason behind the traffic is caused by the cars which are coming from the other states forming 2,3 lanes unnecessarily.

With Solang being too touristy and adding to it this huge traffic jam, we changed our mind and we opted to visit the Hampta Valley instead, by paying the cab driver a little something extra as the road leading to the valley is quite steep and dangerous. This was the best decision we ever took. The roads and the view of the Hampta Valley is far better than what we have seen in videos of Solang Valley and Atal Tunnel. (which is a little overrated we found). We took an U turn and started off for Hampta Valley and Sethan Village.

If you are planning for Hampta Valley , make sure you have a local Himachal driver with you and the car has to be a 4*4 vehicle. Due to snowfall the road gets quite slippery and its not safe for small vehicle and definitely not for the bikers. (Do not hire a bike or a scooty to go to Hampta Valley). We were lucky that we had a local driver with us who managed to wrap the tires of the car with chains like the army people do, which could easily cut down snow and lay a solid grip in the slippery road. We noticed a lot of cars whose tyres were slippery and instead they opted to park 4,5 km ahead of the valley and let the tourists walk those extra kms due to unavoidable circumstances as the roads are quite scary and steep. Luckily our cab went down till the end.

The valley was covered with snow all around. Also there were small road side stalls to eat over there as well. Tourists were also enjoying activities like Skiing and zip lining as well. Do definitely bargain for the activities.

Upon coming down we stopped in the nearby Sethan village which looked like a postcard picture. The village had mud & wooden houses, pine trees, small local shops with snow capped mountains on all sides with the sun shining right down on it. We did not get a chance to interact with the locals but next time if we come, we will plan to stay in a homestay near the village for sure.

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 6 – December 30, 2021

We started the day by visiting the famous Hadimba Devi Temple. Hadimba Devi is the wife of Bhima, one of the Pandavas from the famous Mahabharata. The temple stands amidst a dense Pine and Cedar forest which was built by Maharaja Bahadur Singh in 1553. The local devotees believes that this is the temple where Hindu deity Hadimba (Hidimba) meditated. This is perhaps the only temple we have seen dedicated to a demoness. Nearby the temple there is a tree temple of her son Ghatothkach as well.

trip to shimla manali kasol

From there we went to the Bana Bihar and Zoo which had nothing except tall Pine and Cedar trees where you can roam around and click some nice pictures of the beautiful canopy formation at the top.

trip to shimla manali kasol

The rest of the day we kept for ourselves to explore Old Manali. If you are visiting Manali, try to spend as much time as possible in exploring Old Manali local areas & market rather than spending time on the Mall Road. You will get a vibe of the actual Himachali people and their daily life. The Club house is also nearby which you can explore. Old Manali is less crowded, ambience is chilled, have some of the best bakeries and cafes and the prices of goods are also reasonable. This is an area which are being mostly visited by the foreigners. Smoking and drinking is quite open in this part of Manali and everyone is quite chilled with this. It has a similar resemblance to Kasol. We spent the rest of the evening in a cafe called Mount Walkers. The ambience and the food was fantastic and it has live music as well. Do definitely try this one.

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 7 – December 31, 2021

We checked out early and we headed towards Kasol and Manikaran. Kasol is a hamlet in the Kullu valley beside the Parvati river between Bhuntar and Manikaran. The place has gained a lot of popularity from young travelers due to its chilled ambience and very few restrictions all around. It is situated 75km from Manali. We wanted to cover Manikaran first and then check in to our home stay in Kasol. The road to Kasol from Bhuntar is picturesque with huge mountains on all sides and the beautiful Parvati river accompanying us through out the journey. Manikaran is situated around 6 km from Kasol and is famous for the Manikaran Sahib Gurdwara situated there.

Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara – Its is a famous pilgrimage spot for Hindus and Sikhs and this place is mentioned in the Twelfth Khalsa written by Giani Gian Sikh. This place has been often visited by the Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Ji. The hot boiling spring in the Gurudwara is used by locals and tourists. This place receives thousands of tourists all year around.

trip to shimla manali kasol

We also attended their Langar and were offered Kara Prasad as well. The road to Manikaran being single often encounters huge traffic. We took 1,5 hours to cover 5 kms, so you can imagine the level of traffic.

Upon our return we noticed many camps on the river bank for which Kasol is famous for, so if you are travelling to Kasol, do definitely try out their river camps which could be quite some experience. We opted for a homestay as Kasol rather than a camp because at night the temperature falls to -4°C as well. Being December 31st, the place was filled with tourists and there were huge traffic, but luckily again we chose a property which is a little away from the Main Kasol market (around 4kms) called Colonel’s Dacha. Its a beautiful homestay situated on the banks of the Parvati river beside the famous Kabila Camps. We enjoyed the rest of the evening in leisure.

trip to shimla manali kasol

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 8 – January 01, 2022

We kept this day for a trek to a small village called Chalal which is situated at a distance of 3 km from Kasol . There are lot of places you can explore from Kasol like Malana, Tosh, Kalga & Pulga, Kheerganga trek etc but as we had very limited time we only opted to visit Chalal. If you are in Kasol definitely go for this trek as its a quite easy one for beginners and you will remember the scenic beauty of the mountains which you will witness along the way forever. Through out the way you will get plenty of cafes to sit and relax as well if you get tired along the way and the beautiful Parvati river will be accompanying you through out the journey.

Chalal is situated at a height of 5300 ft and has managed to retain its old-world mountain village rustic charm. The beautiful houses, the simple livelihood of the people, the animals in the farm and the simple local people will surely attract you to come to this place again. If you are planning to lose yourself to the mountains Chalal is the perfect hamlet for you.

trip to shimla manali kasol

Upon coming back we visited the Kasol local market and spent the remaining day at leisure. Do try the Israeli cuisine and bakeries in Kasol with a view of the Parvati valley. We will cover in depth of the trek to Chalal on a separate blog.

Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary Day 9 – January 02, 2022

This is the last day of our trip. Try to check out and leave for Chandigarh as early as possible as you never know you can get stuck in a terrible traffic jam near Mandi. We took 12 hours to get down from Kasol to Chandigarh and finally boarded our train.

Conclusion – There are a lot of things we witnessed and lot to share, so it will be very difficult to cover all nitty gritty in one blog. Do keep checking our website for future blog . We have never witnessed this beauty of the Himalayas like this, what we saw in Manali and Kasol but there are a lot of negative things as well worth mentioning which we encountered during our trip. We will cover as much as possible so that you don’t encounter them and give you a proper Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary.

Tips for you to plan during Kullu Manali Kasol itinerary :

  • Try not to book a cab for the entire package, then you will have very less flexibility. The entire trip will be operated on the whims of the driver and the tour operator. We were lucky to have a good driver with us, but not everyone will be lucky. The commitment the operator or the hotel make with you during booking will change with due course of time. For example Atal Tunnel and Rohtang Pass was included in the package as instructed by our hotel, but upon arriving we were told that its not included. Luckily it was closed. For two days the cab was almost sitting idle as we covered most of the places already and they denied travelling to any other important or beautiful places on our request neither they compensated for that.
  • Almost all the cab drivers have connections with vendors for paragliding and rafting from where they get commission. If you don’t want to do any activities tell them upfront.
  • We met mostly nice people on our journey, but we also noticed that people are a little bit outspoken and a little rude even if its a petty issue.
  • Carry a lot of warm clothes with you if you are travelling in the months of December-February. Chances of snowfall depends on weather, so no one can predict upfront. Kasol river bank camps do not receive direct sunlight, hence the place gets very cold at night. We opted for Jackets, hiking shoes, fleece, gloves, socks from Decathlon and Wildcraft.
  • Plan your day early for sight seeing. The traffic is worse and if you get stuck at any point it will consume half of your day.
  • The cost of food in Manali is quite high, try to avoid the restaurants, cafes in Mall road. If you are booking a hotel add your breakfast as complimentary. In that way you can have your lunch on a roadside dhaba, restaurant, cafe at a cheaper price and dinner at the hotel (good if you can include dinner as well).
  • Do not have the pantry car food inside the train, the quality is very bad, order online from IRCTC Food booking you will get good food at a reasonable price on your selected station and on time.
  • Kasol and Old Manali is quite open for drinking, smoking pot and joint. If you are travelling with family you can definitely avoid these places, camps, cafes etc.
  • If you are a Bong, there are plenty of restaurants offering Bengali cuisine near the local market at the backend of the mall road.
  • If you are visiting Himachal do not litter. Please carry all the plastic along with you and dump in a dustbin. We witnessed lot of tourists carelessly throwing plastics on the road, in the snow, near the river, please be responsible while travelling.
  • It takes almost 10-12 hours to reach Manali, so you can definitely add Shimla on your trip which is like 4 hours from Chandigarh and 3 hours from Kalka Railway station. After spending two days, climb to Manali in that way travelling time will be less.
  • If you are coming by flight Chandigarh is the nearest airport. There is another airport in Kullu called the Bhuntar airport but flights to Bhuntar are very expensive and not frequent as well.

Also do read our Delhi and Nainital blog to plan journey to another hill station as well.

Day wise Itinerary

Day 1 : Chandigarh - Shimla

Welcome to Chandigarh, upon arrival our representative will receive you from railway station or airport and drive to Shimla (4 hours approx from Chandigarh). Rest of the day free at leisure. Overnight stay at hotel.

  • Themes : Hill Stations & Valleys

Day 2 : Shimla Sightseeing

After breakfast excursion to Kufri. Kufri is famous for its Himalayan National Park, Poney and Yak ride and one can see the endless Himalayan Panorama from Kufri, after lunch sightseeing of various places in and around. Shimla mosques built in (1830), Vice regal Lodge built in (1885), Christ Church built in (1844), The Gaiety Theater - the first beauty contest of world was supposed to start (1887), The Grindlays Bank (1912) – the world wide bank started by Robert Melville Grindlay, The Scandal Point and The famous shopping plaza of the North The Mall. At night drive to Kullu from Shimla to save time. At morning arrive to Kullu and rest in guest house.

Day 3 : Adventure Day in Kullu

This is the day for adventures. On arrival in Kullu take some rest in guest house. And at late morning you will move to do adventurous activities like river rafting and paragliding. After these activities you will move to Manali.

Day 4 : Kullu – Manali

After breakfast drive to Manali from Kullu. Rohtang Pass excursion. Excursion to Rohatang Pass. Situated at an altitude of 3979 mtrs above sea level and 51 kms outside Manali is the mighty Rohtang Pass - the gateway to Lahaul-Spiti valley. It affords a wide panoramic view of the mountains. Here one sees the majesty of the mountains at its height and splendour. At the top of the pass the air seems to glitter against the snow as you look down over herringboned ridges into the Lahaul valley. Evening at Leisure. O/N Hotel in Manali

Day 5 : Manali – Kasol (75 KM)

Checkout from the hotel drive to Kasol. Kasol - Nothing like a nice stroll down a cackling, churning and frothing river on one side and looming pine trees on the other. Clean white sand and smooth boulders separate the lush green grass from the tumbling blue-green water of the river. Every bend in the river opens up to an exciting vista of pine trees, cliffs and waterfalls. All this is framed with snowcapped peaks piercing the happy blue sky at the horizon. A great site to take those pictures you could show off on your wall. The river has a steep gradient and a greater mass of water, so it rages down in noisy torrents. It is inadvisable to cross the fierce river on foot. There is a rickety old wooden bridge for that. For a supremely pleasant leisure afternoon stretch out on one of the smooth boulders beside the river with your feet in the cold water. It could be an eternity in an hour or an hour stretching into a lifetime. And you can also go to the Manikaran Mahadev. Overnight stay at hotel or camp.

Day 6 : Trekking

The Parvati Valley is one of the most picturesque places in the Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh. Two days is all you need to explore its magnificent landscape and get refreshed from within. The Kasol to Kheerganga trek is an invigorating journey, which not only unveils the stunning terrain of the Himalayas, but also gives you a chance to learn about the interesting culture of the people living here. You will visit plenty of villages, and there will be infinite opportunities for you to click pictures with the snow-capped peaks in the background. We begin this Kheerganga trek from Kasol, which is among the most famous hill stations in the Pin Parvati Valley. From here, you will be taken to the hamlet of Barshaini to begin the on-foot journey. The 12-km trail from here provides you with ample opportunities to explore the natural bounties of the region. On the way, you will find numerous charming waterfalls that will convince you with their allure to take a picture. One sight of the astonishing serpent-shaped waterfall of Rudra Nag will give you a new perspective on nature. These splendid waterfalls are among the highlights of the Kheerganga trek. All your tiredness of the hike will be washed away with a sight of the mystical hot springs of Kheerganga. You can step in it to tackle the cool weather. The one-of-a-kind experience of relaxing in a hot spring while admiring vistas of snow-capped peaks will remain with you forever as memories. The vistas from an altitude of about 13000 feet will also leave you spellbound. The trek is graded easy; therefore, almost anybody can undertake it with a little bit of preparation. At early evening down trek to Kasol and then drive to Chandigarh on same night.

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary – How to Plan Your Journey

shimla manali trip itinerary

Continuing from the previous two articles where I talked about how you can plan a trip to Shimla and Manali separately; in this article, I will talk about a Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary covering both the places in the same trip. I will first draft an itinerary that I recommend, followed by a few other variations. If you wanted to draft your own plan and had questions, you may ask them in the comments section towards the end of this page.

Together, Shimla and Manali are probably the most visited towns in all of Himachal and make up for a perfect family holiday. There are several reasons behind this, like safety and connectivity. But the biggest reason in my opinion is that Shimla and Manali have something to offer for everyone.

It does not matter if you are planning a quick outing with your friends or a proper vacation with your family; you know that heading towards either of these places will not end in disappointment. How can you plan your itinerary for Shimla and Manali is what I will be discussing in this article.

If you have about 7 to 8 days, you can easily explore both Shimla and Manali in a relaxed manner without rushing on any day. For the sake of this article, I will assume that you are traveling from Delhi. If you were however traveling from a different place, only the plan for first and last day will change. The rest of the itinerary will still remain the same.

Quick Navigation

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary

I will suggest an itinerary according to 9 days of travel which will include two weekends and one entire week. It will be starting on a Saturday and ending on Sunday of the next week. If you were short on time then you can easily take days out from this itinerary.

  • Delhi to Shimla: Day 1
  • Sightseeing in Shimla: Day 2
  • Sightseeing in Shimla: Day 3
  • Shimla to Manali: Day 4
  • Manali: Day 5
  • Manali to Keylong: Day 6
  • Keylong to Manali: Day 7
  • Manali: Day 8
  • Manali to Delhi: Day 9

A more detailed explanation of this itinerary is as mentioned below where I have explained what all places you can cover during your stay in Shimla and Manali.

I have kept only 2 days of stay in Shimla because, in my opinion, that is sufficient to cover the major tourist attractions here. Manali has slightly more to offer to tourists than Shimla does.

The plan above can be completed by both a private vehicle and public transport. Traveling by your own vehicle of course will be better and more convenient.

shimla manali trip itinerary

  • Delhi to Shimla – Day 1

Not much to talk about on this day except for a long journey. From Delhi, take NH1 and then take the road towards Shimla from Chandigarh via Himalayan Expressway. There is currently some road widening work going on between Chandigarh and Shimla so the entire journey can easily take up to 10-11 hours.

The total distance covered would be about 350 kilometers. There are regular HRTC buses from ISBT Delhi which you can board if you were traveling by public transport.

Another fun thing to do would be to reach Kalka by Bus and then board the famous Toy train to reach Shimla. For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip by Shimla Kala Toy Train .

Shimla – Day 2

Now there are multiple ways that you can spend Day 2 and 3. There are several places to see in Shimla of which,  Mall Road, Christ Church, Scandal Point, Jakhu Hill, Shimla State Museum are the most famous ones. Some of the nearby hill stations that are very scenic are Chail , Kufri, Mashobra , and Narkanda . For a complete list, please take a look at Places of Tourist Interest in Shimla .

If you were traveling by your own vehicle, I would recommend spending Day 2 in Shimla itself.  You can take a walk on The Ridge, the area near Jhaku Hill, and the Observatory. This is the place where Shimla’s fairs, festivals, and functions are held. Tourists come here to see several colonial-style buildings, a church, a library, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

You can also trek to Jhaku Hill, which at a height of 2,455 meters. It offers a mesmerizing view of Shimla and the entire Shivalik range around. It is a fun trek of about 30 minutes to the top through lush forest terrain. There is also a 108 feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman at top of Jhaku Hill.

shimla manali trip itinerary

Drive to Narkanda – Day 3

On Day 3, take a drive to the nearby town of Narkanda via Kufri. At Narkanda, drive all the way till Sutlej point and then have lunch there. After lunch, pay a short visit to Hatu Peak and then return to Shimla by evening. This entire drive is very scenic and definitely worth it. For more details, please take a look at What to See in Narkanda .

If you were traveling by public transport, my advice would be to spend these two days visiting places within Shimla city itself. Going to Narkanda by public transport and coming back to Shimla may be a bit of a hassle and to be honest, won’t be that much fun either.

Shimla to Manali – Day 4

Most of this day will be spent traveling from Manali to Shimla. You can take the route via Tattapani. The drive can be a bit long but is a scenic one and you will enjoy it.

Manali – Day 5

Spend this day in Manali itself. The first important thing you need to do is to get your permit for Rohtang Pass. This can take an entire day where you will first submit your documents in the first half of the day. You will then return to the DC office to collect the permit in the afternoon.

Another and easier way around this is to apply for the permit online. Please read How to get a Permit for Rohtang Pass for step by step details.

Apart from getting the permits, the rest of the day will be spent on local sightseeing and walking around in Manali. There are several places you can visit of which Hadimba Temple, Nehru Kund, Vashist Hot Water Springs, Museum Of Himachal Culture And Folk Art, Manu Maharishi Temple, Gauri Shankar Temple, Jagatipatt Temple, Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery are to name a few. For more details, please take a look at Places of Tourist Interest in Manali .

mall road manali

Manali to Keylong – Day 6

Today you will take the most scenic drive of your entire journey. Drive up to Rohtang Pass and then descend down on the other side into Lahaul valley. There are plenty of hotels in Keylong where you can spend the night. Or you can drive further 25 kilometers to Jispa and stay there at any of the campsites.

This part of the journey is highly recommended. People advising you for Manali will not add this to the itinerary but this actually is a must part of your trip. You will love the entire drive from Manali to Lahaul valley .

Keylong to Manali – Day 7

On this day, start early from Keylong and reach Jispa. Have breakfast there and from Jispa, climb up to see Baralacha La top , and drive all the way till Suraj Taal. From there, then backtrack to Jispa and Keylong and then return to Manali via Rohtang Pass.

Manali – Day 8

Last day of the trip before you return home to Delhi. There are 3 ways that you can spend this day. Either you can just relax in Manali and shop around a bit at Mall road. Or you can trek to Bhrigu Lake which a 6 kilometers hike from Gulaba. You can also plan a day visit to Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib.

An alternate way to plan this day is to go to Kasol in Parvati Valley and spend the day there.

Manali to Delhi – Day 9

Nothing to write about this day except that it will be a long journey home to Delhi via Chandigarh. Total distance covered will be about 550 kilometers so an early start from Manali is recommended.

Itinerary for Shimla and Manali

A few other ways that the journey can be planned are as mentioned below.

Itinerary 1

  • Shimla Local Sightseeing and Kufri – Day 2
  • Shimla to Manikaran to Manali – Day 3
  • Rohtang Pass – Day 4
  • Local Sightseeing in Manali – Day 5
  • Manali to Kullu to Delhi – Day 6

Itinerary 2

  • Local Sightseeing in Shimla – Day 2
  • Shimla to Narkana to Sarahan – Day 3
  • Sarahan to Kalpa – Day 4
  • Kalpa to Chitkul – Day 5
  • Chitkul to Shimla – Day 6
  • Shimla to Manali – Day 7
  • Manali Local Sightseeing – Day 8
  • Rohtang Pass – Day 9
  • Manali to Delhi – Day 10

Accommodation in Shimla and Manali

Shimla and Manali are very popular tourist destinations and always have people visiting here. Due to this, hotels in both these cities are ample in number in quite a wide range of budgets. You will easily be able to find cheap stays as well as luxurious hotels and resorts.

I personally do not prefer booking hotels in advance as I like to first arrive, check the place out and then negotiate an on the spot deal. It is however more of a personal choice. In peak tourist season, it is definitely an added benefit and peace of mind if you have your accommodation booked and confirmed.

Winter Trip to Shimla and Manali

If you were visiting Shimla and Manali in winter, you can still follow this itinerary with an exception of Lahaul valley. That part cannot be explored as Rohtang pass remains closed between November and April. In that case, you can use these two days to explore more areas like Manikaran Sahib or nearby places like Parvati Valley .

In peak winters, it can snow heavily at both Shimla and Manali in which case, I will recommend that you be careful while driving around. If possible, hire a local taxi here who can take you for sightseeing safely.

You will also have to be careful while packing clothes. Pack a few pairs of thermals and pack all your heavy woolens. Do keep in mind though that there is a huge tourist rush here around Christmas and new year.

snowfall in manali

Road Conditions in Shimla and Manali

The road between Delhi to Shimla and Manali to Delhi is a mix of good and average. There are some bad sections in between but it is mostly a smooth run.

So is the road at most of the other places with an exception of the stretch at Rohtang Pass. The road towards the top of the pass and then at some places towards Lahaul valley can get a little bad. In monsoon, there is also a lot of slushes here and if it rained too much it can also cause landslides in between.

Another bad section of the road is towards Manikaran Sahib. Between Shimla and Manali, the road via Tattapani is about average, a mix of good and bad. The annoying part of the journey will however be the long line of trucks traveling between Mandi and Chandigarh.

Clothes for Shimla and Manali

For a summer visit, your regular cotton clothes will do but you may want to pack a jacket as well if you kept Lahaul valley as part of your itinerary. During monsoon season, make sure you are carrying proper rain gear along with your cottons. For winter trips, your heavy woolens, thermals, gloves, and jackets are a must.

Shimla and Manali Trip

Final question is, why to visit Shimla and Manali at all. There are numerous other hill stations in Himachal and Uttarakhand that you can go to so why these two places? The answer to this question is actually in the form of three major reasons.

The first one is that both these places are very well connected to all nearby cities. Road connectivity remains open throughout the year and you can either drive on your own or catch an overnight bus.

The second reason is in terms of safety. When you are out vacationing with family, you cannot really afford to go completely remote; places where no one goes. You would rather visit destinations that are filled with tourists so you can have fun as well as peace of mind. Shimla and Manali both are perfect destinations in this aspect.

The third reason is of availability of facilities like accommodation, phone reception, data connectivity; public transport, taxis, eateries, etc, and both these places again come out as winners here as well.

Shimla Manali Trip Itinerary – Conclusion

I hope the information above was of help. If you have any other questions; or need any further details; please feel free to ask in the comments section below; or at our Community forum ; and I will be glad to answer. If you have visited Shimla and Manali and have a few other tips that can be added to the article above, please be so kind to mention it in comments and I will add to the post.

Both routes are scenic. Although the jalori pass will be closed if you have to go to tirthan valley in the winter from Shimla.

Kasol Tour

trip to shimla manali kasol

High in the Himalayas - Manali, Kasol, Tosh & Malana

Photo of Dharmesh Patel

A little background about the ones who made the trip happen:

The three of us stay in Pune. We had been planning this tip for a long time. After a lot of discussions, in January we finally booked the tickets to avoid last minute heavy flight costs. After too much of back and forth, the three of us finally packed our bags and set out on a journey to move close to the abode of Lord Shiva, The Himalayas.

Here is the rough itinerary that we had in our mind (we did not focus on the details and had decided to figure things out on the move).

Pune - Delhi - Manali (Old Manali) - Kasol - KheerGanaga/Tosh - Kasol - Malana - Delhi - Pune

We reached Delhi at 10:00 PM and had realized it before that we would not be able to start our journey the same night as the last bus to Manali leaves from Delhi at 10:45. Hence we had to crash with our friends in Delhi itself for the first night and take a bus to Manali the next day.

1. Day/Night 1 Delhi - Manalij

The most recommended bus for the trip is the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Volvo which can be booked online. Since we had not planned this in advanced, we booked a regular Volvo through RedBus. The boarding point in Delhi usually is either ISBT or Majnu Ka Tila. Both the stops are easily accessible through the Metro.

Traveler Tip: Try and book the HPTC Volvo and avoid the local volvo's as they do not leave as per the scheduled time. Nonetheless, both are safe and comfortable and would cost you anywhere between 900-1300 Rs.

Our bus started off a little late. As a matter of fact, we were moved to another bus due to poor coordination among the bus vendors. We started off from Delhi at around 9 PM and reached Manali at 10 AM in the morning. The bus pit stops twice on the way for dinner and morning refreshements.

2. Day/Night 2 Manali - Old Manali

We got down at the Manali Volvo Bus stop and took a taxi to Old Manali. It took us 200 Rs to reach from Manali to Old Manali.

Stay: Paradise Guest House, Old Manali (Near Dragon)

Cost of Stay: Rs 650 per room per night

We parked our selves at the Paradise Guest house. Refreshed ourselves and set out to explore Manali on foot. Since it was off season, most of the shops were either under renovation or closed. We picked up a couple of beers and sat by the river to relax for some time. Just by the river, there is a small park (that is what it looked like) kind of a place covered with long dense trees. We crossed the bridge connecting Old Manali and New Manali and set out to take a walk between the trees. The result was a 30 minute walk almost in a jungle kind of a place with the end road opening to Manali Bazaar.

Traveler Tip: It usually rains in Manali (in fact in Himalayas) till end of March and it is a good idea to carry a windsheeter.

The most amazing thing about the Himalayas, apart from the nature and the things that get you high, is the food. You can walk into any local restaurants and order Parathas or anything and the taste is supposed to aww you. We stuck to Parathas as that is something we do not get very commonly at our side of the world.

Food Cost: A meal should not cost you more than 80-100 Rs.

Post having lunch, we took an Auto to take us back to our guest house and it costed about 80 Rs (Yes, the transportation cost is really low here).

Things to try: Apple pie: You can head to any of the local bakeries and try the apple pie which would cost around 80 Rs per pie. You get real apple pie here and the taste is sure to satisfy your. sweet buds.

Hangout Spots: In the evening we went to Drifters Inn Cafe for food and drinks before getting back home and crashing. A bud wiser here will cost you 280 and a pizza anywhere between 200 to 240 based on the toppings you choose. You can spend hours and hours in this cafe sipping beer, smoking, playing games, chatting up with friends and time will just pass by. Time kind of stopped in the Himalayas and the temperature went as low as -3 C.

3. Day/Night 3 Manali - Kasol

We got up at around 8 AM and after enquiring a little bit with Mr. Pyarelal, set out to sight see Manali on foot. A little bit of googling will help you know all the tourist spots to go to in Manali . We did not want to cover everything and were more interesting in seeing Old Manali and the culture the locals follow. After walking a little bit, we set out on a path parallel to the river Vyas (look at the pictures). We did try a little bit of adventure by trying to cross the river through an unusual way, but it did not really work out. The water is so cold that you can't keep your foot in for more than 5 seconds. We ended up spending hours sitting by the river.

Must Read: hadimba temple , manikaran sahib ,  paragliding in manali

After talking to another local we found out that there has been a snowfall at Gulaba a place about 35-40 kms from Manali. We called up a taxi driver and negotiated a package to take us to Gulaba, bring us back to Manali and take us to Kasol the same night. It costed us 2800 Rs for the entire trip.

To enjoy playing in the snow, you need to collect snow gear at any of the government approved shops on the way. The entire body gear will cost you around 250 Rs and needs to be returned on you way back.

None of us had been in the snow before and its an experience in itself. We spent hours climbing and playing in the snow before heading back to Manali and setting out for Karol.

On the way to Kasol, had dinner at Great Punjab Dhaba. Their parathas are to die for.

We reached Kasol at around 9 PM and it was raining there. It was kind of though to find a place to crash as the guest house that we wanted to crash at, Alpine Guest House, was completely full and we settled for a guest house next to Alpine. It costed us 1000 Rs per night.

4. Day/Night 4 - Tosh

Getting there: Tosh is a small village about 50 kms away from Kasol. To reach Tosh, you need to take the local state bus from the bus stop and get down at Barsheni, the last stop. From Barsheni , you can either take a cab to Tosh, which will cost you 300 Rs or take the unusual walking route which the locals take.

Travelers Tip: Taking the walking route to tosh by climbing up the mountain is not for the faint hearted. It is a 1 hour trek. On the way you will find no human beings, no food and nothing to drink. So in case you plan to climb up, please stuff yourself first at one of local restaurants. Sticking to our eating plans, we had paranthas at Prem Cafe and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Barsheni or Tosh.

After about an hour of climbing, we finally reached Tosh and were greeted just right by the villagers. We had reach Tosh on Mahashivratri and there could not have been a better day or night to visit this place. We were given the local prasad which is defined to get you high. After walking a little bit inside we closed on a place to crash at.

Stay: Boom Shiva Resort

Cost of Stay: 300 Per Room per night

Boom Shiva has the best view to offer in Tosh. You can see the entire Parvati valley up close from its outdoors and has the peace that one comes to Himalayas for. There is not much to do in Tosh and most of the places where you get food closes at around 8 PM. We crashed in early and got up at around 8 AM before heading back to Kasol.

5. Day/Night 5 - Kasol

On our way back to Kasol we got down at Manikar Sahib Gurudwara to pray and have the langar. On reaching Kasol we managed to find a place at Alpine Guest House, which is built right next to the Parvati river.

Stay: Alpine Guest House

Cost of Stay: 1000 Per Room per night

We ended up spending the entire evening at Alpine itself. Its nice, quite, sere and peaceful.

Places to Eat: Tushar Cafe (Amazing Parathas)

6 . Day/Night 6 - Malana

Getting there: Getting to Malana on foot directly is not possible. But the irony is that the only way you can reach there is on foot. You need to take a bus from Kasol and get down at Jari. From Jari you can take a private taxi which will cost you about 1300 Rs for a return trip. The driver will take you to a spot from where the trek to Malana starts. You will have a total of 3 hours to go to Malana and come back. Every extra hour of stay for the driver will cost you Rs 100.

Cost of Stay: We did not stay at Malana for a lot of reasons and the biggest reason was the hostility of the village. But on an average it should cost you between 1000 to 1500 per night.

Trip Overview: The trip to Malana is not for the faint hearted. I will not get into the background of the village as there is already so much that you can get to know just by typing Malana in the google search bar. The drive from Jari to Malana (trek starting point) is in itself an adventure. The road is built for the Malana Power Plan project and is not really a very driver friendly road. Most of the times you would be driving next to a cliff and a small mistake can take you to heaven. The drive took us about 1 hour from where we started trekking to Malana. You need to first go downhill and then uphill. The uphill part is when everything gets interesting. You are trekking mostly next to cliffs and only one person can cross at a time. The whole trek took us about 1 hour.

We had heard so much about Malana. We wanted to unfold all the mysteries. Everyone in the village were quite hostile. They will not talk to you, forget about answering your questions (I am assuming that they get a lot of visitors like us). But in totality, Malana is quite hyped up and happens to be just another village with their own rituals and culture. We did not care to spend much time there and returned back in just about an hour. But for the ones who are still curious as to what the village is all about, here are a few quick pointers:

1. You will find smokers and smoking points both on the way and in the village. You will get everything for cheap compared to any other place in the valley.

2. There are certain holy places that you cannot touch and the whole thing about not touching the locals did not happen with us. We interacted with one local and took pictures with his son and it was absolutely all right.

3. Do not smoke and think about trekking back. The trek is a little dangerous and can cause you your life.

4. Spending a night here is not advisable unless you have come with the sole purpose of smoking.

5. The villagers look very different from everyone else we saw in the valley throughout our trip. They speak a different language as well but do understand Hindi so you can stick to Hindi while interacting with them.

Places to Eat: We ate our lunch at one of the local shops. Some chai samosa. That is all.

We trekked back to the point where our taxi driver was waiting for us and headed back to Jari. From Jari we took a bus to Bhuntar which is the central point for taking buses to Delhi, Dharamshala etc. We headed to Dharamshala from here but just ended up relaxing in McLeoudGanj and hence I do not want to add much here about it.

Trip Summary: They are right when they say the valley is smokers paradise. Its one of the most serene places I have ever visited in my life. People are very friendly and will go out of their way to help you out. Most of the tourists visit the valley between May-July and that is when everything gets expensive and crowded. I would recommend taking a trip between January and March to satisfy your travel buds.

Take a bus from Majnu Ka Tila

Stay at the paradise guest house

Stay at Alpine Guest House

Stay at Boom Shiva Cafe

Trek to Malana and come back. I personally do recommend anyone to stay there. Very hostile people.

Take the bus back from here.
