The Best Apple Orchard Field Trip Ideas for Kids and Families

Visit a pick-your-own apple orchard this fall! Use these handy tips and plan to take your entire family or classroom apple picking this harvest. Apples are typically ripe for picking from Mid-June to Mid-November, depending on the variety of apples. The most common types are just beginning to ripen at this time of year.

How to Find an Apple Orchard Near You

Organic apple orchards are recommended but harder to find. Check your local newspaper or a family resource guide, or do a Google search for a “Pick Your Own” apple farm near you!

Call the apple orchard Before your visit to ask Questions:

  • When are the best times to visit with the smallest crowds?
  • Ask if the branches are low enough for small children to pick. Odds are you won’t want to be holding your child up all day or hauling a ladder around with you.
  • Do they have wagons available, or if they allow you to bring your own?
  • Is there food available for purchase, or do they have a place to sit and eat if you bring a picnic?

Adventures with Twins, Cystic Fibrosis + a Food Allergy

Apple Farm Field Trip and Learning Activities for Elementary Schoolers

Apple Farm Field Trip and Learning Activities for Elementary Schoolers

Apple picking season is upon us! We headed to nearby Vulcan Apple Farm in Julian CA early in the morning for some homeschool U-Pick awesomeness, Covid style.

Apple picking is a yearly expedition for us. We’ve gone every year with our twins since they were old enough to strap into a Baby Bjorn. Over the years we’ve learned some tips – these are the best ones: Apple Farm Field Trip Tips .

This year I was a little nervous though. With my Cystic Fibrosis we have been very isolated at home and hesitant to go most places. I know everyone feels different about this, but personally with inconsistent mask wearing in San Diego I don’t feel comfortable venturing out a lot. Apple picking seemed like a naturally distant activity though so I decided to give it a try.

However, if you don’t feel comfortable venturing to your area farm or you don’t have one close enough, this Apple Orchard post from The Educator’s Spin On It has a great collection of virtual field trip experiences related to Apple Farms.

Field Trip Prep

The night before I prepped for our Apple Farm field trip. I packed and prepped:

  • Snacks for the car and for a small picnic.
  • Cash (needed to purchase some things at the farm)
  • Loaded a new audiobook for the kids to listen to on the ride (we listened to The One and Only Ivan )
  • Made sure we had face masks for each of us (required by the farm!)
  • Sunscreen ( this has been my favorite for a while now!)
  • Made sure the car had gas

Visiting Vulcan Apple Farm in Julian CA during Covid19 - Bambini Travel

Apple Picking Vulcan Apple Farm in Julian CA

Vulcan Apple farm is located in Julian CA about an hour from San Diego. There are quite a few farms in Julian, but Vulcan is one of the biggest and had taken precautions for Covid19 this year.

We visited Vulcan Apple farm last year as well and it was largely the same experience. The main difference is that face masks are required for visiting to pick apples right now. I hope they are good about enforcing this so people like me can continue to feel comfortable enjoying apple season.

apple picking in julian ca . bambini travel

When we visited it was early in the morning on a Friday. There were definitely people there but nothing like we’ve seen on the weekends in previous years. If you’re worried about social distancing then I highly recommend a weekday morning. Heading into the farm, the line was spaced out, everyone was wearing a mask, and the attendants taking money avoiding any contact.

Vulcan Apple Farm has plenty of apples in several different varieties. We had zero problems filling our apple bags.

After we were done picking apples, we bought apple cider from their stand (cash only!) which was cold and delicious. We drank it and ate a snack at one of the picnic tables. Because there were so few people this again was easy to do while maintaining plenty of distance. If it were busier we would have brought the cider back to the car.

Then we headed home, via Julian Pie Co , with all of our apples.

Every year our preschool program looks forward to the educational fun we enjoy at All Seasons Orchard. In addition, our tour coordinators have been wonderful!

Kelly W. | Alexander Leigh Center for Autism

One of the goals at Alexander Leigh Center for Autism is to create experiences for our students that allow them to enter into the community to practice their skills and have some good old kid fun. The staff at All Seasons Orchard were accepting of the special needs of our students and made sure that they felt welcomed. The kids had a blast! We are grateful for the partnership we have built with All Seasons and we look forward to this season.

Jess N. | Senior Citizen Center

Took a senior group to this wonderful location and it was such a great experience. The All Seasons Orchard staff was so accommodating, friendly, and really went the extra mile for us! Cost package was great but not nearly as great as the memories made with the residents! Parking was easy and bus transfer was quick and close to the entrance. We will visit again with a larger group!

Oak Glen’s Apple Picking Season officially kicks off over Labor Day weekend and runs now through Thanksgiving weekend.   The apple crop is good this year and the majority of farms officially start welcoming visitors in September.

The History of Oak Glen

Oak Glen’s apple orchards produce a variety of apple selections including the Vasquez and King David varieties, which are grown only in Oak Glen, as well as antique varieties no longer commercially available such as Ben Davis, Gravenstein and Pink Pearl.  Before 1940, Oak Glen mainly grew apples for export purposes.  Then several farmers got together and began to sell apples, apple pies, apple cider and apple butter at roadside stands to locals passing by.  Today growers earn the majority of their profit from visitors who pick apples directly off their trees in the orchards.

Apple Farms in Oak Glen

Riley’s farm.

My family and I have visited Oak Glen on more than one occasion.  One of our favorite spots in town is  Riley’s Farm .  Nestled in the apple growing foothills of historic Oak Glen, Riley’s Farm is a working apple orchard and living history farm featuring pick-your-own fruit, living history education, dinner theater, group banquet facilities and extended and historically-themed overnight stays.

They also offer year round educational field trips for schools and homeschool groups.

Did you know that there are three additional apple farms in Oak Glen that are owned and operated by different members of the Riley family?

Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho

Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho   features apple-wood smoked BBQ dishes and a bakery with homemade pies, hand-held pies, turnovers and cookies.  Picnic grounds, a petting zoo, nature trails are also on the property.  During apple season, they are open 7 days/week from 9 am – 5 pm.

Riley’s Apple Farm

Riley’s Apple Farm  is currently celebrating 35 years of apple growing where families are entertained with old fashioned harvest fun!  Their apple picking season runs Labor Day thru Thanksgiving Weekend.  On the weekends they are open 10 am – 4 pm and weekdays by reservations only.

Riley’s Apple Farm offers Home School Days in the fall.  During a tour, students will enjoy a hands-on living history tour of the farm from 10 am – 2 pm.  Advance reservations are required.  Check in time is 9:00 am.  Lunch packages are available as well for a small cost.

Riley’s Stone Soup Farm & Heritage Orchard

Riley’s Stone Soup Farm & Heritage Orchard  is a century old, family owned and operated vintage apple orchard.  Every year they enjoy the return of visitors to their working farm on a country outing, looking for u-pick fruit and many fun family activities.  They engage in preserving a heritage community through heirloom growing, educational programs and artisan culture.  Operating hours on weekends are from 10 am – 4 pm and during the week by reservation only.

Riley’s Stone Soup Farm & Heritage Orchard hosts a  Homeschool Day in the fall where visitors discover   what life was really like by working and living on a late 19th century farm.  Enjoy the daily adventures of a homesteading family, learning from their skills and crafts in this interactive tour.

The Homeschool Program includes pioneer cooking, apple tasting, candle dipping, wool carding & farm chores, cider pressing, historical toy making & games and a visit to the corn & pumpkin patch.  Advance reservations are accepted online.

More Apple Farms in Oak Glen

In addition to the Riley family chain of farms, there are several other smaller farms in Oak Glen that are open for apple picking including:

Willowbrook Apple Farm

The Swanson family invites you to visit Willowbrook Apple Farm and enjoy a day apple picking in the country at their small family farm.   A mere hour’s drive from Los Angeles and Orange County transports you to babbling brooks, fresh air and a 100 year old apple orchard.

Law’s Apple Shed & Cider Mill

Law’s Apple Shed & Cider Mill has over 35 varieties of local home-grown apples and cider.  The mill is home to Oak Glen’s smallest stand and finest quality apples.

Wood Acres is Oak Glen’s best-kept secret.  The farm is a quiet retreat tucked in a verdant canyon below the main drag and home to 28 varieties of apples.

Snow-Line Orchard

Snow-Line Orchard has an original packing shed, historic cider mill, ancient chestnut tree and beautiful picnic grounds.  They carry a broad selection of products including fresh apples and cider, u-pick raspberries, cider mini donuts, artisan balsamics and oils, local honey, unique gifts, and farm made wine and hard cider.   Snow Line Apple Orchard is also home to the oldest Chestnut tree west of the Mississippi.

Parrish Pioneer Ranch

In 1866, Enoch Kidder Parrish arrived in Oak Glen and traded four mules and a wagon for 160 acres of land.  By 1867 he had planted the first full-scale orchard in Oak Glen, just over an acre of mainly Rome Beauty trees.  Apples from this historic orchard are on sale in the main barn each fall along with cider, apple butter, jams, jellies and syrups.

Parrish Ranch is also home to a variety of wildlife and local farm animals.  They have pygmy goats, alpacas, a miniature donkey named Miss Covergirl and her best friend, Cinderella the miniature horse.  In addition to the livestock there are emu, a variety of chickens, turkeys, and peafowl.

Top 5 Tips For Apple Picking in Oak Glen

  • The best time to go apple picking is during the week when the farms are not as crowded.
  • The weather up on the mountain is unpredictable at times.  I recommend that you bring a hat, sunscreen and a jacket for all scenarios.
  • Bring your own reusable bags for apple picking.
  • There are a few public parks in the area where you can have a picnic.
  • Purchase a few homemade apple pies to take home with you for Thanksgiving.  They freeze well!

Carrie Kleckner

Thursday 25th of July 2019

I’ve been to all of the farms since I live near there & I know I haven’t experience everything there is in Oak Glen yet! It is a beautiful place to explore for sure! One piece of advice I have is that some farms only have pippin apples to pick & those apples are only good for baking. My experience at Los Rio Rancho was only Pippins available to pick. Make sure you ask what apples you are picking & see if that fits your need.

Thanks for the tips!

Morning Glory Orchard

Field Trips!

apple picking field trip

Give the kids a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit a real working orchard and learn all about apple farming!

Plan a Field Trip!

During the Fall, Morning Glory Orchard hosts thousands of school-aged children for field trips. We provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a working apple orchard. The children get both an inside and outside tour. During the outside portion they get to see small baby trees less than a few years old, all the way up to 43 year old trees. We talk about bees and how essential they are in an orchard for pollination.  The kids love walking through the orchard and seeing the apples which vary in size and color. Depending on the date of the tour, the children will get to pick an apple themselves--something they won't soon forget! During the inside portion, we show the children how an apple press works, we let them taste fresh cider along with the honey collected from our beehives. There might even be mention of Johnny Appleseed.  Afterward, you are welcome to picnic in the designated area and enjoy the beauty of the land.

New for 2023, we are offering field trips the entire month of September and the first 2 weeks of October. Additionally, due to popular request, we are adding the opportunity for smaller groups and families to take part in homeschool days/fall break staycation tours! Click on pricing below for more info.

Field Trip Pricing

We recognize that families and small groups want to take part in our amazing field trip program. Unfortunately, due to the labor required and the time necessary to setup/cleanup, it is not feasible for us to host a field trip with less than 25 people. If your group is smaller than this, we recommend reserving a spot for one of our popular Taste and Tour Events or you can also reserve your spot for our Homeschool/ Fall Break Field Trips. Price is $10/per person for 2023. Taste & Tour Events

Homeschool Days

Our field trip is one hour in length and costs $10 per person. Each paid entry takes a goodie bag home with them. All children, parent chaperones and siblings in attendance are required to pay for admission. Accredited teachers by the state of Tennessee are always complimentary.

Reservations are required, your field trip is not confirmed until you receive an email from us with confirmation details. We typically respond to all requests within a week so if you have not heard from us, please call (615) 395-4088.

Things To Know!

1. We are a working farm. There is dirt, mud and uneven ground. Please watch your step!

2. Bees and other insects are present! We need them to keep our trees producing fruit. We will always take care to not get the children close to the beehives, but bees cannot be contained to a specific area. The best rule of thumb is to not make sudden movements and to remember that they are much more scared of us.

3. Watch the Weather. We can't control the weather any more than the meteorologist can predict it! While we will not go out if there is lightning present, a light rain doesn't bother us. So have the kids bring a rain jacket and we will continue your tour even in a light rain. We will make every effort to reschedule your tour if there is lightning and your tour must be canceled.

4. Respect the Apples & Orchard. The apples that come off the tree do not look like the apples that have been gassed and waxed at the grocery store. There will be dirt on them. Please do not allow children to throw them on the ground in order to pick another piece of fruit. This is our business and the way we earn a living and we want all of the kids on our school tours to be able to have the opportunity to pick.

260+ Field Trip Ideas for Grades Pre-K Through 12 (In-Person and Virtual)

Get out of the classroom and explore the world!

Students on field trips to the local theater and a fire station.

Field trips are a quintessential school experience. You usually only get one or two a year so it’s important to do it right! Our roundups of unique field trip ideas have something for every age, subject, and interest. We’ve even got resources like permission slip forms and chaperone tips. Get ready to leave the classroom behind to take learning on the road!

Preschool Field Trip Ideas

Preschooler wearing a fire helmet and standing in front of a fire truck (Field Trip Ideas)

Early-grade field trips help kids learn about the world and also teach them good field trip behavior. These are our top picks for the pre-K crowd, but many of the options on our kindergarten list are perfect for this age group too.

  • Library: Not every student’s parents take them to story time. Schedule your own trip, and show kids that having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card!
  • Farm: Whether you learn how vegetables are grown or where milk and eggs come from, the farm is always a hit.
  • Grocery store: Go behind the scenes at the supermarket, and use this trip as the foundation for lessons on healthy eating.
  • Park: From local playgrounds to majestic national parks, it’s always worth getting kids into the great outdoors.
  • Children’s museum: This is the age group most children’s museums were designed for! They’ll love all the hands-on fun and excitement.
  • Post office: Learn how mail is sorted and shipped, and teach students about stamps and other mail-related items.
  • Bank: Money is a new concept for these kiddos, and they’ll be fascinated to step inside the vault and learn other bank secrets.
  • Fire station: There’s just something about a fire truck that gets every little one excited.
  • Nursing home: Is there anything sweeter than watching seniors and wee ones spend time together?
  • Animal shelter: For kids who don’t have pets at home, this can be a good introduction to animals. Others will just enjoy the time with dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes.

Middle and High School Field Trip Ideas

Middle school students on a field trip to a water reclamation facility

@salinasvalleybasingsa

For this age group, you’ll need to step up your game a bit. (They’ve probably already been to the zoo, the aquarium, and the art museum.) Try some of these locations, which offer educational, social-emotional, and real-life learning opportunities.

  • Food bank: Hold a food drive, then arrange a trip to your local soup kitchen or food pantry. Volunteering makes for truly meaningful field trips.
  • Recycling facility: In a time when reducing landfill waste is more important than ever, a trip to a recycling facility can help drive home the message.
  • Theater: Many theaters offer behind-the-scenes tours for schools and discount pricing when you buy tickets in bulk. (Want to go virtual? Check out the Hamilton Education Program !)
  • Community college: Parents sometimes take kids on college visits, but a community college trip offers opportunities for even more students to see themselves getting a higher education.
  • TV station: Kids interested in communications or technology will find this completely fascinating.
  • Courtroom: There’s no better way to understand the justice system than to see it in action.
  • State or county capitol: Every government class should visit a local capitol to meet with officials and see how the government works.
  • Local business: This can be a cool way to learn about managing a business, working with customers, or discovering how products are made.
  • Wildlife rehab facility: Introduce students to the people who help injured wild animals recover and live free once again.

American journalist Evan Gershkovich to stand trial on espionage charges in Russia

Russian prosecutors announced on Thursday that they have finalized an indictment against jailed American journalist Evan Gershkovich, and said he will stand trial on espionage charges in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, where he was arrested more than a year ago .

Gershkovich, 32, was arrested while on a reporting trip for The Wall Street Journal in late March 2023 and is accused of spying for the United States. Gershkovich has vehemently denied the allegations against him — as has the Journal — and President Biden has called his detention " totally illegal ." The U.S. government has designated Gershkovich "wrongfully detained," meaning the government effectively considers him a political prisoner.

Russian authorities allege that Gershkovich used covert methods to gather information about the Uralvagonzavod factory outside the Ural mountain town of Yekaterinburg — a facility that has been sanctioned by the West and plays a significant role building tanks and other weapons for Russia in its war against Ukraine.

In a statement posted to Telegram, Russia's Prosecutor General's office alleged that Gershkovich had "collected secret information" under "instructions from the CIA." But prosecutors have not publicly presented any information or evidence to support their claims, and at the time of his arrest, Gershkovich had been accredited to work in Russia by the country's foreign ministry.

Prosecutors did not say when the proceedings against Gershkovich would begin, but once they do, he faces the prospect of a trial behind closed doors given that Russian officials say the case involves classified information. If found guilty, he could serve as much as 20 years in prison.

Gershkovich is currently being held in pretrial detention at Lefortovo prison in Moscow, where according to the Journal he has been confined 23 hours a day to his cell, leaving only for meetings with his attorneys or U.S. embassy officials, and for occasional court appearances.
