Zakynthos Greece Travel Guide & How To Visit

The island of Zakynthos in Greece has become famous for its picturesque shipwreck beach , but there are also lots of other things to do and see on this scenic island in the Ionian Sea.

Zakynthos features steep limestone cliffs, white pebble beaches, and some of the bluest water you’ll ever see in your life. You can explore the sights on this island by boat or by land, and it’s relatively easy to get to Zakynthos from Athens.

To be fair, this island has become a very popular summer destination in Greece nowadays, so you won’t escape the tourists, but it’s still worth a visit for the bucket list sights and photo ops.

This travel blog will explain what to do in Zakynthos, how to get there, where to stay, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Best Zakynthos Tour Packages

The coastline of Zakynthos is full of sea caves, beaches, and other wonderful sights that can only be seen with a boat tour.

We recommend GetYourGuide for boat tours in Zakynthos! They have high rated tours for all of the best sights like Navagio Beach , Blue Caves, Turtle Island, and more. These tours usually include free hotel pickup and drop-off from most of the popular areas in Zakynthos.

We’ve used this company for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great! Highly recommended.

Where Is Zakynthos Island?

Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is an island located in the Ionian Sea, west of mainland Greece. The distance from Athens to Zakynthos is only about 240 kilometers (150 miles) as the plane flies.

There are a total of seven Ionian Islands in Greece, and Zakynthos is the most famous of these, but the other nearby islands like Kefalonia are also very scenic and worth a visit if you have time.

How To Get To Zakynthos Greece

Zakynthos island can be reached by flight or ferry.

Flying to Zakynthos is the easiest, fastest, and most expensive (but recommended) way to get there. The Zakynthos airport (ZTH) is served by daily nonstop flights from Athens, as well as some international cities like Amsterdam, Rome, and Warsaw.

The flight time to Zakynthos from Athens is 1 hour, and it costs anywhere from 50 to 100 Euros for a one way ticket with Aegean/Olympic Air or Sky Express.

The best airline to use is Aegean (or its subsidiary Olympic Air) instead of Sky Express if you have a choice, but any of them are fine. Free checked baggage is usually included in the ticket prices.

Taking the ferry to Zakynthos from Athens is cheaper than flying, but it’s slower and a bit more complicated.

You first have to take a 4 hour bus ride from Athens to Kyllini (which costs 25 Euros), and then hop on the ferry there. The boat ride from Kyllini to Zakynthos takes around 1 hour and costs about 12 Euros.

If you’re interested in doing some island hopping in Greece and you want to see more than just Zakynthos, you can also mix up the itinerary a bit.

For example, you can fly into Zakynthos for a few days, take the ferry to Kefalonia , and then fly from Kefalonia back to Athens. That’s what we did, and it worked out great!

Transport: How To Get Around On Zakynthos Island

Zakynthos town proper is small enough to be walkable by foot for restaurants and most other things, but if you want to do some exploring outside of town you’ll need transport.

The main way to get around on Zakynthos island is by renting a car or ATV (4 wheeler). There are many companies offering car rentals on the island, but we recommend DiscoverCars !

There’s also an affordable bus service offered by KTEL Zakynthos , although keep in mind some of the bus routes are seasonal (summer only). Their website has a full list of prices and routes on the island.

For short distance trips near town, you can walk to beaches, shops, and such places. There’s no Uber, but you can hire a taxi or book an airport transfer .

The limestone cliffs of Zakinthos island

Driving in Zakynthos is a little stressful, but not too hard, and most of the roads are in good condition. The west side of the island is more mountainous, so you’ll occasionally have steep roads with plenty of bends, but these are usually well paved.

A few remote roads on the west side of the island may still be gravel with occasional potholes, but even those roads are quickly improving as the island becomes more accessible and popular with travelers.

The main difficulty is driving in Zante town, where there’s more traffic and the roads are narrow, with lots of cars parked on both sides. Drive slowly in town and stay alert. Once you get out of town, the roads are smooth sailing for the most part.

Greeks drive on the right side of the road, similar to the US and Canada. The locals like to drive fast, and they frequently ignore speed limits and pass on double yellow lines. Just be aware of this, and move over to let them pass.

The bluest water in the world!

Since the law was changed in 2021, foreign tourists from Australia, Canada, UK and the United States do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Greece anymore.

The actual text of the new law (in Greek language) can be found in Law 4850, art. 25, par. η, page 10697 , and it’s also been confirmed by the U.S. Embassy in Greece .

With that said, it still doesn’t hurt to have an IDP for Zakynthos in case there’s confusion from the authorities or your local car rental company. Many people in Greece still seem to be unaware of this change.

The coastline of Zakynthos is stunningly beautiful, and many of the best sights on the island are worth touring by boat. You can rent a boat or join a shared tour at one of the many harbors on the island, or you can book tour packages online that include free hotel pickup and drop-off.

What To Do In Zakynthos Greece

• navagio viewpoint.

This famous shipwreck beach is what first put Zakynthos island on so many travelers’ bucket lists. It’s probably one of the most famous travel pictures in the world!

Navagio is a beautiful secluded beach surrounded by turquoise water and dramatic, winding cliffs. In the center of the beach sits a smuggler ship that ran aground during stormy weather in 1980.

If you’re mainly wanting to see the iconic postcard view and take photos of it, you can do that from a viewpoint on the cliffs high above the beach.

Navagio Viewpoint

You can drive to the Navagio viewpoint yourself, or book a tour package that includes the viewpoint along with several other sights in Zakynthos.

Keep in mind, it’s not possible to reach the beach itself from the viewpoint. There’s no path to go down to the beach, because the cliffs are too steep. The only way to walk on the beach is with a boat tour, and that’s explained below in more detail.

However, the viewpoint is still one of the best sights in Zakynthos, so you should definitely add it to your itinerary!

• Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon

This is a small monastery that you’ll pass on the way to the Navagio viewpoint. In fact, it’s just a 5 minute drive from the viewpoint!

The Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon was founded in the 16th century, and it’s still a functioning monastery, with monks living and working there. Remember to dress appropriately if you want to go inside, although plenty of nice pictures can be taken from outside.

It’s free to visit the monastery, and they have a little workshop where they make mosaics and other art. You can buy their wares if you want, but they aren’t pushy about it. The mosaics are very nice.

Behind the monastery, there’s a walking path that takes you to a cross with wonderful views of the Ionian Sea, and it’s also a great sunset spot.

• Navagio Beach

Even though the best pictures of Navagio shipwreck are actually taken from the steep cliffs above, it’s also fun to get in a boat and go see the beach at eye level, if you’re willing to brave the crowds.

Boat tours to Navagio Beach generally depart from the nearby harbor at Porto Vromi. You can show up there and try to arrange a boat rental on the spot, but it’s generally better to book a tour package online .

This beach gets very crowded and chaotic during the daytime, when it’s bombarded with tourists and boats. During the summer, the only time you can avoid the crowds at Navagio Beach is by arriving before 8 AM or after 6 PM.

Nevertheless, it’s still a very nice beach and the rusty shipwreck is fun to see up close!

• Hidden Treasure Cave (Maravelia)

Out of all the many wonderful caves in Zakynthos island, this was one of our favorites.

The Maravelia Cave, also known as Hidden Treasure Cave, is located on the coast near the shipwreck beach, and you can only get there by boat.

In fact, the cave is only big enough for one small boat to fit inside it at a time, and only private boat tours go to this spot. Shared tours skip it.

Maravelia Hidden Treasure Cave

To go inside the cave, you’ll have to step directly off of your boat and climb up the smooth rocks that meet the water’s edge near the cave entrance.

The rocks can be slippery from sea water, so watch your step! Hidden Treasure Cave has a high ceiling with an opening at the top that pours in sunlight and makes the whole cave amazingly beautiful and photogenic.

It may not be famous just yet, but this was one of our favorite hidden spots in Zakinthos!

• Myzithres Rocks

This is one of the most spectacular and underrated places in Zakynthos, with dramatic white rocks and private beaches on both sides of the rock.

The Myzithres rocks are located on the southwest corner of Zakynthos island, and you can view them from the cliffs above, or take a boat directly to them from Keri Harbor and land on the beach!

There’s a viewpoint and a restaurant on the cliffs above, called Keri Lighthouse Restaurant. It’s a little overpriced, although the views are unbeatable. Afternoon until sunset is the best time to dine there and take pictures.

You can also walk further up the road and enjoy the view of Myzithres rocks without any people, but be careful not to get too close to the edge, because the cliff may be unstable.

• Marathonisi Island

Also known as ‘turtle island,’ Marathonisi is a small island near the south coast of Zakynthos. Part of the island is a protected breeding ground for loggerhead sea turtles.

The front side of this island has a nice beach with clear water, and the south side has a couple of caves you can enter with a small boat. It’s a fantastic island, but it’s becoming pretty crowded.

You can visit Marathonisi Island on a half day tour from Keri Harbor along with other sights such as the Keri Caves (below), or it’s also possible to take a boat taxi there from nearby places like Laganas Beach.

The Keri Caves are usually visited on a half day boat tour that includes Marathonisi Island (above) and sometimes the Myzithres Rocks.

Inside these caves, the water seems to glow blue, giving it a gatorade-like color that almost doesn’t look real. It’s hard to capture with a camera. Small boats can float into the caves see them up close.

There are also several pebble beaches and two rock arches on this coastline that your boat captain can drive through if he’s feeling adventurous!

Overall, the Keri Caves were one of our favorite places in southern Zakynthos.

• Blue Caves

This is a group of small caves on the northern tip of Zakynthos island, reachable by boat from Agios Nikolaos harbor.

As you might guess from the name, these are some of the most colorful caves in Zakynthos, and little boats can pass through the caves and come out the other side. Usually you can do some swimming here too, if there’s enough time.

The Blue Caves tour is generally shorter than any of the other boat tours in Zakynthos, but it’s also cheaper, so it’s well worth it!

• Plakaki Beach

This viewpoint is still kind of a hidden gem in Zakynthos, with amazing views of the coastline and that dark blue water the Mediterranean Sea is famous for.

Calling it a beach is kind of a stretch, but at the bottom of the cliff there’s a nice swimming spot that can be reached with a bit of short, intense hiking. The path is still unfinished rock, and there are some steep sections, so it’s not good for kids or older folks.

When the access improves, I’m sure this place will be one of the highlights of Zakynthos island. It definitely has some of our favorite views.

Plakaki Viewpoint Drone

Plakaki Beach — rocky access, but stunning views!

• Potamitis Viewpoint

Potamitis is another viewpoint with a nice restaurant, a windmill, and easy access by road. It’s located on the north end of Zakynthos island.

There’s a photogenic winding staircase that takes you down to the seaside, where you can watch the tour boats coming and going from the nearby Blue Caves. It’s a really nice view, and there are also sunbeds if you want to stay and relax.

We had heard that the restaurant asks you to buy something before taking pictures at the viewpoint, but in our case they didn’t ask for anything. The restaurant has good ratings too, so I’m sure it’s worth a visit!

• Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa

This is a medieval church that sits at the top of Skopos mountain in southeast Zante, at an elevation of 543 meters (1,782 ft). Surrounding the church are the ruins of a monastery that is even older. It’s like a trip back in time.

To reach the church you can drive or hike, but the road is rough gravel all the way to the top of the mountain. We made it there in a rental car, but it wasn’t a very comfortable drive. If you hike, bring a hat and lots of water.

If you drive, it’s best to come from the northeast side, because apparently the road from Kalamaki is worse and requires a 4×4 vehicle.

The atmosphere at the monastery is quiet and special. If you come in the daytime, they open the doors to the main building for visitors, and the inside has nice frescoes and a guestbook.

There’s a good breeze and you have panoramic views of much of Zakynthos island, with Kefalonia visible in the distance. I’m sure it’s a great spot for sunset too, although we didn’t stay that late.

Behind the monastery, there’s a rocky summit you can climb for even better views of the whole area! The path for this climb starts on the southeast side of the rocks, and there’s a rope to help you go up.

All in all, this place is a true hidden gem in Zakinthos, and most people still don’t know about it!

• Pelagaki Beach

There are lots of beaches in Zakynthos, but this one stands out because of its snow white pebbles and nice clear water. It’s similar to some of the scenic beaches in Kefalonia Greece .

This is one of the quieter and less touristy beaches in Zakynthos, with no music or sunbeds, although it’s occasionally disrupted by noisy boats dropping off tourists, so that’s the only downside. At the top of the hill, there’s a small canteen selling food and drinks.

The beach itself is fantastic from above or below, and you can reach it in about 5 minutes by hiking down a steep dirt path. Even though it doesn’t have the easiest access, the beach is beautiful and well worth a visit!

Paralia Pelagaki Beach

• Korakonissi

This beach might be one of the most unusual locations in Zakynthos Greece.

Actually, it’s not really a beach, but more like a little rocky peninsula with a natural arch and some tide pools for swimming.

The path down to the water is rocky and a bit steep in places, so it’s not the greatest. You can go down in about 5 minutes. I wouldn’t recommend it for kids or older folks, but you can enjoy great views of Korakonissi without going all the way to the bottom.

Korakonissi

Korakonissi

There are three places to swim: in the tide pool to the right, in the open sea to the left, or inside the cave below the arch.

It’s a spectacular location, and climbing on the rocks gives you some different views of everything. The water inside the cave is incredibly blue.

Parking is limited here, so you’ll want to arrive early if possible. The road is a bit steep and turns into gravel near the end, so depending on your vehicle, you may need to park before you reach the bottom of the road.

There is a cafe in the parking lot with nice views and reasonable prices for Greek food. Enjoy!

Best Zakynthos Photo Spot

There are many beautiful photo spots in Zakynthos, but I think the winner would have to be the Navagio Viewpoint , followed by the Myzithres Rocks in second place. Third place for me might be Plakaki Beach.

If you only have time for two boat tours in Zakynthos, do Navagio and the Keri Caves. These are on opposite sides of the island, so you may need two separate days to do them, but we thought the tour at Keri Caves was even better than the Blue Caves! It’s also a longer tour, so you get more time to enjoy the scenery.

For drone pilots, it’s possible to take amazing photos on the west coast of Zakynthos island, which is all lined with steep limestone cliffs.

The locals in Greece aren’t strict about drones. EU regulations on drones aren’t really enforced here, and there are lots of quiet places to fly without disturbing anyone. If in doubt, just ask before you fly.

Best Zakynthos Beaches

To be honest, Zakynthos beaches generally aren’t as nice as the ones on say, Kefalonia island , and they’re very overrun with tourists during the summer months. For the best experience, you’ll want to arrive early and find a good parking spot before the crowds get there.

If you want sandy beaches in Zakynthos, check out Banana Beach, Porto Zorro, or Alykanas Beach. If you’re mainly wanting spectacular views, go to Porto Limnionas or Plakaki Beach. These aren’t sandy beaches, but the views are wonderful and they can still be great spots for swimming and sunbathing.

The famous Navagio Beach also has amazing views with nice sand and water, although it’s usually crowded with boats and people.

Here’s a Zakynthos island map you can use to plan your trip in Greece.

You can click the icons on this map to get more info and directions for each point of interest, but keep in mind some of the locations may be approximate.

Attractions to visit by land are marked in blue, while harbors (and nearby attractions to reach by sea) are marked in orange.

Best Sunset Spot In Zakynthos

Zakynthos island has a long west-facing coastline, so naturally there are lots of good sunset spots to enjoy.

One of the most popular places to watch the sunset is at the Navagio Viewpoint (above the beach), where you can use a wide panoramic photo to capture the beach together with the sunset.

For a more quiet sunset, our favorite spot was the cross at the Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon, which is also located near the shipwreck viewpoint.

To find the cross for sunset, walk along the short path behind the monastery until you’ve gone about 150 meters down the hill. It’s a really nice spot, and you’ll most likely have it all to yourself!

If you want dinner in Zakinthos with an epic sunset view to end the day, check out Aeras Taverna , Porto Schiza Restaurant , Cross Taverna , or the Keri Lighthouse Restaurant .

All of these restaurants and sunset spots are located on the west side of the island, so a bit of driving is required if you’re coming from town.

There are also some tours available that will take you to one of the good sunset spots in Zakynthos and handle all of the transportation for you.

What To Bring

Here are some packing suggestions for your trip to Zakynthos Greece.

Most of the items below can probably be found on the island in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).

It’s best to buy vetted products online!

  • Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Snorkeling Gear: Good for exploring the clear waters around Zakynthos, and sometimes you can even see turtles. Snorkels and masks can be borrowed or rented from the boat companies too, but if you plan to do multiple tours it’s better to bring your own gear.
  • Water Shoes: Save your feet some grief and wear water shoes! Many of the beaches in Zakynthos have rocky shorelines, so water shoes are very helpful for getting in and out of the water.

Other Zakynthos Tips

  • Credit Cards: You can pay by credit card for most hotels, restaurants, and other things in Zakynthos, but it’s still a good idea to carry cash (in Euros). Some smaller restaurants only take cash, or the card machines may go down. If you show up at the harbor and want to book a boat tour on the spot, then they’ll ask you to pay in cash. This is part of the advantage of booking tours online, that way you can pay by credit card and save your cash for those little family owned tavernas with top notch food and low prices.
  • ATM: There are ATMs within reach of every corner of the island. We usually pulled 200 Euros at a time, and never had any issues. One thing to note is that the ATMs will offer you their own conversion rate (which is a really bad rate), or you can continue in Euros. Make sure you choose Euros without their silly conversion rate. This is a well known scam at ATMs in Greece, but it’s easily avoided if you know what you’re doing.
  • Cell Service: Phone reception is strong across most of Zakinthos island, although you may lose service in some places while driving around because of the hilly terrain of the island.

Zakynthos Greece Island Travel Guide Zakinthos Zante Keri Caves Beach

The perfect place to go for a swim

  • WiFi: Internet quality in Zakynthos is not the greatest, but it’s improving, especially in the main town areas. Don’t expect WiFi speeds on par with Athens (or other European countries), but it’s generally good enough for emails, browsing, and maybe a little bit of streaming.
  • Language: The local language in Zakynthos is Greek, of course, but almost everyone speaks and understands enough English for conversation. Lots of UK tourists visit the Ionian islands, so the locals are accustomed to speaking English with travelers.
  • Mosquitoes: We had very few encounters with mosquitoes in Zakynthos, and the island isn’t known to be home to the West Nile Virus, so it’s not really a significant concern here.
  • Water: The tap water in Zakynthos is supposed to be safe to drink, but it doesn’t taste good. It’s better to drink bottled water, which is cheap and can be found at any mini market. You can use the tap water for cooking or brushing your teeth.

Is Zakynthos Safe?

Yes, Zakynthos is a very safe place to visit!

Greece has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues with crime.

The locals in Zakynthos are very friendly, especially if you get out of the busy town and go to some of the quiet villages in the countryside.

Is Zakynthos Worth It?

If you still can’t make up your mind, then yes, Zakynthos is definitely worth it!

This is a beautiful Greek island with great food, people, and scenery. You can enjoy a sunset dinner by the cliffs, or explore a sea cave by boat. Famous bucket list views like Navagio Beach are also icing on the cake.

In spite of the summer tourist crowds, Zakynthos is undoubtedly one of the quintessential Greek islands in my opinion. It’s also fairly easy to reach from Athens, and the infrastructure is improving every day.

How Long To Stay

There are loads of good things to do in Zakynthos. The best highlights will take at least 3 days to see, but one week is more ideal.

We spent two weeks in Zakynthos, and easily could have found more activities to do if we had stayed longer.

Zakynthos Itinerary

Here’s what a sample 4-day itinerary for Zakinthos island could look like, assuming you’ve rented a car :

  • Day 1: Northwest Zakynthos . Visit the Navagio Beach viewpoint and see the famous shipwreck from above. Make a quick stop at the nearby monastery, and then drive to Porto Vromi, where you can take a boat to the shipwreck beach and also tour some of the nearby caves. Relax at Porto Limnionas Beach or Korakonissi, and then have dinner at San Leon Tavern or one of the other great restaurants in the area.
  • Day 2: North Zakynthos . Drive to Agios Nikolaos Harbor and rent a boat to go to the Blue Caves for scenery and swimming. Next, drive to the Potamitis Viewpoint and walk down the stairs by the ocean. Lastly, relax at Pelagaki Beach or Xigia Sulfur Beach.
  • Day 3: Southwest Zakynthos . Drive to Keri Lake Harbor, and then rent a boat to go to Marathonisi Island, Keri Caves, and Myzithres Beach. Next, drive to Plakaki Viewpoint and hike down to the beach (if you’re fit and able). Lastly, go see the Myzithres Rocks from above and enjoy the sunset at Keri Lighthouse Restaurant.
  • Day 4: East Zakynthos . If you’re feeling adventurous, hike or drive up the steep gravel road to Monastery Panagia Skopiotissa, and enjoy the historic buildings and panoramic views of Zakynthos island. Bring plenty of water. Afterwards, relax at Banana Beach, Porto Zorro, or one of the many other beaches in the area. If you have extra time, check out the Cameo Island Beach Bar.

I hope this sample itinerary gives you some ideas for your own trip to Zakynthos! As always, feel free to ask any questions if you have them.

Zakynthos Hotels

Best time to visit zakynthos greece.

The best time to visit Zakinthos island depends on what you’re looking for, but generally the nicest weather is from early May to late October. All of these months are mostly warm and sunny. The shoulder months in spring and autumn can be nice if you’re wanting good weather without the crowds.

The hottest months in Greece are July and August, and Zakynthos during this time has temperatures of up to 32 °C (91 °F) during the day time, and lows of 21 °C (70 °F). This can be great for swimming in a pool or lounging at the beach, although these two months can also be a a lot more busy with tourists.

Winter in Zakynthos is fairly mild, but it’s wetter, cooler, and more overcast. High temperatures are around 14 °C (57 °F), and lows are around 8 °C (46 °F). Not as many boats and tours are running at this time, but you may get a good deal on hotels and things.

Regardless of when you decide to visit Zante, you’re sure to have a memorable trip!

Do you need to rent a car to get around on this island?

' src=

Hi. A car isn’t required if you stay near town, but it can still be nice for exploring other parts of the island. We used DiscoverCars in Greece and would recommend them. The other option for getting around is to book day tours that include transport. There are shared and private tours that go to many of the best places on the island.

What are the other ways to get around the island if you don’t have a car? Does the island have buses?

Hi. There’s also an affordable bus service offered by KTEL Zakynthos , although keep in mind some of the bus routes are seasonal (summer only). Their website has a full list of prices and routes on the island. For short distance trips near town, you can walk to beaches, shops, and such places. Best Time to Visit Zakynthos

Not sure when is the best time to visit Zakynthos ? To plan your dream holidays in Zakynthos, there are various factors to consider, including accommodation, activities' availability and the weather . Most people choose the summer season for visiting the island, although Zakynthos does have many beauties to offer at any time of the year.

Jump to: • High Season • Shoulder Season • Low Season

In brief, the best time to visit Zakynthos is the shoulder season, which includes May and September. During these months, you will get to experience the sunny summer weather without having to deal with mass tourism at the island's popular locations.

The shoulder season and the low season are good options only if you are into an alternative kind of vacation. This is not the best time if you enjoy swimming at the beach since the weather gets colder. However, there are a few things to do even if you are an off-season visitor and you will certainly not be disappointed!

Visit Zakynthos in the High Season (Summer)

For Zakynthos, the summer is the peak season in terms of tourism. During June, July and August , you will get to experience a very vivid atmosphere , especially at the island's most popular beaches, which tend to get crowded. The temperature also peaks in July and August, so this is the best time for swimming and sea-related activities.

Weather conditions

During the summer, the temperature is usually around 30°C or more. All days are sunny and rainfalls are extremely rare. The weather on the island is not very windy but there is almost always a light summer breeze.

Things to do

At this time of the year, the conditions are ideal for exploring the island's sandy beaches and enjoying their cool waters, although one may find the midday sunlight too strong. Watersports are also recommended. During the evening, you will have the opportunity to experience the island's intense nightlife.

The island of Zakynthos is among the most popular summer destinations in Greece. For this reason, it gets quite busy during the summer. If you are planning to go on vacation during the summer season, booking your hotel and ferry tickets at least a few months in advance is necessary in order to make sure that they will not sell out.

Visit Zakynthos in the Shoulder Season (Spring & Autumn)

The shoulder season in Zakynthos includes the months of May and September , right before and after the peak season. This is the best time of the year to visit the island if you would rather avoid the tourists crowds and the hustle and bustle of the summer. The scenery at the beaches is far more peaceful since even the most popular ones do not get extremely crowded. At the same time, the slightly lower temperatures will allow you to enjoy the sea, while also making time spent outdoors more pleasant.

As for the weather, shoulder season temperatures are between 20°C and 25°C . September is usually warmer than May, with a higher sea temperature as well. There are about 10 hours of bright sunlight and most days are sunny. The rainy season does not start until mid to late autumn.

The shoulder season is the best time for outdoor activities . You will have an amazing time discovering beaches with crystalline waters, doing sports and visiting castles, monasteries and other sights all around Zakynthos.

Most hotels and other tourist facilities are open for the shoulder season. Availability is higher but you can still benefit from early bookings. Keep an eye out for special offers as well.

Visit Zakynthos in the Low Season (Winter)

For most visitors, the low season is not considered the best time for your holidays in Zakynthos unless you are down for an alternative kind of vacation. Although the island's weather never gets too cold, Zakynthos is primarily seen as a summer destination and your options at this time of the year will be limited. The timespan from October to April is considered the low season .

The temperature in Zakynthos during the low season is around 15°C-17°C in spring and winter and around 20°C in late autumn . Most days are cloudy , there are limited daylight hours and the sea temperature is 16 °C , which means this is not the best time for swimming. Rainfalls are a common phenomenon during the low season.

There are not many things to do in Zakynthos during the low season. You can still visit the island's beaches, including Shipwreck Beach , but they are empty and you may find the water too cold. Zakynthos Town is still lively in the winter, with plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars to visit.

If you decide to visit Zakynthos during the low season, you should keep in mind that many hotels shut down from late autumn to spring and your options will be limited. It is also a good idea to have alternatives in terms of things to do, in case of bad weather, especially on cold and rainy days that are certainly not the best time to visit outdoor places of interest.

This Underrated Greek Island Has an Adorable Town, Incredible Food, and a Famous Shipwreck Beach — How to Visit

Here’s the ultimate guide to Zakynthos, the Ionian wonder famed for its picture-perfect Shipwreck Beach.

Instantly recognizable by its astounding luminous turquoise seas enclosed within soaring craggy bluffs, Greece’s Insta-famous Shipwreck Beach is Zakynthos’ claim to global fame. An unwavering favorite among Travel + Leisure readers, the beach, known in Greece as Navagio, frequently tops best beach lists .

Situated off the Mediterranean country’s western mainland, Zakynthos is a member of the Ionian island group, a dreamy blend of blues and greens. The seas that wash Zakynthos and its neighbors range in hue from pale aqua to teal, while the landscapes are cloaked in olive trees, numbering an estimated two million, along with pine trees, citrus orchards, and rare flowers like sea daffodils. Bougainvillea and jasmine bring vivid color and aroma to the isle which its former Venetian rulers named Fior di Levante (the flower of the East).

While Zakynthos has long been known, particularly among young British holidaymakers, as a wild party isle, many locals have worked hard over the years to shrug off this reputation. Most bars that give the island this name are limited to the southern beach town of Laganas. So, you may want to avoid this part of the island altogether.

Most visitors to Zakynthos are drawn to its diverse beaches — some sandy, others lined in fine pebbles or rocky, and caves ideal for snorkeling. The island is unique because it hosts the most important nesting ground for the endangered Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). In fact, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos was established in 1999 to safeguard this delicate habitat, particularly on beaches in the south, as well as other wildlife, including the Mediterranean monk seal. Rubys Sakis Kandilas, CEO of Explore Zakynthos and a licensed tour guide, told T+L that environmental organization volunteers work diligently to raise awareness among locals and visitors of the need to safeguard turtle nest locations.

Beyond its natural attractions, Zakynthos is evolving into an enticing culinary destination, according to Sophia Kladis, manager of Windmill Bay Hotel . From traditional family-owned tavernas sourcing organic produce from their own farm to upscale seaside restaurants reinventing recipes with deep-seated Venetian roots, there is plenty to keep foodies curious.

Rounding out the experience, Zakynthians make for the utmost hosts, going out of their way to ensure you savor every minute on this wondrous isle.

Longing to lounge on Zakynthos' fine beaches? Here’s how to plan an unforgettable vacation on the island.

  • Capture the surreal beauty of Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach — known worldwide as one of the most beautiful in the country.
  • Swim in the Blue Caves and remote coves via a skippered charter or self-drive around the island.
  • Explore Zakynthos town.
  • Take a boat tour to the north or south to spot sea turtles and see coves only accessible via water.

Olea All-Suite Hotel

A fluid free-form pool connects the 93 rooms at the minimalist, adult-focused, five-star Olea All-Suite Hotel , ensconced amid silvery olive and carob trees on a hillside in Tsilivi facing the Ionian. Organic materials such as bamboo, rattan, and oak grace the soothing indoor-outdoor living spaces that merge effortlessly. Set aside plenty of time for spa treatments featuring Babor products.

Lesante Cape

Situated in Akrotiri, this upscale seafront resort echoes classic Zakynthian architecture in the form of stone-built arches framed with white bands and terracotta-tiled rooftops. Suited to families and couples alike, Lesante Cape features 55 rooms and 10 villas dressed in neutral hues, infinity pools, five restaurants sourcing ingredients from an organic garden, a spa, and even a cultural museum showcasing the island’s heritage.

Domes Aulūs Zante

Conscious of its location in Kalamaki, at a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles, guests of Domes Aulūs Zante are encouraged to contribute to local sustainability initiatives.

See Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach

You’ll never forget the first time you saw Shipwreck Beach, known as Navagio in Greek. A rusty shipwreck, now split in half, lies half-submerged in bright white sand surrounded by vertical cliffs and washed by luminous cyan seas. The views are equally awe-inspiring, whether you peer down from the top, stay within the confines of a safety platform, or take in the views from the sea. While landslides in recent years have closed off the beach to visitors, you can reach the bay by boat and swim offshore at a safe distance.

Reach Secret Beaches by Boat

Boat tours ply the northern and southern coasts and offer the opportunity to swim and snorkel in translucent waters. Those headed north pause at Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves and stop at secluded coves accessible only by sea. Those heading south visit Marathonisi (Turtle Island) in Laganas Bay, picturesque Cameo Island, and the Keri Caves. Those lucky enough may catch a glimpse of a sea turtle. Kladis recommends choosing one itinerary or spreading it over two days rather than a full-day island circumnavigation, which can be tiring. Alternatively, rent a self-drive boat or hire a skippered motorboat .

Visit the Turtle Rescue Center

At Zakynthos’ southeastern tip, you’ll find Gerakas Beach, one of the island’s most important nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles ( Caretta caretta ). There, you can visit the Zante Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Center , open May to October free of charge, and learn more about the endangered mammal and how to reduce your impact on their life cycle and habitat. Most importantly, you’ll find out what you should do if you see a turtle in the sea or hatchlings leaving their nest.

Courtesy of Nobelos

In Agios Nikolaos, on the northeast coast, yachties drop anchor at family-owned Nobelos , at the edge of a pine forest. Spend a day lounging on sunbeds on a petite, sandy beach, then relish stellar sea-to-fork fish, seafood, and firmly traditional Greek fare in stylish yet welcoming surroundings. Produce is sourced from the owners’ organic farm, and fish are transported via wooden caique. Bookings are recommended.

Located beside Solomos Square in Zakynthos Town, Prosilio is the island’s definitive fine dining destination. Talented young chef Kristy Karageorgou crafts whimsical dishes with distinctive Zakynthian ingredients that look almost too good to eat. Try the cuttlefish ravioli stuffed with sauteed greens (tsigareli), langoustine, and kourkoutzelia, an edible violet wildflower, or the signature pork ragu with local tavla cheese foam.

Ampelostrates

In the south, head inland to Ampelostrates in Kiliomenos village for wholesome Zakynthian dishes in an atmospheric stone-built farmhouse-turned-mezedopolio amid grape vines, lemon trees, and wandering chickens. “It’s traditional but quirky. The type of place where the owner will serve a wine they produced this year,” said Kladis. “They make pies with wild greens and kouneli ladorigano (rabbit with olive oil and oregano), one of their special dishes.”

On Dafni Beach, which falls within marine park boundaries, family-run old-school tavernas like Porto Mela are run on generators as electricity isn’t permitted. Kandilas recommends the in-house bread baked in a wood-fired oven and served with olive oil from the owner’s grove, tomato, and garlic. Stifado, a hearty rabbit stew made with onions, and ladotiri, a slightly spicy native cheese made with sheep and goat milk and matured in local olive oil, is a must-try, he added.

Right on the port in Zakynthos Town, Varkarola is not simply a taverna beloved of locals and visitors alike but “one of the last remaining families keeping Zakynthos’ Venetian kantada (serenade) tradition alive,” Kandilas said. Immerse yourself in the heartfelt song, accompanied by mandolin and acoustic guitar, as you dine on house specials, veal sofrito, and slow-roasted beer-marinated pork shank.

Maremagnum/Getty Images

Zakynthos’ warm-weather season runs from April to October, with July and August proving the busiest and hottest months of the year. In August, boat trips, restaurants, and even sun loungers on the beach need to be booked ahead, Kladis said. Toward the end of the month, a feast day celebrating the island’s patron saint can cause traffic jams on the roads leading into Zakynthos Town. Kladis recommended visiting in early June or in September. “It’s not over-crowded, it’s still warm, and there are just enough people to bring the island to life,” said Kladis. “You can see and experience everything you’d like to without having to book a week in advance.”

The quickest way to reach Zakynthos is by plane. Flights from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to the island take about 60 minutes and operate daily. From the mainland, ferries depart from Kyllini port in the northwestern Peloponnese four times a day in summer and take one hour and 15 minutes. Zakynthos features on cruise line itineraries, including those of Atlas Ocean Voyages, Norwegian, and Azamara.

Anton Petrus/Getty Images

Zakynthos Town

Spend a day in the capital, Zakynthos Town. “Start at Zakynthos port, where you can see yachts in the harbor,” Kandilas said. Marvel at the grandeur of Agios Dionysios Church and its bell tower. Dedicated to the island’s patron saint, its Catholic architectural style contrasts with the Orthodox domed style. “Then head to Solomos Square to view the statue of poet Dionysios Solomos, who composed Greece’s national anthem. On Agios Markos Square, visit the museum dedicated to him and other eminent Zakynthians,” Kandilas said. Pore over portraits, photographs, and period furniture. Also, head to the Venetian castle ruins atop Bohali Hill for panoramic sea views.

Northern Zakynthos

Kladis recommended venturing to the island’s north by car or boat. “There are some villas and houses and a few traditional preserved buildings, but, mostly, it’s very natural,” she said. “The beaches are rockier than in the south, and the waters are deep and blue. It’s just so calming and picturesque.”

Southern Zakynthos

Heading south, you’ll encounter warmer seas and sandy beaches that shelve gradually, making them more kid-friendly. Vassilikos is home to some of the island’s best beaches, according to Kandilas. Sweeping Laganas Bay, a popular swim spot, forms part of the strictly-regulated National Marine Park of Zakynthos . This protected area is home to over 300 fauna species, including loggerhead sea turtles and Mediterranean monk seals, and more than 170 types of marine flora.

Heading inland from the southeastern seaside resort of Argassi, an essential lookout during Venetian rule, you’ll find one of Zakynthos’ two domed churches. Stroll around the ruins of the 15th-century stone-built Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery built on an ancient temple dedicated to goddess Artemis and take in Ionian views from atop Skopos mountain. Closer to the town is the 16th-century Domeneghini Tower , which is closely associated with Greece’s 1821 War of Independence.

By Rental Car: Book a rental car in advance, particularly if visiting during summer. “It’s safest to travel by car. In summer, it’s hot, and distances are long, so you want to be comfortable,” said Kandilas.

By Taxi: Between May and October, silver taxis operate 24 hours a day on the island. Cab ranks operate at the airport, Zakynthos Town, and the port and in popular resort areas on the eastern and southern coasts. They may cost more if booked in advance or via a hotel. There are fixed fares for numerous routes. It costs around 15 euros to reach Zakynthos Town from the airport.

Zakynthos Island (also known as Zante) is the third largest Greek island in the Ionian Sea, located off the west coast of mainland Greece.

Zakynthos town includes many squares — every corner and path seems to be brimming with Zakynthos history.

Did you know?: The Venetians ruled Zakynthos island from 1484 to 1797.

The island is now known as a tourist hotspot and it’s also home to two endangered species, the Caretta Caretta sea turtle and the Monachus seal.

Many landmarks are unique to this island such as the three Blue Caves and even a shipwreck to explore for the adventurous.

Before You Go: Travel Insurance

When planning a trip to Greece and the Greek Islands your first priority should be to make sure you make a small investment towards your health and well being by considering an  affordable travel insurance policy  for your trip.

Not only will this budget friendly travel insurance policy cover you if your bags are lost/stolen and if your flight is delayed/cancelled, but you’ll also be covered for all medical and injury related issues as well.

Let’s face it. No parents, family or friends want to have to cover the cost of you getting medevaced home from Greece.

Unfortunate things do happen.

Especially when you least expect it.

Do yourself a favor and consider purchasing travel insurance coverage for your trip so you can rest assured that you’ll be taken care of in the event of a serious emergency in Greece.

P.S. You won’t believe how reasonably priced this travel insurance is.

How to Get to Zakynthos

There are two main options when it comes to getting to Zakynthos — by sea (ferry) and by air.

Both methods of transportation are reliable but choosing between the two really depends on how much time you have to spend in Greece — more importantly how much time you have set aside for your trip to Zakynthos.

There are multiple, daily, direct flights from Athens to Zakynthos Airport and the approximate flight time is 1 hour.

The route from Athens to Zakynthos and vice versa is serviced year round but beware that the schedule could be limited during the late fall and winter months.

My recommendation is to always begin by  researching flights using Skyscanner before looking into taking a ferry to Zakynthos.

With flight costs hovering between $65-85 USD for a one-way ticket, how could you not want to fly?

Tip: Begin your flight search by using the Skyscanner engine embedded below.

If flights to Zakynthos are too expensive, the next best thing would be to resort to a more budget friendly method of transportation; take a ferry to Zakynthos.

Ferries to Zakynthos depart from the port of Kilini (also known as Kyllini) which is located on the Peloponnese peninsula.

The total trip time for the ferry from Kyllini to Zakynthos is approximately 1 hour and the cost is around €10 EUR for a one-way journey.

When it comes to booking ferries to Zakynthos, one of the most reliable and reasonably priced Greek ferry search engines is powered by a company called Ferries in Greece  (highly recommended), a major greek ferry booking hub that helps more than 35,000 passengers get to and from the Greek islands each year.

Things to Do in Zakynthos

There are a wide variety of activities to experience in Zakynthos, from boat trips to hidden caves, to spending time soaking up the sun on some of the best beaches in Zakynthos to visiting monasteries, castles and more.

Below, you’ll find a list of activities and other things to do in Zakynthos.

Be sure to choose your activities carefully because there are a few things on this list that you won’t want to miss.

Shipwreck Beach Zakynthos

Shipwreck Beach

Visiting Navagio Beach, otherwise known as the Shipwreck beach is one of the most popular things to do in Zakynthos, and for good reason.

This beach is absolutely incredible (although extremely touristy) and usually ends up on a list of most unique beaches in the world from time to time.

The only way to reach Shipwreck beach is by boat and the best way to get here is to take a full-day boat tour.

The journey to to Shipwreck beach takes approximately 45-50 minutes and is generally a pretty smooth ride if you’re visiting during the peak season.

A full-day boat tour usually lasts around 8 hours and includes a visit to Navagio beach as well as a visit to Zakynthos’ famous Blue Caves, a short bus ride to the top of the cliffs that overlook Shipwreck beach and a brief tasting at a local winery.

Cost: Approximately $50 USD / per person.

More Info Button

The Blue Caves are located on the east of Cape Skinari and they were created from centuries of erosion.

The caves are mostly known for the shades of deep blue water found in the deepest parts of the cave.

The morning light reflects off the water perfectly to create beautiful photo opportunities.

If you’re interested in visiting the Blue Caves, we recommend you book the full day tour above which includes a visit to Shipwreck beach and the Blue Caves all in one day.

Keri Caves Arch Zakynthos

The Keri Caves and “The Arch” are popular destinations for tourists to witness on Zakynthos island.

There are multiple scuba dive operators who run tours to the Keri Caves.

If you’re into scuba diving we recommend you take a tour and keep your eyes peeled for the loggerhead turtles (also known as Caretta-caretta turtles) that swim around in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

Lighthouse at Keri

Stunning views can be seen from the top of the Keri lighthouse which overlooks the cliffs in the distance.

At sunset, the light washes over the scene and creates yet another perfect moment to take pictures.

Marathonisi Island

Marathonisi island (also known as Turtle Island) is home to many Caretta-caretta sea turtles as the government goes above and beyond to protect their habitat.

Snorkeling equipment is available for those who want to take a peek under the water to see them.

Zakynthos Marine Park

The National Marine Park of Zakynthos is located on the south coast and focuses its efforts on sheltering the fragile ecosystem of the island.

The marine park protects the Caretta-Caretta turtles and the Monachus-Monachus Mediterranean seals.

With a wide diversity of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals as well, there is no shortage of wildlife in this national park.

Byzantine Museum

History buffs will be sure to enjoy the Byzantine Museum on the island — especially considering it only costs €8 to enter and offers tourists a chance to see various art pieces and 360-degree frescos.

The descriptions of art pieces found in the museum are explained in both Greek and English.

Nautical Museum

Founded by Anthony Miller, the Nautical Museum is the only Greek Museum to proudly display maritime history from as early as the 1600’s.

In addition to watercolors that show the progression of shipping, it also presents depictions of Byzantine ships from the beginning of the empire to their demise in 1453.

Church of St. Dionysios

The Church of St. Dionysios is gorgeous, elegant, and holy place that celebrates the Island’s Patron Saint.

Not only can visitors ask the priest to let them take a glimpse into a vault, but they are also encouraged to donate a list of names so that prayers can be offered to those on the list.

Venetian Fountain

The Venetian fountain is located in Krioneri and it brings back a part of history to the present day.

While it is only a stone fountain today, the long passages used to feed the entire city with water.

This location is sure to bring to light the immense knowledge that the ancients of this island once had.

Zakynthos Venetian Castle

The Zakynthos Venetian Castle is located in the city of Mpohalis and was the former capital of the island almost centuries ago.

The castle was demolished in 1480 but was renovated in 1514.

Today, any visitor can take a look at the old prison system, the way gunpowder was created, explore the premises of the fortress, and even old abandoned church ruins.

Anafonitria Monastery

The Anafonitria Monastery is a holy place where tourists sometimes visit as part of a Zakynthos island tour.

Here, you can learn about the history and culture of the island as well as enjoy the stunning scenery which surrounds the monastery.

Getting Around Zakynthos

Public transport is readily available on the island although we rarely recommend the use of public transport on the Greek islands due to the reliability factor and the fact that everything is on “Greek time”.

That being said, there are plenty of taxis available as well as more efficient ways of moving around the island such as renting cars and motorbikes.

Renting a car is the the best way to explore the island of Zakynthos.

Zakynthos is quite large — if you decide to rent a car for the duration of your trip, you’ll have the ability to go wherever you want whenever you want.

Looking for the the most reputable Zakynthos rental car company? We recommend RentalCars.com .

The next best way to explore the island is by moto or ATV — especially if you’re traveling as a couple.

Motos and ATV’s are much easier to maneuver on the narrow roads and you’ll also be able to explore more parts of the island which you wouldn’t be able to access by car.

Finding parking is also significantly easier when riding a moto on the island.

Unfortunately, Uber and Lyft don’t operate in Zante but thankfully, taxis are plentiful and are one of the most used forms of transportation on the island.

If you do take a taxi, make sure to negotiate the fare before getting in the car in order to avoid getting ripped off.

Best Time to Visit Zakynthos

The best time to visit Zakynthos is from mid May to late September, although peak season is usually from June to late August.

Tourists should note that Zakynthos weather can sometimes be unbearable during the peak season (June-August) when temperatures soar to 31-35C (90-95F+).

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit Zakynthos in May through the first week or two of June and the month of September.

As you can see above, Zakynthos truly has a lot of offer for tourists who are visiting for the first time.

If you’re looking to visit somewhat of a lesser known Greek island than let’s say Santorini or Mykonos, we highly recommend you check out Zakynthos island.

The Best Time to Visit Zakynthos

navagio beach with the famous wrecked ship in Zante, Greece

Zakynthos is arguably the most beautiful island in the Ionian Sea and a top holiday destination in Greece. World-renowned for its spectacular Navagio Beach , Zakynthos offers breathtaking landscapes perfect for relaxation. However, many travelers wonder when the best time to visit is, as it’s not always “summer” on this island. During peak summer months, tourists often outnumber locals, creating a vibrant but busy atmosphere. If you’re looking for an escape from hectic city life with plenty of outdoor activities under bright sunshine, summer is the ideal time to visit Zakynthos. For those seeking peace and quiet, consider visiting in the autumn or winter months when temperatures are pleasantly mild, averaging around 16-22 degrees Celsius.

The best time to visit Zakynthos is during the spring and autumn when the climate is most temperate. While winter can be quite rainy, it offers a milder experience with occasional highs nearing 30 degrees Celsius and lows below 10 degrees. These shoulder seasons provide a perfect balance, avoiding the intense heat of summer and the crowds, making it ideal for a more relaxed and enjoyable stay.

Summer on Zakynthos offers a plethora of activities that will delight any tourist. Enjoy swimming at pristine beaches, engaging in exciting water sports by the shore, and watching stunning sunsets just steps away from where you sit. However, during peak summer months, Zakynthos can become quite crowded, making it challenging to find a spot on its beautiful sandy shores or along its palm-lined avenues due to the influx of visitors.

For most people, the best time to visit Zakynthos is from March through May and September until early December. During these months, the weather is pleasant with temperatures perfect for sightseeing without being too hot or humid. Plus, heavy rainfall is unlikely.

To summarize, the weather is ideal during these low-season periods, and prices tend to be lower too, making it a great time to visit Zakynthos.

7 Things to Know Before You Visit Zakynthos, Greece

7 Things to Know Before You Visit Zakynthos, Greece

If you are the type of person that Google searches for everything before visiting a foreign country, then I strongly suggest that you go ahead and type “ best beaches in Greece ” on your search engine.

I bet all my money that you will not manage to find even one article which has omitted the Shipwreck (also called Navagio) beach. And that’s why Zakynthos is a worldwide famous island, aside from its incredible Ionian views and sea.

Of course, Zakynthos is also known for limitless partying among British teens, and a large number of visitors choose to visit for this reason and only.

That said, whether you’re looking for a relaxing escape or a wild adventure, Zakynthos is the place for both. I experienced both sides of the island and I still cannot understand, how this can be true – but it is.

So if you’re not sure this year what type of vacation you’d like to do, then choose to have a bit of everything in Zakynthos.

What To Know Before You Visit Zakynthos

Choose the right place to stay.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

Zakynthos is a pretty big place and your decision regarding your accommodation needs to be a bit careful. According to your age, type and needs, you can choose a different location on the island.

Zakynthos, also called Zante, is widely known among British teenagers and young adults, who are regular visitors of Laganas . Laganas, which is a bay of the island, is advertised as the place of “non-stop partying” and “wild entertainment well into the night”. And it’s exactly that and nothing less.

So if you’re looking for a hotel or room, in which you will sleep mostly… in the morning after a wild night of partying, then go ahead and book your stay in one of the countless studios and resorts of Laganas.

However, if you are the type of visitor that is attracted more to the… sleepy side of the island, then your options are plenty as well. Tsilivi, Argasi, Bochali or close to Vasilikos beach are the most appropriate accommodation hotspots and great starting points for your excursions.

Do not wait to visit Shipwreck Beach !

best time to visit zakynthos greece

One of your first pro moves is to book your tour. Let’s get some things straight first. The Shipwreck (or Navagio in Greek) beach is accessible only by boat. That means that, if you try to get there alone with a car/ATV etc. you will end up taking only a (no-doubt very cool) selfie, with the panoramic view of the beach.

There are many boat tours offered and if you don’t find them, they’ll find you. Still, I recommend booking in advance to get the best tour and time slot, since if you want to avoid the big masses of tourists, you need to try to get an early boat tour and be there before 12:00.

There are several options for boat tours; our preferred option is this tour which combines the Shipwreck Beach & the Blue Caves on a full-day tour. We picked this one because you can choose an early 8 AM start so you can actually visit the beach before the main crowds hit, as well as add on the stunning Blue Caves to your itinerary.

Avoid the crowds – book your Shipwreck Beach & Blue Caves tour today!

best time to visit zakynthos greece

There are several other boat tours you can choose in case you don’t want to visit the Blue Caves or the thought of waking up before 8 AM is too much to beat. In the end, the only thing that matters is that you get to the beach and get to swim in the clearest and bluest waters you’ve ever seen.

On the beach, there is, of course, a shipwreck and it’s no other than “Panayotis” ship. There’s not really a dramatic story behind the ornament of the famous hotspot. Rumors have it that it was smuggling cigarettes and due to bad weather and technical problems, it stranded on the remote beach.

No passengers were harmed during the incident, so you can enjoy a dive without a pang of guilt.

But don’t forget that there are also other beaches worth visiting on the island

best time to visit zakynthos greece

Shipwreck Beach is probably the highlight of Zakynthos. And yet, it keeps getting better.

Agios Nikolaos beach (Saint Nicolas) is the ultimate fun summer setting. If you’re looking for a place to drink a cocktail by the beach and have some relaxed time, Agios Nikolaos’s golden sand is waiting for you.

If then again you’re more fond of the silence, Gerakas beach is no doubt a great choice. Forget your Bluetooth speakers and private umbrellas, cause… you might scare the turtles! Gerakas beach has been chosen to be the “maternity home” by Caretta Carettas, who have surely noticed that the Ionian view has a soothing ability.

Moreover, you can pay a visit to a village, named Keri , where you can find another sandy beach offering watersports.

Last but not least, Porto Limnionas is one of the hidden treasures. It’s a real fjord that exemplifies the beauty of Zakynthos island. Porto Limnionas is not your typical sandy beach but offers crystal clear frozen waters in a beautiful scenic bay.

All in all, there are probably more beaches than your vacation days on the island! Other names you should have in mind while visiting are Porto Zoro, Dafni, Alikanas, Alikes and Porto Xygkia . Just in case you have time and energy left to try a different beach.

Spend some time with sea turtles because you can !

best time to visit zakynthos greece

I could make probably 1000 cringy jokes about turtles that are shell-arious. But I’m gonna stop right here and move on with the crucial info. There are many ways to see turtles on Zakynthos: boat tours, turtle beaches, and diving.

What I believe is more enjoyable than being on a boat that “hunts” turtles for souvenir pics, is naturally bumping into a turtle on a beach. Of course, it’s all about what works best for you. Plenty of boat tours are offered on the island, and this is the one we recommend , as it brings you to Marathonisi Island where the Caretta Caretta turtles nest.

However, there’s the old fashioned way of simply going to Marathonisi (the Turtle Island), which is only approachable by boat and patiently wait for a turtle to show up. However, there is no guarantee that you will actually see turtles this way.

Snorkeling or diving, again, is a very natural way to observe turtles. But – wait for it – no one promises that you will come across the turtles underwater!

In other words, I cannot give you a magic insider’s tip, that will magically bring a gang of turtles to you, willing to hold a selfie stick and hang out with your group. But, what I can promise is that success is a journey, not a destination. Searching for them is half the fun!

Still want to seek out turtles? Check out this glass bottom boat tour which brings you to Turtle Island!

If then again, you absolutely want to spend time with this amazing sea creature, there’s always the option for you to volunteer in Archelon, the Sea Turtle protection society of Greece. Here’s their website for more info.

Eat like a Greek

best time to visit zakynthos greece

We both know that the rest of the article is just a preface. This is the moment we were all waiting for: Zakynthos food tips.

The way I see it, there are always two types of travelers. The one that prefers the touristic restaurants and the one that wants to experience the local lifestyle and food. Don’t look at me, I like both and I eat everything. So I’m going to highlight both types of places with the same enthusiasm.

Since you’re on an island, expect amazing seafood. Grecos restauran t in Laganas is an excellent option for that and is highly suggested. For a more idyllic view, while enjoying your gourmet Greek salad, a visit to Aperitto is worth your time. The setting is very romantic, so it’s perfect if you’re still on a honeymoon phase or… you want to go back to the honeymoon phase.

Greek traditional tavernas, usually with local wine and culinary masterpieces, are spread all over the island. On your way to Vasilikos, the taverna O Aderfos tou Kosta is an amazing choice. There, you can enjoy your warm dinner after a refreshing dive in the beach, in a garden with Greek music.

If then again you start wondering where the so-called “Greek hospitality” is hidden, Xigia taverna is your type of place. Local food and a father and daughter serving you will make you feel welcome in the best possible way!

Last but not least, Malanos is a value for money taverna and definitely not at all worse than the previously mentioned restaurants. You might struggle a bit to find it, but the best places are always hidden.

Have a taste of Zakynthos nightlife

best time to visit zakynthos greece

When it comes to the nightlife, it’s all about what you are looking for as a traveler. Luckily, there are options for all. And I mean it. Whether you are a party-goer or a party-pooper, Zakynthos has your type of night outing taken care of.

There’s a lot of criticism against Laganas as a party place, due to extreme behaviors of drunk visitors. Although I understand the point of the locals and local authorities, Laganas has its own character and a separate place in my heart (as all party places do).

My suggestion for Laganas is the Cocktails and Dreams club. When order at the Bartender a Gin&Tonic, he might ask you back “I have one that costs 3€ and one that costs 6€. Which one do you want?”.

Now, it’s not a time for money saving. You love your liver more than this, so choose the second option and have a safe and fun night!

Small hint, you can go out on the balcony of the club and enjoy the view of the party street and possibly masses of drunk people. Yes, that’s what we “sober ones” do when you get drunk.

Laganas is not, of course, your only option for a night outing. It is just the most intense. However, locals prefer spending their nights in all the other places left on the island. Argasi is considered the most appropriate place for Greek people, who usually prefer the clubs Barrage and Island .

In Argasi, you can also discover a hipster bar named Portokali (or “Orange”), with a great selection of drinks and sweets.

Additionally, you can enjoy a really well-made cocktail in the bars of Bochali . There, you can find an abundance of cafeterias, creperies and ice-cream shops as well. My personal favorite is Base , and I can recall drinking an amazing “pornstar martini” there.

Last but not least, in Tsilivi , you can find once again parties in Laganas’ style.

Add some sightseeing to your schedule

best time to visit zakynthos greece

To begin with, Zakynthos has a castle. If you’re not aware of it beforehand, you can easily miss that point of interest… as it happened to me. The castle is above Bochali and during the morning hours, you can visit it to see the remains of the old capital of the island.

The Keri Cape is another must-visit place. Rumors have it that you can enjoy the best sunset view from this location. The lighthouse of the village offers a great view of the endless blue of the Ionian sea, on top of a 300 meter high cliff.

Remember that when you reach a large parking area in Keri, on your left you will find a small path, leading to the perfect view spot. Don’t try to go there by car, as it’s very probable that your car will end up being a part of the Ionian view. On your right, you can enjoy the view of the Keri Rocks (or in Greek “Mizithres”).

If you’re the type that cannot go to a place without visiting a museum, I suggest that you give The Byzantine Museum . There you can find paintings of the Byzantium era and religious art. Many of the pieces are of high value and it’s totally worth to see.

You could also pay a visit to Museum of D. Solomos and A. Kalvos . Located in St. Marco square is the museum of two well known Greek poets including Dionysios Solomos. D. Solomos is best known for writing the Hymn to Liberty, which became the Greek and Cypriot national anthem in 1865.

However, since the most important pieces are texts in Greek, I guess it wouldn’t be so exciting for a foreigner. Unless of course, you can read Greek! In that case, this museum is of great national interest and a visit is definitely recommended.

Want to Rent a Car for Zakynthos?

While not all trips to Zakynthos require a car, if you’re staying far from the main town for the local bus station or you want to tour the island independently without going on a guided tour, a rental car may come in handy!  [Just don’t drive if you’re going to be drinking, obviously — taxis exist for that reason!]

We’ve rented cars dozens of times in the Balkans through various search engines and have settled on Discover Cars as the best car rental search engine – it searches over 500 trusted rental companies to find the cheapest price for your rental!  Compare prices for car rental in Zakynthos here.

What to Bring to Zakynthos

best time to visit zakynthos greece

If you’re planning a trip to Greece, you’ll want to pack all the normal essentials, but here are a few things we strongly recommend bringing that may not have crossed your mind. For more packing tips, check out our complete  Greece packing list.

–  A physical guidebook, in paper or on Kindle . We love  Lon ely  Planet  Greece  for this region and strongly recommend it to supplement blogs. Blogs are great, but a combination of a blog and a guidebook is key to having the best access to information easily at your fingertips.

–  A water bottle with a filter . While often, the tap water in Greece is drinkable, there are places where it isn’t, including some popular tourist destinations like Santorini and Mykonos.

We generally recommend using a water bottle with a purifying filter to reduce your plastic consumption and ensure you won’t drink any funny-tasting water on your stomach that could make your trip unpleasant!

We recommend  the GRAYL water bottle  – it filters water perfectly in an instant so that you can even drink from lakes, bad taps, etc.

–  Motion sickness pills . Very necessary if you’ll be taking a ferry or boat! The ferries in the Mediterranean can be quite choppy. If you have a weak stomach as we do, save yourself and bring some  non-drowsy motion sickness pills .

–  Travel safety items . We think Greece is very safe to travel, but at the same time, it never hurts to be prepared! Zakynthos is rather safe, but is not immune from pickpockets, so be cautious (this goes double if you plan to go to Athens – the metro is notorious for its pickpockets, and a travel blogger friend of ours got his phone stolen on it!). Some people like to carry  money belts , but neither Stephanie or I use these. Instead, we both carry the same  PacSafe anti-theft backpack .

It has locking zippers, slash-proof construction with metal mesh hidden in the fabric, and tons of other smart security features — all while being cute and stylish enough to be our everyday bag. We recommend it highly for both male and female travelers, as it’s neutral enough to be unisex. We also strongly recommend travel insurance! Our recommendation is at the bottom of the post.

I’m sure you’re aware that it’s a good idea to have  travel insurance  for traveling in Greece, the Balkans, or anywhere in the world!

We have both been paying customers of  World Nomads  for the last three years. We love the peace of mind it gives us in case of emergencies, accidents, illnesses, theft, or trip cancellation or disruption.  While Greece is safe, there’s always a risk inherent in everyday travel like theft or injury, so it’s better to play it safe.

If anyone asks me where is the most impressive of the places I’ve been visited, I absolutely say without hesitation it is the island of Zakynthos. Personally, I prefer this island than Santorini or other famous destinations. Surrounded by clear blue water, gently stretching white sand beaches, majestic cliffs standing in front of the sea, Zakynthos has long been known by tourists with famous attractions such as Navagio Shipwreck Beach, Cape of Keri, Blue Cave… So, what to do and how to plan a perfect budget trip to Zakynthos island (Zakynthos Greece)for the first-time? Referring Greece tourism, many of you often think of and often choose two popular destinations: Santorini and Athens. But indeed, if you miss this island, you will feel very regret. The wonderful feeling of driving on the pass roads with one side is spectacular cliffs and the other side is stretching white sand beaches. Wow, it can be said this is the paradise island on earth with breathtaking scenes of the sea, forests and mountains. And I also affirm that the sea here is very beautiful. I’m not a fan of swimming (I don’t know how to swim, LOL) but actually came here once and I just want to come back again. Therefore, it is not surprising that the airport on Zakynthos Island has directly connected flights with many other cities in the world and its airport is also much bigger, better than Santorini airport.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

If Santorini has only 2 famous tourist places with many hotels and restaurants are Oia and Fira village, Zakynthos Island has at least 4, 5 such places. I have been driving around the island and found that there are many stunning beaches here. You can not swimming in all these beaches, but I will suggest the most prominent beaches you should not miss when traveling to Zakynthos Island.

Zakynthos travel blog: Overview of Zakynthos Greece

The island of Zakynthos or more commonly called Zante also has another name as “Flower of the Orient” – “Il fioro di Levante” was named by the Venetians who once ruled this island. Due to its geographical location near an important sea waterway, so in the past the island was continuously occupied by many armies: Bizantine, Ottoman, Venice, France, England … Currently in the town center of Zakynthos, the island’s capital still exists many structures and architecture which were influenced by Venice style.

In the Bronze Age, Zakynthos was a supplier of raw materials for the metallurgy industry of the neighboring islands. During the early of the Middle Ages, Zakynthos was under the rule of Marco Sanudo, The ruler of Venice along with other islands such as Naxos and Paros. The island’s economy has relied heavily on fishing and livestock throughout the years. Today due to located near Athens, it has a lot of housing and attracts foreign tourists.

Zakynthos travel blog: When is the best time to visit Zakynthos island?

Like some other countries in the Mediterranean, Greece has a characteristic warm sunshine climate and is favored by nature with the advantage of beautiful weather all year round. You can go to the island of Zakynthos or other regions of Greece at any time of the year.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

However, it is advisable to go from April to October because from November to March next year is winter and often rainy. You should also consider whether to go in July or August or not because this is the peak tourist season, visitors flock to Greece very crowded and prices are also quite high compared to low season.

Zakynthos travel guide: How to get to Zakynthos Island?

Getting from athens to zakynthos.

From Athens airport, you can take a flight to the island of Zakynthos for about 45 minutes of flying. There are 3 flights a day during the peak season. Ticket price ranging from EUR45 to EUR90 / one way. You should find tickets in advance on Skyscanner or Google Flights , Kayak to compare prices and make schedule. Usually, the early morning and night flights are always cheaper than usual. I booked ticket before the departure date just 1 day, the ticket price was EUR50.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

Bus + Ferry

You must take both of these means of transportation if you want to getting from Athens to Zakynthos. First, you will first take a bus from downtown Athens to Kyllini town, then from Kyllini, you will take a ferry of Levante Ferries company to the island of Zakynthos with traveling time for 1 hour 15 minutes. This option usually takes about 6 hours of traveling because there are only 2 bus trips a day and each trip takes about 4 to 5 hours. And the total fare for one-way to Zakynthos for both vehicles above will cost around 40 euros (in the peak season). Refer bus from Athens to Kyllini port here .

Levante Ferries

For more information, you can visit this website on how to travel by ferry from Athens to Zakynthos . However, the information on this website is not very clear and viewers are easily misunderstood (like me). When I first looked for information for traveling, I saw I could take a bus or plane. After checking the fare on this website, the bus fare is EUR28,6 / one-way and traveling time about 4, 5 hours. Fortunately, I did not choose to combine bus + ferry option. After coming Zakynthos and talking with many local people, they said we had to take a ferry for 1.5 hours (EUR12) to get to the port town of Kyllini, after that you can take the bus from here to Athens, so the total cost will be EUR40 €.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

Summary, there are two ways to getting to from Athens to Zakynthos:

1. Airplane: Flight time 45 minutes and the airfare from EUR45 – EUR90 / one-way (you can choose 1 of 3 flights a day). To getting from the airport to town center you can take Zakynthos airport bus here .

2. Bus + Ferry: Traveling time takes about 6 hours and the fare EUR40 / one-way (bus EUR28,6 and 4 – 5 hours of traveling and ferry for EUR12 with ferry traveling time about 1,5 hours).

best time to visit zakynthos greece

So in my opinion, before you go, you should carefully compare the prices of the two options above and decide the way you will go. The day I went, the bus + ferry fare was EUR40 while if take the flight (Skyscanner), it was only EUR50, so I decided to fly for good.

Zakynthos travel guide: Getting around Zakynthos island

best time to visit zakynthos greece

Regarding getting around Zakynthos, I recommend you to rent a car or motorbike. The rental prices vary depending on the season. I traveled in August is the peak month when a car rental costs EUR80 – EUR120 per day including gasoline (in low season it costs around EUR40). As regards the price of renting a motorbike, I do not clear. You can book a rental online in advance and then pick up it after arriving or rent a car at some rental shops right at the airport. There are about 6, 7 different shops, only a few tens of meters when you exit the airport gate, you will see a lot of signs.

I also went for a round to checking price and service and chose SIXT , right across from the airport. I was extremely satisfied with this agent because the staff is very cute, polite and affordable compared to the neighboring agents. If you deposit EUR800 in advance, then it costs EUR80 for 1 day rental, if you deposit by credit card, the price is the same, but the money in account will be deducted and usually 2 weeks after the deposit date, it will be returned to your account. If you do not want to deposit too much, only about EUR200 – EUR300, the rental fee will increase to about EUR30 per day. This is optional for each visitor but I think you should bring a lot of euros not only to spend during your trip but also to deposit in these cases.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

If you want to rent a motorbike, you should go to the center to rent or rent right near the hotel for convenience. (In fact, there is no rental motorbike shop at the airport). But I am not sure if they will accept a Vietnamese driver’s license. In general, it depends on each shop, some easy, some difficult. But usually, the rental in center is always hot and runs out of motorbikes quickly compared to rent a motorbike in tourist places.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

Single bus ticket costs EUR1.3. Tickets can be used only once. Link to see more about bus schedules and bus fares in Zakynthos here .

There is a small note that almost visitor who comes here is easily confused as there is only one bus route from the airport to the center of Zakynthos (Zante). Then there are more buses from the center to the surrounding areas, so if you do not stay in the center of Zante, you still have to take 2 bus trips to get to your hotel. In addition, on the timetable of bus routes, often writes “ from Zakynthos to “… It means that it is from the central bus station to other locations.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

In addition, the bus in Zakynthos is extremely not punctual, often too late or too early, very erratic. Even if for the trip from the center to the airport, the driver may departs from 10 to 15 minutes early if he want and because this is a small island, the population is not crowded, so you usually wait about 45 minutes to 1 hour to catch a bus trip to other tourist attractions from the center. In my opinion, traveling by bus is very inconvenient.

I recommend you renting a car or motorbike because it is convenient, take the initiative in time and terrain in Zakinthos has a lot of passes. The distance between tourist places is quite far, for example from the Blue Cave to islands to watching turtles is about 45-50km. There is also no bus to those locations.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

Conclusion: Take a bus in Zakynthos costs EUR1.3/trip or rent a motorbike or car. In my opinion, the most convenient way to travel and saving money that you should rent a car or motorbike only for 1 day to travel to locations as far away as Shipwreck Beach or turtle island. 1 day you spend for boat tour, so you do not need to rent a car. I think 2 days is enough to explore this beautiful island.

Zakynthos blog: Where to stay in Zakynthos Greece?

On the east and south coasts of the island concentrating many budget hostels, family accommodations with reasonable prices while in the north of the town focuses on many upscale hotels and high-end resorts.

In my opinion, you do not need to stay in the center of Zakynthos town because there is really nothing special here besides its port and you will definitely have to come here without spending money if you book cruise tours to explore Blue Cave and Shipwreck Beach. In every hot tourist place has a lot of hotels and restaurants. However, I highly recommend you choose place to stay from the hilltop village of Ano Gerakari and downward, quite far above (the north of the island) and rare local people, as remote as the remote areas in Vietnam.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

During my visit, I stayed in Airbnb in Argassi village for EUR40/night. I’m not mention its name here because I think it is not a great place to stay to recommend you, although it owns a very good location with many surrounding restaurants. But the room is not good at all. The 3-bed room has the mattress as hard as stone, so I could not sleep at night. Here the sea is not very beautiful but very convenient with many shops, cafes, restaurants, also very bustling and offers all kinds of things you need. The downside is driving up to Navagio Shipwreck Beach and Blue Cave a bit far. Because you have to driving through many steep passes, it will take you 1.5 hours to driving from Argassi to Navagio Shipwreck Beach. In return, it’s quite close the airport (8km), the center (6km) and the tourist attractions in the south such as turtle island of Marathonisi, Kalamaki, Laganas beaches…

Some good hotels I have found which you can refer to. During my travel, all of these accommodations were full:

  • Costas Studio: Located right in the heart of Argassi for EUR60 / double room / night. ( Agoda.com or Booking.com )

Zakynthos travel blog: What and where to eat in Zakynthos island?

Like other Greek cities, Zakynthos focuses mainly on Italian or Greek restaurants. Traditional dishes usually include Kebab, Gyros, rabbit meat, cheese, seafood… The food is also delicious. The price of a single serving part at a restaurant will be between EUR7 – EUR12. A large hot plate of pasta is only around EUR8. If you want to eat cheaper, try gyros (it is prepared most often with pork or chicken, whilst beef, chicken, or lamb are wrapped in flatbread, adding some vegetables such as tamato, avocado, onion, mayones sauce and chips). The price is about EUR3 / part.

| cyprus travel blog

If you stay in Lagan, there are many cheap dishes to choose from. A quick walk down the street you will find souvlaki (Greek skewers including small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer) and pizza.

Greek Souvlaki

For a more authentic Greek culinary experience, you should head to Ionio Restaurant & Beach Bar (Address: Vasilikos 291 00, Greece) in Vasilikos to enjoy a dinner at sunset. From the view to the menu are all extremely attractive. Appetizers, Greek salads, bruschetta (grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with olive oil and salt), fried zucchini, and a small bottle of Ouzo (Greek traditional drink which is made from anise-flavored liquor produced from grape must (the remnants of wine-making)). There are also octopus, sardines, anchovies, squid, … that make you tired of eating.

best time to visit zakynthos greece

Regarding supermarket, Lidl will be the first choice. There is only one Lidl supermarket on the island. This supermarket is about 2km from the airport but there is no bus to there. Here the prices are reasonable, much cheaper than the shops in tourist destinations. Fruits, drinks, ice cream … even half the price compared to shops at tourist places. Price is around EUR1 – EUR2.

Nightlife in tourist spots is extremely vibrant. The bars open until 3am – 4am. Besides, the grocery stores sell all kinds of items you need for swimming such as slippers, hats, sunscreen, swimsuits, swimming floats. Souvenirs are also very diverse and beautiful. The prices are quite cheap, for example refrigerator stickers cost about EUR1/piece, bracelet, watch from EUR3 – EUR10, large towel from EUR5… One special thing here is that very few Asian tourists compared to other places I’ve been to, but westerners are extremely crowded. I saw there were more westerners than Santorini.

Zakynthos travel guide: What to do and where to go in Zakynthos Greece?

Navagio beach (shipwreck beach).

The most famous and also the most popular tourist attraction of the island is Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), a beautiful cove surrounded by spectacular vertical cliffs. Originally, this beach was known as Agios Georgios. Later, it was renamed Navagio, which in Greek means “shipwreck”. The reason Navagio was given this strange name is because in 1983, on a stormy night, the cargo ship MV Panagiotis was washed up and stranded on this beach. It is rumored that this is a smuggling vessel carrying prohibited items such as cigarettes, smuggled alcohol and even women. The ship was left to rust on the beach, since then the bay has been known as the Smugglers Cove.

This place is pristine and quite difficult to find, you can look up on Google Maps. Crossing the dirt and rocky road, park your car at the bottom and trekking up the rest of the walking path, the road is pretty easy to walk and cool. When you reach the Mizithres viewpoint, there will be no signs, it is also atop of cliff, so be careful while watching the scenery. Below there is a beach formed by a landslide during an earthquake.

You can rent a private boat to sailing around the turtle island of Marathonisi and southern caves in a day in Zakynthos. You can rent a boat from some different spots on the island, like at the Keri beach. Start looking for unseen turtles in the bay, sunbathe and snorkel, then continue floating on the sea. If you want the best view, go to the area near the Keri Caves with impressively steep limestone cliffs, the water below is crystal clear and perfect for swimming.

Marathonisi (Turtle Island)

This is an islet in Laganas Bay, about 1 mile from the center of Zakynthos Island and is in the marine ecosystem of the country that needs to be protected because there are many turtles and they often lay eggs here. To get here, you go to Laganas Beach and book a boat tour (costing EUR10 – EUR20 for 3-4 hours).

The tour will take you to the sea to watching turtles and then visit some prominent caves like Blue Caves above (but not as beautiful as blue caves) and then getting to the island to bathe. Gerakas Beach

On the island of Zakynthos, there are countless beaches such as Argassi, Tsiviili, Kalamaki, Laganas, Xigia… Because it is also the first-time I come here, I saw almost beaches have good reviews, so I visited almost them, but perhaps the beach I like the most is Gerakas Beach (18km from the center of Zakynthos). This beach defeats out all the beaches I’ve been to in Vietnam or other countries. It must be said that it is extremely beautiful with gentle waves, crystal water, smooth sand and also a place to be protected in the national oceanographic ecosystem.

Before exploring the beach, staff will give you a guide with regard to the terms of should and not to do, for example not throw out garbage, no swimming after sunset… There is also a rental service for umbrellas and sunloungers, price about 8-10 euros for 2 sunloungers and 1 umbrella. This beach is not too noisy and does not have too many restaurants and hotels like other beaches.

Xigia Beach

This beach is about 9km from the center of the island of Zakynthos. Following the coastal road from the center, you will see it. It is surrounded by a lot of cliffs. The short coastline with a bend part like Shipwreck beach, clear water. However, it smells a bit because this is where there are a lot of sulfur used as raw materials for cosmetics. There also is a vinyard with sweet and juicy fruits, they grow naturally without any care, but its fruit is as sweet as sugar. You notice when going down from the path where the stairs, it is right there.

Laganas Beach

The laganas sea is also quite clean and clear, from here you can take a boat to turtle island. Here, there is a strange thing than the other beaches is that there is a bridge like in the picture above spanning to a small rock. You just take pictures here, no need to swimming. After stop by, you will getting to the turtle island to take a bath there.

There are also some other beaches on the island of Zakynthos such as Tsilivi, Argassi, Kalamaki… but I saw these are rocky beaches, the water is not very clean, many restaurants and resorts surround them, so they quite crowded, hustle and bustle.

Filipoi Beach

This beach is just a 10-minute drive from Shipwreck Beach, on the way you will passing through a cute little town called Volimes, then down a windswept cliff to reach this rocky bay. You should come early in the morning around 8am or from 5pm onwards because it’s completely deserted, freely to explore, swim and take pictures with nature.

Porto Limnionas Beach

Another must-see place in Zante is the Porto Limnionas Beach. It is located on the west coast of the island and takes about 30 minutes by car from Laganas. It looks quite like a miniature lake surrounded by cliffs, but the water is exceptionally clear and not too deep. A private place to relax, immerse yourself in cool water without crowd and noise.

Korakonissi Beach

Korakonissi is one of the Greek beaches that possesses mysterious beauty. Best Things to do in Zakynthos, Greece (Ultimate Guide for First-Timers!)

Top Things to do in Zakynthos, Greece

Looking for the best things to do in Zakynthos, Greece?  This ultimate guide for first time visitors includes all the top activities, attractions, restaurants and hotels, plus everything you need to know to plan your visit to this stunning Ionian island!

Greece has always had a special place in my heart. The beautiful beaches, insanely clear blue waters, charming towns and ancient ruins all make it a top summer destination in Europe.  I’ve been to many of the popular islands in the Aegean Sea like Mykonos, Santorini and Crete so I wanted to explore a new region… Which is how I landed on the Ionian islands!

I could not have been happier with my decision as Zakynthos turned out to be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited.

Here are the best things to do in Zakynthos, Greece!

About Zakynthos

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is a beautiful Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, off the western coast of mainland Greece.  Zakynthos island is part of the Ionian Islands group, which includes several other islands such as Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Ithaca.

Olive groves, charming villages, pristine beaches, and limestone cliffs are some of the island’s most iconic features. Plus, Zakynthos is world-renowned for its stunning landscapes and breathtaking turquoise waters. In fact, Navagio Beach, with its iconic shipwreck, is one of the most photographed and famous beaches in the world… You’ve most likely seen photos of it all over social media!

So, whether you’re seeking natural wonders and adventurous activities, or simply a relaxing beach vacation with scenic beauty, Zakynthos has something to offer for every type of traveler.

How to Get to Zakynthos

Like many of the popular Greek islands, Zakynthos is accessible by both air and sea!

By Air: The most common way to reach Zakynthos is by flying into Zakynthos International Airport (ZTH), also known as Dionysios Solomos Airport. Direct flights are available from tons of European cities during the tourist season (spring to fall).  London, Manchester, Rome, Naples, Amsterdam, Geneva, Paris, Budapest and Berlin are just some of the cities with direct flights to Zakynthos!

Within Greece, you’ll find direct flights from Corfu, Kefalonia, and Athens.  So if you’re planning to visit some of the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea as well as the Zakynthos, you will have to connect in Athens.

We were traveling from Budapest and wanted to visit Zakynthos but the closest direct flight we could find was to Kefalonia. So we spent a few days in Kefalonia first and then flew to Zakynthos via Sky Express.

Our flight was definitely on “island time” — there were no gate agents at the time of our scheduled departure and no employees to ask for information sending all the passengers into a little bit of panic.  But around an hour later, a gate agent showed up and we boarded our quick 25 minute flight to Zakynthos!

By Sea: Zakynthos is connected to the mainland of Greece and other nearby islands by ferry services. Ferries operate from the port town of Kyllini on the Peloponnese mainland and the island of Kefalonia. The ferry journey from Kyllini to Zakynthos takes approximately one hour, and the journey from Kefalonia is about 1 hour 20 minutes. In Zakynthos, the main ferry port is in Zakynthos Town.

Before planning your journey, make sure to check the latest travel information, flight schedules, and ferry routes, especially if you are traveling during the off-peak season.

When is the Best Time to Visit Zakynthos?

The best time to visit Zakynthos is during the summer months of June through August.  The weather is hot (temperature around 77°F to 95°F) so it’s perfect for swimming and enjoying the beaches. Of course, this is the peak tourist seasons so expect crowds and make reservations in advance!

If you prefer to go outside of high season when it’s a bit less crowded, consider visiting during the shoulder months of April, May, September or October.  Just note that the temperatures may be more mild and some businesses may not be open for the season.

Winter time in Zakynthos is colder with temperatures ranging from 50°F to 59°F.  This is the low season so most tourist-related businesses will be closed.

How Many Days Should You Spend On Zakynthos?

The number of days you need in Zakynthos depends on your travel preferences, the activities you want to experience, and whether you prefer a relaxed or more packed itinerary.

Short Stay (2-4 Days): If you have limited time, a short stay of 2 to 4 days can still allow you to explore some of the best things to do in Zakynthos. You can visit iconic beaches like Navagio Beach, experience the Blue Caves, explore Zakynthos Town, and enjoy a few leisurely days.

Longer Stay (5-10 Days): A longer stay of 5 to 10 days will give you a more comprehensive experience of the island. You can explore even more beaches, visit traditional villages, take boat trips to hidden coves, and enjoy some cultural and historical sites.   You could even take day trips to neighboring islands or the mainland!

I visited Zakynthos in just a few days and felt like I got a good feel for the island and explored plenty of places.  However, it was quite fast paced and the beaches were so beautiful that I do wish I had an extra day or two to just relax!

How to Get Around Zakynthos

There are a number of ways to get around but renting a car is definitely the best option if you plan to explore different parts of the island.

Car Rentals: Renting a car is one of the most popular and flexible ways to explore Zakynthos. Many international and local car rental agencies operate on the island, and you can pick up a rental vehicle at Zakynthos International Airport or in major towns like Zakynthos Town. The road network on Zakynthos is generally well-maintained, making it easy to navigate.

We rented a car and were able to pick it up from the airport when we arrived.  I recommend making a car reservation in advance during the peak tourist season, and make sure to reserve an automatic car if you prefer it!

Driving in Zakynthos was very easy and allowed us to explore so many different parts of the island. It gave us the freedom to visit remote beaches, villages, and attractions at our own pace!

Scooters: Scooters or mopeds are a popular choice for short-distance travel on the island. Many rental agencies offer scooters and mopeds, and you can find them in Zakynthos Town and tourist areas.

ATVs/Quad Bikes: ATVs or quad bikes are also an option for those who want to explore off-road areas and are just going short distances.

Taxis: Taxis are available in Zakynthos Town and other major towns. They are convenient for short trips or transfers to specific locations. You can find taxis at designated taxi stands or arrange for one through your accommodation.

Best Things to do in Zakynthos, Greece

Zakynthos coastline seen from the boat trip

This is hands down one of the top things to do in Zakynthos!  If you only do one activity, make it a boat tour because it’s the best way to see a lot of the island in just one day.

Plus, taking advantage of boat tours allows you to discover hidden beaches, sea caves, and scenic spots around the island that are inaccessible by land.

We opted for a private boat trip on a small boat so we could make our own itinerary. If we liked a certain spot, we could stay longer, and if we felt anywhere was too crowded… Off we went to a more secluded cove.  There are lots of boat tour companies offering these excursions so I highly recommend going the private route if you prefer to go off the beaten path and away from the crowds!

We did an all day tour; starting around 9am in Zakynthos Town and returning around 5pm.  We went around the entire island and spent the day swimming in little coves, exploring sea caves, and relaxing on secluded beaches.

We went with Alegria charter which was a comfortable boat that fit up to 10 people and included a captain, hostess, towels, snorkeling equipment, snacks and a bottle of wine.

Blue Caves, Zakynthos

One of the most well-known spots on the island is the Blue Caves, a series of sea caves with mesmerizing blue waters. The caves are only accessible by boat, and the sunlight reflecting off the water creates a magical blue hue.

We had so much fun swimming and floating in the calm turquoise waters and exploring the sea caves.  The water is so clear you can see the bottom, plus lots of colorful fish!

Aerial view of Navagio Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, Greece

Navagio Beach

Visiting Navagio Beach, also called Shipwreck Beach, is one of the most popular things to do in Zakynthos. The beach is surrounded by towering cliffs and is accessible only by boat. The shipwreck, which gave the beach its name, adds a very unique touch to the beautiful scenery.

The shipwreck has been there since 1980 when the ship got caught in a storm.  The rumored story of the ship is that it was smuggling illegal cigarettes from Turkey to Italy. The Greek captain decided he wanted a larger cut of the profit and held the Italian crew-members at gunpoint… Until the storm came and their smuggled loot was spoiled in the wreck!

In recent years, the beach has had some rockslides due to seismic activity causing portions of the beach to be closed.  It was fully closed to the public in the summer of 2023, but it may re-open in 2024 with some visitor limitations.

We visited Navagio Beach as one of the first stops on our boat day in hopes to beat the crowds.  I was excited to visit this famous beach and eager to see if it would live up to expectations (as sometimes locations made famous by social media can be disappointing in real life!).

Aerial view of Navagio Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, Greece

Arriving to Navagio Beach, we learned that we were not quite early enough to beat the crowds… The cove already had plenty of boats and the beach was dotted with people. Even so, I didn’t find myself disappointed… In fact, quite the opposite!

I was totally awestruck by the beauty of the cove and the dramatic sheer cliffs towering above it. And the shipwreck was equally impressive in size!  It was truly a unique beach that is 100% worth seeing.

And even more shocking was the color of the water. I was assuming that the photos of Navagio Beach had been edited making the water appear more blue than in real life.  Boy, was I wrong!

The color of the water is truly astounding and I don’t think I’ve ever seen water that blue… It literally looks like Gatorade Cool Blue!

While it seemed that many people were posted up on the beach for the day, we spent just under an hour enjoying the scenery, swimming in the water and taking photos.  Then, we were ready to move on from the crowds and explore more secluded parts of the island!

Note: we arrived just after 10am and the majority of the beach was still covered in shade due to the towering cliffs. If you want to experience the beach in full sun, I would recommend going between 12-1pm.  Just be aware that this is also the most crowded time of the day!

Navagio Shipwreck Beach

Navagio Viewpoint

While the only way to access Navagio Beach is by boat, you can still take in the views of Shipwreck Beach from the cliffs above…. 650 feet above to be exact!

The drive to the viewpoint is about 45 minutes from Zakynthos Town and is a very popular destination.  There is an official viewing platform that looks over the beach and often has a long line of tourists waiting their turn to take a photo.

After the official viewing platform, there is a rough trail that leads to more unobstructed views of the beach. However, the trail is not maintained and there seems to be conflicting information on whether tourists are allowed to access it. The cliffs can be very dangerous — several tourists have fallen while attempting to take photos — so use extreme caution!

Mizithres beach, Zakynthos

This may have been my favorite stop of our boat day and is definitely one of the best things to do in Zakynthos!

Located below the impressive Keri cliffs, “Mizithres” refers to a pair of unique rock formations located on the western coast of the island. These striking geological formations are known for their distinct appearance and are popular among visitors for both their natural beauty and the panoramic views they offer.

The small beaches surrounding the rock formation are only accessible by boat which means that they usually aren’t too crowded. Some boat excursions stop here, but you can also rent your own boat from nearby Keri Beach.  No skippers license is required and it costs around 80€ for a four hour rental.

If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with finding the most beautiful blue waters around the world… And Mizithres beach earned a spot very high on my list of the bluest waters I’ve seen!

Spending the afternoon floating in the water, swimming to different beaches and taking in the magical scenery, I was in total heaven.

Keri Cliffs

Keri Cliffs Viewpoint

Mizithres are situated near the village of Keri, on the southwestern tip of Zakynthos. The location is known for its rugged coastline and dramatic cliffs so seeing Mizithres from above is just as impressive!

Many people opt to watch the sunset from the Keri Lighthouse Restaurant where you can take in the views of Mizithres while enjoying some wine and dinner.

Zakynthos Town

Explore Zakynthos Town

Zakynthos Town, also known as Zante Town, is the capital and main port of the island. The town is home to historic attractions, as well as lots of restaurants, shops, and nightlife.  It’s also a departure point for most boat tours and excursions so it’s always bustling with activity.

In Zakynthos Town, you can explore the Venetian Castle, which offers panoramic views of the island. The castle has a rich history, and wandering through its ruins provides a glimpse into Zakynthos’ past.

And, Solomos Square is a central gathering place and a hub of activity. It is named after the Zakynthian national poet Dionysios Solomos. In the square, you’ll find the statue of Solomos and the Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos.

Floating in the sea at Nobelos beach club

Spend the Day at Nobelos

Nobelos Seaside Lodge & Bio Restaurant is a hotel, restaurant, and beach club all in one. It’s located on the northeast side of the island and has an ideal position on the coast line looking over a little islet — right next to Agios Nikolaos Beach!  The hotel has just four rooms so bookings must be made well in advance.

We spent the day at Nobelos beach club and also dined at the restaurant for lunch. Situated on a scenic cove, the beach club setting is just magical!

I spent most of the day swimming in the cove, floating in the calm waters, and snorkeling along the coastline.  The water is so clear that you can see straight to the bottom and we were able to spot lots of colorful fish and even an octopus!

Our lunch was equally spectacular.  The menu features traditional Greek specialities and fresh seafood — everything was well-presented and so delicious!

17 Best Things to Do in Zakynthos, Greece In 2024

Written By: Dejan

Updated On: March 14, 2024

When planning a trip to the Greek islands, put the island of Zakynthos, Greece on your list. This gem in the Ionian Sea is a must-visit destination; from the iconic Shipwreck Beach, accessible only by boat, to the mesmerizing Blue Caves, ideal for snorkeling and exploring marine life, Zakynthos offers a lot of unforgettable experiences. There are so many things to do on Zakynthos that you’ll want to spend at least three days enjoying the island’s attractions. If you have more time, even better!

Zakynthos Island, also widely known as Zante is located in the Ionian Islands in northwest of Greece. This name duality stems from the island’s Venetian past, where it was referred to as ‘Zante,’ a name that has persisted, especially in English-speaking countries.

Best to do in Zakynthos, Greece

Top things to do in Zakynthos Greece

We will show you the best way to explore Zakynthos Island, from visiting its traditional villages, savoring authentic Greek cuisine, and even witnessing the endangered Caretta-caretta turtles in their natural habitat. Whether you’re an adventure seeker like us, a history buff, or simply looking to relax on pristine beaches, Zakynthos will serve up a holiday filled with diverse and enriching experiences. The best way to get around Zakynthos is by renting a car. You can compare prices here at RentalCars.om

The beaches and natural beauty of this Ionian Island capture the imagination of travelers seeking a vacation to the Greek Islands. Zakynthos is known for its nightlife in towns like Laganas but is also known for its traditional villages such as Alykes and Vasilikos. Let’s not forget its crucial role in wildlife conservation, being a sanctuary for the endangered Loggerhead turtles.

1. Blue Caves – Amazing scenery

best things to do in zakynthos greece blue caves

One of the best things to do in Zakynthos is to visit the Blue Caves. These natural arches have been carved out by erosion and are famous for the vivid color of blue water in its deepest hollows. We recommend getting out early in the morning for the best light and to avoid the crowds. Going snorkeling at the Blue Caves is one thing you do not want to miss. You will see what we mean once you dip your face in the deep blue azure water and see what is below.

You can hire a small private boat or take a tour of the many famous sites along the coast where you can go swimming and snorkeling. The fact that the Blue Caves are only accessible by boat should be reason enough to add it to your itinerary.

*Note : – cruises around the island last around 9-10 hours, so you be prepared for a long and beautiful day* Book your tour here. Most boat tours leave from Agios Nikolaos Harbor.

2. Navagio Beach – Shipwreck Beach

best things to do in zakynthos Greece shipwreck beach

Located on the west coast of Zakynthos, Navagio Beach is a cove surrounded by white sea cliffs that are 900 feet tall. The famous Navagio Beach (Which means shipwreck in Greek) has become the symbol of the island and is one of the top things to do in Zakynthos. The amazing view gives me the chills.

This secluded beach is famous for its shipwreck, the Panagiotis, which adds a touch of mystery and intrigue to the picturesque setting. It is one of the most beautiful scenes in the Greek Islands, surrounded by towering high cliffs and turquoise waters. Accessible only by boat, Navagio Beach feels like it is a little undiscovered gem – when you look at it from the sea. In truth, it is anything but undiscovered. You may also want to read: Is Greece Expensive, a complete guide to costs for travel in Greece.

Unfortunately, as of the time of this writing, Navagio Beach is closed, and you cannot go on the sandy beach itself. You can still enter the bay by boat, check out the shipwreck, and take photos, which I would prefer to do anyway. Who wants to stand on a small beach with a bunch of people getting in your way? You can book a boat tour to see Navagio Shipwreck Beach here.

The closure was due to rockfall from several small earthquakes and was put in as a safety measure. However, I also think it is an environmental issue as well, as in the past, there was overcrowding on the beach.

Shipwreck Beach is still a stop on almost all boat tours and is often combined with the Blue Cave. We recommend booking a boat tour that visits in the early morning or later in the afternoon so you are not crammed in there with a bunch of other boats. Most tour boats leave from Agios Nikolaos harbor.

3. View of Navagio Beach – Shipwreck Beach

best things to do in zakynthos greece Navagio Beach lookout

The best photo opportunity of Navagio Beach is from the lookout from the top of the cliffs. This is the classic view that has been used to market Zakynthos Island and one you have probably seen on Instagram. Because of this, you can imagine the number of people who want to see it from this angle, and you would be right. If you visit Zante Island in high season, you will be standing in line with a bunch of other people just to get to the platform for the view.

You should also be aware of a couple of things. There is only a small stand selling coffee and drinks by the platform and no bathrooms. When you get to the platform, you will have to fight for a view of the Navagio shipwreck with all the selfie-taking tourists and then crane your neck to get the postcard view above. Be careful not to drop your phone or camera as well. This view can be accessed by car or a van from Zante Town or Alyke. It’s crowded in the high season, but in the off-season, this place is a wonder of nature that gives chills to the bone.

4. Snorkeling

things to do in Zakynthos Greece Snorkeling

Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities on the island of Zakynthos (football is also popular with a professional football club), and it is one of the most exciting and adventurous things a visitor can do in Zante.

From absolute beginner to experienced divers, you can set out on an adventure to explore the depths of the Ionian Sea in the Zakynthos Marine Park. The crystal clear waters of the gulf that surrounds the main island of Zakynthos are pristine. There are many sea caves that lure you inside for some of the most unique snorkeling experiences you’ll ever have.

If you aren’t up for snorkeling, you can also book a glass-bottom boat tour that will allow you to take in the beauty of the turquoise waters and what lies below.

5. Loggerhead Sea Turtles of Laganas Bay

things to do in zakynthos snorkel with sea turtles

The island of Zante is one of the best places in the world to find the famous Loggerhead sea turtle. (Caretta-Carreta Turtle) The loggerhead sea turtle is endangered, but Zakynthos is a nesting area for them, and they lay their eggs on many of its beaches.

Note: Tourists are prohibited from visiting places where turtles lay eggs as Zante authorities protect them. (Kalamaki Beach is one of the beaches where the turtles lay their eggs, and when they are there, Kalamaki Beach is off-limits. The region between Laganas and Kalamaki Beach also has some restrictions.

You don’t need to see them laying eggs through; this giant gentle turtle can be seen swimming at Laganas Bay. If you book a snorkeling or diving trip on Zakynthos, you can see the Caretta-Caretta turtle. Trust me, the enjoyment when you see one of those will give you goosebumps. Book this boat trip to Laganus on a glass bottom boat to spot turtles.

As we suggest, with all water activities and wildlife, do your research and ensure you go with a company that practices safe snorkeling with wildlife. If you see a ton of boats pulling up alongside a turtle and everyone jumping in at once, just tell your boat captain that you don’t agree with this and to move on. The last thing we should do is cause unnecessary stress to any animal.

6. Marathonisi – Turtle Island

Marathonisi - Turtle Island in Zakynthos Greece

Marathonisi is an islet just off the southern coast of Zakynthos and has one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the region. It is also known as Turtle Island as it looks like the shape of a turtle when you approach from Keri or Marathia. The island is also home to the Loggerhead Turtle, and the beach itself is only accessible for the first 3 meters from the shore. You will see it roped off beyond that, as it is their nesting ground. This private boat tour takes you on a luxury cruise to Turtle Island, Keri Caves, and Mizithres.

The islet is located in the Marine Park, and the blocked-off sections are monitored. The best way to get to the island is to take the Taxi Boat that shuttles from the beach to Marathonisi Island, which is about 15 minutes. The other options are renting your own boat or jumping on an organized tour. Whichever way you choose, you will be glad you added this island to your trip.

7. Keri Caves

what to do in zakynthos keri caves

Just outside of Zakynthos Town are the Keri Caves. The Keri Caves are a series of sea caves located along the island’s southwestern coast. Their extraordinary beauty and crystal-clear waters make them a popular spot for tourists. These caves are accessible only by sea, and many visitors explore them via tour boat that include opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. Combine the beauty of the underwater world with white sea cliffs reaching up from the clear azure waters, makes for a spectacular day trip.

Like most popular snorkeling spots in Zakynthos, you can also go via a glass-bottom boat . The waters are so clear; these are very popular on the island. A Keri Caves tour stops at Turtle Island to spot sea turtles as well.

You can even rent a boat if you feel comfortable to explore around the island at your own pace.

9. Keri Beach

Keri Beach on Zakynthos Island in Greece

Keri Beach is another popular beach that is located in the village of Keri, in the southwestern part of the island, this picturesque beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and pebble-lined shores, making it a paradise for swimmers and snorkelers.

The charm of Keri Beach lies in its peaceful setting, away from the bustling crowds, where visitors can unwind and soak in the Mediterranean sun. The beachfront is dotted with traditional tavernas where you can savor authentic Greek dishes while enjoying views of the Ionian Sea.

This is the jumping off point to the nearby Keri Caves and Marathonisi Island which are accessible by boat tours. For those interested in a more leisurely experience, renting a sunbed and simply relaxing by the azure waters is a delightful option.

10. Keri Lighthouse

Keri Lighthouse is a remarkable landmark located in the picturesque village of Keri, on the southwestern tip of Zakynthos. This historic lighthouse stands as a beacon, offering some of the best views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding limestone cliffs.

While there, you can enjoy some delicious Greek cuisine at the Keri Lighthouse Restaurant. This popular eatery is renowned for its strategic location at one of the island’s most scenic vantage points, offering panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding landscapes The Keri Lighthouse Restaurant terrace is a perfect spot for a meal or a drink, especially during sunset when the sky and sea are painted in vibrant hues.

11. Gerakas Beach

Gerakas Beach is located on the southern tip of the Vasilikos peninsula in the National Marine Park. This sandy beach has plenty of amenities, such as sunbeds and umbrellas for rent.

The beach’s proximity to Vasilikos makes it one of the most popular beaches to visit and it has easy access to a variety of tavernas and cafes, where one can enjoy local Greek cuisine.

Plus, the calm waters and range of depths make the Keri Caves suitable for both beginner and experienced divers.

13. Banana Beach

things to do in Zakynthos Greece Banana Beach

The golden sandy beach of Banana Beach is the longest beach in Zakynthos. Located in the Vasilikos region, Banana Beach is easily accessible to make a day out at the beach, which is full of sun, sea, and sand. Its sheer size ensures there’s always a spot on the soft, golden sands, making it perfect for families and groups.

There are activities and water sports like jet skiing and parasailing, as well as more relaxed options such as sunbed rentals and paddleboarding. The beach area is dotted with a variety of restaurants and beach bars, making it the perfect place to spend the day. Plus, the clear, inviting waters of the Ionian Sea make it a great spot for swimming and snorkeling.

14. Porto Limnionas Beach

things to do in Zakynthos Porto Limnionas Beach

There’s no shortage of scenes of white limestone cliffs plunging into crystal clear waters along the coast of Zakynthos. And Porto Limnionas is one of its stars. Porto Limniona is considered the best swimming spot in Zakynthos, which was once undiscovered.

This secluded cove on the west coast is yet another place with calm azure waters. Impressive rock formations and steep cliffs surround this popular snorkeling and swimming area. And there are chairs with beach umbrellas to rent.

With the Limnionas Tavern nearby, visitors can enjoy local Greek cuisine while soaking in the tranquil views over Porto Limnonas. More people are starting to learn about Porto Limnionas beach, but that doesn’t detract from its beauty. However, Porto Limnionas Beach is not large with only a small beach area, so it does get crowded.

15. Horseback Riding

There are plenty of outdoor activities on Zante, including horse riding on the beach (highly recommended!) The Laganas horseriding center offers rides through sand dunes, forests, and the beach, with an unforgettable experience swimming with horses in the Ionian Sea.

16. Laganas Beach Party

Fun things to do in Zante Laganas Beach Party

We mentioned that Zakynthos is known for its nightlife. The island of Zante is not called “The Party Island” for a  reason. The central part that gets this attribute is a resort area called Laganas. A vast number of clubs, bars, and restaurants are placed here for a reason. The area attracts a hip and youthful crowd with its mix of international DJs, lively bars, and nightclubs right on the sand.

This is the epicenter of all the parties, with tasty cocktails flowing. The crowds rush to hit the strip every night from 10 p.m. and party in packed clubs until morning. The vibe and energy pulse in every direction, and it is easy to go barhopping all night long. The beachfront is lined with venues offering a variety of music and themes, ensuring there’s something for every taste where guests can enjoy cocktails and snacks under the stars.

The themed parties can get pretty wild where they pour neon colors on people, bathe in vast amounts of white foam, and the clubs put on special fireworks displays almost three times a week. So you get the idea of the atmosphere and vibe you can experience on Zante here.

17. Agios Nikolaos Beach, aka St Nicolas Beach

Ideal for families and couples alike, Agios Nikolaos provides excellent facilities, including sunbeds, umbrellas, and a variety of beachfront tavernas serving delicious Greek cuisine.

The beach is also a hub for water sports enthusiasts, offering activities such as snorkeling and diving, with dive centers available for equipment rental and lessons. The nearby port offers boat trips to the famous Shipwreck Cove and Blue Caves, making Agios Nikolaos a convenient starting point for exploring Zakynthos’ natural wonders.

It is not a surprise that Zakynthos is one of the best islands in Greece for a party, and at night St Nicolas Beach is another party beach on Zakynthos.

18. Korakonisi Ridge

The island of Zakynthos also has many historical attractions. The rich history of Zakynthos dates from 1600. B.C. One of the most famous people who lived in Zakynthos was Dionysios Solomos. He was a native of Zakynthos and Greece’s national poet, who wrote the Greek national anthem.

Late Spring (May to Early June) : This period offers pleasant weather with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). The island is less crowded, making it perfect for exploring the natural beauty and attractions in relative tranquility. The sea temperatures are also warming up, which is suitable for swimming and water activities.

Early Summer (Late June to Early July) : Early summer is ideal for those wanting to enjoy the warm weather without the peak season crowds. The temperatures range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). This time is great for beach activities, water sports, and exploring the island’s outdoor attractions.

Ultimate Travel Guide to the Island of Zakynthos in 2021

Your Guide To Greece

April 20, 2020

zakynthos

Zakynthos, which is also known as Zante, is one of the bigger islands you will visit in Greece. It has a lot to offer to tourists with wide variety of attractions, including places of historical significance and some of the most unique beaches in Europe.

While some of its attractions take you back into the history of the country with breathtaking ancient structures and places, some of the other attractions like beaches offer stunning views and a relaxing experience. Not to mention, there’s also a lot to see when it comes to the marine life diversity of the island, particularly including the Caretta Caretta sea turtles and Monachus seals.

No matter what kind of traveler you are, Zakynthos has something incredible to offer to you. But the only way to get the most out of your visit is to know about the island and its attractions before you visit it, so that you don’t have to waste any time in exploring the beauty it has to offer.

Best Time to Visit Zakynthos

Greece has Mediterranean-like temperatures. The winters are usually mild, but the summers are rather hot. However, the best of climates can be experienced during spring and autumn, with the temperatures generally in the range of 10 to 30 degrees Celsius.

While the winters aren’t too cold, there’s a possibility of heavy rainfall and sometimes even snowfall. As far as islands like Zakynthos are concerned though, snowfall is very limited and usually not a problem. But the main culprit may be the winds, as they often get too strong and are known for ruining the best of travel plans.

A summer in Zakynthos is hard to beat, though. The already year-round beautiful beaches are at their best. Swimming, water sports and enjoying the sunsets, all offer a unique experience during the summer.

That said, summer is also the time that attracts large crowds to Zakynthos, so you may not get the kind of quiet and peace you may be expecting. If you fancy the chance of meeting people and even celebrities from different parts of the world though, there may not be a better time to visit Zakynthos for you.

How to Reach Zakynthos?

There are flights directly to Zakynthos from most major cities in Europe. You actually land in the southern part of the island not too far away from the Kalamaki town, but it doesn’t take too long to reach any resort on the island you want as it’s easy to get around with plenty of transportation options.

Cars and buses take you to Killini, a port located on the east Peloponnese coast. You will also get to see some of the mainland Greece on the way.

From Killini you would have ferries that will land you right into the town of Zakynthos. The availability of these ferries is usually never a problem when you’re visiting during the season.

Where to Stay in Zakynthos?

Before we get to the specific hotel recommendations, let us give you a little overview of the different parts of the island as they differ quite a bit in terms of the experience they have to offer.

This is one of the better parts of the island, with a large part of it being just huge mountains that also feature some of the most unique luxury villas you may have ever seen around the northern cape.

It’s the busiest and most developed part of Zakynthos, with the development of Laganas taking a lot away from its beauty. There are turtle beaches there though located between scenic peninsulas that tourists find to be worth a visit.

It’s another part of the Zakynthos town with developed sprawls, but still has a lot of beauty and nature to offer on either end.

This part is similar to the north with beautiful mountains, and offers an amazing sunset point in the Cliffs of Keri.

Now that we know a bit about the different parts of Zakynthos, let’s discuss some specific hotels to stay in.

Recommended Lodging Options in Zakynthos

  • Strada Marina : The biggest selling points of this hotel include its location being very near to the port, and its amazing sea and mountain views. There’s a seasonal pool garden and a pool on the terrace that offers views of the Bohali Hill, Solomos Square and the Port of Zakynthos.
  • Palatino Hotel: If you’re looking for some quiet, there may not be many better options than this Byzantine-style building with a somewhat traditional feel. It’s also just a short walk away from the beachfront. The interior is nothing to complain about as well, but the most highlighting feature of the rooms is the mountains and the Ionian Sea that they overlook. It’s probably also the best mid-range hotel in Zakynthos.
  • Mediterranean Beach Resort: This is another hotel that resembles more of a traditional Ionian village than a luxury 5-star resort. However, it could be a unique experience for those with a taste for traditional-styled interior. The facilities are truly 5-star, you would get stunning ocean views from pretty much every part of the resort, there’s a sea-facing pool, and a sandy beach as well. Mediterranean Beach Resort is one of the best luxury hotels in Zakynthos.
  • Cactus Hotel Zakynthos: This is the best budget hotel in Zakynthos because while the prices are budget-friendly, the facilities and comfort is almost luxury-like. It’s a self-catered accommodation for up to four people, but you have all the facilities like air conditioning, private bathroom, sauna, balcony, kitchen area and a dining area. There’s even an outdoor swimming pool. The views aren’t the best you can get but it’s conveniently located to visit the popular attractions.

The Airbnb Option

While not the most popular option, renting an Airbnb may not only help you save a few bucks but also help you find you something well-suited for your needs. You do need to research well in advance though, so that you can rent a Zakynthos villa that’s exactly how you want, at a price that’s well within your budget.

Many villas come in a classy and elegant feel, with some of them offering great views as well.

How Long to Stay in Zakynthos?

Well, it depends on whether you’re just after the natural beauty and amazing views, or would like to experience the Greek history and culture as well. The amount of time you would like to spend on the popular beaches of the island is another factor to take into account as well.

That said, if you want to experience everything of the best the island has to offer, you would want to spend at least three nights there. However, there are definitely many tourists that also spend five nights or more in the island. After all, Zakynthos is a large island with a lot to explore and experience.

If you’re just there for the beaches or the nightlife though, then even two nights would suffice.

Things to Do in Zakynthos

Zakynthos offers a surprisingly large variety of things to do and experience for an island. Ranging from fascinating sailing experiences to exploring hidden caves, and spending time under the sun on beautiful beaches to experiencing the ancient monasteries, Zakynthos indeed has a lot to offer.

However, if you’re only there for a few days, you will prioritize well in order to make sure you don’t miss the best things to do.

Shipwreck Beach

The Navagio Beach, popularly known as the Shipwreck beach, is one of the top attractions of Zakynthos. It’s one of the most unique beaches in the world, but the popularity also means that it would be hard to find it without a large crowd.

Tourists have to take a boat ride to reach the Shipwreck beach. However, many tourists like to turn it into a full-day boat tour that allows them to explore another popular tourist attraction in the Blue Caves.

While you can reach the Shipwreck beach in only around 45 minutes, a full-day boat tour would allow you to visit Blue Caves, which is a short bus up the cliffs from the Shipwreck beach. You would get some great views of the Shipwreck beach from the top.

Needless to say, you will be able to spend a good bit of time at these attractions with a full-day tour, as it lasts for around 8 hours. The cost usually tends to be around $50 per person.

As we just mentioned above, the Blue Caves are another popular tourist attraction, forming the east of Cape Skinari and boasting of incredible natural beauty from their centuries of erosion. The deepest parts of the caves make you feel as if you have entered a different world, with the shades of deep blue water offering a unique experience in themselves.

If you go there in the morning, the light reflects off the deep blue water to offer some of the most unique photo opportunities you may have ever had.

As we said above, you will have to book a full-day bout tour if you want to visit both the Blue Caves and the Shipwreck beach.

The Keri Caves make another great tourist attraction along with the “The Arch”, especially if you’re interested in scuba diving. There are many scuba dive operators that would take you to the Keri Caves as part of their scuba diving tour.

One of the most incredible moments when scuba diving there is when you find the loggerhead turtles swimming around in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

Keri Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Keri is one of the best spots to see the sunset with the sunshine washing over the beautiful cliffs in the distance and offering you another opportunity to take some of the best pictures of your life.

Marathonisi Island

Also known as the Turtle Island, the Marathonisi Island is one of the few places in the world where you get to see Caretta-Caretta sea turtles in big numbers. The government has been making a lot of efforts to protect their habitat, but you’re allowed to take a closer look at them by using the snorkeling equipment available there to get under the water.

Zakynthos Marine Park

The Zakynthos Marine Park is built to protect the more vulnerable parts of the island’s ecosystem. However, it’s also a place where you can see a huge variety of birds, reptiles and other types of wildlife, including the Caretta-Caretta turtles and the Monachus-Monachus seals as well.

Byzantine Museum

If you’re a lover of art, the Byzantine Museum is a no-brainer for you, especially given that it only costs €8 to enter. It features a wide variety of art pieces, with descriptions in both Greek and English.

Nautical Museum

If history interests you – and maritime history in particular – then visiting the Nautical Museum is going to be a fascinating experience for you. It features maritime history from as back as the 1600s, and you would learn a lot of things you will find fascinating.

Ranging from watercolors revealing how shipping progressed over the centuries, to the artworks that give a glimpse of the existence of the Byzantine ships right from their beginning to 1453, the year in which they were replaced by their modern counterparts.

Venetian Fountain

The Venetian fountain is another way to go back into the Greece history. Although you don’t find a lot more than an ancient fountain today, you can still see the signs of the long passages that existed in the past and used to supply water to the entire city.

Again, although there’s not a lot to explore now, if you observe the details of the structures closely, they will reveal to you the marvelous history of the ancients that the island once had.

Zakynthos Venetian Castle

Here’s some more fascinating Greek history for you, but this time sprinkled with some present-day beauty that will leave you stunned, especially if you’re into ancient things.

Located in Mpohalis city, this castle used to be the capital of the island centuries ago. It was even demolished in the year 1480 but to preserve a place of great historical significance, it was renovated in 1514.

You will find a lot of ancient Greek history here, in the form of the old prison system, how gunpowder came into existence, the ancient fortress and its premises, and also the ruins of the ancient churches that stand as testimony of the country’s rich history.

The views from top of the castle make for some great diversity in your overall experience, too.

Anafonitria Monastery

While not the most popular tourist attraction, many tourists definitely find it to be worth a visit, especially those that can’t get enough of the Greek history and culture.

It’s actually a holy place and considered a part of the tour of the island. It not only tells you a lot about the Greek history and culture, but also has a lot of stunning views surrounding it that will keep you occupied for quite some time too.

Party animals love to visit Laganas, as it is home to many different clubs and attracts tourists looking to experience the nightlife of the Zakynthos island.

Different clubs cater to different types of audiences. The Kalamaki beach is also only 5 km away from Laganas, and these 5 km is also a long stretch of beach and a lot of nature to see.

Zakynthos Town

Zakynthos town is the perfect blend of modern development and ancient, historical buildings. While there has been a lot of development recently, it still manages to retain its cultural feel with its classic historical buildings boasting of Venetian architecture.

There are quite a few things you can do here as well if you have some extra time on your hand, such as visiting museums, exploring the architecture, shopping around and more.

Zakynthos Beaches

While the Zakynthos island is no short of beaches, some are definitely more interesting than the others. We have already discussed the Shipwreck beach in detail, but let us quickly mention a few other notable ones as well.

  • Kalamaki Beach: It’s hard to define the beauty of this beach, but visitors often say they have not been to many better beaches in their life. With crystal clear waters and uniquely golden colored sand coupled with some amazing views, it makes for a great relaxing beach experience away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
  • Gerakas Beach: With clear sandy waters and see turtles and their eggs resting on the surface, the Gerakas beach makes for a unique beach experience both for couples and families.
  • Porto Limnionas Beach: If swimming and cliff jumping amuse you, then the Porto Limnionas Beach would be an excellent experience for you. The clean, deep waters, incredible sunset views, and the ability to do swimming and snorkeling, there’s a lot to experience here as well.

Getting Around Zakynthos

While there’s usually no shortage of public transport in the Zakynthos island, it’s definitely not the most recommended way of getting around the island, especially if you value your time or only plan to spend two to three days there.

The public transport is often far from reliable, with everything running according to the “Greek time”. However, there’s no shortage of taxis as well that are a much more reliable way of moving around the island, and so is renting a car or a motorbike.

If you don’t have a lot of time on your hand but you would like to visit most of the major attractions, then renting a car is your best bet. This is especially because unlike many of the other islands of Greece, Zakynthos is much bigger, so if you don’t rent a car, you will end up spending a lot of time just getting to the various attractions and be left with less time to explore them.

The second-best way to explore the island of Zakynthos is on a motorbike or ATV, particularly if you’re single or a couple. In fact, if you don’t mind riding your way all through the island, a motorbike or ATV would actually turn out to be a better option than a car as well.

This is because many roads in the island are rather narrow, and a car won’t be able to get you through them.

Parking is going to be another advantage on a moto, as it’s going to be much easier to park than a car.

You wouldn’t have Uber and Lyft in Zakynthos, but there are plenty of taxis to get you around. However, you need to negotiate the fare before starting your ride, as it’s not uncommon to get ripped off by taxi drivers there.

Top Photo Spots

Zakynthos has an abundance of stunning, breathtaking views that make for some of the best photo spots you may have ever seen. There are more than a few picturesque places in Zakynthos, but let us quickly take a look at some of the best ones.

  • The Lake of Keri
  • The Keri Lighthouse
  • Shipwreck beach
  • Agios Sosti
  • Kalamaki beach
  • Porto Limnionas Beach

A Final Word

This is pretty much everything you need to know to get the most out of your trip to the island of Zakynthos. And as you can see, there’s a lot to explore, see and experience in Zakynthos.

If you have already visited some of the more popular islands like Santorini or Mykonos , then you don’t have many better options than Zakynthos.

If you have any questions about visiting or exploring Zakynthos, feel free to let us know in the comments below.

15 Best Things to Do in Zakynthos (Greece)

On the Ionian Island of Zakynthos (Zante) there’s a world of difference between the mountainous north and west and the flatter south and east, where most of the beaches are found.

The upper regions have bright white limestone cliffs plummeting to inlets and coves like the marvellous Navagio, which can only be reached by boat.

Much of the southwest, around Laganas Bay, is occupied by the Greek National Marine Park as a nesting area for the loggerhead sea turtle (caretta caretta). This creature lays its eggs on the sandy beaches in the summer, and you’ll be able to go turtle-spotting on glass-bottom boats and observe the hatchlings scrabbling for the water after sunset.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Zakynthos :

1. Navagio (Shipwreck Cove)

Navagio, Zakynthos

In the northeast of Zakynthos is a cove embraced by towering white limestone cliffs.

Beneath them on the white beach are the rusting remains of the MV Panagiotis, a container ship than ran aground in 1980. There are two ways to experience this awe-inspiring natural sight: From above you can drive or catch a tourist bus to Navagio Beach View and queue up for what must be the island’s most emblematic scene, of the shipwreck and the cove’s glowing blue water far below.

By sea you could charter your own boat if you want to be independent, or board a tourist cruise from Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos Port in Volimes or Zakynthos Town on the east coast.

If you don’t mind crowds you can sunbathe on the beach, swim in the ethereal water, marvel at the cliffs and explore the wreck.

2. Kalamaki Beach

Kalamaki Beach

One of a few beaches that we’ll mention in the Greek National Marine Park, Kalamaki is on the eastern pocket of Laganas Bay and could be the best on the island.

The coastline is protected, which keeps tourist development discreet and away from the beach.

There’s nothing more than a single bar renting out parasols and sun loungers.

And as you’re in a national park, the beach is diligently maintained.

The golden sand is spotless, while the beach shelves very gradually to warm, transparent waters.

On the shore you’ll see swimmers hundreds of metres out as the sea is so calm and shallow in this bay.

3. Blue Caves

Blue Caves, Zakynthos

The little harbour at Skinari in the very north of Zakynthos is the point of departure for trips to the Blue Caves, also only accessed by water.

Within minutes you’ll be floating through a magnificent set of limestone sea caves and natural arches.

There’s nothing accidental about the name of these formations as the water has what can only be described as a shade of milky blue, caused by the interplay of the sun and the white limestone.

You’ll be allowed to jump in for a swim and don’t be alarmed to see your skin turn a ghostly hue under the surface.

4. Porto Limnionas Beach

Porto Limnionas Beach

A newly laid road from the village of Agios Leon weaves down to this fjord on the west coast, bounded on its east side by high white cliffs hollowed with caves.

Resting above the fjord on the western slope is a taverna with tables and sun loungers on terraces where you gaze into the pristine blue water.

Further down are rocks and concrete platforms where people lay their towels, and you’ll find it hard to resist bathing in the shimmering, crystalline water and stepping onto the tiny beach at the northern end.

5. Marathonisi

Marathonisi Island

This islet in Laganas Bay in the south of Zakythos is often called Turtle Island, as it’s a hatching ground for the loggerhead sea turtle.

For that reason Marathonisi is uninhabited and visitors have to clear the sandy beach to the north before sunset in summer to allow the turtles to come ashore to lay their eggs.

At the southern harbours of Limni Keriou and Laganas you can embark on turtle-spotting cruises to the island, normally on a glass-bottom boat.

The clarity of the water means you’ll have a good chance of seeing one or two.

You’ll be given up to an hour on the island to sunbathe, swim and have a picnic at this unspoiled setting.

6. Agios Dionisios Church

Agios Dionisios Church

The relics of St Dionysios, the island’s patron saint are kept at this church right on the harbour in Zakynthos Town where they have been since 1717. His reliquary is carried around the town on his saint’s day, on August 24th, and the sarcophagus is opened daily just before noon for worshippers.

The original church was razed by an earthquake in 1893, this reconstructed building dates to 1948 and was one of the few left standing after the earthquake in 1953. In the classic neo-Byzantine style the barrel vault and walls of this St Dyonisios are decorated with frescoes, like the Panagia of the Madonna and infant Jesus in the apse.

The church museum has four works by the eminent 18th-century painter Nikolaos Koutouzis.

7. Keri Caves

Keri Caves, Zakynthos

At the villages on the south coast like Limni Keriou, Agios Sostis and Laganas you can book a boat tour along the indented coastline in the far south of the island.

The white cliffs soar to 300 metres and at their base are small sea caves and natural arches.

At one the boat will lower a ladder for you to swim in the sea, which has a radiance caused by the purity of the water and the sun hitting the white rocks.

You can swim into the caves to look around, and might be amazed to learn that the sea is at least 20 metres deep at the base of the cliffs.

The Keri Caves are often included as a stop on turtle-spotting excursions to Marathonisi.

8. Banana Beach

Banana Beach, Zakynthos

The longest beach on Zakynthos is also one of the most alluring, for its soft golden sand and shallow transparent sea.

Banana Beach is in the Greek National Marine Park in the southeast of the island, but that doesn’t mean that there’s an absence of facilities.

For almost the whole length you can hire sun loungers, or your own beach pergola if you’re feeling decadent.

These are all rented out by the Banana Casa Playa bar and restaurant, which lays on full service.

On the eastern end there’s a watersports centre for activities like parasailing, jetskiing and waterskiing.

9. Anafonitria Monastery

Anafonitria Monastery

A stone’s throw from Navagio is a monastery from the island’s Byzantine period, consecrated in the middle of the 15th century and unharmed by the earthquake of 1953. Saint Dionysios, the patron saint of Zakynthos resided here at the end of his life in the 1500s.

The monastery has a quaint stone tower, originally built to defend the complex but later turned into a campanile.

The church is embellished with stunning if slightly time-worn hagiography.

Maybe the most photogenic spot is the courtyard, with free-standing columns, fruit trees, palms and flowers, growing in pots and vines creeping up the rustic stone walls.

10. Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery

Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery

Resting atop Mount Skopos in the southeast of Zakynthos, the Panagia Skopiotissa Monastery is a gruelling climb worthwhile for its 15th-century church and the exhilarating scenery.

The church walls are coated with frescoes and there’s an icon of the Virgin Mary produced in Constantinople and brought to Zakynthos after it was taken by the Ottoman Empire.

On the floor of the church you won’t help but notice the double-headed eagle, an emblem for the Byzantine Empire.

A lot of the joy of the monastery is the journey there, as you can hike up a winding path from the coastal resort of Kalamaki.

When the sun is glaring in mid-summer, you can always drive up the snaking mountain road from Argassi to the north.

11. Gerakas Beach

Gerakas Beach, Zakynthos

The southernmost beach on Zakynthos is also one of the loveliest, and has a western-facing curve of golden sand lapped by pure turquoise waters.

Behind the beach are precipitous sandy hills that get rockier at each end.

Looking towards the south, there’s a majestic promontory with bare rock layered red and white.

This more secluded end is also favoured by naturists.

One section of the Gerakas Beach is cordoned off, as loggerhead seat turtles use the beach as a nesting site.

These creatures mate during early summer and their eggs tend to hatch throughout the high season.

If you get up before dawn you’ll be able to watch hundreds of baby turtles shuffling to the water from the beach.

12. Byzantine Museum

Byzantine Museum, Zakynthos

In an arcaded mansion pointing out to sea on Solomos Square, the Byzantine Museum is a repository of Byzantine and post-Byzantine religious art from around the island.

From the Byzantine period there are frescoes, icons and wood carvings.

But the museum also has paintings, vestments, crucifixes and many more liturgical artefacts from the 15th to the 17th centuries.

Some of these were produced outside of Zakynthos and brought to the island when it was under Ottoman rule.

Elsewhere a scale model of the city and black and white photographs give you glimpses of how Zakynthos looked before the catastrophic earthquake of 1953.

13. Keri Lighthouse

Keri Lighthouse, Zakynthos

Near the far south of Zakynthos, this lighthouse atop a 300-metre cliffs is only part of the attraction.

A restaurant sits on the cliff-top and from its terrace you’ll be treated to a very romantic perspective of the deep blue Ionian Sea, the cliffs and the outcrops at their base.

And as the terrace points west the sunsets are magical here.

The restaurant also has a small overhanging skywalk if you have a stomach for heights.

Naturally all this comes with the cost of a meal or drinks.

But if you’d prefer to take in the view without paying you can carry on down the road for another vantage point to write home about.

14. Askos Stone Park

Askos Stone Park

In the very north of Zakynthos is an attraction that rolls a wildlife sanctuary, zoo, farm, forest reserve and archaeological site into one.

The park is named for the profusion of stone structures around, from the paving stones, to the drystone walls, stone-built stables and the remarkable cisterns cut from the cliffs and dating back six centuries.

For kids the best bit will be meeting and feeding animals like ponies, deer, peacocks, raccoons, chinchillas, turtles, goats, rabbits and pigs.

The farm is also planted with orchards for peaches and apples, grown without pesticides.

Depending on the season you may be able to get down to some rural activities like harvesting olives or milking a cow.

15. Aristeon Olive Press & Museum

Aristeon Olive Press & Museum

Zakynthos is prized for its olive oil and this free museum a few kilometres from the airport will tell you everything you need to know.

The tour begins in the 1700s, with a collection of antique implements like a wooden press and grindstones that were once powered by animals.

You can contrast these with the state-of the-art factory and its stainless steel vats and centrifuge.

On the way your guide will fill you in on some olive oil facts and point out the difference between virgin and extra virgin olive oil.

At the tasting session there’s homemade bread to dip in Aristeon’s oil, and a factory shop selling olive oil soap and garlic and lemon infused oils.

Here are some of the main reasons why people choose to spend their golden years here:

  • Beautiful scenery: Greece offers stunning beaches, islands and ancient architecture. It’s the ideal retirement setting.
  • Warm climate: Enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters – perfect for year-round outdoor activities.
  • Affordable cost of living: Compared to many Western countries, living expenses in Greece are significantly lower, so your retirement savings can go further.
  • High-quality free healthcare: Greece has an excellent free healthcare system that all residents can access.
  • Expat-friendly communities: Greek people are known for their hospitality, making it easy to feel at home. There are also large communities of other retired expats in Greece.
  • Easy visa options: Greece offers straightforward residency options that make it one of the easier places to retire in Europe if you have a stable passive income.

Tax Benefits for Retirees in Greece

Tax Benefits for Retirees in Greece

Greece has actively decided to incentivise seniors to live there with a 7% flat pension tax for foreign retirees.

While many countries around the world are pushing to attract entrepreneurs and large-scale investors, Greece has realised that wealthy pensioners add to the economy, too.

This tax regime encourages pensioners to not only live in Greece but also spend and invest their earnings in the country.

This is a departure for Greece, which doesn’t exactly boast a rich history of being very competitive from a tax perspective.

However, it’s now possible to pay single-digit taxes on your pension if you meet certain conditions.

To qualify, you need to earn foreign-sourced pension income and transfer your tax residence to Greece. Gaining tax residence in Greece is fairly simple and entails spending at least 183 days in the country every year.

If you’re a citizen of the US, however, the process is more complicated. As a US citizen, you’re always a tax resident of the United States unless you renounce your citizenship.

There’s good news in that the US has a treaty with Greece that prevents most forms of double taxation, meaning you may qualify for certain tax breaks and credits. However, it won’t save you from the need to file and pay what you owe to the IRS every single year.

If you’re from the EU, the UK or pretty much any other country and are in the process of retiring, then Greece is pretty straightforward.

Next, you cannot have been a Greek taxpayer for five of the last six years. So, if you’ve been living in Greece before you decide to avail of the flat tax regime, that’s going to be a problem.

Most people will be relocating from a country that has a tax-cooperation agreement with Greece which has around 57 tax treaties with countries like the UK, US, Ireland, Canada and Germany. These tax treaties offset taxes paid in one against those taxes payable in another, preventing double taxation.

You’ll need to provide documentary evidence and bank statements for your foreign source pension before you apply for this 15-year tax break.

So, while Greece is a certainly desirable location for retirement, qualifying for these special tax regimes requires planning and thought. Contact Nomad Capitalist’s global team today if you’re looking for a team of experts to help you make the best move overseas.

Residence Options in Greece

Residence Options in Greece

As long as your stay does not exceed 90 days, passport holders from the following countries do not need a visa:

  • New Zealand
  • Most European countries.

If you plan to stay in Greece for more than 90 days, you’ll need to apply for a long–stay visa or, depending on your current passport, apply for a registration certificate.

For a long-stay visa, citizens of countries that require a Schengen visa to enter Greece must apply for this in their home country at the local Greek embassy or consulate.

Once you’ve decided to stay in Greece for retirement, you must apply for residence.

There are two main options:

  • The Financially Independent Persons Visa (FIP)
  • Greece’s Golden Visa.

Financially Independent Persons Visa (FIP)

For the FIP Visa, the application must be completed after you arrive in Greece, and it can take up to three months to process.

Once you’ve applied, you may stay legally in the country until the decision is made, even if your 90-day tourist visa expires.

The Financially Independent Persons Visa is valid for two years and, to qualify, you must prove a regular income of at least €2,000 per month and meet other requirements, such as basic medical insurance.

You must demonstrate an additional €400 for a spouse and €300 for each child under 18 years old.

If approved, this is a relatively quick and easy visa to get as it can be granted within ten days.

Greek Golden Visa

Greek Golden Visa

The Greek Golden Visa program is a pathway for non-EU nationals to gain permanent residency through investment.

Investing at least €400,000 in Greek real estate allows you to gain permanent residence in less than two months.

The real estate threshold amount depends on which part of the country you plan to invest in.

The €400,000 threshold only applies to less-popular islands with a population of less than 3,000 inhabitants.

If you want to purchase real estate in the larger, more popular areas of Greece, then the threshold rises to €800,000.

There is an option to invest in the lowest property threshold of €250,000, but this comes with the catch that you will need to renovate listed buildings and convert commercial properties to residential use.

The Golden Visa is granted for five years and is renewable as long as you still own the real estate you invested in.

This program not only grants you permanent residence but makes you eligible for Greek citizenship after seven years.

To gain citizenship, you’ll still have to meet the citizenship requirements and pass the exam, which includes both history and language portions.

Additionally, the Golden Visa allows holders to enjoy visa-free travel within the Schengen Zone and allows them to bring their children as long as they are 21 years of age or younger.

Other Golden Visa investment options include:

  • Capital contribution of €500,000 to a Greek-registered company for shares
  • Capital contribution of €500,000 to a Real Estate Investment Company (REIC) intended to invest only in Greece
  • Capital contribution of €500,000 to a closed-end investment company or mutual fund
  • Purchase of Greek government bonds worth €500,000, held for at least three years
  • Minimum investment of €500,000 in Greek bank term deposit
  • €800,000 in treasury bonds, corporate bonds or shares of a trading facility based in Greece
  • Purchase of shares worth €350,000 in an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) set up in the EU, which invests solely in Greece
  • €800,000 in treasury bonds, corporate bonds or shares of a trading facility based in Greece.

There’s no minimum time you need to spend in Greece to maintain your residency status. You only need to be present in Greece once every five years for visa renewal.

The Cost of Real Estate in Greece

The Cost of Real Estate in Greece

If the Mediterranean weather, amazing food, hospitable people and opportunity to island hop aren’t enough, the low cost of living is another major reason to retire in Greece.

Real estate prices have risen slightly in recent times, with sample costs in three popular retirement destinations in Greece varying significantly:

  • A furnished two-bedroom apartment in a good area in Athens costs approximately €750 a month to rent, while buying it will cost approximately €275,000.
  • In Chania, on the island of Crete, a property of similar size and specification will cost around €600 a month to rent and €230,000 to buy.
  • In Nafplio, a coastal city located in the Peloponnese, the same type of apartment costs about €560 a month to rent and around €150,000 to purchase.

Basically, whether you rent a property with the Financially Independent Persons Visa or purchase real estate through the Golden Visa, there are many affordable, high-quality properties to choose from.

Other Costs of Living in Greece

Other Costs of Living in Greece

It’s not just the housing that’s (relatively) cheap. From dining out and healthcare, the average cost of living in Greece is significantly lower than in major Western economies like the UK and US.

It’s estimated that it’s 53% less expensive to live in Greece than in the US and 47% less expensive than in the UK.

Depending on where you choose to settle, the average cost will vary.

For example, a small village on the mainland will be more affordable than major cities like Athens or Thessaloniki.

Islands can be more expensive than the mainland, but again, it all depends on which island you choose. An island popular with tourists will be more costly than a small, quieter one.

A more popular island may also have fewer rental options, with the boom in holiday lets causing many landlords to hold their rentals as ‘Airbnbs’ from June to September.

Even though housing is becoming slightly more expensive, buying groceries and eating out is very reasonable. Local markets run by farmers selling fresh seasonal produce are very price competitive. Supermarkets and small markets stock both locally grown and imported food products.

If you enjoy eating out, a meal for two in a mid-standard restaurant, including wine, will cost approximately €50. Meanwhile, you can expect an average grocery budget for two to weigh in at approximately €300 per month.

With rising inflation in Greece, the price of utilities has gone up but, overall, the cost is still lower than in many other EU countries.

Local property taxes for rubbish removal and municipal services are based on the size of your property. For an average-sized home, you can expect to pay around €40 per month for combined electricity and municipal services. Water will cost an average of €30 per month, depending on usage.

Mobile telephone services are very reasonable, with talk, text and data plans of around €20 per month. Expect to pay around €30 a month for 60-megabit internet and unlimited data.

Retirees enjoy access to a highly developed public healthcare system that is free or low-cost based on your status in Greece – citizen, resident, EU citizen.

You don’t need a referral to make an appointment with a specialist, and many healthcare facilities in major cities have English-speaking staff. However, they may be harder to find elsewhere.

There are also excellent private facilities, with many residents choosing to take out private health insurance to supplement the public system.

Pros and Cons of Retiring in Greece

Pros and Cons of Retiring in Greece

Some of the most obvious advantages of living in Greece are its fantastic Mediterranean weather, beautiful beaches, spectacular islands, low cost of living and low crime rate.

There’s also an abundance of history and archaeology on offer. The pace of life there is relaxed, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to spend time with welcoming, friendly locals.

On the other hand, some disadvantages of retiring in Greece include potential overcrowding by tourists during the peak season, especially on popular islands.

There’s also the challenge of learning the Greek language, especially if you live remotely in the countryside.

Some of the country’s infrastructure could best be described as outdated but, again, it depends on where you choose to settle.

If you’re considering Greece, you probably aren’t looking for state-of-the-art facilities, even though cities like Athens manage to combine the ancient and the modern.

Successfully retiring in Greece requires research to choose a location that suits your needs. Before buying a property, it’s advisable to rent a place in your desired area to gain a better understanding of it and identify any potential issues.

Best Places to Retire in Greece

Greece offers a wide range of excellent places to retire, including cities, towns, villages and islands, each with their own unique character and attributes.

Crete, The best place to Retire in Greece

Crete is the largest and most populated of the Greek islands. Just under 700,000 people call it home and many more visit during the holiday season.

If you want to be near the ocean and the mountains, you’ll find a wide variety of housing options on the island.

Overall, it’s a wonderful destination with hundreds of historical monuments, stunning scenery, hiking pathways and clean beaches.

Known for its outdoor activities, Crete is the ideal place for those who want a healthy lifestyle. And, if you like a bit of excitement, the nightlife in Crete is lively.

For retirees who want hot, dry summers and mild winters, affordable luxury and fun, Crete has it all.

Athens, The best place to Retire in Greece

The capital, Athens, is a great place for retirees who want a low cost of living in a large modern metropolis that doesn’t sacrifice its culture or character.

The city has a lot of charm with fascinating landmarks like the Parthenon, well-preserved ancient architecture, fashionable neighbourhoods, large public spaces and amazing restaurants.

In Athens, Greece’s past, present and future collides with a blend of ancient and contemporary attractions. In addition to being Europe’s oldest capital, Athens also has the highest average temperatures of any major city on the continent.

Rhodes, The best place to Retire in Greece

Another of Greece’s famous islands, Rhodes, is serviced by dependable public transportation and frequent ferries to the mainland.

The island’s tight-knit and supportive expat community enjoy picture-perfect beaches, a slower pace of life and a genuine taste of life in ancient Greece.

Lesbos , The best place to Retire in Greece

Lesbos, the third biggest island in Greece, is situated about six miles west of Turkey in the northeastern Aegean Sea.

The island has all the amenities you need, including an international airport and frequent ferry connections. Located near the strait that separates Europe and Asia, this is a beautiful island with olive orchards, monasteries, a Roman aqueduct and temples.

Unlike other Greek islands, it doesn’t cater to hordes of tourists, so you can still experience the traditional Greek way of life here with some Turkish touches.

The island’s cost of living is low, with minimal import charges for food and essentials and many affordable real estate options.

Zakynthos , The best place to Retire in Greece

The unspoiled natural environment of Zakynthos is absolutely beautiful.

It’s easy to see why people would want to retire to an island with pristine beaches and towering cliffs that plunge straight into the ocean.

The island is more affordable for long-term residents than its expensive neighbours, Corfu and Kefalonia or Santorini in the far south.

Popular beaches like Alykanas and Tsilivi offer swimming and water sports, while the famed nightlife of Laganas could see you partying long into the night.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki , The best place to Retire in Greece

The northeastern port city of Thessaloniki stands apart from the rest of Greece for its link with people from the Balkan Peninsula, Turkey, the Mediterranean and neighbouring North Macedonia.

It’s not only a cultural and historical hotspot but also a significant transportation hub for Southeast Europe and home to important economic, commercial and governmental institutions.

Thessaloniki is worth considering if the idea of living in an inexpensive city with easy access to many weekend holiday destinations appeals to you.

The Best Places to Retire in Greece: FAQs

The Best Places to Retire in Greece FAQs

Greece doesn’t offer a specific retirement visa. However, if you’re financially independent, you can get a residency permit relatively easily.

That depends on your lifestyle and preferences. Popular islands like Crete, Rhodes and Santorini offer fantastic retirement options. On the other hand, Athens is a vibrant city if you prefer an urban lifestyle, while the many smaller islands are ideal for a quieter retirement.

Smaller islands like Astypalaia, Gavdos and Skyros are some of the most affordable. If you’re after an affordable destination that’s still popular with expats and other retirees, then Corfu is a great option.

Greece is a great place to retire, with a warm Mediterranean climate, beautiful island surroundings, a low cost of living, and visa options that make it easy to retire there.

Of course, this varies depending on your lifestyle and where in Greece you want to retire. However, you can comfortably retire in Greece at around €2,500 – €3,000 per month.

Citizens and residents receive universal health care from the National Health Service (EOPYY) but you need to be registered, have a national insurance number (AMKA) and pay social insurance contributions. Most expats, and some locals, also take out private health insurance to ensure fast access to quality healthcare.
